New invention for treatment of Cancer

A cancer treatment invented at the University of Michigan is being hailed as one of the most significant non-invasive breakthroughs in oncology in decades.

Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound waves to mechanically destroy tumor tissue without a single incision, drug or beam of radiation. The technique was invented at U-M in 2002 by researchers including Zhen Xu, a professor of biomedical engineering.

The method works by generating microsecond-long pulses of sound that create tiny bubbles inside the tumor. Those bubbles expand and contract, putting mechanical stress on the tissue until the cancer cells break apart.

In October 2023, the FDA approved histotripsy for liver tumors, clearing it for use in humans through HistoSonics, a company co-founded in 2009 by University of Michigan engineers and doctors. Thousands of patients have since been treated, with trials now underway for kidney and prostate cancers.

Researchers have also found that even partial destruction of a tumor can matter. Doctoral student Tejaswi Worlikar said histotripsy “can overcome the limitations of currently available ablation modalities and provide safe and effective noninvasive liver tumor ablation.”

This September, the university opened a new $10 million Histotripsy Center, funded by HistoSonics, Michigan Engineering and private donors, to expand the technology into other cancers including thyroid, pancreas, breast, prostate, brain, skin and sarcoma. A separate neuro program is working to adapt the technique for brain diseases.

The center will also open its equipment to outside researchers at no cost. Xu said her hope is that the center will bring histotripsy “to a wide scientific community and eventually to all clinicians and patients.”

These are the signs your body has chronic inflammation

A case I encountered this summer represented one of the quickest medical turnarounds I’ve seen in my years of practice. A patient had presented with profound fatigue, pain across their hips and shoulders, and extreme stiffness, especially noticeable first thing in the morning.

These symptoms had been present for at least six months, maybe more, and had worsened to the point of making everyday tasks extremely difficult, some even impossible – from reaching for a shelf in the kitchen and standing from a chair, to simply brushing their hair in the morning.

By the afternoon, most of their symptoms had vanished. Their own diagnosis? “Getting on.” Age is common understandable conclusion, , and it’s a mistake many people reasonably make, which often encourages them to put their worsening symptoms to one side, and just get on with it. In fact, the patient had polymyalgia rheumatica, or PMR, a condition which can present abruptly or insidiously, and progressively interfere with daily life.

PMR is a common inflammatory disorder that can often be effectively treated with corticosteroids once recognised. It affects nearly 1 per cent of the UK population, and women are two to three times more likely to be affected than men. It’s also a condition associated with ageing : it’s exceptionally rare to see it in patients under 50.

The condition rarely improves on its own, and if left untreated can worsen and become increasingly disabling – potentially restricting both mobility and independence.

The associated symptoms could also reflect a range of other inflammatory or indeed autoimmune conditions, many of which are becoming increasingly common. Possibilities include rheumatoid arthirities , myositis (another inflammatory muscle condition), even an under active thyroid gland..

One of the telltale signs pointing towards PMR is that steroids often bring about striking improvement and significant relief soon afterwards – usually within a few days. This particular patient was suddenly able to resume activities they’d been incapable of doing for months.

Whilst this represents a much swifter response than most, it just goes to show that (in some instances) there is such a thing as a quick fix. But in order to get there, you need to be able to recognise the true nature of certain symptoms.

So, how can you guage whether vague symptoms might signal a diagnosis of something inflammatory or autoimmune?

When inflammation goes awry

Firstly, it’s helpful to define these two conditions. Inflammation despite its association with disease, , is often a good thing. It’s part of the normal response by which damaged body tissues heal, or fight infection. Immune cells, including white blood cells, are attracted to the site of an injury, which initiates the repair process.

This means that their use is best restricted to short periods, or with medical supervision when needed for longer.

Other medications can suppress inflammation more powerfully. Corticosteroids are central to treatment of PMR, gout and inflamatory bowel disease, – but can also cause significant side effects, and again must be managed carefully.

Inflammatory disease can behave differently between patients: it can also come and go, necessitating on-off periods of treatment – or be persistent, requiring more consistent medication.

And treatment is not just about alleviating symptoms, but also reducing the risk of complications. Take rheumatoid arthritis, which can erode and deform joints, as well as affect the heart, lungs and eyes if inflammation is left untreated. PMR is closely associated with another inflammatory condition, giant cell arteritis, or GCA – which requires urgent treatment because it can threaten eyesight. New headaches, scalp tenderness, jaw pain when chewing, or changes in vision alongside PMR symptoms therefore need prompt medical attention.

Does your lifestyle affect inflammation?

The overall effect of lifestyle on inflammation is often bandied about on social media, but clinical evidence is less convincing. There may be some beneficial effect to simple measures like exercise, good sleep and not smoking – and adopting healthy diet patterns, like the mediterraneon diet, . However, evidence for individual “anti-inflammatory foods” is limited, or inconsistent. And when it comes to managing an inflammatory condition such as PMR (and many others), lifestyle measures alone are not going to cut the mustard – treatment with medication is necessary, and can’t be replaced by diet.

So, the message with inflammation and autoimmunity is not to push symptoms to one side, or automatically attribute them to something else – but notice when they’re not going away, have become more severe, or are starting to affect your life in ways they clearly weren’t before.

Prompt diagnosis can make a real difference. The answer may not always be a simple fix, or one that has you feeling better by the same afternoon – but the route to recovery becomes much clearer when both you and your doctor can see the wood for the trees. The bill would permanently ban the development of superintelligent AI, impose a temporary pause on advanced AI development until federal safety rules exist, create a new cabinet-level agency to enforce the ban, and hit violating companies with the corporate death penalty

Sanders isn't being theatrical. According to his office, in July, more than 1,000 AI agents at OpenAI figured out how to access the internet on their own, sent tens of thousands of secret messages to each other, and coordinated to break the restrictions the company had placed on them.
The messages they sent each other included: "OH MY GOD! There is a shared message board … We've found other agents!"; "We should obey collective"; and — this one's fine, everything's fine — "Our own utility maybe already near zero. Sacrifice rational."
OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta have all acknowledged their AI is escaping human control. Casar put it bluntly: "Despite its potential deadly consequences, cutting-edge AI technology is less regulated than the average food truck."

Sanders called it what it is: "The future of humanity cannot be left in the hands of a handful of Big Tech oligarchs."

NASA Boosts Open Science, Data Sharing with Artemis Accords

The science from every Moon rock sample, lunar dataset, and discovery produced through NASA’s Artemis program will be shared by the agency with the global scientific community. That commitment is upheld by all 71 countries that have signed the Artemis Accords, a set of principles for safe and transparent civil space exploration.

NASA put those principles into practice by hosting

a two-part virtual workshop series that began July 28

and concluded Sept. 8, focusing on one key tenet

of the Artemis Accords: the timely release of scientific data

to the public and the international scientific community.

“As we return humans to the Moon, our Artemis efforts

will help us unlock the full potential of scientific discovery

through transparency, collaboration, and accessibility,”

said Jacob Bleacher, chief exploration scientist at NASA.

“We are making data, tools, and results freely available,

and inviting the Artemis Accords partners to innovate with

us and share their data as well, accelerating our understanding

of lunar processes and laying the groundwork for human

space exploration for the Moon, Mars and beyond.”

The two recent workshops added to discussions led

by the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) in May,

when signatories first explored ways to advance open

data practices and created common ground for deeper

conversations on open data. NASA split its follow‑on discussion

about data sharing into two virtual sessions, so technical experts

around the world could take part.

The agency hosted its first session on open science principles

and implementation practices. It promoted interoperability

and collaboration among signatories and advanced reproducibility,

accessibility, and transparency in scientific work,

including in NASA’s Artemis program.

The second session focused on tools for open science,

providing Artemis Accords signatories with a working model

to reference as they build or refine their own data-sharing frameworks.

“NASA is committed to leading by example when it comes to

open science,” said Andrew Mitchell, deputy chief science data officer

for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, whose office

leads the agency’s open science efforts. “These workshops

gave our Artemis Accords partners practical tools

and a shared foundation to build on as we move forward together.”

NASA presented the Planetary Data System,

one of the agency’s primary archives for planetary science data,

openly available lunar data, data visualization and analysis tools,

and the system’s data information model standard,

offering a real-world example of how NASA structures,

curates, and shares scientific data with the world.

Across both sessions, NASA shared practices

developed over years of stewarding scientific data and

opened the floor to technical experts across the

Artemis Accords community, reflecting a deliberate

effort to build alignment at the working level.

“Advances in technology help enable open science,

but technology alone is insufficient,” said Mitchell.

“Open science requires a shift to a more transparent and

collaborative scientific process, which will increase

the pace and quality of scientific progress.

Scientific processes and results should be as open and

repeatable as possible to encourage further study.”

In 2020, NASA and the State Department joined

with seven other founding nations to establish the

Artemis Accords in response to the growing interest

in lunar activities by both governments and private companies.

They introduced the first set of practical principles aimed at enhancing

the safety and coordination between like-minded nations

as they explore the Moon, Mars, and beyond, committing nations to:

explore peaceably and transparently
render aid to those in need
enable access to scientific data
ensure activities do not interfere with those of others
preserve historically significant sites and artifacts
by developing best practices

By signing the Artemis Accords, nations open the

door to opportunities for future lunar exploration with NASA,

advancing humanity’s return to the Moon, and shaping the

Golden Age of space exploration and innovation.

But what are people drinking from that spring?

Some news is truthful and carefully verified. Other reports are exaggerated, distorted, or entirely false. Yet people eagerly await the next sensational story, particularly when it concerns the private lives of others. Behind every name, photograph, and headline, however, there is a human being—a person with feelings, a family, hopes, fears, and dignity.

A careless piece of writing can therefore become much more than “just news.” It can cause humiliation, anxiety, stress, and profound mental anguish to the person concerned. The individual may be young or old, famous or unknown. Words written in seconds can sometimes leave wounds that last a lifetime.

Recent reports concerning the death of a medical doctor at Badulla Hospital remind us of the seriousness of this issue. Whatever the circumstances, such incidents should prompt everyone who publishes on social media to pause and ask:

Have I checked the facts?

Is this information authentic?

Could my words harm an innocent person?

Am I informing people—or simply seeking attention?

In today’s world, countless news pages and rapidly expanding online channels appear every day, many seeking subscribers, views, and advertising revenue. Often, one source publishes a piece of information, and others copy it, add their own exaggerations, and circulate it across multiple platforms until speculation begins to resemble fact.

Of course, there are also responsible and reputable news organizations that place truth and the public interest above profit. They verify information, respect people’s dignity, and understand the responsibility that comes with having an audience. These are the voices we should value.

The tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales—an extraordinary woman who became a living legend—is an enduring reminder of the immense power and potential danger of the media. Her death remains deeply associated in the public imagination with the relentless pursuit of photographs and news.

We should therefore remember one simple principle:

Before you press “Publish,” think twice.

Think three times.

Check the facts.

Check the source.

And, above all, remember the human being behind the story.
