One of the things I love about writing software is seeing the end result. Websites are great for that with instant gratification as to how it affects users.

But there’s a whole new level of joy that I’ve experienced lately in interfacing with hardware.

There’s nothing quite like writing code to interact with hardware and seeing a physical action occur as a result of your code. It takes it to a whole new level.

I’m taking that step a little further. Ordered an Arduino starter kit and I’m looking to build something with it. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while but just haven’t taken the leap.

Finished building my computer, everything runs well.

Been on a little shopping spree. Finally picked up a shawl collar cardigan I’ve been wanting and it was on sale!
Also picked up a madras shirt from J. Crew but I can’t find any good pictures of it online. It’ll be good for when the warm weather arrives. It’s been cooler than I care for.

Started building a new computer, first one I’ve built since sometime in the mid to early 90s.

I think that makes me a noob again. I’ve been holding off on getting a new computer until closer towards the end of the year when the new SSDs were supposed to come out but Frys had an awesome deal on a processor/motherboard combo. I basically got the motherboard for free so I jumped on it and almost $800 later, my computer is almost done.

I booted it up for the first time yesterday, recognized everything, just need to install an OS and I should be good to go. I still need to redo the cabling, I’m awful at that kind of stuff but the case makes it pretty easy.

Stuff I got.

Antec P183

Core i5-750

Gigabyte P55a-UD3

4GB ram

Intel 80GB SSD

I already had a video card and power supply that I transferred over from my old machine. New machine should be blazing fast. It’ll be a good upgrade, old machine was about 4.5 years old already.

Waiting till the last seconds to bid on something. The anticipation of the seconds counting down and seeing if you’ve been outbid.

It’s also exciting selling something, watching bids, crafting your auction to get maximum exposure. I think I’m going to start selling more stuff on there.

Got the beta of Swype a couple of days ago for my G1 and I didn’t have huge hopes for it. Figured I would give it a try and then uninstall it.

I was pleasantly surprised, it’s really good! It’s fast, it’s easy to use. It’s the first time I’ve felt like maybe I could get used to typing on a touch screen keyboard and I’ve had my G1 for almost 1.5 years already.

I don’t think you can beat the tactile feel of a blackberry keyboard but Swype really brought up my typing speed on the G1 to a whole new level. It’s an amazing product and it actually makes me not hesitate to type out long responses on my phone.

There’s an old joke about two campers in the woods. They see a bear approaching and one guy starts putting on his running shoes. The other guy goes, what are you crazy? You can’t outrun a bear. The guy with the running shoes replies, I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you.

It’s a silly joke but there’s a story there that I’m starting to realize. I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun the other guy.

Too often, I don’t start or do things because I don’t believe I can be the best or I set my goals too high. But reaching a smaller goal is better than reaching no goal and sometimes, just out running the other guy is good enough.
