Wow, it's been a while since I had anything new to post here. Been busy with the anime blog and other projects. But then I had someone on Twitter say they wanted to know what the Cheer Boys were singing about in their ending theme, and I was like "Ehhh, its' a slow day, I've got some free time."

It's a little rough, but it gets the point across. I am forever an amateur so corrections are, as always, very welcome.

Suzaku Ibun: Final Chapter - Chichiri Edition: Book and Real World Endings

Ni-hao, minna-san!

I had enough time this week that I was able to get both the Chichiri endings cleaned up, so I'm giving you a double-post and including them both here. And thus we come at last to the end of my finale, original translation arcs! Man, I feel like I should have some confetti to throw or something. Guess this bag of rice will have to do. Banzai!

I'll talk a bit at the end of this post about the future of Ibun, this blog, and the rest of my many projects, but let's just focus on lovely dialog that makes us feel all the feelings for right now.

Oh, and speaking of feelings… I’m flipping the order of the endings this time, because I want to end on Chichiri's Book World Ending, because it is perfect. PERFECT.

Onwards to fluff bunnies!

==Scene: Bedchamber, at night==

Two weeks had passed since the battle.

About half the Konan soldiers remained to rebuild the villages and cities that had been raided by Kutou.

The battle was over, and everyone was beginning to walk their respective paths.

Time kept on flowing forward.

For all my friends, and... for me, too...

There was still one thing I had to decide.

I couldn’t ask Chichiri to come with me. Time passed with me stuck like that, until—

Chichiri: Good evening, no da.

You: ...Oh... Chichiri...

Chichiri: You called me out here. What’s up no da?

You: I thought we could talk one last time.

Chichiri: One last time?

You: Yeah... ‘Cause I’m heading out tomorrow, y’know.

Chichiri: I don’t understand.

Chichiri: Why? I mean, why did you only ask me to come?

You: Well... I… um...

You: Because I... like you...

Chichiri: But even so... you still have to leave no da?

You: Well...

Chichiri: In other words... you’re saying the ties that bind us together are this weak no da?

…..

You: ...You don’t have to be... so mean about it...

And here I’d hoped... we could end with a smile and a “goodbye.”

Chichiri: I’m not being mean no da.

Chichiri: It’s just that you don’t trust me no da.

You: What...?

Chichiri slowly took off his mask...

Chichiri: Why don’t you... have any faith in my feelings for you?

Chichiri: I’ve sworn to you time and again, haven’t I? That I exist for you no da.

You: ...Chichiri.

Chichiri: Haven’t you been willing time and again to give your life for your closest friend no da?

Chichiri: So the least I can do is be willing to throw away my world for you no da.

Chichiri: So please… for my sake, couldn’t you find it in your heart to allow me to accompany you?

Chichiri: Then tomorrow will certainly be a day to remember no da.

You: How so...?

Chichiri: It’s the day the two of us will vow to be together forever…

You: ...Huh...? Well,okay, but...

You: We... we’re flying...!

Chichiri: Suzaku’s influence has gotten stronger recently—that’s why I can do this no da.

Chichiri: Look no da.

Chichiri: Each of these lights is a life that you protected.

You: ...It wasn’t just me, y’know. It was all of us...

Chichiri: ...Da. All of us no da.

You: ...Say, Chichiri.

Chichiri: Da?

You: Thank you...

You: For falling in love with me.

Chichiri: ...I should be the one saying that no da.

Chichiri: Thank you... for falling in love with me.

With my second wish, I returned Misaki-chan and I to our world—

I used my final wish so that Chichiri and I could be together in my world—

And a few years after I came home, we were reunited.

You: ...Y-you’re exaggerating...

I took Chichiri, who was immersing himself in Japanese culture, with me to go see the fireworks.

Chichiri: Oo...! Ahh…! No da!!

You: You don’t need the “no da,” y’know...

I know this is dumb, but it annoys me that he got "reincarnated" without the scar.
Also, they drew him with these really thick, broad features, and it looks weird, and I don't like it.
...Pretty fireworks, though.

With the lights from the fireworks dappling Chichiri’s face, I thought that somehow, even more than usual—

Chichiri: ...You look even prettier than usual today no da.

…..

You: ...Mm. Thanks...

On that summer night—

The fireworks we saw, as a couple, were so much more beautiful than any of the ones I’d seen before.

Translation Notes(ish):

Normally I’m really pleased with the writing in this game, but I’m sorry, there’s no damn way Chichiri refers to someone as “my princess (ware ga hime).” Blegh. That’s some cheesy Hotohori nonsense, right there. That said, the whole “thank you for falling in love with me” stuff is pretty damn adorable, though (and just about the only time I've ever translated suki as "love," since it made so much sense in context this time).

...Oh, right, I actually did have a translation note, here: During the Real World scene, Chichiri actually says “beautiful” in English, which, coupled with his blonde hair, suggests he got reincarnated in an English-speaking nation. I approve of this canon. Granted, there wasn’t really any way to get this across in my translation, but hopefully you heard it and made note of it while playing.

You: ...Wow. Senjutsu can do that, too?

Chichiri: The power of love can no da.

You: Eh... Th-the power of love!?

Chichiri: Just kidding no da.

Chichiri: But... I do understand exactly how you feel no da.

You: How?

Chichiri: Haven’t I been with you this whole time?

Chichiri: I know everything you’re thinking no da.

You: But—

Chichiri: Here, we’ll test it out.

Chichiri: You can only answer “yes” or “no” from now on, no da.

You: O-okay.

Chichiri: You made up your mind about something serious today.

You: ...Yes.

Chichiri: And that decision concerns me.

You: ...Yes.

Chichiri:But this choice means that you’re going to lose quite a lot, too.

You: ...Yes.

Family, school, friends—a lot of words came to mind.

Chichiri: You’re still not sure you’ve made the right choice.

I stared straight at Chichiri.

You: Say, Chichiri... do you not want me to stay with you?

Chichiri: No, no da.

You: Do you... love me?

Chichiri: ...Yes.

Chichiri: You’ve really grown into a fine young woman no da.

Chichiri softly took my hands in his.

Chichiri’s hands gripped in mine were warm and reassuring.

Finally, I wished for Chichiri and I to be together in this world.

Chichiri and I started traveling the world together.

And, on the anniversary of the day I’d first arrived in this world...

You: Say... Chichiri. Where the heck are we going?

Chichiri: It’s a secret no da.

You: B-but...

Chichiri: It’s top secret. You know that no da. ♪

Chichiri: Okay... We’re here no da.

As Chichiri spoke, a gentle breeze blew past me.

Never let it be said that this game doesn't have gorgeous artwork, because *gasps*

You: Wow...

It took my breath away. I was at a total loss for words.

Chichiri: You chose to protect this world. So I wanted to show you someplace beautiful within that world no da.

Countless cotton balls drifted about in the wind, climbing towards the blue sky.

Chichiri: I hope you’ll remember this, [Your Name] no da.

Chichiri: If you ever regret staying in this world, I hope you’ll remember this scene.

Chichiri: There may not be any perfect answers in this world, but—

Chichiri: When people truly and seriously think about their decisions, then there are no perfect mistakes, either.

Chichiri: There are sure to be plenty of beautiful and precious things in this world. Just like this view here... no da.

You: ...Mm. I’ve known that for a long time now.

Chichiri: Da?

You: Like whenever you look at me and give me a smile.

You: As long as I have that, then I’m sure I won’t have any regrets.

Chichiri: ...Da.

Within the swirl of cotton drifting slowly towards the sky, like snow falling in reverse, the two of us embraced.

It really is a beautiful world.

After Chichiri and I had set off on our trip together, I’d thought that everyday—

And sure enough, right at that moment, that was exactly how I felt.

Commentary

This ending kills me every time. No, seriously. I just drowned in fluff bunnies. There is nothing that remains of me but a puddle of feels. (By the way, everyone reading this knows that Chichiri is my favorite character Of All Time In Any Medium, right?)

Admittedly one of the reasons I adore this ending is because it eerily and gorgeously echoes some of my old fanfiction (particularly that yes/no exchange), and it’s always super gratifying to realize that your understanding of a character was similar to an actual official writer of said character… but even taking that away, it’s just excellent writing, highlighting Chichiri’s own past trauma as well as the heroine’s strength that's been developing over the course of the game. Good stuff. I’m very glad we get to end on that note (for now, anyway).

So What’s Next?

A break, of sorts. Despite our lack of actual postings (technical difficulties abound on the cleaning/typesetting side of things), RolyBear IS still working on those Chihayafuru chapters, so I’m going to focus my attention on editing those for the time being. I’ve also got my hands full over at Josei Next Door, and there are some writing projects I’ve been neglecting in favor of this translation. So, I’m going to turn my attention toward those for a bit. If I do have some spare time I’ll work on that “clean up” of Ibun I’ve been promising for a while now, converting the translations to easily navigable PDF files, but that will be the extent of my work on Ibun for the next couple months.

That said, I will be back with more Ibun, although I haven’t decided if I want to go through the process of translating another character’s route yet or not. But I will be posting the “Suzaku Summoning Arc,” if nothing else, and if I opt to move away from Ibun for a while, then no doubt I’ll fill this blog with some other translation project instead (there are a few LNs I’ve been eyeballing, actually). But for now I’ll doff my kasa and thank you all for traveling with me, and sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed the thrills, feels, and occasional snarky commentary of these translations. I've really appreciated your support, and I hope to hear from you again on JND or in the comments of another translation project someday.

Suzaku Ibun: Final Chapter - Tasuki Edition: Real World Ending

Wrapping up the Tasuki Arc this week with some RL shenanigans, and then it's on to the adorable Chichiri finales next week! We'll discuss future translation plans after that. For now, though, let's just enjoy bandits in Tokyo.

That was the night I decided to go back to my own world.

Tasuki and I left the city together.

Tasuki: ...Why’d ya bring me out here?

You: Well... There’s something I needed to talk to you about.

Tasuki: What’s up?

You: Mm...

You: …You... probably know how much I like you...

Tasuki: Y...yeah. Guess I do.

You: ...Then if at all possible...

You: ...If it’s okay with you...

I took a little breath.

You: ...Could you come back to my world with me?

Tasuki: Wh-what?

You: ...I don’t mean to say that it’s physically impossible...

You: You can, but...

Tasuki: ...Sorry. There’s no way… I could be ready fer somethin’ like that.

Tasuki: I didn’t know... ya thought-a me like that.

You: ...Tasuki?

Tasuki: ...I’m sorry, I really am! Wait fer me fer a little.

With that, he moved out ahead of me—

And before long... I couldn’t see him at all.

A few days later—

Misaki-chan and I were getting ready to leave, but Tasuki was still nowhere to be found.

==Scene: Throne Room==

Tamahome: ...That jerk never showed up...

Hotohori: I’m sorry. I ordered my soldiers to search the city for him, but...

You: No. It’s okay.

I’m sure he was just disgusted with me because of how selfish I’d been.

I knew this might happen. I’d basically told him to throw away his own world for me.

You: Having you guys here to see me off is plenty.

You: I just hope Tasuki’s doing well, wherever he is.

Misaki: ...Should we wait a little longer?

You: No. It’s fine, really.

I still have plenty of good memories with Tasuki. That’s enough for me.

You: ...Kai... ji...

My lip was trembling a little.

Memories with Tasuki came to mind one by one and then disappeared.

Leaving like this... really did make me miss him.

You: ...I miss you.. Tasuki...

My dripping tears fell to the floor.

Tamahome: ...What the hell, Tasuki? A Celestial Warrior makin’ his priestess cry like that.

???: ———!!

You: Did you... just... hear something?

Konan Soldier: W-we’ve got trouble, sir. There’s a shady character on the grounds!

You: A shady character...?

Konan Soldier: He’s coming right this way, sir!

Hotohori: ...How distasteful. That “suspicious character” is one of our nation’s heroes.

Konan Soldier: Sir...?

Chichiri: ...I thought it might turn out like this no da.

Mitsukake: Oh, for heaven’s sake.

Tasuki: Wait, wait, wait, wait!!

Tasuki: What—the hell’re ya—doin’!?

You: Tasuki...

Tasuki: Startin’ the ceremony whenever it suits ya—an’ without the leadin’ man, too!

You: We... well, I mean... you’d... run off, Tasuki.

Tasuki: Dumbass! I told ya ta wait, didn’t I!?

You: ...Then where...?

Tasuki: I just had ta tell the boys on Reikaku goodbye, is all.

You: What…? So when you said you weren’t ready…?

You: That’s what you meant!?

Tasuki: ‘Course it was!!

Tasuki: As a matter-a principle, I take everythin’ I want!

Tasuki: So if there’s somethin’ I want in another world, then I’m sure as hell goin’ there, too!

Chichiri: ...You’ll be reincarnated in another world, Tasuki.

Chichiri: I have a feeling the two of you won’t stay together when you cross over no da.

Tasuki: Eh!? Ya think!?

Tasuki: ...W-well fine! Then I’ll find you! Count on it!

You: ...Geez...

You: That’s so like you... Tasuki...

I was laughing and crying all at once.

You: You’re really okay with this?

Tasuki: ‘Course I am!

You: ...Thank you, Tasuki.

You: …We’re off!

Tamahome: Good luck, kid.

Tamahome: Look after Tasuki for us.

Tasuki: Hey, now! It’s the other way around!

You: Will do!

Tasuki: Don’t you jump on board!

Tasuki: We’ve already been on the same one 18 times.

You: No biggie. It’s fun no matter how many times we ride it, y’know.

Tasuki: I’m gonna be sick!

Tasuki: Can’t we do somethin’ a little gentler…?

Tasuki: See, like that one! The teacup ride! That looks nice!

You: Ooh, good call... I love a good thrill ride.

Tasuki: Wha...? Thrill ride?

You: Yeah! Today I’m gonna spin it even more than I usually do!

Tasuki: Wai... I didn’t...

You: C’mon, Tasuki!

Tasuki: W-wait, wait, wait, wait!!

Tasuki: AHHH...!!

The amusement part where Tasuki took me was a lot of fun. After that, we rode a bunch of roller coasters.

Looking up, I thought it was the perfect day for a date.

I had a great time until Tasuki, exhausted, dragged me away.

Tasuki’s leaving me—

You: ...I guess he doesn’t like me...

Chichiri: You don’t need to worry about that no da. I’m sure that isn’t it.

Chichiri: Tasuki really cared about you.

You: Then... why?

Chichiri: You should ask him that no da.

You: ...Um.

You: I wonder if I could still catch him.

Chichiri: If you want, I’m always happy to lend a hand no da.

I didn’t hesitate. I got the feeling that, if I didn’t go to him now, then we’d never be able to meet again.

As soon as I took Chichiri’s hand—

I was in a place I’d never seen before.

You: ...Thanks. Chichiri...

*footsteps*

—When I turned around to face the footsteps, I saw—

Tasuki: ...What’re... you...?

You: ...Chichiri brought me here.

Tasuki: ...How were ya plannin’ ta get back?

You: I’d have you... come with me.

Tasuki: Ya think… ya can just waltz up to me an’...

You: If not, then I’ll go with you.

Tasuki: Huh!? To become a bandit?!

You: …It’s got nothing to do with that...

You: Why... did you try to leave me behind?

Tasuki: ...It’s got... nothin’ t’do with you.

You: It does...

You: Why... did you try to leave?

Tasuki: ...Dummy. Yer goin’ back ta yer world tomorrow.

Tasuki: If you told me to, I’d give up my own world fer ya.

I was sort of curious, but there was no way for me to know for sure.

But... after the story of the Priestess of Suzaku ended, my own life went on.

You: What did the chief of Hakko Village say he needed?

Tasuki: Looks like there’s a nasty gang-a thieves that’ve settled inta the neighborhood an’ are causin’ trouble.

Tasuki: That’s Tamahome’s hometown. We’ll make mincemeat outta those thieves.

You: Tasuki? Accept just a tiny bit of the treasure those thieves stole, okay?

Tasuki: Sure, I gotcha. An’ we return the rest to its owners, yeah?

Tasuki: I’d do anything ta make sure th’ bandit family business can hold its head high. (1)

You: ‘Kay. I’m glad you understand.

Bandit: Boss Man! Boss Lady of Suzaku!! Everyone’s all ready t’go!! (2)

You: Be right there.

We got ready to go and headed out of the cave—

The Boss Lady of Suzaku rides to battle!

Tasuki: Thanks fer waitin’, gang!

Tasuki: Our enemies have got skill this time! Ya’ll better be fired up!!

Tasuki: Anyhow, we got Suzaku’s divine protection on our side!

Tasuki: As long as this gal loves me, I’m invincible!

Tasuki: And that means the bandits-a Mount Reikaku are indestructible, too!

You: ...T-Tasuki. You embarrass me every time you do that.

Tasuki: Don’t be. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with tellin’ the truth.

Tasuki squeezed me tightly to his side.

Tasuki: You say somethin’, too.

You: Mm, right.

You: Guys! Get out there, win, and take back that treasure!

You: Let’s raise hell until morning again!!

(1) Tasuki uses the expression 大手を振る (oote wo furu), which literally refers to swinging your arms wide, but has the meaning of being brazen or bold. The whole sentence translated awkwardly so I took a stab at an English expression that was both a body movement and an emotion of boldness or pride, but I feel like the connotation is pretty different. I’m open to alternate translations.

(2) “Boss Lady of Suzaku” - Original Japanese was “Suzaku no Ane-san,” where “ane-san” is usually what you’d call a yakuza boss’s wife. I had fun translating that.

The holidays are a mad time, and I was churning out a bunch of series/year-end posts over at The Josei Next Door, so translating kinda got put on the backburner. But I had a long weekend thanks to New Year's, and it's given me the time I needed to give you a Super-Mega-Giant portion of Ibun to make up for lost time! Chichiri: Hnn. I know I sensed Nakago’s ki here no da.

You: But then... where...?

Nakago: You’re here.

You: Nakago...

Nakago: I came to welcome you, Priestess of Suzaku.

No... this is all wrong.

Tasuki: Oh... so it’s a trap, huh...?

Nakago: You thought I couldn’t predict your plan of attack?

Nakago: You’d never be able fight against such a large number of opponents if you were nothing but ordinary humans.

Tamahome: ...Tch.

Chichiri: He... was one step ahead us no da.

You: ...Where’s Misaki-chan?

Nakago: Misaki-sama. Come here.

Misaki: ...Yes... sir.

You: Misaki-chan!?

Nakago: The summoning ceremony is, by its nature, performed so the priestess can join with the god.

Nakago: Her body carries a massive amount of power from her god. Every time she uses a wish, that power eats away at the priestess.

Nakago: When the god grants her final wish, he will then devour her, body and soul, and she will die.

You: But how could he... do something so cruel…?

Nakago: So what happens now? Will you do everything in your power to stop us?

You: ...Misaki-chan...

You: Misaki-chan…

My feet started to move on their own.

Tamahome: H-hey! Wait!

Nakago: Don’t move.

You: Guys... stay where you are.

Tasuki: Wh-what’re you sayin’?

You: This... is something that I have to do.

Kutou Soldier: Yes, sir!

You: Suzaku... please lend me your strength.

I had to stop this chain of hatred.

You: Please. Suzaku... give me your...

Konan Soldier: That’s... Suzaku... The god who protects... our nation...

Konan Soldier: We’ve won... The battle is ours!!

Konan Soldier 1: ...What’re you saying...? We fought so hard to gain the upper hand.

Konan Soldier 2: These people tried to tear our nation apart...

Konan Soldier 1: I had friends who were killed, and yet you...

Konan Soldier 3: Just how much of our comrades’ blood to you think they spilled!?

Konan Soldier 1: War is about killing people. There’s nothing kind about it!

I knew that what I was saying was nothing but idealism.

You: But still, this hatred has got to stop somewhere.

You: Someone has to be the first to forgive.

I must have failed. But as soon as I thought that—

The noise spread... It started to sound like it was coming from both armies.

The war is... over...

My head was tangled in knots, thinking about all the things that’d happened so far.

I was completely overwhelmed...

Translation Notes:

Suzaku refers to himself as “Suzaku Seikun (星君),” where sei means “star” and kun is the same character used in Taiitsukun to mean “monarch” or “ruler.” I translated this as “the sovereign star Suzaku.” Note that he’s actually listed as “Suzaku Seikun” in the script as well, but for simplicity’s sake I opted to just label him as “Suzaku.”
“None of us could have been involved in it.” -And Chichiri is usually so easy to understand, too. Original Japanese: おいらたちが、ここまで辿り着くことも出来なかった。 (oira-tachi ga, kokomade tadoritsuku koto mo dekinakatta). Literally “And we couldn’t have managed to reach that far” - I think. Both kokomade and tadoritsuku are...annoying me. Anyway, as always, I’m open to suggestions.
“Call me whatever ya want, this is what I’ve worked out.” -Another problem line. Original Japanese: 山賊だろうがなんだろうが、筋を通す (sanzoku darou ga nandarou ga, suji wo toosu). This uses an expression (“suji wo toosu”) which I’m having a hard time translating. Literally something like: “Whether I’m a bandit or a whatever, I proceeded in a logical manner,” which is awkward as heck, so I played with it. I think it's basically accurate, but I’m uncertain enough that I'm leaving it here for corrections.

And a few stray thoughts for the end of the arc…

I feel the worst for that poor Kutou soldier who got ordered to cut down an unarmed teeager. I hope he made it out alive. And with a good therapist, too.
Fun Fact: “Kai jin” literally means “Open God.” This makes me giggle.
I love how in the last piece I posted, our heroine thinks Soi killed all those Konan soldiers and it’s an absolute atrocity, but Tasuki sets a bunch of people on fire on a regular basis and we’re all “Go get ‘em, Genrou!”
Nakago’s backstory never really worked for me in FY and it doesn’t really work for me now. Maybe if we’d known some of those details in the early going it would have colored my perceptions of him, but by the time we get to this point he’s proven himself to be such a rat bastard that it’s hard to suddenly feel sympathy for him. Mostly I just kept demanding the heroine go: “Hey Suzaku, kai jin, and I wish for Nakago to be dead.”
That said, I love the way our heroine handles the end of the war. It’s a great response to Nakago’s challenge and an awesomely responsible use of godly power.
Chichiri’s “you can cry now” scene gives me the mega-feels every time.
So I didn’t notice this when I did the rough translations, but I’m pretty damn sure that Tasuki says Nakago survived and ran off together with Soi (the Japanese says Nakago mo, Soi to issho ni, which suggests he’s moving himself and it’s not just Soi taking his body away to be buried). So, uh… we just let them go? Seiryuu power or no, this seems very, very stupid.

We’re so close to the end, you guys! Just the final chapter, where we wrap up any romantic threads and see if we get a Happily Ever After! I’ll have at least a part of it up next week, so look forward to it!

Suzaku Ibun: Seiryuu Summoning Arc - The Kutou War, Pt. 3 (Or, "Thunder, Thunder... Thunderspat!")

Ahoy and welcome back to another week of War of the Warriors! Seiryuu guest appearances abound yet again, as a surprise visitor comes calling - and with an even more surprising request, to boot. Hit that jump to see what happens to our plucky young priestess next!

The battle continued.

All the Celestial Warriors were off fighting, so I was left alone.

The sounds of battle from the front lines reached me from far away.

I stood, sword in hand, awaiting the arrival of the Sairou Army and the return of my warriors.

My job was to plunge into the center of the enemy army along with my warriors and persuade the Priestess of Seiryuu—Misaki-chan—to join us.

Until then, all I could do was wait.

Konan Soldier 1: Th-this is bad! They’ve broken through the front line!

Konan Soldier 1: The Kutou Army will be here before we know it.

Konan Soldier 2: Mm... I see... Then we should prepare ourselves for the worst.

Konan Soldier 1: ...Yes, sir.

As soon as they’d finished their exchange—

*thunder crash*

—!

The sky roared and filled with light. And then—

...Silence.

You: ...It got quiet all of a sudden...

You: ...I’d better go check it out...

You: Misaki-chan...

Nakago: ...Misaki-sama, is this someone you know?

Literally, I think, it’s something like: “Well although, it ended with that faith being used by me, too.” It's kinda vague and the ~te owaru is tripping me up a little. Ni-hao and howdy, dear readers! In my last post I warned you that I might have to disappear for a couple months, and I was rather true to be my word, there. But I'm back now and ready to throw us into the Great Seishi War. But no war can begin without a heartfelt confession from your loved one, so let's start with that!

I have the "nighttime visit" for both Chichiri and Tasuki, but I'm still trying to work Ibun translatons back into my weekly schedule, so we're going to start up with a small piece this time and just handle the Chichiri scene. I'll do Tasuki next week (that's what she said!) and then hopefully be able to provide a good-sized chunk of Epic Battle Action after that.

We readied ourselves for tomorrow’s battle, then retired to our rooms early.

But... I just couldn’t get to sleep.

I’d been useless from start to finish...

You: What...?

Chichiri: I didn’t realize how strong you were.

Chichiri: Then let’s walk this path together.

After Chichiri went back to his room, I sat up thinking by myself.

I'd still been afraid of tomorrow.

But I’d answered him right away.

Suzaku Ibun: Seiryuu Summoning Arc - The Konan Palace (Or, "O Koutei My Koutei")

Hey gang! I got some “Ibun” for ya. But first, an explanation: We’re entering Part 3 now, which has two versions: The “Suzaku Summoning Arc” and the “Seiryuu Summoning Arc.” You go to the Suzaku Arc if you return to the palace with the Shinzaho; you go to the Seiryuu Arc if you lost the two Shinzaho.

Now I have only actually played through the Seiryuu Arc, so that’s what you’ll be getting for the next several posts. At some point I’d like to go back and play the Suzaku Arc, but my focus right now is on getting a complete arc posted, so we’ll just focus on Seiryuu for now.

A second point to mention: I’m working on a second, time-sensitive translation project, so while I will do my best to continue to deliver “Ibun” snippets to y’all, don’t be surprised if Sunday rolls around and there’s no update. I don’t have a ton of free time, so “Ibun” may end up having to go on the backburner for the next month or so. I haven’t deserted it, though, I promise!

You: ...You were plenty surprised too, Tamahome.

Once we’d arrived in Eiyou, it wasn’t long before we were granted an audience with the emperor.

The room was emptied of people, leaving just our group.

You: ...It’s been a long time since we last saw Hotohori.

Chichiri: It sounds like Hotohori-sama’s been swamped as well no da.

Chichiri: From what I heard, he cleverly fended off the Kutou Empire’s unreasonable demands and managed to delay the start of the war.

You: Oh... Hotohori’s been fighting his own battles too, huh?

Chichiri: Da. ♪

???: Thank you for your hard work, everyone.

That voice...

Oh joy, I get to translate your weirdass dialogue again. -_-

You: Hotohori!

Hotohori: You’re back.

You: Yes... we have returned.

Hotohori: ...I almost didn’t recognize you, Priestess of Suzaku.

Hotohori: You’ve returned safely from your odyssey.

Hotohori: As representative of the entire Konan Empire, I, Saihitei, offer you my thanks.

You: Thank you very much.

Hotohori: I’m truly grateful that you’re safe. I’m glad that we were able to meet again, [Your Name].

You: ...Yeah, me too.

Hotohori: It seems you went through a great deal.

Hotohori: It is likely that Kutou is preparing to march on Our borders.

Hotohori: They plan to begin with Konan, and then go on to rule all of the four great empires.

Hotohori: The Kutou Emperor thinks that, if the land of the four gods is under his control, then he will monopolize the power of the four gods as well.

Unable to contain their anxiety, the people’s voices spilled out, filling the chamber.

When Hotohori tried to raise his voice again—

You: Th-that sound! What is it?!

Chichiri: ...Seiryuu’s being summoned no da!

Hotohori: Indeed... We daresay they are in the act of stripping us of our power.

Hotohori: A girl we dragged into our battles, at our convenience. Nothing more than that!

Hotohori: And yet this girl should bear all the responsibility upon her shoulders!? Have you no pride!?

Hotohori: Until today, you have all worked hard for Us, for a moment such as this.

Hotohori: The Sairou Empire thinks it in their national interest and has promised to fight alongside us.

Hotohori: In order to protect our world, we shall take up the sword. That is the issue here.

You: ...Hotohori...

Konan Soldier: A report! A report for your Highness!

Hotohori: What is it?

Konan Soldier: Kutou has begun the invasion!

Konan Soldier: Currently, the First Imperial Army is engaging them at the Konan-Kutou border, but—

Konan Soldier: The enemy outnumbers us three-to-one.

Konan Soldier: I fear they may have already penetrated our border...

Hotohori: ...I see...

Hotohori: We appreciate your work in bringing Us this report. You should retire for now.

Konan Soldier: Yes, Majesty!

Hotohori: ...It has begun at last.

You: This is all my fault...

Tamahome: ...Now’s not the time for regrets.

Tasuki: Damn straight. It ain’t like you ta give up without a fight.

Nuriko: We’re going to show you what a dramatic comeback looks like.

Hotohori: Right. It’s still too early to give up.

Hotohori: Everyone, listen well!

Hotohori: We must turn the bulk of our forces to the Konan border.

Hotohori: After we have merged with the Sairou Army, which is heading this way, then we shall engage the Kutou Army in a decisive battle.

Civil Servant 1: That’s absurd... Without the divine protection of our god, what chance do we have...?

Hotohori: The enemy outnumbers us three-to-one. Even after we join up with the Sairou Army, We do not expect to have the numbers great enough to achieve victory.

Hotohori: However, we have one thing which they do not.

Hotohori: Our enemy’s sword is a stolen one. A sword controlled by nothing but desire is a brittle, weak weapon.

At Hotohori’s words, the atmosphere in the room began to change.

You: Hotohori! I’m coming, too.

Hotohori: But of course. You are a symbol of the nation.

Hotohori: It will raise everyone’s morale if you come along.

You: ...Thank you.

Within the bustling hall, we all nodded at each other.

There wasn’t a single person in that room who felt despair.

(1) Man, I’d almost forgotten how much I hate translating for Hotohori. Almost. Anyway, original Japanese: この戦いはそんなものを守るための戦いでは断じてない(kono tatakai ha son’na mono wo mamoru tame no tatakai de ha danjitenai). I may have written this down incorrectly but I haven’t had time to replay this portion of the game to check. My version is loose as hell and I’m honestly not even sure I could give a literal translation - something like: “[I] don’t conclude that this battle is a battle for the sake of protecting those things.” This whole speech was a hassle to translate, to be honest, and I am (as always) happy to hear alternate interpretations.

And the next thing we knew… The area where the Seiryuu were stationed had filled with a fine, smoke-like powder.

Chiriko: We’ll know soon enough if it was truly a waste of time!

Chiriko: Tasuki-san! Now!

Tasuki: You can count on me, Chiriko!

Here comes the BOOM!

The flames came into contact with the powder in the air—

—And caused a huge explosion.

You: Wow… it really did explode…

Suboshi: Misaki-sama’s enemies are our enemies. We’ll join forces to take you down.

Original Japanese: “これには、色んな人が願いを託してる /それを守ってもらった私は、その願い責任を持たなければいけない (kore ni ha, iron’na hito ga negai wo taku-shiteru / sore wo mamottemoratta watashi ha, sono negai ni sekinin wo motanakereba ikenai). Suzaku Ibun: The Harbor, Pt. 2 (Or, "Uncle!")

Hey friends,

I was really hoping to get the entire Rumble at the Docks done in one post, but there are three major "timelines" here and, between work and life and other blog posts, I just didn't have time to get it all cleaned up in a week. So for today, I'm just going to show you what happens if you give the Shinzaho to Misaki. Hopefully next week I'll be able to post both major versions of the actual fight, and we'll be all ready to officially end Part Two and move into the last (and much shorter) Part Three. Huzzah for forward momentum!

Suzaku Ibun: The Harbor, Pt. 1 (Or, "Sparrin' at the Dock of the Bay")

Ni-hao and I'm back from my trip with some more Ibun for y'all! It's a fairly small slice since I'm also working on proofreading a new Chihayafuru chapter for RolyBear (get excited!), but it's also accompanied by some walkthrough notes, so that should pad the post a bit, too. And so:

Walkthrough Notes!

First, once you find the second Shinzaho (whether it's the Byakko or Genbu one), the game automatically sends you away from the Hokkan/Sairou world maps on on to the next arc. So before you enter either Mount Black or the Daijiin, make sure you've visited all the other places you wanted to visit.

Second, the game will send you to a different point in the game depending on how your Shinzaho-gathering adventures went:

If you have both Shinzaho, you go to Part 3: Suzaku Summoning Arc.
If you have neither Shinzaho (i.e., Ashitara and Misaki stole them both from you), then you go to Part 3: Seiryuu Summoning Arc.
If you have one Shinzaho but not the other, then you go to the last bit of Part 2, which I'm calling The Harbor Arc. This is the Arc I'll be translating for the next couple weeks.

Third (and somewhat obnoxiously), I'm not sure if the Harbor Arc is Part, 2 Chapter 3 or Part 2, Chapter 4. It popped up differently in my two run-throughs, so... *sweat* Not sure what that's all about. I've decided to call it "Chapter 4," since it makes the most sense to me to divide Part 2 up into four pieces (Shipwreck, Hokkan, Sairou, and Harbor).

And, fourth and finally, there are a lot of variations to this arc depending on who's still alive at this point (Amiboshi, Nuriko, Chiriko, Tomo). I'll do my best to cover as many versions as possible, but there are a lot of combinations that may or may not result in dialogue differences, so if you notice a line when you're playing that is NOT in my script, please let me know.

And now that we've gotten all that out of the way, let's get into it!

Tamahome: We’re finally home...

You: Mm... we are.

Tasuki: Man... it feels like we’ve been out roamin’ fer about forever.

You: …We only have one… of the Shinzaho.

Mitsukake: But the Seiryuu warriors are in the same boat. I honestly can’t imagine what will happen next.

Chiriko: Oh... that may be right.

You: Got a prediction for us, Chiriko?

Chiriko: If I were one of the Seiryuu Warriors… as things stand, I wouldn't return to my unstable homeland.

Chiriko: I'd strike as soon as my enemies had let down their guard.

You: There’s no way they’d—

Chichiri: Wait, no da... That’s odd.

You: What’s wrong?

Chichiri: There's no one around no da. But even so, it’s painfully obvious that we’re being watched no da.

You: ...Now that you mention it, I do feel kind of unsettled.

???: You have keen instincts.

{Nakago appears}

Nakago: It seems you lot have matured on your journey.

You: Na...Nakago...!

Nakago: However, it’s too late for you to escape.

A bunch of soldiers surrounded us. I wondered where the heck they’d hidden so many of them.

Tamahome: Kutou soldiers...

You: And there’s a ton of them... They’ve got us surrounded.

Chiriko: So it’s an ambush, then.

Chiriko: There’s at least 100 soldiers.

Chiriko: If they attack us all at once... we’ll be in trouble.

Nakago: Bows at the ready.

Kutou Solider: Bows at the ready—!!

The soldiers raised their bows in a single motion.

There really wasn’t anywhere to run.

What... can we possibly...!!

Another big chunk of Ibun today as we at last gallop towards the end of Part 2, Chapter 2! I won't be posting any translations next week since I'll be on holiday, so I figured I'd wrap up the Daijiin Arc this week and give everyone a moment to catch their breaths before we move on to the next big plot point.

Tatara-san died.

Despite all of that, the sky was bright and calm and beautiful.

Obviously, after everything, I was really hurting—

And the next thing knew, I’d started sobbing.

The others didn’t say anything. They just stood by quietly, waiting for me to cry myself out.

Translation Notes:

(1) “For now, you can focus on pushing the two of us onwards no da.” Original Japanese:　今は、二人を押すことに専念するのだ (ima ha, futari wo osu koto ni sen’nen suru no da). Bit of a headscratcher - the “osu” and the “futari” are a bit vague. My initial thought was the futari referred to Misaki and Tatara, but in context I think it makes more sense for him to be referring to himself and the other seishi you chose. I’m leaving it here so someone can correct me if I’m way off base.

(2) “Just one more way you could tell how much they loved each other.” Original Japanese: これもきっと絆の形のひとつ (kore mo kitto kizuna no kata no hitotsu). Literally, “This was also, surely, one shape of their bond.” Vague Japanese is vague! I did some contextual guesswork and buffed it up so it would (a) make sense and (b) sound natural in English. I’m open to suggestions if it seems too broad.

(3) “In a battle of wills” - Literally “if it’s feelings alone” (kimochi dake nara), but it sounded really odd, so I took liberties.

You: ...I’m sure there’s some other way to defeat them. We’ll keep trying.

Tatara: I thought as much. There’s no question you’re the Priestess of Suzaku.

Tatara: Those clothes of yours... they’re not of this world.

Tatara: That is the only reason a priestess from another nation would travel all the way here.

The door opposite the one I’d used swung open.

Misaki: How awful, to hurt you like this… It must have been so painful...

You: Misaki-chan...

—The chains that had bound Tatara-san fell to the floor.

You: The Seiryuu Warriors told me... they were controlling you, but...

Tatara: I’m sure she’s still in that other world now, living happily.

Tatara: She was... the only woman I ever loved.

Misaki: ...Were the two of you together?

Tatara: Yes. Suzuno and I were in love.

Tatara: Everytime I look at that mirror, I remember her clearly. She was a long-haired, serene young woman.

You: ...But even though you were in love, you were torn apart from each other?

Tatara: ...Yes, that’s right.

Misaki: The priestess didn’t ask Byakko to let her stay in this world?

Tatara: She did, but that wish could not be granted.

Tatara: The priestess appears from another world, summons the beast-god, and has her wishes granted. That is the sole reason for her existence.

Tatara: By nature, her existence is incompatible with this world.

Tatara: Once the beast-god has been summoned, she is not allowed to remain here.

If there was just one thing I was determined to do, it was to save my best friend.

Miboshi: *chuckles*... You’re quite perceptive, youngster.

Tasuki: I really don’t give a damn about your backstory.

Mitsukake: Hand over the Shinzaho and release that young woman!

Miboshi: Those are exceedingly one-sided terms. I’m not inclined to accept them.

Miboshi: It won’t be long before I have it myself.

Tamahome: What’s that supposed to mean?

Miboshi: I hope you enjoy playing with my goblins while you’re here.

Miboshi: Now let’s be off, Misaki-sama.

Misaki: ...All right.

(1) “This is ridiculous...” - Japanese: こんなアホなことあるんか (kon’na AHO na koto aru’n ka). I suppose literally this is “There are these kinds of stupid things?” Obviously the literal is too clunky, but I feel like my version is a bit… off, I guess. Anyway, suggestions are welcomed.

...Also, if I told you how long it took me and my friends to decide on the correct term for a group of goblins (it's a "horde," of course), you would laugh at me. Like, a lot. ^^;

Walkthrough Notes: Picking your seishi companions

In the next parts of the game, the two seishi you choose will have different roles to play, and the dialogue changes depending on who you picked first and who you picked second. This leads to all kinds of variations, but I’ll do my best to cover them in the upcoming translations.

One thing to keep in mind for now, though, is Saving Chiriko. You need four “Favorability Points” (FP) to do this. If you’re trying to get just enough points to save him, then the best way to do it is to run to him during the storm on the ship (2 points) and then to choose him here (2 points). HOWEVER, for some reason, you HAVE to make him the first seishi you choose here. If you pick him second, he will still die. Make your selections carefully, friends!

Ni-hao and Happy Summer Festival Weekend! Like proper nerds, my friends and I celebrated both the Fourth of July and Tanabata in glorious fashion, not to mention that Summer Premiere Week just slammed into us, so my past few days have been rather packed. As such, I'm just doing the Daijiin Temple prologue this time around. We'll get into the long, meaty goodness of the Daijiin Arc next week.

On a slightly related note, I finally got around to getting a MyAnimeList account, so feel free to friend me. I'm itsthedee, of course. At Chiriko’s suggestion, we kept our eyes peeled for the Sairou Empire’s most prominent structure, the Daijiin.

Tasuki: Wait, ain’t Tamahome up next?

You: Mm, but I don’t want to be the only person who doesn’t have to stand guard.

Tasuki: Dummy. Then there’d be no one around to stand guard over you.

You: Oh... right... I hadn’t thought about that.

Tasuki: Yer totally defenseless. You could get gobbled right up an’ never know it.

You: Thanks. You’re sweet, Tasuki.

Tasuki: ...S-sure thing.

You: Any changes to report?

Tasuki: ...Nah, nothin’.

Tasuki: You don’t think Chiriko’s instincts are off, do ya?

Chiriko: …This has nothing to do with instinct! It’s conjecture!

Tamahome: Well, y’know. We figured the priestess would be in danger if she was out here all alone with a certain someone.

Chiriko: From what I hear, he’s recently been making some conspicuous remarks that make it sound as if he’s allying himself with the Kutou Empire.

You: ...So it’s possible that he might be helping the Kutou Army search for the Shinzaho...

Chiriko: Yes. That’s exactly right.

You: But where in the world did you learn that...?

Chiriko: When I was in Konan, I met with a scholar who came from Sairou.

Chiriko: The gentleman was terribly anxious about Sairou’s future.

Tasuki: ...Oh, looks like he had good reason t’be worried.

You: Huh...?

Tasuki: Take a look... Kutou soldiers.

You: ...There really are... And they’re not even trying to hide their numbers.

Chiriko: …In this country, the Supreme Patriarch has tremendous authority.

Chiriko: If he’s given them permission to be here, then the Kutou soldiers would have no need to hide their numbers.

Tamahome: We’re on enemy ground, no question.

You: ...We don’t wanna stand out too much then.

Chiriko: …At any rate, we had better hold this conversation again with the others.

You: Mm.

We moved away from the high ground and returned to where the others were resting.

You: Something might be happening at the Daijiin.

You: What do you guys think? Should we try to check it out?

Mitsukake: ...I’m against it. In addition to the Kutou soldiers who are coming and going, there’s a strong possibility that the Seiryuu Celestial Warriors are stationed there as well.

Mitsukake: If we’re not careful, we could collide head-on with them.

Nuriko: Fine by me.

Nuriko: They’re such slowpokes that I’m sure we’d knock ‘em flat. Whatever happens, happens.

You: I’m not sure we should do anything that crazy...

Chiriko: No... there’s no avoiding it.

You: R-really!?

Chiriko: Considering that any battles would likely take place in passages or narrow quarters, there’s little chance they could surround us...

Chiriko: Most importantly, we’re in the Sairou Empire.

Chiriko: Since the Supreme Patriarch has shown favor towards the Kutou Empire, then our enemy won’t keep their full strength confined to the temple.

Chiriko: Given that everyone is extremely strong in individual combat, we’d have to be quite inept for them to take us out easily. (2)

Tasuki: I don’t understand all these particulars. Try summin’ it up.

Chiriko: As things stand, I think we should devise a plan to infiltrate the temple...

Chiriko: This may be our best chance to obtain the Shinzaho.

Tasuki: That’s actually a great, easy-to-follow theory, Chiriko.

Chichiri: Hmm, Chiriko’s assessment isn’t wrong no da. That said, it does make things more dangerous.

Translation Notes:

(1) “Supreme Patriarch” - The Japanese title is 法王 (hou’ou), which my dictionary tells me just means “Pope.” However, “Pope” in English refers specifically to the head of the Catholic Church, and Sairou is most definitely not a Catholic nation. I opted instead for “Supreme Patriarch,” as this is the English term most often used for the Sangharaja, or senior monk appointed as the head of a monastery (or in some cases as the head of the nation’s entire monastic community).
(2) “...we’d have to be quite inept for them to take us out easily.” - Original Japanese: 簡単にやられることはまずいでしょう (kantan ni yarareru koto ha mazui deshou). Literally something like “To be done easily would be unskillful,” but “yarareru” (to be done) is often used to mean “[they] got me/took me out/etc.,” so I’m working with that. Anyway, I’m not super confident with my version, so I figured I’d leave it here for anyone’s corrections and advice.

Ni-hao and mixed blessings all around. On the one hand, two Sunday posts in a row suggest that I've settled into my new place and am getting myself back into a weekly translation schedule. On the other hand, it's Dream World Week in Suzaku Ibun. Ugh. I have a vague memory of translating this scene at midnight and just shouting "Shut UP, Tomo!" over and over again at my computer screen. So, you know. Happy times. ^^;

Anyway, "Aono," math problems, and seishi interventions are below the jump. May the gods have mercy on us all.

Ni-hao and apologies for not posting last week. T'was Moving Week Part 2 (complicated process, moving is) and I had to prioritize a bit. But! I'm back this weekend with a heaping helping of Ibun as we enter the Makan Village Arc!

And I'm gonna be honest with you: I hate this part of the game. Hated it in the anime, too. It’s actually better here, but that’s really not saying much. So, I’m going to be translating/editing it very quickly, so we can get through it as painlessly as possible and move on to much better adventures. Take my hand, dear reader. ...It’s true that the others have done nothing but protect me.

But even so, I’ve been right there with them... fighting.

You: The others are... in danger...

You: ...I have to go... help them.

You: I have to hurry...!

Tomo: H’oh... So this is the will of the Priestess of Suzaku?

You: Get out of my way, Seiryuu Warrior Tomo.

You: Your made-up illusions can’t stop me!

Tomo: You’re rather spirited, aren’t you...?

Tomo: I commend you for standing up, Priestess of Suzaku

Tomo: But then, the Priestess of Seiryuu overcame this much as well.

Tomo: Aah, that agonized expression was a sight to see.

You: The Priestess of Seiryuu...

You: Misaki-chan!?

You: What did you do to Misaki-chan!?

Tomo: It would have been enjoyable if she hadn’t resisted. Instead, it was accompanied by quite a lot of pain.

Tomo: Her strength and willpower merited respect.

You: Answer me... What did you do to Misaki-chan!?

Tomo: *cackles* I changed her mind.

Tomo: Since you are her comrade, perhaps I can revel in the excitement of that moment once again. (2)

Tomo: I provided her with false memories.

Tomo: I made her believe you had betrayed her. And as time passed, her pain and humiliation waxed like the full moon.

Tomo: Those memories are the reason she resents you.

Tomo: Her feelings toward you changed from the trust and kindness she once had to the hatred she feels now.

Tomo: That is what drives her every move.

Tomo: She is your enemy. There is nothing you can do to help her.

You: You toyed with... Misaki-chan’s heart...

Tomo: *cackles* And what if I did?

You: …You think you can do that… to somebody’s heart?

You: ...I’ll never forgive you. How dare you do that to her...!

Tomo: Human emotions. In due time, anger is a feeling which strongly compels the heart.

Tomo: Yes, anger creates a gap in a person’s heart.

Tomo: And it is into those very gaps that my genjutsu penetrates.

Tomo: I will put an end to your painful journey, right here.

Tomo: I shall use my “shell,” the greatest genjutsu that I possess.

Tomo: I invite you to a world of the sweetest dreams.

You: What...?

Tomo: You can never escape me.

Translation Notes:

(1) “Habitual intemperance will do that to you.” Original Japanese: 日頃の不摂生が祟ってる (higoro no fusessei ga tatatteru) - literally “It comes about because of daily intemperance/neglect of health.” I considered a variety of broader translations (my favorite: “This is what happens when you eat and drink yourself into a coma every day”), but I got the feeling Mitsukake was being both peevish and professional, so I kept the language a bit scholarly. Still think it’s hilarious though. I kinda love how much Tasuki and Mitsukake annoy one another.

(2) “Yer already... a beast in human skin... “ - Here, Tasuki calls Nuriko a bakemono (化け物), literally “a thing that changes.” It’s a broad category in Japanese mythology that refers to entities which take on another form (such as the master shapeshifter, the tanuki). Sometimes you can get away with translating bakemono as “monster” or “ghost,” but neither is quite right. And I personally can’t decide if Tasuki’s taking a jab at Nuriko’s super-strength (implying he’s not human) or the fact that he’s a crossdresser (implying he too is “a thing that changes”). Anyway, I waffled between “shapeshifter” and “beast in human skin” for a long time, but the latter was more insulting so I went with it. Not that I love it. Anyway, I’m all ears if anyone has an alternate suggestion.

(3) Tomo is seriously the world’s biggest creeper, you guys. The word that I translated as “excitement” here is koufun (亢奮), and it comes with a heavy connotation of “arousal.” Damn near everything Tomo says comes with a heavy connotation of “arousal,” in fact. *shudders* I always want to take a shower after I translate his lines.

Suzaku Ibun: Camp Remains (Or, "My Bookish Family")

And we're back, with a whole mess of mysterious plays!

The “Camp Remains” location comes with a few different possible dialog options, depending on how many times you visit them. I've translated all of them (or at least all the versions with Chichiri in your party).

I don't want to spoil the surprise, but suffice to say, something happens on the fourth visit that is a major deviation from the original FY, and sets up one of the big decisions you get to make in the final arc of the story.

It’s also weird as hell. And only kind of makes sense, which is to say, it doesn't make sense at all. Aaaand I was feeling extra snarky when I translated it, so you’ll get a little of my running commentary throughout. Have fun, and as always, feel free to remark on this STARTLING TURN OF EVENTS in the comments below! ^^

You: He’s a doctor. It’ll be all right. He’s got an incredible ability, so he’ll heal your son in no time flat.

Mitsukake: No, my healing powers are a last resort. Usually I can treat an illness using my own abilities.

Mitsukake: I can cure him with a combination of my medicine and his willpower.

Mitsukake: Take this powder with water. You should feel much better after that.

Boy: Okay...

Boy: It’s bitter.

Mitsukake: Drink up. Very good.

Mitsukake: You should spend the evening getting plenty of rest.

Man: Th-thank you very much! How can I repay you...?

Mitsukake: You don’t need to worry about that. However, I do want to keep an eye on the boy overnight, just in case...

Man: Yes, by all means!

Mitsukake: Is that all right, [Your Name]?

You: Of course.

Mitsukake: Sorry. I know this is selfish of me.

You: Not at all. I think it’s very admirable.

You: If we can’t help the people right in front of us, we sure won’t be able to protect a whole country.

Man: This way, please.

Woman: It’s a little cramped, but you’re welcome to stay as long as you’d like.

You: Thank you very much.

Man: We’ve been on the road for a long time, so we can’t offer much in the way of hospitality. I’m sorry about that.

You: N-no, it’s totally fine!

You: We were trying to figure out where we were going to spend the night anyway.

You: All we need is a roof over our heads and we’re happy.

You: But... why’s the whole family traveling?

Man: ...We don’t have a place to call home.

Man: Our family was part of a small country that was destroyed a long time ago.

Man: Since then, we’ve been a nomadic peoples, wandering from nation to nation.

You: ...Oh... I see.

Man: We’re poor and can’t offer you much in the way of decent food.

Man: To repay you for helping my son, I’d like to tell you a legend passed down among our people.

You: You would? Please, I’d love to hear it.

Man: Then why don’t I tell you the story of how, when our country collapsed, a girl from another world came to us?

You: Huh...?

A girl... from another world...

The man slowly began to tell us the story. About his country’s collapse.

Man: There was a girl who was destined to summon Suzaku. She fell in love with a boy from our country. (2)

Man: The priestess gave in to temptation.

Man: The priestess was from another world. She knew that she wasn’t supposed to develop ties to the people of this world.

Man: But in the end, she was unable to control her emotions...

Man: She and her beloved gave themselves entirely to one another.

Man: As soon as the two were united, she was no longer qualified to be the priestess, and so she was sent back to her own world.

Man: Once our tiny nation lost its priestess, other nations invaded and snatched up our territory.

Man: It was too one-sided to call it a war, and far too brutal to call it a battle.

Man: Our nation was consumed by the fires of war, and reduced to ashes—

Man: In the end, we were destroyed completely.

Man: No one knows what happened to the girl during all this, but...

Man: It is said that the young man remembered her for as long as he lived.

Man: And the name of the girl, cast from our world because of love, was...

…

Man: That’s the end of the story.

Mitsukake: An exiled priestess, hm...? Very interesting...

Tamahome: ...Hey, what’s wrong? You look kinda pale.

You: Oh... no... it’s nothing.

That girl had the same name as my grandma—

But I’m sure it’s a coincidence...

You: Um... do you know if there’s an image of that priestess remaining anywhere?

Man: I have a portrait of her…

Then he showed me an old, faded painting.

The woman in the portrait was the spitting image of my mom.

So then... she really was...

Big Brother: You’ve been through some rough stuff, [Your Name].

You: Its all right. The others have been supporting me, so...

Big Brother: ...Right.

You: Hey... Big Brother. What’s wrong?

You: You don’t sound very chipper...

Big Brother: Yeah... guess I’m not.

You: Something about the Universe of the Four Gods?

Big Brother: Yeah...

Big Brother: ...Since the last time we talked, I did a bunch of research, too.

Big Brother: I looked into who else had the Universe of the Four Gods in their possession before we did.

Big Brother: For some reason, it looks like our family lineage has something to do with it.

You: Our... family?

Big Brother: Mom confirmed it, too.

Big Brother: She was shocked when I told her I knew about the Universe of the Four Gods.

Big Brother: Grandma used to tell her about it a long time ago. Though I get the feeling Mom thought it was nothing but a fairy tale.

[“Did I ever tell you about the time I doomed a nation because I couldn’t keep it in my pants?” "Yeah, Mom, like a hundred times...”]

Big Brother: Well, I put the rest of the pieces together on my own.

Big Brother: It looks like the Universe of the Four Gods book that you found was the original translation. In other words, it’s a copy.

Big Brother: Our grandma spent some time in China during the war. So I’m pretty sure she used the original version to travel to the book-world.

Big Brother: And then, after she abandoned her duties as priestess, she was sent back to her world—to China.

Big Brother: By then, Grandma was already pregnant with our mom.

Big Brother: And after the war, they came back to Japan, our mom grew up, married our dad, and you and I were born.

[...So I guess we’re just gonna cheerfully gloss over the part about how your grandma CAUSED THE COLLAPSE OF AN ENTIRE NATION, aren’t we? -_-;]

Big Brother: That’s the impression that I get.

—My brother’s story matched up perfectly with the priestess legend I’d just heard.

So then... that confirms it.

Big Brother: In other words, the ~~ink~~ blood of the people from the book-world runs through our veins.

You: The people from the book...

Hearing that was just as big a shock the second time around.

I was speechless.

Big Brother: But that means… it’s possible, I guess.

Big Brother: That you... could live in that world forever.

You: How could I...?

Big Brother: Let’s assume that the priestess has to go back home because she’s originally from a different world.

Big Brother: But you have blood ties with the people there, so... there’s no reason you’d have to leave.

I could stay here forever. I could stay with the others... and with that person... forever...

But then...

You: Then I’d never be able to see you or the rest of my family and friends again, right?

Big Brother: ...Probably, yeah.

You: No... that’d be terrible...

My family’s always been there with me...

Big Brother: …If you stayed there, you could be with the person who's so important to you.

You: You knew?

Big Brother: I’ve been reading along, so yeah.

You: Mm... They're really important to me.

Big Brother: I know... they are, huh.

You: ...Yeah.

If I choose one, I’ll lose the other.

If felt like my chest was caught in a vice.

What will I do? What should I do...?

Big Brother: It’s okay, [Your Name].

Big Brother: Every story has to end someday.

You: I have been thinking that, though.

…It kinda feels like I’m back in my own bedroom, chatting with my brother.

Big Brother: ...Later. I’m gonna go back to researching the Universe of the Four Gods.

Big Brother: Keep your chin up.

You: ...You too, Big Brother…

I couldn’t hear my brother’s voice anymore.

I hadn’t heard his voice in so long. It made me feel really nostalgic...

You: Huh... Y-you noticed?!

Nuriko: It’s one of those girl things! Once in a while there are times where a girl just wants to be alone!

Mitsukake: That’s right. You have a tendency to push yourself too hard.

You: ...Thanks, you guys.

Right. For now, the important thing is to summon Suzaku.

Until I do, I’ll keep the rest of it locked away in my heart.

It’s a problem that I’ll have to face eventually, whether I want to or not.

Translation Notes:

(1) Daijiin Temple (大寺院) - The kanji just reads “Daijiin,” which means “Large Temple.” So calling it “Daijiin Temple” is redundant. However, when you actually get to the temple, everyone calls it “Daijiin,” and it seems totally silly to be like, “This is the central temple in Sairou. It's called Large Temple.” So I opted to keep the original name and tag “temple” on so you’d know what it was. (You may remember that I did the same thing with the Houzoku Tribe.) Anyway, just wanted to let you know.

(2) “There was a girl who was destined to summon Suzaku” - No, you guys, I didn’t mistranslate. That’s what it says. And yeah, it doesn’t make sense to me, either. How can two different nations summon Suzaku? Are we to assume that Konan is a relatively young nation, built on the bones of an older, ruined one? Are these people connected to Nakago's tribe in any way, or are these two separate nomadic peoples? Did the game's writers even think that hard about it? Somebody, please write this ‘fic and fansplain it for me.

Suzaku Ibun: Sairou Map and Borderlands

Since it's been a while, I'm rewarding you all with a nice fat chunk of Ibun! Most of it is in the next post, though. Since Blogger "jumps" work a little differently than LJ "cuts," instead of trying to cram multiple locations into a single post, it's easier to separate the posts by location and/or AU story line.

So this post is just an intro to Sairou, and the dialog for if you return to "Borderlands" after you get to Sairou. But the post directly following it is full of all kinds of plot-relevant weirdness. Cross my heart.

Script Note: I started using colored highlights to denote character-specific dialog. This works pretty well in the PDF files I'm trying to create, so I want to use it in the blog posts from now on, too. For now, the only highlight you'll see is purple for Nuriko, since (if you're following along with me) you may or may not have her at this point. Now there are ways for these scenes to not have Chiriko or Chichiri, but I haven't played those yet, so I'm not going to try marking them. I'll try to do that later.

I've been busy with moving and other exciting projects, so there won't be any translations this weekend (my sincerest apologies). However, while you're waiting for more Ibun, there are a couple of things to check out:

Not being in school has made me crazy productive. I finally did That Thing I've Been Talking About Doing For Years and started an anime blog!

It's really important to me that we build a big, friendly anime community, bringing in new viewers while also helping veteran otaku find new shows and fandoms, so the site is a combination of user-friendly reviews, recommendations, and "Anime 101" lessons. With some gifs thrown in for good measure, of course.

Suzaku Ibun: Konan Bonus Dialog

Hello all!

I've been hard at work trying to create a nice, easy-to-navigate PDF for Part 1, Chapter 2 of Suzaku Ibun. Turns out it's a bit of a rabbit hole - this is the part of the story where you wander around Konan looking for Celestial Warriors, so there's lots and lots (and lots!) of alternate dialogue, depending on the order in which you do things.

I may not be able to cover absolutely everything, but I did go back and start translating some of the early "opening scene" dialogue options. And, as long as I'm doing that, I figured I'd share it with you, too. Translations and notes after the jump.

As those of you who followed this translation on my LJ may remember, Part 1, Chapter 2 opens with Tamahome asking you where you want to go. I originally chose "Move to another region" and then went back to the palace and the city proper later. However, if you take these scenes in a different order, you get some different (and amusing) dialogue.

For those who haven't followed my translations before, a quick note on scripting: Whenever I'm translating an alternate version of a scene, I use dashes (-----) to denote lines that are "universal" (i.e., the same in all versions). This is to help you find your place in the translation. For large chunks, I'll use [Same dialog] in brackets. And so:

Look for celestial warriors inside the palace

You: Well, how about we check out the palace grounds?

You: Take a look at this.

I rummaged through my pack and pulled out The Universe of the Four Gods scroll I’d been given.

You: There are hints about the Celestial Warriors written on this scroll...

You: It says “Palace” and “Warrior.” It could maybe mean someone from the court.

----Tamahome: ...I see. “Warrior” would make it a courtier... with ferocious strength?

-----You: What’s that? I can hear voices…

Hotohori: Those are the empresses of the inner court.

You: The Lady Empresses? Wait, who are they?

You: Whaaaa! Hotohori! You’re married?!

Hotohori: …To be precise, they are Imperial consorts. I have no interest in choosing an empress from among the inner court. (1)

Hotohori: [Your Name], it is essential that you maintain your health. How would you like to take a break to chat with these other young ladies?

Tamahome: …Personally, I think we should keep looking for Celestial Warriors, but it’s your call.

Translation Notes:

(1) The ladies of the inner court - First, Hotohori uses the term “妃,” which the game actually takes the time to spell out phonetically as kisaki, meaning “empress” or “queen.” Then when he says they’re “Imperial consorts,” he uses the term 妃侯, which the game does not bother to spell out phonetically and which none of my dictionaries have ever seen. 妃 can mean either “empress,” “princess,” or “consort,” depending on the pronunciation, and 侯 refers to a lord or marquis. So I kinda just used context to translate it. If anyone has ever seen these two characters together before and wants to jump in with a better translation, be my guest.

(2) I feel like I’m very stupidly misunderstanding this, but the original is あなたはあたしが、何があっても護ってみせる (anata ha atashi ga, nani ga attemo mamotte-miseru). Which I really feel should be “you’ll show me that you’ll protect me no matter what,” but that doesn’t really make sense in context, so I switched the you/me. *Sigh* No matter how long I play this game, every once in a while something as simple as は and が particles still throw me off...
