Back in black

2010-05-16T18:12:00.000+01:00

Apologies one and all for my absence of facts for over 2 weeks!!

But not to fear because yes, I am back.
And for one day only, the blog is black.

I have lots of strange and interesting facts lined up for you from my disappearance that I think ought to help make up for the lack of facts that you have suffered from.

So here we go :D

After dramatically losing weight, Caroline Clare from Ontario, Canada, developed strange electrical powers. These powers made metal objects jump into her hands and gave electric shocks to anyone she came into contact with. On one occasion, she managed to shock a line of 20 people holding hands.

Michele Rosciano, his son Giovanni, and his grandson Miguel were all born as the second child on the same day, same month and in the same hour as each other, just in different years.

Betty Lou Oliver from New York city had perhaps the worst, yet luckiest day of her life when she survived a plane crash AND a 1,000ft (300m) fall in an elevator in the same day.

In 1912, a 49 year old woman was attacked by a bull, having her intestines ripped out. But the doctor managed to clean up the wound, replace her intestines and sew her up. Simple really. . . She went on to live to the age of 105.

In ancient times, 36 million years ago, a 5ft, sun loving, giant penguin once roamed the southern coast of peru.

The tallest man ever, Robert Wadlow, was recorded at 8 ft 11.1in.
His hands were 12.75in from his wrist to the tip of his middle finger and are the largest recorded hands.
His feet were a UK size 36, equivalent to 18.5in in length, he holds record for largest feet too.

The highest batting average is held by Sir Donald Bradman who holds the record at 6,996 runs in 80 innings from 1928 to 1948.

"Angel Falls" in Venezuela is the highest waterfall in the world. It has a total drop of 979m (3,212ft) with the longest single drop being 807m (2,648ft).

The longest nails for a female were 8.65m long and the longest nails for a male are 9.05m long.

A baby in Liverpool was born after 8 hours of labour, weighing 8 pounds at 8 minutes past 8 on 08/08. To top that, the midwife who looked after the mother delivered 8 babies that day . . .

Despite being dead since 1994, Luang Phoo Budda Thawro gets removed from his coffin every year and dressed in a new orange robe to stand before worshippers at a monastery in Thailand on his birthday.

A suspect running form the police tried to make his escape through a construction site in Reno, Nevada, only to become stuck in wet concrete . . .

A rare plant found in Bolivia called the "Puya raimondi" can take up to 150 years to bloom. However, the instant that it does, it dies.

A dog in Hui Hu has adopted itself a pig as a replacement for the puppies that it sadly lost, the devoted pig follows it's new mum everywhere.

A dolphin off the coast of Japan was found to have an extra set of flippers.

An amazing phenomenon in Chamarel, Mauritius sees the Earth divided into 7 different colours. Most vivid at sunrise, the ground is divided into red, brown, violet, yellow, deep purple, blue and green. The colours never merge, not even in rain, and when mixed artificially in a test tube, they simply separate themselves out again a few days later. This was caused by mineral rich volcanic rock cooling at uneven temperatures.

I hope that you enjoyed your catch up on strange and interesting facts.
You'll be hearing form me again soon so keep checking! :D

The big 1-0

Can you spot the pattern?

Every time you lick a stamp, you consume 1/10 of a calorie.

There is a 2 foot long bird called a Kea in New Zealand that likes to eat the strips of rubber around car windows.

There are only 3 types of snakes on the island of Tasmania and all of them are poisonous.

There was once a town named "6" in West Virginia.

George Washington spent about 7% of his annual salary on liquor.

The average chocolate bar has 8 insect legs in it.

The longest words in the English dictionary with only one syllable are the 9 lettered words "screeched" and "strengths".

Finally, think about this . . .

There are only 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

!! BAM !!

2010-04-29T20:03:00.000+01:00

BAM: Lasers used to be measured in "Gillettes", the number of blue razor blades that a beam could puncture.

BAM: Newborn babies are given to the wrong mother 12 times a day in hospitals world wide.

BAM: A snail can have about 25,000 teeth.

Scared of flying? S

Sun-day

2010-04-25T18:02:00.003+01:00

A new dawn, a new day

And a new blog too!

Check out sheddingnewlight.blogspot.com for my own personal opinions on pretty much anything I can find. Don't fret though, I'm not abandoning this blog.

As the name suggests, it is indeed Sunday! So for today's post, enjoy some great information all about our friend, the Sun . . .

"Only 55% of Americans know that the Sun is star."

"Aztecs believed that the Sun fought darkness every night and that it required blood to give it enough strength to rise again. They gave the blood of prisoners as sacrifices and so sometimes started wars simply to capture prisoners."

"When a mantis shrimp snaps it's claws together, the bubbles from the claws heat up to the temperature of the Sun."

I hope that this post has enlightened you, bringing a few more facts out of the darkness.

So I leave you on this note:

"Why do we see pictures of the Sun wearing sunglasses, when the purpose of sunglasses is to protect your eyes from the Sun?"

Advice for life

2010-04-24T17:39:00.000+01:00

I thought that we could all do with some advice today.

So, should you ever find your self in the common situation of being threatened with a scorpion whilst on a night out, here's a quick tip:

"Even a small amount of alcohol placed on a scorpion will make it go crazy and sting itself to death."

Remember, it could happen to anyone.

Secondly, never try to steal from a dolphin, "dolphins sleep with one eye open".

And finally, I leave you with a quote of advice:

"If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you" - Arthur McAuliff.

Friday Thinking

2010-04-23T16:59:00.000+01:00

A few things for you today:

To start you off, did you know that "Albert Einstien never wore any socks"?

Each to there own I suppose . . .

Secondly, a quote, "With $10,000, we'd be millionaires!" - Homer Simpson.

I am aware that Homer is a fictional character and that the line was quite probably purposely invented. But, I am a fan of simple humour, and that made me laugh :D

Finally, I thought a poem would be an interesting addition to my third post.

"One bright day in the middle of the night
Two dead men stood up to fight
Back to back they faced each other
Drew their swords and shot each other
A blind man there to see fair play
And two big dummies to shout hurray
A legless donkey passing by
Kicked the blind man in the eye
A deaf policeman heard the noise
And came and arrested the two dead boys"

A personal favourite for pure genius.

Hope you enjoyed today's post. Tell me what you think by commenting and clicking a few boxes below.

Don't be put off by the parasites, it's simply a very diverse blog :)

The Difficult Second Album

2010-04-22T18:37:00.000+01:00

Since yesterday I have had a quick shuffle round of the site, added a few new features and altered some others.

Now you can tell me what you think of each post by ticking one of the boxes beneath. I'm hoping this will help me to work out the kind of thing you all want to hear about :D
There is also a news reel at the bottom of the page to keep you as up to date as possible. Have a look, you may find something interesting.

Right then, down to what we all want to hear then, my second post

Quote:
"The problem with the French is that they don't have a word for entrepreneur." - George Bush.

Fact:
"McDonalds is the world's largest distributor of toys!"

So there you are, just a couple more things to broaden your knowledge of potentially useless facts :D

I would also like to take this opportunity to recommend that you all try a CINNABON! They are Amazing. Take a look at the picture below ;)

First time lucky

2010-04-21T17:35:00.001+01:00

Welcome one and all to my brand new blog where you will be brought up to the minute facts, quotes and stories, amongst other things.

There are so many sites out there that ill provide you with quotes, or facts, but never both. So I've decided to bring it all together, everything that I know and learn that is deemed interesting enough to be shared, will be shared. You will know what I know, when I know it.

So here we go, to start off my entire site, one of my favourite facts of all time:

"Cocunuts kill more people in the world than sharks do."

Approximately 150 people die a year due to coconuts. In comparison, sharks only come in with about 4.
So next time your on a beach and have a choice between sitting under a palm tree, or swimming with sharks, choose wisely!
