Back in days - OK, 2007 - there was a po 'of OS X spiffy Facebook app called Sync that pulled down your friends' contact info and added to the Address Book on your Mac This was particularly brilliant, if you are used iChat, screen names because it would be imported so you can chat with most of your friends before there was a Facebook Facebook Chat. Facebook Sync but it proved to be too good to be true when Facebook decided that their terms of service violation. Address Book Sync partially fills the void, allowing you to add your bulk-FB contacts to Address Book - less contact information.

What is good if you can not synchronize screennames and email addresses? Well, you can still synchronize photos and birthdays, and at least you have a Facebook phone book entry for each contact. Also, if you have the photos you have in your Address Book to one of your friends, you can uncheck a box to have Address Book Sync leave alone. If your phone can sync contacts with Address Book, this is also a quick way to get pictures of people displayed when calling. Address Book Sync works brilliantly and does not violate the terms of service. Now if I could understand only one way to add contact information for all these new entries ...

Digg could take on StumbleUpon, TinyURL with new toolbar

It seems that Digg is working on a similar StumbleUpon toolbar that allows users of Digg, bury or find stories, while you browse the network. Veronica Belmont first saw a spotted a screenshot toolbar to Flickr, and it seems that people from TechCrunch managed some additional information .

If the information is correct, here's how it works. Users will see a toolbar in the toolbar popup on their screens. The toolbar is displayed in an I-frame, which means that your browser is not specific and it is possible to leave at any time by pressing X.

When you visit the pages that have already been submitted to Digg, you'll see the number of votes received. Or you can send the current page. You can also view or bury stories stories.

The toolbar also create a shortened URL for any page you're visiting, from digg.com ... You can share this shortened URL via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook or other services in the same way you would TinyURL. Digg Google Toolbar is not available to the public at this point. And for all we know, this could be just a false alarm. But it seems certain that something could Digg and / or should offer in the future.

Google adds user generated photos to Street View

Google Street View allows you to see photographs of the city and its environs taken by cameras connected to the Google vehicles going along the main streets of the city in the United States and other countries like Japan, Australia and Spain. And now you can also find photos taken by amateur photographers, too. In this case, it'sa good thing, because the amateur photos are often of better quality and more interesting composition. This is what happens when a man takes a picture, rather than letting a computer to it.

Google is using Geotagged photos provided by Panoramio. The Company also some of these photos available in other applications like Google Earth. If you are displaying a location in the street you have an image, an icon in the upper right of the screen that lets you know that the images are available for users. Clicking on a series of images you can scroll through the popup. Just click the button to the right, which should now be classified as Street View, to return to normal display.

This has probably been my #1 Gmail pet peeve since I started using the service 4 or 5 years ago, and now it has finally been addressed: the ability to upload multiple attachments at once, rather than one-by-one. Additionally, when you attach files, you’ll now get a progress bar indicating how long until the file is uploaded and ready to be sent.
Now, Gmail essentially works like any other service on the Web that lets you upload files. When you click “attach a file” when composing an email, you can browse your computer and select multiple files by holding down the CTRL key on Windows machines, or Cmd on Mac. Once you’re finished, Gmail starts uploading and keeps you posted on the upload status.

It’s somewhat baffling that this feature took so long, while Gmail pushed things like beer goggles for email instead. But Google’s new found focus on adding utility to Gmail makes us happy, as in recent weeks we’ve also seen the addition of offline support and easier options for moving and archiving messages.

Microsoft publishes list of changes in Windows 7 RC

Microsoft continues to plug away at Windows 7, patch holes, fix bugs, and respond to a flood of feedback from beta testers. Today the team blog Engineering Windows 7 has developed a list that clarifies some of the changes made since the release of public beta.

The list includes a wide range of changes, including everything from cosmetics to touch the user interface, touchscreen interface enhancements, including support for improved peripheral Step by Microsoft partners.

Some interesting changes include:

Taskbar enhancements: the amount of real estate you'll have available for pinning programs has ben increased, and a 1280x1024 display will now accomodate up to 20 large icons - four more than in the beta. Taskbar icons also retain their glow color when you mouse over a thumbnail preview (in the beta, the glow disappears as soon as you mouse out).
Windows key + # tweak: apart from simply launching your first ten pinned apps with win + location #, a couple new tricks have been added. Pressing the key for an app that is running will bring it o the front, and you can hold win and tap its number repeatedly to tab through all of that program's currently open windows.

Improved multi-touch keyboard: if you've used the Windows on-screen keyboard before, you know how the special function keys lock when pressed once. That was a little confusing to users with a touch interface - the expectation was for keys to function exactly as they do on a normal keyboard (i.e. shift must be held down), so the OSK was changed to behave more like a real keyboard.
Windows Media Player overhaul: a lot of negative comments about the beta were aimed squarely at WMP12. Among the changes: Media Player will no longer display files it doesn't know how to play (like Apple's lossless m4a) in the library. Support has been added for the .MOV format used commonly in many digital cameras and camcorders, and device interaction has been tweaked to be less obtrusive. Improvements have been made to internet radio streaming performance and the Now Playing view has received some much-needed TLC.
Performance enhancements: by tracking user-generated data, Microsoft has been keeping tabs on things like how long it takes the start menu to open. The blog post points to 50-100ms as the target time for the menu to display. In the beta, the goal was met85% of the time - recent builds have pushed that to 92%.
Changes to libraries: FAT32 drives were not supported in Windows 7 beta libraries, but that has been corrected. Windows Explorer's header has been reworked to improve and clarify library navigation. The Windows + E shortcut has also been reverted to its pre-7 state and launches Computer instead of Libraries in Explorer. Create and Add to Library commands have been moved to the Explorer command bar to address concerns over posible data loss and confusion with the beta's drag-and-drop options.
Jumplists and pinning: files can now be pinned to an application regardless of whether or not it's the registered handler for that type. For example, if WMP12 is handling all your media defaults, you can still pin an MP3 file to EvilPlayer if you want. In order to prevent masive jumplists - like Explorer with its frequent access display - a maximum of 10 items are now shown, though that number can be tweaked if you like.

In recent months, Google has made several moves to increase its advertising revenues in some sectors (furniture, pictures), and cut that are not working as press and radio. Today, one of the most popular Google property outside of the research is also taking the monetization train - Google News.

A number of Google services just announced that they are about to shut down. The Google Video team announced that it will shut down uploads in a few months, while the Google Notebook team announced that it is stopping development (the service will continue to function, however).

According to Danny Sullivan, Google is also closing Jaiku, a Twitter-like micro-blogging service that was bought by Google before it even launched, but which has lingered in invite-only mode ever since. Google Catalog search, which made shopping catalogs searchable, will also be closed soon.
Update: Google will release the Jaiku code under the open source Apache license, so that other organizations can pick up where the Google team left off. It is not clear if current users will be able to transfer their accounts.
Another, relatively unknown project that is being closed now, is the Mashup Editor, which was based on the Google App Engine, and never left a very limited, private beta.
Will You Miss These Services?
That Google would shut down Google Video is not exactly a surprise, given that Google's own YouTube is far more popular. Google's Catalog Search will probably only be missed by very few users. We are, however, sad to see Google Notebook (one of our favorite Firefox addons), Jaiku, and Dodgeball go. These services had a lot of potential - and a lot of it remained untapped as Jaiku and Dodgeball remained almost unchanged after they were acquired by Google.
However, the current economic climate is probably making even a highly profitable company like Google focus on its core assets. None of the services that are being closed now had a lot of users and probably brought in very little to no revenue.

Shutting down these services was only part of Google's announcements today. In addition, Google announced that it is winding down almost all of its contracts with external contractors and vendors providing recruiting services to Google. Google will also cut 100 internal positions.
On the engineering side, Google is shutting down its offices in Austin, Texas; Trondheim, Norway; and Lulea, Sweden. The company is asking the employees who work there to move to Mountain View.
What About GrandCentral?
One service in Google's line-up we have always wondered about is GrandCentral - another service that was acquired before it even went public. Just like some of the services that Google is closing now, GrandCentral never came out of its invite-only mode after being acquired by Google. The fact that it is not being closed now, though, leads us to believe that Google is still having plans for this service.
