Robust Demand for Bullion in Europe, Middle East and China Again - Very Little Selling

Gold is trading at USD 1,605.80, EUR 1,227.90, GBP 1,026.40, CHF 1,495, JPY 124,984 and AUD 1,606.40 per ounce.

Gold's London AM fix this morning was USD 1,593.00, GBP 1,028.34, and EUR 1,222.94 per ounce.

Yesterday's AM fix was USD 1,605.00, GBP 1,027.003 and EUR 1,227.91 per ounce.

Cross Currency Rates

•Gold is mixed and marginally higher in dollars and euros today despite European finance ministers pledging extra funding to the IMF. Concerns linger that politicians efforts to address the euro zone debt crisis are failing.

•This means that average daily turnover on the SGE is up a significant 77% from levels seen in November suggesting that China's influence on the gold market may be reasserted in the coming days.

•Goldman Sachs gave a three-month price view on gold of $1,785 an ounce in a note today, a six-month view of $1,840 and a 12-month view of $1,940.

•As each solution fails, a bigger 'bazooka' is proposed and now comes the 'nuclear bazooka' of a multi trillion dollar bailout of Europe by the ECB, aided by the IMF and the Federal Reserve. Who will bail out Japan, the UK and the US from their coming debt crises?

Gold's London AM fix this morning was USD 1,593.00, GBP 1,028.34, and EUR 1,222.94 per ounce.

Friday's AM fix was USD 1,589.50, GBP 1,022.84 and EUR 1,218.94 per ounce.

Cross Currency Rates

•Gold has fallen marginally in most currencies, extending last week's loss, which was the biggest in nearly three months. Gold's weakness continues despite negative economic news such as Fitch's warning regarding downgrading France and other countries and geopolitical risk after the death of North Korea's Kim Jong-il.

•A Reuters poll of hedge fund managers showed how sentiment towards gold remains subdued and negative. Hedge fund managers are negative on gold's price prospects in the near term with many saying gold will fall below $1,500 an ounce over the next three months.

•Bullion banks remain positive on gold for 2012 with major banks predicting an average gold price of between 13% and 28% above today's spot at $1,595/oz. It will be interesting to see if these forecasts get as much international media coverage as the poll of 20 hedge fund managers has.

Gold Oversold and "Buying Opportunity" as "Protection Against Currency Debasement"

Gold is trading at USD 1,595.40, EUR 1,222.20, GBP 1,028.30, CHF 1,498.40, JPY 124,340 and AUD 1,595.0 per ounce. Gold's London AM fix this morning was 1,589.50, GBP 1,022.84, and EUR 1,218.94 per ounce. Yesterday's AM fix was USD 1,590.00, GBP 1,026.54 and EUR 1,223.64 per ounce.

Gold in USD 5 Yr (150, 200, 250 DMA)

•Gold is 1.6% higher in dollars and higher in most major currencies after four sessions of heavy losses and a 7% loss this week the biggest weekly loss since September. Liquidity squeezed speculators and banks have been closing long positions and selling gold this week but global physical demand remains robust.

•Nouriel Roubini has declined to elaborate and clarify regarding his suggestions that gold is a bubble. Roubini Global Economics has said that the breach of gold's 200 day moving average is "signaling that prices may drop to US $1400/oz."

•Denis Gartman whose pronouncements of the death of the gold bull market were widely publicized this week has said that he may buy gold soon if it falls sharply again. Gartman said 3 days ago that gold was poised to enter a bear market and would hit $1,450/oz before it breached $1,800/oz.

•The old adage to never "catch a falling knife" is worth remembering and it is still too early to say that this correction is over. A higher weekly close next week and weekly or monthly close above the 200 day moving average at $1,620.60/oz would likely see more speculative players come into the market again leading to gold regaining its footing and the technicals again aligning with the fundamentals.

Gold Falls due to Re-Hypothecation, Counter Party, Liquidity and Contagion Risk

Gold is trading at USD 1,591.10, EUR 1,224.20, GBP 1,026.30, CHF 1,501.40, JPY 123,940 and AUD 1,602.0 per ounce.

• Gold has risen nearly 1% in most currencies today after a dropping 3.5% in US dollar terms yesterday. The sell off yesterday has been attributed to more speculative players and funds selling off holdings before year end and going to cash due to alarming funding and liquidity pressures and increasingly elevated counter party risk.

• The MF Global and re-hypothecation scandal and concerns regarding a bout of vicious deleveraging likely exacerbated the sell offs in gold and silver.

• Gold's fundamentals have not changed however the technicals are very poor. Gold looks oversold but could become more so in short term due to momentum. In order for gold traders to regain some confidence the 200 day moving average at $1,620 will have to be recaptured.

• Academic research shows that gold is a hedging instrument and a safe haven. However, it can be correlated with risk assets in the short term but its hedging and safe haven qualities are seen in the medium and long term.

• 2012 is likely to be even more volatile and turbulent than 2011 and those who remain diversified or become diversified and own physical gold will again be protected financially.

• It is important to note that gold's falls have been primarily dollar related and gold has fallen by a lot less in pound and in euro terms.

• Roubini or @Nouriel tweeted yesterday evening:"Gold at a 7 weeks low down to 1635. Where is 2000 gold dear gold bugs?"

• Our expertise is not monetary economics so we will leave that debate to others (see commentary). However, we would note that experts on monetary policy such as the President of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, and former Federal Reserve Chairman, Alan Greenspan, have proposed considering a return to some form of gold standard.

• Roubini has been fairly good at calling world economic events in recent months, however his investment 'advice' has been poor and he appears to not understand 'investments 101' which is diversification.

Gold is trading at USD 1,664.81, EUR 1,261.20, GBP 1,067.30, CHF 1,557.40, JPY 129,550 and AUD 1,643.0 per ounce.

Gold's London AM fix this morning was USD 1,665.00, GBP 1,068.75, and EUR 1,262.22 per ounce.

Yesterday's AM fix was USD 1,680.00, GBP 1,077.06, and EUR 1,266.49 per ounce.

Gold in USD 1 Yr (100, 144, 200 DMA yellow line at $1,618/oz)

•The technical situation has deteriorated. The 144 day moving average which has provided good support for 2 years was breached yesterday and the 200 day moving average at $1,618/oz now becomes support. Absolutely nothing has changed with regard to the fundamentals driving the gold market. Investment demand for physical bullion remains robust internationally. Real macroeconomic, systemic and monetary risk remains and will support gold.

•It is the fourth successive month of record imports into China and overall imports through Hong Kong for the first 10 months of the year are around three times higher than a year ago.

•Gartman has been extremely inconsistent regarding gold in recent years. He has swung from being bullish on gold in all currencies to being bearish on gold in all currencies on a number of occasions. This is the second time that he has said that gold's bubble had popped and we are now in a bear market.

Gold's London AM fix this morning was USD 1,680.00, GBP 1,077.06, and EUR 1,266.49 per ounce.

•With concerns about liquidity and solvency in the European banking system, there is lending and possibly even selling of gold by banks to raise much needed cash.

•If as has been suggested, European banks are lending gold into the market that has come from exchange traded funds then this would validate the many concerns raised about the gold ETF market. Questions would again be asked as to whether many of the ETFs are fully backed by the gold that they claim to own in trust on behalf of clients.

•Already some hedge funds managers and investors have liquidated their ETF positions in favour of allocated physical bullion and we would expect that trend to accelerate as prudent investors rightly seek to avoid counter party and systemic risk.

Cross Currency Rates

•Gold edged higher in euros, pounds, dollars and all currencies today after the European Union leaders failed overnight to get all of the bloc's 27 members to agree a change in the EU treaty allowing fiscal integration as the 'decisive' summit in Brussels ended its first day in the early hours Friday.

•Market News International (MNI) reported that market sources said that the Bank for International Settlements, the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve have been "good sellers of gold" after it had popped to a fresh session high of $1,755.90/oz. The MNI report has not been explored and there have not been any official denials of official selling.

•At the end of the day, agreement or no agreement the fundamental challenge facing Europe and the developed world is humungous levels of debt in the banking sector and in the shadow banking system (derivatives with a value in the hundreds of trillions) and real global financial system.

•Myopic markets continue to have the attention span of a goldfish with the sole focus on the Eurozone crisis again in recent days while completely ignoring the global fiscal titanic as seen in the appalling finances of Japan, the UK and the US. The iceberg approaches and we only see the tip of the iceberg.

• UK interest rates remain at their record low of 0.5% and QE continues in the UK with a further £275 billion being created to monetize debt and buy gilts. Eurozone interest rates are now back at record all-time lows.

• Negative real interest rates, with inflation much higher than deposit rates, make gold an important diversification for investors and savers to hedge against currency debasement and monetary risk.

• The Wall Street Journal reports today that central banks are preparing for life after the euro with countries studying printing national currencies in case the single monetary union collapses.

• The chief economist of UBS, Larry Hatheway, has warned that banks "should be asking themselves whether they would survive a collapse of the payments system, a run on deposits and widespread default on assets."

Cross Currency Rates

•Gold's continuing failure to make strong gains given the heightened monetary and systemic risk continues to surprise many in the market. It may be due to further profit taking after last week's 4% gain, 2011 year end book keeping and booking profits after a 20% gain and increased risk appetite in the wider markets.

•Individual Japanese investors who purchase more than 10 million yen ($129,000) in debt with a 0.05 percent return and keep it for three years will receive a gold commemorative coin weighing 15.6 grams (0.55 ounces), the Finance Ministry said in Tokyo today, worth about $948 based on current prices for the precious metal. Silver coins weighing 31.1 grams issued as 1,000 yen currency will be distributed to those who own more than 1 million yen of the bonds, the government said. The coins will be offered for debt going on sale in March.

•It looks like a desperate attempt to bolster demand for their debt which is understandable given the poor state of Japan's finances and the recent IMF warning that Japan's debt could "quickly become unsustainable".

Cross Currency Rates

•Gold is marginally higher in most currencies and is headed for its biggest weekly advance in six weeks after also seeing a gain of 1.8% in November. Gold's technical picture has become positive again and is now aligned with the very positive fundamental backdrop.

•The central bank of South Korea announced that it had purchased 15 metric tonnes of gold in November to raise its reserve of bullion in an effort to diversify its portfolio of its foreign reserve investment and reduce risks caused by market volatilities. It boosted the size of its gold reserves by US$850mn in November, up a massive 39% from the previous month. Its total gold reserves are now worth US$2.17bn.

•The United States has a debt crisis of its own with politicians unable to agree a plan to bring down the country's titanic deficit, which sits at more than $15 trillion and increased another $160 billion in the last two weeks alone. The ongoing woes have led to forecasts of further gold purchases, especially from Asia.

•Gold is at a 2-week high today as inflation concerns saw gold rise sharply yesterday after the Federal Reserve and the world's major central banks took coordinated action to prevent the euro-zone debt crisis from igniting a global financial meltdown.

•Despite November being an extremely volatile month which saw sharp losses in many bond markets and all major equity indices internationally, gold was higher in all major currencies in November.

Gold is trading at USD 1,713.00, EUR 1,289.80, GBP 1,099.00, CHF 1,582.10 and JPY 133,610 per ounce. Gold's London AM fix this morning was USD 1,704.00, GBP 1,095.61, and EUR 1,282.46 per ounce. Yesterday's AM fix was USD 1,717.00, GBP 1,098.32, and EUR 1,278.67 per ounce. Yesterday's PM fix was USD 1,717.00, GBP 1,098.53, and EUR 1,278.69 per ounce.

Gold Prices/ Fixes / Rates

Gold is mixed in various currencies but popped nearly $15 after the Chinese announcement that they would be lowering their bank reserve ratio. It shows the world's second largest economy is swinging into easing mode which is not a good sign. Hua Zhongwei, analyst at Huachuang Securities, Beijing: "It's the start of a relaxation cycle, and the central bank is expected to take more steps ... the economic slowdown is there, and capital inflows are set to fall further, and many banks are finding liquidity shortages."

Should morning and closing prices hit the same level a third day in a row today then questions will be asked as to whether the official sector and or bullion banks are attempting to fix prices at this level. This was attempted by the London Gold Pool in the 1960's when the Federal Reserve and seven European central banks capped and artificially suppressed the price of gold for a few years before the controls collapsed in 1968 due to free market realities.

Gold rose 24 times in the next decade from $35/oz in 1971 to $850/oz in 1980.

High hopes that the meeting of Eurozone finance ministers could result in a comprehensive plan for leveraging the European Financial Stability Facility rescue fund look set to be dashed again.

Too much debt and leverage led to the financial crisis and has led to fiat currencies falling 11 years in a row against gold.

Total holdings of Comex gold futures and options are back at levels seen in 2009. This shows that gold remains far from the speculative bubble alleged by Nouriel Roubini and some other vocal non gold experts.

Monetary and systemic risks remain and should see gold well supported at the $1,700/oz level. Indeed, gold could have bottomed on options expiry last week as is often the case.

Excited crowds lined the roadside waving big Venezuelan flags and chanting "It's returned! It's returned!" as a convoy of soldiers and armored cars carried the gold ingots from Maiquetia airport to the central bank in Caracas. The President of the central bank, Nelson Merentes, did not say how much gold bullion was brought back in Friday's shipment but said the bullion came from several European countries. "It has historic value. It has symbolic value. And it has financial value," bank chief Merentes said about the first shipment.

Currency Wars - Russia Officially Adds 19.5 Tonnes of Gold Reserves in October Alone

Market participants continue to be surprised by gold's continuing weakness and some are even questioning gold's safe haven status. However, the fundamentals of broad based global physical demand remain very sound as evidenced by the central bank gold buying data today.

Russia bought 19.5 metric tons of gold in October bringing their total gold reserves to 871.1 tons according to IMF data released today.

Importantly, it was central bank buying that broke the back of the anti-gold cartel or the London Gold Pool in the late 1960s early 1970s. This paved the way for the massive bull market of the 1970s.

Putin's calculated gesture may have been the most important statement on gold by a head of state since French President de Gaulle praised gold as the ultimate from of money and wealth: "There can be no other criterion, no other standard than gold. Yes, gold which never changes, which can be shaped into ingots, bars, coins, which has no nationality and which is eternally and universally accepted as the unalterable fiduciary value par excellence."

$15 Trillion US National Debt 'Supercommittee' Impasse to Support Gold

Gold is trading at USD 1,706.10, EUR 1,270.60, GBP 1,089.30, CHF 1,569.20, JPY 131,170 and CNY 11,190 per ounce.

Gold's London AM fix this morning was USD 1,704.00, GBP 1,085.42, and EUR 1,266.44 per ounce.

Friday's AM fix was USD 1,730.00, GBP 1,093.00, and EUR 1,279.87 per ounce.

Equities in Asia and Europe have fallen and headline risk is to the downside. The crisis in Europe is unlikely to improve in the short term and the US cross-party 'supercommittee' established to negotiate budgetary savings seems destined to miss the deadline for reaching agreement.

Barclays says it is sticking with a fairly bullish call for gold and says it sees the price at $1,875/oz in Q4, according to Reuters. Deutsche Bank say they expect periods of risk aversion to remain through 2012 and their strongest conviction trade remains long precious metals and specifically gold, according to Reuters.

Western dealers continue to see safe haven demand but much of the buying is from existing clientele adding to allocations and the vast majority of the western public remains unaware and uninvolved in the gold market.
