Worked on the game a little today. After a few weeks away from it it’s fairly obvious that I’m gonna have to scrap a big chunk of the code. It’s very messy, and it’s going to cause nothing but problems in the future.

Accidentally made some game-breaking changes today. Spent most of the day fixing the changes. Is a lesson to not make big alterations.

Financial troubles.

So I’m currently jobless and need a way to make money to pay the rent. It means technically I’ve got more time to dedicate to Knockstone, but it also means that time is finite unless I find a way to fund the roof over my head!

Inventory system

Still picking away at the inventory system. When programming a game, things like inventories and basic GUI sort of pass under the radar. As such, the programming of these features is always underestimated. It has, so far, taken the most time out of anything I’ve worked on in Knockstone. Though it has been a really fun learning curve and I’m hoping once it’s done, I won’t have to mess with that side of things for a while.

Forum down

Had to disable forum registrations for now. Seems the latest plugin to stop spambots was making them overload the registration PHP script, driving them wild. Nobody is going to be using/seeing the forum or website for a long while anyway though, so it’s not too much of an issue for now. I’ll find a fix nearer launch time.

So I haven’t even launched this website yet. Nobody even knows about the game, and already I’m getting a lot of spam bots to the forum. So today, instead of spending time on development, I’ve got to set up a plugin to filter the bots!

Strange day

I woke up and really didn’t feel like working on the game today. First time since I started. The rock shovelling system is really buggy and it’s going to take me a while to fix it up. So to entertain myself, I had a look through the feature list and looked for something fun to work on. I’ve spent 12 hours working on system that uses a standard D&D style random dice roll to check the integrity of each plank on a ladder. If you’re going to use the ladder, make sure you check the integrity of each plank before using it! Or you could (literally) break your back/neck.

I’ve spent the majority of today trying to tidy some of the code. It was quite a chore, but I know as the project develops and gets larger in scope, I’ll thank myself. Generally I’m quite neat and organised when it comes to the coding, but sometimes when working on a long solution it’s easy to get distracted and forget about trying to make it easy to read. Today wasn’t entirely mundane, though, as I’ve also added picking animations based on the rock Y location. This was something that was bugging me. I’m trying not to get too sidetracked with the graphics side of things, but this really had to be sorted out!
