Let’s face it, some of our lesson horses are really funny.

We all know that Bilbo was a stand up comedian in a former life, and that, according to the academy campers, Bee was meant to be a bartender in New Jersey named Betty.

They told us their April Fools Jokes, and we think you'll agree with most of their ideas.

The biggest group of lesson horses to band together is ‘the nappers.’

You know, they’re the one whose afternoons ignore rule #1, which is ‘No napping after grooming.’

Earl, Fred, Hugo, Pumpkin, Sherman and Vaughn would stand at attention for the entire afternoon. We’d all know something was up.

‘Wayward Thomas’ would trot directly to his stall from the pasture.

Sparky would trot in to his stall, and not trot around the barn, or out to the ‘big’ pasture to relive his glory days.

Leon would TRY to be disagreeable in the arena.

Poppy would extend peace and love to all her co-workers. No blinkers required.

Sport would just say no to taffy.

Beau would trot like the wind in the arena.

Bee would perform finals level patterns with patience.

Whatever you're up to today, we hope it's full of Spring fun!

Our Spring show on May 15-17 seems like a long way away, but trust us, it’s really not.

We have some kind of event happening every weekend until then, so we’ve got the show pretty well planned out.

After reviewing the 89 entries, we created a schedule of classes and estimated time frames. Please keep in mind that the schedule will change to the afternoon in the event of nasty weather.

Horses have almost been assigned.

We’ve completed 3 of the 4 checks before we post assignments. Instructors must make the final review for safety and appropriate choices. Sometimes, riders get a little ahead of themselves with their horse  selections, and safety is our number one concern.

Some notes about horse assignments:

We have riders in all different phases of their riding educations. Fortunately, we also have horses for all places on the learning spectrum.

The easiest, ‘show professional’ horses such as Thomas and Baxter are used primarily for our academy riders who are either small in stature or at the beginning of their show educations.

We have some horses with a little more original thought, or whose gaits are not as smooth as our unicorns. These horses are great educators for our riders who are looking for more education and skill building.

 Progress in this sport involves challenge. Of course it’s fun to ride an easy, long necked saddlebred who knows all the patterns in the UPHA pattern book. Once your abilities are beyond the easiest show friendly horses, it’s time to challenge yourself with the more challenging faculty members. Sitting the canter on a horse like Earl or Sherman is a much tougher task than on Thomas.

Kudos to all the riders who thought outside the box and chose some of the less traditional horses.

We love our lesson horses and balance their usage carefully. We take the entire three day show into account, and balance work loads according to variables such as horse age, condition, whether they have small or big people on them, and whether they’re working walk and trot or walk trot and canter.

You may not show your favorite horse, and experienced riders may be assigned a horse off their list. Trust us, you’ll learn a lot.

Knollwood shows have a long tradition of showcasing horsemanship and sportsmanship. We’re looking to watching all the learning at the Spring show.

We’re looking for a concession stand sponsor for show weekend. For only $600, your name will be announced countless times over the weekend and will be included on social media posts. Plus, your name or your business name will reach hundreds spectators over the weekend.

The $600 sponsorship can also be split in half and we’ll have two sponsors.

The Knollwood shows make the biggest contributions to our banquet funding. As you can imagine, prices for our annual celebration have increased recently, and the show sponsors help increase the club banquet donation.

We hope all you Knollwood Kids enjoyed your snow day on Monday.

When asked about the day off, we heard that some of you slept in, some of you worked on projects, and some of you went outside and played in the snow.

While you were out enjoying the free day, you’d better believe that the school horses also spent their bonus day off sleeping and loving the unscheduled day.

On the night of the storm, most of the outside horses went out as usual to their pasture where they enjoy all the hay they can eat, and all the tea temperature water they can drink. They can also get out of the wind to ensure their comfort.

These lesson horses are used to being outside at night where they can play, act like horses, and rid their bodies and minds of excess energy.

The horses came in at 7 AM for snow day.

The best lesson horses in the world enjoyed breakfast, warm shavings and hours and hours of naps in their heated barn.

When the horses came in, the only horse who was really cold was our friend, and School Horse of the Year 2024 Fred. Apparently, we have to work to increase his already generous insulation layers.

The day was spent sleeping, drying out their hair, and snoring. Lots of snoring.

Once the horses were all dry and rested. Nancy made sure every horse was comfortable in their ‘big poofy’ winter coats before going back out for the night.

Who didn’t go out?

Our elders, Sparky and Leona stayed in their comfy box stalls.

Our ‘bay mare club,’ Bee and Fiona, stayed in, as the side pasture doesn’t have a great wind break.

Mowgli, the most recent addition to our lesson faculty, spent the night in the small barn. His former home was at High Caliber Stables in North Carolina, and we’re giving him some time to get used to the weird Wisconsin weather.

We DID find out that Mowgli would like to live a ‘clothing optional’ lifestyle. We’ll keep working on his life choices.

The horses were fresh and happy in their lessons on Tuesday, and were also happy to go outside without their ‘big’ coats.

Team Knollwood runs a competition based lesson program.

That means that we value hosrse showing and all the challenges and rewards that come with it.

Our in-barn shows are designed for even the most inexperienced Knollwood Kids enjoy a weekend of horse showing with friends.

Knollwood shows offer leadline classes for riders who are very young and aren’t ready to be turned loose, especially in front of a crowd.

We offer maiden classes for riders who have never shown off lead. Our most experienced lesson horses fill maiden classes to safely teach the ins and outs of showing. These seasoned professional equine teachers will complete the class even if riders are a little distracted, which frequently happens at the first show.

After the maiden division, we group the riders by age and show experience. Our goal is to give the judge a similar group of riders to evaluate in each and every class.

What’s gained by riding in the show?

Problem solving.

While we teach problem solving in each and every lessons, these skills are even more in demand in the show arena.

Horses are in a different situation, with audience members on the rail. There may be traffic on a nearby road, slower riders ahead on the rail, or small people running near the arena. These all require a rider to be scanning and planning ahead of events around them.

Goal Setting

Our instructors work on goal setting for our competing riders. For inexperienced riders, the goal may be as concrete as getting the correct diagonals.  As riders advance, the goals may include how to use the arena to their advantage, to ride more challenging horses, or to have beautiful transitions.

Resilience

Working with horses teaches us about resilience.

Riders learn quickly that they don’t control everything, that weather, movements in the audience, dog and cats, and horse brains are unpredictable. Horse people figure out how to communicate well with their horse as they watch the environment around them.

They also learn that errors will be made, ribbons will vary, there are good days and not so good days, and none of it is personal.

Hug your horse, and move on.

Sportsmanship

Team Knollwood is known far and wide for their sportsmanship.

All Knollwood Kids cheer for everyone, congratulate winners, compliment fellow competitors, and love their horses.

The judge’s decision is what we ask for, and we accept it.

We don’t question or criticize placings. The judge saw what they saw, and placed the class accordingly.

Handling Pressure

Anyone who enters the show ring on a horse is a brave soul.

It’s not easy, and it’s full of uncertainties. We applaud our riders who further their education by riding in a more challenging situation for both horse and rider.

Real learning thrives when you head out of your comfort zone.

Joy

You’ll see plenty of joy on the faces riders on horses in the arena. The smiles can be from reaching a goal, like a new rider getting all their diagonals. The happy face might be from meeting challenges head on and getting great places in the ring by looking ahead and organizing thought. Probably the biggest reason for joy is the cheering from friends and relatives. 

You’ll see riders lining the rail, and cheering on the competitors.

This is what it’s all about.

We believe horse showing builds many, many skills, and some of them even involve riding.

So, last week, admin Wendy was giving a tour to a family with 2 small future riders. One of the girls noticed that all the horses in the arena were ‘brown,’ and asked if we painted the horses so they were all the same color.

At that moment, a rider brought big gray Earl through the chute door. The younger sister said, ‘It looks like they missed one.’

Welcome to the third installment of how to identify our lesson horses. This week, we’ll meet all the horses that we ‘missed’ with the brown paint.

Bee

Bee is a powerhouse.

Registered in the Hackney society as Honey Bee, she’s a character through and through.

She was a tad, well, feral when she arrived, and has learned the Knollwood way. It’s easier to be agreeable than to offer your own version of how things should go.

She now gladly teaches walk trot lessons, teaches riders how to slow up her energy, and will even canter in a teacup with the right direction.

A favorite of Knollwood Kids, Bee is friendly, addicted to mints, and is a fierce competitor of ‘musical towels.’

How to recognize Bee in the arena?

She’s a tiny bay mare.

With her short legs, she takes many, many steps.

Bee still lacks patience, and stopping for long is a challenge.

After her lessons, there’s usually a child hugging her.

Bilbo

Where to begin?  Let’s state the obvious, he’s yellow.

Bilbo is a round Hafflinger and is a comedic genius. None of the instructors would be shocked to see him on a late night talk show doing stand up.

Our favorite yellow lesson horse came to us from a lesson program in Rockford, Illinois.

He does yoga in his stall to maintain his flexibility.

Bilbo will take care of the smallest riders in the arena, and will even make cornering decisions when needed.

He may not canter, but he’s a mainstay of our beginner program, keeping all riders safe and challenged just a little.

Now to recognize Bilbo in the arena?

He is adorable.

Bilbo has a thing about instructor Molly. He likes to pee in the arena during lessons she’s teaching. Of course, he does in in the furthest corner so she can’t stop him.  Only Molly.

Bilbo will challenge little riders by stopping. That’s him being ‘bad.’

Mostly, you’ll see very wee riders trotting around on him with big smiles on their faces.

Earl

Earl  is a thing of beauty.

Our huge gray quarter horse catches your eye the minute he saunters into the arena.

Not built for speed, he closely resembles a battleship, a whale, or an elephant depending on who you ask. (For Halloween this year, he was a Knollwood school bus. You get the idea.)

Instructor Court is in love with Earl, and the feeling is mutual. Maybe it's because they share an almost unbelievable calmness?

Earl is smooth, slow, patient, and kind. He’s a mainstay of our minicamps, ‘Welcome to Knollwood’ sessions, and summer riding school.

He has a jog trot to die for, and our experienced riders have helped him develop a nice canter. He’s a bareback god.

Earl has one drawback: He’s no good for games. That slow speed we cherish for beginners? That’s his only gear. But he’s sooo handsome going at the speed of a turtle.

How to spot Earl in the arena?

He’s gray, he’s huge, and he’s slow.

Earl is frequently trotting around with a small child aboard.

This handsome guy teaches the smallest of riders how to circle and how to stop.

He is the best.

Fiona

The second member of our ‘bay mares club,’ Fiona is Bee’s best friend.

Fiona came to us from a lesson program in Kentucky.

This pretty ½ Morgan and ½ Arabian mare is a step-up ride. She pays close attention to what her rider asks for, and does it.

Fiona has beautifully smooth gaits, is cute as a button, and teaches riders who are ready to learn about a horse’s brain.

How to recognize Fiona in the arena?

She’s a taller version of Bee’s coloring.

She’s not particularly slow and is frequently teaching patterns to her riders.

Fiona likes to talk to Bee when they’re both in the arena.

She doesn’t have a great sense of humor, and doesn’t enjoy games. She enjoys following the rules.

Sherman, as in 'Sherman Tank"

Sherman is the beautiful black ½ quarter horse ½ Morgan you see moving around the arena teaching small riders all about posting, diagonals, and steering.

Sherman came to us from a lesson program in Kentucky.

If you believe in reincarnation, we had a very similar fellow named Tony in the past. Their physical and mental similarities are spooky.

Like Earl, Sherman is a tank. Almost as wide as he is tall, Sherman is an ideal beginner horse who is steadfast, slow, and smart. He’s also a wonderful bareback horse since he’s like riding your dining room table.

Our advanced riders and helpers have helped Sherman develop a really lovely canter.

How to recognize Sherman in the arena?

Not to be sarcastic, but he’s our only black lesson horse.

He’s wide and slow.

Sherman loves people, and sometimes stops to chat with instructors.

Sparky

School horse of the year in 2021, Sparky is a bona fide legend.

Sparky lives in the coveted last stall on the right near the screen door where he enjoys a clear view of the great outdoors. He also enjoys breezes on warm nights. He deserves all his benefits.

Sparky has taught every current Knollwood Kid at one time or another.

Named ‘Sparky’ because he’s not, he loves his people, pets,  and his life.

This little gray quarter horse came to us from a fantastic horse dealer who ‘saw a kind look in his eyes’ and brought Sparky to us.

Sparky is a tiny tot star, can instill confidence in the most timid of riders, and is his own man. When he comes in for the day, he has to trot past his stall and check out the entire barn before he eats his lunch.

Sparky loves mints almost as much as he loves his spa treatments. He refuses to be tied up, and we’re happy to allow him his one rule.

Sparky surprises us with his competitive streak, even in beginner games of ‘Red Light, Green Light.’ There are days when he HAS TO WIN.

How to spot Sparky in the arena?

He’s the little gray quarter horse, not the huge one.

He doesn’t canter, is frequently accompanied by an instructor in the arena because Sparky’s riders are frequently very small. Oh, and he has big beautiful brown eyes.

He’s one in a million.

You’ve now met all of our lessons horses.

We’re sure you agree with us that we have an outstanding group of equine faculty members.

They’re the best, and we cherish each and every one.

Our educational journey continues.

Last week, we offered a guide identifying our ‘brown’ lesson horses who live outside at night. These are our priceless fellas who teach beginners and advanced beginners as well as being stars of the Knollwood in-barn shows.

This week, we’ll help parents and friends identify our brown box stall horses. These horses are all registered American Saddlebreds, and many of them have been shown at the ‘A’ level. They are all well-educated, although they don’t always look like it.

These brownies live inside at night and go out for recess during the day before lessons. (Only when the weather permits, of course. They don’t like rain, snow, or wind. Don’t even mention bugs!)

So here, in alphabetical order are our rarified lesson horses that serve our academy riders and above.

Alex

Known in the registry as Perilous, this giant chestnut is a sight to behold. He’s big going, smooth, bold, and is perfectly ‘Mattonized.’ (For those unfamiliar with the term, 'Mattonized' is the utmost compliment. It means that the horse knows his boundaries, can do any pattern at any time, and has a great respect for Scott and Carol.)

He has a couple of imperfections.

He’s prone to sore backs, so he’s carefully padded, and doesn’t carry big people.  Alex LOVES his small, accomplished riders.

Alex is not smart. He’s lovely, but frequently is unaware of what day it is, what he did yesterday, or what he had for breakfast, even though he has the same thing every day.

He frequently thinks the arena has been remodeled and that new doors have been added. The chute door is particularly challenging.

How to identify Alex in the arena?

He’s a big beautiful ‘brown’ horse. All brown.

He’s frequently teaching small riders patterns.

He may have ‘that look in his eye’ as he approaches the chute door. No worries, it’s just his few brain cells trying to contact each other.

He’s a great guy and a good teacher.

Baxter, AKA the GOAT

Known in the ASHBA registry as A Champagne Toast, Baxter is a legend through and through.

Both of his parents were World Champions, and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

He’s lived at Knollwood since he was four years old, and has been teaching ever since. He’s been an integral part of the education of all our  equitation champs ever since.

Future Triple Crown winner Nick winning with Baxter at Madison Classic

He’s the school master who’s safe in any situation, and LOVES going to a horse show.

Fully Mattonized, he’ll perform any pattern for the tiniest of riders, and will throw a few wrenches into patterns for more advanced riders who think ‘it’s just Baxter.’  It’s never ‘just’ Baxter.

This once in a lifetime horse has few faults.

He doesn’t like his ears clipped for shows, but that’s about it.

He’s smart as  a whip, loves mints more than anything, and loves his people. We think he identifies as a human.

How to spot Baxter in the arena?

He’s the one with a small person on him, teaching patterns with a smile on his face.

Beau

Beau is the rare combination of an inside and outside horse. Beau is used by all of our riders but lives the ‘inside’ life.  His personality isn’t made for the great outdoor playground, so he has the best of both lesson horse worlds.

Beau is officially registered as Beaucoup Revival, and came to us from Colorado.

Beau can do it all. In a pinch, he’ll enjoy a ‘Welcome to Knollwood’ class, he’ll enjoy a bareback group for our academy stars, and is a mainstay of summer academy camps.

He has a beautiful stripe on his face, and is always alert. He’s not quite sure about our new arena heaters yet, but he’s working on it.

Occasionally, his brain short wires and be believes he’s trotting down the chute at Louisville. It only lasts a minute. Trust us.

How to identify Beau in the arena?

He’s the big chestnut with lots of white trim.

He’s usually not going really fast, but is totally aware of everything, and is on ‘heater alert.’

Beau is frequently teaching smaller riders about diagonals and circles.

You can see his kindness through the windows.

Mariah

Mariah is a queen.

An accomplished equitation star in her former life, Mariah teaches show barn riders about the mind of a show horse.

Mariah’s registered name is ‘Melrose Mariah,’ and was eq star Natalie’s before she joined the Knollwood team.

She’s beautiful, a little lazy, and is so very well educated. Heck, she was a top contender in national finals with Natalie.

How to spot Mariah in the arena?

She’s a beauty queen.

She teaches her riders all about follow-through, especially when they’re asking for her ‘tricky’ lead.

Murphy

Where to begin…

Murphy is a big beautiful American Saddlebred whose official name is Irish Victory.

Owned by Jodi Nelson, he’s become an important part of our academy team.

He has beautiful gaits and is lovely going down the rail.

Murphy and Scott have spent many hours of quality time together.  Murphy has learned that it is best to wait for instruction from his rider instead of going his own way.

How to recognize Murphy in the arena?

He’s the pretty chestnut with an elongated star on his face.

His riders look pretty still above those smooth gaits of his.

Murphy will find scary things at the side door, the show barn door, or the chute door.

At the 27 minute mark of the lesson, Murphy loses the ability to walk. He thinks he must trot. Alas, it rarely works.

Nacho

Nacho is destined to be a legend.

His real name is Trust Fund Blues, and is cute as a button.

Born at Knollwood, Nacho has the same mom as Vaughn.

He’s been a bit of punk his whole life. With lots of show barn rider lessons under his belt, and lots of personal time with the show barn staff, he’s become an academy star.

While he's earning his star in the academy hall of fame, Nacho enjoys chewing on his reins. Even with a towel as a bib, he makes a grand effort. No worries, we have this one figured out.

Nacho is a standout in the single bit division, and has helped a number of our show barn riders gain show ring experience.

How to spot Nacho in the arena?

He’s adorable.

He loves being a horse, looking down the rail with his ears up while keeping them on doors and any other source of excitement for his brain.

He can turn on a dime.

Best Nacho moment of the year? He shied and lost his rider while doing a four one and a half pattern this winter. After losing his rider, he completed the 1 ½ circle. And stopped on the center line waiting for his rider.

Mattonized indeed.

Oscar

The newest member of our academy team, Oscar is registered as Oscar Nominee.

This big, beautiful guy would be a model if he were human.

He was a star in the western division before he joined the academy ranks.

Oscar has a very high opinion of himself, and has been on a self-improvement journey over the winter with Carol and her equitation stars.

Oscar has smooth gaits, a quick mind, and can’t be missed going down the rail.

How to recognize Oscar in the arena?

He’s big and beautiful with a perfect star on his forehead.

He’s becoming a pattern master and can frequently be seen in center ring.

He’s frequently the  biggest guy in the arena.

Sport

This one has a BIG personality.

His registered name is Callaway’s Never Wanted More, and comes from Callaway Hills and a tradition of wonderful horses.

Sport had quite a show career in the southeast where he was a pleasure horse, a park horse, and an equitation horse. He finished his show career as a 10 and under walk and trot equitation horse.

Sport is an important part of our academy team, and loves going to horse shows. He also loves working at home where he instructs riders on following through until they get what the want.

Fun facts about Sport?

He occasionally likes to overreact to oncoming horse traffic. When he’s feeling extra fresh, he’ll attempt to spin and go the other way.

Many a Knollwood Kid has learned the ways of Sport, and how to prevent and/or deal with his shenanigans.

Sport LOVES, and we cannot stress this enough, LOVES taffy.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen him devour any flavor of taffy.  The ‘mouth noises’ Sport makes after taffy treats are not to be missed. Insiders refer to them as his ‘toilet noises.’

How to spot Sport in the arena?

He’s usually teaching our up and coming academy stars who are learning the ways of a former show horse.

He does lots of patterns, lots of no stirrup work,  and lots of canter starts.

Watch his ears when horses pass him going the opposite direction. It’s his only trick, and he brings it out a couple of times a year. That’s it.

Willow

One of the few ladies on the team,  Willow is Knollwood born and bred. This pretty mare’s registered name is Dance Party. Instructor to the show barn riders, Willow is her own mare.

She loves to act lazy the first direction, and go like she’s at Freedom Hall the second direction. She finishes the lesson ‘totally exhausted’ in center ring, looking like we should call horsey 911.

Baby Willow.

Willow is super friendly in her stall, and enjoys spending time with her riders.

How to spot Willow in the arena?

She’s the one who does her job well, and then acts like exhaustion will take her form this earth.

We adore our lesson horses who all have their own personalities.

These forms now include sign offs for cancellation policies, social media usage,  and billing policies as well as a photo release.

This program will also allow us to update contact info for all of our riders.

The academy team is heading to Beyond Stable Farm for our first show of the season, and we can hardly wait.

From some of our most accomplished academy stars to riders making their academy debuts, we’re looking forward to an amazing weekend of horse showing.

As all of Team Knollwood knows, we choose our lesson horses by their brains, not their outward appearance. And yes, we know that if we purchased by color assortment, it would be easier to identify our equine instructors.

But, we have the best assortment of lesson horses, and the majority happen to be brown. 

Here’s some insider information to help parents identify which horsey faculty member your Knollwood Kid is working with.

And yes, we’re thinking of pop quizzes in the lounge.

This week, we’ll start with the ‘outside’ brownies, who spend their evenings in the pasture being horses, eating hay, playing with friends, drinking warm water in the winter, and sleeping.

This is Fred, the 2024 School Horse of the Year.

You will NEVER see him moving fast enough to blow back his mane in the arena. This is Fred when the dinner bell rings. Only.

Fred is a well-fed Quarter Horse who lives in the last stall on the left. You may recognize his butt from when it’s sticking out in the aisle while he naps in his oversized stall.

Judging by his snoring, we feel he may have sleep apnea. Anyone have an extra-large CPAP mask they might like to share?

Fred is an angel.

He teaches our newest riders with patience, kindness, and, yes, a well-developed laziness.

Fred maintains his trotting speed to teach posting, will steer anywhere, and will sometimes keep riders out of tricky situations by changing course when he feels it’s needed.

How to identify Fred in the arena?

 He’s slow.

 He likes to cut corners.

 He listens to the smallest of riders.

 He loves standing in the middle for still work.

When needed, he can even do a lesson without a rider.

His hobbies include listening to accordion music, eating mints and just about anything else, and Olympic level napping.

This is Leon, AKA Dear Sweet Leon, or DSL

If you look carefully, you can see the outline of his invisible unicorn horn.

Leon is a most handsome American Saddlebred whose registered name is ‘Keep the Change, Sir’.

Leon has a perfect star on his forehead, and no other white on his body. With no white legs, he’s the dream of our academy show techs.

Leon has the smooth gaits of a unicorn and is one of our cantering teachers.

He’s also the first academy horse most of our new show riders meet. He has the manners of a gentleman, the looks of a model, and the patience of a saint.

How to identify Leon in the arena?

He’s not the fastest guy in the arena.

When cantering, even the newest of riders sit smoothly in the saddle.

In inexperienced hands, Leon will turn his head to the left. Alignment is one of the many lessons he teaches.

This is Poppy.

Poppy is an unregistered Saddlebred mare who came to us from another lesson program.

Poppy is unique.

She has an incredibly smooth trot and enjoys teaching small riders most of all.  

Poppy has a consistent trotting speed and is easy to steer.

How to identify Poppy in the arena?

Poppy wears blinkers to keep her mind on her job instead of paying attention to horses around her.

You’ll often see very small people on her, trotting very slowly.

Personal notes?

Poppy is a loner.

She doesn’t love other horses, or even wild turkeys in her pasture.

But she trots like a metronome in the arena, so who cares?

This is Pumpkin, our 2024 School Horse of the Year.

He’s a unique fellow, being ½ Morgan and ½ Connemara Pony.

Pumpkin came to us from a lesson program in Kentucky.

They advertised him as a unicorn, and they were correct.

Pumpkin can do anything.

He can maintain his trotting speed for rookie posters and can do a variety of speeds for more advanced trotters.

Pumpkin is the second or third horse riders canter. While his canter is smooth, he’s here to teach riders to keep his head up and his brain engaged.

He’s a fantastic bareback horse, loves to play games, especially ‘steal the crop.’

Pumpkin is happy to travel to academy shows and is a star at Knollwood shows.

Did we mention he is a lunge lesson king?

How to identify Pumpkin in the arena?

He’s super handsome.

He has a beautiful stripe on his broad face.

His speed rarely changes unless he’s asked.

This is Thomas, our 2025 Lesson Horse of the Year

Thomas is an American Saddlebred whose registered name is Fort Chiswell’s Aristocrat.

He’s a god.

Thomas represented the academy superstar party in the election, and they couldn’t have chosen a better candidate.

Thomas is reserved for members of our academy show team and is usually the second academy superstar they enjoy.

Our man of the year is a pattern rock star who has memorized all editions of the UPHA pattern book.

He builds confidence, starts teaching riders about alignment, and instills patience in pattern work.

Thomas is pretty business like in his demeanor and really doesn’t have many quirks.

He does, however, love to pretend that he doesn’t know where he lives. Every day when he comes in, he trots past his stall to the hay storage area, takes a mouthful, reverses, and heads to his stall. Kind of like hitting the salad bar before the entrée arrives?

How to identify Thomas in the arena?

He has a little pep in his step, especially at the trot.

His very Saddlebred face has a big star and a snip dripping off it.

Ears are forward when he’s working.

Thomas spends a lot of time teaching patterns, so look for him doing moves off the rail.

This is Vaughn.

Vaughn was born at the farm on the day that Stevie Ray Vaughn passed away.

He’s official name in the Saddlebred registry is 'He Plays the Blues.'

Vaughn is an unsung hero.

Vaughn is a steady guy who goes with the flow.

He’s a little plain on the outside, with an attempted star on his forehead for a marking.

His trot may not be the smoothest, but his canter more than makes up for it. (Point of reference, only world champion eq rider Brooklyn and super strong academy star Dilly enjoy riding him bareback.)

Vaughn teaches many, many lessons to our cantering riders who don’t show academy.

He’s a pattern guru, and is always ready to share his own interpretations, especially if there’s something shiny, or if someone has moved in the lounge.

Vaughn is not the bravest of chaps, and doesn’t enjoy going to academy shows. He does not embrace new adventures well.

Vaughn loves a good game, even if they are a little confusing.

In his stall, Vaughn loves to nap, and loves to ignore our instructions of ‘Don’t lie down after you’re groomed.’

He also wants to be the first horse out at night, and will lose his patience quickly if he has to stay in for a later lesson. You might label the behavior a temper tantrum?

How to identify Vaughn in the arena:

He’s the brown guy trotting around waiting to hear what to do next.

Vaughn may try to cut corners on the lounge end, and he may try to come off the rail on the school barn rail while going second way in the arena. You’ll enjoy watching your rider learn the ways of a horse’s mind.

We’ll delve into the ‘brown’ horses of the box stalls next time.

The Knollwood banquet was once again a perfect way to spend an evening.

We celebrated the accomplishments of 2025, and got a sneak peek of 2026.

Some of our favorite memories of the evening?

Assigned Tables Were a Hit.

For the first time, we assigned tables for all attendees. Great thanks to Court, Kerry, and Susan for their expertise of creating tables enjoyed by all.

The Venue and Food Were Fabulous.

Our friends at the Legend at Merrill Hills went above and beyond in their event execution. And the food, as usual, was beautiful and delicious.

Speeches

 Who knew a banquet could be so entertaining?

The Knockout officers signed off for 2025, and introduced the new officers and board members for 2026.

Kylie led the crowd through the introduction of Thomas, our new school horse of the year.

Congratulations to Thomas, officially known as Fort Chiswell’s Aristocrat. He’s a gem.

Scott reviewed the show barn accomplishments, and clued us in to some upcoming events in 2026.

Awards

Our booming academy program recognized champions and reserve champions for participation in both in-barn shows and out of barn shows.

All Knockout members who complete two hours of club service during the year are eligible for year end awards. We keep track of points for both types of shows, and award riders who have accumulated the most points.

Competition was fierce, as shown in the number of ties in the total, including three way ties in the walk and trot in-barn pattern for both champion and reserve champion.

By the end of the awards presentation, we had awarded 19 championship titles, and 24 reserve championships.

Our DJ kept the dance floor full, while barn friends hung out together. There was a big age spread on the dance floor, ranging from our five year old leadliners to our Knollwood Kids who drive,

What’s Coming Up?

Orders are underway for Jelly Bean jods through the month of February. These classic Knollwood jods are in navy with tan patches and our embroidered logo, are perfect for our smallest riders. The stretchy fabric and the ability to personalize length at production make these jods a great choice for everyday wear as well as for Knollwood shows.

Trish is Coming

Our favorite tailor, Trish, is coming to the farm on Saturday, February 21 to measure for new academy shirts and vests, and to alter existing clothes for the perfect fit.

OK, now we’ve done it.

We walked through the barn asking people we met a simple question:

'If you were a Knollwood lesson horse, who would be? And why?'

The answers are unexpected, hilarious, and some are even wise.

Here, in alphabetical order are the people we met, and their reflections.

Instructor Ann would be Thomas.

They both like to go to horse shows.

She forgets things, just like Thomas who forgets where his stall is. Daily.

She gets crabby when her belt is tight, just like Mr T and his girth.

Second generation, and 5 year old  Knollwood Kid Ariya was very sure of her answers.

She would be Sparky.

He’s amazing at trotting.

He’s an antique. He’s 92 years old.

He’s a good snuggler.

He shed all over my pants today.

Instructor Brenda would be Bilbo.

He has a sparkle in his eye. (This usually means there’s a joke coming.)

He has awesome yoga moves like Brenda. His best known is downward facing pony.

He loves teaching. His specialties?

  He’ll back up the chute a few feet. Silently.

  He’ll happily reverse continually when a rider’s outside rein is too short.

Instructor and master scheduler Court would be Earl.

He loves to sleep and has good dreams.

 (You can tell when he’s dreaming because he moves his feet, twitches his nose, and whinnies with his eyes closed.)

He has a big happy heart.

He achieves what he needs to be successful, but reserves some energy for things he loves, like eating.

Knollwood Kid for life Jane would be Sparky.

 They both have manes of silver.

They’re both elders but prefer the term ‘vintage.’

They both like to snuggle but are particular about who they snuggle with.

Knockout Co-President Kylie would be Pumpkin

They’re both chill, but are willing to step it up to get stuff done.

They’re both unflappable.

They both love to help young Knollwood Kids become horse people.

Knollwood academy rider and Richie protégé Luke would be Pumpkin.

They’re both cool and confident.

They both enjoy daytime naps.

They’re both friends with everyone.

Instructor and Official Arena Timekeeper Molly would be Sparky.

Sparky has an internal clock set to the 15 minute mark to know when to reverse. So does Molly.

Sparky goes with the flow of lessons and so does Molly except if reverse timing is ignored.

Sparky is ‘older’  and yet young at heart. Molly is the same.

Molly grew up with Sparky and he taught her how to ride.

Instructor Nancy would be Dexter.

She pins her ears when someone comes near her ‘stall’ just like Dexter.

She’s been here forever, too!

She trips a lot, just like retired Dexter.

She gets fat off air just like him

Academy rider, Knollwood Kid and barn personality Olivia would be Leon.

They both like to nap during the day.

They’re both kind, but take no nonsense, unless it’s from their friends. Nonsense from friends is OK.

They don’t need to be flashy to shine.

Finally, third generation Knollwood rider and academy star Sammy would be Bee.

They’re both fast.

They can both be bossy sometimes.

They’re both pretty patient at most times.

Our trusty lesson horses have their own strategy when the weather turns extra chilly.

Lesson horses take extra naps.

If you’ve ever walked through the school barn on a chilly day, you’ll see lots of ‘tails on the ground.’ Sleeping horses will be dead to the world, dreaming of summer days. You’ll see horses so relaxed that their snouts are in the shavings, creating fountains of bedding. If you’re extra quiet, you’ll even hear snoring and maybe even Fred whinnying in his sleep.

Oh, and we think Vaughn may have a sleep disorder. Does anyone have a sleep mask in horse size to save him from his sleep apnea?

Lesson Horses Eat and Sleep In Extra Hay.

Nancy makes sure the horses have all the hay they can eat outside. The hay keeps the horses warm and safe in the chilly weather.

You may never see Bee and Fiona’s heads come up from their hay tubs when the chilly weather arrives.

Lesson Horses Enjoy Hot Breakfast.

 That’s right, when it’s extra chilly, the lesson stars enjoy a hot bran mash to keep their bodies happy.

Watching and listening to them slurp their hot steaming breakfast is a highlight of your life once you hear it.

Lesson Horses Wear Stylish Clothes.

Our lesson horses have coats for when the temps fall below zero at night.

Some of their blankets have turtlenecks, some are in loud colors, and some are tastefully neutral colored, but they all keep our precious lesson horses toasty warm.

Attendance Increases at Bilbo’s Yoga Classes.

Chilly weather brings stiff bodies. Bilbo invites all his fellow lesson horses, regardless of body type, to join in stretching and spiritual growth.

While they’re in, the lesson horses enjoy their heated barn and lots of shavings, lots of attention from students and staff, and lessons in their heated arena.

We are grateful for our furnaces.

We take care of the horses in cold weather, and we want to make sure riders and helpers take care of themselves.

Riders should have gloves for their riding lessons, and warmer gloves for work in the barn.

Helpers should have hats for outdoor work, and dress in layers. You’ll want all the layers outside, but will get warm while working inside with the horses.

We appreciate our helpers, and want to make sure they stay safe and comfortable when the cold weather appears.

160 Knockouts and  friends will gather for our annual celebration of all things Knollwood.

We’ll enjoy wonderful food and company, review 2025 with treasurer Susan, hear Scott’s State of the Farm address, award academy riders, learn who won the School Horse of the Year award, review the year with a slide show, and dance the night away with our DJ.

Please remember to follow the club’s dress code: No denim of any kind, and men must wear shirts with collars.

2025 By the Numbers

Not a math person? 

We promise it will be fun.

So we’ve just finished up recapping our action packed 2025, and we came across some informative numbers.

In 2025, Team Knollwood taught over 12000 lessons at home.

How did we do that?

First off, we have an amazing staff of instructors.

Our full and part time instructors come from varied backgrounds. We have former classroom teachers, a professional in autism intervention, a pediatric nurse, a professional marketer and fundraiser, and 2 former corporate executives.

We’re a team with many, many experiences on which to draw, and we work together to personalize rider’s plans to make them successful.

We teach  because we love the process, and the kids we work with.

Secondly, we have fantastic horses as our fellow faculty members.

We actually have three sets of lesson horses.

Our fantastic ‘outside’ horses teach our beginner riders, our summer riding school students, and do roughly 2/3 of lessons.

These are the unicorns among us who offer unlimited patience, kindness, and the perfect jog trot to make a beginner’s first lessons full of fun and confidence building. They may not be the most beautiful on the outside, and none of them are youngsters, but they’re beautiful on the inside, and are priceless.

Our second group of horses are referred to as ‘the box stall boys.’

These are saddlebreds who travel with us to academy shows.

They’re reserved for our academy show riders, and for show barn riders. They’re more powerful, more highly educated in patterns, and LOVE traveling to horse shows.

They’re also pampered a bit more than the outside fellows. The box stall boys stay in at night, and go out during the day when the weather is nice.

They wear sheets and blankets to protect their coats, and many of them have their tails braided up to protect them during play dates outside. They come down at horse shows and look fabulous.

Our third set of horses are those who work for the show barn instructors. These are higher level teachers, and many of them double as show horses at smaller shows.

They teach the highest skills to our most advanced academy riders and show barn riders. If you see them in the arena, you may well mistake them for privately owned show horses.

The third ingredient to the lesson number is our admins, barn managers, and helpers.

Our admins keep parents informed about upcoming events, help kids sign up for shows, Knockout events, and merchandise sales.

They can answer questions, check fit on clothes, and explain almost anything.

Our barn managers keep the back of the barn organized while lessons are going on. They assign tasks to helpers so horses and riders are on time for lessons and are taken care of after lessons.

Barn managers know riders’ names on their work day, make riders feel welcome, and follow through with helpers to ensure riders are taken care of and that chores are completed.

These horse girls are going to rule the world one day.

Our helpers are an early point of contact, and are super important.

They prep horses for lessons, take young riders to the arena and bring them back safely, perform glamorous tasks that all horse girls do, such as dumping muck buckets and taking out garbage in all kinds of weather.

They do this while being kind, welcoming, and answering lots of questions.

The most important key to teaching that many lessons is that we really love what we do. We’re grateful for working with supportive families, interested riders, and the best lesson horses in the world. Hands down.

We have lots of events and experiences coming up in the new year. We hope you can join us for all of our 2026 adventures.

Your first chance to purchase your show outfit for 2026 is coming up this Friday when Jen from Midwest Saddleseat Consignment sets up shop. Knollwood has a private shopping night from 7-9 PM at the Hilton Garden Inn at Pabst Farms.

Jen has a broad assortment of show attire, including academy show jods from several lines. Plus, customer service is the best.

Carol and Ann will be there to help with selection and fit.

Banquet reservations are due this Saturday, January 10.

Please place your RSVP card and payment in the basket on the counter of the school barn.  You really don’t want to miss the celebration!

Melissa and Amy, two ‘Knollwood Moms for Life,’ are hosting a parent meeting on Saturday, January 17 at 10:00 AM.

Our youth group, the Knollwood Knockouts, is a very busy group of horse-loving kids. The group manages fundraising at three Knollwood shows, manages a food drive in May, hosts 2 street cleanups in the neighborhood, 2 Parent Nights Out,  hosts their annual holiday party and officer election, and also hosts fun events for the members.

As you can imagine, these kids need some adult guidance for hosting their events. We’re looking for parents willing to volunteer their time for an event or two throughout the year. It can range from taking shifts at the concession stand to picking up pizzas for Parents’ Night Out.

Please join the meeting if you can. If you’re interested in helping but can’t make the meeting, please contact Ann and she’ll pass on your contact info.

Since most Knollwood Kids are off school on January 19 to commemorate Martin Luther King Day, the Knockout officers and board members are hosting a helper training day in the barn.

Current helpers and riders who are interested in helping are invited to a 3 hour session to learn how the back of the barn works.

The event will run from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, and the cost is only $25. Please sign up with your instructor or admin.

The Knollwood Banquet!

We’re celebrating all things Knollwood on Saturday, January 31 at the Legend at Merrill Hills.

New this year, we’ll have assigned seating to make everyone’s lives easier. When you arrive, you can pick up your name tag which will have your table assignment. Big thanks to Court and Kerry for taking this on!

Team Knollwood is hosting a used academy clothing sale on Saturday, February 7 at 10:00 AM in the show barn lounge. We’ll have a selection of show jods, shirts, and vests that our current show riders have outgrown. Jodi will also have her beautiful ties and show accessories to complete your outfit.

We’re also looking for sale items. If you have academy show clothes that you’ve outgrown, please consider running them through our sale.

You can bring them to the school barn where we have tags to mark your clothes with your name, contact info, Venmo info, price, and approximate size.

We’ll take care of the rest.

Our fabulous tailor Trish will be at the farm on Saturday, February 21 to measure for new academy show clothes, or to alter previously purchased items. We’ll start setting up appointments at the beginning of February.

We’ll start taking entries for the Knollwood spring show on March 6. Our first in-barn show of the season  is coming up May 15-17, and we can hardly wait.

Our academy kick-off evening is coming up on March 14 at 6:00 PM. All families involved in the academy show team are invited to attend our evening of education and fun.

Karina will be onhand to teach makeup and hair for the ring. We’ll also have experts on hand to teach packing, final tips on clothing, and how to tie the perfect tie for the ring.

Signups will start at the end of February.

We’re traveling to our first out of barn show for 2026 on April 11-12. The season starts at one of our favorite venues, Beyond Stable Farm, and is run by our favorite organization, IASPHA.

We’ll be traveling with many academy stars, even some who are making their academy debuts, and some show horses, too.

The Knollwood Spring Show is coming up at home on May 15-17.

Here at World Headquarters, Team Knollwood is ready to look back fondly on 2025, the year that was.

Hard Work Paid Off

We applaud the hard work that went in to achieve show ring successes, and even greatness during the year.  Not all the big achievements were rewarded with primary colored ribbons, but were rewarded with satisfaction of goals achieved, lessons learned, and progress made for both riders and their horses.

Beginnings

We appreciate all the beginnings by Team Knollwood in 2025. Our two walk-trot equitation riders, Averie and Maddie, made their debuts in the show horse world, Leighton moved up from walk and trot into the 13 and under equitation world, and Brooklyn moved into the immensely competitive world of senior equitation.

Senior Equitation Excellence

Maiya, Natalie, Richie, Shaye, and Sophie enjoyed successful years in the senior equitation arena. 

This incredibly talented group of riders made their mark on the equitation world this year. They made patterns look easy and railwork so smooth that you'd think anyone could hop on their horses and ride.

In a superbly deep year of senior equitation, the Knollwood Kids were always in the mix for the top ribbons.

Grownups Have More Fun

Our adults may have had more fun than the junior exhibitors.  You could see the experienced Knollwood Kid posse having a grand time at shows. Jane, Julie, Kerry, Margit, Tancy, and Tatum cheer on everyone, and show their horses successfully in the always deep adult division.

They know how to have fun.

What A Finish 

While two of our super successful riders aged out on top at  the Royal, we know that Natalie and Richie won’t be strangers to the horse show world.

Our academy team achieved wonderful progress this season as well. From our maiden riders to our champs at Monarch, we couldn’t be more proud.

It's About Sportsmanship

Of course, ribbons are but one part of the horse showing life.

This season showcased sportsmanship by many riders. Richie struggled with Tyler’s soundness issues, while Lady became ill after Madison.

Our academy riders have started a new tradition of slapping hands of the winner of their pattern classes, regardless of barn affiliation, and it’s catching on.

Horse Friendships Last 

Horse friends are for life.

These ladies showed together as junior exhibitors, and are still involved in the horse world.

We value these friendships in good times and in tough ones.

The past is just that.

We’re looking forward to great things in 2026.

Newest Adult Amateurs

Natalie and Richie may have aged out at the Royal, but once you’re a Knollwood Kid, you’re always a Knollwood Kid.

Natalie is finishing her Knollwood internship this summer and will be off to college. Richie continues to study at Butler University, and makes trips home when he can.

Doc is ready and waiting for his next adventure with his favorite gentleman.

Izzy’s Therapy Business Continues Into 2026

Izzy loves all her people and is always eager to help anyone who could use a dog in their lap. If your lap isn’t available, Izzy will stand next to you and lean in. Aggressively.

Izzy is our daily reminder that her mentor Hazel Belle Boxer Matton, who has a brick on the Saddlebred Walk of Fame in Lexington, was a great teacher, and is always with us.

Life Lessons Continue

Horses are the best at teaching us lessons we didn’t know we needed. Although, on occasion, they WILL state the obvious.

Whether it’s a tiny tot rider on Sparky, an academy rider on Sport, an equitation superstar on their own horse, or Scott working one of his mares, a lesson will be taught.

We’re fortunate to have our wonderful lesson horses who teach patience, strength, gentleness, consistency, and persistence on a daily basis.

Richmond and Molly’s Love Story Goes On

Instructor Molly is Richmond’s favorite person. They enjoy long conversations that no one else can understand, and Richmond spends many an hour on Molly’s shoulders while she makes phone calls and catches up on scheduling.

Payton is Coming Back

Many of you will remember Knollwood Kid Payton Duerr, who was an equitation star, even finishing as the Reserve Grand Champion of Champions of Senior Equitation in 2024.

She’s spent some time working at Glendale Stables in Missouri, and is returning to Knollwood as an Assistant Trainer.

We're thrilled to welcome Payton to our staff. She brings her own unique perspective from her equitation successes.

It’s time to set the record straight.

It  has come to our attention that the term ‘horse girl’ is considered an insult in some circles. Anyone who’s spent any time at Knollwood knows that we are proud to raise horse girls. Not all who ride are horse girls, and that’s fine. The few who make the cut learn focus, connection, problem solving, patience, and kindness  that will serve them well in the future.

BIG NOTE: Knollwood is fortunate to have some amazing honorary horse girls who happen to be horsemen. For the blog, we'd love to treat Richie and Luke as honorary horse girls, which we consider high praise indeed.

Their mantra?  ‘Horses first, the rest later.’

Horse Girls are Present.

You can identify a horse girl by the lack of a phone in their hand, or worse yet, in their face.

This rare species is paying attention to the horses and riders around them. They may be taking care of a horse, often while talking to another horse girl grooming a horse. They may be in the arena watching and listening to lessons or watching Scott and Carol work horses.

Horse Girls are Welcoming.

You won’t find horse girls in a closed circle with their backs to others. You’ll find them welcoming new riders, especially the young ones. These riders will talk horses with anyone, at any time.

Horse Girls are Confident.

These Knollwood Kids know what it’s like to manage big horses and love it. They can prevent Bilbo from dragging a small child to food, and can keep Sherman from coming to the middle to see his friends.  They’re the ones who can ride Vaughn past the lounge windows even when the holiday lights are on. IYKYK.

Their confidence doesn’t scream, it’s just evident in the way they interact with horses, and people. Calm as cucumbers.

Horse Girls Don’t Compare.

These kids are thrilled to improve their riding skills and to learn from new horses, but they don’t brag about it or compare themselves to others. They understand that riding is challenging every day, and that everyone is on their own schedule and path.

Congratulate others? Absolutely.

Compare others? Never.

Horse Girls are Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable.

Knollwood Kids live in Wisconsin, so they will be cold in the winter, and hot in the summer.

They will endure tired muscles, and tired brains.

They will experiences rides of frustration, and difficulty.

Voices will be raised, as will expectations.

There will also be the triumph of finally ‘getting it,’  and becoming a true teammate with your horse.

Horse Girls Cannot Get Enough Horse Time.

You’ll find them connecting with horses in ways you never even dreamed of.

They have long conversations with horses while grooming.

They offer spa treatments to our retiree horses.

They provide blow dry appointments to our bay mares after lessons.

Horse Girls Avoid Drama Like the Plague.

They have perfected the ‘pivot on the heel,’ meaning that when they come upon people talking about others, the turn and go the other way.

Horses are challenging, so why waste time with idle, unkind chatter when there are horses to take care of?

Horse Girls Can Make Anything Fun

Whether it's looking for a lost shoe or halter or shoe in the pasture, searching for a fly boot, or dusting ceiling fans, horse girls know that it can be fun if you want it to be.

Horse Girls Represent.

You’ve seen it at shows.

 They cheer the small wins, and the big ones.

Cheering for everyone, regardless of barn affiliation.

Horse girls are universal.

We’re proud to raise some of the best horse girls in the land.

Gifts of experience leave lasting memories, and we have some wonderful ideas of how to share time with horses for riders of all levels of interest and experience.

Mini Camps

Knollwood Kids start their education with a Sunday afternoon  mini camp.

Taught by amazing instructor Molly, our newest riders learn safety around horses, how to groom and saddle their horse, and how to mount, dismount, and hold their reins.

All that is even before their riding lesson!

The last 30 minutes of the camp is spent in the heated indoor arena, learning some riding basics with the horse they’ve been working with.

Each rider even has a personal assistant, an experienced rider, with them from start to finish.

Best of all, these mini camps are only $99.

Camps for riders aged 7 and up run from noon – 3:00 PM.

Welcome to Knollwood 

If riders love their mini camp and would like to continue their education, the next step is our small group program that we call Welcome to Knollwood.

We offer this step on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 throughout the year, although we take a break in the summer.

Riders start this program with a personal assistant in the arena, and become independent as the weeks go by.

Emphasis is on riding skills, and the progress is visible from week to week.

Cost for this session is $375.

Knollwood Parent Welcome to Knollwood

Knollwood Moms are taking over their own Welcome to Knollwood!

We started the Knollwood Kid and parent class a little while ago, and it’s become a weekly funfest. Your Knollwood can even serve as your personal assistant if they’re old enough.

We’re continuing the group on Mondays at 7:30, and any Knollwood parent is welcome to sign up for the 8 week session.

Some poor soul took a trip around the barn and asked the lesson horses what they’d like for presents, and we got some really eye-opening answers.

Here in no particular order are the wishes of the best lesson horses in the world.

Bee, our Hackney Pony who currently looks like a wooly mammoth, would like salon time to make her very long hair under control She does, however, really enjoy her nightly blow dry sessions at home.

Bilbo is our resident yogi, at least when the goal is food instead of enlightenment. He’s in need of a BIG yoga mat. He’s worn his old one out while digging under his feed bin. He has not found enlightenment there. Obviously.

Speaking of supersized gifts, Earl would like a BIG pillow for use during his daily naps.

Fiona is dreaming of teaching more students their patterns. She SO enjoys those lessons with circles as she sashays through various shapes until riders find their outside leg.

Being a true Wisconsinite, Fred would like accordion lessons. He fell in love with the music while swaying to Brenda’s holiday stylings, the annual highlight of the Tuesday night holiday celebration. Fred sways while listening to accordion tunes, but he’ll have to stay still while learning. Can he do it?

Hugo is hoping for an all expense paid trip to Egypt. He identifies with camels, a fact you’ll know if you’ve watched him walk for very long.

Leon says he doesn’t need anything and just wants everyone to be happy.

Leona would like a high stall partition so her neighbor Murphy will stop bothering her.

Murphy would like the partition removed.

Poppy would like a metronome for her stall so she can even sleep to the rhythm of her perfect tiny tot trot.

Pumpkin wants peace on earth.

Sherman would like a wider stall to make napping more comfortable.

Thomas would like a subscription to a relaxation app.  Would anyone like to share their ‘Calm’ app with him?

Vaughn would like an imaginary friend to keep him company after other horses have gone out for the night.

Baxter, king of the corner office with two windows, would like a monthly window cleaning service.

Beau would like more tiny riders.

Oscar really wants a portrait of himself in his stall. He needs someone beautiful to admire.

Sport is hoping for a monthly delivery of Taffy Town’s flavor of the month.

The campaigning and the debates are over.

While you were enjoying a quiet Thanksgiving at home, primary ballots were being counted in the school barn pasture.

We’re happy to announce the four horses who were victorious in the primary elections and will run for School Horse of the Year 2026.

Here, in alphabetical order, are the candidates.

Representing The Pony Party, we have Bilbo.  This fuzzy Hafflinger stands up for fun sized people and horses everywhere. (Although, Bee is not endorsing him at the moment.)

Bilbo believes that small is strong, and that rules frequently don’t apply to him. In particular, Bilbo feels he should be able to urinate at any time in any location, including the arena.

Voting for Bilbo is a vote for adventures, a little bit of passive aggressiveness, lots of humor,  yoga sessions that are rewarded with food, and self-confidence. He did nominate himself, after all.

Representing The Sleeper Party, we have candidate Earl. Our giant gray quarter horse stands (or lays down) for quiet days in the barn with lights out, maybe some soothing music, relaxing between lessons with or without tack on, and pillows for everyone.

Earl is representing the biggest party on the farm, and is nominated by his next-door neighbor Sherman. Sherman is frequently so well rested when he comes in from outside that he goes to Earl’s stall instead of his own.

Other notable members of the Sleeper Party include Vaughn, Pumpkin, and Hugo.

A vote for Earl is a vote for lower wattage bulbs, meditation, and pillows. Big pillows.

Representing the Girl Power Party, we have Fiona. This beautiful bay half Arabian and half Morgan is a true feminist. She believes that riding mares makes for strong, creative thinking riders who understand that things are rarely what you think they are.

Fiona was nominated by fellow party member Poppy, purely for her intimidation factor. The geldings all fear Poppy because of her fence destruction skills, and for the stories she tells to neighbor Vaughn. Did you ever wonder why Vaughn is always in such a hurry to go outside?

A vote for Fiona is a vote for creative teaching of patterns, learning how to make the people and horses in your life believe that what you’re asking them to do was actually their idea, and for looking into her beautiful brown eyes and seeing the wheels spinning.

Our final nominee, Thomas, represents the Academy Award Party.  This registered Saddlebred known in the registry as Fort Chiswell’s Aristocrat, is a legend in the academy world.

Thomas was nominated by fellow party member Leon, who is also a unicorn. (Extra points there)

Thomas is a pattern genius, a confidence booster to our newest academy show riders, and has just enough tricks to make more experienced think twice about that right lead.

A vote for Thomas is a vote for promoting academy showing, for learning that patience is a virtue, and that even the nicest people and horses can have crabby days. Thomas says, ‘Just deal with it.’

All Knockouts are invited to pay their 2026 dues in the school barn lounge. You’ll receive a ballot when you pay for the upcoming year.

Please place your competed ballot in the dues envelope and place it in the ballot box provided.

DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THE YELLOW CAT!

Even if he says he’s running a write-in campaign, or is conducting an exit poll, do not make eye contact.

Tie Downs, AKA Underpasses

You can NEVER have enough tie downs.

They tend to break in the warm up ring, or right before your lesson, so don’t leave home without them.

All riders are required to have tie downs on their jods for every lesson to keep their  pants from riding up.

Tie downs come in button model, for jods with buttons near the hem, and a clip on version for riding pants without buttons.

Gloves

Riding gloves are a part of our clothing requirements, and good warm make chilly riding weather a little more comfortable. We recommend these.

Saddle Horse Report

Do you have a horse show junkie in your house? How about getting a subscription to Saddle Horse Report? School Horse of the Year Election

Hard fought primaries have been completed, and the 4 finalists will be announced on Monday, December 1.

Voting is simple. Just join or renew your Knockout membership during December, and you’ll receive a ballot. Place your completed ballot in the box, and wait for the results to be announced at the banquet on January 31.

Team Knollwood enjoyed a rewarding week of competition at the UPHA National Championship American Royal Horse Show last week.

Trainers, riders, and caretakers have been working hard all season to finish strong at the last show of the 2025 season. They were rewarded well for their efforts.

Maddie and Averie showed at the Royal for the first time, competing in the walk trot division.  They both showed in the UPHA Walk and trot Challenge Cup for Riders 10 and under, and the class was ginormous.

Both riders turned in strong rides, and Maddie showed Zach to a Top 10 finish.

Averie showed again after the final and finished second in her 2026 qualifier.

Leighton and Prince have had a highly successful first season in the 13 and under walk trot and canter world.

At the Royal, this personality plus team finished in the top 10 of their first ever walk, trot, and canter national final.

In addition, Leighton won the Sportsmanship Award voted on by her fellow Challenge Cup competitors.

Congratulations, Leighton and Prince.

Shaye and Lady are making a name for themselves. In Lady’s first year as an equitation horse, she and Shaye made the first cut in the most prestigious final of them all, the USEF Medal.

They have made amazing progress in a short amount of time. Just imagine how wise Lady will be after a Knollwood off season!

Maiya and Riddle were contenders all week. Rescue Riddle and Maiya are a seasoned team, and it showed at the Royal.

The rescue horse turned equitation superstar and his skilled rider finished in the Top 10 of both the UPHA Senior Challenge Cup Final, and the Medal Final.

Brooklyn and Gigi are in their first season together, and they have learned to appreciate and understand each other.

Firey Gigi and calm Brooklyn were the youngest team to make the top 10 in a final this year, and they made both the Challenge Cup and Medal final cut.

Just imagine how much closer they’ll become after an off season at home.

Natalie and Garfield closed out their junior exhibitor career at the Royal. These two have become a force to be reckoned with, usually finishing at the top of the ribbons.

Keep in mind that Garfield notices everything, and Natalie rides him superbly,  Her calmness is the perfect match for beautiful Garfield’s sense of awareness.

At her last equitation show as a ‘kid,’ Natalie finished in the Top 10 of the UPHA Senior Challenge Cup final.

Richie  

To say that Richie has had a storied equitation career is an understatement.

From his first ever championship at Cedarburg on Klem to the Royal this week, he’s been a true horseman and gentleman.

Richie loves his horses, and it shows.

At his final equitation show as a junior exhibitor, Richie won the UPHA Senior Challenge Cup National Final on his athletic horse Doc. They won it unanimously.

Richie just about brought the roof down on his victory pass.

To finish off the week, Richie finished 4^th in the USEF Medal Final.

Congratulations to all the Knollwood Kids who turned in strong performances in the finals!

World Cup Trials

November 21-22

William Woods University

Knollwood Kids Addison, Natalie, Richie, and Shaye have been selected to try out for the US Saddleseat team to compete at the World Cup this summer.

They’ll draw two horses each to ride in both railwork and patterns. Their horsemanship will be tested by riding two unknown horses with the luck of the draw being a big part of the process.

Shaye is trying out for the three gaited team, while Addison, Natalie, and Richie are aiming for the 5 gaited side.

Best of luck to them this weekend.

Hello Everyone, Fred here.

I’ve been doing some serious listening in the barn and in the pasture to listen to the conversations about the upcoming school horse election. Heck, I've even employed Sparky as a spy to listen to the girls. He hangs out with them some nights, and gathers lots of information.

In case you didn’t know, the Knockouts, those glorious kids who give us mints and hugs and spa treatments hold a yearly election. They all vote for their favorite school horse of the year when they pay their annual dues.

Because there are so many of us beauts, we hold primary elections each November before the polls open in December.

Caucusing has begun, coalitions are forming, and there’s lots of talking in the pasture and in the barn.

Because I’m the reigning school horse of the year, I cannot win again. You know, you can only be Miss America once or win an equitation final once. I have won neither yet, so I have goals to reach for.

My friends and former winners Baxter, Sparky, and Pumpkin have contributed to this article.

There appear to be four distinct groups at the moment.

The Girly Group

Composed of Bee, Leona, Fiona, and Poppy, these four mares believe that they should rule the barn.

They’re in favor of strong women like the ones who work at Knollwood, enjoy teaching their riders to stand up for themselves, and keeping everyone guessing.

They’ve elected Poppy as their leader for sheer intimidation power in negotiations. Have you seen what she can do to a fence? The grand geldings say, ‘Yes, ma’am.’

The Academy Horses

A relatively small group, Thomas and Leon miss a lot of nights in the pasture because of their travel schedule. Of course, while on the road, these two enjoy nights in, big boy box stalls, unlimited naps on comfy shavings, and pampering galore.

In addition to the extra care, they get to show and take care of their riders away from home. They meet fellow teachers from other lesson programs and learn the latest news from them. It’s networking at its finest.

They’re in favor of longer trips, more spa treatments, and a little more respect from the beginner horses.

The Sleepers

By far the largest group of nominators, the sleepers are a force to be reckoned with. They may be quiet, except for Vaughn who snores like a freight train, but their numbers carry a lot of power.

They are consistent violators of school horse lesson number 1: Horses are not to nap lying down after they have been groomed.

Heck, some of them even hit the shavings with their saddles on.

The silent majority are in favor of more shavings, more ‘lights out’ time, and pillows for all.

The Box Stall Boys

Former winner and corner office owner Baxter is the spokesperson for this interesting group. Murphy, Oscar, and Sport are bargaining for cool matching jackets with their names embroidered, just like the academy kids. They’d also like their own Freedman backpacks to carry their essential show items.

No one really listens to them, but everyone humors them.

These groupings are changing frequently, depending on the day. The final primary elections will be held during Thanksgiving week, and the official ballot will be released shortly thereafter.

Voting for the final four candidates will begin on December 1, and will the polls will close on December 31.

Whether you’re joining for the first time, or renewing your membership, you’ll receive a ballot when you pay your 2026 dues. Please put your envelope with dues and completed ballot in the ballot box provided.

Please don’t be shocked if Richmond pretends to be an exit poller. He’s just out for extra food and attention. You do not have to tell him who you voted for. He’s a scamming yellow cat.

Election results will be announced at the banquet on January 31.

In the horse world, people wear many hats.  Team Knollwood is no different.

We’d like to introduce you to some of the additional tasks the school barn staff have added to their teaching activities.

Nancy is a Knollwood institution.

She teaches lessons on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

In addition to teaching, her other areas of expertise include maintaining the health of the school horses, including working with Matt our vet, scheduling farrier visits, and keeping daily watch over them.

She also helps Matt with the show barn and uses her vet skills in taking care of sick horses at the farm.

Nancy also manages delivery of feed for all the barns here at Knollwood. She works closely with Merton Feed to ensure that show feed is delivered to the show barn with perfect timing for travel plans, and makes sure our horses are always well fed.

She also works with local hay farms to keep the lofts full of delicious hay. She knows many many things about hay crops and can make sure horses get the right stuff.

Nancy keeps the farm landscape looking great, keeping tabs on the lawns, the plant beds, and seasonal decorations.

When the show barn is on the road, Nancy lends a hand working horses.

Ann teaches lessons on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

In addition to teaching weekly lessons, the former retail executive oversees the lesson program.

She develops staff instructors with meetings and riding sessions to help us all teach the same skills the same way.

She brings new Knollwood Kids into the academy program and helps them improve their riding skills. She also teaches four weeks of academy camps each summer to teach the academy riders new skills and to develop friendships at the barn.

With the help of amazing parents and our team of instructors, Ann manages the three annual in-barn shows. She assigns horses, splits classes into evenly matched sets of riders, and arranges the schedule based on current entries.

Ann creates Knollwood’s social media presence with the help of enthusiastic Knollwood Kids who are always up for photo time.

Courtney teaches lessons on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

This former elementary ed teacher and UPHA Challenge Cup National Champion brings a wealth of different experience to our teaching team.

In addition to her teaching days, Courtney is also in charge of scheduling our always moving lesson schedule. She schedules new riders into enrolled private lesson spots after they complete Welcome to Knollwood.

Courtney also assists Carol with instructing some of our advanced academy riders and some show barn riders.

Courtney is in charge of Woodwear, and creates merchandise assortments for each season. She also sources awards for our in-barn shows and high point awards.

She also oversees our summer camp program and has created a dynamic handbook for our camp instructors.

Courtney’s organizational skills are a godsend to her fellow instructors.

Brenda teaches on Mondays and Tuesdays, the busiest teaching days of the week.

In addition to teaching, Brenda is the master of helper scheduling. She schedules weekly helpers during the school year, summer riding school, and our monthly mini camps.

Also a former elementary ed teacher, Brenda works closely with parents to figure out schedules, school loads, and what works best for each helper.

Molly teaches lessons on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays.

In addition to teaching her regularly scheduled lessons, Molly is also our mini camp instructor.

When not at Knollwood, Molly works with autistic kids. She brings her patience, positivity, and enthusiasm to her riding instruction. Her mini camps are a ball, and many of the riders enroll in our lesson program after a few hours with Molly.

Our Admin Team

They're just amazing.

Jane, Marnia, Michelle, Michelle, Pam, and Wendy are there to welcome to you, to answer questions, to help relay messages, and to answer many, many questions. Richmond also helps.

They also have many different life experiences from administration, education, to working in the health care industry.

They're all Knollwood Moms in one way or another, and can help you with just about everything.

If they can't answer a question, they sure know who can.

Enrollment Meetings

From now until December 10

All families currently enrolled in our lesson program meet with their instructor to discuss their enrollment plans for 2026.

Academy riders will have sitdown meetings while we plan camps and shows, and these meetings are available to anyone who’d like to talk.

Staff instructors will meet with their families before or after a lesson.

All paperwork is due on December 15.

Adopt a Family

From now until November 27, you can support a local family in need. We’ve adopted a family of three children headed by a single mom who’s battling cancer.

Wish lists will go up on Thursday. Please sign up to donate items to make their holidays a little brighter.

While adults aren’t usually included in the wish lists, the agency added some gifts for the mom for this family.

Knockouts will gather on November 29 to wrap the gifts.

The UPHA American Royal National Championship Horse Show

November 10-15

Kansas City, Missouri

The show horses are leaving shortly, and the performances start on Monday.

Team Knollwood will be there competing against the best horses and riders in the last of the 2025 equitation finals.

 After a successful first year showing out of the academy division, Maddie and Averie are showing in the UPHA Challenge Cup final for walk trot riders.

Later in the show, Maddie will show in the 10 and under WTC equitation class to prepare for next year.

Leighton and Teddy are riding in the UPHA Challenge Cup Final for riders 13 and under. This team has been working hard all season and has enjoyed lots of success.

Richie, Maiya, Brooklyn, Natalie, and Shaye will be showing in the UPHA Challenge Cup for riders aged 14-17. 21 of the best riders in the country are currently entered in the event which features multiple phases.

These five Knollwood Kids will also be competing in the USEF Medal Final, possibly the most prestigious of them all.

The Royal is going to be fantastic competition, and you can purchase the live feed here.

We’ll update with results regularly as well.

Academy Demo Night

Our academy team just returned from our final show of the 2025 season. We had riders from all levels of our academy team in competition. Three of our most advanced academy riders who ride with Scott and Carol rode in the most advanced classes while we had academy riders in the traditional academy classes, and we even had six riders who were finishing their first academy show season in the green division, which is just for riders competing in their first calendar year.

 All 20 of our competitors rode to the best of their ability and education level, and we couldn’t be prouder of them. We had ups and downs, learned a lot, and found time to laugh as well.

As a competition-based lesson program, you’ll often hear us talk about how much we love academy showing.  Here’s your chance to hear a few reasons why we think it’s an amazing opportunity for any rider who can participate.

Showing Builds Confidence

Riders learn their lessons at home riding in the same arenas and in pretty much the same situations, with the same horses and riders around.

Show riders travel to different arenas which are sometimes indoor, and sometimes outdoor. Fellow competitors are different at each show, arenas can be huge, sound systems can be different, and these variables mean that horses may react differently. These differences require a rider to retain their focus on their horse and situation throughout their classes. Confidence is built through experience in different situations. We call it ‘broadening the base.’

Showing Promotes Goal Setting

Before we attend a show, each rider works with their instructor to determine goals for the competition. These are personal goals that reflect an individual rider’s present riding status.

Goals may be as simple as getting correct diagonals, may involve a position correction they’re working on, or a skill involving the particular horse they’re showing.

Goals NEVER involve placings or ribbons, as those are in the hands of the judge that we’re asking to place riders.

There’s nothing better than a rider achieving their personal goals. Then, we can move on to another goal!

Showing Requires Responsibility

Riders are responsible for having their show clothing and equipment packed and ready to go. We provide a laminated checklist so riders can mark their items as they’re packed and keep track of what they may need to refill before their next competition.

Riders must be at the show in time to prep and walk patterns.

Showing Encourages Gratitude

Not everyone is fortunate enough to fall in love with horses, or to have the opportunity to be involved with them. Riding horses, showing horses, spending time with horses, making horse friends, and getting to be a part of the Knollwood community are things to be grateful for.

Showing Horses Advances Resilience

Not all rides are going to be brilliant, and our goal is to learn and improve skills. You won’t learn if you don’t fall short sometimes.

Resilience means that you’re OK with learning from mistakes, take the error and learn from it for the future.

Resilience means that you’re OK with ribbons that reflect the ride you had, not the ride you dreamed you’d have.

Showing Horses Furthers Sportsmanship

Team Knollwood is known for exhibiting good sportsmanship, and we model that history.

We always thank our horse.

We ask for a judge’s opinion and accept it.

We clap for everyone, and congratulate everyone, regardless of placings.

When friends have a tough ride, we support them.

What we don’t do?

We don’t pout, complain, or make faces.

We don’t talk about others and we walk away if people choose to.

We NEVER blame our horse for anything.

Showing Horses Teaches Teamwork

We travel with many horses and riders, so we all help each other.

Riders frequently lend accessories, and sometimes even pants when zippers go out.

Show techs work very hard to make sure horses look their best, and riders frequently help them with tack changes and other tasks.

Instructors and techs help other barns with changes when they find themselves shorthanded.

If someone needs help, we lend a hand.

Showing Creates and Builds Friendships

Best of all, Academy showing gives us time with barn friends and the best lesson horses in the world.  Riders spend hotel nights in pools, evenings watching show horses, and hours getting ready at the show.

The laughter is contagious.

Plus, Knollwood Kids get to meet horse kids from other barns and develop friendships with other riders.

Team Knollwood celebrated our lesson program last weekend at home, and the show horses competed in a deep show that featured the first of the 'Big Three' equitation finals in Springfield, Illinois. What a time we had in two states.

Our Friday night performance featured 56 riders performing individual patterns in the arena.  It takes a bit of bravery to enter an arena by yourself to perform a pattern with your horse. We couldn’t be more proud of our riders who chose to participate in the Friday night performance.

For the number junkie readers, that represents 65% of riders showing over the weekend.

Why do we teach patterns so early in a rider’s education? Riding patterns teaches how horses move while turning, patterns teach patience as the rider’s message works its way from the horses mind to its body, pattern teach communication skills as the rider learns how to use multiple channels into the horse’s brain.

Patterns also teach resilience, because patterns aren’t about perfection, but about progress.  One circle might be too big, one might be too small, a line won’t be perfectly straight, and a halt won’t be in the perfect place.

If the pattern was better than the last time you tried, and you can apply what you learned to different situations, it was a success.

Bravo to everyone who joined us for pattern competition.

Saturday showcased our walk, trot, and canter riders as well as our walk and trot riders aged 11 and over.

We started the day with 6 six splits of 11-17 walk trot and canter competition. Each group competed in a horsemanship class, an equitation qualifier, and an equitation championship featuring workouts.

Our favorite split of the day? The group that featured our real ‘lesson’ horses, not the academy horses. We were fortunate to see big quarter horses like Sherman and Earl compete against Bee the Hackney, Pumpkin the glorious half Morgan and half Connemara, and Hugo, Leon, and Leona, three non-fancy yet priceless Saddlebreds.

Teagan rode Bee to the Horsemanship win and the equitation championship, while Molly rode Sherman to the equitation qualifier win.

Our 10 and under walk trot and canter class is always a treat to watch. Our four up and coming riders competed as fiercely as the older competitors.

Olivia and Bee won the horsemanship class while Rags and Baxter topped the equitation classes. The future is quite bright.

Our walk trot division for riders 11 and over was 9 riders strong. The classes were evenly matched, and full of hard riding competitors. Look for these riders to make the move to walk trot, and canter next season.

We finished our day with the finals of the Knollwood Challenge for 2025.

Riders have competed in qualifiers throughout the season, and the finals featured some terrific riding both on the rail and in the patterns the riders received Friday night.

In the walk trot division, Olivia rode Thomas to the championship, winning the traveling trophy and a custom show shirt. Finleigh was reserve aboard Leon.

In the walk, trot and canter division, the final was won by Madison who won aboard the pattern averse Pumpkin  with Teagan on Baxter in reserve.

Congratulations to all the Challenge Finalists.

Walk trot Sunday might be our favorite day of show weekend.

The celebration features walk trot riders of all levels, from leadliners to our 10 and under walk and trot academy stars.

We introduced 5 riders in our maiden division, and they rode like they’d been showing for a long time.

Our four splits of 9-10 year old equitation was fierce, from our academy group to our newest riders who were finishing their first year of in-barn showing.

Two splits of 8 and under walk and trot riders finished the rail work of the day, and they were fierce.

We finished the day with the 9 riders who competed in the pattern class for riders 8 and under. (We put the class on Sunday because Friday night goes too late for our youngest riders.)

These brave riders rode into the arena alone and performed the same walk trot pattern as the older riders did on Friday night, and they rode incredibly well.

We’re so proud of each and every rider who competed this weekend.

We have many people to thank for our glorious weekend of in-barn showing.

Great thanks to the parents who support these riders, and who make the weekend happen. They created gift baskets, set up and staffed a concession stand, and so much more. They were supporting the rider(s) in the ring as well.

Special thanks to Matt and Jaye who grilled on a wet, windy Sunday so everyone could enjoy burgers.

Thanks to the Center Ring staff of Judge Sydney, Announcer Wendy, and the volunteer ringmasters who kept the show running safely and smoothly.  Thank you for your time and expertise.

Thank you to the helpers on Saturday, and the crew of ‘personal assistants’ who make the show run on Sunday. These Knollwood Kids who are known for their patience, kindness, and horsemanship took such good care of our walk trot stars. These assistants made sure the horses and riders were comfortable and ready to show.

Most of all, thank you to our amazing group of lesson horses. Their kindness and humor remained to the end. We owe them a fancy dinner out.

Meanwhile, in Springfield ...

At the Illinois State Fairgrounds, the show team was competing at the Mane Event Horse Show.

Nineteen show horses and their riders were competing in the most beautiful show arena around, and they had quite a show.

To mention a few stories…

Friends since their little Knollwood Kid days. Richie and Mia got to show against each other again last weekend. The reunion had Richie and Doc winning the 14-17 equitation qualifier with Mia and Dylan in second. Horse friendships are the best.

Richie won the championship with barnmate and friend Natalie in reserve while Mia finished fourth.

In the Good Hands National Final, Maiya and Riddle finished 5^th while Brooklyn and Gigi finished 6^th. This was a grand accomplishment in a class of the best riders in the country.

Other Highlights?

Maddie and Averie enjoyed another show in the 10 and under walk and trot division and always found time to enjoy themselves.

Tancy and Mickey continued their fun season, even winning the Adult Show Pleasure Championship.

Allison and Arthur enjoyed another good show, as Arthur continues to grow into his big show horse body.

Congrats to all of Team Knollwood who competed at this terrific horse show.

It’s on to the UPHA National Championship American Royal for the show team.

It’s Grand Finale Weekend!

We’re looking forward to celebrating our lesson program at our last in-barn show of the season.

Our three day show features 90 riders who have been hard at work improving their horsemanship skills. Spectators will watch the results of hours and hours of skill building. It’s going to be quite a weekend, and we’d like to introduce some of the teams who make this big event run like clockwork.

Knollwood Parents

They’re just the best.

Melissa, Kelly, and friends are leading teams to run concessions, gift baskets, and just about anything else you can think of. We’re grateful beyond belief for these parents who donate precious weekend hours to support the cause.

Show Judge Sydney Budzinski

A Knollwood Kid for life, Sydney started riding at age 7, and never really left. She is a national and world champion equitation title holder, and really enjoys her time with young riders. We’re thrilled that she’s sharing her expertise with us this weekend as the show judge.

Wendy the Announcer

Wendy is a recently retired high school teacher and choral director. She knows the horses and many of the riders, as she rides with us on Mondays after she helps us brush horses for the busiest lesson day of the week. She’s quite a singer in her own right, too!

Ringmasters

We have an assortment of volunteer ringmasters who keep the show arena safe. They’re accomplished riders, and are well acquainted with all the lesson horses, and plenty of the riders.

Personal Assistants

These are the Knollwood Kids you see taking care of horses and riders outside the ring. They prep horses in the morning, perform tack and rider changes, and basically make sure that horses and riders are comfortable. They calm nerves, cheer for all, and create the next generation of show stars. We couldn’t do it without them.

Pam the Concierge

Pam is our friendly face in the school barn lounge for walk trot Sunday. A professional horse show mom, and Wednesday night admin, Pam can tackle any horse show event. She’ll help straighten back numbers, calm jumpy nerves, and have the answer for anything that comes up.

Instructors

We have an unbelievable staff of instructors. Some are part time, and some are full time, but they’re all here working towards the same goals.

We strive to develop strong riders who respect their horses and the process. Learning to show horses isn’t easy, and it doesn’t happen overnight. Our instructors are on the job to teach riding and so much more. Our riders learn the value of sportsmanship, patience, and mental organization.

We love goal setting. Confidence comes from achieving goals, not from ribbons. Most of our riders have goals for the weekend, and they all have the skills to achieve them.

We also remind our riders to be grateful for the opportunities they have. Not everyone is able to ride remarkable horses and learn all the lessons they teach.

The instructors are possibly more excited for the weekend than their students!

UPHA National Championship American Royal Horse Show

Team Knollwood lost quite a character today when Pony Frank lost his fight with a brief illness.

Frank came to us with that classic pony name, and it fit like a glove.

He lived at Knollwood for 16 years and raised many wonderful Knollwood Kids.

For every day of those 16 years, Frank would pretend to not remember where his stall was, so he could run down the whole aisle to steal some of Fred's grain.  It didn’t matter if Fred was already in there or not. Frank would stand in front of Fred to eat while Fred backed away from the pony. Even Fred knew he was in the presence of greatness.

He was smart as a pony could be and was super talented at escaping his slip stall even when hooked up with the butt chain closed. We suspect he may have actually had thumbs.

Frank loved to play games on horseback and put up with just about anything.

He was a favorite contestant in Halloween on Horseback. He’s been everything from a carousel pony to a banana split.

A favorite bareback mount, riders knew they had seriously long legs when they could hook their feet under pony’s girth.

Most of all, he was a grand teacher. He was trusted with the smallest of riders and knew his job. Frank had no trouble working in the arena with big going show horses, as he never doubted his own importance.

We will miss our pony who taught us that good things can come in small packages.

Peace to you, Pony Frank.

Hazel Belle may have crossed the rainbow bridge, but she lived every day to its fullest.

Make Friends That Are Different Than You

Your friends don’t have to look like you, act like you, or even be anything like you. I spent hours with cats, horses, and people. And  yet, many of them understood me better than other dogs.

You Don’t Have to be Loud

Sometimes, the most interesting creatures don’t make a lot of noise.  I found that when I DID make noise, everyone came running. Sure, it usually involved a sandhill crane in the pasture, but everyone knew SOMETHING was up.

Help Whoever You Can, Whenever You Can

While I never got my PHD in psychology, I could see when someone was having a tough day. The best thing to do was to sit with them in the lounge. Sometimes, I got to lean into them and share ‘Hazelness’ with them up close.

I also guided patterns in the arena by not being in the way, and kept people warm for hours by sitting in their laps.

Whatever you can do to help, just do it.

Embrace the Outdoors

People like to complain about the weather in Wisconsin, but there’s always something to enjoy. One of my favorite people, Tracy, told me, ‘There’s no bad weather, just poor clothing choices.’

Disclaimer: I've been to her house for play dates and pool parties. Her dog Rosie is a good friend.

So, my mom always dressed me for the elements so I could enjoy snow, wind or rain. I was even allowed to be naked and sleep on the toasty pavement in the summer.

You can’t change the weather, and there’s always something to enjoy.

Get Your Rest

I noticed that you horse people have to work. A lot.

Be sure to get your naps in. You’ll feel a lot better for it.

Be Happy and Entertaining

My mom Carol taught me tricks so I could be the life of the party in center ring. I earned a lot of mints, and had a lot of opportunities to have my butt scratched. (My wardrobe sometimes got itchy.)

I developed strong tail muscles from wagging, and I hope you all develop your smiling muscles.

Cheer For Everyone

I’ve been to a lot of horse shows, and I love them.

At horse shows, and everyday, remember to cheer for everyone. It’s tough out there, especially if you don’t have a boxer dog to make you smile all the time.

Spend time With Kids

Kids are my favorite.

Best days  ever? Summer camp days!

I couldn't get out of the house fast enough to greet the campers.

They're honest, they're fun, and everything is new to them. Enjoy their laughing, games, and love of life everyday.

And, they let me take naps with them.

Be grateful.

Appreciate your people.

Team Knollwood is full of friends who gave me years of happiness. Scott and Carol are the best, and Scott’s lap is the perfect place to spend an evening. Walks with Carol and Izzy are perfection.

Be grateful for the outdoors, your friends, the horses and pets in your life. Most of all, be grateful for the memories you have that will always make you smile and remember.

Memories are Forever.

Team Knollwood lost part of its soul on Saturday when Carol and Scott had to let Hazel go.

Hazel was a therapist for anyone having a rough day. How many of you enjoyed Hazel leaning into you when she knew you needed her?

Hazel loved all the Knollwood Kids. Scott and Carol’s house couldn’t contain her during camp, as she HAD to be in the barn when the campers arrived. Hazel’s summer days were spent with the camp kids. When they laid in the sun for naps, so did Hazel.

Hazel knew patterns in the arena. She kept of the way as she counted serpentine loops and circles. When riders were working on crazy patterns, we created safe places for her highness to enjoy the sun.

Hazel raised Izzy to be a good Matton. With patience and the occasional reprimand, Hazel helped Izzy grow from a crazy puppy into a proper horse show dog. Of course, Izzy loves everyone, as Hazel taught her.

Most of all, Hazel loved Carol and Scott. The look in her eyes when it was time to go back to the house with them as all you needed to see.

For a dog found running the roads of rural Arkansas and sent to a Boxer rescue, Hazel lived a heavenly dog life with Scott and Carol. She had the freedom of life on a farm, parents who adored her, horse show dog friends around the country, dog friends at home, and a tribe of people who adored her every day. And kids. Millions of kids.

We wish her peace, sunny naps, and play with her friends who went over the bridge before her.

There will never be another Hazel Belle Boxer Matton, but we’re all better people for having been in her world for a while.

Knollwood Kids of all ages rode like rockstars, and brought wonderful memories home as well as some serious accomplishments.

Leighton and Teddy are a force.

Leighton and Teddy completed their first year of junior pleasure equitation finals with a bang. Leighton enjoyed learning all about the walk trot and canter show world this year and was Reserve National Champions in the UPHA Pleasure Challenge Cup Final, won the silver medal in the Pleasure Equitation Olympics, and earned the reserve national title in the Saddle and Bridle Pleasure Equitation Medallion final at St Louis.

Congratulations to this personality plus team on their exciting year.

Avery and Maddie were walk trot royalty.

Knollwood’s walk and trot equitation riders are both in their first year of competition in the show horse world, and they’re having a grand time learning the ropes and making friends.

Both of these Knollwood Kids are dedicated horse girls, and work very hard in their lessons. Their efforts were rewarded in St Louis with some high ribbons and great fun.

Senior Pleasure Equitation Riders? Super Strong.

Maiya, Natalie, and Sophie represented us well.

In her final year as a junior exhibitor, Natalie won the American Saddlebred Horse and Breeder’s Association National Championship of Pleasure Equitation. Teammate Maiya was reserve on Riddle, and, in her first year of competition in the show horse world, Sophie and Gamora finished a strong 5^th.

The Saddle and Bridle Pleasure Equitation Medallion Final is always a deep competition at St Louis.

After railwork and patterns, the skills of the riders was evident.

Maiya and Riddle turned in consistent, dynamic performances to win the event. Natalie finished in fourth, and Sophie was 9^th.

Shaye was reunited with her partner Lady, and performed a great pattern in the Medal qualifier to finish second.

College man Richie came to compete in trimmed equitation, and barnmate Brooklyn joined him at the show.

These two riders show beautiful, talented horses with lots of energy. Richie and Brooklyn rode them beautifully in some wonderful competition.

Richie finished up by winning the equitation championship, while Brooklyn and Gigi finished 3^rd.

Addison and Robert continued their first season together with impressive rides in the show pleasure division, while Tancy and Mickey were stars in the Veteran Pleasure division.

Handsome, Arthur, and Jaydee continued their winning ways for the Schuhs and Nicole.

Next up for the show horses?  They’re off to the Mane Event Show in Springfield October 15-18.

Mane Event Horse Show

The first of the ‘Big Three’ equitation finals is up for grabs at Mane Event.

Equitation riders from all over the country will be in Springfield to compete in the Good Hands final, the oldest of the three that make up the Triple Crown of Equitation.

The show also features highly competitive performance horse classes, all held in the beautiful coliseum.

Hugo

Your Lazy Co-Worker

You know the guy. He nods off at his desk, misses calls, and always talks about how busy and tired he is.

Behold Hugo. Born at Knollwood, and born to be a lesson horse.

He’s perfect. He reminds each and every rider that he’d rather have been born a slug.

Yet, he’s safe as can be, has a beginner trot to die for, and quite frankly, even RIchimond the yellow cat could sit his trot.

His valuable lessons include:

·         Never give up. If you follow through long enough and firm enough, you’ll get whatever you’re asking for.

·         Lazy can be overcome with hard work.

·         Lazy isn’t about everything. If you’ve ever played games on Hugo, you know that there’s speed in there. You just have to work to get it.

·         Lazy frequently equals smart. Hugo is a pattern master if you refuse to give in.   Did you ever think how hard it must be to move that slowly?

Bilbo

The “There Must be an Easier Way to Do This’ guy

You know this one. He argues about how to do everything as he complains about being overworked and underpaid.

Don’t get us wrong, we all love Bilbo, and he provides countless hours of entertainment to all the instructors.

Bilbo dreams of cutting lessons short when he stops at the chute gate and stares longingly up the chute.

He makes a lot of eye contact with the instructor running his lesson, especially if it’s Molly. He keeps close eyes on Molly so he can poop at the farthest corner to make her travel to clean up after him.

Always looking and trying to find a moment to rest, slow up, or make that circle a little smaller.

His important lessons:

·         Keep your reins short. You never know when his head may come up and re-shape your circle.

·         Watch his adorable fuzzy ears. Their attached to his very active brain.

·         If you’re riding with Molly, there WILL be poop breaks.

Fred

The Secretly Competitive Co-Worker

To look at him, you’d think that Fred was just another slightly overweight middle aged man. He does his day in,  day out job fantastically well. He’s taught countless Knollwood Kids how to walk and trot, taught them circles and serpentines, and emergency dismounts.

You’ll get a glmpse of secret Fred when Honey Bee is in the arena. He speeds up and tries to keep up with the Hackney. She, of course, completely ignores him.

Truly competitive Fred comes out when its time for games on horseback. He thinks relay games are enjoyable, but he can’t contain himself when it’s time for ‘Steal the Crop,’ or the latest variation, “Steal the Carrot.’

This walk trot superstar just can’t hold it in, and frequently canters. The experienced riders who have experienced this have all said, ‘It’s really not that bad.’

Whup, Fred.

The lessons of Fred:

·         Like people, horses often have hidden competitive streaks

·         Be ready for anything

·         Even the steadiest of horses and people like to have fun on the job

Pony Frank

The Guy Who Watches Everyone Work

You know the guy.

He watches everyone work, and has an opinion on everyone. Oh, and he has to stop working to watch.

Our legendary pony is a master watcher.

Pony Frank can be trusted with the smallest of riders, and is a small box of perfection. If he sees something interesting, he’ll stop and watch. He doesn’t stop fast, or start up again quickly, he just watches.

He especially likes to watch Scott’s ‘discussions’ with show horses who don’t always agree with Mr Matton’s plans for the moment. Of course, he silently passes judgement.

Pony Frank’s life lessons:

·         Communication is key. If you keep the pony brain occupied, he’s much less likely to stop and enjoy the view.

·         Life isn’t a spectator sport.

Earl

The Guy Who Hates Change

Everyone loves Earl. Especially instructor Court.

However, he is your future co-worker who dislikes change, and rages against it.

When he first came, Earl lived in the stall currently occupied by Mulligan. He has never forgotten this fact.

A few months later, we needed  a red box stall for a show horse, so Mulligan moved to Earl’s box stall.

Fast forward a year or so, and Earl still has days when he trots into Mullligan’s current stall.

Earl’s unique lessons:

·         Embrace change. You’ll meet new people or horses. Earl is now good friends with next door neighbor Sherman.

·         You’ll learn things!

Murphy

The dramatic one.

You’ve all met this fella.

If something happens, they ignore the facts and start telling their version of events and make it bigger each time they tell the story. Murphy would be on social media all the time.

In lessons, he teaches riders to chill out and reassure the runaway brain that, in fact, the screen door is not a killer. Neither is the show barn.

Did you ever wonder why he’s better outside? There’s too much going on out there to obsess on any one thing.

Murphy’s lessons:

·         Drama begets drama. If you answer drama with short, sharp responses, the instability escalates. When you answer it with cool, calm, slow firmness, you become the drama antidote and it disappears.

·         Most dramatic creatures aren’t the most intelligent, so be slow and give them a chance to process the message.

When you give your child the opportunity to spend time with horses, you give them so much more than physically technical riding lessons. Knollwood Kids learn communication, problem solving, empathy, respect, and the lesson of never giving up.  These are just a few of the life lessons imparted by our unbelievable string of lesson horses and our talented instructors who translate and teach the knowledge.

The show horses are heading to St Louis for a favorite show. In addition to being a hospitality plus show, it features 2 pleasure equitation finals, the ASHBA National Championship for riders 17 and under, and the Saddle and Bridle Pleasure Equitation Medallion Finals. The medallion features a 13 and under division in addition to the final for riders aged 14-17.

Team Knollwood just returned from the Monarch Show Series National Championship in Springfield, Illinois. The show is run by a terrific team that is organized, friendly, and welcoming to all competitors. The Monarch show series allows riders to love their horses who aren’t going to the World’s Championship in Louisville. They qualify throughout the year at smaller shows, and gather in the beautiful arena at the Illinois State Fairgrounds to celebrate their accomplishments.

The Monarch group welcomes saddlebreds as well as horses who compete  in open ‘all breed’ classes. Their full compliment of classes even includes ranch riding.

The academy classes on Saturday and Sunday are large, and super competitive.

Did we mention that the ribbons are bigger than Louisville’s?

Monarch is also home to two pleasure equitation national finals.

The Pleasure Equitation Olympics started the equitation calendar on Friday.  In their first season showing at the canter, Leighton and Teddy were the silver medalists in the junior division.

Knollwood Kid Maiya was the silver medalist in the senior division riding Riddle

These finals were well stocked with talented riders who showed like pros both on the rail and in workouts.

Saturday brought the UPHA Pleasure Challenge Cup National Final, which is also split into age divisions.

In a repeat of the Olympics, Leighton and Teddy finished reserve champion in the junior division.

Natalie and Garfield finished reserve national champion in the senior division.

This final is run by the trainers organization, so the judging is a little different than the other finals. In the UPHA finals, 60% of the score is based on showmanship, and 40% is on the pattern. The other finals are 50/50.

Mia won the equitation qualifier at the show and finished reserve in the championship. Barnmate Maiya won the championship

These two grew up together at Knollwood and are both competing at the highest level now.

The Monarch show recognizes the power of kids growing up with horses, and with people competing in any way they can.

Many of the top equitation riders had ridden with the same barn that they started riding with. Leighton, Mia, Maiya, and Sophie all started their lessons with us, and enjoyed the process. Knollwood Kid Natalie may not have started her lessons at 2800 Oakwood Road, but she has embraced the unique program at Knollwood.

We are fortunate to be in an area with fabulous academy programs feeding into their show barns. In fact, the rider who won both of the junior finals started her lessons at Highland Ridge and just started her show horse career with them this year. What a way to start!

Seven Knollwood academy riders attended Monarch this year, and showed like rockstars.

Thea, who’s off to Stanford to start college this week, finished first or second in all of her adult division classes. We’ll miss her while she becomes even more brilliant, if that’s possible.

Jules, Samara, and Sophia showed in the tough 14-17 divisions while Charlotte, Dilly, and Jilly were fierce contenders in the 13 and under classes.

Jilly, Dilly, and Charlotte finished first, second, and third in their equitation championship to finish the show!

Look for these up and coming riders as they continue their educations.

We love the process.

If you think you might be interested in joining our academy show team for 2026, please join us on Saturday, November 8 for a parent meeting. You’ll learn about riding requirements, schedules, clothing, and the financials of showing. We ask that this be an ‘adult only’ meeting since we will be discussing fees. We’ll host a follow up meeting later in the month.

The Knollwood community recently sent a $550 donation to Saddlebred Rescue in memory of Knollwood Kid Hanna. Thanks to everyone who donated.
