The weather cooperated Saturday encouraging an offensive onslaught between Knoxville and Huntsville in a fight for first place. Huntsville outpaced the Possums in the closing minutes to win 37-32 giving them the outright lead in the Central Pool of USA Rugby South.

Knoxville put points on the board early with a quick tap after a Huntsville penalty. Huntsville quickly answered back with (3) quick scores out wide with their quick backline. Strong forward play brought the Possums back within (7) points at halftime. Just after the half, Knoxville scored again with a try up the middle but failed to convert bringing the score to within (2) points. On the ensuing kick-off, Huntsville made use of poor possession by Knoxville and scored on a 30-m run. The Possums tried to keep pace scoring with little time left to bring the score to within (5) points, but in the end, Huntsville won with strong backline play and consistent conversion kicking.

While Huntsville has all but wrapped up first place, Knoxville is still strongly in the hunt for the second tournament spot. The Possums will travel twice to play both Atlanta squads.

Thanks to Art Reynold for hosting the after match social with chicken, beans, and bread. Also thanks to Cool Beans and Eagle Distributing for providing the drinks.

The game started slow as both teams tried to adjust to the mud. Knoxville scored first when a 5-m scrum was stolen and touched down. Another Knoxville try in transition play brought the score to 12-0.

If there was any question whether or not Chattanooga would break, it was certainly answered in the next 6 minutes as the home team scored twice in open play bringing the game to a tie. After halftime, both teams would battle for field position. In the end, the Knoxville forwards would secure the game, scoring tries off of a push over try and (2) inside crashes. Some new guys stepped up for us including John Brooks, Big Eric, Doc, and Fernando.

As always is the case between Chattanooga and Knoxville, a lively social event followed and later the Possum bus rolled back home.

The match between Knoxville and Montgomery was expected to be a hard hitting affair and it didn’t disappoint. The day was warm and dry. Knoxville put the first points (5) on the board in second phase, but Montgomery quickly countered with physical play from their forwards to make it 5-7. Montgomery suffered a yeloow card and a game ending injury, but managed to keep control of the first half scoring with seconds left to leave the halftime score at 5-12.

In the second half, Knoxville began to make sustained drives and scored out wide to bring the score to 10-12. Montgomery countered minutes later with a penalty kick (10-15). Despite educated kicking from Montgomery, Knoxville managed to score (2) more tries, advancing the score 22-15. Montgomery challenged the score with little time left on the clock with a deep flyhalf kick, but fortunately Knoxville covered and kicked the ball to touch and the win.

The test is sure to be a hard-hitting affair as both side like to play a forwards dominated game. Hope to see all out for the match. Game time temperatures will be in the mid 50’s. Both teams and spectators will socialize after the match with food and drinks at the pitch and then adjourn for a post social social down to Cool Beans Bar and Grill near campus.
