Johnny has been with Kline Academy for a decade, and we are so proud and excited to celebrate him this weekend! About Johnny:

Johnny Castillo (b. 1995) is a Los Angeles based contemporary painter who investigates his placement in America as a first-generation Guatemalan immigrant. By deconstructing his emotional and psychological experiences, Castillo explores the idea of displacement and inhabiting an in-between world-a place where one never seems to have access to their home country or the American dream.

Castillo was born in Guatemala and was brought to Los Angeles, California at the age of 5. He has experienced the American culture for 22 years now. Unable to visit his home country due to his legal status, Castillo fights to remember what he feels like are now faint memories of a Guatemalan home he once inhabited.

Having obtained an Associate’s Degree in Studio Arts from Santa Monica College, Castillo is currently studying Drawing and Painting at The Long Beach School of Art.

Sharon Weaver is one of the great landscape painters of America. Born with a passion for art, she first attended Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, later transferring to Parsons School. While working for more than a decade in Manhattan, Sharon's career took her all over the world. Visiting Los Angeles, Sharon found the natural beauty and wide open spaces of California a welcome change from the man-made canyons of New York. It didn't take long for her to move here where she has pursued her art of landscape painting.

About Jessica:

Los Angeles-based artist Jessica Taylor Bellamy explores the tension of living at the edge of a precarious paradise. Primarily working with oil painting, Bellamy also incorporates screen printing, video, and sculpture into her practice. Her paintings function as collages that intend to deconstruct idealist narratives by exploring the political, social, and ecological implications of a false promise of paradise and false notions of progress. Through a critical and loving approach, Bellamy examines the phenomenological experience of the California landscape and proposes that we reimagine our relationship to the environment and examine the social structures that strain it. Bellamy creates layered compositions of overlapping and intersecting representations of culture, history, plant species, and sun phases that result in dream-like narratives or windows that give form and visibility to unseen or alternative possibilities. Often she pulls from her own archive of collected data —the LA Times sunrise, sunset, and moon phases; temperature charts; oral histories of her Afro-Cuban immigrant family's experience of environmental change— to create a research practice and visual lexicon that is constantly remediated and layered back into her art.

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheryl Kline, Founder and Owner of Kline Academy of Fine Art, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a skill-based art academy dedicated to teaching historic and contemporary drawing and painting techniques to teens and adults of all skill levels. Classical techniques, French and Italian academy, as well as innovative abstract, non-objective, and Bay Area figurative. Our students are very diverse - teens working on a portfolio for college, adults who want to advance their painting skills, animation and video artists, tattoo artists, retirees, and basically anyone who wants to get better at their art-making.

Tell us about yourself

I was a working artist, and I also had about 10 students. I started Kline Academy of Fine Art in 2007. My partner and I purchased the property on Motor Ave in Los Angeles on an interest-only loan until we could get funding. This was supposed to be a place for my personal studio and a classroom. But in 2008, there was a financial crash, and to survive, I gave up my studio, added a classroom, and created an academy. I hired my artist friends whose work I loved, and a school was born!
I have had to put my own work on hold over the years and try to juggle the demand from the galleries that represent me. It has surely been a juggle, but what motivates me each day is to see all who come to our studio for art classes... it's more than an art school; it's an arts social event.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is surviving since 2008! Anyone who got past 2008 and Covid should receive an award! Not only that, we kept our artists working throughout the pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In the beginning, being able to pay all the bills on time like rent or mortgage, property taxes, upkeep, payroll etc. I used to wait until someone would pay for a month of classes and then race to the DWP to pay the electric bill just before it would be shut off. Once business starts to improve, it's hard sometimes to think about taking risks to continue to build your business like adding more to an advertising budget or hiring a new employee because you never know when the next crisis will hit and you don’t want to be stuck without a cushion or “nest egg.” Also, having to wear all the “hats” to make a business run smoothly and be successful. I still answer the main phone 24/7 so I don’t miss a potential new student. Another difficulty is overworking and not taking “me” time. This is super important for any entrepreneur to be sure to set boundaries and know when your body, mind and spirit needs to be nurtured. Working with many types of personalities, skill sets, backgrounds, cultural differences, age groups will surely give you some sleepless nights. Remember too, that no matter how hard you try to be a considerate employer, someone will always find fault with you and it only takes one disgruntled person to poison your team. I wake up every day and try to do my best to keep the business running and growing so everyone has a job and at the end of the day, that is all you can do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

It's not as easy as you think. What is your overhead vs. what you are offering = price you charge. Find an equation that gives you the true cost of what you are offering. Overhead, advertising, staff hours, social media ads, other advertising, hotel, air, food, transportation, etc., assistance during a workshop, monetary loss due to cancellations, etc.

H A I K U: Poetry and Pastel

Anne Allen, North Carolina

The Artist’s Workshop, a weekly zoom classroom with founder and owner Cheryl Kline, was the driving force for Anne Allen to develop a collection of small works based on the imagery in Japanese woodblock prints. Following a talk on symbolism in art, Cheryl asked why I thought Asian-inspired imagery was appearing in my artworks. “What is your story as an artist? What are you trying to communicate with your art?” Moved by Music, a poetic landscape in pastel, charcoal, and alcohol wash is the first artwork is Anne’s new collection, named H A I K U: Poetry and Pastel.

Japanese woodblock prints and illustrations flourished in seventeenth century Edo as Tokyo was called. Between weekly classes, Anne studied the art and culture of Japan and viewed Van Gogh & Japan, a British film produced by Exhibitions on Screen. “Colorful Japanese prints were often paired with poetry. Each pastel painting in the new collection is paired with a poem.” The pastels are showing at BlackBird Frame & Art, Asheville, NC.

Anne Allen lives in the Appalachian region of Western North Carolina and serves on the board of the Appalachian Pastel Society, NC. She is a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS). Anne participates in Kline Academy’s weekly critique and virtual presentation every Thursday at 11 a.m.

Important Update on Resuming Studio Classes

Over the last few months, we have taken precautionary measures to help prevent the spread of the virus by closing the studio and moved our classes to an online format to support instructors and students.

As the state begun easing restrictions at some level, we are planning on a slow opening of the Academy between June 1st and June 30th, 2020.

By “slow” we mean that not all classes will be on. We will start with one - two classes with the restrictions below:

We will limit the class sizes to 8 people in the front studio and 10 in the back studio

There will be enough distance between easels (6 ft).
We ask everyone to wear a mask or face shield while in the presence of others. (Students bring their own masks.)
We will provide disposable gloves and hand sterilizer.
We will clean the surface before and after the session with alcohol wipes.
We will keep the doors and windows open for airflow.

Students who have class credits will receive emails from us regarding the date classes will resume.

Students who have class credits may resume classes at no cost. (*Make-ups are not class credits.)

If students are not feeling comfortable or well enough to come take the class, they can resume at anytime, when they feel ready.

In the meantime, we will keep our Live Zoom Classes going.

Update about our April Schedule

First of all I want to check in with each of you to see how everyone is holding up. I really hope you are well and safe. Just to remind you, the best way to prevent the spread of the virus or any germs is to follow the "Safer at Home" order in place across the entire state of California.

It's been more than two weeks since we postponed classes and workshops. I was hoping this would be over soon... But it looks like we should take at the very least another month or maybe more to start getting back to life again.

That being said, we will not be meeting until mayor Garcetti eases the restriction. We will send you an update about when to resume your class and workshop as soon as we hear from him, and in the meantime if you have any questions, feel free to email Juri at artist@klineacademy.com or call Cheryl at 310-927-2436.

We can get through this. We artists are survivors and we don’t give up!

Update on our March Schedule: We will not meet until the first week of April

We are as concerned as you are and with Mayor Garcetti’s new announcement for us all to be more proactive in preventing the further spread of this virus in our city.

We have also decided that we also need to play it safe. Teen class will have their last class today and resume first week of April. All other classes will not be meeting until first week of April.

EXCEPTIONS:

Plein Air Landscape Painting Workshop

The outdoor landscape workshop will still meet at Kenneth Hahn State Park on Saturday, March 21st from 9:30am to 1:30pm. Since it is outdoors we feel it is safe and will be a good relief for those who need art to get through this.

The Imaginary Landscape Workshop

The Imaginary Landscape Workshop will still meet on Friday, March 27 and Sunday March 29. There will be a limited number of students (eight) with plenty of space in-between easels.

One-on-Ones and Private Lessons:
Most of our instructors will be available for private in-studio lessons or critiques. Limited to a maximum of 2 people per session at the private class rate. (If you want to help these artists keep afloat and pay their bills, please schedule a session with them.)

An important note on the coronavirus : What we are doing to keep you safe

First of all let me assure you that all of us at Kline Academy are as alert about this situation as you are.

A comforting thing to note is that our class sizes are relatively small — from 6 to 12 people. Much much less than you would encounter at the mall, market, nail salon, barber, or any other public place you may need to visit.

We have implemented the following to help avert possible contact of any viruses flu or other with our students:

We sanitize all surfaces after every class
We provide free of charge, disposable gloves to anyone who wants them
All instructors are required to wear disposable gloves while teaching
Hand sanitizer in the studio for anyone to use at anytime
An extended make-up policy for anyone who feels sick - If you wake up and feel ill, CALL US at 310-927-2436 or 310-837-7194 and STAY HOME. We will work with you to figure out a make-up plan.
Skype or Facetime us if you do get sick. Let’s say you do get a bad flu or God forbid the coronavirus and need to stay home, I will personally skype with you for a private session in lieu of your missed class. That is assuming you are up for an art lesson in your home on your computer. I will work with you for 45 minutes on your own project so will not miss a class and be comfortable in your own home. When you are at the studio, please follow those time-trusted tips for your own health and safety:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your elbow

Art is the one thing that heals and let us forget the day to day struggles of this world. Let's not let "IT" go and keep being artists and working on our craft.

Thomas Garner went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice where he learned to paint and found a strong nexus between craft and concept.

"My painting style started out as photo-realistic, but with time I learned the craft of the masters so that now I am able to create a unified mechanism between technique and content, painting about painting. I strive to learn everything I can to about every aspect of figurative painting that has brought me explore live figure painting, plein air, still life and portraiture."

Here is some insight shared by Thomas Garner:

What is your daily / weekly schedule as a working artist?

"I have my regular day job in fashion graphics and illustration but every evening I am at my easel painting whether I am tired or not as I have been doing for the last 35 years. It is my meditation, or my drug. When I find time I also paint on weekends in a more up time of the day. I reserve that for doing Alla Prima work which requires a more energetic treatment."

How do you prepare your drawing / painting surface?

"I generally prepare my own canvases. When I do my Classical work I use linen which I sometimes prepare with traditional rabbit glue and gesso. Often I will also hand stitch canvases together to achieve a visible seam across the painting. This is one of my own signature artistic, symbolic gestures. For my Urban painting I use denim in place of canvas as it strikes me as being more symbolically appropriate for urban subjects. In both cases I mask off a passpartout border of exposed fabric around the periphery that functions as a frame. Then also in both cases I tone my canvases according to the subject that can be yellow ocher for the classical work and magenta for the urban. In other cases such as portraits or plain air it would be some shade of chromatic grays."

Panel vs cotton canvas? Which do you prefer?

"I generally prefer canvas because it usually has the right amount of tooth or roughness to pick up paint and gives a good brushy, textured effect. Depending how a panel is primed it can be too smooth presenting an obstacle when applying the first layers of paint. That said, there are times when a smooth panel can be very effective for example you are looking for a streaky effect or working on a subject that is highly detailed."

Natural vs synthetic hair? Which do you prefer?

"I think that in recent times synthetic bristles have way out-stripped traditional, natural hogs hair bristle. They perform better in terms of flexibility, they hold a nice razor sharp edge, they clean easier and last longer, and often cost less."

Hog or sable?

"Synthetic sable has not yet surpassed natural sable. Nothing beats the performance of genuine sable if you are inking a drawing giving beautiful, expressive thick and thin linage. Real sable is usually too soft for oil painting except in some of the finest details and where very smooth blending is needed. Oil painting in most cases requires a stiffer brush because the medium is thick and needs to be pushed into the texture of the canvas. I have however found among some synthetic bristles the characteristic of bristle that is stiff in the stem but bends softly towards the tip giving the best of both types."

on her recent "Best in Show" award.

Very honored, Lana Gloschat, award-winning artist, colorist, and instructor, was selected to receive the "Best in Show" award in the 2019 Colored Pencil Magazine's art competition.

Noted by the judges, Lana's highly realistic portrait demonstrates great technical skill. In Judge Paul Hink's words, "the expressions on the faces of the man and the boy are captured perfectly, and the luminous rendering of the skin tones creates a feeling of light and freshness. This depiction of an every day activity is also elevated by the sensitive observation of a moment shared between father and son."

We recently came across an interesting article regarding Artist-run Galleries. Established in unusual locations, garages, apartments, you name it, these Artist-run Galleries are defying the odds as they compete with mega-dealer trends in Los Angeles. A detailed discussion about the vision behind these artist-run galleries is also introduced, detailing the motivation of the Artists and how they managed to maintain a career as an artist while running a gallery.

Kline Academy of Fine Arts recently came across some information we found very interesting and valuable, so we decided to share it with you all.

5 reasons to support the arts

Have a Positive Social Impact:
For thousands of years, song and dance have brought communities together. Today, the arts create a space where all members can come together.

Enhance your Mood:
The arts offer an escape from the troubles of everyday life. When you're writing, singing, painting, or playing an instrument, you're able to temporarily set stress aside to focus on enjoying your craft.

Help The Economy:
The arts make up a major chunk of the economy - 4.2% of the GDP, to be exact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. While that number may seem small, it's higher than the economic shares of the nation's transportation, tourism, and agriculture sectors.

Encourage Healing:
Different types of arts programs are employed in many different healthcare facilities. Patients that engage with these arts programs heal faster, manage their pain better, and spend less time in the hospital.

Generate Creativity:
The arts are a self-perpetuating activity. Creativity is generated from the right side of the brain. The more you engage it, the more creative you become, like flexing a muscle in your brain.

Classical Drawing and Painting Student

Anastasia Shmukler has been studying with Kline Academy of Fine Arts for almost 5 months. Anastasia has taken several different classes, Beginning Drawing Foundations with Bill Neukkomm, Drawing with Color with Lana Gloschat, Introduction to Oil Painting with Juri Umagami, and Classical Painting with Cheryl Kline. Anastasia has shown great potential achieving some remarkable work along the way. She is now experimenting with Oil Painting and is currently working on a Bouguereau master copy.
