Well I've gone and done it, I've now pointed my domains to my +Google+ page. Specifically to a search address that shows all the tidy stuff (not the status update-like posts etc.).

My other blogs (WordPress.com being the main one) are sitting there/here collecting dust and no one reads them plus I'm always on Google+ so it makes sense to move my "blogs" there. In addition my Google+ #Currents edition is exactly what I want from a blog. It uses the content I already post on there, has categories (Sections), a front page and a TOC. It works on mobiles (via Google Currents anyway) and is easy to maintain The layout is basic but clean and there is nothing extra for me to do beyond what I already do on Google+.

Both use hashtags queries so thank goodness I've been adding them since the very early days of G+. I'm also thankful that I've been formatting my posts and reshares for a while. It has benefited the presentation on Currents, for one.
And thank you for +Max Huijgen for the tip for searching under specific users only via the search operator inurl:, For example if you want to see only my posts then type this into the Google+ search box: "inurl:104405539079062799451". Very useful. Thanks, Max!
So you can find my "blog" here:
http://blog.koltregaskes.com
And my photography "blog" here:
http://blog.koltregaskesphotography.com
No, it's not perfect, the search parameters at the top are ugly for a starters, but it's my best option atm.
You can also find my Google Currents edition here:
http://www.google.com/producer/editions/CAowl8c1/kol_tregaskes
All are work-in-progress but all the content is from my Google+ stream. I just need to add a few tags here and there (which I do anyway) and job done. Well it's a test, let's see how I get on. :-)

Well I'm hoping all you rugby fans are enjoying the World Cup so far? Good. :-) I'm happy, although England went out against France, I'm happy to see the best rugby-playing team in the final and surely, at last, will be World Champions. New Zealand not only play rugby the way it's supposed to be played but they get the results too. It's entertaining winning rugby. Note to all other nations: copy this.

Anyway, I got thinking while watching all this rugby. I've thought about it in the past but thought this time I should put it down in a blog post

I'm a fan of both sport but my support has swayed from one to the other. More and more my interest is moving over to rugby. Football is going off the boil for me. Don't get me wrong, when football is good it's really good but overall the beautiful game is being spoilt but various different factors. The endless play-acting, the regular news about money issues and big wages, the numerous reports of misbehaving players... where does it end? Rugby, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have anywhere near the same level of problems. At the end of the day (sorry for the football clique) it's all about watching a great game. As an armchair supporter and a regular viewer of both I find that 80% of football matches are boring affairs. Whereas 80% of rugby matches are great. Football is so inconsistent and more often than not I find the matches are dull, forgetable events. Rugby is better, most matches are entertaining to watch, more action, more exictement. I love watching rugby.

So what could football learn from rugby? Where could football be improved to rival (in my opinion) rugby. Here's my bullet-point list:

Fair play: it's very rare to see any dishonestly in rugby, the players are true sportsmen and women. Whereas footballers are always claiming throw-ins, corners and free-kicks that are clearly not theirs, always play-acting and making a pranny of themselves in front of the crowd and millions at home watching

Supporters: perhaps I'm over generalising here but rugby fans seem to be far less aggressive than football fans. Perhaps you'd say this is down to less passion but I don't see that when watching rugby matches. Rugby fans are passionate but also controlled. I think a few (and it is only a few) football fans take their passion too far

Family-oriented: because of the supporters rugby seems to be more a family game. Why? Well one example is that it's...

Cheaper: football is ridiculously expensive. Why? Well maybe because clubs give into player's demands and pay them stupid amounts of money and thus us supporters have to help fund their silly wages

Tougher refs: the rugby refs are most definitely in charge. They don't take any crap from any player. Rugby players are huge compared to the ref but they know exactly who is the boss when they get on the pitch. Not on this but the refs help players keep within the law of the game (listen to the ref shouting at the teams during a match - he wants play to carry on as much as anyone)

More action: Because of the above we get more action for our pennies. The breaks in play are kept to a minimum as refs select play-on where possible. Football refs do the same but are far less consistent and far more likely to blow the whistle to halt the game. The poor old football ref is a wimp compared to their rugby counterparts. The players latch onto this and take advantage. We see refs regularly getting abuse from the players (and the crowd!)

Clock system: the clock stops when the refs says so. What this means is once we hit 80mins, that's it. When a player kicks off the ball it's game over. In football the clock goes on without any break. It's then left to the ref to add on extra time at the end of each half. No one but the ref knows how many extra minutes are left to go. And no one seems to agree with the ref when they add on those minutes. It's messy and confusing. The rugby system is clean and simple

Injuries: repairs go on while the play goes on in rugby. Sure, they is the rare occasion things get messy when play comes close to the injured player but most of the time play goes around them. If the injury is serious then play (and clock) is stopped. For minor play carries on. In football play stops virtually every time, regardless of the severity (and quite a bit of the time the player is faking the injury). We then get a medic run on, repair the player then (and this is just madness) the player has to go off and be whistled back on from the touchline. What a waste of time. Makes no sense

Blood swaps: basically this is a quick swap, if a rugby player is inujued and needs a quick repair then he goes off and another player comes on temporarily until the injured player returns all patched up. In football the player goes off and that's it, game finished for them. You would think this is confusing in rugby but I've never seen a problem and rugby has 30 players on the pitch instead of 22 players in rugby

Sin-bins: when a player is yellow carded in rugby they go off for 10mins. It's stricter and more punishing than a simply yellow card that players receive in football. A team with a sin-binned player (on average) loses 7 points. The solution? Play by the bloody rules! In football a yellow card is near-meaningless. It only really comes into affect if the same player gets after yellow (and then he's sent off)

Common sense: in rugby the ref sees a player throw the ball away in frustration, understands the situation, doesn't give a booking. Do the same in football and it's an instant yellow card (perhaps meaningless like I say above but really? What's the point!) This is just one of many examples where common sense actually prevails in rugby whereas football sometimes plays by the book a little too much

TV technology: it's a long, long debate for football but it works for rugby. If in doubt of a try the ref goes to the TV ref to confirm the player grounded the ball or not. It's a brief pause in play, sure but you get the correct answer in the end and everyone is happy In one game in this year's World Cup the ref actually used the TV recording to check if a foul occurred too (in relation to an attempted try). Football needs this ASAP. I don't want to see it over-used but for goals or off-sides then go to a quick TV replay and get the right answer. Don't tell me the lack of TV replays and the mistakes that come from it makes football more fun and interesting. Rubbish, let's have the right result for every match. An incorrect decision will cause anger for one side or the other. Let's avoid that and have the right decision every time

Don't get me wrong, rugby isn't perfect, not at all but I do think football could certainly take note of some of the points above and improve the game.

What are your thoughts? Do you think football could learn from rugby? Or is football fine as it is?

The Rugby World Cup Final kicks off at 9:00am GMT on 23rd October 2011. Come on New Zealand! :-)

Yeah I know they don't really work on Google+ (I live in hope though ;-)) but as you can see I'm already adding tags to most of my posts. Most of the time they are generic tags like #tech but I've just been tidying up some old posts and have added the following (potentially) useful tags... at least for me. :-)

#kolgoogleplusidea
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolgoogleplusidea
Google+ feature suggestions or suggestions ported over from over services. Also includes my Google+ Ideas Google Doc (editable to all if you wish)

#kolblog
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolblog
My blog posts on Google+. It's not exclusive to me but, heck, all these tags are open to abuse. ;-)

#kolblogidea
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolblogidea
Kinda my prep posts for my blogs, crowd-sourcing ideas or thoughts on future blog posts

#kolgoogleplus
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolgoogleplus
Any Google+-related post I think is worth tracking long term

#kolcircles
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolcircles
My Google+ Circles List posts

#kolreview
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolreview
Any reviews I do

#kolstatusupdate
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolstatusupdate
My status update-type posts. One for excluding from your searches maybe ;-)

#kolqotd
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolqotd
My Question of the Day posts

#kolgreader
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolgreader
Posts relating to Google Reader

#kolsharedcircle
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolsharedcircle
These are the Google+ Circles I've shared

#kolgoogleplusfeeds
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolgoogleplusfeeds
Basically my shared circles but listing the users in the post and requesting more suggestions

#kolgreadersites
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolgreadersites
My Google Reader Feeds posts, lists of feeds I follow in various topics

Also, as I'm expertimeting with using Google+ as my blog (read my post here: https://plus.google.com/104405539079062799451/posts/FzGWczX2hgb) I'm now starting to add my regular post tags to my Google+ posts, e.g. #newmusicmonday:
https://plus.google.com/s/%23newmusicmonday

So if you wanted to see my New Music Monday posts then use a combo of #newmusicmonday and #kolblog:
https://plus.google.com/s/%23newmusicmonday%20%23kolblog

I'm sure I'll be adding to this list of tags so (of course) I'll tag these posts too, #kolhashtag (a hashtag for tagging hastags ;-))

And yes, I've created saved searches for all these.

Another #plustip. If you've got a "Drafts" Circle and then used tags like above as saved searches, if you don't want your draft posts coming up on your searches (they of course will only appear to you but nevertheless quite annoying) then add a #draft tag to them and then create a saved search for "#kolblog -#koldraft" (this filters out the draft posts from the searches, leaving you with your public posts only).

If you want all my hashtags in one easy-to-digestive package then I've put all my personal tags into one.

So from this:
#kolhashtag OR #kolqotd OR #kolstatusupdate OR #kolgoogleplusidea OR #kolblog OR #kolblogidea OR #kolgoogleplus OR #kolcirclesOR #kolreview OR #kolgreader OR #kolsharedcircle OR #kolgoogleplusfeeds OR #kolgreadersites

To this:
https://plus.google.com/s/%23kolhashtag%20OR%20%23kolqotd%20OR%20%23kolstatusupdate%20OR%20%23kolgoogleplusidea%20OR%20%23kolblog%20OR%20%23kolblogidea%20OR%20%23kolgoogleplus%20OR%20%23kolcircles%20OR%20%23kolreview%20OR%20%23kolgreader%20OR%20%23kolsharedcircle%20OR%20%23kolgoogleplusfeeds%20OR%20%23kolgreadersites

Note I've purposely not linked the bolded hashtags above for formatting tidiness. Use the links to view the hashtags search results, it's the same thing. EDIT: Looks like Google+ has fixed the bug with the hashtags now. :-)

I've got a few themes for my blog, daily tags I use each week. I'm sure you've heard of them or even used them before but they are not so popular on Google+ yet. Maybe we could use them? :-)

Either way here's my themes I'm going to try to stick to them here on Google+ (as well as on my blog):

#NewMusicMonday
https://plus.google.com/s/%23newmusicmonday%20-%23musicmonday
Not to be confused with #MusicMonday (which I've excluded in the search link above) the #NewMusicMonday is where you could post a newly discovered tune you've liked from the past week. I've only shared one post so far but this is the kind of thing I'm thinking of:
https://plus.google.com/104405539079062799451/posts/dFWX3BXT7Dy

#TechTuesday
https://plus.google.com/s/%23TechTuesday
To be fair I think this is kinda being used already. But perhaps use this tag to post your more techy posts. Anything tech; gadgets, social media, web apps, etc. For my blog, Tuesday is the day I normally post my tech-related posts so I've attached the #TechTuesdaytag to them.

#GamingWednesday
https://plus.google.com/s/%23GamingWednesday
Yeah not the best name but it was basically last day to fill as the rest had been taken up. So any gaming-related posts are posted on Wednesdays.

#PhotographyThursday OR
#PhotoThursday
https://plus.google.com/s/%23PhotographyThursday%20OR%20%23PhotoThursday
Yeah I know, there are 101 photography tags for every day of the week but I choose Thursday for my photography posts. :-)

#MovieFriday OR
#MoviesFriday
https://plus.google.com/s/%23MovieFriday%20OR%20%23MoviesFriday
If I watch a movie it tends to be on a Friday so I chose #MovieFriday, logical right? :-) Post any movie reviews on Friday or any movie-watching posts at the end of the week

#SportingSaturday OR
#SportingSunday
https://plus.google.com/s/%23SportingSaturday%20OR%20%23SportingSunday
Simply because most sport happens over the weekend. This is when I share my #kollivechat posts for F1, rugby and football.

What ya think? Dumb names? Missed anything? I tried to keep to one topic per day, there are of course loads but they will keep me more than busy. :-)

So just to sum all those up:

Monday: #NewMusicMonday
Tuesday: #TechTuesday
Wednesday: #GamingWednesday
Thursday: #PhotographyThursday OR #PhotoThursday
Friday: #MovieFriday
Saturday and Sunday: #SportingSaturday OR #SportingSunday

Note I've purposely not linked the bolded hashtags above for formatting tidiness. Use the links to view the hashtags search results, it's the same thing. EDIT: Looks like Google+ has fixed the bug with the hashtags now. :-)

Do you have any themes on Google+? Feel free to suggest any more in the comments below. I have an interesting post coming up on Thursday btw. :-)

This post relates to my Google Reader feeds post here: https://plus.google.com/104405539079062799451/posts/ZGsh5XvYSvp Part of the GReader tidy-up included a few sites I unsubscribed from but moved to my "Regulars" bookmark folder. Basically they are sites I don't really need to visit daily and a weekly visit is probably enough.
The list below includes the main 'regular' sites (in some sort of particular order :-)):
BBC News: in particular the most popular articles list
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/
The Independent: in particular the most read articles
http://www.independent.co.uk/
Guardian Weekly + Zeitgeist + comment is free:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekly
http://www.guardian.co.uk/zeitgeist
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree
Digg: [yes there still is a use for Digg]
http://digg.com/
tweetmeme:
http://tweetmeme.com/
TechRadar: in particular the most read articles
http://www.techradar.com/
Wired.com: in particular the most popular articles [because I already subscribe the UK site]
http://www.wired.com/
Lifehacker: in particular the top posts
http://lifehacker.com/
GameSpot UK: in particular the 'our picks' posts
http://uk.gamespot.com/
New Scientist: in particular the most read articles
http://www.newscientist.com/
Physorg: weekly ranked articles:
http://www.physorg.com/sort/rank/1w/
Most of these sites are heavy posters so I stopped following them. What I do now is check out their 'most read' or 'popular' lists and see if I find anything of interest. I already subscribe to Wired.co.uk so I only pop onto Wired.com quickly. I have painstakingly added all the games I'm interested in on GameSpot and I tend to check 'My Updates' page each week. As for the GameSpot RSS feed, it's just too much. If there was the ability to customise the feed to only show blogs, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC gaming posts then great, but the options available are not specific enough. And The Independent and the Guardian are my two favourite newspapers and the New Scientist is my favourite science magazine.
I'm interested in your suggestions for any other sites? I'm particularly interested in sites that so a week-in-review or 'most popular' lists.
Feel free to suggest any more in the comments below.

If you like please reshare and +1 this post, the direct URL is:
https://plus.google.com/104405539079062799451/posts/MNVQBd7t1wo

I've had a big tidy-up of my GReader in the last few weeks. I've dramatically cut down the number of feeds I follow. I wasn't reading a lot of them anyway so they were just collecting dust. I had two-tiers (tier one were the feeds I read first, tier two was the rest) and the second tier was virtually unused. So I've got rid of that lot (well backed them up onto another of my GReader accounts) and put the remaining feeds into a tidier more logical order.

The topics (folders) now match my "Topics:" Google+ Circles which I documented here:https://plus.google.com/104405539079062799451/posts/jMBbVyQ24qS. The main ones being the topics listed below.
What I've also done is re-create from GRedaer "bundles" so if you wish to subscribe to the bundles then use the links below.
I will be posting separate posts for each topic, listing all the sites individually with direct links to the RSS feeds. For now here are the bundles (apologises to the folks who where subscribed to my previous bundles, I noticed a few were. They have been superseded be these):
Art: [warning: a few NSWF]
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FArt
Fun:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FFun
Gaming:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FGaming
Movies:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FMovies
Music:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FMusic
Nature / Wildlife:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FNature
News (World / Politics):
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FNews
Photography [warning: some NSWF]:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FPhotography
Photos [warning@ some NSFW]:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FPhotos
Science:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FScience
Sport (F1, Football, Rugby):
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FSport
Technology:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FTechnology
Travel:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FTravel
Podcasts: [all sorts of topics covered, lots of music]
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FPodcasts
Misc.:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FMisc.
I also have a, Entertainment bundle, which includes all the gaming, music and movie feeds:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FEntertainment
And lastly I have a Google Reader Shares bundle, which are the specially selected GReader users I follow:
http://www.google.com/reader/bundle/user%2F14221219680774314123%2Fbundle%2FGoogle%20Reader%20Shares
But I need some help if you don't mind?
Be it more for curated content of interesting posts rather than posting my own stuff (though I've started doing that too).

It's the complete opposite when it comes to my social networks. First it was the wonderful FriendFeed. Goodness knows how I get over 3,000 followers over there, interaction was high. Twitter grew and grew as well but at a much slower rate. And now Google+, which has gone straight through the roof with over 12,000 followers there.I have WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr and Posterous blogs (WordPress being the current favourite). but readership is virtual nothing. No one reads them, no one comments. No interaction at all. I've attempted writing a blog many times over the years but it seems wasted when there is no one at the other end.

So my thinking is why not use that there service as my blog? Google+ is by no means set-up for proper blogging. It lacks a lot of basic blog-like features. I used this post to suggest how Buzz could be turned into a kinda blogging 'layer' that fits somewhere in-between Google+'s simply share box and Blogger's more full and advanced blogging service - something not too complicated for non-bloggers but something advanced enough to allows us bloggers to create my customised posts. Nonetheless, it's very much possible to use Google+ as a blog if you wish. The ability to post lengthly articles (like this one) with some very basic formatting does allow for blog-like posts to be shared here. So I'm gonna give it at least a try. :-)

I won't be ditching my blogs, no, no. I'll still post to them but I'll be posting my blog articles directly on Google+ in full and first going forward. Google+ will be my 'home' (hmmm, I remember saying something very similar about another service - Amplify!)

If anyone is thinking of doing the same, I'll give you one #plustip. Create a Circle called "Drafts", add no-one to it. Then write-up your blog posts and share them to the "Drafts" Circle before posting them publicly. The advantage to this is you can test that the formatting works. Also, it allows you to simply save the post to come back to it later for a re-edit. Works a treat for me. :-)

Speaking of Google+ Circles, please have a read of how I've set-up mine here. it goes into detail my Circles structure and reasons behind it.

What are your thoughts? Could you use Google+ as your blog? What features would like on Google+ to tempt you?

For all my Google+ feature ideas search for the tag here: https://plus.google.com/s/kolgoogleplusidea

And for the Google+ thread of this post, head over to here.
