Finding your voice

I just watched a great Swedish movie "As it is in Heaven"
it was about ordinary people finding their voice.

The climax of the movie was great- I won't tell you in case you decide to see it
but it made me think about what I have been trying to achieve in our Thursday Evening Painting Workshops.

Ordinary people trying to find their voice, their niche. Last night Gay Summer Rick
announced her solo exhibition and I was humbled by her acknowledgment of my influence
of the night I handed her a palette knife and took away her brush.

Gay Summer Rick's opening reception for " Series in Fog and Sun", an exhibition of paintings is tomorrow, Saturday, August 6th, 6:00pm - 10:00pm at Bleicher/Golightly Gallery, 1431 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California. The exhibition runs August 4th through August 16th, 2011.

More on The Opaque Palette

The opaque palette was introduced to us last month by Jan Saether during a portrait workshop at Kline academy. Personally I am pretty set on my combo- Florentine/"California Caravaggio" palette which I have developed over the years but I am always up to a challenge to try new techniques and then try to make them my own by figuring out what works for me and what does not.

Last week I started this portrait of Steve using the opaque palette ideas.

Step one:

was to cover the canvas with mars brown and then draw the head in using mars brown (I added touch of black in order to see the drawing). Once I was happy with the drawing, I began working in the lights with Naples Yellow- Italian by Williamsburg.

Step two:

After 3 days of drying, yes, these opaque colors take much longer to dry which is a bit of a pain, I moved on to a limited palette. In Jan's workshop, he had us only using mars red light the second time but I really felt it was too redundant to work a second day with only Mars Brown, Naples and a bit of red, and especially - the palette is way too warm and I want to differentiate temperature early on. So, I added to that palette on the second day Nickel Yellow, Mars Violet and Black. That way I could easily get some warm and cool tones and get closer to a natural skin tone.

Step three:

You won't see a huge difference yet ---

but on step three I re-in-forced what I was doing in step 2 and tried to build up the lights and get a little more detail. I am still not sold on the very first part where we cover the entire canvas in mars brown and paint into it wet. I feel like I am struggling to get my lights lighter because of this under painting. On step four I will add the rest of the palette -- Chrome Green, Vermillion, Yellow Ochre and White. But I have to admit that I am amazed at what I could get by using a limited palette of:

Nickel Yellow, Naples Yellow Italian, Mars Red Light, Mars Violet, Mars Black. Thats it.

Step Four --The final Image:

Okay so the last day on the opaque palette painting I added my choice colors to do the finishing touches:
Glazing with Ultramarine, Alizarine crimson, Transparent Red Oxide. Then to my palette I added
Yellow ochre, Vermillion, Chrome Green and Titanium white. This allowed me a full range of colors and ones that I am more used to painting with ..along with the all the mars colors.

I found that the final image takes less time to finish because the form is so well worked up with all the base tones. Most of the colors on my typical palette are either semi opaque or transparent which is why the struggle in the beginning to bring up the values. With the opaque palette in the beginning stages you build the foundation (but have to wait longer between layers to dry because mars colors are more oily). In my painting - I chose not to use Jan's medium with the wax and stand oil or stick to the tedious layering of mars brown and naples yellow for 2 days and then only adding red on the second day. Instead. I cut to the chase and added a fuller palette to achieve warms and cools in the beginning. There are some other minor modifications I will make to this approach. On the next portrait I will let you know, but overall I must say that I am pleased with my painting of Steve.

Today was a wonderful day. Barbara Hershey (yes, the awesome, beautiful actress) brought her friend David Leffel to my studio today to discuss the possibility of doing a portrait workshop and live demo. Hopefully I will have some good news for everyone soon with a workshop announcement dates, etc with this masterful artist, David Leffel. (Isn't he dashing?) I could have talked to them for hours. I will keep you posted.

Monday Figure Painting Class with Hal Yaskulka

Fellow Artists,

In this article we discuss Hal Yaskulka's impressive consultation of painting the human figure at Kline academy, And how a student should approach to painting the figure on the first day of this workshop. One of our veteran students Tamara Smith entered the Monday morning figure painting class to further enhance her skills. For her painting, Hal encourages Tamara to patiently draw in figure before painting. This will allow the artist build a solid foundation catering to form and gesture.

Step one:

Hal Instructs Tamara to lightly tint the canvas with acrylic raw umber, This will disband the frightful intimidation of white blank canvas. Which can become a downfall for most artists. Tamara then draws in the figure with a long willow charcoal stick. this type of material allows the the individual to easily erase any drawing mistakes they happen to make on the canvas.

When drawing in the figure Tamara makes sure that the figure is drawn with lines that connects to one another. That way the figure would look monumental and not disconnected. We also take into consideration the figure is drawn with simple shapes, not complex

Step two:

Lightly brushing the willow charcoal drawing with a chamois and sealing it with hair spray. Tamara sets up her palette consisting of Titanium white, Yellow ocher, Vermilion, Quacinidrone red , Red oxide, Alizarin crimson and Ultramarine blue. Tamara goes in to painting in the figure by placing in the darkest dark.
Notified by her hat and dress. Color combination of red oxide and ultramarine.

Step four:

Hal then helps Tamara to find the the background color by adding a violet combination of Alizarin, Ultramarine, White and Red oxide. Hal then paints in the local skin color mixed with ocher, white, vermilion and Alizarin. As you can see these colors of are closely related to each other and with an overall violet atmosphere that is what we want for the this painting.

Kline Academy hosts Portrait Workshop with Jan Saether

Dear Artists,

I am excited about the special Portrait Painting workshop this month. Another sold out workshop and a great buzz in the studio. It is especially special for me because this

month our guest artist is Jan Saether who was my teacher 20 years ago! Even more ironic is that Jan's old

school/studio is the very same location as Kline Academy! Full circles don't often happen but when they do it is magical. We will try to give you a weekly update of what we are learning and experiencing during this 5 session event.

First I want to tell you about the paints Jan asked us to add to our existing palettes:

Unbleached Titanium, Naples Yellow (but made with Chrome - Titanate), Nickel Titanium

Yellow, Mars Brown, Mars Violet, Chrome oxide Green and an earth red or English red.

Thickened lindseed oil or stand oil.

Day one: We were to arrive with a dry, toned canvas of brown ochre or any deep earth red and

not too light.

Step One: Jan next asked us to cover the entire canvas with mars brown, a thin layer but substantial coverage.

Step Two: We began drawing the model with pure mars brown -just an outline of the basics-no

detail.

Step Three: Jan demonstrated how to add light and begin to achieve a ciaro scuro effect. Bouncing around the image to add light and contrast using only naples yellow.

Step Four: We continued to work in the mid-tones and other values using only mars brown and naples yellow.

Next week we get to add a red to the palette.

Jan will be lecturing on "A Master's Notes... on Paint" regarding opaque and transparent qualities and how to mix skin tones. A 3 hour presentation with a live model. $50 per person and we still have some spaces available. February 20, Sunday 2pm to 5pm -call me with credit card to reserve your space.

Okay I am late in the update--but I have been working 7 days a week teaching, painting and I am exhausted!

Workshop Day Two:

We added Mars Red Light to our existing palette and working again with just Naples Yellow (Italian) by Williamsburg, we worked in the red tones but only around her cheek, lips and nose. Using the same mixture of Mars Brown and Naples for the midtones and pure naples for the highlights. The painting took on a mysterious golden glow.

The idea is to work the entire painting - building the form only with pure opaque pigments and absolutely staying away from white.

It is like a big mystery--Jan won't tell us what is next ... we just have to wait until next week.

Day 3:

Now the palette is taking shape. The colors are: Nickel Yellow, Naples Yellow, Yellow Ochre, French Vermillion or Cad red light, Mars Red Light, or English Red, Mars Brown, Mars Violet (aka Caput Mortum) Mars Black, Chrome Green, Permanent Green Light, and Lead White-(but try not to use it).

We continued to overpaint what we had done and strengthen our values, modify our subtle transitions and attend to our edges. Jan demoed on my painting and lost the likeness (he said he was more concerned with the process) but it bugged me so -I couldn't sleep and came in in the morning and fixed it. I need to see the person I am painting and for me the means does not justify the end.

It is an interesting approach and I will surely try it on another painting.

Day 4:

More color and continue to work on the model. This was our long day. A full 4 hours with the model. Jan discussed the palette more in depth and I will post his notes later. But as you can see, the more we work up the painting in opaque paint, the luminous it becomes.

Monday, Feb 21 is our last day and I will try to make head way on this painting and make it more human

Last Night: Finally, the dessert! So now we glaze. I love glazing. And on top of the opaque layers made a beautiful combination. At this point Jan recommended we use what ever colors we were familiar with for our glazing. This is my specialty and I love transparent colors. So, Red Oxide and Ultramarine blue was a perfect brown glaze for the hair. Later I added some alizarine crimson to this mixture and overlapped onto the neck and shadow areas. You have to plan on pretty much painting the entire canvas. After the glazing it is a repeat of the same opaque colors but staying only in the light areas, carefully painting into the glaze. I liked what I accomplished and I can see how I would adapt this palette to my own style and my own teaching. I am not a

big fan of green, I guess I am more of a blue kinda gal so I would probably tint the chrome green to be a bit bluer and try that.

Also, I tend to prefer transparent shadows. I love the Florentine method of saving the transparent nature of the shadow areas. That being said, I will give this method more practice before I make my final decision on whether I will change my palette.

I would say it was a very successful event. My students, who had only heard of Jan through me were in full attendance at the lecture we hosted for him on the first in a series of lectures entitled "A Master's Notes" -- this one was on paint and the nature of paint and the importance of setting up the beginning palette with the most opaque colors available. Also in an order much like a tic-tac-toe. Personally my brain could not get behind this positioning of colors and I used a more traditional setup of light to dark around the perimeter of the palette.

Walt Morton sent me his notes from the lecture on the palette setup that you might find

interesting which I will post again after Jan has made some changes. Give it a try and let us know how you liked it and what you discovered using this palette. It will be nice to hear from everyone.

Greetings!

We wanted to let you know that we are canceling all future Tuesday night un-instructed costume workshops.
The attendance has been very low probably because there are so many other un-instructed workshops all over town, every night of the week.

THE GOOD NEWS IS...
Instead-- we will be offering a series of on-going, 5 week courses. The first is a live figure drawing/ painting workshop---long pose with instructor Grigor Chilingarian who also studied at The Florence Academy of Art. The weekly workshop will begin in January and we are starting the sign-up sheet now. Grigor will begin by demonstrating an academic approach to figure drawing which you will have 2 weeks to finish. The following 3 weeks will be on transferring the drawing to canvas and painting in a Florentine method developing and modeling the form, skin tones, learning about keying the light, etc. For those who are are interested in drawing only, you have the option of spending the entire 5 weeks on drawing the pose.

Kline Academy Student, Xavier Gonzalez wins Artistic Achievement Award at Culver City Art Show

Every year the Culver City Art group holds their annual art exhibit
featuring over 24 artists. This year we are proud that one
of our K.A Artists, Xavier Gonzalez won the Rice -Foster-Hesnly
Artistic Achievement Award for his entry, Meditation; a master copy
based on Domenico Fetti. It is a beautifully painted canvas in cool blue tones
with masterful blends and edges. Xavier is a young artist who is working
on perfecting his technique in classical painting. I am sure this is the first of
many of awards to come for this promising artist.

All Paints are NOT Created Equal

I had the pleasure of meeting the handsome creator of Michael Harding Paints from London yesterday.

I learned of his incredible quality oil paints when I was studying in Florence and many of the instructors

were hooked on his paints. I immediately rushed to the Florentine art store to buy some. They were wonderful but after I ran out, and came back to the states, I could not find them anywhere.

Consistent quality is a must when you are a professional painter and even a student. I still don't understand why there is a distinction between "Student" and Professional" grade paints and materials.

It is hard enough for students to learn this craft and why make it harder by pushing them towards inferior paints and brushes? Inferior paints can really muck up a painting. The colors will look muddy and will

not have the luster and brightness you want.

Good paint is essential for creating good art. But GREAT paint is pure joy and I have to tell you that Michael Harding's paint is GREAT paint.

I'm sure the reason Mr. Harding created his paint is because he is an artist himself and cares about what comes out of the tube and onto his canvas...you should too. We could have finished each other's sentences as we talked about the importance of certain colors and quality. You will love his Naples Yellow light which is lemony as it should be. Not dark and reddish! His transparent red oxide is a perfect mix of warm brown and rich red tones not a blasting red orange. The rest of the colors are pure and rich and I can't wait to get my hands on my new paint which I am about to order.

Yesterday at Kline academy, a new session began for the figure painting class which will last for 4 weeks. Instructor Hal Yaskulka makes headway for a brand new demo. Showing his simple yet effective step by step process, Yaskulka masterfully shows us how to paint the human body in this first demo.

Hal starts off by tinting the canvas with a thin mixture of acrylic paint, white and raw umber. After letting the paint dry, he then paints a basic out line of the body with raw umber. The idea behind this approach is to describe the form in straight angles. In addition, Hal show’s the direction of body at a certain angle, giving the figure a thrust of direction. Also to be noticed, he distinguishes the outline of the body with geometric shapes such as triangles, rectangles and cylinders.

After identifying the body Hal continues by adding the darks, and at the same time distinguishing the negative and positive spacing on the surrounding figure. Like most of his paintings, Hal adds the darks to the hair first. Rule of thumb, in a figure painting the darkest dark starts with the hair (unless they are blonde). From there, he can start ruling out what will be the color relationship of the background compared to the hair. He then moves on adding darks to the rest of the body by thickening the raw umber and adding a bit of raw sienna. Hal tends to paint the shadows in a abstract manner. The out line of the shadows is formed with straight angles. As for the negative and positive spacing, he places a shadow beneath the arm and makes certain areas darker than others. Thus, giving dimension to the entire form.

After making a noticeable feature of the figure, Hal begins to lay down the color. For this demo, Hal's palette has Titanium White, Naples yellow, Yellow ochre, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Napthol Scarlet (Vermilion) , Rose matter (Alizarin Crimson), Raw Umber, Cerulean Blue Hue and Ultramarine Blue. At this point Hal begins focusing on color relationships between the body and the back ground. Still focusing on the darks, Hal's point of origin is the head. From here, he begins by adding a greenish cool hue to the back ground, then a reddish sienna to the shadow of the head and keeping a similar color to the hair to offset it, carefully he blends both into each other. He then moves on coloring shaded areas of the body, which of course has a similar color relation ship to the back ground and the surrounding area.

The final step for this part of the demo Hal emphasizes the halftones continuously because the halftone is what bridges the gap between the dark and light and by oning in on this method, it helps a painting to gain a sense of realism. Hal begins to thicken the paint. The areas he begins to thicken are the flesh tones, in addition; by thickening the paint he begins to brighten certain parts of the body by adding a contrasting relationship between the cools and warms. Lastly, Hal adds a variety of hard and soft edges. By doing so, the painting begins to have dimension. Soft edges push a section of the painting back and a hard edge brings it forward.

Hal Yaskulka Demo - lesson 1 of 4

The Artists who attended the ongoing figure painting course on Monday at Kline Academy received a demonstration by Instructor Hal Yaskulka.

Hal emphasized techniques that allow an individual to begin painting the human figure confidently and accurately.

Hal begins the step by step process by simply tinting the canvas in raw sienna (acrylic) to eradicate the intimidation of the white canvas. After the acrylic paint has dried, he dabs the hogs hair brush in oil and paints onto canvas.

Hal goes on by creating a silhouette that depicts a rectangular oval representing the form of the body, with that alone he moves on painting the figure in geometrical shapes.

In the second step, Hal increases the depiction of the painting by using cool colors. He lays in his darkest dark beginning with the hair. He moves onto the back ground with a greenish cool hue forming the shadow of the body.
Hal then creates the shadow of the forearm, back, and bottom with a sienna reddish hue.

The third phase connects the warm value tones to the cool tones. Hal deepens the dimension of the painting by blending the mid tone into the cool tone of the body. Note this is where it is most emphasized in order to achieve a third dimension Hal then paints the warm tones onto the canvas, however he carefully makes the colors not too warm, for that is to be left on the final phase of this demonstration

Three more weeks to go and this painting already looks absolutely amazing. Hal Yaskulka has amazed us once again. Stay tuned in the coming weeks and see this painting achieve its masterfulness by the one and only Hal Yaskulka!!!

How to Paint An Eye part 2

Sometimes, the best way to get your point across is to exaggerate. The image to the right was a demo I did on a student's palette to illustrate how varying values can help to describe the form to give it a more 3 dimensional quality. Let me explain:

1. Think of the eye as a ball. In order to round it out, you need to vary the values from medium dark to light.

2. This example is un-blended. Students tend to over blend everything. Force yourself not to blend. I used a bright Isabey brush for this example because I could get a "chiseled" edge. Overlapping each brush stroke just slightly so my edges would help create the illusion of a transition.

3. When you mix your colors, try to see the how the values vary ever so slightly. My palette was simple: Titanium white, Yellow Ochre, French Vermillion and Black.

4. Later, I could go back in and blend the edges where each value meets or-- I could leave it as is for a different style of painting. In fact, sometimes I have my students work the entire painting without blending. One of my favorite teachers once said to me in her beautiful Italian accent..."think of your painting like a mosaic...and you must describe all the facets of color and value that you see...stroke next to stroke." This has helped me in paintings on a daily basis

How to paint an Eye

The biggest mistake my students make in our Portrait Painting class when painting an eye, is that they try to illustrate and dissect all the parts of the iris, pupil, etc instead of painting it as a whole. Let me explain:

1. Paint out the entire eye socket with a dark color (Transparent red oxide and ultramarine blue)--think of a skeleton and the cavity of the eye socket.

2. Paint around the eye leaving the dark color as the line of the lid. A simple stroke of a a mid value will describe the eye lid., and continue underneath the eye and surrounding area.

3. Since the eyeball and eye are already almost black, let that be the dark part of the iris. Simply mix the eye color and place your brush on the inside of the cirlce.

4. The whites of the eye are never white! Use a muddy skin tone with either a hint of black or a hint of blue. Start darker than you think. Light usually hits one side of the eye stronger than the other

It's a 4 hour program -live demo and is packed with painting tips and lessons.
I made it out of frustration-my students were not progressing as I thought they should so I decided to put the instruction on DVD. I made them watch it before class and I was shocked at their instant progress. Hmm. "They'll listen to the TV but not me."

Kline Academy Student, Xavier Gonzalez wins Memorial Award at Culver City Art Show

Every year the Culver City Art group holds their annual art exhibit
featuring over 24 artists. This year we are proud that one
of our K.A Artists, Xavier Gonzalez won the Memorial Award
for his entry, Peasant boy on a stool; a master copy based on Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.
It is a beautifully painted canvas in warm earth tones with masterful blends and edges.
Xavier is a young artist who is working on perfecting his technique
in classical painting. I am sure this is the first of many of awards to
come for this promising artist.
