Thanks to my knitting buddy Char. She knit the connecting gusset piece, so I have spent the last couple morings assembling, desiging as I go. This photo shows the inside of the bag with 2 bottle pockets, a large front pocket and 2 smaller pockets along the back. After I attached all the pockets to the lining pieces I sewed the knitted sections onto the lining. I reinforced the gusset with a long strip of wide twill tape. It will be integrated into the strap but I haven't figured out exactly how yet. Then I sewed all the sections together and bound all the raw edges with gosgrain ribbon. I faced the strap with another length of wide twill tape, sandwiching some polyfill in there for cushioning. Now I just have to figure out how I am going to attach the strap. Maybe some hardware.
Sorry only 1 photo in this post. Soon I will post photos of the whole process in case any of you want to make one of these bags. T minus 38 hours till we are in the plane!!!! 4 more hours left of my shift and I am officially on vacation!! Yay. I'm just a little excited, I love travelling to new places. I have a large backpack and many totebags but none of them seems quite right. I plan to take my big camera, my knitting, my iPhone and a moneybelt. I'm not taking the laptop (aaaahhh). I'm told there are many Internet cafes around. Anyway, I had these balls of yarn made from recycled saris that I bought at stitches LAST year. It would make a perfect messenger bag. So I started searching for a pattern. There are lots of patterns for felted bags but not much for what I have in mind. So I am making it up. I started with the strap 12 stitches on size 7 needles in garter stitch gave me a 3 inch wide strap. Then I used that guage to figure that 60 stiches ought to give me a 15 inch wide bag. So here is what I have so far. I like the density of the fabric. It seems sturdy. I plan to line the bag and put pockets on the inside. Now the question is, do I have enough time between now and our departure to get the bag done. Or will I be at REI on the last day franically looking for something that fits my idea.
Stay tuned

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Happy knitting! and drop me a line sometime

Rose gets slippers

I have knit a couple pair of felted slippers for Brian. I knit three more pair before I got one to come out right for Joe. (luckily one of those pair fit me, so I got some too) And now finally I finished some felt slippers for Rose. She didn't want the clogs that I have been making so I had to search for a more stylish pattern. I found one at French Press Knits that are just like the flats she wears to school every day. Rose picked out some hot pink yarn for her slippers. They are knit in sections, two soles, four uppers and two flaps. The soles and uppers are sewn together before they are felted except for the flaps. They are felted separately and sewn on later with the buttons. Here are the prefelted slippers. It never ceases to amaze me that these huge ugly pieces of knitting turn into something adorable after being felted!

I have had good luck felting in my front loading washing machine, set for a hot wash with no spin. I throw in a pair of old sneakers for a little wool abuse, then squeeze out the excess water with a rolled up towel. Then I let them dry overnight on the stove (off, of course!). Our old gas stove has pilots that put out a fair amount of heat for drying dishes and felting projects.

That blue thing in the back is a small envelope purse I made for an evening bag. I want to decorate it with needle felting and beads as soon as I can get around to it. More photos of that when I get to it.

I went through my old button jar with Rose and we picked out some cute leather buttons. For years we have used the pot scrubbers from Trader Joe's that have a sponge inside a wirey plastic cloth. They have gone the way of so many of my favorite things, no longer available. Since I already make our kitchen dishrags I was mulling over how to knit a scrubber from old plastic bags. We don't have many of those any more, we carry our own bags. But it suddenly occurred to me to try plastic lanyard.
Here is my test swatch I whipped out before dinner. I knit it with plastic lanyard held with a strand of sugar and cream cotton. I had to piece together a few lengths of the lanyard since our craft box only had scraps. The family will test it on the dishes for awhile and see how it works and holds up. I will keep you all posted.
Happy knitting! and drop me a line sometime

I'm a Ravelry Designer

Not that this is a huge deal, it looks like there are over 500 pages of designers. But I think I am the only one with a design for a stethoscope cozy! Here is the pattern.

Stethoscope Cozy
Yarn: Crystal Palace Cotton Chenille
Needle size: 6 (4.0mm) either long circular or double points
Gauge: 4 stitches = 1 inch, 5 rows = 1 inch
Skill level: beginner

Cast on 16 stitches, divide among dp or ends of circular
Join without twisting.
Knit rounds evenly until piece measures 18”
(or long enough to cover the straight length of your stethoscope)
Bind off.
Weave in ends.
Remove bell of stethoscope, slide cozy on, replace bell.

For those of you who read my blog and are not knitters, Ravelry is a community site for knitters, kind of like FB but with more useful information and connections. You have a name and a page there where you can keep track of all of your projects, patterns, and stash (that is what we call the yarn we own that is not being knit). Other Ravelers can look at these and this way we can see what other knitters are making. We can share ideas and tips, there are chat rooms and groups. And you can get patterns from other designers that either have them for sale or up for free downloads. My designs so far are free, they are pretty simple, but maybe over time I will come up with some that are more unique and worth selling. It took me a while to figure out the process of setting up my design site and uploading my patterns even though I consider myself pretty web savvy, it took me a while. So come see me on Ravelry, my name, of course is knitwitmama.
Happy knitting! and drop me a line sometime

Holiday Food and old stoves

Not much knitting has been happening here lately. I have made gifts for my friends and family and I will blog photos of those after they have all been delivered. Right now I just want to share a story about the baking we have been doing.

The story begins actually before we were married. Brian and I like old things, we live in an old Victorian that we are still rehabbing, after all. Twenty two years ago our church was remodeling their building and was getting rid of the old stove from the 1940's. It is a Wedgewood 6 burner, two oven, two broiler model. We put our name on the list to get it but we were #10 or 12 and didn't really think they would call us. One day they did call us at work to say that if we could get over there and remove the stove before the end of the day it was ours. So we bugged out of work, got the pick up truck and dragged it home. It was the quintessential "used by little old ladies on Sundays" item and was in remarkable shape. We cleaned it up and stored it in our garage for a couple of years while we got married and bought our house and got enough of the remodel done that we could move in. It has been serving us faithfully ever since.
Now if you know us at all, you know we love to cook, bake, can, and entertain, so this stove has gotten a workout over the last 20 years. Many loaves of bread (Brian bakes all our breads) countless quarts of spaghetti sauce, soup, chili, pickles, salsa, ketchup, relish, veggies, fruit and jam have been canned, and many meals have been cooked on this faithful appliance. It has required little maintenance over the years and it is a good thing because the closest (and only) repairman for these stove is in Berkeley. Well, last month Brian took a week long baking class at the San Francisco Baking Institute. It is a French baking school and he spent the week perfecting baguettes. Ever since he has been baking his breads using a pan full of stainless steel bb's in the bottom of the oven that he sprays with water to create the steam needed for the first 5 minutes of baking. This makes the perfect crust. He used to just open the oven door a crack and spray water in every minute for the first 5 minutes, but the BB's make more steam. Of course just before I planned to do some cookie baking, one of the ovens stopped working! The steam had blown out the oven pilot and it wouldn't relight. So we called the guy from Reliance Appliance to come out and he replaced some things like this thermocouple.

He told us that our stove was actually in great shape should give us many years of service. This is a good thing because he also told us that the refurbished stoves just like ours that he sells in his shop go for $5-6 thousand! The oven continued to work and we baked and baked. Then the same thing happened again! This time the Reliance guy told Brian over the phone how to fix it, and the BB steam method is no more.

Here are some of the lovely baked goodies we have been enjoying and sharing over the last few weeks.

How many cups in a pound? How many table spoons in a cup? Then they had to trouble shoot how to pack the ingredients so the layers would look nice from the outside, experimenting with the wooden pusher for the chinois, a spatula, and a saran covered candlestick bottom.

Only after they were putting in the top layers of the cookies did they realize that the recipe called for 1 1/2 quart jars instead of 1 quart jars! The moms didn't catch that detail either. What to do with the extra stuff? put it in a baggie? add it to the recipe so the purchaser of the jar would need to add more dry ingredients? They decided to make little cloth bags that would go with each jar containing a baggie of the extra oats. Whew! problem solved.

The fabric bag would match the fabric jar topper too and it would all look very cute tied up with ribbon. The moms each made an extra trip to the grocery store getting more M&Ms, candy canes and non dairy creamer.

Here are the cookies, chocolate chip, M&M, and oatmeal cookies.

And here are the hot cocoa mixes. They have chocolate chips and candy cane pieces in them.

And here is the final assembly with the fabric jar toppers and ribbon

All the while the girls talked nonstop. They discussed what they were doing, as well as the New Moon movie, where they like to shop, the homework due next week, upcoming activities and their teachers. They never stopped talking, sometimes talking louder and louder until the house was filled with their squeals and shouts and even they couldn't hear each other. I made the little bags while they were working on the poster for their table. Then we all sat down to a dinner of noodle casserole and salad. It was a busy four hours and the girls were very proud of what they had accomplished. I was proud of them too, they finished what they set out to do, they not only problem solved and worked together but they had a great time together.

PS I am exhausted.

Baby hats are so much fun to make; they are cute, small and can be whipped out in a couple of hours. Here is a red one that I trimmed with a little bit of chenille on the brim. Then here are two that I made for my colleague, Issam. His wife is pregnant with twins, due in January.

The yarn is from Chile, 100% cotton called Antuco. It is bulky weight, 13st to 4 inches and the best thing is, I found it on sale, so I bought several colorways. each skein makes at least 2 hats. I used US 9 needles and knit in the round. Casting on 40 stitches, knitting until it measures about 5 inches and then decreasing 6 stitches every other round until there are just 7 stitches left. Then run the tail through those last stitches, pull tight and weave in the ends. Voila!

My mom sent me this fabric probably 15 years ago and I came across it a few days ago and decided to make some little tea napkins. I just cut each square motif out and hemmed it with a decorative stitch. They are about 4 -5 inches and will be perfect for tea and cookie time.

Then here is a scarf I've been working on off and on. I got the pattern from my friend Char after I saw the one she is making. The hearts look like they are embroidered but they are just made up of slanted stitches. The yarn is KnitPicks Yarn of the Andes in Hollyberry. I haven't decided yet what to do with the scarf when I am done, I think it will make a good gift if I manage to finish it before Christmas.

Well, that is about it, since I am working full time now, I find myself being pretty lazy on my days off. I don't have much energy for anything but a few chores and a little knitting, so I am not being that productive. I spend lots of time looking at patterns and reading everyone else's blogs though and have collected quite a stack of patterns I want to make.

Today I tried to sleep in, which is usually no problem for me, but I tossed and turned and finally just got out of bed. Brian had been baking and this is the aroma I awoke to

Cinnamon buns. Mmmmm. So, still in our jammies, we are enjoying some tea with our buns and lounging on the couch.

I've been knitting a bit. But mostly mindless projects. This week one of the MDs was asking about my stethescope cover, and said her mother knits and asked if there is a pattern. He he he. It is just a tube, long enough to cover the straight section of the scope. I've been making a few more so that I have extras to be able to wash them more often.

I'm making them out of cotton chennile so I can just throw them in the wash with my scrubs.
Well, wishing you all a lovely lazy Sunday.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Happy knitting! and drop me a line sometime

Finished Rose's pillows

We picked a whole bunch of fabrics in pink and brown and had fun mixing and matching them.
Dad's socks
finished one and started the second. Yarn Harlot's pattern and pretty boring yarn.

Mom's shawl that I started while I was at her house last month. She had bought the yarn and pattern but decided the pattern required too much focusing to be enjoyable. I picked it up and got into it. This is the way to start lace knitting, on big needles with fat yarn! It is a Lion Brand pattern and yarn.

Then here is the curtain I made for Rose's newly painted room. Her colors are two incredibly intense pinks and a milk chocolate brown. We bought a bunch of fabrics in those colors so I am also working on some pillows to mix and match. More on these to follow.
I came across this little video that gives a basic explanation. Simple enough, are the facts he includes true? Medicare uses 2-3%, private insurance uses 20%? Notice that he didn't include education in the examples of essential government run socialized services. Why not? It has a government option for all, paid for by taxes, and a private option for those who choose to pay for it. Some question about how well it works, clearly many are educated well enough, some manage to get excellent educations and some end up falling through the cracks. It is not perfect, but it functions. Health insurance for all is not going to be perfect either, but hopefully it will function. And function well enough that not too many fall through the cracks and more people get what they need. I am about to become part of the public healthcare system as I begin my new job in the county ER, and I hope to provide care for everyone that walks through that door.
Happy knitting! and drop me a line sometime

New grad ER nurse

I don't know if I can call myself an ER nurse yet, but today at the end of my interview for an ER position the nurse manager said to me, "I am very impressed with everything you've done and what we talked about today. The current economy has not been good for us new grad nurses this year. Sure, there is a shortage of nurses, and people still need medical care, even in a bad economy. But, what is happening is the nurses that were expected to retire have not, and not only that, they have increased their hours since they need money too. The hospitals don't want to spend the money to train new nurses when there are plenty of experienced nurses around so they are postponing their new grad training programs, and they don't hire new grads without these programs. I keep hearing people talk about the baby boomer nurses hanging on to their jobs and I have to stop myself from getting irritated because after all I AM a baby boomer too, and I have no intention of retiring any time soon. Hey, I am just getting started!

I keep applying to jobs, first all over the Bay area and now all over California. I could wallpaper my room with all the rejections letters I have gotten. That is the hard part, I am having a difficult time not getting discouraged by all the rejection letters. I know there is a spot for me out there in a hospital somewhere, I just wish it would show itself soon, 'cause I am restless.

I keep trying to pass the time knitting or reading or doing some other thing that I used to enjoy, but I can't seem to focus these days. I keep flitting from this project to that project and can hardly pull myself away from the computer waiting for a job posting to come in or a response from one of my applications to show up in my inbox.

I do have a few FO to show you though.
First, here is Olive's sweater (the red one with the fake cables) I started it in the beginning of May see here. I gave it to my classmate, Trisha on the night of our pinning.

Then I started a sweater for one of Brian's coworkers baby boy. This one is the same pattern as Erin's sweater except that I had to adjust the guage because this yarn (Blue Sky Organic Cotton) is much thicker. I love knitting with this yarn, it is so incredible soft. I don't care for the color much though. I had to rip out this sweater a few times because I failed to adjust the pattern for the thicker yarn, and then I got carried away and knit too many inches before I started the decreases for the raglan sleeves.
I finally finished it the morning I left for Tahoe to study for the NCLEX.

Since then, however I have not been able to concentrate on knitting, or anything else for that matter. So I have been making washcloths and stethoscope covers for my friends, just to keep my hands busy.

Last week, the day I found out that I passed the boards, I decided to uncover my loom and see if I could remember what to do. I had put a blanket over the loom for the entire year so it wouldn't entice me away from my studying. I knew if I looked at it all the time, I would want to sit down and weave a few rows and knowing me, I wouldn't tear myself away from it to get back to studying. So I covered it with a blanket and didn't look at it. Well, when I looked at what I had done I couldn't believe how beautiful and amazing it is! I had started making some kitchen towels, I think the warp is long enough for 4 towels, but to tell you the truth, I am not sure anymore. I looked at my notes and tried to remember enough to read the treadling pattern. After a good twenty minutes of staring at my notes and staring at the weaving, I figured out what I had been doing and started weaving again. Wow! I finished up the last few inches of the first towel, put in a divider and started the next towel. It will be more yellow than blue. I haven't sat down to weave again. I am too restless, can't sit still, can't knit or weave. Some days I was sure someone glued me to the chair. Rose still asked everyday, "do you have studying, mom?" always hoping the answer might be no! I loved it though, I love school, (I know, I'm a nerd; the science was always my favorite part). I even liked taking tests, I like the feeling when I read a question and absolutely know the answer and can explain why, it is a powerful feeling. Then we got to work in the hospital with actual patients, and I was sure I was doing the right thing. I was scared out of my shoes that I wouldn't know what to do, and often, I didn't, but the patients always looked to me for help and comfort, and somehow I provided. I went from feeling like and impostor in white scrubs, grateful to be able to empty the bedpan; to gradually being able to manage 3 patients care by myself and having the sense that they are "my" patients by the end of my preceptorship.

Then we graduated a week before classes were over. We still had tests, and shifts, but we walked with our robes and hats and all. It felt great! That's me in the middle of my new friends. Twenty nine years since my last graduation, this one meant so much, and I appreciated the opportunity so much more this time.

We did a few more presentations, and papers and exams, and then school really was over. We had our pinning ceremony, where we get pinned by another RN as a way of welcoming us into the profession. It was very touching, and we celebrated being done, finally!

Here is my pin, the initials are for Samuel Merritt University, we are the first class to graduate from the University, after 100 years of being a College. That is a lot of nurses! It is inspiring to come from such a long tradition, too bad we didn't get the little white caps too!

BUT.... the studying wasn't really over yet. I still had to take the board exam, the NCLEX. So my friend Marti and I kept meeting everyday to study for a couple of hours. We practiced thousands of questions, and quizzed each other, and looked up obscure drugs and diseases. We even spent a couple of days in Tahoe with two other classmates to study away from the distractions of house and family. We really did study, though nobody believes us. Then I spent a day in Yosemite, by myself, hiking and enjoying the scenery before I drove to Fresno to take my test.
I couldn't have been more ready for this test, we studied all year, reviewed for several weeks, I relaxed for a whole day, got a good night's sleep the night before, ate a healthy salmon (brain food) lunch and had a latte, and walked into the test center ready to conquer it.
It was the wierdest test I have ever taken. First, they take you one at a time, after you have been photographed, fingerprinted and pockets emptied into the test room. They don't even let you take a tissue in there, I had to leave my bottle of water and my dark chocolates in a locker outside ( those of you who know me, I always have a couple of dark chocolates on my desk with me when I take a test, for that little boost when my brain wears out!). They sit you down in front of the computer and log you in and let you know that you are being video and audio taped during the test and if you need a break, raise your hand and the proctor will escort you to the bathroom. So, I sit down, a little unnerved by all the security, but ready to get this done. I speed through the little tutorial that takes you through some sample questions and push the button to start the real test. Now I should tell you that we have six hours to answer from 75-265 questions with breaks scheduled at 2 and 3.5 hours. The test is constantly evaluating how you answer each question to determine what the next question will be. It keeps asking questions until it determines that you clearly pass or clearly fail. I was determined to go slowly and carefully read each question a few times, since you can't go back and change your answers. The first few questions were pretty reasonable and I felt pretty sure I was getting them right, then boom, they got hard, drugs I had never heard of, questions about priorities that I couldn't rank, and then phwew, a few math questions. I love the math questions, because I know how to do them, they are concrete. It is the question about which patient you would see first that always gets me. Well, I am tooling along, I don't really keep track of how many questions I am answering, (the last time I looked at the counter, I was on 55). The questions are hard, and I feel like I am guessing on many. I am sure I am not getting most of them right, so I am shocked when the whole computer screen goes black. Oh NO!, there is a power outage! right in the middle of my test! will I have to start over? But no the proctor comes in to escort me out and I realize that the screen went black because I was done! I quickly tell her this can't be, I am not finished yet, I haven't answered enough questions! there is no way I am up to 75 yet. Can she check? She smiles and shakes her head, no, there has not been a malfunction and there is no way for her to check the number of questions I answered. In a daze I walk out, put my finger on the fingerprint checker (what, was I going to somehow sneak someone else in to take my place while being videotaped? it is really me walking out now!) I collect my stuff, and see that only and hour and ten minutes have passed since my test started. Well maybe I started a little bit early, since I arrived at the center early, let's say and hour and 15 minutes. Still that is 75 questions in 75 minutes, there is no way, I was going to go slowly! what happened? Oh no! what if I went so fast that I answered most of the questions wrong and I actually failed! I get in the car to drive the 3 hours home and try to think of who I can call that will make me feel better. Marti; she took the test the day before me and we hadn't talked yet. Aachhh, I hear the sinking silence on the other end of the phone when I tell her that it took me 75 minutes, she took 2 and a half hours with 2 breaks. I didn't even get a break. That is bad news, Marti is the speedy smart one. When we studied together she usually had the answer before me. I made some more phone calls looking for reassurance, which was given but I didn't feel it. Nothing was going to make me feel relieved.

It has been 3 days now and I check the BRN website way to often to be considered sane, and still haven't seen my name on the list of licensed RNs yet. I did the trick that someone said to try to register to retake the test and if the website won't let you, then you passed. It wouldn't let me, but I still don't feel relieved. SO I AM STILL WAITING! I spent today listing all the hospitals that are within a one day drive of me and checking the job openings on their websites. The job hunt is another story that I will save for another post. In the meantime I am trying to keep busy and WAIT.
Happy knitting! and drop me a line sometime

a good sign or a bad sign

Well, I took the NCLEX today and walked out of the test feeling pretty nervous. I think the computer shut down after 75 questions (the minimum), I am not sure because the last time I looked at the counter it said 55 and then all of a sudden it shut down. The questions were hard, so either I answered well enough that it moved me to the harder questions and I passed or..... I don't even want to go there. The only way we found him was to look for his green converse.

Here is Joe with Grandma and Aunt Amy all the way from Illinois to share in our family celebration.

Then there is Joe with Pat, who did this last year and just finished his first year at the College of William and Mary

And here is Joe with proud papa.

Joe with mom and dad,

The cake from the big party we had on Sunday afternoon and finally Rose, can't wait till it is her turn. Ripped out. I forgot that I had adjusted the number of stitches in the pattern because my yarn is a heavier gauge. UGHH ! No wonder when I was trying to lay it out for the picture, it was asymmetrical. So I ripped back to the great divide and started the right front shaping again. I marked the pattern with the new stitch numbers now, hopefully I won't make THAT mistake again. Joe is out with a friend, supposedly for dessert. They have been gone for 4 hours, could they still be eating? And Pat has been in Santa Cruz all day and just sent a text that they are driving home now. That road from Santa Cruz is treacherous, it makes me nervous. Oh, here is Joe now, wondering why I wait up for them. How do you explain without sounding like a crazy person? I wait up because when they don't come home, and I start to imagine the heap they are in on the side of the road, I want to be on the phone to the police to search all the ditches along the freeway, or when the ER calls to say they have my kid I want to already be awake, Joe shakes his head at me, Mom, come on, when does anything like that actually happen? It's not like we smoke crack or something! I could have reminded him that we just sat through the awards night at the high school where we listened to tearful parents give out scholarships in the names of the children they lost. And not just one of them, many of them. I was in tears by the end of it. It makes me realize how fragile life is, and how vulnerable our teens are, and they don't even know it. I could have reminded him of that, but I didn't, I don't want him to be afraid, reality is close enough, one of us wallowing in it is enough. So he sits down at the piano and plays. "I learned all the Bud Powell songs from this one album" "Don't you think this chord is awesome?" I smile and agree, I love to listen to him play, my own private jazz club. I'll wait for Pat, probably be asleep on the couch when he rolls in.

The photo above is another baby sweater started for a coworker of Brian's. I am using the softest cotton I have ever knit with, Blue Sky Organic Cotton. I knit this tonight while watching Sleepless in Seattle with Rose. She was laughing so hard she kept falling off the couch. I am enjoying having more time to hang out and BE with the kids.
Happy knitting! and drop me a line sometime

Backroads Coffeehouse

Backroads Coffeehouse is Alhambra High School's release party for their creative arts magazine. I love going to this event, the poetry, music, artwork and films that these kids create are amazing. Joe played with his trio, and Tina sang.
