It goes without saying that in addition to purchasing your knife, accessories will soon follow. These accessories can include the following:

sharpeners

sheaths

bags

cleaning kits

In this guide, we’ll go over some of these categories according to their price and handiness. Depending on the knife in question and its usefulness indoors and out, some of these accessories may be preferable to others. Budget is always going to be a factor, but you’re going to want to keep your knife as clean and safe as it can be.

Sharpeners

Here, we have the best knife sharpeners of 2018. Knife sharpeners are more needed than you think. On the molecular level, your knife gets flatter each time you run it through meat or the thick hide of an animal. These sharpeners are guaranteed to keep your knife as sharp as possible to do the work you need it to do.

Messermeister Chef’s Edge-Guard

The Edge-Guard is a simple sheath with two entry points for knives. It holds blades up to 8 inches in length and is not limited to chef’s or kitchen blades.

Victorinox RH Forschner BladeSafe

Victorinox is the renowned swiss army knife manufacturer, so it makes sense it would create a quality sheath. The BladeSafe holds blades 6-8 inches long (but comes in different sizes) and is safe to go in a dishwasher. It’s common to see these on kitchen knives but it has universal uses in terms of knives.

Ka-Bar 1216 Full-size Black Hard Knife Sheath

Ka-Bar’s 1216 only fits Ka-Bar knives up to 7 inches in length. Ka-Bar knives have a specific makeup and texture to them and its unlikely to fit any other type of knife. Nevertheless, this is a quality sheath for Ka-Bar products of those dimensions.

Whole Earth Supply Large Brown Leather Sheath

The Whole Earth Supply leather sheath holds knives up to 6 inches in length which include skinning tools and hunting knives. It also has a belt loop if you’re looking to attach it to your hip.

Boker Leather Sheath I

The Boker sheath is made out of leather and holds knives up to 3 inches in length. This sheath comes with a strap that buttons closed to keep the knife sheathed. Its a fancy and high-quality sheath that doesn’t sacrifice protection for looks.

Nite Ize Tool Holster Stretch

The Nite Ize holster may look like its more designed for multi-tool and foldable blades, but it works fine for knives as well. It comes with a hip clip that rotates a full 360 degrees. It can hold tools and knives up to 5 inches long and 2.5 inches thick. An over the top strap buttons down to keep the knife/tool secure.

Case Side Draw Belt Sheath

Case’s sheath is made of quality leather and holds knives and tools up to 3.75 inches in length, more specifically pocket knives. While generally geared towards Case products, knives and tools that fit its dimension should be fine.

What to look for in sheaths

Sheaths come in a variety of materials including leather and metal; the question is, which one do you choose? Your first step is going to be choosing the correct size of sheath for your knife. Leather sheaths are known to absorb moisture and transfer it to the blade, causing rust, so why do they still make them?

Overall, leather sheaths work great in most conditions except when they’re soaking wet. The “absorbing moisture” factor is kind of an overstatement considering that air oxidizes metal anyway. Many sheath owners enjoy leather because it’s comfortable and easy to use.

Regardless, the priority for you is to purchase a sheath with a correct length and width before you consider material.

Bags

Cuda Knife Bag

This bag may say its designed for Cuda knives but in reality, it fits blades up to 9 inches in length with different sized pouches. It zips up and locks for added protection from the elements.

Messermeister 5-Pocket Padded Knife Roll

Messermeister’s dedicated knife bag has five pockets with the largest able to hold an 18-inch long blade. Even though it only holds five knives, it keeps them protected via three zippers and water-resistant materials. The bags come in a variety of colors if style is something that concerns you.

Chef Pak 14-pocket Knife Roll

Chef Pak’s knife roll is designed more for the food and culinary jobs but still holds 14 types of knives. It comes with utility pockets for smaller items. It features no zippers and instead has two buckles that snap shut.

Boldric Black Leather Knife Bag

Boldric’s leather knife bag is your ultimate knife workhorse, sporting 18 different sized pouches and its largest pockets can hold a knife up to 17 inches long. It also has a couple of utility pockets for things such as tablets, pens, and business cards. It is strapped shut but two large belt buckles.

What to look for knife bags

If you have a lot of knives, a roll or bag may be in your best interest. There are certain products that market themselves as specifically for hunters or chefs but the reality is that any works so long as you have the correct length and width of pocket for each knife.

Chances are you’re going to have some knives that don’t fit in any pocket if you have an abundance of tools. The best thing would be to start cheap with the smaller bags and then move to the higher carrying bags once you’ve decided you need large capacity.

Cleaning Kits and Oils

Flitz KG

The Flitz cleaning kit comes with polish, wax, and cleaner for knives and guns. In particular with guns, the polish and cleaner will remove rust and keep the knife free of grime and other rust causing elements. Flitz gets major brownie points for being eco-friendly.

It also comes with a microfiber cloth that wipes down metal surfaces.

United Cutlery Metal Glo Polishing Paste

Metal Glo paste is cheap and uses for most stainless steel/carbon steel products including knives, axes, and swords. It comes in a 1.4 oz tube, so you’ll get plenty of uses out of it before you have to consider getting more.

Sentry Solutions TUF-GLIDE

TUF-GLIDE is an oil-free lubricant perfect for firearms and other metals. The best part about TUF-GLIDE is that while it displaces foreign elements on your gear, it doesn’t thicken when exposed to extreme heat or cold.

FrogLube FrogTube 5 Piece Kit

The FrogTube 5-piece kit comes with a variety of pastes and tools for you to do some deep cleaning of your tools. Each paste is USDA approved and eco-friendly. But what the real focus is that the FrogLube gets ride of rust and oxidizing elements.

What to look for in cleaning kits

Cleaning kits come with a variety of products, but you’re going to want to compare what you’re getting with the price. Products like the FrogLube give you all the necessary lubricants and polishes to clean your knives while having an overall affordable price.

In a matter of speaking, accessories within accessories are always nice, but your focus should be on the polishes and lubricants themselves before anything else.

So you’ve killed a big buck, bull, or bird. Now comes an equally as difficult part—packing it out. Do do that, you’re going to need a hefty hunting knife to cut up the thick hide. Before we discuss that, take a look at some knives that are made right here in the USA. Or have a go with the best hunting knife currently on the market.

We’ve debated whether to use folding or fixed knives before, but regardless of which you take on your hunt, the process of packing out will remain generally the same. Some other tool like gutting hooks might be necessary depending on what type of game you’re after, but it all depends on hunter’s preference.

Here are the basic steps that are standing between you and getting that hard-earned kill in your stomach.

Field dressing

Skinning

Butchering

It goes without saying that eating the meat right then and there isn’t clean or sanitary in the slightest. Do people still do it? You bet.

Post-Kill

Let’s say you’re hunting for the first time. The trick to packing out is not going in stabbing away at the meat with reckless abandon. If you do this, you’ll wear down your knife pretty quickly and spoil meat faster. Even thick, heavy duty steel can become frail when not handled with precision.

Hunting knives are not designed nor strong enough to cut up solid bone. For that, you may need a saw or bigger/heavier knife. Knives simply the field dressing process and the skinning process by separating innards from the body. For the purposes of this section, let’s say you’ve killed a big game animal.

Now, let’s field dress it.

The first step after you’ve killed it is to get its innards and organs out. Use the hunting knife to make careful and small cuts along the underside of the animal, starting from its anus all the way up to the ribcage.

This opens a cavity to pull the innards out without much trouble.

Use a heavy-duty knife to break open the rib cage all the way to the neck.

Use the hunting knife to separate the innards from the lining of the muscles and body.

Now, onto skinning.

Start from the top of the animal, near the thighs.

Some hunters prefer dedicated skinning knives, but hunting knives work fine. With a thicker animal, skinning knives may be preferable to speed up the process.

To successfully skin the animal, use the knife to cut from underneath the skin.

Pull the skin down from the lower body to the upper body.

Butchering the animal will require a heavy duty saw or butchering knife to cut away the meat from the bone. Now that you have a basic idea of how to use a hunting knife, go and try field dressing for yourself. You won’t be able to get it right if you don’t try!

Tell us what knives you prefer to use in field dressing and skinning in the comments below!

There are many different types and sizes of knives, each serving a different purpose for individual needs. Whether purchasing a pocket knife for oneself or as a gift, it is important to know that you are buying the best pocket knife for the job at hand. Below you’ll find a guide to choosing a folding pocket knife, covering all of the basic features to look for, as well as some of my personal knife recommendations.

My #1 Recommendation

Choosing just one pocket knife to crown as my number one pick is a difficult thing to do. But if you made me do it, I would choose the Patriot by Banner Knives. A relatively new knife to the market, the Patriot delivers high quality and excellent feel at a price that is hard to beat. Other knives on this list sell for $100 or more, but the Patriot can usually be had for around $25. It has handled every test I’ve thrown at it since I decided to give it a try, and I couldn’t be happier. It makes a great every day carry (EDC) knife, which is exactly what I needed.

The rest of this article will go over in detail the many different aspects of pocket knives. At the bottom of the page are other recommendations for knives that I feel are worth your consideration.

Types of Blades

There are many kinds of blades that you will find on the different models of pocket knives. Collectors may focus on one specific type or may prefer to have a variety of each. Every type of blade serves a different purpose, which is one of the many facets to consider when buying. To begin with, consider straight-edge blades vs. serrated ones. Straight-edge, also known as plain-edge, are ideal for clean cuts. They are often the preferred choice for regular use because they are much easier to sharpen than serrated blades. Conversely, fully serrated blades are better for sawing. Those who want the advantages of both can choose a partially serrated blade, although some people don’t like to have the combination on a single blade.

Beyond serrated vs. straight-edge blades are the many shapes and sizes. Pocket knife blades are available in no less than 12 styles. You can read about them all in this article, or see five common ones below:

Clip Point – With a cupped edge on one side and a sharp blade that comes to a fine tip, the clip point pocket knife is a great everyday tool. However, the tip of the blade does have a tendency to be fragile, which can cause the knife to be damaged when used with excessive force.

Drop Point – A drop point blade is curved on both sides, one sharp and one flat. The pointed end makes this type of blade is a good choice for hunters.

Hawkbill – Imagine a hawk’s bill and you will see what the shape of a hawkbill blade. This is a good choice to keep in a tool box, as it is helpful in tasks where other blades fail. The hawkbill blade is also attractive to collectors who wish to keep their knives on display.

Needle Point – Just as the name suggests, a needle point blade comes to a small, sharp point. A needle point blade is rarely found in pocket knives as it does not have a great deal of utilitarian use. Needle point knives are best for collectors who want unique blades.

Pen Knife – A pen knife is perfect for small tasks. This blade has the same shape as a drop point, but is much smaller and easier to control.

Blade Sizes

Does size really matter? Some say yes, while others say no. The size of the blade depends almost entirely on how it will be used. Medium sized blades, between three and four inches, are the most versatile. They are strong enough to withstand heavy use, but not so large that they defy laws banning larger knives. Smaller blades, those under three inches, can be helpful with small tasks. Any blade over four inches is better for collectors. Large blades are illegal in many places and should not be carried on a regular basis.

Number of Blades

Pocket knives may be single-bladed or can have multiple tools. The number of blades should depend upon your purpose of use. Many pocket knives have at least two blades. Generally, these consist of a pen blade and a spear point or clip point. The number of blades on a multi-tool knife can vary from three or four to more than a dozen. What is most important is that you purchase the pocket knife with specific blade(s) that you need.

Blade Materials

Blades are usually either made from stainless steel or carbon steel. Knife aficionados often have clear preferences of one over the other. If you are buying a gift for a knife-lover, make sure you first learn about his or her chosen blade material. If you are buying your first-time knife, keep a few facts in mind. Stainless steel knives are less durable and dull more quickly than carbon steel knives. However, carbon steel knives are prone to rust and stain. Generally, stainless steel knives are better for those who may be using their knife sparingly or in wet conditions. Carbon steel are best for those who expect heavy use situations.

Handle Materials

Handles can be made of virtually any type of material. Manufacturers choose materials that are durable, light-weight, or attractive. Aluminum handles are very light and durable, which is great for those who need to carry their knives with them during outdoor activities. Sportsmen often prefer aluminum knives, which are available in multiple colors. G10 is similar to aluminum, but is mostly available in black.

Titanium is a highly durable handle material that can be designed to create a beautiful, yet lightweight appearance. Similar in style is stainless steel, which is also less expensive. However, stainless steel knife handles are heavier, which make them a poor choice for those who don’t wish to be burdened by the weight of a knife.

Arguably the most durable knife handle is zytel. This thermoplastic material is touted as being unbreakable. Zytel-handled knives are perfect for those who plan to use their knives often or in extreme circumstances. Kraton is a similar material that makes a knife easy to hold. Many knife owners think that rubber handles are the easiest to grip, which makes them perfect for sporting and hunting. However, rubber is not as durable as most other handles, which means they will need to be replaced or repaired. This is less of a concern for knife users because rubber-handled knives tend to be less expensive than some of the other options.

Bone and wood knives, once common for everyday use, are more popular for collectors. Both can be carved with intricate designs, but neither are highly functional in hunting or survivalist situations. Delrin, a thermoplastic created by the same makers of kraton and zytel, can be crafted to create a beautiful knife, but the material is easily scratched when used for more than display.

Opening Mechanisms

There are three basic types of opening mechanisms on pocket knives: manual, assisted-opening, and automatic.

Manual Knives

Most knives are opened manually, usually with a nail nick. The nail nick is a small indentation in the blade that allows the user to open the knife with his or her nails. If you need a knife that can be opened one-handed, there are also thumb stud blades. These let you place your thumb within a hole in the blade, which is then pulled open.

Assisted-Opening Knives

Less common are assisted-opening knives. The user applies directed pressure to get to the blade. These are great choices for those who need fast access to their blades, such as survivalists and hunters. However, assisted-opening knives have fallen under some controversy due to their similarity to switchblades.

Automatic Knives

Example of an automatic knife.

Also known as switchblades, automatic knives require the push of a button or lever to open the blade. Automatic knives are seen as dangerous weapons by lawmakers in the United States and many other countries. Though outlawed in the late 1950’s, switchblade laws are under constant scrutiny and are regularly changed. Some states now allow the use of switchblades under certain circumstances. Those states in which automatic knives are illegal in all cases are Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Automatic knives are frowned upon by many countries outside of the United States. Though blades are not allowed on commercial flights, visitors to other countries should pay close attention to the legality of automatic knives before they are purchased within the land. Currently, switchblades are illegal in all instances in Australia, Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Laws governing the possession, use, and distribution of automatic blades vary greatly from place to place.

Locking Mechanisms

You must have a locking mechanism on your knife to keep it from clamping on your hand while using the blade. The liner lock is the most common mechanism. The liner keeps the knife in place, which is moved back and forth by the user to open and close. Other types of locking mechanisms appear on various points of the handle. The lockback is released at the back of the handle while the mid lock is released at the midpoint. A ring lock requires that the user move ring around the blade’s base to lock and unlock the blade. A lever lock, commonly seen on switchblades, pops the blade opened and closed. Arguably the least secure of all locking mechanisms is the slipjoint, which only needs light pressure on the knife to send the blade back into its home.

Pocket Knife Pricing

Choosing the right pocket knife also means choosing the right price. Buyers often equate spending more with receiving a higher quality item. This is certainly true in some instances, though it is vital to remember why you are purchasing the item before you settle on a price that is most comfortable for you.

Pocket knives that fall under $20 are often made of poorer quality materials. However, this doesn’t mean that the knives will not function well. It simply means that they may not last as long or may not have all of the qualities you hope for in your knife purchase. Likewise, a knife that is under $20 is unlikely to keep its value, making it a poor choice for a collector.

The best performing knives are those that fall between $20 and $100. This is a vast price range, but it is that which encompasses knives that are made with the sturdiest materials. You can easily find knives that will outperform their less expensive brethren, meaning you will need to make fewer knife purchases over your lifespan. This often results in a savings, though it may take years to realize.

Those knives priced over $100 are generally not meant for daily use. Collectors may spend more on knives that are kept on display. These knives often hold their value or even increase over time, making them an excellent investment.

The worst thing that could happen is to have that knife fail you in a time of dire need. That is where survival knives come in. Designed specifically to handle any situation you throw at them, whether it be splitting firewood, cleaning an animal, or even as a weapon, a solid survival knife is literally built to save your life.

Obviously, it isn’t worth buying a cheap knife that isn’t up to the task. So what are the best survival knives on the market today? And what factors should you consider when buying one? Read on to find out!

My #1 Recommendation

Before we get into the meat of what survival knives are and what to look for, I want to share my number one choice with you so you can keep it in the back of your mind while you read. The Banner Knives Ti-G10 is the knife that I’ve found to be the ideal choice for virtually any survival situation. It is made of the highest quality materials available with great craftsmanship, and it has never let me down. It’s fixed blade design makes it virtually indestructible, and capable of performing many tasks a smaller knife never would be up to. Now with that, lets dive in!

What is a Survival Knife?

A survival knife, as the name implies, is designed for survival purposes when you are out in the wilderness. Many military units will issue such a knife to help their teams survive in the event that they are shot down from the sky or stranded in some capacity. Anyone and everyone can use a survival knife, though it’s important to know how they differ. (Read the Wikipedia entry on Survival Knives Here)

It wasn’t until the late 19th century that survival knives began to emerge. Prior to that period, hunters and outdoorsmen would use knives very similar to what a butcher would use. A blade was simple. It featured the metal blade itself between two slabs of wood and held together with rivets.

The hunting knife was initially introduced by Webster Marble. This featured a heavier blade as well as pommels and crossguards. It wasn’t long before other manufacturers began creating other versions. These were often carried along with bolos and machetes by outdoorsmen and the military all the way until the 1930s.

Survival knives started to evolve during WWII. In Vietnam, Randall created a variety of knives and it was Captain George Ingraham, a combat surgeon in the U.S. Army that asked for modifications. This included serration on the spine to be able to cut through fuselage to rescue people who were trapped as well as a hollow handle to be able to store survival gear. The modifications were made and the first modern survival knife was born.

Today, there are all sorts of survival knives. They range in color, size, manufacturer and much more. While all of the knives share a few things in common, it’s not like you can just choose any knife and know that it’s going to work when you need it most. You have to do some research to find out what’s available and what they can do so that you get your money’s worth out of your purchase. Knowing more about the knives and how to search for one that will work for you is critical. Remember, it isn’t if you’ll need the knife, but when you’ll need it!

Key Components of a Survival Knife

Survival knives today can vary dramatically from one manufacturer to another. Much of this has to do with the various reasons to carry a knife. What you would need for surviving in a war is going to be different from surviving in the wilderness and therefore there are going to be some different features to look for.

Some of the key components of every survival knife include:

Tang

Handle

Blade

Sheath

Each of these will vary, but they will be present on each and every survival knife that you come across. Noticing how they vary can help you make the decision to buy one over another.

The tang is the part of the blade that extends into the handle. In most instances, the blade and the tang is going to be one solid piece to provide strength and stability. When you see a “full tang,” it means that the metal goes all the way to the end of the handle and these make for the best survival knives on the market.

The Ka Bar military issue knife series is another great survival option.

As for the handle, most of the knives are not going to be hollow because the tang needs to be there. It’s probably not a good idea to store supplies inside of your knife anyways for the simple reason of losing too many supplies. If you lose your knife, you automatically lose other supplies as well and this is not going to make it easy to survive.

The blade has to be considered as well. You have stainless steel and carbon as the two primary metals to choose from and both have their benefits. You also want to look at the design of the blade to see if it is straight or serrated. You may want one or the other depending upon what you are going to do with it. A new feature that is found with many survival knives is a straight edge on one side and a small area of the other side with a serration to be able to cut rope and other materials.

The sheath also has to be a consideration because you want a way to hide the blade when you carry it. Some sheaths are more comfortable to wear than others. Many will attach to a belt loop and some also have a flap over the blade to hide it from view. You may or may not want this flap because if you need to be able to reach for your knife quickly, it could stand in your way from being able to do so.

The survival knife can be used for many life saving tasks, including:

Hammering

Fire making

Food prep

First aid

Self-defense

Digging

Cutting/slicing

Hunting

Prying

Make-shift screwdriver

A strong, solid handle can help you with the hammering that you might have to do, such as hammering a post into the ground. A sharp, pointed edge can make for a great screwdriver and be used for first aid, food prep and various other things. The blade or blades are then going to help with everything else that’s on the list so you know that you can get things done.

If you are going to be fending for yourself in nature, versatility is everything. You don’t want to bring a lot of gear with you because it’s only going to weigh you down. Much of what you need can be found outdoors as long as you know how to work with what you have. A good knife is going to take you far. You do want to prepare for the unexpected, too. If you are unable to radio for help, you may be out in nature for hours or even days longer than you initially intended. You may face harsh weather and therefore you will need your knife to cut through more things and help you in more circumstances.

You don’t want a one-trick pony. A standard blade is not going to work. Instead, you want versatility. The list above is only some of the things that your knife can do when put to the test. You may be surprised what else it may do when you are out in nature alone and forced to survive.

Since your knife has to do so many different things, you want to make sure it is capable of doing all of these. Many people assume that a Swiss Army knife is a survival knife. While it can help you to do some of these things, the size is simply inadequate for fire making, digging and other such things. The size of the blade does matter and while you want something that is comfortable to carry, you want a blade that can provide you with protection.

Tips for Buying a Top Quality Survival Knife

You want to make sure you buy the right survival knife based upon where you are going and what you could possibly be doing. There’s no rule that says you have to own one and only one survival knife. You may want one when you do a lot of hunting in the woods by your house and another when you go camping in the state park.

There are some tips that you should follow to make it easy to find a knife that is going to work well for you and your needs.

Identify needs. Go through the list of what you expect your knife to be able to do. Once you create a list with at least 5 actions on it, you will be able to find a knife that can do all of those things. For example, if you are going to take rope along with you, you need a knife with serration to be able to cut through the rope. If you find a survival knife that doesn’t have any serration, you want to keep looking.

Find one that’s easy to sharpen. The steel that the knife is made from and the profile of the edge, such as hollow or compound, should be explored. You want a knife that is not too difficult to sharpen in the field, but maintains an edge for a considerable amount of time. For example, hollow-ground blades are sharp, but difficult to sharpen when you’re out in no man’s land.

Look at handle materials. You want a knife that’s going to be easy to hold no matter what. If you are in the rain or snow, you need the same level of grip on the knife as when it’s the driest night in the middle of summer. If you cannot maintain a good grip, you could end up hurting yourself with a single slip.

Protect your fingers. Some kind of finger guard is good to have so that you can protect your fingers from whatever it is that you are cutting. Past experience with knives may be able to tell you whether you need a large guard or if a small one will do.

Work within your budget. While you want to make sure you get a knife that does everything you want it to do, it’s imperative that you set a budget and work within what you can afford. You still have to be realistic, however. A good survival knife is going to cost you upward of $100.

Choose a well-known manufacturer. There are some great manufacturers on the market today. Whether you choose Tom Brown, KA-BAR or any other brand, you want to make sure it is one that you have heard of so that you can have a testament to the quality and the overall value that you are getting.

Read reviews. The reviews from people who have used the knife in the past as well as reviews from outdoor and military publications can tell you a lot about the blade and the overall knife that you are thinking about buying. The reviews will often tell you what the knife can and cannot do, how easy it is to sharpen, and what it’s good for so that you don’t have to wonder whether it is going to meet your needs when it is just you and nature.

The tips are things for you to consider so that you get the best possible knife. There are so many selections, so it will be easy to find a knife that’s going to meet all of your needs. They can vary in price, so you want to take the time to establish a budget. You also want to make sure to read the descriptions featured with each knife so you don’t go based on a photo alone.

Whenever possible, look at the knives in person where you will be able to hold them in your hand, experience the weight, see how the weight feels, and look at how your fingers are protected behind the guard. If you have large fingers, you may not be able to get away with a single finger guard because one of your fingers will protrude way beyond it, therefore offering you little to no protection against whatever it is that you may be cutting. Here is a video with six more tips on picking a survival knife:

Top Survival Knives in the World

There are a few really great survival knives on the market. You want to make sure you take the chance to review them to see if they are going to meet your needs. Reputation of the manufacturer, reviews by previous users, and the features that a knife has should all be taken into consideration when you look at a survival knife. Outside of the Ti-G10 I mentioned above, my top three are listed below.

KA-BAR USMC Utility Knife

This is a knife that has been around for a long time. It was first produced for the US Marine Corp during WWII and it became the standard for soldiers as a working knife. Survivalists, outdoorsmen, and military alike have tested this. It is an American classic and features a 7” blade length. It is considered one of the longer knives on the market. There’s also a stacked leather handle to provide you with a good grip and there is a generous finger guard that will protect your hand when working with it. There’s a flat-to-ground edge and you can sharpen it with ease.

Cold Steel SRK

This knife comes from Cold Steel, a high quality knife manufacturer. SRK is an abbreviation for Survival Rescue Knife and provides a significant amount of versatility. The blade is 6” long with the entire knife measuring 10 ¾”. There is a single finger guard with a checkered grip to make it easy to hold onto the knife for an extended period of time. You can buy one on Amazon.com or read my review of the SRK here.

Tom Brown Tracker

This knife was designed by Tom Brown, Jr, a wilderness survival expert that is highly respected in the community. It’s important to look at what this has. While it has a shorter blade length of only 4 ¼,” it is very similar in nature to the KA-BAR for overall length. The edge and blade design is what’s unique about the knife. There is a mini saw on the back with serration. The blade and handle shape also make it easy for chopping, which provides a survival took instead of just a survival knife.

While these knives vary by manufacturer, they all have a few details in common, including having a relatively thick blade, a full tang, and a good grip on the knife. When you decide to buy a survival knife, you want to make sure these features are present. As for the other details, it is a matter of preference.

It’s always a good idea to look at what’s selling and what’s the most popular knives on the market. They are popular for a reason – they work. The KA-BAR, for example, has been a knife of choice for decades because the design works well. There is no need to perfect something that has already been doing a great job in many situations. There’s not too much technology that can be integrated – it is simply a matter of choosing from a manufacturer that has the experience to know what does and doesn’t work out in the field.

If you are looking for a combat knife, there are many things probably running through your mind. How big should the knife be? What kind of steel should the blade be? What shape should the knife be? All of these questions and more are very common questions to ask. This guide seeks to answer these and more, and help you make the best possible decision on which knife you should pick to trust with your life.

Many consumers think that a combat knife and a tactical knife are the same thing. This is not necessarily true. A combat knife is also known as a military fighting knife. It was originally designed for use in hand to hand combat. A tactical knife on the other hand can have one or more military features and intended for use in extreme and varied situations. While not initially designed as a combat knife, some brands do include those features.

If being employed for military use, make sure the knife you choose meets the government standards. Also, some municipalities have restrictions on the types of knives one can own so it’s best to check your local laws before buying.

Finding the Best Combat Knife

Combat knives come in many sizes and styles. Folding knives, boot knives and neck knives were all designed for hand to hand combat. The most important feature of any knife is the blade. Ideally, a blade constructed of good quality stainless steel, carbon steel or a hybrid of those will work best. A blade that resists corrosion and is easy to sharpen is the most desirable.

The most common blade length will be between 5 ½ and 7 ½ inches. This is long enough if needed for combat but not cumbersome. Likewise, consider the thickness of the blade when choosing a knife. If it is too thick it becomes unwieldy. Opt for 3/16 to 1/4 inches for the ideal thickness.

The knife blade should have a somewhat dull surface. A razor edge is traditional though a slightly serrated blade has gained in popularity. A guard between the blade and the handle is a necessity. A single guard the same color as the blade is a good choice. Again, one of the steels listed above are a good choice of material for the guard. You want it strong enough to hold up against brute force.

A knifes handle is probably the most important part of the knife for the user. You want something that fits the hand well and is easily maneuverable. A good quality material won’t crack or shrink and is easy to grip. A G10handle allows for a good grip which makes it a good choice. Micarta is another option and comes either smooth or textured. Leather is a more traditional option and while some prefer it others choose the more modern materials.

Again, you don’t want to call attention to the knife by having a shiny surface so opt for a duller, nondescript finish. Additionally, a handle long enough to grip comfortably that isn’t awkward is best. A handle design that absorbs shock is helpful as well.

Lastly, be sure to choose a good sheath for the knife. A sheath constructed of a durable and weatherproof material works well. You won’t want anything that limits your movements or will get in the way. As with the rest of the knife the sheath will be a neutral color so as not to draw attention. The sheath should make for easy and soundless drawing of the knife.

The Best Four Combat Knives On the Market

The Banner Knives Ti-G10 is a new knife to the market that is turning many heads. Once sharpened to a razor edge it will hold that sharpness for a long time. It is a great knife for those who are willing to pay the price. While it is obtainable from many dealers, again, Amazon will likely have the lowest price.

This knife also boasts a five out of five-star Amazon customer rating.

Using the Knife

One of the most important aspects of owning a combat knife is having the knowledge to use it. Most towns do not have highly skilled combat instructors available. However, those wishing to either learn or upgrade combat skill do have options. Though the first choice would be a live instructor, videos can make a good second choice. Books are also an option though videos are usually a more popular choice.

Before buying a book or video it is essential to know what you want to learn. Whether it be advanced martial arts or a beginner video on self-defense it is crucial to get the right information. If not, one could end up frustrated and no farther ahead on the path to learning what they need to know.

For the beginner, a video or book teaching the properties of the knife and a few basic steps would be a good place to start. Then move on to more skilled instructions. Getting the basics down is key before moving on. More advanced users will select videos or instruction that will increase the knowledge they already have. Here is an example of a good video to start with:

In conclusion, the Ka-Bar is a good solid knife that has stood the test of time. The M9 Bayonet is something of an upgraded version of the Ka-Bar using more modern materials. The ZT 0160, while a solid product, is mainly for those who have a little extra cash to spend. And the Ti-G10 is an excellent option at an affordable price.

Rather than going with one of the above you might find that you have your own preference and that is fine. The most important thing is to find a combat knife you are comfortable with. Often it isn’t the knife but the skill in using it that is more important. So, yes-choose a combat knife that fits your style but choose one that is also comfortable for you to maneuver.

A multitool is a portable hand tool that can perform many functions. These tools come in a variety of sizes, ranging from a key ring size to the larger belt- mounted pouch size. Multi tools also differ in the number of tools they have and the manufactured styling of those tools, so it is important to research before making a purchase.

What to Look for When Buying a Multitool

One of the first things to consider when shopping for a multitool is functionality. Whether buying one for yourself or a gift, it is important to know how the tool will be used. Here are a few questions to consider:

Will the tool be carried on a daily basis?

Is the tool going to be fastened to a key ring, put in the pocket or carried on a belt fastener?

Is the tool needed for a specific purpose such as hunting, fishing, camping, military, survival experiences or electrical work?

The next consideration is the quality of the individual tools within the multitool. Quality is determined by factors such as durability, weight, ease of use, comfort and how effectively the tools function. Some of these quality points can be subjective, however there are key details to consider regarding the most common multitool components.

Knife blade: The quality of the material used to make the blade is important. Stainless steel is a durable option and a properly treated stainless blade is usually reasonably priced. High carbon is extremely durable and requires more maintenance. A great third option is high-carbon (HC) stainless alloy because it provides the strength without the extra maintenance. Choosing a good quality steel blade will result in less corrosion and better edge retention. Another feature that is important is the strength and reliability of the lock on the knife blade. A faulty lock can be dangerous in situations where a knife is being worked under pressure. The size of the blade is based on the size of the multitool. A three inch blade is considered adequate for most multitool users. If excess tool weight is not a factor then the addition of a serrated blade can be handy for some applications. Some styles have a combination serrated and regular blade, but this option often results in compromising the functionality of each one and is not a feature in any of the top selling styles.

Pliers: This is the second most popular tool included in the majority of multitools. The best tools have both needle nose and wider platform pliers. There are many models that combine the needle nose and wider pliers in one tool to save space and this does not compromise functionality. Check to be sure that there are wire cutters included in the mouth of the pliers.

Scissors: Scissors come in handy because they are perfect for completing the more delicate jobs that a knife does not do with great accuracy. The scissors in your multi tool should be self-sharpening and have enough room in the grip for fingers to feel comfortable. Smooth operation and fluidity of movement are important and spring action scissors provide the best and safest cuts.

Screwdrivers: Screwdrivers on a multitool are common and can be very useful in certain situations. Check for both Phillips and flat head screwdriver components as this will cover the bases for an emergency repair. If a screwdriver is a main component needed, such as with bike repair, there are many multitools with a more extensive variety of sizes and types of tips.

Best Multitool for the Money

The value of this multitool is that it is packed with 17 quality tools at a price point below $100. The versatility of the components and medium size (4-inch, 8.5 ounces) makes this Leatherman product a bestseller across the multitool market. A key feature that made the original Wave popular was the outside accessible blade that can be deployed with one hand. As the Wave was updated, the company improved features such as the size of blades and the strength of the pliers. They also improved overall safety by adding all locking mechanisms.

The Wave’s knife blade (2.9 inch)is made of 420HC stainless steel and is optimized by heat treatment. An alternate coating that is offered is called a black oxide metal coating and it is effective in reducing glare and reflection. This would be an ideal coating for those in the military or any situation where giving away a position would be detrimental.

Best Small/Compact Multitools

There are two sizes of small/compact multitools to consider: keychain and pocket sized. A keychain multitool is smaller and sacrifices some of the capability for the convenience of portability. A typical keychain multitool is not going to be able to handle heavy duty work. A pocket multitool is still portable although slightly larger in size. The pocket multitools are sturdier than a keychain multitool and they usual come with a more extensive tool set.

Designed with strength and longevity in mind, they are sometimes divided into two different categories: everyday carry and tactical purposes. The best multitool in this category is the SOG Powerlock 2.0. This large (7 inch/ 9.7 ounces) multitool contains 16 tools and technology that satisfies both every day and tactical categories. It also has cutting edge technology that is impressive. One SOG proprietary piece of technology that this tool comes with is Compound Leverage. According to SOG, this “impacts performance by employing multiple pivot points that generate greater handle travel in relation to plier movement.” This is also the first multitool to have two SOG Assisted Technology blades that open with ease when engaged, a feature not widely available in multitools. When comparing the tools in this category, another aspect of the SOG Powerlock 2.0 that stands out is the ability to change the tool configuration and tailor it to individual needs. Every tool is replaceable and the prices for the individual components are priced at under $10 each. This model specifically comes with piano key design individual tool locks. This allows the user the convenience of engagaging one tool at a time. The SOG Powerlock 2.0 is a large multitool(4.6 inches/9.6 ounces) that is usually carried in a sheath on the belt.

The knife blade and handle on the SOG Powerlock 2.0 is made of 420 steel and the tool finish is satin. The included sheath with secure clip is available in either black ballistic nylon with a hook and loop closure or leather with a belt through loop attachment.

Best Quality Multitool

Famous for creating the Swiss Army pocket knife, Victorinox also makes a line of multitools that carry the same craftsmanship. The Victorinox Swiss Spirit X is considered the luxury version of the popular Leatherman New Wave multitool that I mentioned above. The Spirit X design is centered around a pair of pliers like the Wave, but also shares some of the functionality of the iconic Swiss Army knife tools. The tool size is the same as the Wave at 4.1 inches, however the lighter weight (7.3 ounces) makes a difference in terms of comfort and everyday carry. The main comparison points addressed between the two boil down to the craftsmanship of the individual tools and the precision of the metalwork. For example, the Spirit X scissors are easier to use and the pliers are much smoother in action. The tool comes with individual springs so each tool can be opened one at a time and they can be opened from the outside without engaging the pliers.

Although some people might question spending more on a tool that functions the same as the Leatherman New Wave, the distinction is clear for multitool enthusiasts. Those who use a multitool daily and appreciate superior craftsmanship understand that the Victorinox Spirit X is an excellent investment at approximately $115. Included with the purchase is a high quality, leather pouch. Victorinox tools also come with a Lifetime Guarantee that has been praised by generations of loyal customers.

Every state of the U.S. has its own particular and unique weapon laws; as with so many different areas in America, there is no national standard. Washington, D.C., as its own special sovereign area, is no exception to this rule. For anyone planning to go on a trip to the nation’s capital who likes to pack a knife, it is important to understand what is legal, and what is trouble waiting to happen.

What Knives are Legal to Bring

One could be forgiven for thinking that the capital city of the U.S. would have stricter weapon laws than other parts of the country. This is the place where most of the national government operates. Ironically, it is legal to carry all sorts of dangerous knives in the city that the American President and many members of Congress call home or the office.

Knives Legal to Own in D.C.

Washington, D.C. actually allows most knives. Belt knives, lipstick knives, can knives, and many disguised knives are permitted. Balisong knives are allowed. Bowie knives and similar types of knives are completely legal. Throwing stars and throwing knives, among the more dangerous types in the hands of criminals, are also allowed. Even swords are allowed to be owned in the capital of the United States. What is not legal? Switchblades are the only knife specifically banned from possession in the District of Columbia.

Some Knives May Be Owned But May Not Be Carried

There are other laws that do not specifically ban knives but ban concealed and dangerous weapons. This covers some types of knives by default. The law states that “No person shall carry within the District of Columbia either openly or concealed on or about their person, a pistol, or any deadly or dangerous weapon capable of being so concealed.”

The fact of the matter is that there are knives that really are considered dangerous weapons, even by Washington, D.C. standards. The court case of Gorbey vs. U.S. back in 2012 saw the court of appeals declare the prosecution is not required to prove that swords are dangerous weapons since they have no practical use besides harming someone. As an extension of this court case argument, other knives that have no practical usefulness, such as daggers, are also dangerous weapons. The takeaway from this particular legal argument in the District of Columbia is that no one should carry concealed knives that have no utility besides inflicting bodily harm. It is alright to carry knives which can be classified as tools either open or concealed.

Self Defense Case for Knives in Washington, D.C.

In 2010 another court case, Mack vs. U.S., came to trial. Mack was found guilty for carrying a dangerous weapon. It did not matter that his intent was only to employ the weapon in self defense. The Washington, D.C. takeaway point from this case is that one should not carry around a concealed knife that is only useful as a weapon, regardless of whether or not the only intent is to utilize it for self protection.

The District of Columbia’s Specific Prohibitions on Switchblades – § 22-4514.

Another statute in effect for the District of Columbia pertains to certain dangerous weapons. This law mostly pertains to firearms, but it also mentions switchblades by name. “(a) No person shall within the District of Columbia possess any machine gun, sawed-off shotgun, or any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as a blackjack, slungshot, sandclub, sandbag, switchblade knife, or metal knuckles, nor any instrument, attachment, or appliance for causing the firing of any firearm to be silent or intended to lessen or muffle the noise of the firing of any firearms; provided, however, that machine guns, or sawed-off shotguns, and blackjacks may be possessed by the members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps of the United States, the National Guard, or Organized Reserves when on duty, the Post Office Department or its employees when on duty, marshals, sheriffs, prison or jail wardens, or their deputies, policemen, or other duly-appointed law enforcement officers, including any designated civilian employee of the Metropolitan Police Department, or officers or employees of the United States duly authorized to carry such weapons, banking institutions, public carriers who are engaged in the business of transporting mail, money, securities, or other valuables, wholesale dealers and retail dealers licensed under § 22-4510.”

The law goes on to specifically outlaw not only daggers, dirks, and knives that have blades greater than three inches, but also razors and stilettos. “(b) No person shall within the District of Columbia possess, with intent to use unlawfully against another, an imitation pistol, or a dagger, dirk, razor, stiletto, or knife with a blade longer than 3 inches, or other dangerous weapon.”

The talking point on this law is that knives that are released with the pressing of a button are illegal in the District of Columbia. Similarly any knife that has brass knuckle handles, such as push knives and World War I trench knives, are also banned. Oddly enough, Balisong knives are still completely legal, since they do not employ a spring or gravity to open, but use inertia. Since Federal courts have not banned butterfly knives like these, they are not illegal in the capital either. Regarding the stiletto ban, girls should be careful about committing a crime while wearing stiletto heels in the capital. They would not only be guilty of the crime committed, but also of the possession of a dangerous weapon like a stiletto. Talk about two crimes for the price of one.

Penalties for Carrying Illegal Knives in Washington, D.C.

The penalty for violating this law regarding the few illegal knives or knives with blades in excess of three inches are pretty severe in the nation’s capital. Look at the last section of this statute on illegal weapons. “(c) Whoever violates this section shall be punished as provided in § 22-4515 unless the violation occurs after such person has been convicted in the District of Columbia of a violation of this section, or of a felony, either in the District of Columbia or in another jurisdiction, in which case such person shall be imprisoned for not more than 10 years.”

Ten years is a lot of time in the big house for carrying an illegal type of knife. Guys better think twice about carrying a potentially dangerous weapon whose only intent is to inflict bodily injury. Ladies, beware bringing those stilettos to the District of Columbia.

The federal government and separate state governments regulate knife laws in the United States. There is one federal law that pertains to knife ownership and use. All other laws regarding knife use are state regulations. The laws will, therefore, vary from state to state and can even vary from one municipality to another. For instance, if you are a resident living in the city of Denver in the state of Colorado, you have to abide the knife regulations existing in Denver and the state. Now consider that in just a 30-minute drive away you would be in Boulder, Colorado where you also have to abide by the knife laws established in Boulder.

As you travel from one city to another and move from Colorado to Boulder or vice versa, you have to abide by the knife laws of the state and in between both cities. The fact that various municipalities can create and enforce knife laws can really make understanding knife regulations a thorny issue. Remember that if a state government has established a preemption, then the laws established by municipalities are nullified. If such is the case, as you travel from one location to another within the state in question, you only have to abide by state law controlling knife ownership and use.

1958 – The Switchblade Knife Act

Enacted in August 1958, The Switchblade Knife Act bans the creation, sale, importation, and transport of the switchblade for any commercial purposes. The Act also bans the possession and use of switchblades on Indian territories, federal lands, and any lands under federal jurisdiction. The possession or sale of switchblade knives is disallowed on Federal territorial or maritime jurisdictions like Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and other US territories. The same banning of sales and ownership applies to military bases.

The act does not stop an individual from owning a switchblade or carrying the knife when not on federal property, and it does not regulate intrastate sale/purchase of the weapon. The Act includes a definition of the switchblade to make clear what knives are included in the law. The knives are those that open by pressure of the hand when pushing a part of the device or a button or any knife with an automatic opening function, whether it opens from gravity, inertia, or both.

In the late 1980s, the Switchblade Knife Act was amended to ban the possession, creation, importation, and/or sale of ballistic knives. Again, in 2009, the Act was amended once more. Essentially, the act applies to anyone traveling from one state to another within the nation or for those who are entering property governed by the federal government.

Knife Ownership versus Carry Regulations

Ownership regulations define who can own knives and the types of knives acceptable in terms of ownership. Knife ownership laws also define those weapons that are unacceptable, as they are deemed dangerous and potentially deadly. The switchblade knife is one such weapon whereas the Bowie knife is another. The Bowie knife was strictly regulated in an effort to control dueling or knife fighting. The laws restricting Bowie knife ownership in many states remain in place today.

Just as some laws pertain to ownership, others pertain to whether a person can carry a particular knife or not, and if so, what restrictions are imposed on the person who is carrying the weapon in question. Carry laws will include restrictions on whether the weapon can be carried out in the open or in a concealed manner, and the laws will specify the knives to which the regulations apply. For instance, some states with regulations allow a person to carry a knife as long as the knife does not exceed a specified length and it is not concealed while the individual is transporting the weapon from one place to another. If the weapon is concealed then it becomes an issue where the individual is breaking the law. Typically, if a state has banned a knife from being a weapon one can carry legally, it often means the knife has no practical uses. In other words, the knife is, in reality, created for the sole purposes of being a weapon, and not a productive tool for day-to-day use.

Additional Knife Regulations

In some US states, there are regulations in place that do not allow an individual to use a knife to commit a crime or to display the knife openly for participating in an aggravating or harassing crime. Essentially, this means when an individual is committing a crime, if the person is unarmed, the penalty is less severe than it would be if the individual were found armed with one or more knives. In contrast, a knife used for utility purposes usually does not pose a legal issue.

Some states will regulate the age a person can be before they can buy a knife. Here, pocket knives, and utility knives are often legal for carrying to, from, and during work. Of course, the individual will also have to find out about place of employment regulations that can also restrict if the individual can carry the knife on the premise within the workplace. In New York State, for example, the shopper must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a knife.

As a general rule of thumb, knife laws in the United States aren’t overly strict. The 2nd Amendment to the Constitution ensures that all levels of government don’t become overly aggressive with any knife laws.

Ambiguous Laws

Anyone interested in owning and using knives, especially when wanting to carry and conceal a weapon, should be clear on any ambiguous language the state laws might have pertaining to weapon ownership and transport. For instance, it may seem obvious, at least at first, that words like “open carry,” means a person is carrying a weapon that is unconcealed and visible to other people. Some people question the ambiguity of this notion, however. The law does not specific how the individual is supposed to carry the knife as in, does it have to be fully or partially exposed? These issues are something a knife owner needs to be perfectly clear on before transporting knives from one location to another. Essentially, the individual who wants to own the knives in question must also be the individual that ensures all local state laws in relation to knife ownership are fully understood.

Open Carry Regulations

There are several different open carry regulations, including:

Anomalous Open Carry: The law about open carry differs from one state to another. With anomalous open carry regulations, the local regulations lend to the existence of various restrictions, including a ban on carrying a knife at all.

Licensed Open Carry: If a citizen has received a qualifying permit or carry license, he or she is free to carry a knife when walking and in a vehicle.

Non-Permissive Open Carry: This law means that people cannot open carry a weapon or one can carry a weapon under the strictest of conditions. For instance, you can carry a weapon when you are hunting or when on your property.

Rural Open Carry: In some places in the state, open carry is not permitted. If the population numbers are low that year in the area, then there are exceptions where knife owners can open carry their weapons.

Wyoming’s knife laws are very close to matching a “Constitutional Carry” concept, though they are not quite as permissive as that idea. It is legal to own any knife or bladed implement in Wyoming, with no exceptions. It is also legal for residents to open carry or concealed carry any deadly weapon provided that they meet the qualifications for a concealed weapon license. Note that it is not necessary to possess such a license, but merely to qualify fully for one and be a resident of the state.

Visitors to the state are allowed to own or open carry any knife, but must have a concealed weapons permit with Wyoming reciprocity in order to carry any knife concealed.

Wyoming’s state constitution makes preemption a non-issue. The law functions as an effective preemption, overriding all local ordinances on the matter.

Legality of Knife Possession

There is no limit on the varieties of knives which may be owned in the state of Wyoming, and which may be bought, sold, given or received as gifts, manufactured, and so on. All kinds of folding and fixed knives, single-edged and double-edged blades (such as hunting knives, Bowie knives, daggers, and stilettos), switchblades, gravity knives, balisong knives, swords, machetes, push knives, and disguised blades such as lipstick knives are legal to own in Wyoming.

Carrying these weapons is illegal on school grounds, in schools, or in other public property. Private property posted as weapon-free is also an illegal place to carry knives (though anti-gun posting is much more common).

Knife Length Limit

The Equality State does not impose any blade length limits on knives for any legal purposes.

Concealed Carry of Knives

Any Wyoming resident can conceal carry any dangerous weapon, including knives, provided that they meet the concealed carry permit requirements. These include having been a Wyoming resident for at least 6 months, plus a resident of the United States; being 21 years old or older; has not abused controlled substances within the past year; does not have a misdemeanor conviction in the past year, or a felony conviction ever; is not legally incompetent; and has not been involuntarily committed to a mental hospital.

The resident must carry a state-issued photo ID at the same time as carrying the knife concealed, in order to prove their residency.

Non-residents must possess a concealed weapons license from a state which shares reciprocity with Wyoming, or obtain a Wyoming license, prior to carrying a concealed knife or other weapon.

Other Knife Law Considerations in Wyoming

Wyoming’s knife laws are short, permit practically all types of knives to be open carried, and allow residents full concealed carry rights for knives and other weapons. Knife owners who do not use their knives for criminal purposes will usually never experience any legal difficulties due to owning or carrying their knives.

The cool, farm-dotted Upper Midwestern state of Wisconsin, noted for its cheese and its abundant hunting and fishing, may be a state in transition to a more knife-friendly legal code, but as of mid-2015 still maintains a ban on switchblade knives, gravity knives, and butterfly knives (also known as balisong knives). Furthermore, the state’s concealed carry laws are vague enough to allow police and courts to decide whether or not a knife is illegal to carry concealed on an essentially case-by-case, wholly subjective basis.

Any legal knife can be open carried in Wisconsin, however. The state does not have a preemption law for knives (though one may possibly be passed in the near future), so local governments can and do create their own ordinances governing knife carrying within their city or county limits. Many of these ordinances forbid concealed carry of any knife with a blade longer than 3”, or with a blade 3” long or longer.

Legality of Knife Possession

Most types of knives are legal to own, buy, sell, and manufacture in Wisconsin, with a few notable exceptions. Chapter 941 of the Wisconsin Code, “Crimes Against Public Health and Safety,” includes section § 941.24, which forbids owning, carrying, making, buying, selling, or transporting switchblades, gravity knives, and balisong knives. The definition of these knives is broad enough so that any assisted-opening knife, as, for example, one with a thumb stud on the blade, probably qualifies as an illegal switchblade.

All other knives are legal to own and open carry, including pocket knives, KA-BAR knives, Bowie knives, hunting and fishing knives, machetes, swords, throwing stars, throwing knives, daggers, stilettos, and so forth. Some are legal to own but cannot be openly carried, due to the fact that their construction makes their blade automatically concealed; this category includes sword-canes and disguised knives such as belt-buckle blades.

Knife Length Limit

The Badger State does not impose blade length limits on knife ownership or open carry, though local governments within the state are free to do so.

Concealed Carry of Knives

It is illegal to carry a “dangerous weapon” concealed in Wisconsin, but no precise definition for such a weapon is given in the statutes. Whether a particular knife being carried concealed is a dangerous weapon or not is a matter left to the judgment of the police and, if an arrest is made and charges are filed, to the judge and jury.

The case law precedent of State v. Summer, 778 N.W.2d 173 (2009), shows how the definition is open to interpretation. The defendant, a woman with two knives in her purse, was found not guilty of carry a concealed dangerous weapon for the box cutter in her purse, but was found guilty for having a folding pocketknife with a 2.5” serrated blade as well. The serrations may have tipped the decision, but this recent case demonstrates how much the law’s interpretation is left to the judge’s opinion.

Concealed weapons permits are available to Wisconsin residents 21 years of age or older, with no violent criminal record, who completes an approved firearm course, submits to a criminal background check, and pays a fee. This permit is a true concealed weapons permit, allowing the bearer to lawfully carry any legal weapon – firearm, knife, or other – concealed. Wisconsin is a “shall issue” state, and the permit will be granted as long as the objective requirements are met. Section § 175.60 deals with this matter in detail.

Other Knife Law Considerations in Wisconsin

Many Wisconsin towns and cities ban concealed carry of knives with blades 3” long or longer, adding more clarity to the state law. A 2015 bill, Assembly Bill 142, is currently under consideration in the Badger State. Should it pass, it will lift the ban on switchblade knives, allow any legal knife to be carried concealed without a permit by non-felons, and create state-wide preemption repealing all local ordinances at variance with these laws. Should AB 142 pass, Wisconsin will rank among the knife-friendliest states of the Union.
