MICROSOFT: SIX BURNING QUESTIONS AND EIGHT PRIMARY BUSINESSES

Microsoft executives are making a series of presentations today at the company's annual Financial Analyst Meeting, a day-long confab that brings investors and analysts from Wall Street and elsewhere to the company's headquarters. In simple terms, the event is a chance for the company to update the world on what it's thinking about. Which traditionally translates into lots of lists and diagrams.

Starting things off, the company said it is currently compartmentalizing its business into eight core areas: Xbox & TV, Bing, Microsoft Office, Windows Server, Windows Phone, Windows, Business Users, and SQL Server.

Another list, essentially setting out the agenda for the day, detailed the six areas where Microsoft senses that analysts and investors have the biggest questions: The business PC refresh cycle and Microsoft's market share; the impact of the iPad and slate computers; Windows Phone 7; the outlook for Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft's mobile business; cloud computing revenue and profit margins; and expense control.

On the subject of cloud computing and online services, Microsoft chief operating officer Kevin Turner pointed to new customer wins of Dow Chemical, Hyatt and the University of Georgia, announced by the company this morning. On the competitive front, he also called out quotes from a BusinessWeek article that quoted anonymous Jaguar employees grousing about the auto maker's transition to Google Apps.

Windows 7 – Fresh start

From the very start, then: installation. Windows 7 is configured to be a markedly less bulky and resource-intensive operating system, so the installation should be relatively quick, and there’s a especially lightweight version for netbooks. The 1st thing to note is that it doesn’t sound all that different from Vista.

How to upgrade to Windows 7?

The troubles that plagued upgrades from XP to Vista are gone, since the structure of Windows 7 builds on the changes made in Vista. Evenly, however, that will make upgrading from XP difficult.

If you are aiming to upgrade immediately from Windows XP to Windows 7, be aware that Microsoft doesn’t recommend it. Not only is it probably to take significantly longer, the directory structure is different between the two and many applications may not work if not run after a “fresh” installation.

The release offers many new personalisation choices like desktop PCs. If installing Windows 7 on an older computer, it’s likely best to check with the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor program to see whether your PC is compatible or if you are likely to see the improvements in speed that the OS can in essence offer.

For the most part, software that runs on Vista will run on Windows 7; many big-name software vendors of programs that don’t upgrade easily have free of charge upgrades available on the web.

Microsoft promises that its Windows Easy Transfer will smooth the process of moving your files from an older machine to your new Windows 7 computer.

However, be aware that many simple programs for handling things like instant messaging are missing from Windows 7 on install; instead, the idea is that users will begin to use the cloud-based services that form Windows Live.

What is RSS? (Really Simple Syndication) I’m regularly asked this question and thought it might be worth putting together a page to define RSS and hopefully shed some light on the topic.

We have a number of ways that you can subscribe to this site and receive updates. The main one that our readers use is our RSS feed. But what is RSS?
What is RSS?
RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites.
In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website you had to ‘bookmark’ websites in your browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added.
The problems with bookmarking
• You as the web surfer had to do all the work
• It can get complicated when you are trying to track many websites at once
• You miss information when you forget to check your bookmarks
• You end up seeing the same information over and over again on sites that don’t update very often
RSS Changes Everything
What if you could tell a website to let you know every time that they update? In a sense, this is what RSS does for you.
RSS flips things around a little and is a technology that provides you with a method of getting relevant and up to date information sent to you for you to read in your own time. It saves you time and helps you to get the information you want quickly after it was published.
RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’. Many people describe it as a ‘news feed’ that you subscribe to.
I find the ’subscription’ description helpful. It’s like subscribing to a magazine that is delivered to you periodically but instead of it coming in your physical mail box each month when the magazine is published it is delivered to your ‘RSS Reader’ every time your favorite website updates.
How RSS actually technically works is probably a lesson for another day but the key today is for you to understand why it’s good and how to use it.
