Sony Distagon T* 24mm F2 SSM review

Sony has been grabbing the headlines over the past year or so for its innovative 'SLT' cameras, the mirrorless NEX system and prolific launches of inexpensive SLRs. But it has also been quietly building up an impressive line of high-end full frame equipment, spearheaded by an array of Carl Zeiss branded optics. And it's into this upper half of the company's curiously bifurcated product line that the Distagon T* 24mm F2 SSM arrives, offering a genuinely fast and wide option for Alpha 850 / 900 users, while doubling as a classic semi-wide 35mm equivalent on APS-C cameras. This lens was shown in advanced pre-production form at PMA earlier this year, and has been hotly anticipated by Sony fans ever since.

The design and construction is typical of Sony's Carl Zeiss lenses, with a rather utilitarian, purposeful aesthetic and extremely high quality fit and finish (however in contrast to Canon and Nikon's 24mm F1.4 lenses, it's not described as dust- or water-sealed). The optical design uses 9 elements in 7 groups, including two aspheric and two Extra-low Dispersion glass elements to combat aberrations. For the first time in a Carl Zeiss prime, a built-in ultrasonic-type SuperSonic Wave Motor is employed for autofocus, promising fast, silent focusing and enabling Direct Manual Focus override. A circular aperture diaphragm, comprised of nine curved blades, is designed to produce a smooth, natural rendition of out-of-focus regions of the frame.

Sony's full frame cameras have drawn plenty of critical admiration for their exceptional low-ISO image quality and pared-down feature set unashamedly focused on stills photography. But for the company to gain a real foothold in this high end sector it also needs to convince potential buyers that its lens offerings can match those from its more-established rivals, Canon and Nikon. The two existing Carl Zeiss-branded primes, the Planar T* 85mm F1.4 and Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8, are certainly highly regarded by those who've used them (including us), so can the 24mm F2 follow suit?

Design

Like Sony's other Carl Zeiss-branded lenses, the 24mm F2 is a beautifully-constructed object that exudes quality, with its utilitarian lines, solid metal body and super-smooth focus ring. The side of the barrel plays host to a large circular AF/MF switch, plus Sony's familiar Focus Hold button, which can also be customized for such functions as depth of field preview and 'Intelligent Preview' depending on the camera body used. The lens focuses by moving the rear group internally, so its length (and therefore balance on the camera) never changes.

One notable omission on a lens at this price and quality level is the lack of dust- and water-sealing (both Canon and Nikon advertise their 24mm F1.4 designs as sealed).

Compared to Planar T* 85mm F1.4 and Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 SSM lenses

This comparison gives an idea of the 24mm F2's size in comparison to two of Sony's other Carl Zeiss lenses - the 85mm F1.4 on the left, and the 16-35mm F2.8 SSM on the right. Lenses from almost all manufacturers seem to have been growing in size recently, and the 24mm doesn't buck this trend; it's very similar in size to the 85mm, being just a fraction longer but slightly narrower in diameter. However it still offers a distinctly more compact alternative to the wide zoom.

Compared to Canon EF 24mm F1.4L II USM

To get a second perspective on the Distagon's dimensions, here it is alongside one of its main competitors, the Canon EF 24mm F1.4L II USM (which is a little larger than Nikon's AF-S Nikkor 24mm F1.4G ED). The Sony is a bit smaller than the Canon, although perhaps not as much as you might hope given the latter's whole stop light gathering advantage. Of course it's worth remembering that the Sony will benefit from the Super SteadyShot stabilization built-in to Alpha SLR bodies, which in principle makes it hand-holdable in extremely low light (just as long as you don't have to worry about motion blur from subject movement).

On the camera

	The size of the Distagon 24mm F2 makes it a perfect match for the chunky full-frame Alpha bodies (here it is on the Alpha 850). The controls are all well-placed and easy to operate.
	The lens isn't completely out of place on smaller bodies, but it can start to feel a little front-heavy on budget models such as the A230 here. (Of course this isn't really a combination we'd expect to see out in the wild very often.)
	The 24mm F2 can also be used on the mirrorless NEX bodies via the LA-EA1 adapter, and will autofocus if you have the latest firmware updates installed. One word we'd struggle to use here, though, is 'proportionate'.

Autofocus

The 24mm F2 employs a ring-type ultrasonic SuperSonic Wave Motor for autofocus, and as expected it's fast, near silent and extremely decisive. The Direct Manual Focus feature means its also possible to manually tweak the focus position at any time, even when the camera and lens are both set to autofocus.

Lens body elements

	The lens uses Sony's Alpha mount, which is identical to Minolta's A-type. The gold contacts are used for communication with the camera, and the black metal lever controls the aperture. Notably, there's no seal around the mount against dust and water ingress.
	The filter thread is 72mm (shared with the 85mm F1.4), and does not rotate on focusing, which facilitates the use of filters such as polarizers and neutral density gradients.
	The 45mm deep, petal-type ALC-SH110 hood is supplied as standard and bayonets firmly onto the front of the lens. It's made from thick black plastic, with a felt lining to minimize reflection of stray light into the lens, and reverses neatly for storage.
	The finely ridged grip on the focus ring is 18mm wide. It rotates about 130 degrees from infinity to the closest focus mark of 0.19m, with a silky-smooth action. The rear-focusing mechanism means that the lens's length doesn't change. The focus ring travels slightly past the infinity mark, apparently to allow for the effects of ambient temperature variations.
	This large window shows the focus distance in both feet and meters. The depth of field scale is calibrated for use on full frame cameras. If you want to use it on APS-C bodies you'll need to close the aperture down by about a stop and third beyond that marked to get the indicated depth of field.
	The side of the barrel plays host to Sony's slightly unconventional, but very easy to operate circular focus mode switch, which surrounds the customizable focus hold button.

Studio Tests - APS-C format

The 24mm F2 performs very well on APS-C - there's really very little to complain about here. Sharpness is high, and chromatic aberration, vignetting and distortion all very low.

Sharpness	Sharpness is high and impressively even across the frame wide open at F2. It increases a little towards the corners on stopping down, but not much. Very best results are seen around F4 - 5.6; at apertures smaller than about F11, diffraction starts to visibly degrade the overall sharpness.
Chromatic Aberration	Lateral chromatic aberration is very low, with just a hint of green / magenta fringing towards the corners of the frame.
Falloff	We consider falloff to become perceptible when the corner illumination falls to more than 1 stop less than the center. As usual for a full-frame lens used on APS-C, there's really nothing to worry about here.
Distortion	Distortion is very low, at 0.5% barrel - nothing you're ever likely to see.

Macro Focus

	Wide angle lenses may not spring to mind as the obvious choice for close-ups, but the 24mm F2 doesn't do at all badly in this regard. Our measured minimum focus distance is just 18.5cm, giving a rather tight working distance of about 6.5cm from the front of the lens to the subject, and a maximum magnification of 0.3x. Image quality on APS-C is more than acceptable, with impressive sharpness across the frame when stopped down to just F2.8. Barrel distortion is clearly visible, but there's scarcely any lateral chromatic aberration.

Samsung NX100 Brief Hands-on Preview

Preview based on a pre-production Samsung NX100

Samsung was the first company outside the Micro Four Thirds consortium to release a mirrorless interchangable lens camera. The distinctly DSLR-like NX10 made little fuss about its mirrorless construction, concentrating instead on offering familiar capbilities and behavior in a smaller body with smaller lenses. Now its sister model, the NX100 takes a slightly different approach - it eschews the traditional styling of the NX10 and instead embraces the simpler silhouette of a compact camera. And, although its stylistic minimalism makes it appear somewhat monolithic, it's almost identical in size to its obvious peers - the Panasonic GF1 and Olympus E-P2.

The camera's more compact dimensions make sense of Samsung's previously announced 20-50mm F3.5-5.6 'compact zoom lens' that arrives alongside the NX100. It's a retractable zoom that is immediately reminiscent of the Olympus 14-42mm kit zoom for Micro Four Thirds. It isn't image stabilized and, starting at 30mm equivalent, isn't quite as flexible as most kit zooms (which tend to start at 27 or 28mm equiv), but it does mean the camera package remains nice and small even with the zoom mounted.

The underlying specification is pretty similar to the NX10 - it utilizes the same 14.6 megapixel sensor, battery and lovely VGA-equivalent OLED screen but it gains a range of features and tweaks that NX10 owners will hope to receive in future firmware updates. However there's one notable omission - the NX100 doesn't have a built-in flash.

Probably the biggest gain is a feature Samsung has called i-Function. The two lenses launched alongside the NX100 - there's a 20mm F2.8 prime as well as the 20-50mm - both feature an 'iFn' button on their left flanks that allow the focus rings to be used to control various camera functions. Depending on shooting mode iFn can be used to adjust shutter speed, aperture and exposure compensation with the option to add ISO and white balance, depending on how you plan to use the camera.

In addition there are a series of changes that help make the camera more customizable - the option to select the highest ISO value the camera will use in Auto ISO, for instance. In themselves these are small changes but they're the kinds of options that allow users to better tailor the camera to their way of working, which we like to see.

The NX100's unadorned design makes it look rather large but it's of a similar size to the Olympus E-P2 (and, consequently Panasonic's GF1), despite using a larger sensor. It can't compete with the whittled-down minimalism of Sony's NEX-5 though.


When the standard kit zooms are taken into account, the NEX loses some of its size advantage, particularly against the Samsung and Olympus which have retractable zooms. However, while the Olympus and Sony both offer ranges of around 28-82mm equivalent, the Samsung offers the more restrictive 30-75mm. It's also worth noting that both the other combinations here offer image stabilization, either in the camera or in the zoom lens, which the Samsung doesn't.

Accessories

Alongside the NX100, Samsung has launched a range of accessories, including a flashgun, GPS unit and EVF that slots into the back of the camera.

	The SEF-15A flash has a guide number of 15 (at ISO 100), giving it a similar output to the built-in units in most DSLRs. It's powered by two AAA batteries and, though it can cover focal lengths as wide as 28mm equivalent, it cannot be tilted or bounced.
	Samsung has gone down the now familiar sub-hot shoe accessory port route.
	This allows connections of the optional EVF10 viewfinder. It's a 201,000 dot unit, giving an effective resolution of 320 x 224 pixels. It offers 0.83x magnification and 98% coverage.
	There's also a GPS unti available that slots into the hot shoe. There are a series of menu options on the camera to control it but, having only seen a mockup it's not clear the degree to which the unit will communicate with the camera.

Sony SLT Alpha A55 In-depth Review

Sony's latest interchangeable lens cameras, the SLT Alpha A33 and A55 represent a significant technological milestone - not just for Sony but for the enthusiast camera market as a whole.

The company has rejected the traditional DSLR design and instead created a hybrid that, like a compact camera, is from the ground up built around live view, but one that is also capable of offering full-time DSLR-style phase-detection autofocus. The combination means they can offer features such as phase-detection AF during movie recording and extremely fast continuous shooting rates (10 frames per second on the A55), previously unthinkable at this price.

This is made possible by adopting an approach that has more in common with a mirrorless camera (like the Panasonic G2, for example) than an SLR by removing the bits that pretty much define such cameras: the optical viewfinder and moving mirror.

The designation 'SLT' stands for single lens translucent and it's the 'translucent' bit that's the key to what differentiates these new models both from conventional DSLRs and mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. The SLTs do have mirrors, but they're mirrors that let the majority of the light pass straight through to the sensor, rather than having to swing out of the way to allow exposure. As a result they are fixed in position, always reflecting a portion of the light emerging from the back of the lens onto a phase-detection AF array housed in the top of the camera. (A newly-developed 15-point array in the case of these two cameras).

The A33 features the same 14 million APS HD CMOS sensor as the NEX-3 and NEX-5, but the sensor in the A55 is brand new, with 16.2 million effective pixels - Sony's highest-resolution APS-C format sensor yet. In another first for Sony's large-body interchangeable lens models, both cameras can shoot movie files as well, at 1080p HD resolution. Technically this review was conducted with a SLT A55V: the GPS-enabled variant of the camera that will be sold in most markets - only in a handful of countries (notably Japan), will a non-GPS version of the A55 be sold.

Key Features / What's new?

The mirror in the A55 is semi-transparent. According to Sony, it allows approximately 70% of the light that strikes it straight through to the 16.2MP CMOS imaging sensor. The remaining proportion is reflected upwards to a large 15-point phase detection AF array. This equates to a roughly 1/3 EV reduction in light transmission for live view/image capture but means the AF sensor is always receiving light.

This isn't an entirely new idea - fixed, semi-transparent mirrors have been built into SLRs before, but the system in the A33 and A55 is a major new development. What makes the A33 and A55 unique is that they can maintain phase-detection AF at all times, even during an exposure.

They manage this by removing the optical viewfinder entirely and only having to direct light to the phase-detection AF sensor array. For packaging reasons this has been moved from its conventional position at the base of the camera's mirror box, to its roof. Roughly 30% of the light that strikes the main mirror is reflected upwards, onto the AF sensor array. Meanwhile, in the absense of an optical finder, the main imaging sensor provides a full-time live view image via an electronic viewfinder in its place.

There is still a conventional mechanical shutter so operation isn't silent, however.

In detail

The optical system of the A33 and A55 is unique, and represents a significant step forwards from conventional SLR design. Both cameras are built around semi-transparent mirrors, which allow light to pass through them, for the purposes of live view and exposure, but also reflect a portion of the light onto a new phase-detection AF array. Here's a detailed look at this and other new technology used in the SLT A33 and A55.

In fact, only around 30% of the light which strikes it is reflected (onto the A55's phase-detection AF sensor) and approximately 70% of the light which strikes it is transmitted...	*...a change of camera position reveals the mirror as a 'window' through which around 70% of the light which enters the camera passes - falling on the imaging sensor.

The A55's EVF is a Sony-manufactured, 1.44 million dot field-sequential display which provides a 100% field of view. This image shows a simulated view through the finder when shooting in the 16:9 aspect ratio.	In a first for Sony's Alpha series the 912k dot TruBlack LCD on the rear of the A55 is fully articulated.

The A55 features Sony's established Super SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system to reduce the effect of camera shake. Sony claims a benefit of between 2.5 and 4 stops in useable shutter speed.	The A55 has a built-in GPS receiver, which can automatically tag photographs with location data. This data can then be used in conjunction with Google Maps using the supplied Image Data Lightbox software.

If there's been one welcome development in 2009, it's the rise of relatively compact cameras with large sensors (i.e. APS-C, or the smaller Four Thirds size). For a long time Sigma seemed to be the only company willing to take a gamble on there being a genuine market for such beasts, starting with the slightly rough-and-ready DP1 (released in March last year), which was followed up by the much-improved DP2 earlier this year. But then Olympus launched its retro-styled Micro Four Thirds E-P1, Panasonic replied with the GF1, and into a sector which, if not yet exactly crowded, is at least starting to look like if can be described as 'burgeoning', there now comes the Leica X1.

The mere mention of the name 'Leica' causes certain photographers' hearts to beat just a little bit faster; this sole survivor of the once-mighty German camera industry is one of the very few genuine 'heritage' brands left. The company's long-running reputation for sheer engineering quality and optically-superb lenses is legendary - many a budding snapper has aspired to own a 'real' Leica, eventually. Unfortunately though, this quality is (inevitably) accompanied by heart-stopping prices, meaning such aspirations are often left unfulfilled for many years.

Perhaps with a mind to providing an 'entry-level' option that is more affordable and attainable, the X1 promises to make Leica's inimitable design and quality accessible to more digital shooters than ever before. It follows in the tradition of the company's premium compacts for 35mm film such as the CM, offering a fixed prime lens, analogue-style controls and premium build quality. Of course this being a Leica the lens is all - the Elmarit 24mm 1:2.8 ASPH is made up of 8 elements in 6 groups, and includes an aspheric element to minimize aberrations. It sits in front of a 12Mp CMOS APS-C (1.5x crop) sensor, giving an angle of view equivalent to a 35mm lens on full frame. Viewing is via a 2.7", 230,000 pixel LCD on the rear - there's no built-in optical finder.

The X1 has clearly been designed as an instrument for taking photographs, pure and simple, and features a pared-down, traditionalist design in service of that goal. Shutter speed and aperture are controlled by dials on the top plate, and all other major shooting settings are directly accessible from buttons on the back. This is a design that utterly rejects fripperies in the quest for uncomplicated functionality; if you're after an aquarium mode, HD movies or background music for your slide shows, you'll need to look elsewhere.

Of course the X1 is still a Leica, and so will not by any means be cheap, which means it's going to have to deliver some pretty compelling results to persuade the less-emotionally driven buyer to hand over the wallet-slimming sum of money required to own one. So let's take a close look to see what it can do, and find out whether it succeeds in this goal.

Compared to Leica M9

First of all we'll look at the X1 alongside it's big brother, the M9. These two cameras are very different, of course, here we're seeing how the X1 inherits much of its looks and design from the classic rangefinder.

The X1 bears a distinct family resemblance to its stablemate the M9 - sharing key design cues such as top-plate control dials (for both shutter speed and aperture), rounded edges and the steel gray paint finish. It's an undeniably pretty little thing, with its distinctly 'retro' design and two-tone finish.



The rear layout is also very similar to that of the M9 - indeed if anything, it's a bit more coherent and conventional (for example the 'set' button resides in the middle of the four-way controller, just like on almost every other camera currently made). All key shooting settings are directly accessible by the press of a button.

Compared to Sigma DP2

The most similar camera to the X1 currently available is undoubtedly the Sigma DP2. Both are unashamedly 'photographer's compacts' with the bare minimum of features, built around large sensors and high quality fixed F2.8 lenses with full manual control. You can buy a DP2, its 28mm-lensed twin the DP1, and pretty well all of their accessories (optical viewfinders, lens hoods etc) and still have change from the price of the X1.

The X1 is slightly wider-bodied than the Sigma DP2 and DP1 (by about 3/8" or 1cm), mainly due to the rounded ends. The design philosophies are chalk and cheese, with the curvaceous, dial-operated Leica standing in stark contrast to the boxy black button-driven Sigma.



The rear layouts are subtly different too - there's a similar number of buttons, but whereas the Sigma places absolutely everything under the control of the right thumb, the Leica has an SLR-style row of buttons down the left side of the LCD. The X1 uses a focusing dial similar to the DP2's which sits under your thumb on the upper right of the camera, and finds space for another vertical control dial on the rear too.

Compared to Panasonic DMC-GF1

The other cameras the X1 will be competing with are the latest compact Micro Four Thirds designs, the Panasonic GF1 and Olympus Pen E-P1/E-P2. Here we're comparing against the GF1, which offers the more similar feature set (including a pop-up flash) - indeed given Leica's long-running cooperation with Panasonic, this is the camera many people expected to tweak and release under its own brand instead of the X1. The Pens, in contrast, have no flash but include in-body image stabilization and 'retro' styling (although a distinctly modern control layout).

The X1 is quite similar in size to the Panasonic GF1, but a little wider and lower in profile. The Leica has a larger sensor, but the ace up the Panasonic's sleeve is clearly its ability to accept interchangeable lenses, including the slimline 20mm F1.7 seen here (which we like a lot).



Curiously, the X1 uses a 4:3 LCD to view images from its 3:2 sensor, while the GF1 employs a 3:2 LCD and a 4:3 sensor. The GF1's control layout is again much more 'electronic'; the X1 will appeal to those looking for a more straightforward, traditional design.

Compared to Canon Powershot G11

The Canon Powershot G11 isn't a direct competitor of the X1 as such - it's a small sensor camera with a useful 28-140mm zoom range - but it's the latest in a long line that's been a perennial favorite amongst enthusiast photographers, as a capable camera which can be carried around everywhere and fits in a coat pocket. This comparison shows that, despite its much larger sensor, the X1 isn't really much different in size to Canon's top-end compact.

The X1 is much lower in profile than the G11, but again it's rather wider. Most notably, though, the X1's sensor is almost 9x the area of the G11's, in a body that's essentially just as portable.



The G11 also uses lots of dials, but assigns them to completely different functions. Shutter speed and aperture are set EOS-style using the rear control wheel, with exposure compensation and ISO getting their own dedicated dials. In contrast, on the X1 these functions are controlled by pushing a button then spinning the rear wheel.

Olympus E-P2 Quick Review

This is the second of our new 'Quick Reviews.' We will be using this format for cameras that are operationally similar and identical in terms of output to models we've already reviewed. We test to confirm the image quality is identical (noise tests and shots of our 'compared to' studio scene at all ISOs), then concentrate the review on the differences between the two cameras. To learn everything about the camera you are interested in we recommend reading not only the Quick Review but also the full review of the sister camera - in this case the Olympus E-P1.

Ten months passed between the announcement of the Micro Four Thirds mirrorless interchangeable lens format and Olympus unveiling its first model. For much of this time Panasonic had been selling its DSLR-like G1 while all we'd see from Olympus was a design mock-up it admitted wasn't at that time feasible.

But in June 2009, Olympus finally revealed the camera responsible for our most-read preview ever - the E-P1. The company was able to do what very few of the current big players could - build on a history of compact photographers' cameras. And, in doing so, appeared to provide the camera we'd been asking manufacturers to make for many years - a small camera with a good level of photographic control and a large sensor (only Sigma had really tried this before).

The E-P1 managed to fit most of the company's excellent E-620 DSLR into a comparatively small, beautifully styled metal case in a way that appealed to far beyond the camera-geek demographic. It was not without its problems, however - the main one being its autofocus system that was rather sluggish when compared to Panasonic's G-series. Also its control system, inherited wholesale from the E-System Four Thirds DSLRs, didn't always perfectly translate to the way its buttons are laid out (The newer, simpler E-PL1 and firmware updated Panasonics make this more apparent than it was at the time of review).

Then, a little under five months later, (and just a few weeks after Epson announced a high-res viewfinder display), Olympus launched the E-P2. The only major difference is the addition of an accessory port at the back of the camera underneath the flash hot shoe mount. This may not sound like a big deal but it does allow users to address one of the criticisms we leveled at the E-P1 - the lack of viewfinder and the difficulty of shooting in bright light that this brings.

Olympus has also been working hard boosting the AF speed of the PEN series and this quick review is based on the latest version which promises the fastest focusing yet across the whole range (E-P1, E-P2 and E-PL1). However, while it has been designing its new lenses, specifically the 9-18mm wide angle and 14-150mm superzoom, with single, lightweight internal focus groups for fast focusing, the company has not redesigned its 14-42mm kit zoom to offer the same advantages.

Only the color scheme and the extra lump under the flash hot-shoe give away that the camera on the right is an E-P2, rather than is predecessor on the left.


From the back, the reason for the higher hot-shoe becomes apparent - Olympus has had to make room for the accessory port which can be used to add the VF-2 electronic viewfinder or SEMA-1 stereo mic adapter.

Compared to Olympus E-P1

As already discussed, the differences between the E-P1 and 2 are subtle. Over the next two pages we'll look at the differences and test whether there's any difference in image quality.

As we've already seen, the only significant difference (beyond the color) between the E-P1 and E-P2 is the bulge beneath the hot shoe that provides space for the accessory port. Ergonomics are identical, with a good thumb roller (the silver rectangle visible at the top right-hand corner), and a tiny, less useful dial around the edge of the four-way controller.

Beyond the physical distinction, there's almost nothing to set the two models apart. The E-P2 offers two additional Art Filters (the mock tilt-shift 'diorama' mode and 'cross-process') and gains a menu option to adjust the brightness of the EVF but that's it. You can almost think of this as an E-P1.1 that needed a more marketable name.

VF-2 Viewfinder

Although the accessory port can be used for a variety of add-ons - an adapter for an external stereo microphone being the other option currently available - its main use is likely to be to allow the use of the VF-2 viewfinder. This is partly because an external viewfinder has the most broad appeal but also because the VF-2 unit is superb.

The VF-2 offers the same 800x600 pixel resolution as the unit that appears in the Panasonic G1, GH1 and G2 but makes each pixel up of three dots (red, green and blue), rather than the Panasonic's field sequential display that draws each color one after the other. This gives the Olympus the advantage that it doesn't suffer from the 'tearing' that can occur if you move the Panasonics quickly (meaning that the camera is trying to draw a slightly different scene by the time is updates each different color, giving vertical objects a red, green and blue edge for a split second).

The detail and clarity of the VF-2 are excellent and even skeptics of slotting a large accessory onto the top of a camera that's meant to be small are easily won-over. The ability to remove the viewfinder and carry it only when you need it, for working in bright light when the rear screen might not be visible or when you want the steadier shooting position that a viewfinder brings, justify the approach. In principle it also means that only customers who want to pay for the viewfinder have to pay for it.

Viewfinder size

One figure hidden away in every SLR's spec is the size of the viewfinder (often in a format that makes comparison between competing models impossible). The size of the viewfinder is a key factor in the usability of an SLR - the bigger it is, the easier it is to frame and focus your shots, and the more enjoyable and involving process it is.

Because of the way viewfinders are measured (using a fixed lens, rather than a lens of equivalent magnification), you also need to take the sensor size into account, so the numbers in the diagram below are the manufacturer's specified magnifications divided by the respective 'crop factors'. As you can see, the VF-2's 1.15x magnification (0.58x once crop factor is taken into account), makes it bigger than most APS-C cameras and equal to largest optical viewfinder that Olympus makes - that of the high-end E-3 DSLR.

As you can see the VF-2 offers a slightly larger view than in the Canon 550D (itself one of the largest in its class). This is a good, large viewfinder with a decent resolution.

สังเกตได้ว่าสามารถจับตัวกล้องได้ในมือข้างเดียวแบบสบาย ๆ (ถ้าเลนส์ตัวใหญ่ ๆ มีหวังเมื่อยมือตายเลย)

ในส่วนของโหมดการใช้งานมีให้เลือกหลากหลายมากขึ้นแล้วเลือกใช้งานได้ ทันที โดยงานี้จะเพิ่มความสะดวกในโหมดถ่ายภาพวีดีโอ และ B เพิ่มขึ้นมาให้ใช้งานทำให้เราใช้งานได้คล่องตัว

Conclusion Canon EOS 60D

Preview based on a pre-production Pentax K-5

In terms of operation and design the new K5 is all but identical to the K-7. For this reason, in this preview we have concentrated on the differences between the two cameras. For a fuller view of the K-5's body design and operation we therefore recommend you not only read this brief hands-on, but also the relevant sections in our full review of the Pentax K-7.

When the K10D was launched in September 2006 it was Pentax's first foray into the 'enthusiast' DSLR market, competing at the time with rivals such as the Canon EOS 30D and the Nikon D200. Four years later in 2010 the enthusiast sector of the market is as competitive as ever and the K-5, Pentax' latest offering to the 'serious amateur photographer', will have to fight for consumers' attention with the likes of the Canon 7D, Nikon D7000 and D300S, and the Olympus E-5. At a launch RRP of $1600 (body only) the K-5 is currently on a similar price level as its main competitors but we would expect the street price to go down sooner rather than later.

At first sight the K-5 is virtually indistinguishable from its predecessor the K-7 (in some markets the K-7 will remain in the Pentax line alongside the K-5). Apart from the name on the front and an additional 'Flex' label on the customizable RAW button there is no visual difference between the two cameras. There is more novelty to be found under the hood than on the outside but nevertheless the K-5 is a relatively modest upgrade rather than a quantum leap. Arguably the most notable new component is the 16.3 megapixel CMOS sensor. It brings with it a higher maximum sensitivity (ISO 51200 in expanded mode, the highest on a APS-C camera so far), faster continuous shooting (7.0 fps vs the K-7's 5.2) and a 1080p full HD video mode (the K-7 offered a rather non-standard 1536 x 1024 pixels maximum video resolution).

Other, more minor improvements include an upgraded SAFOX AF system (wider coverage of the AF points and improved speed) and a few new digital filters and custom image modes. Nevertheless, existing K-7 users will no doubt require very little adjustment time if they decide to upgrade to the new model.

In our Pentax K-7 review the camera's high-ISO output was one of our very few points of criticism. We'll have to wait for our full review of the K-5 to find out if the new sensor is capable of erasing that point from our cons list but until then, read through our brief hands-on preview to get an idea what's new on the K-5 and how it differs from the K-7.

The K-5 has exactly the same dimensions as its predecessor, the K-7. It is chunkier than Pentax's new upper entry-level DSLR the K-r (pictured here on the left) but still relatively compact for a camera in its class.

Design

The K-5 is visually almost indistinguishable from the K-7. The body shape, materials and control layout are all identical which is not a bad thing. When we reviewed the Pentax K-7 we were impressed by the reassuring solidity of its magnesium-alloy body and the same is true of the new model. Despite its relatively small dimensions, the K5's excellent build quality and well thought-out user interface means that it feels like a professional tool and is, in terms of build and ergonomics, up there with the very best in its class. What's new

Like most other recently introduced DSLRs the Pentax K-5 doesn't offer any radically new 'killer' features but concentrates on improving what is already there. The most important new component on the K-5 is arguably the 16.3 megapixel sensor but there is also an upgraded AF system and some new digital filters and menu options, some of which we have already seen on the recently introduced upper entry-level K-r. You can find some more detail on some of the K-5's new technology below.

The K-5 captures its images on a new 16.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. We suspect it's the same sensor that we've seen in some other recently released cameras. Sensitivity can be extended up to an astonishing ISO 51200 (equivalent).	The new SAFOX IX+ AF system comes, like its predecessor, with 11 AF points (9 cross-type) but the sensors now cover a wider area. Pentax also claims the AF-speed has been improved.



The K-5 offers full HD 1080p video recording at 25 frames per second. Custom image modes and digital filters can be applied to video footage. There is also a socket for an stereo microphone (sold separately).


High-ISO noise reduction is customizable. You can either apply the same level of noise reduction across the entire sensitivity range or select a specific level for each individual ISO setting.


With the extended bracketing function you can, along with the exposure, bracket a whole range of imaging parameters.	Like the K-r the K-5 comes with a cross process mode with a number of options. Cross processing mode is designed to mimic the results you might get when processing a film in a chemical solution intended for a different type of film.


The K-5 offers nine custom Image modes including the new Bleach Bypass. The number of digital filters has also been increased. There are now 18 filters in total including new Sketch and Posterization modes.	In live view there are now three different grid overlays to choose from.

Ricoh GXR/A12 50mm Review

Review based on a production Ricoh GXR body with firmware v1.05 and A12 50mm lens unit with firmware v1.05

This is the first of two reviews of the GXR; as each module is effectively a completely different camera we've decided to treat them as such and produce separate reviews. This review covers the GXR with the A12 50mm equiv f2.5 (12MP APS-C sensor) module, the next will cover the GXR/S10 24-70mm equiv (10Mp 1/1.7" sensor) combo. The first half of both reviews is the same, covering the GXR camera body and system.

In the short, frenetic history of the digital camera it has often been the smaller, less high profile manufacturers who have taken all the risks and experimented with more unconventional designs and solutions. For despite all the technological advances in the last decade the majority of digital cameras have designs that follow the same basic blueprint as their analog predecessors: they're essentially the same cameras with a sensor in the place of film.

This is especially true in the interchangeable lens camera sector, where the big players (coincidentally those who led the market in the days of film), hampered by the need (desire) to retain compatibility with their legacy analog systems, produce digital SLRs that would feel reassuringly familiar to any photographer from the late '80s or early '90s who by choice or circumstance had missed out on the digital revolution.

Last year saw the first serious challenges to the dominance of the single lens reflex (a design that can trace it roots back over 100 years, and that hasn't changed fundamentally since the 1950s) in the interchangeable lens camera market - thanks to the introduction of Micro Four Thirds by Olympus and Panasonic. Since then Samsung has also introduced a very similar system ('NX') which is based on a larger APS-C sensor.

So when we first heard from Ricoh that they wanted to come and show us a new system camera we presumed it too was going to be variation on the 'mirrorless' design. Then we started to get hints that it was actually a totally new idea (or, as mentioned at the bottom of this page, a very old idea resurrected).

The interchangeable lens unit camera

Where Micro Four Thirds and similar systems aim to cut bulk by removing the mirror box, which slims down the camera body and somewhat reduces the size of the lenses (though by how much depends on the sensor size used), they still end up pretty big once you add zoom lenses (and if we're talking about long zooms or telephotos the advantage is all but lost - large sensors require large lenses). Thus the idea that these 'hybrid' cameras can offer SLR quality and versatility combined with compact camera size is simply not possible.

Ricoh's answer to this problem is, to say the least, novel. Rather than selling a camera body with a fixed sensor, the GXR system uses interchangeable lens/sensor units - every lens comes in a sealed unit complete with sensor, shutter, aperture, processing engine (there's also one in the camera body) and the motors necessary to focus the lens (and drive the zoom mechanism if present). You are, essentially, buying a new 'camera' every time you buy the lens: the GXR body is little more than a shell containing the screen, card slot, controls and flash. This radical rethink of the 'interchangeable lens' has some important consequences:

Different lens units can have different sensor sizes and technologies (CCD or CMOS, for example)
By using a smaller (compact camera) sensor the GXR system can offer very small zooms
Lens units can be designed for specialist applications (video optimized lens and sensor for example)
The overall performance of the system is essentially defined by the lens unit, not the body
Each lens has its own leaf shutter - which will generally be quieter, and offer faster flash sync than the focal-plane shutters used by Micro Four Thirds

The GXR lens unit slides into the body and clicks into place


The GXR launched with two very different optional lens modules. Although the body is very thin, how pocketable the camera is depends entirely on the lens module mounted: the 24-70mm-equivalent zoom unit maintains the low profile when not in use (it collapses when powered down) but the A12 50mm-equivalent prime is a fairly large unit.

The GXR body (which is like a slightly over-sized GR or GX model) can thus be anything from a high speed compact super zoom (a la Panasonic TZ series) to an APS-C compact with a fast prime lens (think Sigma DP2 or Leica X1) simply by swapping lens units. By replacing the lens unit with a compact projector, printer or high capacity storage device it could stop being a camera completely, at least that's the theory.

The standard components of an interchangeable lens camera are split between the GXR body and the lens unit in such a way that the performance of the camera (focus speed, image quality and so on) is to a large degree defined by the latter, with the body taking care of operational aspects and the actual process of taking the picture. Both camera and lens unit have their own Ricoh Smooth Image Engine processor (complete with RAM), though it appears the one in the lens unit is only used for capture and to get raw data off the sensor and convert it from analog to digital before it is sent to the body for processing and file creation. A fast, wide data bus connects the two halves together. To get a rough idea how the components and tasks are split see the table below (or check out the block diagram on the next page).

Each lens unit contains instructions and parameters specific to its own sensor and optics, meaning that different lens units will change slightly the features, behavior and performance of the camera body when attached. Some of the lens unit dependant attributes (that we currently know of or can deduce) include:

Image processing parameters
Noise reduction
Menu options - lens units define what menus you see
Distortion correction (and, presumably, other lens corrections)
Shutter speed and aperture ranges
Program mode parameters ('program lines')
Specific features (manual focus ring, sensor-shift stabilization etc)
Focus speed
Continuous shooting speed
Buffer (no of frames and speed)
Movie capture capabilities (resolution and frame rate)

Essentially, as mentioned elsewhere, with each lens unit you're getting a completely new camera with very different capabilities. Whether this is a good thing or not is going to depend on how well Ricoh does with its stated aim of using highly optimized lens/sensor combinations, and how much it is prepared to invest in producing a range of options that's compelling enough to tempt buyers away from more conventional systems such as Micro Four Thirds.

In the first part of this review (pages 1-12) we will have a close look at the GXR's body, features and user interface. In the second part (studio and real-life tests) we focus on the GXR with the A12 50mm module. The tests with the S10 module will be published in a separate review.

Interchangeable lens units

The GXR is a totally new style of camera in which the image sensor, lens, and image processing engine are part of the interchangeable units, so there is no image sensor in the body itself. According to Ricoh this brings several benefits over conventional SLR designs (and their newer 'mirrorless' equivalents): Portability, Image quality (optimum lens/sensor combinations) and Expandability (the possibility to add other units to the body, such as a compact projector or high capacity storage unit). Having a totally sealed unit also means that dust ingress simply cannot be a problem.

It's not a totally new idea - back in 1998 Minolta launched an interchangeable lens unit camera (the Dimage EX-1500), but it's certainly like nothing else on the market today. The key points are simple: the lens and sensor are bought together in a single, interchangeable sealed unit, with different units containing different sensors, up to a maximum APS-C (the same as most mid-range digital SLRs) - smaller sensors for zooms, larger sensors for primes. You're basically buying a new camera with every lens (tempting me to start referring to the GXR as an 'interchangeable camera' camera).

The diagram above should give you some idea of how the various processes and parts of a modern digital camera are split between the lens unit and body. In addition to the actual optics, the lens unit contains the CCD or CMOS sensor, focus and zoom motors, an image processing engine, buffer, gyro sensor (for image stabilization) and a fast, wide data path to the body. The raw data is then passed to the body (which contains all the other stuff you'd normally find in a camera), where it's processed (if you're shooting in JPEG mode) and saved to a file on the card.



	The slide mount is simple and solid, but feels totally alien to anyone who has spent a lifetime with bayonet mount lenses.

The first lens units

The GXR body doesn't even qualify as a camera without the addition of a lens unit, and at launch Ricoh is offering two of them; one sporting a 50mm (equivalent) F2.5 macro prime and a 12MP CMOS APS-C sensor and the other a 24-70mm (equiv) F2.5-4.4mm with a small (1.175") 10MP CCD (at which point it's pretty close to being a bigger, more expensive version of Ricoh's own GX200 compact). It's also promising two more to be released during the course of 2010 - a 28-300 mm-equivalent F3.5-5.6 VC which uses a back-illuminated CMOS sensor, and a 28mm-equivalent F2.5 wideangle with a a 12Mp APS-C sensor.

Because the units contain both lens and sensor, they're designated in a fashion which describes both. The naming convention is fairly simple once you know how:

The sensor is described using a letter for its size (A for APS-C, S for 1/1.7", and P for 1/2.4", at least so far) plus a number for its megapixel count.
Next comes the lens's focal length, expressed as a 35mm-equivalent (which is sure to annoy the pedantic, but allows easy comparison between units), followed as usual by its aperture.

Hence the A12 50mm F2.5 Macro uses a 12Mp APS-C sensor and a 50mm-equivalent F2.5 lens (which actually has a real focal length of 33mm).

The size of the lens - and thus the camera - is down to the size of the sensor inside: on the left is the 24-70mm (small CCD) zoom (collapsed - it extends when in use) and on the right the 50mm (large sensor) prime. Both have a maximum F2.5 aperture. Size or quality: you decide.

The S10 zoom lens accepts Ricoh's wide and tele converters. Other options include a clever lens cap (LC-2) that opens when the lens extends and a lens hood (HA-3). We didn't get to see either of these 'in the flesh'

The A12 50mm module has a neat built-in lens hood, and also accepts 40.5mm threaded screw-in filters.

Preview based on a pre-production GH2

When Panasonic first launched the GH1, its second Micro Four Thirds camera, it was widely seen as simply being a G1 with video shooting and a considerably more expensive kit lens. And, if your primary concern was stills photography then this wasn't an entirely unreasonable assessment. However, its real appeal was not that it had video, but that it offered what was, at the time, some of the most flexible, high quality video available. Again, the 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 kit zoom may not have been cheap but it had been specifically designed and built with fast, quiet autofocus and stepless aperture control to allow AF during movie shooting and exposure changes without sudden changes in brightness.

Now that the G2 (along with the majority of contemporary cameras) is able to capture HD video, the distinctions between just being able to shoot HD and to really control it become more apparent. Stills shooters may get some advantage from the new, higher resolution sensor but the main differences between the GH2 and G2 are the ability to control the movie shooting process (both in terms of frame rate and shutter speed).

In the twenty five months since Olympus and Panasonic jointly announced the Micro Four Thirds standard there have been eight models launched to date, seven of which share the same 12MP sensor. The only exception was the GH1 which, despite its 12MP output actually featured a 14MP sensor. The sensor was slightly larger than the format's imaging circle, which allowed it to deliver images in different aspect ratios while retaining the same image diagonal. And now the GH2 follows the same pattern, shooting 16MP images using its brand-new, similarly over-sized 18MP sensor.

This sensor is capable of much greater output speed than its predecessor, bringing a host of benefits. Videographers will see an improvement in the quality of the highest quality output - the 1080i output is derived from 60p or 50p capture, rather than doubled-up from 24p or 25p on the GH1. However, the faster readout also means the AF system can more frequently check the accuracy of its focus, meaning faster autofocus (on lenses that can respond quickly enough). Finally, the faster readout means the live view is updated 60 times a second (rather than 24fps displayed at 60hz), giving a smoother viewing experience with less tearing.

The viewfinder has also been slightly widened - it now shows 852 x 600 pixels (rather than 800 across) to allow it to show 16:9 and 3:2 previews without the need for such extensive cropping as before.

The G2 alongside one of its current nearest competitors - the Canon EOS 60D. The considerably smaller size and bulk of the GH2 is obvious in this view - one of the advantages of a mirrorless design.

Compared to GH1 - key differences

The GH2 might look very similar to a casual glance but there are some major differences between the two models. Let's have a look at the main changes:

Key feature comparison (vs G2 vs GH1)

Like the GH1, the GH2 is distinguished from its G-series contemporaries by its video shooting capabilities. The GH2 is a far more serious video shooting tool than the G2, and indeed the majority of its competitors - both mirrorless and DSLR. The GH2 offers a similar video specification to the GH1 but with one important difference - the sensor no longer doubles-up its sensor output in order to create its highest-speed video (the GH1 sensor could capture at 24 or 25 fps, which was then put out as 60i or 50i footage). Instead, the latest sensor can capture progressive (whole frames) at 60 or 50 fps. Its output is still limited to 60i or 50i because there are no common ways to distribute 60p or 50p footage, but this should certainly improve the output quality. The GH2 also has the ability to save footage at a different frame rate from the one captured - allowing slow-motion or high-speed effects.

From a still photography point of view the GH2 brings very little that is 'new' to the G-series apart from its increased resolution - up to 16 from 12.1MP. This makes the GH2 the highest resolution camera in Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds range, and a maximum ISO of 12,800 makes it (at least on paper) the most versatile too. Like the G2, the GH2's LCD screen is touch-sensitive, but also like the G2, it is not 'mandatory'. In other words, GH1 users upgrading to the GH2 with no interest in experimenting with the touch technology can more or less ignore it if they wish.

From the front, the main difference between the GH2 and G2 is that the former is slightly taller, and more of a 'classic' SLR shape. The G2 is a noticeably squatter when viewed in direct comparison, but the family resemblance is unmistakable.

From the top, the GH2 is very similar to the G2. The most obvious difference is the stereo microphone which dominates the top of the flash housing of the GH2 (the G2 makes do with a single, tiny mic aperture just forward of the AF mode switch). Both cameras have a button for direct movie shooting, but whereas the G2 has a dedicated iA mode button, in its place the GH2 has a customizable 'Fn' button.

Stop the rumor mill - the ~~D95~~ D7000 is here! The much-anticipated ~~successor to the D90~~ new DSLR isn't quite what a lot of internet pundits expected, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a lot to get excited about if you're a D90 user impatient for an upgrade. In fact, that's exactly what the D7000 is - an upgrade option for D90 and D5000 users, which occupies a new position in Nikon's DSLR lineup, between the D90 and D300S.

Although ergonomically, the D7000 is a very close match for the D90, its overall 'feel' is considerably more serious, thanks to a magnesium alloy body shell and thicker rubber coating on the hand grip and rear of the camera. In terms of its specification, the D7000 actually outguns the D300S in many respects, and at 16.2Mp it offers the second highest resolution of any Nikon DSLR, behind only the 24Mp D3X. All of these pixels are packed onto a newly developed CMOS sensor, which is almost certainly the same or very similar to that in the Sony Alpha SLT-A55. As well as extra resolution, the new sensor also offers a higher 'standard' ISO span of 100-6400, expandable up to the equivalent of ISO 25,600.

The D7000's AF and metering systems are also new, and represent a significant upgrade to those used in the D90. The new camera boasts a 39-point AF array with 9 cross-type AF points and works in collaboration with a new 2016-pixel RGB metering sensor to allow 3D AF tracking (essentially tracking by subject color, explained here). Other changes include the same combined live view/movie switch control as the recently announced D3100, and a significantly upgraded movie specification, up to 'full HD' - 1920x1080 resolution at 24fps. Unlike the D90, the D7000 can also maintain AF during live view and movie shooting, thanks to its AF-F ('full time') AF mode.

D90 owners have been waiting for a replacement camera for a while, and although the D90 isn't set for retirement quite yet, the D7000 certainly represents a compelling upgrade. We've been using a pre-production D7000 for a few days - just long enough to compile our impressions into a 7-page hands-on preview article. Read on for an in-depth look at Nikon's newest DSLR...

Positioned alongside the D90 and D300S, the D7000 is clearly a lot closer to the former than the latter in terms of its size and control layout. The similarities between the D90 and D7000 don't run much deeper than the surface level though - where specifications are concerned, on paper, the D7000 at least matches and frequently surpasses the abilities of the D300S in several key areas.

Nikon D7000 and Nikon D90: Key differences

The D7000 sits above the D90 in Nikon's current lineup, and as befits its new position in the range, the D7000 combines elements of the D90 with elements of the D300S - Nikon's current APS-C flagship. The most obvious physical clue to its new position is a magnesium alloy body shell, which up to now has been reserved for Nikon's top-end APS-C and full frame cameras.

'Under the hood' though the differences are legion - a new 16.2MP CMOS sensor, dual card slots, a new 39-point AF array, 'true' HD movie mode with full-time AF and more customization options, some of which are inherited from Nikon's professional DSLRs. Like the D90, the D7000 supports AF with Nikon's older AF and AF-D lenses (lower-end models are limited to compatibility with AF-S and AF-I optics only) but additionally, because the D7000 has an Ai indexing tab on its lens mount, up to 9 'non-CPU' lenses can also be registered with the camera.

This allows the use of virtually any Ai specification or later lens to be used in aperture priority or manual mode with the P7000, with almost no loss of functionality (apart from AF). Novice DSLR users might never look beyond the horizons offered by their kit lenses, but for the enthusiast, legacy support like this could well be a deal-breaker.

The overall dimensions of the D7000 are very similar to the older D90, but the heavier, magnesium alloy body shell and thicker rubber on the hand grip lend it a noticeably more 'serious' feel.

Ergonomically, the D7000 and D90 are quite similar, and as you can see from this view of the back of the two cameras, in terms of its control layout, the D7000 is very close to the D90. Some controls have changed slightly (the D90's 'Lv' button becomes a spring-loaded switch for example) but the number of control points is the same and everything is basically in the same place.

สเปคที่เปลี่ยนไป และบอดี้ที่เปลี่ยนไป ทำให้ใครที่จะเล่นกล้องระดับ Top ตัวคูณ ต้องคิดหนักมิใช่น้อย

หลังจากล่ำลือมานานตั้งแต่ Codename D95 หรือ D90s ตอนนี้ก็ปรากฏโฉมในนาม Nikon D7000 อย่างที่ได้กล่าวไป พิกเซลให้มาพอไหมกับ 16.2 ล้าน โฟกัส 39 จุด รัวได้ 6 fps บอดี้แมกนีเซียมบลาๆ งานนี้ต้องเรียกว่าออกทีหลังดังหว่าเห็นๆ เพราะสเปคค่อนข้างหนักหน่วง จนแทบไม่ต้องพูดถึง 60D ที่ออกมาจอบิดหัวหมุน บอดี้พลาสติก ซึ่งชนกันก็น็อคเห็นๆ

สเปคที่เปลี่ยนไป และบอดี้ทีี่เปลี่ยนไป ทำให้ใครที่จะเล่นกล้องระดับ Top ตัวคูณ ต้องคิดหนักมิใช่น้อย ลองดูสเปคแบบคร่าวๆ กันเลยครับ ขอขอบคุณภาพประกอบสวยๆ จาก Dpreview.com มากๆ ครับ ราคาโดยประมาณคือ 45000 บาทเฉพาะบอดี้ ถ้าเลนส์ด้วยก็น่าจะหลุด 50000 อย่างแน่นอน ราคาก็จะไปขี่กับ D300s พอดี้พอดี

แน่นอนครับ การ์ดใส่ SD 2 ช่องคู่ เป็นอีกจุดขายที่ Nikon นำมาเสนอ ถามว่าสะดวกไม๊ สะดวกครับและดูมืออาชีพมากๆ โดยเฉพาะการที่ให้เลือกถ่ายภาพพร้อม Backup ลงอีกการ์ด เมื่อไหร่หนอค่ายแดงจะทำอย่างนี้บ้าง

บอดี้โดยรวมใหญ่กว่าเดิม จับกระชับมือ ขนาดมือฝรั่ง ยังดูเล็ก มือคนไทยคงพอดีๆ จอหลังละเอียดขึ้นตามสภาวะตลาด ช่องมองภาพ 100% คงจะเป็นสิ่งแปลกใหม่สำหรับสาวก D90 มิใช่น้อย

ขนาดและมิติต่างๆ หน้าตาหล่อมิใช่น้อย ปุ่มต่างๆ แยกออกมาชัดเจน

เปรียบเทียบกับ D90

บอดี้ใหญ่กว่าชาวบ้านเค้าเลยแฮะ

เทียบกันในกลุ่ม Nikon อ้วนอีกหน่อยก็จะเป็น D300s แล้ว

จอแบบ Matrix ไม่ได้เปลี่ยนแปลง Layout เท่าใดนัก ดูจากมือฝรั่งอยากเห็นตัวเป็นๆ เหมือนกัน อาจจะตัวไม่ใหญ่มากนัก แต่บอดี้แมกนีเซียมน่าจะทำให้ลุยๆ ได้มากกว่า D90 พอสมควร

แป้นหมุนแบบ 2 ชั้น ดูแปลกตามากกว่าเดิมหน่อยๆ โหมดซีนถูกจับรวมเอาไว้ ไม่โผล่มาเยอะๆ เหมือนคู่แข่ง ปุ่มแบบนี้เคยเห็นมาบ้างในตระกลูพวก D3 บัดนี้มาอยู่ในกล้องรุ่นนี้

เมนูและหน้าตาต่างๆ ยังคงคล้าย D90 อยู่ แต่เมนูด้านล่างเยอะขึ้นอย่างเห็นได้ชัด

Viewfinder 100% ความกว้างเฟรมเพิ่มขึ้นอีกนิดเป็น 0.63x

ดูกันชัดๆ อภิมหาจุดโฟกัส 39 จุด แม้แต่กล้อง 1Ds ก็หนาวๆ กันได้

ปุ่มถ่ายวิดีโออันนี้คล้ายหนอนไปหน่อย แต่ก็ดีกว่ากดยุ่งยากเหมือนตัวเก่าหล่ะครับ มองดีๆ ก็คล้ายๆ 7D นั่นเอง

สรุปสั้นๆ ง่ายๆ หลังจากอ่านสเปค ต้องถือว่า Nikon เองแก้มือมาดีหลายๆ จุด ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องของบอดี้ เซนเซอร์แบบใหม่ ถ่ายภาพต่อเนื่อง จุดโฟกัส วิวไฟน์เดอร์ 100% ระบบถ่ายภาพวิดีโอ ใส่เมมโมรี่การ์ดคู่ กันฝุ่นละอองถ่ายได้ในทุกสภาพอากาศ งานนี้ 60D คงอาจจะไม่ใช่คู่แข่ง ซึ่งกล้องสเปคขนาดนี้ ราคาเปิดตัวก็คงจะไม่ได้ถูกแน่ๆ แต่ด้วยเทคโนโลยีใหม่หลายๆ อย่าง ที่แม้กระทั่งกล้องสามหลักของค่ายตัวเองก็ยังเสียวสันหลัง คาดว่าถ้าหากผู้อ่านไม่ได้ไป Full Frame D7000 ก็ต้องเป็นกล้องคู่ใจคนใช้และรัก nikon ได้ไม่ยากนัก

ส่วนอีก 3 แพ็กเกจนอกจาก Free Size ก็คือ S, M และ L ซึ่งต้องเป็นผู้ที่ซื้อเครื่อง iPhone 4 จาก TrueMove เท่านั้น โดยจุดเด่นที่แตกต่างจาก Free Size ก็คือ มีโบนัสค่าโทร และมีฟรีค่าบริการรายเดือนนั่นเอง แพ็กเกจ S ซึ่งเป็นแพ็กเกจเล็กสุดของ TrueMove นั้นจะเริ่มต้นที่เดือนละ 399 บาท หากดูจากองค์ประกอบโดยรวมแล้วน่าจะต้องอึดอัดกับการใช้งานไม่น้อย โดยเฉพาะผู้ที่ต้องการเชื่อมต่ออินเทอร์เน็ต หรือต้องออนไลน์อยู่ตลอดเวลา และคงปฏิเสธไม่ได้ว่าการใช้งานในลักษณะนี้เป็นเรื่องปกติสำหรับผู้ใช้มือถือยุคใหม่ไปแล้ว โดย แพ็กเกจ S ให้เชื่อมต่อ EDGE/GPRS กับ 3G ได้ฟรีเพียงแค่เดือนละ 200 MB เท่านั้น ซึ่งถือว่าน้อยมาก มีแนวโน้มว่าผู้ใช้ส่วนใหญ่จะใช้งานเกินค่อนข้างแน่นอน แม้ว่าจะมีฟรี WiFi ให้อีก 10 ชั่วโมงก็ตาม แต่ก็ใช่ว่าทุกๆ ที่จะมี WiFi ให้ใช้งาน โดยเฉพาะในจังหวัดที่ไม่ใช่จังหวัดใหญ่ๆ หากเป็นไปได้ก็แนะนำให้เพิ่มงบอีกนิดเป็น แพ็กเกจ M น่าจะใช้งานได้โอเคกว่า เพราะอย่างน้อยก็จะได้ใช้งาน EDGE/GPRS ได้ไม่จำกัด ถึงจะช้าหน่อย แต่ก็ใช้งานได้ทุกที่ทุกเวลาจริงๆ และสำหรับ แพ็กเกจ L แม้จะมีค่าบริการรายเดือนที่สูงที่สุดคืออยู่ที่ 799 บาท แต่ก็ขาดบางอย่างที่สำคัญไป นั่นคือการใช้ 3G ได้ไม่จำกัด ก็น่าแปลกที่ แพ็กเกจ Free Size ซึ่งมีค่าบริการเพียงแค่ 599 บาท แต่กลับมีคุณสมบัติในจุดนี้ ดังนั้นคาดว่าหลายๆ คนที่กำลังตัดสินใจเลือก แพ็กเกจ L อยู่ก็คงจะเปลี่ยนใจมากใช้ แพ็กเกจ Free Size ไม่น้อยเลยทีเดียว

ต่อไปเราก็จะมาลองดู แพ็กเกจ ของค่ายพี่ใหญ่อย่าง AIS กันบ้าง มาดูกันว่าครั้งแรกกับการขาย iPhone ของ AIS นั้นจะออกตัวได้แรงขนาดไหน เรียกว่าสำหรับการมาของ iPhone 4 ครั้ง AIS นั้นเป็นเครือข่ายที่ถูกจับตามองมากที่สุดก็ว่าได้ โดยสุดท้ายทาง AIS ก็ได้นำเสนอ แพ็กเกจ มาให้ทั้งหมด 3 รูปแบบ 3 ระดับด้วยกัน ได้แก่ แพ็กเกจ Mini, Medium และ Max ซึ่งดูๆ ไปแล้ว ไฮไลท์น่าจะไปอยู่ที่ แพ็กเกจ Mini ซึ่งมีค่ารายเดือนเริ่มต้นที่ถูกในสุดแล้วในบรรดาแพ็กเกจทั้งหมดของทุกค่าย ด้วยค่าบริการเดือนละ 275 บาทเท่านั้น และหากถามว่าคุ้มหรือไม่กับการโทรฟรีทุกเครือข่ายเดือนละ 150 นาที ฟรี SMS เดือนละ 100 ข้อความ ฟรี MMS เดือนละ 20 ข้อความ และฟรี EDGE/GPRS เดือนละ 150 MB เมื่อเทียบกับค่าบริการก็ถือว่าคุ้มใช้ได้ แต่ก็คงไม่เหมาะสำหรับผู้ที่ต้องใช้งานอินเทอร์เน็ตอยู่เป็นประจำ เนื่องจาก EDGE/GPRS แค่เดือนละ 150 MB คงไม่พอใช้ ทางเลือกก็อาจจะเพิ่มงบไปเป็น แพ็กเกจ Medium ที่น่าจะใช้งานเชื่อมต่ออินเทอร์เน็ต การโทรศัพท์ หรือส่งข้อความได้คล่องตัวมากขึ้น หรือหากงบเยอะ ก็จัดหนักไปที่ แพ็กเกจ Max ซึ่งสามารถใช้งาน EDGE/GPRS ได้อย่างไม่จำกัด รวมถึงการโทรศัพท์ และส่งข้อความที่ค่อนข้างเหลือเฟือ

สุดท้ายเรามาลองดู แพ็กเกจ สำหรับ iPhone 4 ของค่ายกังหันสีฟ้า อย่าง DTAC กันบ้าง ซึ่ง DTAC นี้ก็มีประสบการณ์ในการทำตลาด iPhone 3GS มาแล้วเช่นเดียวกันกับค่าย TrueMove ดังนั้นบรรดาผู้ที่เล็งเครื่อง iPhone 4 และแพ็กเกจจาก DTAC เอาไว้ ก็คงจะตั้งความหวังไว้ว่า DTAC คงจะนำประสบการณ์มากมายในอดีต มาศึกษา และคิดค้นโปรโมชั่นเด็ดๆ ให้ถูกใจลูกค้ามากกว่าที่เคยเป็นมา ซึ่งท้ายที่สุดแล้วก็ได้เปิดตัวออกมาทั้งหมด 3 แพ็กเกจด้วยกัน ได้แก่ S, M และ L ซึ่งหากถามว่าเมื่อเทียบกับค่ายอื่นแล้วมีจุดเด่นที่เหนือกว่าอย่างไร จากที่ดูๆ ก็มีจุดขายอยู่บ้างเหมือนกัน เช่นหากดูที่ แพ็กเกจ ที่เล็กสุดของ DTAC ซึ่งก็คือ แพ็กเกจ S ก็จะเห็นว่า จะได้โทรฟรีทุกเครือข่าย ฟรี SMS และ ฟรี MMS ที่มากกว่าแพ็คเกจเล็กของค่ายอื่นๆ อยู่พอสมควร แม้ว่าค่ารายเดือนจะสูงกว่าก็ตาม แต่ถัวเฉลี่ยแล้ว ก็ถือว่ายังได้เปรียบอยู่ จะเสียเปรียบก็ตรงที่ได้ใช้ EDGE/GPRS แค่ 100 MB ต่อเดือนเท่านั้น ซึ่งถือว่าน้อยที่สุด หากดูที่ แพ็กเกจ ราคาประหยัดของทั้ง 3 ค่าย ดูไปแล้ว หากจะใช้ iPhone 4 ให้เต็มที่กันจริงๆ แพ็กเกจ S ก็ไม่น่าจะเหมาะซักเท่าไหร่ เพราะยังมีจุดอ่อนในเรื่องของการเชื่อมต่อ โดยส่วนตัวแล้ว มองว่า แพ็กเกจ ที่คุ้มที่สุดของ DTAC เองน่าจะเป็น แพ็กเกจ M เนื่องจากค่ารายเดือนเพียงแค่ 580 บาท ก็ได้ใช้งาน EDGE/GPRS แบบไม่จำกัดแล้ว แถมยังได้โทรฟรีทุกเครือข่าย และส่งข้อความได้ค่อนข้างเยอะอีกด้วย เรียกว่าได้เปรียบ แพ็กเกจ Medium ของ AIS แต่ก็ต้องยอมรับว่า หากนำไปเทียบกับ แพ็กเกจ M ของ TrueMove แล้ว ก็เป็นรองอยู่พอสมควร เพราะเจ้านั้นเขามีฟรี 3G เดือนละ 500 MB กับฟรี WiFi เดือนละ 20 ชั่วโมงพ่วงตามมาด้วยนั่นเอง

โดยสรุปแล้ว หากเปรียบเทียบ แพ็กเกจ กันทั้ง 3 เครือข่าย ทั้ง TrueMove, AIS และ DTAC ก็คงต้องบอกว่าทุกค่ายต่างมีข้อได้เปรียบเสียเปรียบที่แตกต่างกันออกไป แล้วแต่ว่าสไตล์การใช้งานของแต่ละคนนั้นจะไปแมชเข้ากับ แพ็กเกจ ไหนได้ดีที่สุด แต่สำหรับ iPhone 4 นั้น หากเราตั้งอยู่บนสมมติฐานที่ว่า ผู้ใช้ iPhone 4 ส่วนใหญ่มักจะเป็นผู้ใช้ยุคใหม่ ที่ชื่นชอบการเล่นอินเทอร์เน็ต ใช้ชีวิตแบบออนไลน์อยู่ตลอดเวลา ด้วยความสามารถของตัว iPhone 4 เองที่สามารถใช้งานในลักษณะนี้ได้อย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ โดยภาพรวมแล้วก็ต้องบอกว่า แพ็กเกจ ของ TrueMove ก็น่าที่จะตอบสนองต่อการใช้งานได้ดีที่สุด เนื่องจากมีครบวงจรทั้ง EDGE/GPRS, 3G และ WiFi นั่นเอง แต่ก็ใช่ว่าอีก 2 ค่ายจะยอมเสียเมื่อไหร่ อย่าง AIS ก็แน่นอนว่ายังเป็นเครือข่ายที่มีคุณภาพสัญญาณที่ดีที่สุด จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัว ซึ่งก็ถือว่าเป็นเรื่องพื้นฐานที่สำคัญที่สุดสำหรับการใช้งานโทรศัพท์มือถือก็ว่าได้ และ แพ็กเกจ ตัวเล็กสุด หรือ แพ็กเกจ Mini นั้น เป็น แพ็กเกจ ที่มีค่าบริการรายเดือนเริ่มต้นถูกที่สุดในบรรดา แพ็กเกจ ทั้งหมดอีกด้วย ส่วนค่าย DTAC นั้นก็มีความน่าสนใจตรงที่การโทรฟรี การส่งข้อความ SMS และการส่งข้อความ MMS รวมถึง EDGE/GPRS แบบไม่จำกัดที่เริ่มต้นเพียงแค่เดือนละ 580 บาท และ แพ็กเกจ ตัวใหญ่สุด ก็อยู่ที่ 699 บาทต่อเดือนเท่านั้น เรียกว่ามาแบบกลางๆ ประกอบกับคุณภาพของการบริการ และคุณภาพเครือข่ายที่เชื่อถือได้

สุดท้าย จะเลือกค่ายไหน ใช่ว่าจะดูที่ แพ็กเกจ อย่างเดียว

กว่าจะได้ซื้อ iPhone 4 ทั้งที ดูเหมือนจะลำบากลำบนเสียเหลือเกิน ตั้งแต่การติดตามข่าวสาร ตามไล่ลงทะเบียนรับข่าวสาร (เป็นที่รู้กันว่าเป็นการจองเครื่อง) สืบราคา ไปจนถึงสืบโปรโมชั่น อยู่ตลอดเวลาจนกระทั่งถึงวันที่ต้องไปรับเครื่อง iPhone 4 มาดูแล แต่หลังจากที่ได้มีโอกาสไปเข้าร่วมงานเปิดตัวของทั้งค่าย TrueMove, AIS และ DTAC ก็พบว่า แต่ละค่ายก็ไม่ได้โปรโมทในเรื่องของราคาตัวเครื่อง การผ่อนชำระ หรือ แพ็กเกจ ของตัวเองแต่เพียงอย่างเดียวเท่านั้น เรียกว่ายังมีจุดขายของแต่ละค่ายมานำเสนอเพิ่มเติมกันอีกมากมายเพื่อการตัดสินใจของผู้ที่ต้องการซื้อ iPhone 4 นั่นเอง ซึ่งเราก็ได้สรุปจุดขายที่แต่ละค่ายภูมิใจนำเสนอมาให้คร่าวๆ ดังต่อไปนี้

ในตอนนี้สิทธิในการซื้อเครื่อง iPhone 4 ของทุกค่ายก็คงจะถูกจับจองกันไปหมดเรียบร้อยแล้ว เรียกได้ว่าจำนวนของผู้ซื้อนั้นมีมากกว่าโควต้าที่มีของแต่ละค่าย ใครที่ได้สิทธิซื้อในรอบนี้ก็ถือว่าโชคดีที่ได้เป็นคนกลุ่มแรกในประเทศไทยที่ได้ iPhone 4 เครื่องศูนย์ไปครอบครอง และสนุกกับการใช้งานได้อย่างที่ใจต้องการ และ แพ็กเกจ ที่ออกมาของแต่ละค่ายนั้นก็มีความน่าสนใจ และเอื้อประโยชน์ต่อการใช้งาน iPhone 4 ได้ดีแตกต่างกันไป แต่ที่น่าเสียดายก็คือ ผู้ซื้อ iPhone 4 รอบแรกนี้ไม่ได้มีโอกาสที่จะพิจารณาข้อมูลต่างๆ ก่อนการตัดสินใจว่าจะเลือกซื้อ iPhone 4 จากค่ายใด เนื่องจากข้อมูลต่างๆ ถูกปิดเงียบมาโดยตลอด กว่าจะรู้ข้อมูลอย่างชัดเจนก็แทบจะต้องเตรียมตัวออกจากบ้านไปยืนต่อแถวรอรับเครื่องแล้ว แต่ก็ต้องตัดสินใจเลือกค่ายลงทะเบียนล่วงหน้าเพื่อไม่ให้พลาดสิทธิในการซื้อ iPhone 4 นั่นเอง อย่างไรก็ตามสำหรับผู้ที่พลาดสิทธิในรอบนี้ ก็คงไม่ต้องเสียดายแต่อย่างใด เพราะคงจะมีเครื่อง iPhone 4 ล็อตใหม่เข้ามาในเร็วๆ นี้อย่างแน่นอน อีกทั้งยังมีเวลาพิจารณาข้อมูลต่างๆ ได้มากขึ้นก่อนจะตัดสินใจซื้ออีกต่างหาก สุดท้ายนี้ก็ต้องขอขอบคุณผู้อ่านทุกท่านที่ติดตามชม ผิดพลาดประการใดคงต้องขออภัยไว้ล่วงหน้า พบกันได้ใหม่ในโอกาสต่อไป สวัสดีครับ

อยู่ดีๆ ก็ส้มหล่น ได้ทัวร์ฟรี บินฟรี กินฟรีอยู่ฟรี ไปสิงคโปร์ แจ็คพ็อทแตกแบบทูอินวัน ได้กล้องในฝัน SONY NEX5 กล้องอัลฟ่าขนาดเท่าคอมแพ็ค เปลี่ยนเลนส์ได้คุณภาพไฟล์เท่า DSLR เป็นอีกครั้งในหลายๆครั้งที่รู้สึกตื่นเต้นที่จะได้ทดสอบกล้อง เพราะเป็นกล้องเล็กเปลี่ยนเลนส์ได้ตัวแรกจากโซนี่ หลังจากคู่แข่งอย่างโอลิมปัส ซัมซุง พานาโซนิค ออกกล้องแบบไมโครโฟเติทมาก่อนหน้านี้ ถึงจะออกช้ากว่ายี่ห้ออื่น แต่จากการทดสอบต้องบอกคำเดียวว่า ช้าแต่ชัวร์ค่ะ

เพราะว่ากล้อง Nex ยังใหม่มาก และยังไม่วางตลาด การถือกล้องไปสิงคโปร์ครั้งนี้ ถึงแม้จะไปกับคนที่คลุกคลีในวงการกล้อง มีเพียงคนเดียวที่ดูออกว่าเป็น Nex จากโซนี่ แถมยังมีคนทักผิดเป็นกล้อง EP1 จากโอลิมปัส คงเพราะการออกแบบที่คล้ายๆกัน ซึ่งคอนเซ็ปของกล้องลักษณะนี้คือ ออกแบบให้ขนาดเล็ก เปลี่ยนเลนส์ได้ และคุณภาพเท่า DSLR เมื่อ เทียบขนาดให้เห็นภาพชัดเจนเมื่อประกอบเลนส์คิท 18-55 แล้ว ขนาดโดยรวมจะเล็กกว่ากล้อง DSLR รุ่นเล็ก ครึ่งหนึ่ง

ได้กล้อง NEX ก่อนเดินทางไปสิงคโปร์ ประมาณ 3 วัน ลูบๆคลำๆ ตัวบอดี้ รู้สึกแข็งแรงแน่นหนา พอๆกับสัมผัสกล้อง DSLR รุ่นใหญ่ ตัวบอดี้ผลิตจากแม็กนีเซี่ยมอัลลอยด์ การออกแบบยังเน้นให้ใช้งานง่าย มีกริ๊ปจับพร้อมหุ้มวัสดุเพิ่มแรงเสียดทานด้านขวา ด้านบนมีวงแหวนเปิดปิดกล้อง และชัตเตอร์จัดวางในตำแหน่งที่พอดี นอกจากนี้มุมบนขวายังมีปุ่มเพลย์ดูรูป และปุ่ม Movie สั่งการถ่ายภาพเหคลื่อนไหวพลิกกลับมาด้านหลังจะพบกับจอ LCD ขนาดใหญ่มาก (Extra Fine LCD) ความละเอียดสูง 921,600 พิกเซล ด้านขวาของจอ LCD ,วงแหวนควบคุมการทำงานของกล้อง และเนื่องจากถูกจำกัดด้วยขนาด จึงต้องใช้งานปุ่มร่วมกับ LCD

มาต่อที่ตัวเลนส์กันบ้าง Nex เป็นกล้องตัวเล็กที่เปลี่ยนเลนส์ได้ (E - mount) แม้ตอนนี้จะมีเลนส์ให้เลือกเพียง 3 รุ่น คือ sel18-55 , sel16 mm. f2.8 และ sel18-200 แต่ถ้าอยากใช้กับเลนส์ของโซนี่ และมินอลต้า สามารถใช้ได้โดยผ่าน Adapter แต่จะไม่สามารถออโต้โฟกัสได้

การไปเที่ยวครั้งนี้มีโอกาสได้ใช้ sel 18 -55 ทั้งทริป วัสดุที่ใช้ และความแข็งแรง ดีกว่าเลนส์ คิทกล้อง DSLR แต่น้ำหนักมากกว่า และกลับมาลองเล่น 16 mm.F2.8 ที่ผลิตจากวัสดุชนิดเดียวกัน ส่วนเรื่องคุณภาพต้องตัดสินจากภาพถ่ายในทริปนี้กันเองค่ะ

คุณสมบัติเด่น

ไปสิงคโปร์ 3 วันสองคืน เจอกับสภาพอากาศแปรปรวน เช้าแดดออก บ่ายฝนตก เย็นอากาศหนาว คนทนไม่ไหวป่วยกันไปตามๆกันแต่กล้องยังทนได้ ไม่งอแง ออกเดินทางจากกรุงเทพถึงสิงคโปร์เวลาบ่าย ขาดทุนเวลาไป 1 ชั่วโมงเพราะเวลาที่นี่เร็ววกว่าเมืองไทยด้วยเหตุผลทางธุรกิจ สถานที่เที่ยวที่แรกที่ทัวร์พาไปคือ สิงคโปร์ ฟรายเออร์ ชิงช้าสวรรค์ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในเอเชีย ในวันฝนพรำ

ก่อนขึ้นไปไกด์เล่าให้ฟังว่า กระเช้านี้เคยปิดให้บริการช่วงหนึ่ง เพราะระบบขัดข้อง คนสุดท้ายที่โรยตัวลงมาได้ ค้างอยู่บนนั้น 7 ชั่วโมง ไม่มีน้ำไม่มีอาหารไม่มีแพมเพิส (จะเล่าให้กลัวทำไมเนี่ย) แต่เดี๋ยวนี้อนุญาติให้นำน้ำขึ้นไปได้ และมีกล่องยังชีพอยู่ใต้เก้าอี้ภายในกระเช้า

ก่อนจะขึ้น มีบูธให้ถ่ายรูปก่อน ทุกคนต้องผ่านด่านนี้ เค้าจะนำรูปของเราไปใส่ในฉากหลังที่มีอยู่แล้ว ถ้าเราถูกใจก็ซื้อกลับบ้านหลังจากลงมาแล้ว ราคาก็ไม่แพงมากค่ะ รูปละ 4 ร้อยกว่าบาทเอง (แต่สำหรับคนไทยอย่างเราไม่ถูกเลยค่ะ)

ก้าวขาขึ้นกระเช้า ต้องอาศัยจังหวะเพราะกระเช้าจะไม่หยุดรอเรา เราจะค่อยๆหมุนขึ้นอย่างช้าๆ ไม่ทำให้เวียนหัว แต่ยิ่งสูงก็ยิ่ง เสียว และวิวสวย ไปพร้อมๆกัน มองลงไปด่านล่างเหมือนเรากำลังบินอยู่บนฟ้า พี่ไกด์บอกว่าถ้าในวันฟ้าใส จะมองเห็นได้ถึงอินโดนีเชีย แต่ด้วยความโชคดีของเรา คือฝนตกไม่หนัก ยังสามารถมองเห็นวิวและถ่ายภาพได้ พร้อมทั้งมีเม็ดฝนเป็นฉากหน้า ก้าวขึ้นไปที่กระเช้า รู้สึกกลัวมากกว่าตื่นเต้น เพราะ เป็นกระเช้ากระจกมองเห็นได้รอบทิศทาง

เซ็นเซอร์แบบ APS HD CMOS (APS-C) ขนาด 14.2 ล้านพิกเซล

ช่วงเลนส์ 49 ช่องรับแสง 5 ชัตเตอร์สปีท 1/40 วินาที ความไวแสง(iso)1600

ที่ที่ไม่ควรพลาดสำหรับชาวพุทธที่ชอบถ่ายภาพ คือวัดจีนที่สวยที่สุดในสิงคโปร์ Buddha Tooth Relic เดินเข้าไปภายในวัด พบกับโคมเทียนที่รายล้อมไปด้วยดอกมะลิ คิดว่าน่าจะเป็นของบูชาเหมือนบ้านเรา สภาพภายในแสงค่อยข้างน้อย แต่ก็ดูอลังการมาก ได้ยินเพื่อนร่วมกรุ๊ปทัวร์บ่นว่าไม่ค่อยได้รูปเพราะแสงไม่เพียงพอ แต่สำหรับกล้อง Nex5 ไม่ใช่ปัญหาถึงแม้ความไวแสงสูงถึง 1600 ภาพที่ได้ก็ยังเนียน ไม่เสียรายละเอียด

Shot รุ่นหลังๆ ที่นอกจากจะจัดการสัญญาณรบกวนที่ความไวแสงสูงๆได้ดีแล้ว ยังจัดการถ่ายซ้อนหลายๆ ช็อทแล้วนำมาประมวลผลรวมกัน ในที่แสงน้อยที่กล้องปรกติถ่ายไม่ได้ถ้าไม่ใช้ขาตั้งกล้อง ก็เลยทำให้ลืมปัญหา เข้าที่แสงน้อยแล้วภาพเบลอ รับประกันได้ว่า ใครเห็นไฟล์จริงก็ต้องทึ่งค่ะ

เดินขึ้นบันไดเลยขึ้นไปชั้นดาดฟ้า ภายในมีสวนกลางแจ้ง และที่ให้หมุนพอครบรอบระฆังก็จะตี หมุนไปสามรอบเริ่มเวียนหัว ดูนาฬิกาแล้วก็ยังไม่ถึงเวลานัด เลยเดินชมสวนบนตึกต่ออีกนิด ฝนก็เทลงมา

เมื่อฝนตก เลยต้องติดฝนอยู่ในร่มสักพัก ระหว่างรอก็ซูมถ่ายดอกไม้ในสายฝน พอกดดูรูปก็ต้องตกใจ นึกว่าเลนส์มาโคร ถ้าจะให้เทียบมาตรฐานเลนส์คิท 18-55 ที่เคยผ่านมือมาแทบทุกยี่ห้อ ต้องบอกให้ลืมความรู้สึกคิทของกล้อง DSLR ปรกติไปได้เลย เพราะมีสิ่งที่เหมือนกันแค่ช่วงของเลนส์ 18-55 แต่ภาพเหมือนเลนส์คิทผสมกับเลนส์มาโครหรือเลนส์ฟิก ทิ้งฉากหลังได้เบลอ จนบางครั้งคิดในใจ จะเบลอกระจายไปไหนเนี่ย ยิ่งหากโฟกัสระยะใกล้ ระยะชัดจะต่ำมาก เป็นเพราะเซ็นเซอร์ที่ใหญ่ หรือมีซ๊อฟแวย์ช่วยด้วย(อันนี้ไม่แน่ใจ) ส่งผลให้ละลายฉากหลังเวลาซูม สัดส่วนภาพเหมือนระยะที่ตาเห็น ซึ่งเป็นข้อแตกต่างระหว่างDSLR กับกล้องคอมแพ็คที่เมื่อซูมสัดส่วนของภาพจะเหมือนกับการคร็อปมา แถมยังสามารถหมุนวงแหวนควบคุมระยะชัดสั่งการได้แค่นิ้วเดียว ในโหมด I ออโต้ สำหรับผู้ที่ไม่มีความเข้าใจเรื่องการถ่ายภาพ หรือขี้เกียจปรับ กล้อง

ก่อนจะกลับจากวัดจีน นึกขึ้นได้ว่ากล้องเราถ่ายพานอราม่าได้ด้วย เลยเข้าไปเก็บอีกสองสามรูป โหมดถ่ายพานอราม่าของกล้อง NEX5 ยังไม่เสถียรเท่าที่ควร มีปัญหาเหมือนกล้อง Cyber-Shot รุ่นแรกๆ ต้องแพนกล้องช้าๆ และห้ามถ่ายวัตถุที่มีการเคลื่อนไหว ไม่เช่นนั้นสัดส่วนจะเพี้ยนหรือขาดตอน ส่วนเรื่องคุณภาพไฟล์สอบผ่านแน่นอน แต่มีข้อเตือนสำหรับใครที่จะถ่ายโหมดนี้ในที่เงียบๆ ต้องระวังสายตาคนอื่นสักนิดค่ะ เพราะพอกดชัตเตอร์ปุ๊ป จะรัวเหมือนยิงปืนกล ถือว่าเตือนกันแล้วนะคะ

โหมดถ่ายภาพง่ายอย่างกล้องคอมแพ็ค

ที่ต่อไปที่จะพาไปเที่ยว คือยูนิเวอร์แซล สวนสนุกเปิดใหม่ ที่ชั้นได้ดินเป็นคาสิโน ลงจากรถปรับกล้องไปที่โหมด I ออโต้ อ่านถึงตรงนี้อาจมีคนคิดในใจ แหมซื้อกล้องมาแพงปรับแต่โหมดออโต้ ต้องทำความเข้าใจก่อนค่ะว่าโหมดนี้เหมาะกับทุกคน ไม่ว่าคุณจะมีความรู้เรื่องการถ่ายภาพน้อย ไปจนถึงมาก เพราะบางครั้งการไปเที่ยว เราก็ต้องการสนุกกับสิ่งที่เราไปพบเจอที่สุด และก็อยากได้ภาพที่สวยที่สุดกลับบ้านด้วย ถ้าจะให้มานั่งคำนวณ ต้องใช้รูรับแสงเท่าไร ชัตเตอร์สปีทเท่าไร ความไวแสงเท่าไร เดี๋ยวจะหมดสนุกกันพอดีค่ะ

เป็นความโชคดีที่เทคโนโลยี่สมัยนี้พัฒนาให้กล้องฉลาดขึ้น เหมือนปรับไปที่โหมดนี้กล้องจะคำนวนการตั้งค่ากล้องให้เหมาะสมที่สุด ไม่ว่าจะเล็งกล้องย้อนแสง กล้องก็รู้ มาโคร กล้องก็เข้าใจ แสงน้อยก็ปรับตัวตามอีก ถ้าได้เป็นแฟนคงเพอเฟ็ค เอาเป็นว่าไว้ใจได้ 98 เปอร์เซ็นได้รูปสวยแน่นอนค่ะ ส่วนอีก 2 เปอร์เซ็น ก็ต้องยอมรับค่ะว่า มันก็มีข้อผิดพลาดกันบ้าง เป็นธรรมชาติของโลกมนุษย์ค่ะ

ปรับกล้องในโหมดนี้ตลอดทั้งวันที่อยู่ใน ยูนิเวอร์แซล เพราะลำพังตระเวนต่อแถวเล่นเครื่องเล่นก็เหนื่อย และมันส์มากพอแล้วค่ะ (ก็มาเที่ยวนี่คะ ไม่ได้มาทำงาน) สำหรับใครที่อยากมาถ่ายรูป ที่นี่มีมุมให้ถ่ายพรีเวดดิ้งเยอะมาก แต่สำหรับใครที่อยากมาเล่นเครื่องเล่น มาดูโชว์ แนะนำว่าให้นำกล้องคอมแพ็คมาก็พอค่ะ

สนุกกันเต็มที่ ทั้งตากฝน ตากแดดไม่มีกลัว เคลื่องเล่นที่นี่สนุกมากค่ะ แต่ไม่เหมาะกับคนเป็นโคหัวใจ และความดัน มีคุณป้าท่านนึง โดนหลอกไปเล่นมัมมี่(เครื่องเล่นชนิดหนึ่งเหมือนบ้านผีสิง + รถไฟเหาะ) พอลงจากรถได้ เข้าห้องพยาบาลตื่นมาอีกทีก็เย็นแล้วค่ะ

SCN Mode

โหมดถ่ายกลางคืนถือด้วยมือ
หลังจากสนุกสนานกันทั้งวันกับเครื่องเล่น นานาชนิดแล้ว ก็ไปต่อกันที่แสดงยามค่ำคืนที่อยากดูที่สุดในทริปนี้การแสดงน้ำพุเต้นระบำ Song of The sea พวกเรามัวแต่เล่นอยู่ที่สวนสนุกยูนิเวิลแซวนานไปหน่อย กว่าจะขึ้นรถไฟฟ้ามาถึง คนก็เข้าไปนั่งกันเยอะแล้ว ก่อนเปิดการแสดงจะเห็นฉากเพียงบ้านไม้สร้างอยู่หันหน้าเข้าฝั่ง หันหลังออกทะเล มืดมากๆ กำลังคิดอยู่ว่าจะถ่ายภาพอย่างไรดี เพราะเป็นการแสดงเลเซอร์ที่มีการเคลื่อนไหวรวดเร็ว หากใช้โหมด I ออโต้ กล้องจะคำนวณให้เหมาะกับการถ่ายภาพกลางคืน โดยเพิ่มความไวแสงให้สูง ด้วยสภาพแสงแบบนี้ คงไม่สามารถหยุดแสงเลเซอร์ที่ฉายรูปได้

ปรับไปที่โหมด I ออโต้ กล้องคำนวณปรับให้เหมาะสมกับการถ่ายภาพกลางคืน แต่ไม่สามารถหยุดแสงเลเซอร์ที่เร็วได้ ที่ ISO6400

ตัดสินใจเลือกโหมด SCN แล้วเลือกไปที่ถ่ายกลางคืนแบบไม่ใช้ขาตั้งกล้อง พอกดถ่ายกล้องจะรัวชัตเตอร์เหมือนปืนกล แล้วนำมาประมวลผลให้ภาพคมชัด ในสถานการณ์ยากๆแบบนี้ แถมยังได้หน้าของคนและตัวการ์ตูนชัดอีกด้วยค่ะ โหมดนี้ยังสามารถใช้กับสภาพแสงที่น้อยมากๆ เน้นว่ามากจริงๆ เพราะถ้าสภาพแสงไฟกลาคืนธรรมดา แนะนำให้ใช้โหมด I ออโต้ หรือปรับ ความไวแสงให้สูงขึ้นมากกว่าเพราะระบบจัดการน้อยส์ดีมาก ให้ไฟล์ที่ดีกว่าค่ะ

นอกจากโหมดถ่ายภาพกลางคืนถือด้วยมือแล้ว ยังมีโหมดถ่ายภาพบุคคล วิว มาโคร กีฬา ตะวันตกดิน ภาพบุคคลกลางคืน วิวกลางคืน ให้เลือกใช้ตามความเหมาะสม เพื่อให้ใช้งานง่ายที่สุด และได้รูปสวยที่สุดอีกด้วยค่ะ

โหมดถ่ายภาพ ควบคุมได้เหมือนกล้อง DSLR

ก่อนจะกลับพี่ไกด์บอกว่า มาคราวหน้าต้องซื้อกล้องใหญ่ๆ แบบคนอื่นเค้าได้แล้ว เราก็กระหยิ่มยิ้มย่องในใจ พี่นี่ไม่รู้ซะแล้วว่าเจ้านี่มันเล็กพริกขี้หนู ไม่ได้ต่างจากกล้องใหญ่ๆ ที่แบกหนักๆ ของคนอื่นเลย ไม่ว่าจะเซ็นเซอร์ การเปลี่ยนเลนส์ได้ โหมดถ่ายภาพและการควบคุมกล้องส่วนใหญ่อย่างโหมด M A S การตั้งค่าต่างๆก็สามารถทำได้ สามารถปรับตั้งค่าได้ละเอียดเหมือนกล้อง DSLR ไม่ใช่โหมด M ที่ปรับได้ไม่กี่ค่าเหมือนกล้องขนาดเดียวกัน จะมีที่ไม่เหมือนคือการลดขนาดของกล้องทำให้ต้องตัดปุ่มบางอย่าง แต่หากใช้จนชินมือก็สามารถควบคุมได้สะดวก แต่ที่ดีกว่าจนต้องกล่าวถึงคือการถ่ายภาพกลางคืนและที่แสงน้อย DSLR ต้องอาย ที่สำคัญ น้ำหนักน้อยกว่ามากๆๆๆ ค่ะ

แฟลช
เพราะ NEX 5ถ่ายภาพในที่แสงน้อยได้ดีเหลือเกิน แฟลชจึแทบไม่มีความจำเป็น ยกเว้นต้องการสร้างสรรค์ภาพตามจินตนาการเท่านั้น แต่จะไม่กล่าวถึงก็ไม่ได้ เพราะในชุดมีแฟลชติดมาให้ทดสอบด้วย โดยเสียบแฟลชลงที่ช่องต่อด้านบน(ช่องเดียวกับที่ต่องช่องมองภาพ) การคำนวณแสงแม่นไม่ผิดหวังกับระบบแฟลชของโซนี่ จะมีเรื่องของ WB ที่คำนวณไม่แม่นบ้าง แต่เรื่องการคำนวนแสงแฟลชถือว่าสอบผ่านเลยทีเดียว

คุณภาพของไฟล์ภาพนิ่ง

เพื่อนร่วมกรุ๊ปทัวร์ขอเอากล้องไปดูภาพถ่าย พร้อมบอกว่า โอ้โหภาพเหมือนกล้องใหญ่ๆ เลย ทั้งมิติของภาพ ความสมจริง ความเนียนของไฟล์ สกินโทนเมื่อถ่ายคนสวย และระบบจัดการสัญญาณรบกวนเมื่อแสงน้อย ดีมาก เทียบขนาดของกล้อง และคุณภาพไฟล์ภาพ ต้องยกนิ้วให้กล้อง NEX 5 เลยค่ะ แต่ถ้าใครจะบอกว่าเวอร์เชียร์จนออกนอกหน้า ก็สามารถตัดสินจากไฟล์ภาพทั้งหมดในรีวิวนี้ได้ เพราะเป็นไฟล์ภาพต้นฉบับ ผ่านกระบวนการย่อและใส่กรอบเท่านั้น ส่วนเรื่องการเก็บภาพในสภาพแสงต่างๆ มีค่อนข้างครอบ ทั้งวันฟ้าครึ้ม ฟ้าใส หลอดไฟนีออน แสงน้อย ไม่มีแสง มีครบในรีวิวนี้ค่ะ

ตั้งแต่ติดกล้องคอมแพ็คไปเที่ยวเป็นประจำ แม้จะพก DSLR ไปด้วยก็ตาม เหตุผลก็เพราะความหลงใหลในการเก็บภาพความทรงจำไม่ได้จำกัดเพียงแค่ภาพนิ่ง อีกแล้ว Nex สามารถบันทึกวีดีโอแบบ เอ้าส์โฟกัส(หน้าชัดหลังเบลอ) และสามารถเลือกจุดโฟกัสได้เอง ไฟล์ดูเป็นมืออาชีพยิ่งขึ้น แต่ความเนียนของไฟล์ และความสะดวกในการใช้งาน คงไม่เท่ากล้องวีดีโอรุ่นใหญ่ๆ เน้นว่ารุ่นใหญ่ๆ (4 หมื่นขึ้นไป) แต่หากเทียบกับกล้อง DSLR ที่สามารถถ่ายวีดีโอได้ คุณภาพไฟล์ไม่หนีกัน ที่ระบบกันสั่นขณะถ่ายวีดีโอในตัวกล้องดีมาก ภาพตัวอย่างทั้งหมดไม่ได้ใช้ขาตั้งเลยแม้แต่คลิปเดียว ภาพไม่สั่นไหวดูไม่เวียนหัว แม้จะซูมมากมากก็ตาม ที่สำคัญในที่แสงน้อยอย่างน้ำพุเต้นระบำสามารถเก็บสีสันได้เหมือนที่ตาเห็น และสามารถปรับออโต้โฟกัสแบบต่อเนื่อง และปรับค่าเปิดรับแสงได้ในขณะถ่ายวีดีโอ นอกจากนี้ยังบันทึกภาพเคลื่อนไหวแบบ AVCHD โดยความแตกต่างของ Nex 5 และ Nex 3 คือขนาดของไฟล์วีดีโอ ที่ Nex5 จะถ่ายได้ขนาดใหญ่สุด Full HD (1080p) แต่ Nex3 ถ่ายได้ขนาด 720

การถ่าถ่ายวีดีโอของกล้อง NEX 5 ควบคุมโดยกดที่ปุ่ม MOVIE วีดีโอจะเริ่มถ่ายทันที และหยุดถ่ายเมื่อกดปุ่มอีกครั้ง การทำงานเมื่อสลับระหว่างภาพเคลื่อนไหวและภาพนิ่งค่อนข้างช้า ทำให้พลาดช็อทสำคัญไปหลายช็อทเหมือนกันค่ะ

LCD ปรับแสงอัตโนมัติ สามารถปรับมุมได้

ไปเที่ยวสิงคโปร์ในครั้งนี้ เจอทั้งอากาศร้านแดดเปรี้ยง ฝนตก และอยู่ท่ามกลางแสงสีของไฟในสวนสนุก ถ้าเป็นกล้องตัวอื่นที่ไม่มีระบบปรับแสงให้เหมาะกับสภาพแวดดล้อมโดย อัตโนมัติ คงไม่สามารถมองจอภาพได้ชัดเจนทุกสภาพแสง จอ LCD ที่ปรับพับได้หลายองศามีประโยชน์สำหรับการถ่ายภาพมุมแปลกๆ อย่างมุมเงยมุมกด แต่ก็มีข้อติ ตรงที่ จอ LCD ซุปเปอร์วาย ที่ต้องมีขอบดำด้านขวา ใช้ร่วมกับวงแหวนด้านข้างจอ เช่นการเลือกโหมดการถ่ายภาพ การปรับความชัดตื้น(ฉากหลังนอกโฟกัส) ทำให้กะระยะการจัดองค์ประกอบยากขึ้นเมื่อถ่ายภาพที่มีความเข้มของสีสูง โดยเฉพาะในที่มืด ส่วนเรื่องความชัดใส เคลียร์ของจอ 921,600 จุด ชัดใสเคลียร์และสวยที่สุดสำหรับกล้องที่เคยเทสมาในระดับราคาเท่านี้

เมมโมรี่หลากหลาย SD และเมมโมรี่สติ้ก

ก่อนเดินทางค่อนข้างกังวลว่าเมมโมรี่จะพอหรือไม่ เพราะ เมมโมรี่สติ้กที่มีอยู่กับตัวตอนนี้มีเพียงแค่ 4 GB พอเปิดช่องเสียบเมมโมรี่ดูก็โล่งใจ เพราะสามารถใส่ SD Card ได้ด้วย แต่หากเลือกได้จะเลือกใช้เมมโมรี่สติ้ก เพราะการทำงานที่เร็วกว่า เสถียรกว่า เห็นได้ชัดเมื่อถ่ายภาพเคลื่อนไหว หรือการถ่ายภาพนิ่งที่ต้องใช้ความเร็วในการประมวลผลสูงๆ อย่างโหมดถ่ายกลางคืนโดยใช้มือถือ หรือถ่ายภาพต่อเนื่อง 7ภาพต่อวินาที

แบตเตอรี่

NEX5 ใช้กับแบตเตอรี่ลิเทียม NP-FW50 ขนาด 1020 มิลลิแอมป์ ถือว่าไม่สูงมาก สำหรับการใช้งานในครั้งนี้สามารถอยู่ได้ทั้งวัน เพราะเป็นคนถ่ายแล้วไม่ค่อยดูรูป และใช้ค่อนข้างประหยัดเพราะไม่สามารถหาที่ชาร์จแบตเตอรี่ได้ ชอบตรงที่บอกสถานะของแบตเตอรี่เป็นเปอร์เซ็น ทำให้กะการใช้งานได้ง่าย แต่สำหรับผู้ใช้งานทั่วไป ต้องดูลักษณะการใช้ว่าเป็นคนชอบดูรูป หรือถ่ายภาพเยอะแค่ไหน ถ้าชอบมากก็คงต้องซื้อแบตเพิ่มอีก 1ก้อน

โดยสรุป

ความรู้สึกสำหรับกล้อง Sony nex5 เป็นกล้องที่ประทับใจอีกตัว เหมาะสำหรับผู้ที่กำลังเบื่อกับการแบกกล้องใหญ่ๆ ที่รู้สึกเป็นภาระในการเที่ยว หรือมีปัญหาปวดหลัง เมื่อต้องแบกเป้ใบใหญ่ เปลี่ยนเลนส์ได้ คุณภาพภาพสวยมาก โดยเฉพาะในที่แสงน้อยทำงานได้ดีเยี่ยม สามารถนำมาตบแต่งในคอมพิวเตอร์ได้โดยไม่เสียรายละเอียด(สามารถถ่าย Raw File) ด้วยเซ็นเซอร์ที่ใหญ่ทำให้สามารถควบคุมชัดลึก(ภาพนิ่ง + วีดีโอ) ทำหน้าชัดหลังเบลอเหมือนกล้อง DSLR

ส่วนความรู้สึกต่อสิงคโปร์นั้น การไปเที่ยวครั้งนี้ทำให้รู้คุณค่าของเมืองไทย และสะท้อนใจที่สิงคโปร์เป็นเกาะที่ไม่มีทรัพยากรณ์อะไรเลย ต้องซื้อต้องนำเข้าทั้งหมด ทั้งอาหารน้ำ ซึ่งเป็นปัจจัยหลักในการดำรงชีวิต ราคาสูงมาก(น้ำ ขวดละ7 บาทของไทยที่สิงคโปร์ขายขวดละ50 บาท) จำเป็นต้องสร้าง ทุกอย่างให้ทันสมัย ไม่เว้นแม้กระทั่งแผ่นดิน คนที่นี่มีวินัยสูง กฎหมายแรงหากมีการทิ้งขยะในที่สาธารณะ ต้องโดนปรับ 200 เหรียญ( 4800 บาท)ไม่เหมือนเมืองไทย ที่ในน้ำมีปลา ในนามีข้าว พวกเราอยู่กันอย่างสุขสบาย สามารถผลิตสิ่งที่เป็นปัจจัยพื้นฐานในการดำรงชีวิตได้ทั้งหมด นึกถึงคำสอนในตำราที่โดนปลูกฝัง ว่าจะทำเมืองไทยให้เป็นนิค เกิดคำถามขึ้นในใจว่า จะสร้างบ้านเมืองให้ก้าวหน้าทางเทคโนโลยีและอุตสาหกรรมให้ทันประเทศอื่นที่ มีทรัพยากรไม่เท่าเราไปทำไม ในเมื่อจุดเด่นที่เรามีอยู่กับตัวเป็นสิ่งที่มีค่าและมีความสำคัญต่อชีวิต ที่สุดแล้ว

The SD/IXUS range is made up of Canon's 'style-orientated' compact cameras and, as the rest of the market has fragmented into innumerable niches, the range has grown to accommodate an increasing variety of needs. The SD4000 IS tops the current lineup, offering a 3.8x wide-angle zoom and (despite its underlying point-and-shoot disposition) aperture and shutter priority modes. In addition the SD4000 IS is the first of its family to be based around a back-lit CMOS sensor that enables several high speed modes and promises improved low-light performance.

The SD4000 IS's low-key styling belies the fact that it's actually a very well-specified compact camera. In addition to the relative novelty of a back-lit CMOS sensor, it also features a lens that starts at a 28mm equivalent F2.0 - impressive even if it ends up at a rather less noteworthy F5.3 at the 105mm equivalent end of its zoom range. We're curious to see the effect of using a back-side illuminated CMOS sensor in the SD4000 IS, because in our experience the promises made for the low-light capability of these sensors (which gather light from what would be the back of a conventional CMOS design and thus remove all the support circuitry from the light path), are not always obvious compared to some of the most modern CCD designs.

However, the SD4000 IS does capitalize on the CMOS sensor's faster readout compared to CCD, using it to offer 720p HD video, 3.7fps full resolution continuous shooting, 8.4fps reduced resolution images and even 240fps movies which are played back at 30fps to give a slow-motion effect. Being the top of Canon's style compact range, the SD4000 IS also has a selection of extra shooting modes such as fisheye and miniature (mock tilt/shift) modes.

Nikon has developed a habit of making very attractive entry-level DSLRs, which are rarely the best specified but cleverly designed so that they're easy and enjoyable to shoot with. The D3000 fitted this pattern perfectly, a gentle refresh of the D60 (which was itself a slightly updated D40X), it added ease-of-use features to make it a pleasant little camera despite a specification that was beginning to look rather out-of-step with the rest of the market.

The D3000 sold well, despite its rather aged 10 megapixel sensor and lack of both live view and video. However, there's only so long that clever product design and feature integration can make up for a specification that looks dated. So with this in mind, Nikon has announced the D3100 - probably the biggest refresh of its entry-level offering since it really attacked the low end market with the original D40.

The D3100 is built around a 14.2 megapixel CMOS sensor (possibly the one seen in Sony's NEX cameras?), bringing not only live view but also Full HD video capture to Nikon's entry-level model. This not only makes it the company's second-highest pixel-count SLR (after the D3X) but also makes it the first to offer 1920x1080 movie recording. It can only record clips up to ten minutes long but it's still an impressive feature addition at this level.

The body gets a slight refresh, gaining an extra button to the left of the screen, a drive mode switch at the base of the mode dial, a sprung lever to engage live view and a direct record movie button. There are also revisions made to the feature-teaching, hand-holding 'Guide Mode' and an additional autofocus mode to allow better focusing in live view and autofocus during video shooting.

A year after unveiling the world's first compact with a built-projector, Nikon has introduced its successor - the S1100pj. Built around the same stabilized 28-140mm equivalent lens as the S1000pj, it comes with a 14.1Mp sensor and larger, higher resolution 460K dot 3.0" LCD.The body design has also been slightly modified and the projector improved to offer great brightness, image size and throw distance. The company has also launched the image-stabilized 12.2 megapixel S5100, which offers a wide angle 5x zoom lens (28-140mm equiv.), 2.7 inch LCD and HD video recording.

Compact Camera Group Test: SLR-like 'super zoom' cameras

It's now more than a year since we published our last superzoom group test and despite the hype surrounding mirrorless system cameras such as Micro Four Thirds or the Sony NEX, and the fact that entry level DSLRs are becoming more and more affordable, superzoom cameras are as popular with consumers as ever. It is easy to see why. The combination of a large zoom range from wideangle to super telephoto, DSLR-like ergonomics and an attractive price point guarantee that these cameras appeal to a very broad audience.

All of the major camera manufacturers carry now at least one 'super zoom' in their lineup and the task of choosing between different cameras is complicated by the frequently minimal specification and design differences between them. We want to help you find the camera that is right for you and to that end we decided to look at nine of the latest models and run them through our testing procedures.

Most of the cameras in this group test offer even more zoom range than their predecessors. Both these shots were taken from the same position with the Fujifilm HS10 and represent the greatest range currently offered in a compact camera lens, 30x (24-720mm equivalent in this case).

The sensors in these cameras are considerably smaller than you will find in a DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens model. One of the advantages of a smaller sensor is that, compared to an SLR, you need a physically much smaller lens. As you can see from the cameras in this test, it's possible to fit a huge 20x, 24x or even higher zoom range into a body small enough to still be manageable. As far back as 2000 Sony and Olympus had models with 10x zooms that, though bulky (and expensive) compared to modern superzooms, were smaller and a lot less pricey than a digital SLR with lenses covering the equivalent range. And those key advantages - price and portability - have ensured that despite the arrival of the budget digital SLR and mirrorless cameras the superzoom camera has remained popular.

The latest generation of superzoom cameras incorporate such large zoom ranges that, if you were to try to match them for use on a full-frame DSLR, you'd end up with something so large and imposing you'd expect it to need a special weapons export licence. Even on these small-sensor cameras, the lenses are necessarily large enough to dominate the design of the cameras. The result is that most of these superzooms look pretty much like SLRs - a hand-grip with a large protruding tube at the front.

The race between manufacturers to maintain a competitive advantage has seen the average zoom range extend from 10x to more than double that figure. The good news is that, as well as engaging in an arms race to see who can put the largest zoom ratio sticker on the front of the camera, manufacturers have also started to expand the wide end of lens - as wide as 24mm equivalent focal length in the case of the Fuji HS10.

All ten models in this group offer zoom ranges of at least 18x, covering ranges from wide angle to super telephoto, and all feature some form of optical or mechanical image stabilization - essential when working at such extreme magnifications. Other common features include electronic viewfinders, full photographic control, HD video modes and, for the most part, they have a pretty similar design. Some of this latest generation of superzooms also feature backlit CMOS sensors instead of the more conventional CCDs.

Advantages of CMOS over CCD include lower noise levels, and - chiefly -higher frame rates in both still and video capture. However, the photodiodes on conventional CMOS sensors are typically smaller, due to their associated circuitry, leading to lower light-gathering efficiency and correspondingly higher noise. So-called 'back side illuminated CMOS' technology simply means that the sensors are more efficient at gathering light, due to the circuitry that accompanies the photodiodes being moved to the rear of the light gathering surface. This should mean greater efficiency, leading to cleaner output compared to conventional CMOS, especially in poor light at high ISO settings.

The test cameras

Panasonic was arguably the first major manufacturer to popularize the concept of SLR-like superzoom cameras with the FZ10 and FZ20 back in 2003/2004. However, nowadays virtually all main manufacturers have recognized the earning potential in this sector of the market and have at least one superzoom in their model line-up. We've selected nine of the most recent models for this test.
