The new Planet of the Apes reboot is about to come out, because reboots are the cool thing now, right?  Read my post, RISE OF THE MOVIE REMAKES! Why are there so many remakes, for more on current state of movie making. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is Hollywood’s next attempt to milk an old franchise. Planet of the Apes is probably one of the greatest Science-Fiction movie franchises, but there have always been problems with the basic plot of the movie. The problem is that a “Planet of the Apes” could never happen. Here are the reasons.

1. Population

The Human population of the world is close to 7 billion.  The ape population is nowhere close to the billions.

Estimated Chimpanzee  population: 200,000

Estimated Orangutan population:  60,000

Estimated Gorilla population:  130,000

These numbers are just estimates, but most scientists would agree that these species are in danger of being extinct. So, there is no way such a small population could take over the planet from 7 billion humans. Even if the apes put up a good fight, they would undoubtedly suffer heavy casualties in the process.

2. Weapons

Humans have become good at making weapons. We have an arsenal of weapons including aircrafts, battleships, tanks, guns, and nuclear weapons. It is impossible that apes could access as many or the diversity of weapons that humans have accumulated over the years. Even if apes got a stock pile of guns and ammunition, we could attack them with tanks, fighter jets, and tactical missiles. As a last resort, we could still use nuclear weapons to wipe them all out.  Apes simply do not stand a chance.

3. Apes are no better than humans

Some groups, especially hippies, try to convince people that animals are better than humans.”Animals are so much nicer than people”, this is simply not true. Apes have been known to do some horrific things to each other. Chimpanzees are known to kill rival chimpanzees for territory,  food, and sex. There haven even  been many instances that chimps have attacked, and killed humans with little reason. Other apes are no better than chimps. Male Orangutans have been known to rape female Orangutans in the wild. Observed ape behavior has shown that violent behavior is not confined to humans. If Apes are just as violent as humans, wouldn’t they also think like humans about certain issues such as race? This is the ultimate problem with Planet of the Apes, how can three distinct species of Apes get along so well? Humans can’t even get along with each other for the most ridiculous reasons.  If Apes were able to take over the world, they would fight each other just like humans. Imagine it, Chimps vs. Gorillas vs. Orangutans in a death match.

These are top reasons why Apes could never take over the world from humans. The only way Apes could take over is if the human population became extinct. As a result the Apes would win by default, because humans no longer exist.

The conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians has given many the tragic belief that Arabs and Jews have been fighting for centuries. However, history shows that Arabs and Jews lived in peace for many years. Tensions between Jews and Arabs is not some sort ancient blood feud, but rather recent instance in history.

Things to know before reading

1. Not all Arabs are Muslim. In fact some Arabs belong to the Christian, and Jewish faith.

2. Some Jews do consider themselves Arabs or Middle Eastern. They are known as Mizrahi or Sephardic Jews.  

The Times of Muhammad

In the time that Muhammad lived in Medina there was peaceful relations between Jews and Muslims. There were even  times that Jews and Muslims actually fought together. The tribes of Medina  which included several Jewish tribes had sworn an oath to Muhammad to protect Medina. The Quraysih tribe, whom were enemies of Muhammad, set out to attack to Medina.  Unfortunately the battle was set to take place on the Sabbath, and many of the Jewish tribes did not want to fight.  A Rabbi by the name of Mukhyriq told his followers that they had to uphold their promise to Muhammad. So, on the Sabbath, Rabbi Mukhyrib, and some of his followers went to fight with Muhammad to protect Medina. The Muslims won , but during the battle Rabbi Mukhyrib was killed. Muhammad was upset when he learned about the death of  Mukhyrib. Muhammad  praised the  memory of the Rabbi and called him “the best of Jews”.

Middle-East During the Middle Ages (5th – 15th Century)

The European Middle Ages was also known in history as the “Islamic Golden Age” .  During this period much of the  world’s scientific progress came from Muslim countries while Europe was still in the “Dark Ages”.  Advancements in medicine, astronomy, philosophy, poetry, mathematics were made during this time.  These advancements were not only made by  Muslims, but Jews as well. Jewish scientists were allowed to practice their religion, and were able to contribute to scientific advancements.

Non-Muslims had very prominent positions in this era.  One example is The Islamic Sultan Saladin had many personal physicians that were Christians, and Jews. The most famous of Saladin’s Jewish physicians was Maimonides, who was also one of the greatest Jewish scholars. In the middle-ages Muslims, Christians, and Jews not only lived in peace, but also were trusted colleagues in scientific progress.

Morocco During World War II

During WWII, Morocco was a French protectorate . When the Germans occupied France a new government was formed called the Vichy French government (named after the city where it was based). The Vichy government allied themselves with the Germans, and followed the Nazi’s Anti-Semitic policies. The Vichy government instituted policies of identifying and rounding up Jews in France. They also instituted Anti-Semitic policies in  French controlled territories  like Morocco.  Morocco during this time had population of 200,000 Jews. For many years Jews and Arabs lived in peace in Morocco. King Mohammad V of Morocco  refused to obey orders by the Vichy government to identify all Jews in Morocco. Mohammad V believed that the Anti-Semitic  policies was against Islamic law, which protects Non-Muslims that live in Muslim countries. The King  replied to the Vichy government by saying “There are no Jews in Morocco. There are only subjects”.  If it was not for the actions of King Mohammad V, the Jewish population in Morocco could have suffered a horrible fate.

By showing these historical examples I hope that you understand that Jews, and Arabs can live in peace.  The current tensions between Arabs, and Jews is recent, and not an ancient blood feud. If it was possible for Jews and Arabs to live in peace in the past, there is no reason it could happen in the future.

How did the tensions between Jews and Arabs begin?

After World War II many Jews fled  from Europe to the British protectorate of Palestine. The major reason that Jews fled to Palestine was because  European Jews could not go anywhere else . Many countries during and after World War II would not accept  a large amount of Jewish immigrants. Also, at this time many Arab countries were under the control of European countries such as Britain, and France.  There was a lot of anger by Arabs towards Europeans for occupying their countries.

When the British allowed Jewish immigration into Palestine many Arabs considered this European colonization. This confusion is understandable considering that the majority of Jewish immigrants were from Europe. Eventually Arab anger manifested itself as violence towards  the Jewish immigrants. These Jewish immigrants believed they were being victimized for similar reasons that Europeans victimized them during World War II.  Jewish immigrants were not fully aware of the building anger of Arabs towards Europeans, because of European Imperialism.  The fact that the immigrants were Jewish was less of a factor than they were European immigrants.  Today, the hatred between the two groups has evolved into a religious and racial conflict. This is a result of recent generations neglecting to understand how the conflict began.

Before the apprehension of Anders Brevik many thought the attacks was the work of al-Qaeda and their allies. Reporters discussed Norway’s membership in NATO, operations in Libya and Afghanistan as possible reasons for the attacks. When the police finally apprehended Anders Brevik many were surprised that he was blonde, blue-eyed,  and a native Norwegian. The only good thing that may come out these attacks is that it will remind us that evil can come in all forms. For many years people always blame Islamic militants initially for any violent attacks. This trend  of blaming Islamic militants started with the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center by al-Qaeda in 1993. Since the 1993 attack people  have always looked to Islamic Militants as their prime suspect. This video shows how Islamic militants were the initial  suspect in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings.  The Oklahoma City bombings and Oslo attacks are similar in the respect that people blamed the wrong culprits. Later it was discovered that Tim McVeigh, an American was responsible for the bombing. Some people refused to believe that an American could kill so many of their own.

Evil is not confined to one nation, one religion, or one race. The potential for evil resides in every one of us.  The choices we make is what makes us good or evil. The major problem is that evil does not always recognize itself as evil.  Many times in history people believe they’re doing good, but do evil things. The best example is Hitler who believed all his actions were justified to protect Germany. Anders Brevick also claimed his actions were for the good of his country, and described himself as a modern Knight.  We must be aware that evil can come from anyone, and any place. If we neglect this fact we put ourselves in great danger.

Women’s sports usually don’t get the same level as coverage as men sports. Recently the 2011 USA women’s soccer team received plenty of media coverage when they defeated Brazil in overtime in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, and then went on to beat France 3-1 in the semi-finals.  Their level of coverage in the U.S. was surprising  considering the sport was soccer which is not popular in America. Professional soccer in the U.S. doesn’t receive much media coverage, and does not receive the same level of financial  support as other sports like baseball. You can imagine the frustration for the players when dedicate your life to a sport that is not appreciated, and you’re a women.

The U.S.  Women’s  Professional Soccer League barely survives today, because of the lack of financial support. Most U.S. female professional soccer players get paid little compared to their male counterparts which is not saying much. The lack of support for female leagues  is not unique to soccer. The Women’s National Basketball Association suffers from financial troubles and only survives because it receives funding from the NBA. Part of the problem is the lack of awareness of female sports leagues. Most people are familiar with the NFL, but did you know there is a female football league. No I’m not talking about the Lingerie Football League. It is sad that most people are only familiar with men’s leagues. When you look at the facts it is clear that female sports are not popular with the public, and receives very little media coverage.

Why are female leagues not more popular? It’s hard to believe when there are more women than men. So, shouldn’t women sports technically be more popular?  Unfortunately women’s sports is  not that even close to as popular as men’s sports even among women. The main reason that society has a negative stereotype of female athletes. Men typically put down each other by comparing each other to women; you throw like a girl, my mother can play better, my sister can hit harder than you.  The general public assumes that women are not as strong nor as talented as male athletes. This is why women’s sports fields are shorter, female sports equipment are lighter, and women have different standards for competition.There is nothing wrong to say that men are naturally stronger than a woman, because it’s scientifically true that men tend to be physically stronger than women. However, it goes too far to say that  a woman is not capable of making up the physical difference between men and women. Although, Team USA lost to Japan in the World Cup finals this team has more heart and talent than most men’s soccer teams.

Team USA helped women sports gain more respect in the eyes of the American public. They had to overcome challenges of being female athletes, and dedicating their lives to a sport that is not really appreciated in America.  They deserved all media attention they received. Not because they are women, but because they are great American athletes.

The murder of children is unfortunately not unusual. There have been many cases of parents accused of murder this year. An Alabama couple were accused of torturing his two children, who were then murdered.  This case is more horrific than the Casey Anthony Trial, so why wasn’t that in the news. Was it because the Casey Anthony Trial was about a mother accused of killing a young child? That can’t be the reason, because there have been many cases of mothers accused of killing their children. Texas mother Julianne McCrery made her first court appearance in the murder of her 6-year-old son. Again I ask, why does the Casey Anthony Trial get special media coverage? When you give one case special attention others, you are basically stating that the lives of the other victims do not matter as much. We should not pretend that the abuse and murder of children is rare. What happened to Caylee Anthony was horrible, but it’s not unique.

There are Tragedies All Around The World 

At this very second people are dying in Libya, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. In Libya people are fighting, and dying for their freedom from a horrible dictator. People are being killed in Syria for protesting against their government.Also, the United States is still fighting two wars. Recently in Iraq three U.S. soldiers were killed.  In Afghanistan the U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan have reached 1,542. There is nothing we can do to bring back Caylee Anthony, but it’s possible to save the lives of others all around the world right now.

Innocent Until Proven Guilty

Many already decided that Casey Anthony was guilty even before the case began. Many are now upset that she was found innocent, but in the U.S. you are innocent until proven guilty.  The problem is that the how and where Caylee died is still a mystery. Her remains were so mutilated  by animals that determining how she died is impossible. Her death could have been easily an accident, and her mother covered it up.  There is no proof that Casey Anthony was directly responsible for her daughter’s death. The lack of proof, and the possibility of an accidental death means nobody has the right to judge Casey Anthony as a murderer. The sad fact that we may never know how Caylee died.

In Conclusion

There are many of you who feel quite passionate about this case. I’m sure many of you will not agree with me, and some of you are mad that I feel this way. I do care about the death of  young Caylee Anthony, but I don’t think its’ more important than the other horrible things going on the world this very minute.

4. Wicker Man

Plot:

 English can be a funny sounding language.

Recently I watched the new Karate Kid movie with Jaden Smith for the first time. I thought the film was good, but not better than the original. However, the reason I’m mentioning the movie is because of two scenes in the movie that I made my think of my own life. In one scene Jaden Smith’s character is talking to the Chinese girl who plays his love interest in movie. She asks him “Can I touch your hair?” and Jaden looks confused by her request, but lets her touch his hair. The second scene in movie was when Jaden takes his mother to place where they teach Kung Fu to children. All the little children learning Kung Fu come up to his mother and start touching her hair. When I saw this I started to laugh, because I had similar moments in my life. For some reason people always want to touch my hair and watching this move reminded me of some funny moments in my life.

Let me tell you a little about myself. I come from a Middle Eastern background. So, I have really dark, and curly hair. Also, I’m rather fair-skinned compared to most Middle Eastern people so it makes my hair more noticeable for people.  I know I’m not the only one with these features, but I attended high school in the Midwest America. A kid with dark black hair stands out of the crowd with people who are mostly blonde and brown-haired. My father jokes that when he to pick me up from school that he could instantly find me from a crowd of hundreds of kids. My father wasn’t the only person to point out my uniqueness. I use to get all sorts of weird comments from people. The comments were memorable to say the least.  If anything I find these stories to be funny.

The first comment I got was in my first period art class in high school. Everyone was working on their painting project. The kid who sat next to me was painting wrestlers in a match. He decided to paint one the wrestler’s hair black. The art teacher came around to see how everyone was doing with the project. She notices that the kid next to me painted the wrestler’s hair black. She commented “Nobody’s hair is that black”, and the kid pointed at me “His hair is black”. The teacher responded “oh yea…that’s unusual”. I thought to myself “what did she just say?” I decided to pretend I didn’t hear what she said. I wished I said “Yea there are millions of us”. It’s probably for the best that I didn’t say that.

The next weird incident was hands down the strangest. I was at my locker putting away my books. Then a guy I knew from class named Jake and one of his friends comes up to me. “Look at his hair. He has black people hair” said Jake to his friend. Then Jake pointed at me, and told his friend “Touch it”. This kid that I never meet before had his hands all in my hair. I literally said “what the fuck”, and pushed the kid’s hand away. The kid said “oh, I’m sorry”, and I just let it go, and went to my next class. I don’t know what kind guy thinks it is okay to touch another guy’s hair. I will always remember that strange comment “He has black people hair” That probably the strangest comment I have ever received.

I said before that most people who live in Midwest America usually have straight blonde or brown hair, as a result most of the girl’s I dated were either blonde or brunette. It seems like every girl I ever dated loved to touch my hair. I never minded if a girl I was dating wanted to touch my hair, but sometimes it got ridiculous. A funny moment happened when I slept over my former girlfriend’s house. I woke up to find her still sleeping and that she had both her hands grasping my hair. I found this very odd, and I asked her why she liked touching my hair? Her response was “I don’t know, I never been with a guy with really curly hair.” I will never understand why people are so fascinated about my hair, but it makes for a funny story.
