Well, it was a great weekend at Eglin Air Force Base! I’m so excited to be an official part of the Crossfit community, now certified as a Level 1 Trainer. The corporate trainers (Chuck, Jenni, Justin & Joe) were unbelievable and, in true Crossfit fashion, completely down to earth and approachable about anything. Also, LtCol Chad Nelson’s box and crew up there made the entire experience one of the most memorable things I’ve done, period. Thanks so much to everyone!

If you are not familiar with Crossfit go to the site here. Think it’s not for you? Think again. Absolutely anyone can, and should, be training in this fashion. Obviously form and technique ALWAYS comes before strength and intensity but you can work up to whatever level you’re capable of. Take a look at the following Crossfit Journal article detailing John Sullivan’s journey into Crossfit (a 45 year old OK Congressman).

Be careful of ingesting too many artificial sweeteners though. While they are not too harmful in limited amounts, excessive intake comes with a whole other set of problems. Over the course of your lifetime, “excessive intake” is not that hard to reach.

The students and staff alike were excited about the program and the unique angle of removing any and all barriers to kids getting and/or staying healthy. The EA Youth Club offers coached high-level athletic training, a community-driven group setting, partially or fully subsidized tuition and even reduced cost Lee Tran bussing for those without transportation.

A new study recently released by the University of Wisconsin Health cited that variances between the two major diabetes screening standards cause up to 1/3 of the diabetics seen fly under the radar and not be detected. The two commonly accepted guidelines are from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and by the US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF). ”According to the study’s lead author Dr. Ann Sheehy, a hospitalist and clinical assistant professor at the School of Medicine and Public Health, use of USPSTF guidelines resulted in 460 fewer diagnoses of diabetes or greater than one-third of all cases detected, compared to screening criteria recommended by the ADA.”

What does this mean to you? Ask your doctor how he judges whether or not to test you for diabetes, by the USPSTF guidlines or by the ADA’s. Also, have anyone you care about ask their doctor the same thing. Why? “I saw patients with random glucose levels of 220 or higher, but they didn’t carry a diagnosis of diabetes,” she (Dr. Sheehy) said. “One in 20 people in the U.S. has undiagnosed diabetes. We wanted to know, why is that? Are providers not capturing the right guidelines?” This is serious stuff. You can read the press release for this article at DiabetesHealth.com or see the online abstract of the article here at the Mayo Clinic Proceedings website.

A cure for diabetes will be found in our lifetime we just have to show up with our legs and vital organs. Do your part to help yourself and others cross that line and be proactive.

Yours in health,

To our fellow Crossfitters and health enthusiasts alike,

How would you like a chance at a free 1 yr EA adult membership and the opportunity to be a pivotal part of our new EA Youth Club? We’re not looking to test your body’s power output here. We’re testing the power of your network.

Welcome to the EA Youth Club Challenge!

Here’s the lowdown. We want to involve as many people as possible in making this program an absolute success and model for future programs in other areas. Right now, this means drumming up as many donors and as much sponsorship as we possibly can. We will do this by working with major donors/sponsors and smaller gifts/sponsorships alike. You can play a part in either by simply donating yourself or by utilizing your network and referring others who can grab on to our vision and the power of this unique opportunity. That’s it! No burpees. No thrusters. No rowing…but it is timed. Our deadline is January 31rst, so make a New Year’s resolution to bring home the Blue Ribbon on this one! Prizes are as follows:

Blue Ribbon, 1 yr EA membership = highest $ amount donated or referred ($2,500 minimum)
