A Message from a Hostess

Please join us for a Korean study group – Intermediate/Advanced level, every Saturday, 11-1, starting May 11, 2013, at the Yellow House Café, 234 S Oxford Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90004 (close to Western and 3rd). Street parking is available. Vallet parking is also available after 12pm. Ask for the Korean study group.

We invite Korean native speakers to help us out every Saturday, whenever available. This is NOT a class with an instructor. It’s an interactive study group. Each student prepares and brings material they would like to go over with the group. We will have a back-up “lesson plan” which covers material reviewed in preparation for the TOPIK exam - Advanced level.

We are looking for more Intermediate to Advanced level students and Korean native speakers to join our group. Native speakers do not need to bring any material. No teaching experience necessary. In exchange, we treat our native speakers for lunch/coffee!

Usually our workshop days are designed to accommodate multiple levels of Korean learners. This time, we will have a different kind of workshop: a Full-Day Intensive Classes dedicated to Beginners (and Novice).

Classes will be intensive, but you will be in a casual and laid-back setting. Let's laugh and have fun while learning too.

That's right, we’re having a Bungae today!

WHAT IS BUNGAE?

Bungae is an Internet jargon to mean "a meet-up with last-minute notice." Bungae (번개, [bunn-gay]) means thunder, which appears in many Korean colloquial expressions to mean something extremely quick. So you can guess how this word came to mean a last-minute meetups in Korea.

Although 번개 is the eponym, it is often spelled as 번게, 벙개, or 번게. There's a reason for it, but I would not want to bore with you it. I hope we see you at the future Bungaes!

This event was moved from Second Saturday to Third Saturday for May only. We apologize for this change.

Let's meet for an easy-going and relaxed workshop - but on a serious topic: Korean Vocabulary.

We will use whatever tools necessary to expand our vocabulary. We will start with basics and move to practical then to higher level. We will be guided throughout the workshop to pick up new vocabs, play silly games, and sing silly songs. We will divide into groups - or be paired up - and help each other memorize new words and encourage each other to move forward and up.

Our focus is not on grammar, but you will be shown a quick-and-dirty grammar points that will help you double your vocabulary. We will also discuss what we do to help ourselves in this area.

As always, your RSVP is strongly recommended. Your RSVP helps us minimize the cost of the event - so that we can keep on organizing events like this at very low cost.

If you are new to Hangeul or not quite proficient at it yet, I will show you easy way to memorize the writing system in a short period of time. You will be also introduced to the basics of Korean sentence so that you can be ready for novice and higher level workshops.

1 PM - Novice
This workshop usually covers first 15 chapters of most textbooks out there.

2 PM - Upper Novice - Intermediate
We will keep on moving up as long as the time allows.

3 PM - Upper Intermediate - Advanced
If we have enough upper intermediate to advanced students, this workshop will happen. If we don't, it won't. So be certain to let me know your level, please!

A couple of years ago Jamie hosted Mandu Fest, and everyone had a wonderful time! She's hosting another fun event in March - Korean Taco and Movie Day. And you're invited!

Sogaeting(소개팅)? What does it mean exactly?

We are having a Valentine-themed Workshop and "Ask a Korean" meetup today. In observance of this workshop, I thought you may be interested in one of many aspects of Korean dating culture: Sogaeting (소개팅).

Question today comes from Cris who asked about "소개팅."

I have the understanding that 소개팅 means something like introducing something in the form of "matchmaking". I heard my korean cousin saying it in a joking manner, but i wasn't sure what it meant.

Answer:
(1) Short answer:

As you said, 소개팅 is matchmaking, not necessarily for the marriage but just to introduce one person to another, which may lead to a date in the future (even on the same day if both like each other).

There is a word for matchmaking when people are introduced to each other specifically for marriage: 선 (or 맞선).

Hence the word 소개팅 is used in looser and casual sense. It's meant to be a "no-pressure" "introductory session."

(2) Long answer:

소 개팅 is a compound word, coming from 소개 + 팅. As you noted, 소개 means introduction. So let's talk a little about the cultural history of "팅."

I'm quite certain the young Koreans these days still have something called 미팅. 미팅 comes from an English word, "meeting." But as most of words do when they're "imported" into another culture, the word 미팅 in this case does not mean what English word means.

미팅 is when a group of male and female in a balanced ratio meet to get to know each other, which may lead to a real date later that day or some other time. For instance, you will have 3 of your male friends come, and I will have 3 of my female friends come. As leaders of this 미팅, you and I have a choice to be a part of it, but usually we opt out. The group will find a way to pair up (either in the beginning or toward the end, with help of leaders or not - there are many ways of doing this). And then if the pair likes, they go on a date - or not.

As 미팅 implies a certain level of matchmaking, Koreans begun to add "팅" to various nouns to mean some other type of matchmaking. While 미팅 is done in a group, they also needed something to mean one-on-one introduction that doesn't necessarily mean 선 (See the short answer above). So they created a word 소개팅.

I've heard folks saying 야외팅(outdoor 미팅), 동아리팅 (Those who belong to certain interest groups respectively meet), and many other.

~팅 is meant to introduce two or more strangers. You don't use it for those who already know each other.

Lasty, 미팅 is also used to mean conference or business meeting. So we need to see the context to detect what the speaker meant to say.

I am quite certain most of us are clear about event rating system. Still, may I ask for 2 minutes of your time and read about it?

As you know, a few sites of KLCX has an event rating system. Your volunteers are always excited to be able to put together something you can come and enjoy; and all members long to hear how much you enjoyed the event as an attendee. Rating system is a quick way to leave your feedback. Your 15 seconds make a big difference for everyone, including yourself in the long run.

Please rate the meetup you attended. When you do, please consider following:

When others see that the event was a 5-star worthy, they will be encouraged to come next time. You see, in order for us to continue no- and low-cost events, we need mass attendance. You can help us by rating the event you attended.
You can encourage and motivate your volunteer staff to continue to make things happen for you. The only compensation they get is your words of encouragement. So just by rating, you motivate them!

Please rate based on the effort and content of the meetup.

Please do not rate based on the food you had, service by the venue, parking situation, people you liked or didn't like. None of your volunteers have any control over them.

Here comes the February Second Saturday Series!

Celebrating Valentine's Day, the theme of the month is "Dating and Relationship" and possibly other taboo-topics that we generally avoid. Naturally, to attend this meetup, you may need to keep your minds and views open. You must be over 21 years old.

This meetup will also get you ready for the Language Exchange later this month (pending). So please come join us!

We will have informal workshops and Q & A session in which you get to ask pretty much any question you've been wanting to ask a Korean, from pronunciation to culture to something you weren't quite sure whom to ask. Orange County KoreanLA Kickoff Event!

Last year, we began hosting events in Orange County in order to meet the needs of our members who lived in that area. We will be officially kicking off KoreanLA Orange County with a social event on February 4th. We will be meeting for Korean BBQ and then moving on to more fun events. Happy Seollal, everyone!

One of many fun things about being (or being around) a Korean is that we get to celebrate New Year twice a year. The second New Year is known as Lunar New Year for the rest of the world. Koreans call it Seollal(설날).

Seollal(설날) is the day that Koreans celebrate good days in the past, let go of bad spirits, and welcome all the good things to come. To celebrate this season, Koreans have many fun games they play, many blessings they say to each other, and many beautiful traditions that they observe.

For most of Koreans, Seollal(설날) is the "real" New Year. So there happens the world-renowned phenomenon called "Korean Exodus," caused by people who are heading out to their hometowns to visit their parents, relatives and ancestral memorial park. Seollal is such an important day that the whole country pretty much go on a vacation for 3-5 days.

Thanks for coming to the meetup yesterday. I hope you enjoyed the workshop and Q&A as much as I did.

I know the workshops were slow for some, fast for others, and just about right for the rest. Beginners did very well keeping up with intermediate - kudos to you! We had wide range of intermediate attendees in terms of proficiency level, and you were so patient with each other. Thank you!

As we have more attendees, we will be able to provide more levels appropriate for specific proficiency. So please spread the word and let others know about our group.

Don't forget to practice what you learned; and if you forgot what yo learned, no worries; we will have more classes and workshops.

Mark your calendar for the 2012 "Second Saturday."

This year, we will plan an event or two on Second Saturdays every month. So mark your calendar!

Being a Korean instructor myself, unless you give us event suggestions or ideas, we plan to offer something language-related in a little more serious nature, such as classes, workshops, study halls and Q&A sessions. We also have staff and Event Hosts who are full of fun and adventurous ideas! We may go out for dinner, picnic or, even to amusement parks!

Language Exchange may happen on Second Saturday, but for now, it may be hosted on the 4th or last weekend of the month. This scheduling is by popular request that you want to attend classes before you attend language exchange session.

My personal goal is to turn every experience that we have into something Korean - so that you can get to know subtle culture that lies underneath the language and behaviors, have a chance to practice your Korean, and just get to know others who share the same interest with you.

Dear friends and members of KLCX/KoreanLA,

I want to thank you for being a part of KLCX and KoreanLA. I know you have many groups and instructors to choose from. I thank you for choosing KLCX/KoreanLA and make it your "Korean Home."

I also want to thank all the volunteer staff for your hard work. Hosting events and classes is a lot of work. Your leadership is deeply appreciated. I hope you feel as proud as I am of KCLX/KoreanLA and how far we've come.

We pledge that we will continue to support you in exploring and having fun with Korean language and culture. Please let us know of your suggestions; we will do our best to make them happen. Please remember, all members are eligible to host your own events upon meeting a couple of qualifications.

Waking up like a Korean: Sunrise Hiking & Breakfast

Did you know that hiking is #1 activity amongst Koreans, both in Korea and overseas? So just for this morning, let's pretend that we're Koreans; if you're a Korean/Korean-American, let's pretend that we're in Korea.

THE WALK:
We will walk to the top of Santa Monica Mountain trail, welcome the sunrise, then enjoy the traditional Korean breakfast in the heart of Koreatown. Bring your windbreakers, walking shoes, a bottle of water, a few bucks for breakfast and your cameras to take pictures of you, of Hollywood sign on the top of the world, and of your Korean breakfast! The walk will be 40-60 minute long.

THE BREAKFAST:
If you never had traditional post-hiking Korean breakfast before, here's your chance to try it. Our KoreanLA's activity resource guru Soo Yun Kim suggested not only the trail but also introduced the restaurant we will be heading out to. I did R&D by visiting this restaurant; and I felt like I was in Korea!

IF YOU CAN'T JOIN THE WALK:
Join us at the breakfast anyway! Korean breakfast does not taste the same when not preceded by "Sunrise Hiking," so others say. So if you can, please re-consider and walk with us. Breakfast will be at about 8:30 am, give-and-take 1 hour. Please follow us on Twitter (@KoreanLA), and we will Tweet when we leave the parking lot. Note: We may "Check-in" via Meetup app too, but Twitter is faster, accurate, and all-inclusive.

Charari - '차라리'

Question today comes from 민들레 who asked about "차라리."

"차라리' 어떡해 써도 돼요?

Answer:
Before answering the question, a quick correction in the question itself:

"'차라리' 어떡해 써요?"

This is a "spoken form." When you write, you want to sound "educated" and "adult." So the recommended written Korean is:

"'차라리' 문장에서 어떻게 사용됩니까?"

Literally translated, it means "How is 차라리 used in a sentence?"

As in most languages, you want to learn both written and spoken form. But when you write, you want to be certain you write in written form.

Now, the answer to the question:

"차라리"는, 여러 가지 선택할 수 있는 것이 모두 좋지 않은데, 그 중 상대적으로 더 나은 것을 선택할 때 사용합니다. 보통 두 가지 중 하나를 선택할 때 사용합니다.
차라리 is used when you choose one from multiple options, usually two of them, and none of them are ideal choice. Think "lesser of two evils." The closest expression in English is "rather."

상황: 민들레님은 배가 많이 고픕니다. 그래서 식사를 해야 합니다. 그런데 집에는 상한 음식만 있습니다.
Circumstance: You are very hungry and need to eat something. But you can find nothing but spoiled food.

선택 1: 음식을 안먹습니다.
Option 1: You don't eat.

선택2: 상한 음식을 먹습니다.
Option 2: You eat spoiled food.

둘 다 선택할 수 있는 것이 마땅치 않습니다. 그래도 상한 음식을 먹는 것 보다는 그것을 안 먹는 것이 낫습니다. 이럴 때 민들레님은 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다.
Neither choice is exactly ideal. But it's better not to eat the spoiled food than eating them. In this situation, you can say something like this:

"차라리 굶겠습니다."
"I'd rather go hungry."

<문형 / Grammar>

"차라리"는 문장 처음에 옵니다. 다른 선택여지를 나열할 때는 선택하는 것의 문장 앞에 씁니다.
Usually "차라리" comes in the beginning of the sentence unless you're specifying the alternative. Place "차라리" in the beginning of the sentence in which you indicate your preferred choice.

보기:
- 차라리 굶겠습니다..
- 차라리 굶을망정 상한 음식은 안 먹겠습니다.
- 상한 음식을 먹느니 차라리 굶겠습니다.
주로 "ㄹ/을 바에야," "느니," "망정/-ㄹ/을 망정" 등등 함께 쓰여서 여러 문장을 잇습니다.
It usually accompanies "바에야," "느니," "망정/-ㄹ망정" to connect sentences/clauses.

보기:
- 상한 음식을 먹느니 차라리 굶겠습니다.
- 상한 음식을 먹을 바에야 차라리 굶겠습니다.
- 차라리 안먹을망정 상한 음식은 안 먹겠습니다.

그럼 이제, "-느니," "-ㄹ/을 바에야," "-ㄹ/을 망정"에 대해 설명하겠습니다.
Then, let me explain how we can add "-느니," "-ㄹ/을 바에야," "-ㄹ/을 망정" to the sentence.

-느니:
선택하지 않는 것을 나타낸 문장의 동사를 변형시켜 문장을 잇습니다. 그 다음에, "차라리"와 다른 문장을 추가하여 문장을 완성합니다.
Use this to conjugate the verb of the sentence which is NOT your preferred choice. Add 차라리 and the sentence which is your preferred choice.

보기: 상한 음식을 먹느니 차라리 안 먹겠습니다.
Option 1: 상한 음식을 먹겠습니다.
Option 2: 굶겠습니다.

안하겠다고 선택한 것은 1번입니다. 그래서 그 문장의 동사를 변형한 후 "차라리'를 써서 다음 문장과 연결합니다.
The one that you chose NOT to do is Option 1. So you conjugate the 먹겠습니다 using 느니, i.e. 먹느니. Then add "차라리," then the rest.

-> 상한 음식을 먹느니 차라리 굶겠습니다.
-ㄹ/을 바에야 & 위 "-느니"와 같은 방법으로 사용합니다. 단, 추가된 문법이 하나 더 있습니다.
Use the same method explained above for "-느니." But there's one more grammar point for you to remember.

"-ㄹ 바에야"는 앞소리가 모음으로 끝났을 때 씁니다.
"-ㄹ 바에야" is used when the last syllable of word ends with a vowel.

보기:
- 보다 -> 볼 바에야
- 좋아하다 -> 좋아할바에야

"-을 바에야"는 앞소리가 자음으로 끝났을 때 씁니다.
"-을 바에야" is used when the last syllable of word ends with a consonant.

보기:
- 먹다 -> 먹을바에야
- 앉다 -> 앉을바에야
-ㄹ/을망정

Step 1: 선택한 것을 나타낸 문장의 동사를 변형시켜 문장을 잇습니다.
Use this to conjugate the verb of the sentence which IS your preferred choice.

상한 음식을 안 먹고 굶기를 선택했으므로:
Since we chose to go hungry rather than to eat spoiled food:

- 굶다 -> 굶을망정

Step 2: "-ㄹ/을망정"을 사용할 때는 "차라리"가 선택한 것의 문장과 함께 쓰이는 경우가 많습니다.
For this one "차라리" seems to be associated with the one that you CHOOSE.

- 차라리 굶을망정

Step 3: 선택하지 않는 것을 나타낸 문장을 추가해서 전체 문장을 완성하세요.
Add the sentence to indicate what you choose NOT to do and complete the sentence.

- 차라리 굶을망정 상한 음식은 안 먹겠습니다.

끝으로, 법칙에는 언제나 예외가 있다는 것을 기억하세요. 한국어 실력이 향상될 수록 그 예외를 많이 보시게 되며, 도와주시는 선생님이 계시면 더 확실하게 배우실수 있습니다.
Lastly, always remember there are exceptions to rules - which you will find out as you improve your Korean skill and with help of your instructor(s).

(2) 학교에 안 갑니다.
