a 7,000-foot section of the urban stream was rechanneled to restore the natural meanders it had before it was straightened to reduce flooding. The result has been improved fish habitat - more undercuts along the stream bank, less silt on the bottom and more shoals and gravel bars for spawning.

A natural-growth wooded area running nearly one mile down Williams Creek in East Knoxville could become part of the James White Greenway that, as proposed, would run all the way to the Knoxville Botanical Gardens.

The wide asphalt sidewalk ending abruptly after the concrete tunnel is actually part of the First Creek Greenway, although photos of this section would have never made it into a Knoxville Greenways brochure. The tunnel was suicidally depressing—always lonesome, dark, and full of trash. Sometimes homeless people slept on the ledges under the bridge.

Third Creek Greenway - A portion of Third Creek Greenway will be closed all day on Wednesday, May 22nd, to allow for the replacement of a bridge near Painter Avenue off of Concord Street. The existing wooden bridge was washed approximately 20 feet downstream during flooding in 2011 and was temporarily reset until permanent provisions could be made. The new bridge will consist of concrete and steel, expected to better withstand future flooding conditions that occasionally occur along Third Creek during heavy rains. The route of the greenway will be slightly altered to avoid a steep hill that is in the current path to the existing wooden bridge. The path alteration will not change the greenway's mileage, but it will provide a more accessible route for greenway users. Westbound greenway users may detour the closure via the Concord Street entrance of Tyson Park by heading north on Concord Street, turning west onto Sutherland Avenue, and after approximately 0.75 miles, entering the Sutherland entrance of Third Creek Greenway.

TOWNSEND — Draft plans for a greenway that would connect Townsend with Maryville and Alcoa utilizes existing right of way along U.S. Highway 321 for almost its entire length and would require the acquisition of almost no private land.

6th Avenue Greenway Underpass Mural Project Starts June 8

It is partly funded through a challenge grant from the City's Parks and Recreation Department.

That section of 6th Avenue will be closed for the duration of the day. This Saturday's work will largely consist of priming the four panels.
