Rain Fueled by 'Fury' for 'Ninja Assassin'

For his first Hollywood lead role in "Ninja Assassin,'' Rain had to forget he was a pop star and trained alongside stuntmen for six hours a day, over six months ― all when he could have been comfortably playing sweet TV roles or dancing onstage for staunch Asian fans.

His secrets to achieving zero percent body fat? Anti-fans and mom, said the 27-year-old in a crowded press conference Monday in Seoul.

"There were many times when I wanted to return to Korea, where I could be busy giving concerts and starring in TV dramas and movies. I seriously contemplated it many times over the eight months (of shooting `Ninja Assassin.'),'' said Rain, who showed off his build in a fitted double-breasted suit.

But he stayed because he had made a promise to fans, and also because of his pride.

His trainers, who are now like family, would provoke him, saying that Matt Damon or Brad Pitt outperformed him in lifting 100-kilogram weights.

"I would also wake up in the morning and flip through the `very nice' newspaper articles that criticized me and read negative comments from anti-fans,'' he said about feeling compelled to prove himself. "I thought I had to show that I can make a debut in the United States rather than just talk about it.''

The modern martial arts flick is the South Korean superstar's second collaboration with the creators of "The Matrix'' series. He made his Hollywood debut in "Speed Racer,'' which was directed by the Wachowski brothers, and assumes his first lead role in the upcoming film, which is produced by the talented brothers and directed by James McTeigue ("V for Vendetta'').

This is also the first time a local star is playing the title role in a major Hollywood franchise.

He said he pulled off 90 percent of the stunt roles, using minimal wire support. He was hurt on many occasions, and though he didn't break any bones he bears "many scars of honor.''

Thinking about his late mother, however, fueled his "passion'' for the project.

"My mother used to wake up at 5 a.m. every day and would work all day, come home at midnight and go to sleep at 1 or 2 in the morning. She did this for many years to support me and my sister. I thought if I can't survive this I can't do anything. This is the beginning of a new stage in my life and I cannot afford to be lazy,'' he said.

"I heard people get three chances in life, and I've had my three: first when I met (music producer JYP or Park) Jin-young, second when I met the Wachowski brothers through `Speed Racer' and third, when they offered me the part for `Ninja Assassin,''' he said.

"I'd be lying if I didn't wish the movie to be a box office success, because everyone worked so hard. But regardless of the results this has opened a lot of doors for me, and I hope it will also open more opportunities for Asian actors, and particularly Korean actors,'' he said, since Asians still have "a low success rate'' in Tinseltown.

In addition to Rain, the movie stars Korean-American actors Randall Duk Kim and Rick Yune.

Rain plays the role of Raizo, an orphan who is trained by a secret ninja clan to become a deadly killer. But when Raizo witnesses the murder of his good friend, he turns his back on his clan and plots revenge. When asked if he could relate to his character, he said he hopes he has nothing in common with such an introverted, violent persona but hopes fans will discover a new side to his conventional image.

Rain will continue his promotional tour Nov. 11 to 22 across the U.S., including New York and Los Angeles. He will then visit Hong Kong Nov. 28 and 29, Jakarta, Indonesia on Dec. 3 and finally Shanghai through the following week of December.

Meanwhile, the pop singer will hold concerts in the U.S. for the first time in three years next month, Dec. 24 and 25 at Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas.

The movie, rated 18 and over, will open in theaters Nov. 26. 98 minutes. Distributed by Warner Brothers Korea.

Jang Dong-gun, Ko So-young Admit Romance at Last

The romance between actor Jang Dong-gun and actress Ko So-young has been confirmed. AM Entertainment, Jang's management agency, in a press release on Thursday afternoon said, "Jang and Ko have been good friends since appearing together in the film 'Love Wind, Love Song' (1998) and the relationship recently blossomed into romance."

However, it said there were no immediate plans for marriage. "If there is good news to be delivered we will let everyone know."

Rumors about Jang and Ko being together had spread several times in the past, but both had consistently denied them. But when rumors of impending marriage were reported Thursday afternoon, the management agency officially admitted it for the first time.

Lee Min-ho to Meet Japanese Fans

Lee Min-ho, the star of the hit drama "Boys Over Flowers,'' is holding his first fan meeting in Japan.

The 22-year-old actor has visited other Asian countries, including Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, for promotional events before, and this time he will meet his Japanese fans at "Minoz JAPAN First Event'' in Tokyo on Nov. 26.

The event was to be held only once, but with tickets selling out quickly, organizers decided to hold a couple more. Specific dates and venues of the additional events were not confirmed.

Before the actual fan meeting, Lee will also appear on talk shows and mini-concerts during the Korea Entertainment Festival, which will be held at Universal Studios Japan, Nov. 22. On Nov. 25, Lee will attend an autograph event for his first photo essay "Yeo, Travel with MINHO.''

Lee shot to stardom as the handsome and arrogant Goo Jun-pyo, depicting the Japanese cartoon character with the same dark curls and smile. The drama, along with the cast including Lee, Kim Beom, Kim Hyun-joong and the heroine Ku Hye-sun, captivated fans in Korea and Asia.

3 Starts to Share Lead in 'Legally Blonde' Musical

The starring role of Elle Woods in the musical "Legally Blonde" will be shared among three stars -- 2006 Miss Korea Lee Honey, Jessica of girl group Girls' Generation, and actress Kim Ji-woo. The Korean version of the musical opens on Nov. 14.

What do they bring to the part? This is Lee's second musical after "Polaroid," and she is probably the closest to the character of Elle Woods in that she was the winner of a beauty pageant and is a graduate of the nation's top university, Seoul National University, with a degree in Korean traditional music.

"It's a musical with modern music and dance full of elements that will appeal to female audiences," she says. "Just like Elle is fighting against the stereotypes of blonde beauties, I want to break the stereotypes of Miss Koreas."

Jessica is making her musical theater debut with "Legally Blonde." "It's physically tough as I'm quite busy with other things going on in addition to this musical. But it was one of my dreams to be part of a musical production, and I love the role, so I'm really happy to take part," she says. "I need to improve my acting, but I consider being part of a girl group a kind of acting. I'm similar to Elle in the fact that I never give up once I'm determined to do something. But I'm different from her because I'm more of a quiet, introverted person."

Kim is the most experienced of the three as she has appeared in other musicals including "Singles" and "Singing in the Rain." Kim says she is particularly attracted to "Legally Blonde" because "it is rare to find a musical that is led by one woman character." "Lee is sexy yet cute, and Jessica is cute yet sexy." She evaluates herself as "similar to Elle because she is outgoing and strives for change." "As I've spent some years doing musicals, I think I can now feel more relaxed being on stage."

Wonder Girls Break into Billboard Top 100

The Wonder Girls have entered the top 100 of the main U.S. Billboard chart with their song "Nobody," a first for a Korean artist. "Nobody" is currently ranked 76th on the Billboard Hot 100, four months after the girl group moved to the U.S.

The Billboard chart ranks songs according to airplay, album sales and digital downloads.

The English-language "Nobody" single sold over 30,000 copies within 10 days of its U.S. release. Korean pop star BoA's U.S. debut album hit 127th on the Top 200 chart in March.

Hard work and clever marketing helped propel the Wonder Girls to success in the U.S. The five-member group toured the U.S. from June to August as the opening act for the Jonas Brothers band, performing for over 1.5 million potential fans. "Nobody recognized us in the early stages of the tour, but after about a month there were around 300 to 400 people coming to see us after the shows," said Wonder Girls member Ahn So-hee.

"Nobody" was played at least 65 times on U.S. radio stations between Oct. 12 to 18, becoming the 107th most frequently played song on radio.

Jung Wook, president of group's agency JYP Entertainment, said they targeted open-minded American teens, using marketing tactics like promotions with youth clothing brands and selling albums in clothing shops as well as music stores. "I think our diversified marketing strategy really paid off," Jung added.

Photographs of a fully-recovered and chic-looking SS501 leader Kim Hyun-joong on set for a television commercial shoot were revealed on Thursday.

"We released the photos for fans who had been curious about Kim," said global cosmetics brand Tony Moly of the 23-year-old singer who turned up for a shoot last week.

The singer had halted all activities since early September after falling ill with the influenza flu while in Japan to promote his KBS hit TV series "Boys Over Flowers". He was discharged from the hospital with a clean bill of health but had not made a public appearance.

"We were in shoot from early morning to late at night but Kim did not seem tired and was having fun," a Tony Moly official at the scene of the shoot was quoted as saying.

The commercial is set for release in November.

Meanwhile, all five members of SS501 will perform at the Taipei Arena on Saturday. They have been on their "SS501 Asia Tour Persona 2009" since early August where they are set to perform at a total of 10 countries throughout Asia till early next year.

They are also set to make a comeback to the local music scene on October 20 with a new mini-album.

TVXQ Fails to Reach Agreement with Agency

The three members of the boy band TVXQ who asked the court to suspend their contracts with their agency, SM Entertainment, have failed to reach an agreement with the agency.

The Seoul Central District Court tried to settle the matter on September 30 between Xiah (real name Kim Jun-soo), Hero (real name Kim Jae-joong) and Mickey (real name Park Yoo-chun) and SM Entertainment, but to no avail.

The three members reportedly refused to negotiate. The court will not summon the three members again and will reach the final decision soon.

The three TVXQ members applied for a provisional disposition on July 31, citing unfair terms and conditions in their 13-year contracts with SM Entertainment.

Kang Hye-jung, Tablo to Wed on Oct. 26

Actress Kang Hye-jung will tie the knot with singer Tablo, the leader of Korean hip hop group Epik High, at 2 p.m. on Oct. 26, Tablo's management agency Map the Soul announced on Saturday. Another member of Epik High, DJ Tukutz, gets married on Tuesday.

Early this month, Kang admitted she was five weeks' pregnant and said she and Tablo will get married in October. Their relationship became public in February. "Because Tablo is busy with his new album and I'm also busy with the shooting of the film, we don't even have time to talk about our future," Kang said at the time.

Kang and Tablo met last year. Tablo delivered the news of Kang's pregnancy last month, promising they would get married "soon." The wedding will be a strictly private event, and the venue is not known.

Epik High on Saturday gave their last promotional performance for their sixth album on MBC's Show Music Core as DJ Tukutz starts his mandatory military service right after his wedding this week.

Daniel Henney Snags Lead in U.S. TV Drama

Korean-American actor Daniel Henney, who rose to stardom in Korea with the hit drama "My Name is Kim Sam-soon," has landed a leading role in the U.S. drama "Three Rivers," which will be broadcast on CBS TV from Oct. 4.

Promotional posters featuring Henney and co-stars Alex O'Loughlin and Justina Machado have been put up on billboards, buses and metro stations in major cities like Los Angeles and New York.

The medical drama is set in the transplant ward of a Pittsburgh hospital and will air during prime-time at 9 p.m.

Bae Yong-joon’s Travel Essay Becomes a Bestseller

A travel book written by Actor Bae Yong-joon of the “Winter Sonata” fame has gone into its tenth printing in just seven days since it was first marketed. Titled “A Journey to Find the Beauty of Korea,” the travel essay topped the travel book bestseller category in major bookstores. Also the first batch of its Japanese version has all been sold out in Japan and another shipment has been ordered.

The popularity of the book is attributed to not only the banking power of Bae, but also the detailed descriptions and sincerity of his writing. He reportedly traveled all over the country himself to find beautiful traditions and sights of Korea. Bae said that he was motivated to write this travel book when he was asked in a Japanese press conference to introduce a beautiful place in Korea and couldn’t name even one location.

The book’s publisher says that the book features very high quality printing, so it takes twice as long to print. The printing company will be working throughout the Chuseok holiday to meet the deadline. The publishing company also says that the book may be printed in English as well to meet the soaring demands.

So Ji-sub in Tokyo for 1st Japan Drama

A preview for a Japanese drama starring hallyu (Korean wave) star So Ji-sub will take place in Tokyo next week.

The show, "I am GHOST,'' will be featured on BEE TV, a mobile phone broadcaster, starting Oct. 20. The preview will be held at the Tokyo International Forum Hall in Yurakucho, Oct. 13.

So, 32, who plays heroine Mitsuki Tanimura, director Toshiro Sonoda and other staff members will give a full account of the filming process during the preview, according to Yonhap News.

"I am GHOST,'' BEE TV's first action drama, consists of 24 five-minute episodes.

The drama tells the sad love story of a young girl (Mitsuki Tanimura) who contemplates suicide, and a wounded ghost (So Ji-sub).

So Ji-sub debuted as a model for a clothing company in 1995. Two years later, he made his television acting debut in the SBS drama "Model.'' He gained fame in 2004 when the KBS drama "Sorry, I Love You,'' co-starring actress Lim Su-jeong, became a smash hit.

Kim Jun Unveils His New Side

Kim Jun, member of idol group T-Max and one of the F4 in the drama “Boys over Flowers,” is showing off his manly side in a photo exhibition. Kim’s agent said that the dashing actor/singer took part in a photo exhibition titled “The Man” celebrating the publication of the 200th edition of Marie Claire Korea. The event was arranged as a part of the global aid program Join Together Society (JTS) to set up a fund to eradicate poverty for Asian Children. Also posing for the photo show were 46 top Korean stars, including Park Yong-ha, So Ji-seop, Lee Min-ho, and Cha Seung-won.

Kim has been working overtime lately, appearing in various TV variety shows and music programs, and even starring in a musical. His hectic schedule landed him in hospital for throat pain, but he was more than willing to take part in the event and promote the good cause. Kim also plans to participate in an online auction and other events for JTS.

Actress Jeong to Make Hollywood Debut

Former K-pop singer and actress Jeong Ryeo-won is poised to advance to Hollywood.

According to press reports, Jeong, 27, visited the United States last month and met with officials from an unidentified Hollywood studio. She was also courted by Hollywood last year but this is the first time that she has had a meeting in connection with her entry into Hollywood.

A local movie expert praised Jeong, saying, "She is highly qualified to enter the United States for acting.''

An official from Jeong's agency confirmed her Hollywood plan and said, "She will also be active in South Korea.''

Some South Korean actors such as Kim Yun-jin, Lee Byung-hun, Daniel Henney and Jang Dong-gun are now active in Hollywood.

Jeong, a former member of the girl group Chakra, immigrated into Australia during her childhood and returned to South Korea in 1999. She drew attention in 2005 when she made a successful debut as a TV actress in MBC TV's "My Lovely Samsoon.'' She, along with actress Kim Sun-ah, made the soap one of the greatest hit dramas that year.

Bae Yong-jun, Choi Ji-woo Visit Japan

Korean Wave star Bae Yong-jun has visited Japan, where he was welcomed by some 2000 fans. His visit comes more than a year after his last visit to the country.

Bae left for Japan on September 27 on a special Korean Air jet, which was rented for him. The actor arrived at Narita Airport at 3:20 p.m. He and actress Choi Ji-woo will attend a promotional event for the animation version of "Winter Sonata" at the Tokyo Dome.

Bae previously visited Japan in June last year to promote the epic drama "Legend." It is his first visit to Japan alongside actress Choi Ji-woo, who played opposite him in the TV drama "Winter Sonata."

Korean Air offered a special jet for the two stars. Some 2000 fans greeted Bae and Choi at Narita Airport. Bae's fans kept asking him about his health, as the actor was recently diagnosed with septicemia. Bae responded with a smile and waved his hand. Walking among the crowd of fans, he said briefly that he was fine. Bae's agency, BOF, said the two actors didn't pause to greet their fans because of security concerns.

Bae, Choi and Ryu Seung-soo will attend the "Winter Sonata" event on September 29 at the Tokyo Dome. On September 30, Bae will hold an event marking the publishing of his book on the beauty of Korea. He will stay in Japan until October 2.

Lee Junki Launches His “Sawasdee Khrab” Photo Book

Having just performed in Taipei on the 26th, Lee Junki's busy schedule took him westwards towards Bangkok, Thailand, where he attended the launch of his new photo book, Sawasdee Khrab on 27th September.

The launch event was held at Central World, where over 100 journalists and 1,000 fans were awaiting his presence. The event was marked by Lee Junki handing over the 1st issue of his photo book to the Thai government while government officials presented him with a plaque to thank him for raising Thailand's profile in the world.

This photo book was produced to commemorate the 50th year anniversary of the Korea Thailand Communication Centers (KTCC). With the backdrop of the best sights in Thailand, it will show Lee Junki promoting the idea of being able to relax and let loose from his hectic lifestyle. Following the launch in Thailand, Lee Junki will be promoting it from 5th October onwards in Korea, Japan before ending it in China.

Lee Seung-ki Co-hosts a Talk Show

Ballad singer Lee Seung-ki has successfully wrapped up the first taping of the new talk show “Heart of Steel,” which he co-hosts with wrestler-turned-comedian Kang Ho-dong. The new program is more like a talk battle program where 24 guest stars talk about a topic in each of two rounds and the winner of each round advances to the finals, where a final winner is decided.

Lee said that he was so nervous about the taping of the first episode that he couldn’t sleep well the night before. A member of the show’s production team commented that although Kang led the show early, Lee soon found his groove and got along well with his co-host and guest members. The first panel of guests included MC Mong, performance artist Nancy Lang, Epik High, Kim Tae-woo, Seung-ri of Big Bang, K-pop diva Baek Ji-young, veteran actress Kyun Mi-ri and comedian Han Min-kwan, among others.

Bae Yong-joon Dreams of Simple Farming Life

"If I get another job in later life, I would like to be a farmer. It would be nice to plant something, cultivate the fruit and give the healthy product to someone." So said the actor Bae Yong-joon in a press conference held at the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan on Tuesday.

The superstar was promoting a book titled "Travel in Search of Korea's Beauty." He was flanked by twelve experts on Korean traditional culture including ceramics, traditional liquor and pansori, who provided valuable insights for the book.

"I decided to write the book because of an embarrassing moment when I was unable to respond promptly when asked to name great places to visit in Korea at a press conference in Japan," he said. "I felt bad that my fans from abroad spent their entire time watching me shoot films and then went back to their countries. I hope this book can help them understand Korean culture and sentiment."

Bae plans to write more books. "Writing has a unique charm. I would like to write books that introduce places worth visiting in Korea and gourmet restaurants in the future."

Having been hospitalized for five days before being released on Monday, Bae looked thin and pale. "I lost more than 10 kg while writing the book. My stamina dropped considerably, so I had to rest in hospital. I am recovering now so I’ll be healthy again soon," he said.

Bae Yong-jun Hospitalized with Septicemia

It has become belatedly known that star actor Bae Yong-jun has been hospitalized with septicemia.

Bae's agency, BOF, said that the actor collapsed on September 17 because of sudden hypotension and has been hospitalized in southern Seoul. The results of examinations showed that he had the initial stages of septicemia, which was caused by his weakened immune system as a result of fatigue and stress.

"Bae Yong-jun dedicated great effort to writing his book recently. He has lost significant weight over the past year. He has been put on an IV and has no other symptoms," added the agency.

Bae has been busy writing a photo essay book about Korea. He has lost more than 10 kg. An event marking the publishing of his book is slated for September 22 at the National Museum of Korea. On September 29 and 30 he is to attend a promotional event for the animation version of "Winter Sonata" in Tokyo, Japan.

Bae's agency said the actor had been exhausted as he had repeatedly stayed up until late at night to finish his book, and had become very sensitive because of many upcoming important events in Korea and Japan, but he would hopefully be discharged from the hospital before the event marking the publishing of his book.

Girlgroups KARA and f(x) are close friends

It has been known that girlgroups KARA and f(x) members are close friends.

With similar age range amongst members and also promoting in the same time period, the 2 groups have become closer in terms of their relationship. The 2 groups have even danced to each other’s choreography on a music programmes recently.

And on 18th September, which was the day of f(x) member Amber’s birthday, the 2 groups have held a birthday party together in the waiting room for KBS Music Bank.

It was known that KARA member Nicole is very close to Amber. Both of them can relate to each other better as they were both from LA America. They had even lived in the same neighbourhood in LA before. And for Amber who is still learning to improve on her Korean language gets pointers in learning the language directly from Nicole.

Goo Hara and Luna have also shown great friendship. Goo Hara said, “We got closer to each other since we are using the one waiting room. Because we are pretty similar in terms of age, it was easier to communicate as well. And we became good friends.” Luna also said, “KARA unnies are really good to us. They took care of us like real sisters and gave us many advices too.”

And the interactions between the youngest members from the 2 groups are more active. Especially since Kang JiYoung was the maknae (youngest) girlgroup members amongst members from all girlgroups, she recently found 2 new friends – f(x) Krystal and Sulli – they played and chatted a lot.

Kang Ji Young said, “It is weird but there are many times we end up sharing a waiting room with f(x). And we grew closer to one another at a very strange and fast speed. It can be a little boring to have no maknae friends, but now I’m very happy.”
