The Kuttabul Commemoration Project is a non profit organisation.

Image 1:

The depot ship KUTTABUL, in water where it sunk. Often referred to incorrectly as H.M.A.S. Kuttabul, the vessel was not in fact commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy at the time of the Japanese midget submarine attack. The current naval base, HMAS Kuttabul has of course, been named in honour of this depot ship.

Other images are of the Japanese Submarine:

Trek 799 Is On The Track!

We were up bright and early to head down to the airport in time for the 6am flight to Popondetta only to be told the flight had been delayed until midday. So back home we went to wait for the 10am book in then back to the airport again.

The flight ended up getting away around 12:30pm. In Popondetta Russell Eroro was waiting with a hire car to pick up Shane and Meagan Sims to drive them up to Kokoda.

The earlier plan was to commence their walk after arriving in Kokoda and spend the night at Hoi Village area. However, I just heard that they arrived at our base Orohaven Kokoda Retreat around 5:30pm so no doubt they will end up spending the night there and walking off first thing tomorrow morning.

Photographs of Meagan will be posted later when Shane comes in off the track.

26th January 2012 - Australia Day

Happy Australia Day everyone from sunny PNG. Judging by the look of things in Australia, it will be a day of staying indoors as the rain continues to pour down. We started off the day with an early rise at 5am for a flight supposed to leave at 6am. When at the airport we were advised the flight had been rescheduled to midday so back home we came with a new book in time of 10:00am. Enjoy your day from all of us here in PNG

Neither Black Nor White ….. But ‘khaki’ – Private Frank Richard Archib

Private Frank Richard ARCHIBALD was born at Walcha, New South Wales on February 17th, 1915 to Frank and Sarah Archibald. One of 12 children; he would find himself fighting alongside his fellow Australians in many faraway places. However, law of the time said that he was not a citizen of Australia. To the broader population back home, he was a black man in a white man’s army. But to his mates on the front, he was neither black – nor white ….. he was ‘khaki’ like the rest of them. And Frank, like many other indigenous Australians would prove his worth on the battlefield and shed his life’s blood in service of his country.

The Archibald family today are well known in the Armidale area. They are direct descendants of Robert King, or King Bobby, a renowned Aboriginal leader at the time of colonisation.

Frank Richard Archibald lived in the Armidale-Walcha area until 1935 when the family moved to Burnt Bridge Mission, near Kempsey. The family moved to the Mission after welfare authorities threatened to remove their children. The government authorities promised that, if the family moved to the Mission, their children would not be taken.

Private Frank’s military service began during May of 1940 when he enlisted into the AIF at Kempsey at the age of 25. He was assigned to the 2/2nd Infantry Battalion which was part of the 16th Brigade. Frank’s younger brother, Ronald Archibald, and his uncle, Richard Archibald (Senior) signed up in Kempsey around the same time.

After training at Greta, Frank sailed from Sydney in August 1940.

PLEASE CLICK HERE to continue reading this article:

Trek 844 - Trek Completed

It was a quick trip down south for me as I returned yesterday on the same flight as our trekkers in readiness for their walk which commenced this morning. When I caught up with them earlier this morning there were smiles all round as they anticipated what lay ahead of them.

Everything went according to plan and we arrived at Owers' Corner a little after 8:30am. Trekkers sat around getting themselves ready, eating some food from their ration packs and taking in the atmosphere of the place.

Around 9:15am photographs were taken and by 9:30am they were walking down towards Goldie River,

On the way back down the hill the Kokoda Track Authority Ranger based at Owers' Corner hitched a ride with me. I asked if there was any other trekking company out on the track and he replied none that he was aware of.

So it would seem we will be the last trekking company on the track for 2011 and the first on the track for 2012 as they should celebrate in the New Year somewhere around the Naoro area. I had to think of something light so along with them are some party sticks that you light up so they can feel they have something to welcome in the New Year but doubt they will be awake and more than likely sleeping like babes at midnight on the 31st! Trekkers in this group include:

Micool Brooke; John MacLeod and Shane Double.

John and Shane are toughing it out and carrying their own packs! They looked a little hesitant as they walked off this morning but I am confident they can do it.

As for our boys, on the track with this group is Wallace Lemeki as their guide; Wayne Tihimi (Urina) the 2nd fastest man across the Kokoda Track in 18 hours 34 minutes; Trevor Jinga who had to cross rivers everyday to walk to school so is considered an expert when it comes river crossings by locals in Kokoda; along with two boys from Sairope Village who have been attending to the grounds of Orohaven for us.

They have a trekking system with them so if you would like to follow their progress, see below for the link.

Click Here to View the Trip

Even better, if you have a Facebook account, and with your permission, we can issue one or two social media up-date posts per day to your Facebook account using our tracking system. These posts will up-date their progress and let friends click back to the progress map. This is a great service our clients are now using. To utilise this service please click the following Facebook button. That will take you to a Facebook authorisation page at which point please click the Allow button.

Port Moresby has obviously received a lot of rain since I left so this morning I was expecting the road to be wet and slippery but as it turned out it was ok so a pleasant surprise. I do however, miss our 4WDriving but do not miss the wear and tear on our vehicles! as the saying goes, you can't have it both ways!

Remembrance Day, 11 November 2011

Remembrance Day (11 November) marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute silence at 11 am on 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month annually to recognise the 1918 German signing of the Armistice, which formally ended World Way I. Today also recognises the sacrifices of all armed forces and civilians in times of war. LEST WE FORGET

Trek 756 - Trek Completed

Our latest group of trekkers arrived in from Australia on the 1st November which we met and drove out to Bomana War Cemetery followed by a drive up 'Snake' Road to Sogeri Lodge where they spent the night and the next day exploring around the area. This included purchasing K35.00 worth of 'Buai' much to the delight of locals in the area.

A swim in a nearby creek and a few beers finished off the day which I have been informed was thoroughly enjoyed by all of them. On the morning of their trek it was arranged that they be collected around 8am and driven out to the drop off point of Owers' Corner. This went off like clockwork and I met up with everyone once again. On the drive out to the drop off point there was much laughter and conversation going on in the back of the vehicle that I knew this trek was going to be one of the best of the year as everyone new each other.

With the group of boys picked to walk with them, I know in advance that they are all going to have a great time walking, laughing, telling stories with the boys and enjoying their music. Corry it seems kicked off this trek in memory of his brother hence the name 'Ash's Gift'. Lets hope its a celebration of his life and that Corry, another brother and cousins along with one ring-in Esther, enjoy the experience.

Trekkers include:

Corry Kerr

Esther McConnell

Kane Maher

Wade Hannig

Lachlan Hannig

Kris Lowry

Nick Lowry

The photographs below were taken at the Sogeri Lodge before we departed for the starting point of their trek at Owers' Corner.

I met up with the following group of trekkers at Jackson's airport on the 27th October. Shortly after, we were on our way out to Bomana War Cemetery before up to Sogeri Lodge where they were to spend the night.

Mark Wilkinson had phoned earlier in the day to say he would have to postpone his flight to PNG from Cairns due to his backpack failing to arrive and that it would be arriving later in the afternoon and that he had arranged to fly in at 8:30 on the morning of the 28th.

This gave us some last minute changes but we managed to get the others away at the same time his flight was arriving in Port Moresby due to another staff member meeting his flight.

After getting the others away at Owers' Corner I drove back down and met up with Mark at Bomana War Cemetery and returned back up the mountain to drop him off at the archway at Owers' Corner.

Trekkers include:

Terry Robinson (back for his 2nd trek having walked with us in 2006); Mark Wilkinson; Ashley Adamson; Marcus Gilmore; Jason O'Donnell; Dean Pattison; Jason Cunningham and Stuart Cunningham.

All photographs taken have been posted on our 'Facebook' page and can be viewed by clicking on the following link:

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1...5970&type=1

This trek had a different beginning to most treks as two guys flew over to Popondetta on the 1st October to spend some time at Sanananda, Gona and Buna before walking the Kokoda Track. During to course of the day yesterday they were driven up to Kokoda where they spent the night at Orohaven Kokoda Retreat.

This morning they were up bright and early for a 6:30am start and together with our Kokoda Trekking staff commenced their walk towards Isurava Village where they are spending the night.

The two trekkers are as follows:

Jason Cooke

John Liburti

I spoke with Jason earlier tonight and he said they are doing ok but that they would like to finish on the 12th October instead of the 11th October as per the original date on the trekking schedule. I explained if they wanted to do this, we would walk food into them for the last night and that all was ok to do this should they choose that option.

Unfortunately as they commenced their trek at the other end, ie KOKODA, I do not have any photographs to share with you. This morning they would have passed through the arches below as they commenced their walk.

The archway was built by the Kokoda Memorial Foundation. In the photograph below represents our first group to finish under the archway.

The plaque is just one of many placed on the archway.

Trek 708 - Trek Completed

This group left Owers' Corner earlier today bound for Kokoda but not before we experienced a few hickups. Two trekkers missed their flight to PNG! End result was that they managed to find another flight out of Cairns that arrived here in PNG at 7:30am. So the plan last night changed from an early start this morning so we could wait and meet these trekkers to drive them up to Sogeri. Two trekkers decided to stay in town at the Gateway Hotel. After we met with the two trekkers, the other two were picked up and not too long afterwards, we were heading to Sogeri Lodge.

On arrival, Kane Mifsud looked relieved to meet up with his brother and well Christian Gurry was just pleased to be still walking I think judging by the look on his face earlier this morning.

After arriving at Sogeri Lodge, trekkers started getting organised to move off and we were soon ready to move but not before a group photograph was taken of the group who include:

Rachael Reimers

Matthew Reimers

Renee Roberts

William O'Donnell

Kelly Freeman

Pamela Bennington

Annie Lydon

Tony Lydon

Celene Black

Justin Owers

Ryan Mifsud

Kane Mifsud

David King

Sarah Addison

Christian Gurry

Matt Backshall

The photograph below was taken minutes before the bus departed from Sogeri Lodge:

Our first all Asian trek is now on the track walking from Owers' Corner to Kokoda and boy did they look happy. Yesterday when I met up with them at Jackson's airport, one poor guy was missing his backpack as it did not make the connection and was still in Australia. Can you imagine for a minute what that must have felt like.

However, as he took our advice and was wearing his boots and starting from this end, I instructed him that he proceed with the rest of his team and that his bag plays catch up with a runner we would engage to take it into him. Trekkers in this group include:

Mickey Lay

Steve Tu

Jeremy Lay

Mark Hua

Cameron HA

The photograph below was taken outside the Sogeri Lodge aroun 9:30am. The guy on the right is the one who lost his pack but he did not let it dampen his spirit and was smiling so wildly it reminded me why I run trekking tours, to see happy faces like these guys about to experience something that will stay with them forever:

Close on 5pm three trekkers emerged from the International Terminal building and did a tour of Port Moresby with me before heading back to the airport to pick up James McAuley who arrived on the 6pm flight from Cairns. The flight must have arrived early as when we arrived at 6:10 he was already outside patiently waiting for us. We then drove up to Sogeri Lodge where they spent the night.

This morning they had breakfast and we headed out to Owers' Corner for the drop off.
Unfortunately due to the race, this trek ended up flying out to Kokoda around 11:30am this morning. Today we had the Kokoda Challenge Race to get away at Owers' Corner along with another trek heading out from there. We arrived back at Sogeri Lodge area when I had to update the websites, pack last minute items and head down to Port Moresby. This trek had to walk up to Isurava after landing for their first overnight on the track: Trekkers in this trek include:

Chris Tidswell

Rachel Kurenda

Stephen Mace

Daniel Pittam

Due to our race these group of trekkers had an earlier start today then we would normally have had. However, they were all up on time, packed, ready to go when the bus drove them out to Owers' Corner around 5:30am this morning. In this group is a young boy by the name of Harrison walking alonside his mum and boy was he all smiles when we met up with him. From memory I think he said he is 15 years old and it was it seems his idea to walk the track. Trekkers in this group include:

Andrez Kowalczyk

Terry Kirkman

Mark Quealey

Danny Kwon

Angela Bolton-McCarty

Harrison Bolton

This morning 30 competitors lined up to contest this year's Kokoda Challenge Race. Brendan Buka is the hot favourite once again to win this year's race. Before the start one guy came forward and withdrew saying he was not feeling too well, another guy missed the start and commenced his race some 30 minutes after the rest due to a night on the town.

Unfortunately the start was delayed some 7 minutes until we were already and lined up and the boys were off down the first hill towards Goldie River.

We have had an update at Imita Ridge and the leaders at that stage were, Brendan Buka, Luana Nagas, Samson Joheri, and the two Yauga brothers, Andrew and Horace closely followed by the others in the race. I have to go off to Port Moresby to get the flight away to Kokoda

Updates at Naoro:

1st Brendan Buka

2nd Moses Buka

3rd Samson Joheri

4th Andrew Yauga

5th Ramsi Idau

6th Horace Yauga

7th Luana Nagas

8th Jessie Aire

9th Wayne Urina Tihimi

10th Banny Buka

If your out and about and wish to stay updated on the Kokoda Challenge Race in Papua New guinea then why not download our Kokoda Trekking Iphone Application Application.

We will continue to update on facebook, www.kokodatrail.com website, and our Iphone application until all contestants are finished!

URL : http://itunes.com/apps/KokodaTrekking

Trek 742 - Trek Completed

This morning we were up bright and early for another drop off at Owers' Corner. A slight hickup with this group as one of the trekkers sons got to the airport in Cairns and realised he left his passport behind in WA. Hopefully all going well his passport will be couriered in time for him to catch today's flight to Port Moresby. He will then head out to Owers' Corner and hopefully catch up with the group either later today or tomorrow morning. Trekkers in this group include:

Ross Prout

David Prout

Duncan Hale

Rob Sharp

Tony Taylor

James Hayman

Matt Hagias

Mark Hayman

Neil Taylor

Lloyd Heinrich

Rick Heinrich

David Prout is missing from this photograph as when he turned up at the airport in Cairns to catch his flight to PNG found out his passport was missing. He has apparently had it sent by courier to Cairns and will arrive this afternoon and will play catch up later today.

Fastest Crossing Of The Kokoda Track / Kokoda Trail

As a lead up to our race across the track on the 27th August2011 commencing at 7am, I thought I would give you some background information about past Kokoda Challenge races.

2005

Our inaugural race of 27 August 2005 was won by John Hunt Hiviki, who completed it in 22:01:14 smashing the previous record held by Brian Freeman in a time of 24:59:26 set on the 30th August 2004. Prior to that, Osborne Bogajiwai held the record for over 15 years. In the 2005 race Osborne entered the race to get back his title from Brian Freeman but a porter by the name of John Hunt Hivik had other ideas and snatched it from him.

When interviewed by the local TV station EMTV John was asked what he ate to give him energy to win, he replied, three scones which he soaked in the river, a piece of Highway Biscuit and water including three bananas offered by kind villagers in Nauro kept him going for whole 22 hours until he reached the finish line.

And as for his barefoot; Hunt explained: I had a pair of runners on when the race started at Kokoda, when I got to Templeton's 2, I threw them away as they were full of mud which slowed me down a bit. My runners I discarded at Nauro, and decided to run barefoot all the way towards Owers' Corner.

Results of the top runners are listed below:

1st - John Hunt Hiviki - 22:01:14
2nd - Osborne Bogajiwai - 22:45:34
3rd - Tom Hango - 23:34:46
4th - Bernard Aruo - 24:08:46
5th - Andrew (Andy) Rowan - 24:15:21 - New Zealand
6th - Russell Gurisa - 28:32:21
7th - Abel Arari - 29:05:22
8th - Rod Ori - 29:36:52 (injured - struggled home)
9th - Wayne Urina Tihimi - 30:08:12 (injured struggled home)

In the same race, Andrew (Andy) Rowan a doctor from New Zealand became the fastest international breaking Brian Freeman's record. His time 24:15:21

Osborne Bogajiwai was gracious in defeat and showed great sportsmanship seen here being interviewed by EMTV shortly after finishing his gruelling 96km race.

This morning we said goodbye to trek 700 when they left Owers' Corner to head down to Ua'Ule Creek to spend the night. Trekkers in this group include two doctors:

1. Dr. Jacqueline Marks
2. Dr. Matthew Rowe
3. David Cameron

There was supposed to be three brothers also on this trek but at the last minute pulled out due to one of them falling ill and the other two brothers not wanting to walk without him.

The remaining three booked on this trek can be seen in the photographs below minutes before leaving Sogeri Lodge

Kokoda Wallaby - Book on sale about his life.

I would like to introduce to you a new book written by Andrew James in relation to Stan Bisset. I had the pleasure of meeting this delightful man when Stan and his wife Gloria invited myself, Russell Eroro and Eric Uwea to meet with him at his home on the Sunshine Coast. What an inspirational meeting it was, and one I shall never ever forget. I just love the title of this book, Kokoda Wallaby as it was with great pride he took us into a private room downstairs where he kept all kinds of things such as his beloved Wallaby Hat.

Stan asked the PNG guys to try it on for size and with gusto they took the lead and placed it on their own head. On his wall were many photographs of trekking groups many of which we recognised as group photographs of some of our treks. He also mentioned a doctors name who had walked with us and said they regularly wrote to each other. This in itself was of interest as this young man came to PNG to walk the track for a personal challenge and whilst doing so, found the history and became good friends with the legendary Stan Bisset. What a man, what an inspiration to us all!

Please purchase this book as a tribute to a truly 'Great Australian'. Well done Andrew!

Colin, Sue And Adam Kincross

It was with sadness but also joy that today I met again the Kincross family who tragically lost their only daughter in the plane crash on the 11th August, 2010.

Some family members will be at a service to be held at the Australian High Commission premises but for the Kincross family the place they wanted to be was at the area where their daughter Hannah lost her life, Haila Village on the outskirts of Kokoda.

This time last year we met with several family members of victims who lost their lives along with Lady Carol Kidu who accompanied them on a walk up to the crash site. This time they will walk by themselves along with our staff and the councillor of Haila Village and other porters also from that village.

Russell Eroro also lost his eldest brother in the crash and his widow will walk up and meet with them on the morning of the 11th August at Haila and will walk with them to the crash site.

After spending time with them last year, I felt immediately at ease with this family and my heart once again goes out to them for the loss of their daughter.

The Kincross family also sponsor some students through a scholarship set up with the Kokoda Track Authority so no doubt may pop into the school on their way back to our base Orohaven Kokoda Retreat.

The plan this time is for them to spend the night at Orohaven tomorrow night. The following day they will walk up to Isurava Memorial area to overnight. The following day around to Alola and then make their way to Haila Village. The next day they will walk up to the crash site before walking down to Kanandara Village for the night. The day after they will walk to Rusty's family block to spend time with their family and the night. On the 12th they will overnight at Orohaven again before flying back into Port Moresby on our charter.

On the 11th August join with us in mourning the tragic loss of lives of those who perished in the Airlines PNG twin otter flight.

Today we met with our latest trekker Joshua Mario who flew in from Brisbane to walk the track to celebrate his 21st birthday! Everyone looked excited and ready for the challenge that lay ahead. Trekkers in this group include:

Ian Dall

Steven Wilson

John Stroud

David Russell

Melissa Hawkins

Annette Hawkins

Jurgen van Herk

Stuart Bowditch

Brett Mills

Arjun Iyer

Ben Howes

Adam Wood

The photographs below were taken shortly before they boarded the bus that would drive them to Owers' Corner and of course inside the bus once they were all seated....now do they look like a HAPPY bunch of TREKKERS, or WHAT ? ? ?

At Port Moresby International airport the first to arrive ws Robin Farrington who was due to commence his trek on the 20th July however whilst waiting and talking to other trekkers it was soon apparent that he would join trek 765 commencing a day earlier then the trek he had initially booked. Therefore instead of a group of 7, they soon became a group of 8. Trekkers are made up as follows:

John McMillan

John's sons, James and Lachlan McMillan

Jim Hunt and his daughter Amy and son Ryan

Kylie Cook

Robin Farrington

Before we departed we took a shot of the group outside the Sogeri Lodge.

Last night was spent at Naoro Village and today they will either reach Menari or go further and stop at Efogi depending on how the trekkers are going.

Trekkers in this group walking with my son Shane Thomas are:

Derek Ingram

Drazen Gvozdich

Before driving off from Sogeri Lodge Drazen started his movie camera to capture the moment.

The photograph below was taken outside the Sogeri Lodge shortly before the drive out to the drop off point of Owers' Corner.

Trek 734 - Trek Completed

This morning we were up bright and early in preparation for our trek heading out today from Owers' Corner. Our staff cooked a huge breakfast for themselves for the day that awaits them. Tarina their guide has been in Port Moresby these past few weeks working on a small house we are presently renovating. One of the food porters joked with him that he has put on weight so life in the big smoke but be ok.

So this morning Tarina left Owers' Corner hoping his extra weight would not be a problem as he takes on another walk across the Kokoda trail with two American's and one guy from England. Would you believe all THREE are doctors! So no problems on this trek I feel as they all looked well prepared although one guy hoped he did not have any problems with his kness.

Trekkers are as follows:

1. Seth Wright
2. John Proctor
3. Nick Abbott

Trekkers got away as planned on the 2nd July for their trek that commenced at Owers' Corner. All sounded very HAPPY and full of life as I talked with them. As they all knew each other, they appeared as though they would really have a great time out on the Kokoda Track. Their guide is John Derick Eroro who has walked so many times he has stopped counting. Trekkers include:

Shane Tucker

Barry Haynes

Mark and Anne Elliott

Barrie Blank and Jane Blank

Shane Ball

Michael Lange

Four trekkers flew over to Popondetta and drove by road up to Kokoda where they spent the night as our guests at Orohaven Kokoda Retreat. This morning they were up bright and early for their first day's walk up to Isurava Village. I am led to believe they got away around 6am and reached their destination shortly after 1pm. All trekkers apparently did really well walking up test mountain and did themselves proud. Trekkers on this trek include:

Derek Price - walking with Dudley Bubura as his personal porter

Jeanette Palumbo whose personal porter is Jimmy Buka, brother of the trek champion Brendan Buka

Aaron Uebergang - carrying their own pack.

Peter Uebergang - walking alongside Sylvester Tibo

The guide on this trek is Ernst Jinga.

This morning we said goodbye to our latest group to hit the track comprising of a group of mates; a father and two daughters, a woman walking on her own after her friend had to pull out at the last minute, a tafe teacher and a young woman who booked and came to walk on her own choosing to hire the trek champion, Brendan Buka as her porter. Trekkers in this group include:

Darren Watts, who has our practical joker Hobert Keke as his personal porter.

James McEniry - carrying his own pack.

Stephen Machar who has Horace Yauga - a 20 hour runner as his porter.

Yohan Amerasekera whose porter Jenen Barai almost won our race one year until he hurt himself

Simon DiNunzio - who is accompanied by Wayne Urina (Tihimi) who has been the runner up to Brendan Buka twice.

Dianne Young who is walking with Jeffrey Boropi - our dreadlock guy who has a style all of his own!

Roderick (Ian) McLeod who has Paul Esiko - a councillor from a village in Kokoda as his personal porter.

Heather McLeod - has another runner Jessie Aire as her porter who came 3rd in our last race in under 21 hours

Jasmine McLeod - has Clive Govero as her porter. Clive is not the fastest of our boys but is one of the most experienced.

Alisha King is walking with Brendan Buka who she requested as her personal porter. Brendan is without doubt the track legend holding the track record in both directions. Kokoda to Owers' Corner in 17 hours 20 minutes and in the direction they are walking a remarkable, 16 hours 34 mintues.

Barry Roy who is walking with Johnsford Eroro a very experienced porter.

After meeting up with the trekkers who arrived on the 1:15 pm flight, this group photograph was taken at Bomana War Cemetery.

At 4:30pm Barry Roy arrived and was also driven to Bomana War Cemetery.

If you wish to view on facebook all the photographs taken earlier today, please click on the following link:

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1...57.374403025970

It was a busy day yesterday as we met our latest group of trekkers. Tamara Franklin flew in from Singapore around 8am and hung out with us during the day whilst we waited for Ben Huff and Graeme Guilford to arrive on the 4pm flight. At the airport Darren Lindow and Stephen Murray introduced themselves after having arrived the previous day. When Shane their guide arrived close on 5pm from Cairns we drove off to Bomana War Cemetery and then later arrived at Sogeri Lodge just on dark.

After booking into Sogeri Lodge they decided to drive down the hill to the Kokoda Trail Hotel to eat before going back up to the lodge to spend the night.

This morning our staff were driven out to Owers' Corner about 6am to prepare for their trekkers to arrive later in the morning. Trekkers had a slightly later start and were picked up close on 8am. Before we drove off from the Sogeri Lodge, we took a minute to capture the moment with a group photograph.

Trek 782 - Trek aborted.

I had the pleasure of meeting our latest trekker Lionel Jardine yesterday when I picked him up from the airport. Lionel who is retired set himself a goal of riding his bike from Brisbane to Cairns before coming to PNG to commence his trek across the Kokoda Track.

It seems he has walked the track before so knows what preparation he needed to complete a successful trek. What makes Lionel different however, is that he intends to walk over to Kokoda from Owers' Corner and then spend a couple of days resting there before he turns around and walks back to Owers' Corner on the 21st or 22nd May depending on how much rest he needs at the other end.

After driving around with him yesterday I could sense his determination to do what he set out to do.

It was decided to pick him up at 6:15am this morning and head out to the drop off point at Owers' Corner. Everything went ahead as planned.

We were all up bright and early yesterday to drive out to Owers' Corner our latest group of trekkers. When we arrived at the drop off point there was lots of talk as they joked, well we might just hop back in the car and go back home - this was after they saw their first glimpse of the hills! However, the joked and got ready to walk down their first descent and we snapped various photographs. This trek is lead by Trevor Jinga. At Owers' Corner the first lot of photographs was with their personal porters. Trekkers in this group include four family members and a ring-in from Brisbane.

Ken White

Hugh Doggett

Don White

Emma Robertson

Clinton Smeaton

Anzac Day - Bomana War Cemetery

On the 25th April ourselves and our trekkers were up bright and early for the drive to Bomana War Cemetery to attend this year's Anzac Day Service. This year there appeared to be a large crowd who attended as it fell on a day off for the general working public of Port Moresby which was good to see.

Also a big turn out this year of trekking companies compared to a couple of years ago when the road from Owers' Corner to Sogeri saw a lot of buses bogged, thus not everyone making it to the service at Bomana.

After the service, our trekkers attended the 'Gunfire' breakfast which was held at the Australian High Commission.

Trek 744 - Trek Completed

We met up with this group of trekkers when they flew in to Port Moresby airport and were driven up to Sogeri Lodge where they stayed the night. The following morning they were driven down to Bomana War Cemetery and on to the Australian High Commission for the annual 'Gunfire' breakfast. Later in the morning we all drove back up the mountain to Sogeri Lodge where they along with our guide and porters prepared to move out on to the Kokoda Track.

We aimed for a midday start from Sogeri and we were pretty much on target as we drove off heading for the road that would lead us to Owers' Corner. On the way we stopped off at McDonald's Corner where a photograph was taken of the group as they posed beside 'Fred' - a tribute to the 39th!

Anzac Treks On The Go - Treks all completed.

This week has been very hectic as with the lead up to the trekking season which commenced for us this week on the 16th April when we said goodbye to three treks that headed out from Owers' Corner. The guides decided amongst themselves that they wanted to leave one by one instead of all at once due mainly to the congestion of the track this time of year. With smaller trek numbers they can prettymuch camp anywhere. Once this was established we decided to move the first group off at 7:30 and come back and forth from Owers' Corner to Sogeri until all were on the track.

The first group on the track was Ernst Jinga - trek 715 with a group of young lads from Townsville:

Chris Griffin

Bradley Turner

John Mitchell

Harley Acree

David Acree

Trekkers stayed at Alola last night, and were heading to Deniki today.

They may even decide to walk straight to Kokoda a day early, as it is only 2 and a half hours further on.

All are doing well.

Tonight they could be eating pizza at Orohaven over a few local beers.

Wallace Lemeki One Of Our Guides Looses His Beautiful Baby Boy!

This morning I received a text message from Wallace Lemeki saying they lost their beautiful baby boy last Tuesday following a short illness at Popondetta Hospital.

In December, Wallace paid me a visit at Orohaven Kokoda Retreat. I asked him to bring along his baby for me to see and he replied that he was not feeling well and that he was still at home with his wife Linda. I suggested he take my camera with him so he could take some family photographs before they go to church on Xmas Day.

This he did and later he gave me back the camera. In his text message today he asked if I had deleted these photographs, if not could I print them off for him as he did not have any photographs of his child due to not owning a camera.

I obviously still have them on file and will make sure they are printed off and given to him and Linda.

Our heart goes out to Wallace and his family as he does not deserve this. During the off season he has worked hard to build up his trade store business, finish off his house and take care of his family.

Latest News From Kokoda Track Authority

The year ahead: 2011 activities
2011 promises to be a momentous year along the Kokoda Track with plans for improvements to the Track and KTA, new initiatives and with a bit of luck - improved numbers.  Some of the new innovations include;

• A new (PNG National) KTA Chief Executive is expected to be announced in February (Rod Hillman will stay on until the end of this year).

• Kokoda Station will have a Ranger’s Office and House built in the town (opposite the Post Office) with a senior KTA officer based there.

• A consultancy will be advertised shortly to develop Guesthouse and Trekker Toilet standards plus a guesthouse booking system.

• Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel Day celebrations will build on last year’s successes, 3rd November.

• A web-based online trek permit system is under development and is expected to “go live” in July.

• Delivery of subsidised Wilderness First Aid course for trekking guides.

• Completion of the Owers Corner road upgrade (March)

• Kokoda Airstrip Terminal and Office constructed (July)

Photo credit: Rawena Russell and Volker Scholz

Tour Operator Forums – Pre-Season
Scheduled dates for our 2011 pre-season Tour Operator forums;

PORT MORESBY - MONDAY, 21 MARCH 2011

BRISBANE - FRIDAY, 25 MARCH 2011

Last year’s end of season forum in Brisbane didn’t attract sufficient numbers to fully justify the event. Please RSVP to permits@kokodatrackauthority.org if you wish to attend the Brisbane Forum so we can determine if there is enough interest to continue the Australian based forums. Your views are welcome.
New Village Accounts
KTA has taken a new approach in track maintenance payments to villages by opening new Village based bank accounts. The villages, with the help of KTA, have created standardised accounts with PNG Microfinance Bank Ltd that are easier to use than traditional bank accounts.

Management Track Dates
The KTA will undertake a management trek on the 24 February 2011 from Kokoda to Owers Corner. The trek will include a thorough assessment of the Track 's condition before the season commences and undertake any immediate works required.

Track Conservation Program
Track Conservation works will be undertaken at Maguli Ridge, Imita Ridge and Ofi Creek before June focusing on improving safety whilst building on the jungle like trekking experience. Details will be discussed at the Operator Forums, after the management trek.

Kokoda Rangers at Booderee National Park
KTA Rangers Donald Siga, Joe Dhube and Elizah Peter with counterpart Operations Manager Michael O'Kave, visited Booderee National Park in Australia from 9 - 21 January for a training program aimed at sharing skills in park management, visitor management and track maintenance.

The initiative, promoted by the KTA with the support of the Australian government, aims to provide the rangers with further expertise, which would assist them in protecting and maintaining the Kokoda Track.

Counterpart Operations Manager, Michael O’Kave said, “We learnt techniques in GPS mapping, operated fauna cameras to capture and record data, used advanced technology for pest control and learnt skills in waterway clearance to maintain the tracks.”

For Rangers Joe and Elizah it was their first opportunity to travel overseas. “It was a dream come true – the experience was totally different to our country. As part of our work experience we identified and monitored marine wildlife and it was the first time for me to see dolphins, seals and penguins,” Ranger Joe said.

Booderee National Park provides a similar model to Kokoda in terms of community involvement in protected area management. The park is jointly managed between Parks Australia and the local indigenous community. Ranger Elizah said it was interesting to exchange cultural views on land issues. “We met with Aboriginal landowners to learn about their culture, how their communities come together and work in the Park."

KTA Chief Executive Rod Hillman said the exchange was invaluable. “This allows Kokoda Rangers to continually improve the safety and trekking experience along the Track, for trekkers and local communities."

The experience has encouraged the Rangers to take back their new skills and knowledge to the village. “What I’ve learnt can improve myself and my community,” said Ranger Elizah.

Photo: Rangers with The Hon Tony Burke MP, Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.

Safety Package Updates
• Owers’ Corner Road is accessible for all-weather 2WDs.

• Kokoda Terminal. Earthworks for the access road, terminal, carpark and apron area completed. Design for terminal complex almost complete.

• Safer Creek Crossings at Eora Creek, Templeton's and Elome Creek have been agreed as priorities, and initial investigations complete at Eora and Templeton's. A detailed investigation will be carried out during the management trek, 24 February 2011.

• Wilderness First Aid Training for those who have completed the basic first aid training is being organised for around April 2011.

Livelihoods Pilot Project
Pilots 1 and 2 activities are near to completion with the final field trip underway this week to Isurava and Alola. Vegetable farming will take place in Alola community with some of their vegetable seedlings such as broccoli, rice and beans transplanted from nursery to the fields. Chickens and ducks will be taken to Isurava as the community continue training in livestock raising.

This year, the Livelihoods Pilot Project for Pilots 3 and 4 will focus more on encouraging communities to benefit more specifically from the trekking market and will be open to representatives from all communities along the Kokoda Track. Communities along the Track will participate in basic business and technical skills training which will be held at three accessible locations; Kokoda, Efogi and Sogeri between March and July 2011. The training of community mentors will ensure support is provided to the community groups in project planning.

KTA have sent Request for Quotations to training providers seeking submissions by February 14, 2011.

You will be contacted shortly regarding your feedback and advice on prospective community business ideas and trekking market opportunities.

The Livelihoods project is part of the joint PNG-Australia Kokoda Initiative, which supports the sustainable development of the Owen Stanley Ranges, Brown River Catchment and Kokoda Track region.

Orohaven Kokoda Retreat - Attention All Trekking Companies

Due to the actions of two reputable trekkings companies, no trekkers from other companies will be accepted at Orohaven Kokoda Retreat without payment having been paid in advance.

Two prominant trekking companies have had several treks stay at Orohaven Kokoda Retreat throughout the 2010 trekking season but as at the date of writing no payment has been received whatsoever despite a promise in October that settlement would be made. Unfortunately it gives Australian's a bad name and makes me feel ashamed when the subject is mentioned by Russell Eroro and other staff in Kokoda.

We can only live in hope that their clients and guides appreciated the services offered including the use of our huts and amenities and that one day the amount in question will be settled. As my daughter pointed out today, backpacker's accommodation is considered the cheapest in Australia and on average is $35.00 per night or more depending on where you choose to stay. Orohaven Kokoda Retreat is $25.00 per night so we are not talking sheep stations. Some of you reading this may think its trivial but having spent many years trying my best to insist on honesty and integrity among our PNG staff, its hard to explain this situation regarding my fellow Australian's who should know better.

Bus Ran Off The Road At Owers' Corner

This morning when we drove down the last hill leading towards the bottom of Owers' Corner we were met with a strange sight when we noticed that a bus must have skidded off the road recently. It was sitting down the hill at the back of the police house area looking back towards the road. Have no idea how and when it got there, but certainly grabbed our eye as we drove into Owers' Corner.

After our trekkers had headed off down the hill towards Goldie River, I went and took some photographs which I will post here now.

Right at the bottom of that road its quite slippery when wet just like it used to be all over the previous road before they graded and put stones on the road. Now even the stones themselves can cause an accident if you were to get into a skid. Several weeks ago one trekking company's hired bus did exactly that, skidded off the road. No-one was hurt but for people not experienced driving on this kind of road or who have tyres that need to be replaced could easily slip off.

In fact what used to be a wet slippery 4WD road and a slow trip to or from Owers' is now turning into an easy drive trip. It now resembles a super highway (well ok not quite) but compared to what we have been used to, a huge improvement! Thanks Australia for this JV with the PNG Government to fix the road.

When of WHEN, will you approve fixing the road from KOKODA to POPONDETTA ?????

Remembrance Day - 11th November 2011

Remembrance Day in Australia is dedicated to Australians who died as a result of war, particularly from World War I onwards. A minute of silence is dedicated to the deceased, especially for soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation. Remembrance Day is annually observed on November 11 although it is not a public holiday.

Lest we Forget

Trek 746 - Trek Completed

Stephen McCarthy and Klaus Wilde arrived in Port Moresby yesterday and headed off to the Crowne Plaza Hotel where we met up with them later in the afternoon in the bar area enjoying a quiet drink or two. When I told them about their early flight they looked like oh no, we will have to hit the sack earlier then expected.

This morning they were supposed to arrive around 4:40am too book in but turned up about 5:15 so perhaps had a good time last night after all. I asked for their paper work and Klaus no matter how hard he looked could not find it. About this time it was apparent he appreciated his partner back home who he indicated takes care of such things for him. He also mentioned his office so can only assume he has a good 'PA' on hand there to keep him organised.

All jokes aside, they were as happy as Larry this morning as they looked forward to their new adventure of walking the track. They have set themselves a cracking pace wanting to walk it 4 nights 5 days but certainly look fit enough for the task that awaits them. Stephen spoke like he had already done a bit of walking in his time so no doubt will have some idea of what challenge awaits them on the hills of Kokoda.

As I type this, they have been collected from Guria airport in Popondetta and are on their way to Kokoda. If they feel ok they will commence their walk today. If feeling sleepy from their early start, they will spend the day relaxing at our base Orohaven Kokoda Retreat and will start their walk tomorrow. Will keep you informed when I hear later in the day their decision.

Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels Day Commemorated At Kokoda

Media release: VA057 - Wednesday 3 November 2010 - VA057

The significant contribution of Papua New Guinean “Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels” during the Second World War has been acknowledged today in Kokoda at a medallion ceremony.

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon was represented at the ceremony by Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, His Excellency Ian Kemish AM, who presented commemorative medallions to six recipients.

Mr Snowdon said Australians will be forever indebted to the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels.

“They provided invaluable assistance to Australians during the Second World War—carrying supplies, contributing to the building of bases, airfields and other wartime infrastructure and most notably, evacuating the sick and wounded through some of the most hostile terrain ever encountered in modern warfare,” Mr Snowdon said.

Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels’ Day was established in 2009 and Mr Snowdon said this year’s inaugural ceremony provides an opportunity to mark the involvement of a special group of people who continue to be respected and honoured.

The medallion ceremony was held on 3 November because the date is significant for Australians and Papua New Guineans alike.

“November the 3rd marks the day on which the Australian flag was raised above a newly reoccupied Kokoda village after months of fighting along the track which bears the village’s name.

“The Kokoda campaign began when Australians of the 39th Militia Battalion and members of the Pacific Islands Regiment encountered Japanese troops near Awala on 23 July 1942. For the next three months the Australians conducted a fighting withdrawal to their last line of defence on Imita Ridge near Port Moresby.

“At this point the Australians, now bolstered with reinforcements, rallied and after a number of fierce engagements they were able to push the Japanese back along the track. Kokoda was recaptured on 2 November and the following day on 3 November 1942, the Australian flag was raised above the village at a service to symbolise the turning of the tide in Papua,” Mr Snowdon said.

The commemorative medallion was announced in April last year and features the image of a blinded and barefoot Private George Whittington being helped along by Raphael Oimbari. The image came from a photograph taken on Christmas Day 1942 near Buna on the PNG north coast.

Medallions are available to surviving Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels and the widows of Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, and the Australian Government is still seeking to ensure all surviving Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels are honoured. For more information contact the Department of Veterans’ Affairs on 02 6289 6136.

Audio grabs of the Minister and an image of the medallion are available for download from www.dva.gov.au/media

Media inquiries: Minister Snowdon: Alice Plate 0400 045 999

Department of Veterans’ Affairs media: 02 6289 6203

Kokoda Archway delayed until a later date, stay tuned!

Work has commenced on the new archway to be erected at the hospital area in KOKODA. Yesterday, all trek operators received an alert from the Kokoda Track Authority asking for us to comment. As far as ourselves at Kokoda Trekking are concerned, we feel its a plus for everyone. Trekkers and the people of the Oro Province will benefit from this as sadly they have been missed out. When the KTA proclamation was set up it only included the Biaga people or those living on the track. Now there is something for the Kokoda people to be proud of, an archway in Kokoda!

Kokoda Trekking would like to know trekkers comments on the proposed archway. Would you like an ARCHWAY at KOKODA similar to the one at Owers' Corner?

For those of you who do not know about the work of the Kokoda Memorial Foundation, (not to be confused with the Kokoda Track Foundation), they are responsible for the Imita Ridge and Ioribaiwa Village plinths and plaques; Owers' Corner. They also come up each year and volunteer their services to do all kinds of things such as paint Fred (statue) at McDonald's Cnr; paint the medical aid building at the Salvo's area on the road to Owers' Corner. They do annual maintenance on the archway and much much more. For ourselves, we think its a HUGE plus for KOKODA. Many a trekkers comments, have we finished, are we there yet???? With an archway, you will have either a start/and or finish line!

http://abcaustralia.net/news/stories/2010/....htm?site=qanda

http://www.kokodamemorialfoundation.com.au/

Their Mission Statement:

Firstly to commemorate the fallen men who fought in World War II along the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea by;

The installation of memorials along the Kokoda Track,

Maintenance of existing memorials along Kokoda Track,

Secondly to aid the local people with basic infrastructure.

Volunteers are ex Vietnam Vets and now their children are starting to come and help when needed.

8 RAR - A group of active Vietnam Veterans, members of 8 RAR have significantly supported KMF in all endeavours. The volunteers lead by Mr. Bob Long have aided in all aspects of design, logistics, funding raising, leadership and skills necessary to build the memorials and infrastructure in all the projects.

The archway at Owers' Corner I was told cost in excess of A$100,000 by the time it was erected. The one in Kokoda I believe will be less but hey, I say, congratulations to these guys for raising the money and putting something in Kokoda that will out last all of us like the one at Owers' Cnr.

Am I passionate about this new archway, YOU BET I AM

Photograph: The archway at Owers' Corner

Kokoda Initiative Update

Kokoda Initiative Update - September 2010:

Welcome to the Kokoda Initiative Update - a monthly electronic update of activities under the joint PNG-Australia Kokoda Initiative, brought to you by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (DSEWPaC - previously DEWHA) on behalf of the Australian Kokoda Taskforce.

We hope you find this update useful, and we encourage and welcome all contributions and feedback.

In this issue:

Kokoda Track Authority Chairman Visits Track Communities

Return to the Classroom

Kokoda Hospital Road Repaired and Creek Banks Protected

Track Improvements Continue Past Alola

Proud New Kokoda Rangers

Operation Halivim Sindaun Lon Aburursim HIV (HIV Intensive Integrated Patrol)

Mapping and Fieldwork in the Wet Tropics

Meet... Brian Boon

Kokoda Track Authority Chairman Visits Track Communities

During 17-27 August, the Kokoda Track Authority Chairman, Mr James Enage, visited communities along the Track. James attended community consultation meetings to discuss the drop in trekker numbers and the resulting impact on trek fee revenue and income from tourism service payments to Ward Development Committees. The patrol was also an opportunity to talk to communities about celebrations for Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels Day on 3 November. Track patrols are one part of the Kokoda Track Authority's ongoing communication and consultation with the Kokoda Track communities.

Return to the Classroom]

The Kokoda Development Program's (KDP) Education Patrol visited villages along the southern end of the Track in August to assess progress on KDP education and health infrastructure projects. They confirmed construction was complete on a double classroom and a staff house for the Efogi Seventh Day Adventist Primary School and inspected classrooms currently under construction in three other villages. The team reported that progress is good and that hardware materials for future school projects have been received in the region, as have stationery items for the second half of the school year.

The KDP Education Patrol is conducted under the Kokoda Initiative.

Kokoda Hospital Road Repaired and Creek Banks Protected

August and September were busy months in Kokoda as implementation of Kokoda Safety Package activities in the town continued. Repairs to the road leading up to Kokoda Hospital were completed in September, after workers rebuilt the supporting slope and road surface that had collapsed after flood damage. This work has created much-needed ease of access to the hospital.

The Kokoda Safety Package works also included construction of rock-filled levies along two creeks south of Kokoda to prevent similar flood damage occurring in the future. Through this work, flooding into the lower Kokoda township will be minimised. A team of 55 men from the Kokoda area helped move 330 tonnes of rock by hand in order to build the 34 metre long walls which will divert the high volume of water that flows after even very little rain.

The Kokoda Track Safety Package is funded by the Australian Government with the PNG Government supporting implementation. Both governments are working with local communities and the trekking industry to ensure that the Kokoda Track is as safe as possible, while recognising the risks inherent in this remote and rugged area.

Track Improvements Continue Past Alola

The second stage of the Kokoda Track maintenance and safety upgrade is now complete between Alola and Kasle Doba Creek, approximately 18km south of Kokoda. Steep side slopes and prolific vegetation growth had contributed to a down-slope movement of the Track. This created some dangerous drop-offs and in places left little to prevent Track users from falling down the valley towards Eora Creek.

The Alola work was supervised by trail builder Tim Eden, following the successful completion of work at Brown River. The Track repair and realignment was assisted by the rocky nature of the site, which enabled track builders from Alola Village to develop a sustainable new track alignment that blended in with the jungle environment. The work also repaired damaged stretches of Track within the choko fields and has provided villagers and trekkers with a safer path immediately out from the village.

This work was complemented by a program of log removal from the track which was undertaken following the severe storms that hit the area in June. The aim of the work is to return the track to a jungle like experience.

A review of track maintenance and upgrading projects was undertaken by Tim Eden and the Kokoda Track Rangers at their recent workshop in Port Moresby. The importance of regular and targeted track maintenance was identified and in particular drainage and the careful management of vegetation on priority sections of track.

Proud New Kokoda Rangers

Imagine having a job where you meet interesting people from different backgrounds, trek through pristine tropical rainforest, cross vibrant streams and rivers, and escape the stress of city life! These gentlemen have this and much more- meet the newly inducted Rangers of the Kokoda Track Authority: Landy Noel, Nuana Momoa, Elijah Peter, Donald Siga and Joe Duhube.

The rangers will utilise their knowledge and skills to assist trekker and walk the track inspecting the roads, bridges and guest house facilities along the way. They will also be responsible for ensuring that all trekkers carry permits and that tour operators are licensed. It also helps to be able to speak Koiari, Motu, Tok-pisin and English," says Ranger Landy, who has walked the track more than 32 times on his patrols.

It wasn't an easy application process. Ranger Joe had to walk all the way from his village Abuari to Port Moresby to deliver his application. Ranger Elijah's biggest concern was his lack of formal education, however through his demonstrated experience and the old adage of hard work and determination he has more than proven his capabilities. For Ranger Nuana, becoming a Ranger holds sentimental value to him because he is the proud son of a Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel. "I often wonder about the dangers my father faced and the feelings he had during WWII. He was barely out of his teens trying to understand a war fought on his land by strange men."

The new rangers will be reporting to the Kokoda Track Authority and will play an increasing role in the development of maintenance plans for the track to ensure a sustainable future.

* Adapted from an article by DEC Communications Officer Pauline Riman, published in The National on 24 September 2010.

Operation Halivim Sindaun Lon Aburursim HIV (HIV Intensive Integrated Patrol)

An Intensive HIV Integrated Health Patrol has been undertaken along the Track as the first major program of the Kokoda Development Program's (KDP) Kokoda Track HIV Prevention Strategy. Two patrol teams from the Hiri and Sohe districts of Central and Oro provinces visited twenty-five villages in the Kokoda to Sogeri catchment areas to conduct HIV/AIDS awareness, HIV voluntary counselling and testing, and distributing condoms and dispenser machines. The teams also provided additional health services including family health services, disease control, dental health services, environmental health and sanitation.

The patrol was funded by the PNG- Australia HIV/AIDs program - Sanap Wantaim ('Stand Together') - and the KDP as part of the KDP's broader health program. It enabled HIV Peer Educators / Village Health Volunteers and health workers to directly apply their knowledge and skills in the communities that need them.

Following this on-ground patrol, the HIV Peer Educators will also have the hands-on experience and confidence to carry out ongoing HIV prevention, treatment and care programs to change behaviours and assist people living along the Kokoda Track.

A health audit conducted as part of the development of programs under the Kokoda Initiative found that the social and economic characteristics of communities along the Track, coupled with the mobility of their people and visitors, made the Kokoda region particularly vulnerable to the risks of HIV infection. The Kokoda Development Program's HIV Prevention Strategy aims to reduce the risk of infection in Track communities by promoting awareness and acceptance of appropriate risk-reduction behaviours.

Mapping and Fieldwork in the Wet Tropics

Several PNG Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) staff (including graduates working on the Kokoda Initiative) spent the first two weeks of September undertaking training in the latest Geographic Information System (GIS) technology.

The training provided a hands-on introduction to the tools for mapping, editing, analysing, and documenting GIS data. GIS systems are the standard systems used in land management to understand and explain data, and knowledge of these tools will be invaluable to the DEC staff in their future work.

During a 4-day break in the GIS training, the DEC staff attended supplementary field training involving a bus tour of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The tour provided an opportunity for DEC staff to see and learn about the successful integration of forest conservation, sustainable tourism infrastructure, and hydro electric and water supply infrastructure.

Meet... Brian Boon

Each month we feature someone personally involved in delivering projects along the Kokoda Track to provide an insight into the life and background of the people dedicated to Kokoda Track work. This month's featured profile is of Brian Boon, KTA Kokoda Safety Package Project Manager.

Born: Hobart, Tasmania (the small island to the south of Australia)

Lives: On my yacht at the Yachtie in Port Moresby

Previous work: I graduated as a civil engineer in the Australian Army, and I served in several areas, including 2 years with the PNGDF Engineer Battalion in 1977 and 1978. My later roles were Asset Management in Canberra, and then as a Director with the Hobart City Council running their 250 person outdoor workforce. I recently worked for 5 years as an adviser on the PNG/Australia Law and Justice Program working with a number of agencies in the Law & Justice Sector.

Hobbies/interests: After my family, I'm passionate about my sailing - I'm very competitive, and have had a few successes. I'm also heavily involved in Yachtie activities including running training on sailing and navigation. I also enjoy scuba diving, bushwalking and a bit of squash.

Most unforgettable or rewarding experience on the Track/Track region: The Safety Package has provided the opportunity to make so many people's
lives safer, and therefore better. My reward is seeing and hearing the heartfelt thanks from the many people in the villages where we have completed some work. So many say they often get many words but not much action - but they say the Safety Package has been the reverse - LOTS of action.

Kokoda Initiative program I am most passionate about: The Safety Package!

From my PNG colleagues I have learnt: To be more aware of the cultural aspects of the work we do and the people we work with (especially those along the Track), including the small but important differences between regions.

Vision for the Kokoda Track: That the Track and its supporting infrastructure (ie the roads, bridges, airfields etc) is kept in a safe and well maintained condition by the responsible administrations for many years to come.

To subscribe to this update, email kokodainitiative@environment.gov.au

Around 6:30am this morning we left Port Moresby and headed out to Sogeri Lodge to pick up our latest trekker Graham Bailey who decided to walk from Owers' Corner to Kokoda on a 9 day trek. He will arrive on the 18th October and will fly back into Port Moresby on the 19th.

We met up with Graham when he arrived yesterday 9th October and drove him out to Bomana War Cemetery

Twins Allan & Peter Hazell

Some years back we had a set of adult twins walk the track with us by the name of Allan and Peter Hazell. When they came to trek they had carried with them a framed set of war memorabilia in relation to their father but could not find a resting place for it. On completion of their trek it was given to us for safe keeping until we found a good spot to put it.

We are now happy to announce (whilst probably not the final resting place) that we have proudly placed it on the wall in our Kokoda Wantok Tavern bar area.

For the regular visitors to our website you may recall Allan and Peter coming back for a visit shortly after their mother died to put in some running water in a couple of villages. At the time I wrote up a story on it which can be accessed by clicking onthe following url:

http://www.kokodatrail.com.au/forums/index...0&hl=hazell

The following year, Allan wrote to me and asked if I could provide an airline ticket for himself and his son and in return they would give us two weeks work at Orohaven. Allan was a plumber by trade but ended up in a desk job working for a council on the Sunshine Coast approving the plumbing for building designs.

We jumped at the idea! Allan and his son Jackson arrived and went to work. Our on site plumber Dickson Namari worked alongside Allan and they managed to put in our tanks and run water to the shower blocks/kitchen etc. Allan did not stop work from the time he set foot at Kokoda and we are forever thankful to him and his son.

For anyone in the future visiting Orohaven, please take a minute to look at the framed items behind the bar and think of these two brothers who walked the track in honour of their father.

On that note, anyone, who wishes to bring with them a keepsake we will find somewhere to put it at Orohaven Kokoda Retreat. We now have a wall to place plaques on should anyone wish to bring one along with them. There are two sets of walls, one of which is dedicated to the families who lost loved ones in the Airlines of PNG's plane crash in August 2009. The other one is looking lonely but at some stage in the future we hope it will be full of plaques put there by you our trekkers in memory of your loved ones.

For those of you who are not aware, the words ORO ORO ORO mean WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME in the language of the Oro Province. For those of you who have visited Fiji, its much the same as BULA BULA BULA, everywhere you go in the Oro Province they will call out ORO ORO ORO !!!

Stan Bisset - condolences to family and friends

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Stan Bisset a veteran of the 2/14 th Battalion who lost his brother Butch at Isurava. Stan passed away at the age of 98 on the Sunshine Coast.

A couple of years back we were invited to meet with Stan and his wife Gloria at his home on the Sunshine Coast. Immediately, I really liked Stan who came across as having a great sense of humour; was much taller then I had imagined and who was just so passionate about everything.

At the time we met, Russell Eroro and Eric Uwea were with me and he made them feel so welcome along with Gloria as guests in their home. He greeted them with a bear hug and later showed them photographs of his trip to PNG to visit Owers' Corner. Eric immediately recognised several of his relatives which broke the ice and allowed the PNG guides to open up and start talking with him about the war. Stan responded immediately and before long him and Russell were talking about various tracks around Isurava and other areas like the war had only happened the day before such was his memory. A bystander like myself, at the time 'new' to the Kokoda Trekking industry, it was like hearing about the war from a veteran who was there and a fuzzy wuzzy angel of today who could relate to what he was talking about as Russell grew up in Kokoda and could relate to all the areas he was referring to.

During our visit Stan took us to a room he put aside for photographs of trekkers and other items such as his beloved 'Wallaby Union Cap' obviously a keepsake from the time he was selected to represent Australian in England and was just so proud of being the oldest living Wallaby. He even allowed the guys to try on his cap which was a thrill for them and him too I think at the time as I recall the smile on his face.

On the wall we could not help but notice quite a few group photographs of our trekkers and realised at that point that once received he did not just put them in storage but proudly displayed them on a wall in his home. He informed us just how proud he felt that people were walking in their footsteps especially the young as he commented it would be them who will help keep the memory of what they did for Australia alive.

When we returned to PNG, we received a lovely hand written letter from him, 'yes' handwritten on 2/14th letterhead saying how much he enjoyed the visit. In this day and age, a handwritten letter is a rarity and we still have his letter as a keepsake from meeting a truly remarkable man. I know this was typical of his generation but it was still an honor to receive his letter and to know he had enjoyed our visit as much as we enjoyed meeting him and his wife Gloria.

I can still recall during our meeting Stan asking me to pass on to our trekkers that no matter what they ate on the track, they will be eating a damn sight better then the 2/14th. He told us that as Butch lay in his arms, he asked him to sing to him!

At the time of our visit, Gloria informed us that what kept Stan busy was the editing he continually did for publications about Kokoda to make sure the facts were in fact correct. I was surprised by this and could not help but think how at 93 years, he was still able to read through and edit books.

A truly remarkable man, and a person who touched us deeply. May he rest in peace.

Trek 580 - Trek Completed

Trek 580 left Owers' Corner earlier today after being picked up from the Gateway Hotel around 7:30am this morning. On the way out to Owers' trekkers were taken to the Bomana War Cemetery before heading for the drop off point for their walk. At Owers' Corner, I looked at my watch and it was 9:30 as they walked off down their first descent towards Goldie River. Their guide for this trek is Cyprian Haera.

Trekkers are made up of:

Deborah Thompson

Cliff Harris

Matt Carter

Alan Vincent

Chris Vincent

Grant Potter

Daryl Potter

This trek is unique for us as to the best of my knowledge, we have our two first set of twins walking the trek. Alan and Chris Vincent are two young 18 year olds walking with their Uncle, Matt Carter. Matt said at Owers' Corner, that he has waited two years to walk for them to be able to walk with him. Their sister and mother are also in PNG seeing other parts of the country while the guys walk the track.

Other KTL staff on this trek include Aidan Bauba; Cyprian Ujari; Francis Korove; Nelson Enoga; Freddy Yauga; and Bill Bauba as food porters. Personal porters I will introduce as I post their photographs below.

Matt was missing in the photograph below as he was still inside the hotel booking out and this was taken while we were all waiting for him to arrive so we could drive out to Bomana War Cemetery.

Sunbird Aviation flies into Efogi 25th October

It is with great pleasure that we announce Sunbird Aviation will commence services supporting the rural and remote communities of PNG and in particular the Koiari; Goilala districts of the Central Province, and Kokoda in the Oro Province. They will also support all airports along the Kokoda Trail and other areas of the Oro Province.

The purchase of a STOL, Britten Norman Turbine Islander aircraft with multi engine and IFR capability will enable operations into the smallest airfields, safely and economically thus avoiding the necessity of using very expensive helicopter services for medivacs and other logistical tasks.

The Islander can carry an all up weight of 1000 kg payload. The BN2T will provide a more economical payload / price combination than Twin Otter aircraft or helicopters and it's twin engine performance provides safe and legal IFR capability in all but the most severe weather conditions. It it a 9 seater aircraft.

On the 27th September, four trekkers flew into Popondetta and headed by road to Kokoda where they were our invited guests staying at Orohaven Kokoda Retreat. Around 7am this morning they commenced their trek with John Derick Eroro as their guide. Trekkers include:

Kelly Cure

Vaughan Shelley

Vittorio Toselli

Emma Robinson

One person is not included in the photographs below as per her wish. They were taken at Guria airport on the outskirts of Popondetta.

Trek 681 - Trek Completed

Today saw us welcome to Papua New Guinea Malcolm and Cheryl Henriques all the way from Mudgee in NSW. They appeared relaxed and in good spirits despite having a few mishaps concerning Cheryl's passport which saw them miss their Friday flight from Brisbane to Port Moresby. They ended up in Cairns at midnight and an early flight to PNG from Cairns but all ended well as they arrived here in PNG to walk the Kokoda Track.

Due to the lateness of their arrival their flight to Popondetta we were forced to change the direction of their trek at the last minute and they now commenced from Owers' Corner. On the plus side, they got a chance to have a look around Port Moresby and had a nice meal at a chinese restaurant before being driven out to the drop off point.

We had a few anxious moments as well with regards to the staff required for this trek as they had to be flown at the last minute into Port Moresby to join this trek. Two were lucky enough to arrive in yesterday with just the clothes on their backs while two others played catch up when they caught our truck to Popondetta from Kokoda to fly to Port Moresby having to leave Kokoda around 1am hoping to catch the Air Niugini 7am flight. Luck was not on our side as Air Niugini had cancelled several flights yesterday and it was decided to delay the flight today until 1pm this afternoon.

So another change had to be made for them to board the earlier flight out of Popondetta with Airlines of PNG having them arrive in Port Moresby approximately two hours after Cheryl and Malcolm touched down. Whilst waiting for the staff to arrive, they were driven out to Bomana War Cemetery.

Once we all gathered together and the boys had their lunch we took to the road that was to lead us to the drop off point. On the way we decided to stop off at the Wilderness Wild Life Sanctuary on the outskirts of Port Moresby.

On the 9th September I gave Pam Usher from Brisbane the choice to fly direct into Kokoda on a medivac pickup or to flyinto Popondetta and travel by road to Orohaven Kokoda Retreat. Pam chose to fly later in the morning at 9:20 to Popondetta.

As the day went by I wondered if Pam would have changed her mind in hindsight, as the flight was delayed due to a technical problem on the Dash 8 which saw it in the hangar and the flight delayed to around midday.

This meant Pam did not arrive in Kokoda until around 6pm last night. However, when I spoke to her in Kokoda she was still on a high and laughing away as she talked about her experiences of the day.

After a night at our base, Orohaven Kokoda Retreat, Pam commenced her walk about 7am this morning with her guide Kingsley Boropi, porter Garni Bore. Along as food porters are Clive and Arnold.

Photographs:

Pam just after I dropped her at the airport yesterday along with a photograph of Orohaven Kokoda Retreat.

Trekkers in this group include:

Leah Engler and her son Isaiah

Anthony Roe

Peter Rayfield

Amy Rayfield

Shane Benson

Lachlan Roe

Nathan Herald

Tony Herald

Chris Van Den Bergh

Paul Fraser

The plan was to pick them up at 6:30am and that by the time we loaded the backpacks and hit the road it would be close on 7am by the time we departed from the Gateway Hotel. As it turned out we were pretty much on target as I looked at my watch when we drove through the entrance and it was on 6:55am.

Trek 635 - Trek Completed

Last night I met with the three trekkers who headed out this morning to Popondetta. Unfortunately for them it was an early start as their book in time was 5:50am. Turns out today the flight into Popondetta goes, POM/PNP then PNP/TUFI then back to PNP. As we also had trekkers arriving back in from the same direction, they could not be left in case something went wrong with their flight and they ended up stranded there.

All went and the flight came back from Tufi and picked them up allowing our vehicle to drive into Popondetta. As our base in Kokoda 'Orohaven Kokoda Retreat' is operated by a genset, it was imperative they collect a drum of diesel as they ran out of fuel on Saturday and had to purchase locally for three times the price. Interoil the base in Popondetta decided to have a 'safety' meeting and would not allow them to pick up the fuel as the gates were locked.

The end result was they did not get away from Popondett until around lunch time and arrived in Kokoda mid afternoon which made it a long day for them. Dinner should be served around 6pm to allow them to get an early night for their walk commencing tomorrow.

Their guide tomorrow is Ernst Jinga who has walked for many years on the track and who is looking forward to walking with them across the track. Robert was supposed to have Andrew Tom as his porter but we were informed Andrew went to Popondetta looking for permanent work so a substitute porter was found to take his place.

Trekkers walking with Ernst Jinga include:

Robert Kirk

John Davey

Rhonda Leersen

Turns out Robert is a doctor and Rhonda is a nurse.

Last night I met with the two trekkers who headed out on a PNG led trek today from Owers' Corner by the name of Kevin Oakley and John O'Dwyer. Unfortunately a backpack went missing in transit in Australia which found them in a Target store shopping for shirts/shorts/socks with a 15 minutes time span before they had to head to the airport for their flight to PNG. Apparently a young woman helped them out and they were on their flight.

We tell trekkers to make sure they wear their boots on their internal or international flight to PNG as clothes can easily be replaced but wearing a brand new pair of boots for the first time is not good - well thats if you can find a pair in PNG to begin with that are your size and are the right quality for trekking.

When I met with them at the Gateway Hotel it was agreed they would be picked up at 6:15am this morning and driven out to Bomana War Cemetery. This happened on time which was where I said my goodbye. Russell then drove them to Owers' Corner stopping at McDonald's Corner and I am led to believe they started walking around 8am. Today the plan is to reach Ua'Ule Creek.

Garry walked with our boys once before as well. Andrew and Sally requested some of our staff to walk again with them such as Wallace Lemeki, Brendan Buka (the trek champion) and Eddie Idau.

Andrew and Sally came in a day ahead of Garry and got to drive around with Shane and ended up at the Yacht Club. Mid afternoon Garry Snowden arrived from Australia and along with Andrew & Sally they drove to Bomana War Cemetery and later the Wildlife Sanctuary on the outskirts of Port Moresby.

Remembrance Wall At Kokoda

Attention all our trekkers.

In the past we have often been asked if there is anywhere they can place a plaque in honour of their relatives who fought on the Kokoda Track. Until now we have had to say no, nothing in Kokoda.

However, we have just completed a rock wall which can be used for this purpose.

If you bring something with you, we shall find a spot for the plaque on our 'Wall of Remembrance' which is situated in Kokoda at Orohaven Kokoda Retreat which was opened recently by Lady Carol Kidu and some of the relatives who flew in to walk up to the crash site.

Please feel free to bring whatever you wish keeping in mind it is outside and the wall is not covered as per photographs below. Last week there was three plaques placed on the wall on the left hand side in honour of two young women who lost their lives in the Airlines PNG plane crash and Russell's brother Kingsley Eroro.

Hi Gail, I have been trying to log on to the forum this morning without success. ??? So i thought i would touch base with you and if you would like to post these comments on the site, feel free.

Well it's just over two years now since we did our trek #429 in Aug '08 with Big John and all the "boys". There is probably not a week goes past without some Kokoda reference or memory popping up.

Three of us from that trek plus one other, are heading off to Nepal for walk into the Annapurna Sanctuary for 16 days in Sept/Oct.

Then my wife & I are travelling to Thailand for a wedding then backpacking into Laos and Cambodia for a bit of a look see in Dec '10.

We are in training for that now, and the talk every Saturday morning is Kokoda experiences and memories.

I still play the cd you gave us with the music from the boys on the track.

We have convinced ourselves that once we had successfully completed the Kokoda Trail we can do anything. I was at 49 yrs old when i walked the track and intend to keep doing more and more.

I actually apply this mentality to most things i do in life and my business. "SMALL STEPS" has become my motto. It's THE best advise i have ever had form the boys (Kingsley).

There is talk of doing the Black Cat Trail next year. ? sounds gruelling. !!! If i / we do, i would love to see if my friend Mr Kingsley. J. Eroro will do me the honour of walking with me and showing me Popendetta. I promise not to bring that HEAVY pack with me next time.

As this our two year anniversary, all the group form # 429 have been e-mailing each other to how everyone is doing and what they have been up to, etc.

Mary, who walked with us has been in Europe and done a number of walks and is jetting off to Vegas soon for her daughters wedding.

Stuart chucked in his job and went off to China for a while (haven't caught up with him on that one) We have been to see Stuart play in his band, Lyndal Barry and The Apollos at local pubs in Melbourne (they are very good). This just to say, friendships are made "on the track".

It's easy to see the people who "do Kokoda" are people who do not sit around, all our guys have been doing heaps of travelling and trekking.

For us, we have been doing a bit also - in Easter '09, we went off to Spain/Morocco and did a few walks in the Sierra Nevada Region in Spain- The Circuit walk out of Grazalema and the Griffin Vulture Walk (massive vultures with 10ft wing spans ! & views to {die} live for.)

In Morocco we travelled over the Atlas Mountains into the Sahara Dessert - walk-camel ride-camp thing, all great.

In Nov '09 seven of us, walked a section of The Great Ocean Walk on the Victorian East coast- it's just beautiful.

Although i got huge blisters on my feet and the last two days were a bit uncomfortable- Jim (from Trek # 429) took a part of my load to make my walk easier. This goes to show, training IS EVERYTHING.

Enough for now, Hope everyone at KOKODA Trekking is well and we hope to see you again next year. ( ? black cat- maybe or something else ??)

Regards

Paul Evans

* Findlay-Evans Waterproofing
* Liquid Rubber Melbourne
* Evans Protective Coatings

Telephone: Australia 0418. 312. 646 - International +61 433. 183. 573

www.liquidrubbermelb.com.au

PS I have changed cars and my window sticker went with it.

Can you send me a few more I am proud to have on my car.

On the 11th August, my son Shane commenced his walk across the track with Tim Facy and Tim Wease. Unfortunately at the time I was in Kokoda so missed catching up with them. On arrival back in Port Moresby Shane phoned to say they were at Naoro.

At the present time of writing I am in Australia as my mother-in-law passed away early hours of Thursday night and I flew to Australia on Friday.

I have however, kept in touch with my office and was advised that they reached the half way point of Efogi yesterday and all was going well. In fact I was informed by Shane that they are really fit trekkers and they were ahead of schedule.

Tonight they should be at Templeton's area.
