Ia didakwa telah menerima uang tunai sejumlah Rp150.000.000,- dan beberapa Traveller’s Cheque (cek pelawat) yang berjumlah total Rp.850.000.000,- dari pemerintah Otorita Batam. Uang haram tersebut diduga ada kaitannya dengan anggaran pemerintah Otorita Batam dalam APBN Perubahan tahun 2009 yang berjumlah Rp 85 miliar.

Ketika ditanya oleh majelis hakim, Sofyan tidak menyangkal dakwaan tersebut. Ia mengakui memang pernah menerima uang sebesar itu dari pemerintah Otorita Batam, yaitu setelah APBN Perubahan tersebut ditetapkan. Namun, kilah Sofyan, uang itu tidak dinikmati sendiri olehnya, melainkan juga dipergunakan untuk pembangunan masjid di kompleks DPR Cakung, Jakarta Timur.

“Saya enggak merasa korupsi karena uang yang saya terima itu enggak saya manfaatkan untuk kepentingan pribadi dan orang lain. Jadi saya enggak ada beban. Siapa pun yang jadi pimpinan pembangunan masjid pasti akan mencari biaya ke sana ke mari,” ujar Sofyan.
