Rondo Hatton Awards

2014-06-17T20:49:00.000-04:00

Wow were we late on posting these results, lol. Better late than never, here are the results for the 12th Annual Rondo Hatton Awards.

For the uninitiated the "Rondo's" are a fan based awards show that real people vote in all of the Horror categories from magazine covers (ie Rue Morgue,Fangoria, etc) to DVD Horror Collections, modelling, Horror Hosts (Svenghoulie,Elvira, etc) to the actual Horror Movies.

As well the Rondo's fill the gap that various mainstream awards just are too afraid to handle, because they are cowardly sniveling rats! lol.

Cthulhu Mythos Retro Action figures.

2014-06-13T17:27:00.001-04:00

Turns out there is a kickstarter campaign (love these things!) to get Cthulu action figures made.
Sign me up!

The Legends of Cthulu series of action figures look amazing and will be made by WARPO toys.
"June 9th, 2014 – At 8 a.m. Warpo has officially launched our first Kickstarter for “Legends of Cthulhu”, the first retro styled 3.75″ action figure line based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft."

From what I can see these guys know their material and are fans of the Call of Cthulu RPG's from the 80's and Dungeons and Dragons and are passionate about getting it right. Interestingly the figures put me in mind of the Dungeons and Dragons toys from that time (which the Kount and I were HUGE fans). For further authenticity the team had hired Eddie Mosqueda (of 80s Mattel and TMNT Fig fame)There is also a Pinterest page here

Monsters on Vacation

2014-04-25T10:05:00.001-04:00

Wow, it's been a long time since I have wrote on here. I'll be honest I've never been much of a writer, and have always had difficulty converting the jumbled mess in my noggin to paper(type). Initially I started blogging on here to SIMPLY show some things I thought were cool, much like one does on facebook. It somehow mutated into doing reviews, which god love em' , for those who can write them properly. Unfortunately, I've always kinda hated doing lengthy reviews. So tomorrow I climb aboard a plane, a literal one, and go off on vacation. See I did it just there, an unnatural jump from one topic to another, much like the disjointed thoughts I have. And don't forget my horrible grammar.....lol..ok so going on a vacation to the lovely island of Cuba (or so I am told). Once there it is my intent to drink copious amounts of alcohol, explore Havana, see Hemingway's abode/boat, explore caves, and generally relax. Upon my return I will try to go forward and poke my nose back in here more often.....so wish me luck and talk to you all soon!

Lord of Tears film review (no spoilers) 2013

2013-12-22T20:23:00.002-05:00

Kount Kreepy was kind enough (or was it really to torment me?) to drop off "Lord of Tears"for me to review.

Thanks to Lawrie Brewster the director for sending this collectors DVD to review.

This movie fits the bill for creepy movies. The haunting imagery starts strongly right from the beginning and does not disappoint. The tone is like an impending doom that makes you wait and want to know more as the story evolves and has some twists toward the end that many won't see coming, but done in a way that is fitting with the story and characters. Based on urban legend as well as ancient myths gives it some historical setting. If one is a Jungian follower of psychology you could well find that this film will hit that deep seated nerve or collective memory.

There is a dark wintry feeling to the imagery and scenery with brief moments of faint hope for the main characters against a foreboding back drop. Lord of Tears relies on the camera work and ambiance instead of the special effects and CGI that too many films seem to rely on these days. Its like being taken back to when films could scare the crap out of you without the buckets of blood and fancy tricks.
(imagery courtesy of Lord of Tears on tumbler)

I hate comparing films to others as this one surely stands on it's own but for those looking for an idea or "its kind of like such and such" this film has elements of other films I've enjoyed immensely. Some films just stick with you for a long time after and Lord of Tears is no exception to that.

Visually it has a lot of power and suggestion to it putting me in the mind of films like Ringu (or The Ring in English- a Japanese Horror film) or The Shining (When a building just sitting there gives you the creeps!)

Feeling wise it puts me in mind of Dagon or In The Mouth of Madness which fits in with the Lovecraft style and pace of the film. Given that the budget was from a Kickstarter campaign the film is great.

A part of the film struck a chord with me (I don't think its really a spoiler), the main character finds the taps in the bathroom turn on by themselves. Many moons ago I had stayed at a hotel that was allegedly haunted and awoke to find the taps on. Thinking about it this happened twice at two different locations and both were apparently haunted!

So enough said already. Get the DVD, it has some great bonus features including an interview with the Director who comes across as inclusive with his audience. He is like a tour guide of horror coming along with you for the ride and experiencing what you experience, he just has a few more of the answers and helps put it all into perspective.

Also there is a quick mention of the next project "The Unkindness of Ravens" about:

"Andrew Alburn, a homeless veteran suffering from PTSD is plagued by flashbacks, stemming from a traumatic event he witnessed while in the armed forces. He spends time in a highland retreat where he hopes to overcome his fear of ravens, the dark creatures that trigger and populate his visions. But in the bleak highlands of Scotland, his nightmares manifest into an enemy more powerful than he could ever have imagined." from Facebook

being a veteran myself I can't wait to see this. If Lawrie does it any justice like Dog Soldiers (portraying military characters as more than 2D cut outs) I'm sure it will be a good film.

Lords of Salem review

2013-09-30T16:38:00.000-04:00

Just finished watching it and had a few things I wanted to get out before I sleep on the rest of it.

First impressions....The Shining meets Lair of the White Worm. It had the feel of a lot of the creepy 1970's horror films which had cults and devil worship with the promise of the devil coming back in human form ( Blood on Satan's Claw, Rosemary's Baby, Hungry Wives,The Pyx,Carrie,Audrey Rose, etc. The surreal and what the fuck of The Wicker Man). Funny how life would be influenced by art, that would play out later in the big whipped up fears of devil cults and heavy metal music of the 1980's (PMRC-Tipper Gore, now her husband tries to scare us about Carbon). The fears of right wing evangelical America .The following song features in the film and is pretty fucking creepy.

A very different movie from Rob Zombie's "Devil's Rejects", which seemed to be just a shocker for the sake of it. I was expecting that watching this but was pleased to see it was not just a bunch of shock and gore for the hell of it. Actually it was pretty artsy and had a bit more depth to it than many of his previous films. I hope it's the start of Rob Zombie coming into his own as a more serious director.

Post sleep- after thoughts

Had some more time to dwell on it after a strange dream about musical scoring and sheet music, lol.

There was quite a bit this film had to offer and some great background, etc but it kind of felt disjointed which I wonder if that was almost deliberate. I figured that maybe getting the low down from the man himself might help. So here's Rob Zombie in an interview about Lords of Salem.

This film was certainly a departure from his previous shock films and was more of a thinking kind of movie with horror as the vehicle for it. Over all it was an enjoyable movie and think that Rob Zombie has branched out trying out a new approach. The critics bashed it into the ground but to hell with em, this ain't no happy ending feel good film. Also might as well enjoy it as Rob Z claims that this is his last horror movie for at least 10 years. Now something comes to mind like "you take the boy out of the blah blah but not the blah blah out of the bogy. Stay tuned, I give him 3 years tops.

Harbinger Down. A return to animitronics, fx make up.

2013-09-30T00:17:00.002-04:00

Harbinger Down. A Practical Creature FX Film.

This creature feature will be a return to animitronics and actual fx make up art. Lance Henriksen is helping back this up as well as some other heavy hitters via Kickstarter (they already reached their goal, but hey more money is always better). Sultan Saeed Al Darmaki of Dark Dunes Productions (teaming up with Studio ADI) has also come on board after the Kickstarter campaign to team up and get this movie out there. After seeing the video I gotta say I can't freakin wait for this one. Give us back our animitronics and real f/x, someone else can have CGI!

The Story (from the site)

"A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship's crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation.
Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren't about to give up the warmth of human companionship. "

I going to go out on a limb and say that Frankenstein's Army woke up allot of people in the industry and fandom to realize what we were all missing in the CGI movie world.

Not unlike the difference musically between analog sound and digital. Sure digital (like CGI) is convenient but it's just missing that certain quality. And luckily I'm not the only one who shares this belief.

Alec Gillis (of Amalgamated Dynamics Inc.) is leading the project some of you may know him from such awesome creature features as Aliens and The Thing (2011 version), Starship Troopers and more.

"In 1985 he met Creature Legend Stan Winston and worked on Invaders From Mars, Aliens, Predator, Leviathan, and Monster Squad, among others. In 1988, along with Tom Woodruff , Jr. Alec formed Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. Their first feature film was Tremors, followed by Alien 3 (Oscar nomination), Death Becomes Her (Oscar win), Mortal Kombat, Jumanji, Starship Troopers (Oscar nomination) , The Santa Clause franchise, the Spider-Man franchise, the Alien vs. Predator franchise, Wolverine: Origins, X-Men: First Class, The Thing (2011)."- from Kickstarter profile.

Harbinger Down Website

Again we can't wait for this one and are looking forward to seeing what this crew will bring back to creature features!!! -Evil von Scarry. Thanks for tuning in.

Frankenstein's Army film review 2013

2013-08-03T17:13:00.000-04:00

Frankensteins Army film review

Evil von Scarry signing in here. Saw this movie finally at long last!
As a follow up article of Kount Kreepy's announcement of the film (pre-release) here's my review of the film. I would recommend that folks check out KK's article as it gives a good backgrounder and some other things from "Worst Case Scenario" (by Richard Raaphorst ) the proto-Frankenstein's Army.

1/ Its a great movie, go see it. Especially if your one of those (like use) that have been waiting essentially since "Worst Case Scenario" for this movie.
2/ This is essentially a creature feature, and a good one at that. Lots of gore , great creature fx/make up and prop work. No need for CGI here!
3/ not exactly Academy Award acting, but good enough as really it's a fun movie and not a drama.
4/ never mind the critics, they take themselves too seriously and film too seriously. Really. Its about reanimated monsters for Pete's sake!
5/ Richard Raaphorst as his directorial debut did a great job!

SPOILERS******************** Last warning**********SPOILERS **********SPOILERS**************************

I'll try not to spoil the whole thing, but be warned.

It was a great creature feature. The Germans are using one of the descendants of Dr. Frankenstein who happens to have a mad penchant for reanimation of corpses (and sometimes not so dead) and creating killer undead cyborg monstrosities.

A Russian reconnaissance patrol is out near the end of World War 2 and stumbles across the man made hell of Dr.Frankenstein's Army in a near abandoned industrial town somewhere in East Europe. Taken from a "found footage" aspect it does still flip into cinematic so won't drive away those who hate the found footage genre.

I wasn't sure what to expect and wasn't disappointed. However. The setting was a bit haunted house

and felt, kind of a "look and see what we can do". With the glut of WW2 soldiers vs. zombies we've seen the last few years I think the FA team did what they could to be different and stand on their own which they accomplished. FA did seem a bit rushed and if they had a bigger budget and more film they could have done an epic film instead of just a good film.

Felt a bit like House of 1000 Corpses meets Dawn of the Dead and insert found footage film here. As I've said before it does stand on it's own and has earned it's place in the horror film lexicon. I hope it does spawn a sequel and maybe with a bigger budget this time. Some critics knocked it down but to hell with them, this was a fun movie!-EvS

Hansel and Gretal: Witch Hunters review

2013-06-28T04:18:00.000-04:00

With Kount Kreepy on vacation at some nice island somewhere I guess it's up to me to keep with hearth fire burning on this here blog.

Hansel and Gretel With Hunters is brought to us from the same guy who did Dead Snow ,Thomas Wirkola, (and upcoming Dead Snow:War of the Dead) as the writer and director.

This movie kicks ass, has great gore and effects, some good laughs and generally rocks!

The film starts off with the Hansel (Jeremy Renner)and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) we all know from fairy tales but gets a bit Tarantino after that. Fast forward 15 years later with Hansel and Gretal hunting down witches until they get hired by a town to find out what's happened to the town's children that have gone missing and eventually unravel a plot involving a Grand Evil Witch (Famke Jennsen )and her coven seeking..... see the movie I won't spoil it.

There's quite a big nod to the "Steampunk" genre here as well through some really cool gadgets and gizmo's in the witch hunters arsenal and it works with the atmosphere of the movie. There is also a sequel in the works and I for one am looking forward to it! Rotten Tomatoes hated it so fuck them. Chances are if you read this blog on a regular basis then you know this will be a fun movie. If your looking for deep meanings and superb acting and some lah dee dah crap this aint your movie. If your looking for some action/adventure and kicking some supernatural ass, this will satisfy! -Evil von Scarry

THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X (a review)

2013-06-24T01:11:00.000-04:00

THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X

One of those "underground" films (directed by Paul Bunnel) that looked like an Ed Wood homage and turned out to
be just as horrible. That being said if your a David Lynch fan and like that sort of over the top method style acting (like Brando in the Wild One or Liz Taylor back in the 50's) then this film might be for you. I for one HATE musicals (unless you put TOMMY or PINK FLOYD's THE WALL in that genre) so it was a major stretch for me to sit through the whole film. I did it cuz Kount Kreepy had me watch it. So figured better watch the whole damned thing before I attempt a review.

However my love of the weird and the 1950's cheesy sci-fi movies kept me going through what was a sci-fi comedy musical and was just quirky enough to stand on it's own. I'm pretty sure it will eventually become a cult classic, probably once it has some showings in Japan and then comes back to North America again. Looking into the film it cost about 2 Million to make and made about 117 bucks in ticket sales, LMAO.It was also named the worst film of 2012. Hell I'd see it on that accreditation alone!

The gist is a gang of bad ass rebel greaser types on a planet that is all about law and order finally get

exiled to what I'm guessing is the late 1950's early 60's earth. Tie in a dead rock n roller that gets resurrected using alien technology and some musical numbers with plenty of nods to various film and cult genres. Some of the rockabilly/psycho-billy crowd will also get a kick from the period pieces in the film.

From the people who brought you this film:

quote-"Shot on black-and-white Kodak film stock, Paul Bunnel’s 1950s throwback dials up the weirdness of the already surreal genre of sci-fi B movies with showstopping musical numbers, over-the-top dialogue, and hilariously hokey special effects.

Banished to Earth for intergalactic juvenile delinquency, Johnny X and his gang of Ghastly Ones set off in search of a piece of alien technology that could change the fate of the universe forever—the so-called “resurrection suit.” Soon, the extraterrestrial nogoodniks are embroiled in a wacky scheme involving a femme fatale named Bliss, a shifty concert promoter with schemes of his own, and a recently deceased musician who won’t let a little decomposition stop him from rocking." -end quote

If your a film buff or just a lover of cheesy films then it'll be worth your while to see this film. I can't really say anything bad about it but it's not on my list of fav's either. Then again I hated Rocky Horror Picture Show but absolutely loved Blue Velvet. This film has a similar feel of elements of both those films but does stand on it's own. It was also the last film appearance of Kevin McCarthy before his passing ( starred in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" -1956).

I've left some links below to various media linked with the film. -Evil von Scarry

Evil Dead 2013 review

2013-06-10T02:35:00.000-04:00

Finished watching Evil Dead the new one 2013. The Kount and I were both pretty pissed off we weren't the first Monster Kids in line for it but family, work, etc sometimes get in the way.

Well worth the watch, now of course not as good as the original (are they ever really?).
But this had the atmosphere that creeps people out and had some nods to the original but
still able to pull it off as it's own dog. Having said that though there's some parts in this new one that I will never forget!

It was pretty fucked up and had some really over the top moments. The effects were very well done

and has plenty for fans of the original. Being a huge fan myself (yeah I even got the t-shirt) of the original I was pleased to be able to pick out some "Easter eggs" from the original but also surprised that the film was able to do it's own ideas as well instead of just being a clone of the original film.

The beginning of the film actually gave something the original did not, some visual backgrounder. The original gave the backgrounder through an audio tape. This one actually SHOWS YOU what happened, which I thought was pretty cool.

Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell ('hail to the King baby!') are producers of this film so for anyone out there who are worried Sam and Bruce weren't going to put up with anyone fucking with this film. And to all those pussies in movie theatres world wide who got up and walked out, what the fuck did you expect from a film entitled EVIL DEAD. LMAO for fuck sakes it's not a fucking Disney film!
To fans of the Evil Dead franchise if you've been holding back, don't. Go and see it. It will be worth your while. Cheers, Evil von Scarry.

Rondo Hatton Awards results

2013-05-31T15:55:00.002-04:00

A quick overview of the Rondo Hatton (Horror) Awards 2012 winners
for full article please visit the RHA website here :

We vote annually in these awards and feel it's one of the best real markers of horror fans. The Rondo's cut out the politics of the film industry and goes right to the people who appreciate horror films and their various genres.

" The Rondo awards, named after Rondo Hatton, an obscure B-movie villain of the 1940s, recognize the best in classic horror research, creativity and film preservation. This year's e-mail vote, conducted by the Classic Horror Film Board, an 18-year old online community, drew a record of more than 3,400 votes as fans chose among 35 categories"

Best Horror Movie 2012 -A Cabin in the Woods- a homage to 80's teen thrillers took 1st place. Not my pick... but hey congrats.

Monster Kid of the Year- Simon Rowson:
"the award program's highest honor -- for his work discovering snippets of footage in Japan that had 'Dracula' with Christopher Lee in 1958 (Retitled 'Horror of Dracula' in the U.S.). As a result of his efforts, a new restored version of the film has been released in Britain."

been cut from the original release of Hammer's

Best Horror Magazine of the Year- Rue Morgue
no surprise there, Rue Morgue the Canadian horror mag is one of the best! Rue Morgue also sponsors the Festival of Fear in Toronto, Canada every year!

Best TV Presentation- The Walking Dead- no surprise there either. This is one of the best things to happen to television in a loooooonnnnngggg time. About time we got something besides "reality tv". Excellent series and well written. Its really a drama with a horrifying zombie apocolypse as the background and continuous source of tension that drives the characters.

The RHA site has lots of other categories that are just as important but were not here to steal the thunder. -EvS

CatchMeKillMe Productions Indie Spotlight

2013-05-15T21:01:00.001-04:00

Hello fellow creeps! This will be this first installment of spotlights on independent horror, and hopefully followed by many more. Independent horror has always been dear to my blackened heart and I feel it needs any exposure I can offer. So without furthure ado here we go:

CATCHMEKILLME PRODUCTIONS

From the creepy canyons of Sierra Vista Arizona, a new horror emerges!! CatchMeKillMeFilms is an independent film production company founded by Ian Messenger and several of his fiends. On a shoe string budget they've managed pull together and create some fantastic horror films and shorts. Ian's first film "The Hog: A return to Fear" has even caught the eye of none other than the Master of Cheese Horror Lloyd Kaufman! Saying "The Hog is the best attempt at a short film I've ever seen"Sic. After watching all of their gruesome vids on Youtube, not only am I a fan but I love seeing the evolution in quality! The story tie ins are also a great touch. With support of fans and horror aficionados I hope to see these guys rise to great things! Here are some of my favourites, in all their juicy bloody glory:

The Bad Man

Keeper

The Hog: a Return to Fear

If you haven't discovered the demented fun of CatchMeKillMe I suggest you do! So PLEASE support indie horror and watch their stuff, comment, and refer! Without indie horror there would be no mainstream/cult horror!

Scary toys from the 50's IN THE AGE OF THE ATOM!!!! MUHAHAHAHAHA

2013-04-30T17:40:00.000-04:00

In in age were everything Atomic was fucking cool and scary at the same time. The 1950's were an iconic time from music to movies, socially, politically, etc. Our friend John Cozzoli of Zombo's Closet put up a pic of a childhood toy that got us really thinking we missed the boat on some cool stuff.

Really? Yup it's the Atomic Energy Lab from BlamCo! No just kidding (little Fallout 3 reference there, lol see our Entertainment in the Post Apocalypse article) . But this was a real product. John made a comment about it not being as dangerous as the Gilbert one. More dangerous when were talking about an Atomic Energy Lab!? LMAO fuck yeah we just had to check that out!

So it turns out the Gilbert Atomic Energy Lab is one of the most infamous toys that has ever existed! Fuck me. Makes me want to paint the whole house with lead based paint and reinstall the vinyl asbestos tile in the kitchen, lmao. It least then I would be safe from the Reds!

The inventor of this set (and the less dangerous but famous Erector set) was Albert C. Gilbert.

This link has a pretty good page outlining the set and has lots of associated pictures and packaging.

The kids in the 50's must have been pretty tough especially compared to today's bubble wrap kids and their "helicopter parents". They got to play outside with guns, chemistry sets and apparently radioactive materials. How did they ever survive!!

UFO draining the sun?

2013-04-15T00:01:00.000-04:00

Little green men, greys, and other alien ideas seemed to a far stretch to me. Not that I don't believe there is alien life out there in the universe. In fact I think its statistically impossible for there not to be. I just never really bought the idea that they would bother to make their way here to kill cows and ass probe us. Over the years I have scoured the internet in a vain attempt to find anything that could prove to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt that extraterrestrial life was visiting our universe. I've searched endless "UFO expert" sites, tons of youtube videos, and spent countless hours trying to find a scrap of anything that might give me hope that there is a chance of visitation. Yes I am a self professed geek...but a video I saw tonight may have changed my views for good. I don't pretend to understand what I've seen in these videos. And after digging myself, holy shit! you need to see this for yourself.

This is the original video I watched. As a subscriber to Wowforreeel I've seen many interesting things, some convincing, some not so much. Until this video... the final segment was what caught my eye. Just for a bit of background Wowforreeel, is the host and the name of the channel that covers ufos, strange events, aliens, Nibiru , anomalies, and other strangeness. Very interesting, so subscribe. So this video begins like some of videos do, with some theatrics..hard to exp[lain just watch..take note of final segment.

http://www.youtube.com/user/wowforreeel

WTF was that??!! So I dug deeper and found this video...

Ok, adding some credibility..I found the original clip that caught my eye..this is it.

Meh, has to be a photoshoped video or something...I thought the same thing. But on a whim I went to this link:

http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/aiahmi/index.php

a NASA site dedicated to observation of the sun. and entered the following dates into the parameters:

March 11, 2012 and March 13, 2012

AIA 171(gold) default one

resolution 1024 x 1024

and left bottom one blank

Lo and behold there it is....

Now I know it won't make a believer out of all of you..but man, it sure is perplexing and worth seeing.

The Pact
a U.S. 2012 horror/thriller directed by Nicholas McCarthy
This film stars, Caity Lotz,Casper Van Dien,Agnes Bruckner,Haley Hudson (who I refer to as Sheldon's sister lol),Kathleen Rose Perkins ,
Samuel Ball and Mark Steger

Watched this on IFC. First impression I was a bit hesitant, as all the actors were too good looking, but within the 10-20 minute mark one gets sucked into the story pretty easily.

Film Description (from IFC)
" After their mother passes away, sisters Nicole and Annie Annie begins experiencing a series of intense and disturbing dreams – visions that lead her to uncover something terrible about her mother’s past that is finally revealing itself.

reluctantly return to their childhood home to pay their last respects. While staying overnight in the house, the sisters sense a mysterious presence in their midst: noises startling them in the night, objects moving about, a fallen picture of an unknown woman posed next to their mother. "

Starts off as a supernatural thriller/haunted house film and soon gets into a mystery thriller, with a time pressure, imminent threat of death and possibly someone eating your soul. Low budget enough to have that grittier indy film appeal but enough money involved that it retains quality.

Camera work is done well and adds to the effect and feel of the film. The acting is done well and the main protagonist (Annie played by Caity Lotz) has acting ability and doesn't rely on her looks to sell the film like bigger budget films.

Worth the watch and one of those films best enjoyed at home on the couch with the lights turned off! Will give you some good scares, make you think and not insult your intelligence. See this film!-EvS

Is Terminator soon to be a reality?

2013-04-06T02:47:00.000-04:00

I often wonder if the whole "terminator" movie scenario is science fiction turned inevitable reality. Are we doomed, those of us who survive, to run around in a post-apocalyptic world, filled with killer robots? We certainly seem hell bent on getting there. Scientists working under sketchy military subcontractors and other smoke and mirror bodies, are working over time to create all the crazy things we see in sci fi flicks. Are we headed in this direction? I think so... you tell me:

Here is a "dog" robot designed to lug things(so far). Imagine if you will this thing if you will, 5 times the size and armed to the teeth.

It s seem benign enough now..but given the right mods it could be scary as hell.

Now for the true frightening:

..not very exciting..but you can see where they're headed.

Cthulhu Lives in the gut of a termite! (and more!)

Cthulhu Lives In The Gut Of A Termite

As well as in the malevolent deeps

By Martha HarbisonPosted 04.04.2013 at 3:32 pm2 Comments

The Dread Cthulhu Wikipedia

Scientists have been naming species after famous people for a long time. For example, Thomas Jefferson has an extinct giant ground sloth named after him. Mark Knopfler rates a dinosaur. Frank Zappa has multiple animals sharing his namesake, including a spider, a jellyfish and a mudskipper.

Now joining those hallowed ranks is one of the Great Old Ones. Scientists at the University of British Columbia and the University of Florida bequeathed two new genera of symbiotic protists their own dread names: Cthulhu and Cthylla.

The protists, not surprisingly, have a lot of tentacles. (Or, well, they have tentacle-like appendages. In fact, if they didn't have tentacle-like appendages, I would have been writing this column berating the researchers for their oversight). But, as the researchers say in the abstract to their paper, published in PLOS One: "Both genera have […] an anterior bundle flagella (and likely a single posterior flagellum) that emerge slightly subanteriorly and have a distinctive beat pattern. Cthulhu is relatively large and has a distinctive bundle of over 20 flagella whereas Cthyllais smaller, has only 5 anterior flagella."

The critters live inside termite guts and help the termites digest the cellulose in wood. I had no idea that R'lyeh was situated in the body cavity of an insect, rather than at the bottom of the South Pacific.

The Lovecraftian purists out there are probably looking at the second genus and muttering "bullsh*t" to themselves--Cthylla (apparently Cthulhu's youngest progeny) was not created by H.P. Lovecraft. She was invented in 1975 by writer Brian Lumley. I'm not going to get into a nerd-rage fueled throwdown over the nomenclature and rightness of using a latter-day addition to the mythos in the same paper as the hallowed original. I'm just going to use this as an excuse to bust out my copy of At The Mountains of Madness and call in sick tomorrow for work.

Synopsis

Miskatonic University has a long-whispered reputation of being strongly connected to all things occult and supernatural. From the faculty to the students, the fascination with other-worldly legends and objects runs rampant. So, when Carter Weston's professor Dr. Thayerson asks him to search a nearby village for a book that is believed to control the inhuman forces that rule the Earth, Incendium Maleficarum, The Inferno of the Witch, the student doesn't hesitate to begin the quest.

Weston's journey takes an unexpected turn, however, when he ventures into a tavern in the small town of Anchorhead. Rather than passing the evening as a solitary patron, Weston joins four men who regale him with stories of their personal experiences with forces both preternatural and damned. Two stories hit close to home as they tie the tellers directly to Weston's current mission.

His unanticipated role as passive listener proves fortuitous, and Weston fulfills his goal. Bringing the book back to Miskatonic, though, proves to be a grave mistake. Quickly, Weston realizes he has played a role in potentially opening the gate between the netherworld and the world of Man. Reversing the course of events means forgetting all he thought he knew about Miskatonic and his professor and embracing an unknown beyond his wildest imagination.

Own a Dire Wolf?

2013-03-26T16:55:00.000-04:00

Well here is an interesting article about a breed of dog that is similar to the "Dire Wolf". Loveable and expensive to feed...(not to mention cleaning up giant poo)..it is not not for every family, but with a lot of time, space, and energy, it might be for you.

Your Dreams of Owning a Dire Wolf Can Finally Come True (Sort Of)

American Alsatian puppies might be as close to a dire wolf as Game of Thrones fans can come.

You’ve been reading or watching Game of Thrones. You’ve lovingly lingered over the descriptions of Gray Wind running into battle with Rob. You cried for Lady and cheered when Nymeria used Joffrey’s arm as a chew toy. Perhaps you’ve even caught yourself looking back over your lease agreement and wondering if “dire wolf” qualifies as an exotic pet.

Unfortunately, you’re a few millennia late for the real thing: While real dire wolves once roamed the Americas, Canis dirus went extinct about 10,000 years ago, with no descendant species. Northern Inuit Dogs — HBO’s choice for dire-wolf stand-ins — more closely resemble the modern gray wolf, Canis lupus, which is not only illegal to keep as a pet in the United States but more likely to share the temperament of the feral, skittish Shaggydog than gentle Lady.

But while wolf-dog hybrids often come with many of the same temperamental and legal issues as their wilder cousins, there may be another option for those seeking a large, wolfy companion: the Dire Wolf Project, undertaken by the American Alsatian Breeders Association.

According to breed founder Lois Schwarz, the Dire Wolf Project is an attempt to bring back the look of the extinct dire wolf in a domesticated companion dog breed. How close have they come? I visited Schwarz Kennels, home of the Dire Wolf Project, in White City, Oregon, to find out.

Lois Schwarz has been breeding dogs since 1975, and began developing the American Alsatian breed in 1987 with the goal of a large, long-lived companion dog. Schwarz wanted a wolflike appearance, but with a wider and heavier-set physique than the slender gray wolves; her project found its name when her daughter pointed out that the physical characteristics Schwarz was aiming for might better describe a prehistoric dire wolf.

It’s worth noting that the Dire Wolf Project isn’t a true breeding back project; there are no known surviving samples of dire wolf genetic material, and Schwarz’s selective breeding for aesthetics is entirely different from scientifically based de-extinction projects like the effort to resurrect the passenger pigeon. Schwarz hasn’t made a detailed study of dire wolf physiology or bone structure, or sought significant input from a paleontologist or geneticist. And even if she had, no concrete evidence as to the coloration or coat of C. dirus exists.

That said, American Alsatians look really cool. They’re distinctly wolfy, but wider, shaggier and warmer in color than huskies, malamutes or modern gray wolves. Basically, they’re the kind of fantasy wolves that wouldn’t look out of place howling at a T-shirt moon, which may be exactly the sort of pet that a lot of would-be members of House Stark are looking for.

Topping out at 130 pounds, American Alsatians are not quite up to dire wolf size, but in that regard Schwarz says the breed will be informed more by practicality than accuracy. Few families are looking for a 160-pound dog, and Schwarz is anxious to avoid American Alsatians ending up at the pound.

And what Schwarz’s dogs lack in prehistoric dire wolf minutiae, they make up for with their pleasant temperament. The cluster of characteristics she claimed to be able to breed for consistently — intelligent, alert pups who would seek human contact but sit calmly instead of chasing or barking — seemed unlikely, especially for a breed whose ancestors were primarily working dogs.

Then, I met my first American Alsatian puppies. At four weeks, they crawled up wide-eyed and alert to investigate my shoes, as their mother Autumn sat patiently by.

“Watch this,” Schwarz told me. “This is a temperament test.” She dropped a large chest of tools on the ground with a clang. I jumped, but the puppies just glanced lazily over before continuing about their business. Even as puppies, American Alsatians are noticeably calm, whether they’re exploring their environment or scooped up in your arms; it’s easy to believe Schwarz’s claim that many end up companion or therapy dogs for owners with special needs.

So how close are they to actual dire wolves? Extinct canid expert Xiaoming Wang of the Vertebrate Paleontology Department at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles told Wired that an actual genetic connection is very unlikely, given that dogs originated much later than — and on a different continent from — dire wolves. And Schwarz herself admits that the reconstruction on which she’s basing the breed’s coat and stature are more wishful and fantasy-oriented than scientific, matched more to the needs of prospective owners than prehistoric fact.

Still, if what you’re after is a friendly, mellow dog with that shaggy, fantasy-wolf look, an American Alsatian might be your best bet. Don’t get too excited, though: Even if you can hack the $3,000 price tag, there’s a long waiting list for puppies, which Schwarz expects will get even longer as more Game of Thrones fans find their way to her kennels.

Still wanna be a hacker?

Why Legal Experts Say It's Okay To Kill A Civilian Hacker In Cyber Warfare

And why their reasoning is not all that surprising

By Kelsey D. AthertonPosted 03.21.2013 at 4:30 pm11 Comments

Arrest? No longer the worst consequence of cyber attacks. wikimedia commons

Cyberspace makes for a strange battlefield. Attacks are launched from offices, combatants fight with keystrokes, and the targets are usually just information, financial data, and trade secrets. For the vast majority of cyber attacks, that is as big as the threat will be. The biggest exception: cyber attacks that become part of a larger war. When that happens, according to a set of proposed international rules commissioned by NATO and written in conjunction with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the US Cyber Command, even civilian hackers participating in the conflict can be targeted. By bombs and bullets.

That has generated lots of panicky headlines across the web, as you might imagine. The document, called the "Tallinn Manual on the International Law Applicable to Cyber Warfare", was written by 20 legal scholars and practitioners, and represents those experts' best reasoning at how current international law applies to cyber war. It covers everything from how to avoid civilian casualties to who's considered a combatant in a court of law. Here's the part folks are really riled up about:

Civilians are not prohibited from directly participating in cyber operations amounting to hostilities, but forfeit their protection from attacks for such time as they so participate.

That's legalese, and the sentences almost reads better backwards, so here it is in plain talk: Civilians, normally off-limits as targets in war, stop being off limits if they engage in cyber attacks. This rule explicitly carves out an exception to Geneva Convention rules against targeting civilians, noting that civilians engaged in cyber attacks are participating in the conflict, but hardly proper armed combatants. The Tallinn Manual goes on to specify that these civilians enjoy all the other protections of civilians, except the exemption from targeting.

Okay, great. So what does all this mean?

1. Not much, unless countries are actually at war.
There are circumstances where a cyber attack can constitute an act of war, but those attacks are clearly going to be different from the normal kind of data-targeting cyber attack. To constitute an act of war, the cyber attack probably has to kill someone, or cause a large and obvious infrastructure failure, like shutting down a power grid or breaking dam controls.

2. People who are fighting a war are legal targets in that war.
Perhaps the best way to explain the logic of the proposed rule is to look at drone pilots. Most of them, especially in the Air Force, fly their war machines from bases in the United States, usually the Nevada desert. Yet they are undeniably engaged in the war; it's hard to describe what they do as anything else, and they do so in uniform, meeting the standards of lawful combatants. The Department of Defense has acknowledged that . That means that if someone kills them in war, that person cannot be tried for war crimes.

The proposed rule on civilians engaged in cyber is a lot like that. Granted, these are civilians, not uniformed soldiers, so it's slightly different, but not by a lot. If there is a war on, and it involves civilians committing cyber attacks, those civilians can probably be targeted just as if they were actively fighting the war.

3. This is probably about China.
Last month, the New York Times revealed details about one of the Chinese Army's cyber units, including the unit's likely location in Shanghai. China is at the forefront of cyber attacks right now--an advantage that isn't likely to go away any time soon. To balance that out, and to deter cyber attacks, NATO's best bet is to establish rules where a crippling cyber attack is met with deadly force. The Tallinn rule is part of that.

4. The future of cyber war is just war.
Ultimately, shocking though the headlines might look, they could be just as accurately written as "people who launch deadly attacks in war are legal targets in war." That's not catchy, but it's just as accurate. By interpreting the laws of war for the 21st century, the Tallinn Manual just reinforces the fundamental standard of conflict: if an enemy is trying to kill people, it is okay to use force to stop him. Even if that enemy is a hacker.

"Lord of Tears" an upcoming horror thriller

2013-02-25T23:27:00.000-05:00

Thrills, chills, tension and the spilling of blood. This film will have it all!

Plotline-
Set in the Scottish highlands a man named James Findlay (played by Euan Douglas) must confront his fears and the demons of his past including a menacing presence known only as "The Owl Man" by returning to his childhood home after the death of his mother.

Reviewing the story and trailer, the"Lord of Tears" has that kind of Lovecraft feel to it by way of the protagonist questioning and fighting for sanity. A bit of Fall of the House of Usher with an ancient stalker creature that we only know as " The Owl Man"makes for a great story and film formula. The creators of Lord of Tears share that it is based on ancient legends ( Celtic -the Slender Man and others). Some other research shows that there actually is (allegedly) an "Owl Man" in more modern legend. This just adds to the Lord of Tears creepiness. The film has the mystique that only British horror can have. Often imitated by American horror but never quite hitting that classy scare the hell out of you as opposed the exploitation style of modern U.S. horror cinema.

On seeing pictures of the Owl Man (ie Moloch an ancient evil entity of mythology) it brings to mind the creepiness of Nosferatu with those scary long arms and claws. On top of that add the cold supernatural nature (and stare!) of owls, the creature of the night/silent hunter. There was serious research done and the director even dared travel through the haunt of the alleged Owl Man. Interestingly the film is actually shot where witnesses claim to have seen the creature. Lucky this didn't turn into a Blair Witch Ala The Owl Man real life encounter for the cast and crew! Otherwise this would be a murder investigation instead of a film review!

The film is complete and ready to rock and has a kickstarter to secure release. For anyone that doesn't know, movies cost money to promote and release. Unlike most kickstarters the film is done but they still need the help and funding for final release and will add some extras. You can also check out the Facebook site and show some support for a great film. I for one can't wait to see the final product. Its been awhile since I've seen anything that's got me this excited for quite awhile. -EvS

Cleanskin (2012)

2013-02-20T02:09:00.000-05:00

"Cleanskin"- an intelligence term for an operative that is off the radar and previously unknown to intelligence networks.

I kind of waited out for this movie. My initial impression (without seeing it yet mind you) is that it would be another feel good film for the masses. "Good guy kills terrorists and we can all go home feeling better about the increasing security state" type of film. Well fuck was I wrong (not for the first time, lol) about this one.

A bit of a long movie its not so much action adventure (although it does have enough) but more of a drama. Kind of two parallel stories that intertwine. One story being of a British born Muslim man (played by Abhin Galeya) who gets indoctrinated into the radicalized world of Islam. The other is a story of an Intelligence operative ( played by Sean Bean ) who's lost his wife to a suicide bomber attack and will kill any and all extremists his handlers tell him are a threat.

There's quite a few plot twists and the movie does show a bit more than most action films looking at things in a black and white perspective. You get the feeling throughout the film that both of the main characters are "being played" by their respective sides. Also there are elements in the film reminiscent of the real life Operation Gladio operations. The critics didn't like it but fuck them, any film that makes us a bit uncomfortable with our myth-conceptions is a good one in my books.

It's been out on video for a bit and if your attention span is better than a pet rock and intellect higher than most of the main stay "man fall down stairs ....funny" crowd, you'll be in for a good film. -EvS
