They turned out OK, & I swear the Steelers basket is no where near as lumpy & misshapen IRL as it looks in the photo. They're 7" tall with a top diameter of 40", (the size of a dinner plate), so they should be able to hold a fair amount of goodies :) I'm thinking more toys & less candy this year.

Linking up

To Be Fair, I Needed Almost All of It

I had a lovely time shopping with Miss Bea today :) And boy, can the two of us do some fabric shopping. Neither clouds nor rain nor grumpy chauffeurs (thank you, dad) kept us from our appointed spending.

We hit Joann's first. The NFL fabric is the backing for my next quilt. Thank goodness for 50% off coupons. I really really really wanted that fabric, but did not want to pay full price for it. Turns out half of my bobbins didn't work with my new machine, so I picked up some replacements. I didn't actually need the yard of batik or the novelty FQ's, but, um, they were on sale.

A bite of lunch & then on to one of the very few LQS within a fifty mile radius.
Pretty, huh? I think that will just about cover the Pet Quilt as far as the colored fabrics go. I still need a very light cream for the background fabric, & a few shades of rust for one of the dogs. Oh, & some white on white tonal. I think everything else can be "shopped" from my stash.
I'll probably be on a buying moratorium until for a while. At least until I get the Steelers top done, anyway. Well, unless we find another dollar a yard sale like we did last year, then all bets are off :)

Pixelated Angel ~ Only 1,344 Pieces Left

Up at 3:45 this morning. Seems I'm about a week ahead of Daylight Savings Time. Maybe by
Monday or so I'll start keeping normal, human hours again. But waking up uber-early seems to be working very well for me, as far as this quilt goes.
Managed to finish off three & a half more blocks today. Might have managed more, but the next 5 lines I did I seriously messed up. So I'm done with sewing on it for the night. I may set up the pieces for the next few block sets. I've learned from experience not to work too far ahead. For some reason cats & dogs find well ordered little blocks of fabric completely irresistible.

If all goes well, I should have this ready to sandwich by next Friday. Monday is set aside for the Disaster Area Reclamation Project (or *housework*, as the rest of the world calls it), but the rest of the week will be sew, sew, sew :) Any ideas on how to quilt this little lady would be highly appreciated, cuz at this point, I got no clue.

Linking up with Confessions of a Fabric Addict

March Meeting Highlights + a finished project

Today's meeting was so much fun girls! It was nice to sit and visit and chat and talk over each other and nibble on goodies and try to refrain from shaking a certain someone whom we all love so much ;) I think we did a good job of cheering up a dreary and rainy day, even if you all had to travel through the mud-pit-that-used-to-be-my-road to get here!

Aimee and Mom arrived a few minutes ahead of Aunt Edith this morning. Aimee immediately pulled out her finished Teddy Bear Quilt and proceeded to pick it apart by pointing out all of her 'errors' {insert sisterly eye roll here}. Pu-leeze! That quilt is totally adorable and quilt-y and beautiful! She gave the finished quilt to Aunt Edith who said she would treasure it forever, lol!

Mom was excited to let us know that the apartment is getting new carpet and a fresh coat of paint this week which means her and Lee will be moving very soon! She's been packing and sorting like crazy trying to get ready to go! This is sad, but I have no idea whether mom was working on a project or not because we were all so busy talking that I didn't even notice what anyone else was working on!

Oops. I think we've all been cooped up in the house for a little too long. Adult conversation with someone other than a kid or a husband is wonderful!

Aunt Edith finished two more knitted squares for the bin. She also passed around a new craft magazine that she subscribed to around and was happy to tell us about the new book she bought called The Tasha Tudor Cookbook.

Aimee added a cute little scrappy patchwork quilt to the bin.

Amanda showed us the camouflage elephant that she started crocheting for her son Michael, who is stationed at Camp Lejeune. He has collected elephants for years. It's going to be so cute when she finishes it up!

I found an old project in the bottom of my tote this morning and decided to work on it today. After a year {possibly a bit longer} I can happily say that my gorgeous shell afghan is finally finished! WooHoo!

Well, mostly finished. I still need to weave all the loose ends in. I'll get to it soon, Promise! Sad to say, I believe this is the first project I've actual finished since the Christmas Doily I made mom for our exchange!

I'm loving how lacy and stretchy this soft and cozy afghan is! The single crochet trim curls up just like a comfy old sweater :).

This week I'm linking up at:

Henrietta <3

WiP Wednesday ~ Pixelated Angel

Only 1 square done today :( You'd think, having been awoken at 4:30 am, I'd have gotten more done. Both quilts made it through just fine, I think it's just a paranoid fear of mine.

Linking up with Freshly Pieced WiP Wednesday.

Some Giveaways & A Few Interesting Links

Giveaways
~ Happy Quilting is having a giveaway to celebrate the Grand Opening of The Intrepid Thread's new Website. You'd think that would be fun, but with a cranky 6 year old & an even crankier 18 year old along for the ride, not so much. 150 mile round trip, 6 or 7 stops, & I ended up with the sewing machine I originally wanted in the first place. Yeah, it's a beast :) And $50 off, so bonus. Total pass for The Husband for the next week or so, since it was his birthday. Yuppers, gotta love a man that will take you sewing machine shopping on his birthday

I'm pretty happy with this machine. It's heavy duty, & I *think* even I won't be able to destroy this one for a while ;) I wish the throat were bigger (it's actually a bit smaller than my old one) but I'm pretty sure I can still muscle most of my quilts through there. The other ones I looked at all looked like children's toys; no thank you.

Gonna spend most of this week working on the Green X Quilt. 8 squares down, 40 to go. I've actually thought of a better way to do this, & likely will use the massive quantity of blue fabric I have in a similarly constructed quilt.

I hope to be done with this top by the end of this week. Shouldn't be that hard, if I don't get distracted ;) Hopefully I'll also have time to work on the corner blocks for The Pink Quilt, too. Gonna do a Lady of the Lake Feathered Star block, a Bargello & Round the World blocks, & a Lone Star block, all at about 15".

And I haven't forgotten your quilt, Bea. Well, it's finished. It's a disaster, but it IS finished.
This is a simple pattern, using basic techniques. I ought to be able to do this, no worries. However, this is the 3rd (!) time I've tried to make it. The first 2 attempts ended up in the trash halfway through. I began to wonder if the Universe was trying to teach me something. And this is what I came up with :

Sometimes, no matter how precisely we plan or how hard we try, things don't always fit together the way they should. But if we push on through to the end, we may just end up with something functional. It might not be perfect, it might not even be pretty, but it will warm someone's life just the same.

Linking this up to Richard Quilts Link A Finish Friday & Such A Sew & Sew A Stitch In Time: March Finishes Linky Party.

Some Giveaways :)

~ SewCalGal is giving away a copy of the novel Sonoma Rose. It's a great way to use up all of those odd-off fabrics that seem to accumulate when you sew & quilt. I have some upholstery samples in this one, some prints that were flawed, even some craft panel instruction pieces ;)
It *may* be that this quilt was started about 14 months ago. It *may* be that it only needed the binding on one side put on to be finished (ahem). It also very well *may* be true that I am easily distracted. Oh, well, it's done now.

Turns out when I did my accounting of projects the other day, I forgot 2. A tooth fairy doll, which will hopefully be done at some point before my daughter gets all of her adult teeth, & The Pink Quilt. Pretty spring colors just because a brown cow is boring ;)
The pattern is from the July/August 1996 edition of Hooked on Crochet, with a few *Aimee Alterations* thrown in.
Now I only have 5 quilts, 2 crocheted afghans, & a knit baby sweater to get out of the way before I can start on something else. It was so nice to get together after the holiday break! We did miss seeing Aimee, Amanda and Lisa though and hope they will be able to make it to the next meeting (February 2nd).

We all had little projects to work on and think we mostly accomplished something today! Mom was sewing binding on a comforter for a sister and had almost finished it up. Aunt Edith was working on a pair of slippers in camo yarn. I can't remember who she said she was making them for though! I was able to finish 4 and 1/2 granny square blocks for the squares bin. I found a pretty pattern for this Grandma All Round square that combines round and square rows. I like the way it turned out! The pattern is so simple too! I vaguely remember shooting off a quick reply to a newsletter email before the holidays took over, then I must have forgotten all about it!

Luckily this month's newsletter arrived this week and along with a new question, it had a link to the old one where I found my quote! Not a big deal, especially since there are a couple of dozen other quotes in the article, but still I was excited to see it there along with a link to A Hen's Nest!

Then I thought, why not come and ask you what your thoughts are on the subject? When it comes to crafting, which is better: quality or quantity?

While I meant what I said about preferring quality, I think that a lot of times my very idea of quality is what often holds me back when I am trying to create something -- whether it's a craft, recipe, photograph, blog post -- whatever. I get so caught up in the 'quality' that many times instead of enjoying the process, I become frustrated with myself for not 'getting it right' or not being able to create something that I feel is up to my idea of quality standards.

I'd really like to know your thoughts on the quality vs. quantity subject, and how you combat yourself when you doubt the quality of your own work.

Also, if you jump over to FaveCraft's Facebook page, they are giving away an AWESOME AccuQuilt GO! Again, Aunt Edith graciously hosted our gathering, how beautiful her home was decorated! I forgot to bring my camera along but Mom had hers handy so we were able to snap a few photos to share.

We spent a few hours just chatting and working on projects. Aunt Edith's new dog Rosy wasn't too keen on that idea and Aimee and I found Rosy wiggling her way into our laps on several occasions, what sweet pup she is!

We opened our exchange gifts after a vote from Aunt Edith and Lisa's daughter suggesting that presents should be first!

I think most of us admitted that we had either finished up our projects last night, or even this morning! I know I was guilty of finishing the doily I made mom last night when I remembered that I hadn't yet threaded the ribbon around the outside edge or wrapped it! talk about last minute gifts!

It was so fun to see what everyone came up with! Aunt Edith made Aimee a gorgeous set of throw pillows! they had pretty flowers in browns and creams on all four sides and a wide lace trim. Gorgeous! I made a nightstand doily for Mom and added a quilt block pattern with a few squares to get started. Amanda received a beautiful winter set from Mom that included a pair of mittens, a crochet hat and a too cute scarf with an adorable penguin! Lisa received a very pretty crochet scarf in greens. She missed the name drawing so we were so happy that Mom made her something special too :) And we we are glad to have you as the newest group member Lisa! Aimee made Aunt Edith a fab pair of knitted slippers -- not just any slippers but Sneaker Slippers! they are pretty cool and we all loved the speckled black yarn.

Amanda drew my name and I LOVE love LOVE the gift she made me! A BIG chicken hot pad and two awesome Rooster pot holders! They are so pretty and just perfect because I was looking at fabric the other day to make stool cushions that will match! WooHoo!

Doesn't it look great on our new table!

After gifts, I think that I can safely say, we feasted! Everyone brought a little something and between the hot chocolates, tea, coffee, sandwiches, assorted breads, fruit, pickles, fudge and dump cake -- we left feeling quite satisfied! We're taking a short break to recover from Christmas and New Years and will return to meetings on January 19th. We're all excited to hear from Amanda how her son Michael's graduation goes. She'll be headed down to Parris Island for his Marine Corps Graduation!! Go Mike, we're all so proud of you!

Looking forward to another year of Knotty fun with all of you girls :)

Henrietta<3

11/17/11 Meeting Highlights

Just thought I would share a little about our meeting today, for those who couldn't make it - we missed you!

Alright girls! Welcome to the new blog! I'm so glad that we decided to keep it up as it's fun to see what everyone has to share and write, even when we can't get together. Everyone should be added and able to post from their blogger.com/home dashboard. Let me know if you're having problems, I can help!

I didn't have a chance to talk to Aimee today but I am hoping that she'll agree to do a weekly or bi-weekly giveaway posts with the best crafty things out there to win! If anyone else has ideas, then go for it! the more posts, the funner the blog will be. You can share crafts, life, recipes, whatever!

I was supposed to put something funny in here about mom, so I will just tell you that she worked on a crocheted slipper for hours today, then ripped it out because there is NO WAY that was going to be a slipper.... I think that pattern she borrowed from me needs some tweaking. She did find a different one though and I can't wait to see the finished pair!

Aunt Edith was working on a pair of knit slippers. I don't know how she could keep all the balls of yarn she had in order. She was making both pairs at the same time on the same needle! She said that it helped her to keep both slippers uniform. They sure were pretty!

Also, before we said our goodbyes for the day, we thought up a new project for the group -- if everyone is game. We all have scraps and extra bits of yarn lying around from our yarn projects. Heck, I have a whole box of baby balls ;) Wanna make some Scrappy Lapghans?

This can be an ongoing thing if we like it, and NO deadlines. If you feel like knitting or crocheting a square or two, bring them to a meeting and we'll toss them in a "Scrap Square Bin". When the bin gets full, we can spend a meeting or two whip stitching them together. What do you think?

Aunt Edith suggested keeping the squares basically the same size for easier blanket making and thought 5" squares would be a good size to stick to, give or take. We can always add a row or two of single crochet to squares if needed. We just thought this would be a fun way for everyone to use up their scraps and put a little piece of everyone into some donation blankets.

One last thing - do any of these fonts catch your eye? I'm thinking we'll just keep the blog nice and simple for now, we can always spruce it up a bit later on!

click the image to see fonts at full size!

Henrietta

God Bless The U.S.A. May we never forget that day..

by Beatrice Gevin on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 8:40pm
.

I remember walking into my daughter house asking her if she was ready to go. I

was taking my daughter the cancer center in Erie, and was to watch my

grand-daughter when we got there..hoping & praying for good news for my

daughter.. And she says, mom listen something happen on the t.v. and we wacthed

together as things where unfolding right in front us. Just listening to all the

horriable news that the World Trade Center had just blown up. We thought we

where all under attack right than no one knew what was going on. So we had to

make it to her appt. and news was all over everywhere and we where just all in

shock and all I wanted to hear that day is that my daughter was cancer free so

she could be here to raise her son & daughter. My heart was heavy & so

breaking so for everyone that was at the world trade center & than for the

other plane that went down in Pa. also. And not knowing what was going to happen

again I thought this could be the end of the world. I prayed for God to Bless

The U.S.A. and to help all those you had gone threw that day to help others and for all

the famlies who loss so very much that day. As the day went on and the sky was so very silent & nothing but stillness in the air. I was wonder & thinking of all who lost their life's that day & days after that. What would I do if I lost a loved one. I do not think I could go on. But that day I had to be thank-full to God for the doctor that giving my daughter the good news that she was cancer free that day..but my heart was so very heavy

broken for all who lost so much that day. I will never forget that day. I will

always be praying for God To Bless The U.S.A. As I write this ,relized that I

made a quilted wall hanging in memory of my dad serving our country in WW11.

A fabric with red white & blue with big yellow flowers with stars & stripes with the words," GOD BLESS THE USA". Also I put 3 photo's on the quilt, one of a little baby trying on he's

daddy big shoes on, likes he's in a hurry to grow up. And a soldier kneeling at a cross

who has losed a loved one. And my father in he's wheel chair at the V.A.

hospital in Erie Pa. in hospice care a few weeks before he died, on Dec.6,2009.

I will be entering this in the Albion Area Fair this year! 2011 the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11th.as I am finishing it up on that day, in honor of all we have lost and are fighting for... "God Bless The U.S.A.

May we never forget that day. To stay strong to the end. Amen!

I wanted to share this with our sewing group, found this wonderful story of a women who and made a beautiful quilt and it is now in a Quilt Museum!
