Khyber Medical University (KMU) organized a grand function to welcome the participants of Batch II and a certificate distribution ceremony was also organized among the participants of Batch I. Khyber Medical University has successfully conducted the entry test for allied health sciencs and all of their semester exams. Recently, 2nd year MBBS and Dental exam was conducted following strict SOPs, however due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, KMU administration conducted three emergency meetings with the Deans of public and private medical colleges and decided to wait for the NCOC meeting to be held on Monday. The pandemic situation in the education sector and the possibility of early and extended winter break will be discussed in detail in the meeting scheduled on Monday, 16th November, 11:00am at National Command and Operation Center’s (NCOC). If the education institutes were to close then KMU will explore different available options (on-site, online or hybrid) in consultation with the relevant stakeholders and the decision will be taken in the best interest of the students, Insha ALLAH.

KMU holds breast cancer awareness seminar

The growing number of breast cancer patients in society is a major challenge for all of us that can be met through joint efforts, especially through large-scale mass awareness. These views were expressed by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Gandapur, Registrar, Khyber Medical University (KMU), Peshawar, while addressing a seminar on Breast Cancer Awareness organized by Quality Enhancement Cell at KMU Multi Purpose Hall. Prof. Dr. Abid Jamil, Head, Department of Oncology, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Dr. Saima Abid, President, Public Health Association, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Dr. Amjad Ali and Asiya Bukhari, Director, QEC- KMU also addressed on the occasion.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Gandapur termed the holding of the seminar as a need of the hour and said that the rising rate of malignant diseases like cancer is a major challenge for the entire society as well as medical research institutes and medical professionals. He said that early diagnosis of cancer could not only save the lives of cancer patients but also reduce the huge cost involved.He said that this insidious disease can be combated by creating awareness among the people on a large scale.

Earlier, experts elaborated on the statistics, causes, prevention and treatment of breast cancer, saying that 9.8 million women in Pakistan are affected by breast cancer, which leads to high-risk countries. Timely diagnosis of breast cancer can reduce the number of deaths per year by 90%. They said that the rising rate of breast cancer in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa can be estimated from the number i.e 15000 of patients suffering from breast cancer every year. ۔ Experts say that cancer usually affects the breast, bones, lungs, liver and stomach, with the highest rate being noted in the breast. They said that according to modern research and international standards, cancer can be easily diagnosed through CT scan instead of ultrasound and X-ray. They said that timely diagnosis of various stages of cancer could not only make the treatment effective but also prevent the loss of precious human lives.

Experts say that cancer is no longer incurable but due to high cost of treatment, in a poor and backward country like Pakistan, treatment is often beyond the reach of patients. They said that 32% of the 200,000 cases of cancer that occur in Pakistan every year are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the treatment of which costs from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 5 million. They said that one lakh people are dying every year due to this insidious disease which is a major challenge for the survival of humanity. They said that a study conducted on cancer patients at HMC has revealed that the average income of most cancer patients is only Rs.22000/= per month.

They said that with the special interest of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, an eight-year project at a cost of Rs. 8 billion for the treatment of poor and needy cancer patients under a public-private partnership in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies in HMC. So far 6358 patients have been registered out of which 2000 patients have been treated during the year 2019. Experts emphasize that breast cancer can be controlled and cured by creating more awareness about breast cancer.

KMU Entrance Test for Allied Health Sciences Programs re-scheduled to be held on 7th November 2020

As test for erstwhile FATA/Balochistan students is going to be held by HEC on 8th November, 2020 under the project titled as “Provision of Higher Education Opportunities for the students of Balochistan & FATA-Phase-II project for undergraduate Programs”, Entrance Test for KMU Allied Health Sciences Programs has been re-scheduled to be held on 7th November, 2020. Time and other instructions will remain the same. Those candidates who have already printed their roll number slips need not to print it again.

This decision has been made considering requests received from candidates and HEC for changing the date of KMU Entrance Test for Allied Health Sciences Programs. Details about test centers will be shared through KMU Admission Portal (https://kmuadmissions.pk) and ETEA official web site well before 7th November, 2020. KMU becomes the first public sector university in Pakistan to launch PhD in this discipline.

Prof Zia Ul Haq, VC KMU presented about the update of last three months including opening of new campuses in Swat and Kohat this year. Several new programs including BS in Public health, BS Vision Sciences, BS audiology, BS prosthetics & orthotics will be started in the new campuses. Besides this BS Programs in 11 technologies will also be started in paramedical Sciences. He also apprised about the plan of opening the first international campus in Afghanishtan subject to the approval of Hon Governor and Govt of KP. KMU also plans to open campuses in all big cities of KP and Islamabad in the upcoming 6 months.

The proactive role and keen interest of VC KMU for improvement of Medical and Allied Health Sciences Education was appreciated.

KMU launched mental health research project - DiaDeM, worth 3 million GBP

Khyber Medical University (KMU), Peshawar in joint collaboration with the University of York, UK, launched a mental health study project titled “ Developing and Evaluation an adapted Behavioral Activation intervention for people with Depression and Diabetes in South Asia” worth 3 million £ amounting to PKR. 636,461,028.90. this multi-country, multi-center research project is funded by the National Institute for Health Research, UK. Other partner organizations include along University of Southampton UK, University College London UK, Hull York Medical School UK, Institute of Psychiatry Rawalpindi, Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, Hayatabad Medical Complex Hospital Peshawar, Tees, Esk & Wear Valley NHS Trust UK, University of Leeds, UK and Ark Foundation, Bangladesh.

Main theme of the project is “There is no health without mental health”. This collaboration aims to develop and test a culturally appropriate approach to the recognition and treatment of depression in people with diabetes in Bangladesh and Pakistan based on Behavioral Activation. Launching ceremony of the said project was held here at KMU multipurpose hall, Secretary Health KP Mr. Syed Imtiaz Ali Shah was the chief guest whereas founder Vice chancellor of KMU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Daud Khan was guest of honor. Besides others, VC KMU Prof. Dr. Zia ul Haq, Registrar KMU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Gandapur, member Senate KMU Mr. Zia ul Haq Sarhadi, President Psychiatrics Association Prof. Dr. Mukhtar ul Haq and renowned Diabatologist Prof. Dr. A. H. Amir were also present at the occasion.

While talking to the ceremony, health experts told that health care systems in low and middle-income countries face the growth of mental and physical multi morbidity. Type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing, particularly in South Asia where depression in type 2 diabetes represents the largest combined mental and non-communicable disease burden. People with long-term physical health conditions, such as diabetes, have a 2-3 fold increased risk of depression. Outcomes for depression and diabetes are significantly worse for both conditions when they occur together.

They emphasized a joint approach to care is needed using a scalable intervention to recognize and treat depression, integrated with diabetes care. Behavioral Activation is a relatively simple, effective and culturally portable psychological therapy for depression, which can be delivered by non-specialists. DiaDeM has potential to improve mental and physical health, reduce inequalities and stigma for vulnerable groups and provide economic benefit. This program will enhance capacity in applied mental-physical multi-morbidity research and policymaking, they added.

After detailed discussion & input from all the participants below decisions were made;

(1) To conduct monthly online meeting between worthy VC, KMU and Honorable Deans/Principals to discuss ongoing issues of medical education and further improve the current teaching and assessment with mutual collaboration.

(2) Considering the current COVID scenario, it was unanimously decided to delay all MBBS/BDS professional exams by 4 weeks from their announced dates. KMU to issue revise schedule at earliest.

(3) Medical and Dental Colleges will open by 15th September as per Govt. decision. KMU will share SOPs based on HEC & NCOC guidelines for Medical, Dental and Allied Health Sciences colleges/institutes & their hostels across the province. The institutions can adapt these SOPs as per their own requirements/ground situation.

(4) Although the damage due to COVID-19 is unprecedented and irreversible but Colleges and KMU will try their level best to cover the gap. KMU will make sure to issue result in days rather than weeks.

(5) Continuous efforts have been made by KMU and colleges over the years to reduce the duration of MBBS studies from 7 years to 5 years. KMU will try its maximum to cope with timelines for timely completion of MBBS, BDS and allied health studies for the students enrolled with KMU despite the fact that Corona virus has clamped its tentacles around the globe.

PCR Kits for Corona Tests are handed over to KMU PHRL

Islamic Relief Pakistan, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has donated various PCR kits for corona tests worth Rs.04 million to Khyber Medical University Public Health Reference Laboratory (KMU-PHRL) and Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital (STH), Swat.

The handing over ceremony was held at KMU Senate Hall in which KMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zia ul Haq, Registrar Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Gandapur, Director PHLR Dr. Yasir Yousafzai, Additional Director Dr. Asif Ali, WHO Representative Dr. Syed Akbar, Islamic Relief Area Program Manager Syed Usman, MS Saidu Teaching Hospital, Swat Dr. Muhammad Naeem Awan and other concerned officials were also present.

It is worth mentioning that Islamic Relief in collaboration with the WHO has provided worth Rs. 04 million PCR kits for corona tests including Pippete Tips 11520, PCR strips 4000, Ependrof tubes 5600 and Cryo vials 3000 these kits will be distributed between KMU-PHRL and SHT Swat with the ratio of 60 and 40 % respectively.

Meanwhile, addressing the function, KMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zia-ul-Haq said that KMU and SHT, Swat have served the province on the front line during the Corona Outbreak. Besides government institutions other international organizations and WHO have also praised their exemplary role, he added.

The VC KMU highlighted that donation of various kits of PCR tests of Corona worth Rs. 04 million is on one side is a symbol of blind trust on KMU and STH and on other side this generous assistance will also provide free corona tests facility to the poor people of the province. He said that we are all proud of the service rendered by the staff of KMU PHRL and STH, Swat day and night against the Corona pandemic and hopefully this untired service to humanity would be keep continue with the same enthusiasm and passion.

It is essential to mention here that one thousand corona tests are being conducted daily in KMU-PHRL while three hundred corona tests are being carried out on daily basis in Saidu Teaching Hospital, Swat. Whereas so far in both these institutions there are approximately 117000 and 27000 corona tests have been done respectively during the past five months.

Prof. Dr. Zia-ul-Haq on the occasion thanked the concerned officials of Islamic Relief and WHO for their trust in KMU and for their generous cooperation and hoped that this sequence of bilateral cooperation would continue in the future as well.

University’s staff team and hard work is commendable: Vice Chancellor KMU

Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar in the short span of its establishment today stands at the highest level of knowledge, research, financial and administrative discipline is the result of exemplary cooperation and excellent teamwork among the staff of all cadres of the University, especially the role of Class III and Class IV employees in the process is unforgettable. These views were expressed by KMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zia-ul-Haq along with Registrar Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Gandapur during a meeting with the Class III and Class IV employees of the University regarding their issues. Besides Director Finance Wasim Riaz, Director Admission Muhammad Arshad Khan, Director ORIC Dr Zohaib Khan, Director QEC Asiya Bukhari, Deputy Director Audit Arshad Khan, Deputy Director P&D Amjad Hussain, Deputy Director IT Muhammad Sohail and a large number of other officers and officials were present at the occasion.

Prof. Dr. Zia-ul-Haq said that there is no substitute for hard work and sincerity, in the progress of life only those institutions were successful whose staff performs their duties with honesty and dedication. “Keeping in mind the large scale unemployment, it is a great honor for all of us to get jobs in different positions in an organization like KMU and the more we thank Allah Almighty for it, the less it will be”, he added.

He said that KMU is the source of sustenance for all of us and by fulfilling this duty with sincerity and honesty we can make it a source of halal income for ourselves and our families. Prof. Dr. Zia-ul-Haq said that all the problems of Class III and Class IV, especially the issue of their promotion, would be resolved on priority basis. He said that promotion is a basic right of every employee and by removing the obstacles in this regard, this right will be given to them in accordance with the rules and regulations of the university. He urged the staff to focus on enhancing their education and professional skills and the university will provide them with all possible support.

Responding to a question on allocating seats for children of staff in the constituent institutes of the university, the vice chancellor said that the university would look into the matter in the light of the higher courts decisions and prevailing laws and if there was no legal impediment this demand will be put on the agenda of the university’s syndicate. He hoped that all the staff of the university especially the Class III and IV employees would continue to perform their duties with more honesty and sincerity. Finally, the Class III and IV employees thanked the Vice Chancellor and the university administration and assured them of their continued support in achieving the goals and objectives of the university.
