There is more than the sound of music in the majestic mountains of Poland going on in these crisis struck days. As traditional lace making has taken a downturn - handmade lace lingerie has taken a rise to support a local village.

KONIAKOW, POLAND - The only thing Malgorzata Krakowska didn't expect during an economic world crisis this holiday season was for her talent for making lace to make her busier, by doing less.

Using a craft passed down from her mother, and from her mother's mother, Krakowska is using her talent for crafting lace in creative, eyebrow-raising ways. Hand made lace lingerie has hit the world by storm, and for Krakowska this is a matter of sink or swim.

"I just can't believe how successful this is," says Krakowska. "If we still lived off our tradition lace products we'd be very hungry right now."

The lace making tradition started nearly 200 years ago has been passed through her family ever since, and even though she will spend 8 hours making one thong that's a far cry from the solid week it would take for a traditional tablecloth.

"My mom taught me how to do lace, and we've done that all our lives. We thought, why not try selling something new," she says. "Something which doesn't take so long to make."

Where the inspiration for creating such minimalistic things like g-strings, thongs and bra and pantie sets came from - she wouldn't reveal but hinted it had been done for much longer and was inspired by the nature surrounding Koniakow.

"This is what we do," Krakowska translated for her mother Ania. "We've been doing this for a long time, and some people think by making lingerie we're dishonoring the Koniakow lace tradition - but, we need to eat too."

The economic crisis has left few alone, and for the lace makers of the tiny village of Koniakow, Poland they are no exception.

A little too new for the conservative Polish church. A local priest had to step in to prevent a full blown riot in the Catholic region. But things are calmer now and business is booming.

These days, Marie-Joelle Dulude wears "Bridget Jones-style underwear, all the way." But it didn't used to be that way. Before the 29-year-old federal government employee became pregnant with her first child, she used to wear low-rise panties.

"There's no fashion" in her current big-panty look, complains Dulude, who is on maternity leave. "You don't feel sexy."

The lingerie we like to wear says a lot about who we are.

Traditionally worn for hygienic purposes, intimate apparel has taken on a personality of its own. "In gym (change room), people will say to you, 'Oh, cool colours,' 'really funky underwear,' " says Pascale Baribeau, a bouncy 13-year-old who likes printed briefs.

But her mother doesn't have the same idea of what is stylish. "My mom is Bridget Jones -- classic underwear, not funky," says Pascale. "I like pink and black."

And these days there's a lingerie style to suit everyone. Underwear comes in all shapes and sizes, wrapped in satin bows and decorated with intricate lace, chiffon frills, even velvet. Some undergarments are purposeful, such as "shape-enhancer" bras, corsets and shorts. Others have nice esthetics, like stringy G-strings that prevent panty lines and don't wedge if you buy the wrong size. There are see-through silks and glow-in-the dark fabrics. Edibles. Disposables. Not to mention crotchless.

Fashion lingerie retailers such as La Senza are taking the lingerie business to a new level and going high-tech.

"It's not just about bows and ribbons. It's the new technology for making bras and panties," says Caroline Sacchetti, executive vice-president of La Senza's merchandising in Canada.

Sacchetti is referring to the company's newest bra and panty, the I-Tec. "It's a high-tech fabric -- a one-piece bra and a no-seams, invisible fabric, sheer panty." Shaped like a boy short, the incredibly light panty is invisible under clothes and the bra has no seams anywhere, even at the sides of the cups.

Even maternity wear can be sexy and still comfortable, says New York lingerie designer Daniella Simon, who grew up in Montreal.

"It's the opposite of your grandmother's maternity panty," says Simon, whose low-rise, under-the-belly maternity underwear has sexy rhinestones and cute messages like "Coming soon," "Mommy-to-be" and "It's A Boy/Girl!"

In France, where designer trends date back centuries and lingerie shops can be found on every corner, underwear is a growing market. "French women spend more money on lingerie than on a mortgage. They'd never be caught dead wearing ugly lingerie," says Sue McGarvie, the Ottawa-based, internationally renowned sex therapist and radio host of Sex with Sue.

Canadian women aren't that passionate about their undies, but they do make demands, says Sacchetti. "We're not behind the trends. Canadians like comfort, but they also want styling behind the comfort."

But underwear selection can reveal more than personal taste. It can also tell a tale about your sex life. McGarvie cites a study showing a direct correlation between the frequency of wearing pretty and sexy lingerie and how often you have sex.

"(Wearing sexy underwear is) a secret thing. No one knows you're either looking for or have a lover." That's why lingerie is considered private, she says.

Even men express themselves through their "furnishings." When Bob Gelinas, 25, wears his blue-green boxers printed with bumble bees, he feels good, confident, powerful and clean. Evan Shabo, 22, prefers looser fits for weekdays, but wears tighter boxers in either blue or black on the weekend.

Lingerie can say "I'm available, I'm looking, I'm ready to go," says McGarvie.

Certain styles can also alter one's mood. Just think of how silk feels when brushed against your skin.

Wearing sexy underwear for yourself is great, but when it's a gift for someone on Valentine's Day, it can be a checkpoint for many relationships, says McGarvie.

"It says 'I am still in love with you, I find you attractive and I want you.' ''

Sexy lace lingerie a village asset in Koniakow, Poland

More than a few years ago, the hard-working and prodigious women of Koniakow, a hidden gem of a village in southwest Poland (the country's lacemaking headquarters), had a knotty problem: traditional lace sales were non-existant. Inspired by circumstances, they started crafting sexy lace thongs, g-strings, bras and beachwear that were sold to tourists around the entire southwestern region of Poland.

Shortly after this creative enterprise took off the ground, a group of lace makers was formed to sell the lingerie, and orders began pouring in from all over the world.

As revenue went up, however, so did the escalating tempers in the small village of 3,000. The National Folk Art Society started legal proceedings saying that the sexy lace lingerie was near-sacrilegious and a defamation of the village's 200-plus year lacemaking tradition.

Tradition aside - the sexy lace thongs drive sales in a village with little other industry to help pay the bills, and at the same time heat up romance in relationships around the world.

Made entirely of Egyptian or Turkish cotton, these lace gems are completely natural and the soft and silky feel of Koni-Art USA sexy lace lingerie is second to none.

Not all people in Koniakow are happy with the sexy lace lingerie. As seen on the official website www.koniartusa.com - some of the older women have protested such a disgrace of of the historic lace tradition in Poland.

This process isn't easy - as one dainty lace thong takes at least 5 hours to craft. Fine needlework is a necessary part of creating such intricate lingerie. And although a lace panty may sell for merely $35 - $80, these lace makers are making only $6 an hour, some times even less. And by American or Western European standards - that's minimum wage. In a small agricultural village in the mountains of Poland though - that $6 an hour helps pay more than the bills.

Proud of their soft, sexy and unique lingerie pieces - these scanty lingerie creations have helped save a village in tough economic times. From the fall of Communism to a rise in the potential spending power these panties have given Koniakow - days are much brighter for, not only, the lace crafters.
