When the fast food chain McDonald’s decided to add oatmeal to its menu in January 2011, it literally sugar-coated the offering as a “portable, affordable and balanced breakfast solution ... to help make it easier and more inviting for our guests to eat more whole grains and fruits.”

Although a single serving of plain oatmeal has one gram of sugar, one serving (253 grams) of McDonald’s fruit and maple oatmeal with brown sugar contains 32 grams of sugar. On January 13th the Atlanta Jewish Times featured a column by its owner-publisher suggesting that Israel might someday need to “order a hit” on the president of the United States.

In the column, publisher Andrew Adler describes a scenario in which Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu would need to “give the go-ahead for U.S. based Mossad agents to take out a president deemed unfriendly to Israel.”

Since the beginning of this world’s recorded history, prognosticators have claimed to know the day and time in which the world would be ending. Sir Isaac Newton, Nostradamus, right-wing televangelist Pat Robertson, just to name a few, have all forecasted the end.

Gillard jostled on Australia Day - Aboriginal Rights Protesters

There was a nasty surprise for Australia's prime minister and leader of the opposition who chose to celebrate Australia's national public holiday at an awards ceremony in a Canberra restaurant.

But a crowd of protesters got wind of the event and some 200 supporters of indigenous rights came from the nearby Aboriginal Tent Assembly, a gathering to protest against the official Australia Day they dub "Invasion Day". The Assembly is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Black unemployment rises as national jobless rate falls to 8.5, lowest in nearly 3 years

A burst of hiring in December pushed the U.S. unemployment rate to its lowest level in nearly three years, giving the economy a boost at the end of 2011.

The Labor Department said Friday that employers added a net 200,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent, the lowest since February 2009. The rate has dropped for four straight months. But black unemployment rose again from 15.5 to 15.8 percent overall and from 39.6 to 42.1 among African-American teens.

The hiring gains cap a six-month stretch in which the economy generated 100,000 jobs or more in each month. That hasn't happened since April 2006.

The Chinese have an interesting concept that quantifies Great Power status, called Comprehensive National Power (CNP). This index is produced by processing the economic, military and cultural factors that make countries powerful: GDP, technological development, number of tanks and ICBM’s, as well as “softer” factors such as influence on global media and international institutions. Since I’m not a think-tank, I can’t be bothered doing it “scientifically” by coming up with formulas and looking up all the hundreds of relevant stats that typically go into CNP calculations. But it’s surely possible to make rough estimates. Here they are.

Survey of black women in America paints complex portrait

The recently-released results of a survey focusing on black women in America paints a complex portrait of their lives. The poll, which was conducted by the Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation, included questions on topics ranging from religious to romantic concerns. The sample of 1,936 adults (of which 800 were black women), included black men and whites of both genders. According to the Washington Post, which reported on the study, the information revealed, "represents the most extensive exploration of the lives and views of African-American women in decades."

The Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation gathered data through phone interviews augmented with more in depth conversations to broaden fact collection. Read more...

Study: Black children form identity through race

Black children in the same age group tend to form their identity more strongly by the color of their skin than a shared language, according to a new study, while the opposite was true for white children.

A study published in the November issue of Developmental Science and conducted by University of Chicago researchers Katherine Kinzler and Jacelyn Dautel presented some preliminary findings regarding how young children identify with others.

According to a report in the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, the study cites four experiments, each designed to provide a specific piece of information and control for some variables. Experiments 1, 2 and 4 used children ages five to six, while experiment 3 used children ages nine to 10. - New America Media

Thousands of parents have expressed deep concern over California’s newly amended Section 6926 of the Family Code (Section 6926), which allows minor children, ages 12 years and older, to consent to vaccinations and other prophylactic medication, without requiring the approval of their parents. Conceptually, the decision rests solely with minors; however, realistically, state governments require children to be vaccinated. Many states plan to enact similar laws. This makes California’s law everyone’s concern.
