German Drowns in Rough Seas on Koh Phangan

SURAT THANI — A 46-year-old German tourist drowned after reportedly ignoring a rough seas warning yesterday on Koh Phangan.

The wife of the unidentified deceased said they traveled from their bungalow to Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach where her husband went to swim in the sea. Later she heard him shouting for help. The woman and hostel staff tried to save the man but the waves were nearly 2-meters high, making it impossible to rescue the man, according to police Lt. Amorn Sangthong.

She said the couple planned to return home Feb. 26.

Amorn said the German tourist was unconscious when he was pulled from the water. Rescue workers tried to resuscitate him with CPR and sent him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Amorn said red flags were posted along the beach to warn tourists about the dangerously strong currents. Witnesses said no one went swimming in the area Wednesday but the deceased.

A rip current, commonly referred to simply as a rip, or by the misnomer "rip tide", is one specific kind of water current that can be found near beaches. It is a strong, localized, and rather narrow current of water. It is strongest near the surface of the water, and it moves directly away from the shore, cutting through the lines of breaking waves.[1]

Rip currents can occur at any beach where there are breaking waves: on oceans, seas, and large lakes. The location of rip currents can be unpredictable: while some tend to recur always in the same place, others can appear and disappear suddenly at various locations near the beach.[2]

A rip current forms because breaking waves push water towards the land. Water that has been pushed up near the beach flows together (as feeder currents), and this water finds a place where it can flow back out to sea. The water then flows out at a right angle to the beach in a tight current called the "neck" of the rip, where the flow is most rapid. When the water in the rip current reaches outside of the lines of breaking waves, the flow loses power, and dissipates in what is known as the "head" of the rip. Sometimes tendrils of left-over current then actually curve back towards the shore.

Rip currents can be hazardous to people who are in the water. Swimmers or floaters who are caught in a rip and who do not understand what is going on, may not have the necessary water skills, may panic, or may exhaust themselves by trying to swim directly against the flow of water. Because of these factors, rips are the leading cause of rescues by lifeguards at beaches, and in the US rips are responsible for an average of 46 deaths from drowning each year.

A rip current is not the same thing as undertow, although some people use the latter term when they mean a rip current. Contrary to popular belief, neither rip nor undertow can pull a person vertically down and hold them under the water surface; A rip simply carries floating objects, including people, to an area outside the zone of the breaking waves.

Recognizing and identifying rips

There is a noticeable break in the pattern of the waves:

- the water often looks flat where the rip is, in contrast to the lines of breaking waves on either side of the rip.

- A "river" of foam: the surface of the rip sometimes looks foamy, because the water is churned up.

- Different color: the rip usually differs in color from the surrounding water; it is often more opaque, cloudier, or muddier, and so, depending on the angle of the sun, the rip may show as darker or lighter than the surrounding water.

- It is sometimes possible to see that foam or floating debris on the surface of the rip is moving out, away from the shore. In contrast, in the areas of breaking waves, floating objects are being pushed towards the shore.

Koh Samui offers a abundance of sports and leisure activities both on land and in the surrounding waters. Some visitors come to Samui solely to unwind, and lazing on the beach fits in perfectly with that plan. Others may have an entirely different agenda, with sport as their aim for a holiday full of activity. But no matter what their reasons are for visiting the island, Samui can provide activities to suit all its visitors.

If you’ve come for a relaxing holiday and have been lazing on the beach for a few days, but are now looking for something a bit more energetic to occupy some of your free time, then Samui can offer a variety of water sports. There’s the increasingly popular new water board sport of SUP, (Stand Up Paddle-boarding) which works on core strength and is a great way to surf the small waves of Samui. Then there’s kite-boarding which gives you the chance to actually fly above the waves. There are schools on the island offering courses in both sports.

Kayaking, meanwhile, is a gentler way to explore the waters and beaches around Samui, and the basics are very easy. There are also tours to nearby islands, the Angthong National Marine Park being the most popular and closest, if you fancy making a day of it. Under the water there’s lots of exploring to be done as well with snorkelling, diving, and the new craze of sea walking. Who knows you may be lucky and come across a dolphin or a whale shark – both are indigenous to the region.

If you’d prefer to get away from the beach and have a look inland, you can explore the jungle and the greenery of the island. If you ever fancied flying through the tree tops then you can do just that with zip-lining, or if you’ve ever wanted to ride an elephant then now is your chance. There are also jungle treks that take you up into the mountains where you can explore the wonderful waterfalls of the island and its rainforests. There are some amazing viewpoints with bird’s-eye views all the way down to the coast line. The elephant rides and treks certainly make for a fun family vacation.

For those that are more sport orientated or want to keep up with their work-outs, there are several gyms on the island, with the standard training machines, while many hotels have their own. Or if you’re interested, there are several Muay Thai training camps, which will give you the basics of the sport and a rigorous work-out. Yoga is extremely popular on Samui with a variety of types offered at the many schools on the island, so there is bound to be one that fits in with your level or preference. Some spas and hotels have their own yoga instructors whom you can hire for an hour or so for a private lesson. Some spas also offer classes on the beach if guests wish to participate. The ancient Korean martial art of Taekwondo is also proving to be extremely popular with children around the island and there are schools in most towns now.

Or perhaps you like dancing and would like a few lessons from a professional? You can find dance classes for both adults and children in such areas as salsa, tango, jazz-modern dance as well as contemporary, and there’s also ballet for children. You can also find salsa nights at dance clubs were you can just join in on the night and let your hair down.

When it comes to learning, many choose to spend a half day at a Thai cooking school in order to take a little taste of Thai cuisine home with them. It’s a great way to become familiar with Thai herbs, vegetables and fruits and the exotic combinations that make up the unique spiciness of Thai food.

Golf is a timelessly popular sport and for golfers. There are three courses to enjoy on the island, all set in the beautiful lush green landscape of the interior of the island. Or if you wish to just perfect that swing then there are also a couple of driving ranges.

Cycling is also popular and there are mountain bikes for rent around Samui. They can be a great way to see places that otherwise you’d miss, and you can trek into the interior of the island with its wonderful and lush scenery.

Or you can just cycle through the back streets and around the villages meeting local people and perhaps coming across a few hidden temples and shrines. For a more rugged form of biking there’s always quad biking.

If you have children you can take them go-karting, or bowling, or to a waterpark and keep them amused for a few hours, and who knows maybe you’ll find yourself joining in too. Or maybe you’d like to visit one of the local attractions that feature some of Thailand’s indigenous animals and birds as well as its marine life, reptiles, snakes and crocodiles?

Wat Plai Laem is a Buddhist temple on the resort island of Ko Samui, Thailand. Like the nearby Wat Phra Yai, or Big Buddha Temple, it is a modern temple created in recent times. Its main statue is not of Gautama Buddha but of Guanyin, the "goddess" of compassion and mercy. The statue is in Chinese style, with 18 arms, and though open-air located within an elaborate ubusot is on a platform-pavilion surrounded by the temple lake. The temple's design, though modern, incorporates elements of Chinese and Thai traditions and was in part designed by distinguished Thai artist Jarit Phumdonming. In addition to the main Guanyin statue, there is also a white laughing Buddha statue.

Opening Hours: Wat Plai Laem is open to visitors all day during daylight hours, and is particularly lively during Chinese festival events such as Chinese New Year.

Remarks: Since this is a sacred place, polite dress and conduct is a must. Be sure to wear shirts or scarves that cover the shoulders, trousers or long shorts, and avoid wearing beachwear. Worshippers often don white clothing when visiting the temple. Entry is free, but donations are welcome.

How to get there: To get to Wat Plai Laem, take the main route 4169 up to the northeast region of Samui, then turn off on route 4171. I were there at noon, the place very clean and systematic. The main Buddha statue very huge as its said. before talking about the Buddha statue, The road quite struggle because of rain. The stair up to top of place pavement very very hot!!! Cause it were noon LOL. Find the shadow to walk maybe safe your feet. Up there such a very good good view you can see the bay shore and town.

The way going to Big Buddha easiest is "Rod Song Taew"

Big Buddha Temple (or Wat Phra Yai, Wat = Temple, Phra = Buddha or Buddha Image, Yai = Big) located on Koh Samui Thailand. Ko Fan ia a sacared area of Suwannram Temple (or Wat Plai Laem) wich was used as a burial place for babies or young children younger 10 years old for a long time. Phra Kru Santi Nontakun later developed and decorated this area in 1970 by providing the monasteries and Dhamma practice places in the island. The consttruction of Phra Buddha Santi Teepanat or Big Buddha of Fan island was started since 1972, which is Buddha image in attitude of subding Mara with the lap width of 10 meters and 9 inches and 12 meters high. The staircas include 75 steps.
