The White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla)

I've got this great photo of adult White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) from the nature photographers Andrzej Adamczewski and Piotrek Zientek. Recently they took some greats pictures of raptores near Mysliborz. One of them had a cr-ring. What's interesting the bird was ringed as chick in the East of Poland (500 km distance) on 2009. Darvic Black-headed Gulls migration

Every month i get a new recovery of my darvic Black-headed gulls which were ringed in the West Pomerania Province in Poland. This research become more and more interesting. Hope to write a publication about it in nearly future, but right now see these two birds.

Both of gulls were caught in winter time as 2cy.

T24N - north-south migrant
- caught in Stargard (Poland)
- wintering area beetwen Świdnica (Poland), Vienna (Austria), Cracow (Poland)
- breeding ? probably somewhere in the south

T42N - east-west migrant
- caught in Świnoujście (Poland)
- wintering in Amsterdam (Netherlands)
- breeding near Riga (Latvia)

Just two ringed Dunlin & recovery

I ringed only two Dunlin (Calidris alpina) in 2012. What's more, they were caught in Swinoujscie city beach, which is full of tourists throughout the whole year. As you can guess birds were tame and went between the people legs.

I didn't expect that 2 weeks after ringing date, one of the Dunlin would be corntroled in the Vogelreservat Langenwerder, Germany (181 km distance).

Not so often we receive a report of Polish-ringed bird in Russia. This is a large country with a low population density (just 8 Pop. per km2), so a chance to find ringed bird is even lower. FN77822 was also carrying the darvic ring TH08 when found in July 2010 at pond near Vozdvizhenskoe. The Gull was weak and released in dry place.

This bird had been ringed as 2cy on 15.12.2009 and covered a distance of 1419 km. Interestingly, FN77822 was cought using fishing line on my flat windowsill in Szczecin.

This is my first recovery of Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) in Russia, hope not the last :)

Yeah! Finally bird ringing in Poland is at the world's highest level. Since now, we've got the POLRING (http://ring.stornit.gda.pl/).

The POLRING is a online program provides quick access to the database of whole ringing birds in Poland. This means that both ringers and ring readers continually updates the database.
Have you ever read a Polish metal or colour ring and still have no answer ? Do you want to see a whole life history of this bird with a google map ? If yes just register at POLRING.

Few easy steps to use the POLRING

1. Go http://ring.stornit.gda.pl/ and change the language to English.

2. Now you have 2 ways:
a) fill the quick form to get the ringing data on your email,
b) register to have regular acces to the program.

3.If "a)" just fill all required fields and wait for an email (take up to 3 days).

3.If "b)" register than log in and click "New records". Fill all required fields and wait for verification (from 15 min to 3 days - depends on the presence data in the database)

4.Go "Records" >> "My records" and enjoy :)

Starting the Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) colour-ring project

We have a great event right now in Poland - Euro 2012, but anyway have some time (in the breaks beetwen matches) for birdringing ;-)))

The kolring team had just started the new colour-ring project in the West Pomerania Province. We study the Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) in the bigest nesting colony in our region, where last year found dead tern with African metal ring. In previous years ringed there lots of chicks, but no feedback so far. Hope the green plastic rings with white 3 digits code help us to get some interesting recoveries. At the moment captured at nest 18 adult birds - 14 new and 4 control!!!

The Rarest Birds on Earth

As an avid bird watcher, there is a comforting feeling seeing the familiar sight of common birds that frequent a locale, such as seeing something like a finch, cardinal, or blue bird. It can also be quite exhilarating to see the occasional rare bird. Maybe if you are lucky during your next bird watching trip, you can spot one of rarest birds in the bird. Here is a list of some of the rarest birds in the world:

Forest Owlet – The forest owlet is native to India. It has deep yellow eyes with a brown crown. Its body and tail have a checkered brown, black and white pattern. Its territorial call can be very loud. It produces a varied of sounds, most of which have undulations in pitch. It was originally thought to be extinct until rediscovered in 1997. Ornithologists now believe there are only around 250 Forest Owlets left in the world. Asian Crested Ibis – The Asian crested ibis has a distinctive coloring pattern and shape. It has a long black bill with an orange end point. It's has a black white and orange body. Its wings are particularly striking with a predominantly white color with beautiful orange highlights. The Asian crested ibis originally had a habitat range in Russia, China, and Japan. Now, with only around 500 birds left in its population, the Asian Crested Ibis is limited to Shaanxi province in China.
Honduran Emerald – The Honduran emerald is from the hummingbird family. It is notable for its glistening emerald coloring pattern, which covers its head and upper portion of its body. It often makes a metallic "ticking" sound interspersed with "buzzy" chattering. While rebounding in numbers after initially crashing to an endangered level with the destruction of its native habitat in Honduras, the Honduran Emerald still only has a population of between 250 and 1,000 birds.

Beautiful flight of a Greenfinch

I like to netting birds at my feeder but even more to get news about them afterwards. BTW it's the first such great control of my over 300 colour-ringed Greenfinches. Had captured 6YR (an adult, female) on the 30.10.2011 in Stargard Szczecinski, Poland and more then 4 mounths later Lars Jonsson (author of the fieldguide Birds of Europe) found it at his garden in Gotland, Sweden.

The Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) with neckbank

Today i observed a big flock of Barnacle Goose (136 birds) in Obryta near Miedwie Lake. See the short movie. BTW read the White-fronted Goose with lime neckband. I've chceked already the "Tracking Marked Geese" website and found the map with previous reports - amazing! see below.

It has been four years since i captured an adult Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus) on the Kierskie Lake (Poznan). Recently seen there again after two years of lack of information. It has a very interesting life history so far:

winter 2008 - Kierskie Lake and month after went to Belarus
winter 2009 - Denmark
winter 2012 - again Kierskie Lake

As You can see, it has been observed only in winter time. Propably it is breeding on the east of Europe.

Short-term movement of C77 Coot

Just received great news about white C77 Coot (Fulica atra), which i captured on Kacprowicza Park, Szczecin on December 2011. It has been there since the 30.01.2012 and 8 days later moved to the De Wijde Blik Lake near Amsterdam, Netherlands (643 km from ringing place). Thanks to Chris Meewis for information and nice pictures.

Estonian and Swedish Common Gulls

Today spent few min after my work on the Miedzyzdroje's beach. Despite a storm on the sea there were lots of BHG and Common Gull. I read one Estonian, white PP67 and controlled Swedish Common Gull!!! As you can see on the picture i added it a brand new red plastic ring T515 from our Polish project. From now it should be more recognizable and may get more recoveries.

Welcome Poland! LBBG (Larus fuscus)

It was just regular every week gullwatching at Miedwie Lake. We read there mainly gulls who previously captured in the city centre of Stargard. The Lesser Black-backed Gull is quite rare guest on our region, what more Polish ringers catch just few LBBGs a year. Lukasz and me didn't expected that this 1cy gull would be so timed to catch and ring it after 10 min.

What next ? Hope to see it on Madrid Gull Team website next year :)

Breeding Barn Owl (Tyto alba)

Yesterday Lukasz Borek ringed two barn owl chicks in one of a church tower near Stargard Szczecinski, Poland. As you can see they are few days to fly out. It is amazing that this species can breeding right now (i mean we have late autumn in Poland).

Today spent a short while at my favorite place to gull's ring reading - Miedwie Lake. Luckily read a Croatian YLG with the yellow S62R. Have no idea why Croatian gulls like wintering in Poland...they have warmer climate than here for sure.

The long-distance flight of urban Mallard

I have recived message from Witold Cieselka about his very nice recovery of the Mallard. He read Czech duck (N. MUSEUM PRAHA C 88977) on Wislok river in Rzeszow. Interestingly the bird was ringed in the city centre of Praha.

Croatian Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) at Miedwie Lake

Is not the first Croatian Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) who visit the Miedwie Lake (the fifth bigest lake in Poland). They really like roosting place on the north coast (Morzyczyn). Look forward to hearing from Luka about ringing details.
