Mat is traditional Cambodia product. The best-known types are made from river reeds, left in their natural blonde colour or dyed in rich jewel tones. The Mekong floodplains are known for their mat-weavers, particularly around Lvea Em district in Kandal Province. Vine mats from the country’s North West are cut from the forest. Mats are one of the few locally-made items that have not been replaced by imports, and are laid out for guests in every Cambodian home. Matting is also an important building material used in making village homes and internal dividing walls.

Cambodian Krama

I took advantage of the holiday last Monday (Ninoy Aquino day) and went pasalubong shopping at the Toul Tompong or the Russian Market. It’s much less crowded during weekdays so Philippine holidays (including Christmas) are the best time to go shopping. Naturally, among the gifts I bought were dozens of kramas, for isn’t this colorful checkered scarf a national symbol of Cambodia, along with the great Angkor Wat itself? Just check out these beauties I bought:

These handwoven cotton scarves are worn by the rural Khmers (Cambodian people) as well as those in cities. The Khmers use it for almost anything: scarves and shawls to protect from the sun, wind, and dust; slung around the waist like tapis (especially when they take a bath in the river, then they can also use the kramas as towels); as baby carriers; as headdresses; table runners; placed on chairs to dress them up during important occasions like weddings and birthdays; as pillow covers; as picnic blankets… I could go on and on.
It is also famous among tourists who use it to protect themselves from the hot Cambodian sun and from the dust. I’m not sure but I think I see the reporter Abner Mercado always sporting a krama whenever he’s on TV.
I remember we gave Sis Bride two kramas a few years ago and she would wear it in her office in Manhattan. She said that all her officemates loved it and thought that it came from Hermes in Paris. Hahaha! It just came from a cheap market in Phnom Penh! The price? I’m not telling or the recipients of my pasalubongs would find out that I’m kuripot.
Myself, I use it to cover my neck at night (I get sick when my neck gets cold), as a shawl (lighter than carrying a jacket), and at home cover my shoes in my shoe shelf:

Besides the different colored kramas, I also bought twenty red kramas for my friend who said he wanted like the ones the Khmer Rouge soldiers wore. FYI Khmer Rouge, which literally means red Cambodians, are the communist Cambodians who were allegedly responsible for the genocide in the country in the 1970s. This is part of their uniform:

Budget Hotels (Hostels)

One of the advantages of budget hostels is that they are often run by Cambodian families and not multi-national corporations. This means that you get very personalized and friendly service in many cases as well as excellent tips and travel advice from Siem Reap residents.

You will find that although the budget Siem Reap hotels are cheap, they offer all the basic services that a budget traveler to Asia might want: hot showers, clean rooms, cable TV and Internet access. Although the décor in these budget hotels is simple, they are almost always very clean.

Many hostels and guesthouses have restaurants and tourist desks attached and they will almost certainly be able to put you onto a tuk-tuk driver who can show you around town and the ruins.

One of the disadvantages that you may experience upon arrival in Siem Reap, as in many other Asian cities, is the old commission trap. Many tuk-tuk drivers and taxi drivers get commissions for taking you certain budget guesthouses. Sometimes you may have trouble managing to get to the guesthouse you want as the driver tries to insist on taking you via 15 different commission paying hostels.

Many of the family run guesthouses are charming and the staff friendly and helpful, one of the disadvantages is that the quality of service can be erratic. To avoid an accommodation nightmare do your research and talk to other travelers to find out which hostels and guesthouses have the best reputation. High end accommodation, while more expensive, will certainly be of high quality and standard.

Siem Reap Tourism industry will definitely not be the same without Angkor Wat and its other temples. But you can only see so many temples without getting cross eyed!

Sooner or later, you'll be looking for other things to do around town.

Not to worry, because there are a lot of non-temple activities available thanks to the booming Siem Reap tourism industry. So let's see what they provide.

They're roughly divided into three categories:

Non-temple activities - Everything but temples.
Museums - No, not as boring as you thought. Some are interesting.
Shopping! - Places to spend your money.

Non-temple Activities

These activities are great ways to see more of Cambodia and prevent (or cure) temple burn out. They can be easily done between your temple visits because most of them are around town.

Apsara Dance and Dinner Show - see the temple carvings of Apsara dancers come to life. There are lots of places to choose from, but Angkor Village is one.
Spend a Day in a Cambodian Village - an unusual look into Cambodian village life. Be a Cambodian for one day!
Visit Social Foundations and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) - see what kind of projects they are currently working on. Here is the website for Trailblazer whose project is a water filtering system.
Dirt Bike Motor Tour - roam around the countryside with your own bike. It provides a different view of Cambodia. Website
Bicycle Around Siem Reap - A great way to get to know the town, and one that is pretty easy due to the flat terrain. Most bicycles are available for rent though the hotel or hostels. Crocodile Farm - Cambodians sure do have lots of crocodiles. They're fun to watch, but they smell bad!
Horseback Riding - ride to the lesser known temples around town. You can choose between a one hour trip to a half day or even an all day trip. Website

Visit a Mosque in Siem Reap - get a glimpse of the small Muslim community in Siem Reap and visit the mosque school there.

Museums

It looks like Cambodia is getting so popular that the Siem Reap tourism board decided to make an upscale Angkor museum. The Landmine museum is also great, though small and a little bit out of the way.

Angkor National Museum - just opened in late 2007 so it's all posh and fancy. You'll see many artifacts here.

Shopping

Who doesn't like this particular Siem Reap tourist attraction?
Haggling is alive and well at traditional markets. You may want to shop around and compare prices because they all carry similar stuff. The Siem Reap tourism business seems to be growing because they recently opened up a new night market.

Central Market - the market for souvenirs and Cambodian trinkets. Best prices.

One of Siem Reap tourism leading industries: Artisans d'Angkor silk

Old Market - medium sized market selling clothes and souvenirs. Okay prices.
Night Market - geared towards tourists. Stays open until midnight. Highest prices. Website
Artisans d'Angkor - the leading Cambodian silk company. Unbelievably gorgeous stuff, but expect Western 'prices,' and no haggling. Website
Boutique shoppes around the Old Market area - from arts and crafts, to silk clothes and trinkets. These small shops are fun to visit and have unique items.

So In Short...

There you have it, a list of Siem Reap attractions and activities to get you started. There are so many things to do that you won't want to leave!
Who knew that there are so many Cambodia attractions in and near Siem Reap?
And I use the term attractions loosely, becuase sometimes you will be the only tourist! Considering that Cambodia is visited by millions and millions of people, getting a temple to yourself is an unbelievable treat.

Holiday in Cambodia The Must See and Must Do List

1. Visit one of the river villages

You have at least 3 to choose from (or all 3 to go to): Chong Khneas (closest, very touristy, a floating village), Kampung Phluk (midway, not yet highly visited, a stilted village), and Kampung Khleang (the farthest, little tourist, a floating village).
We went to Kampung Phluk, and it was an amazing site to behold. It is a large village on the river, where houses are built on bamboo stilts. These stilts reach 10 meters high during the rainy season, and lowered down to 1 -2 meters during the dry season.
Kampung Phluk is about half a day's worth of activities, approximately 2 hours away from Siem Reap, and definitely worth the trip. A great must see for a holiday in Cambodia.

2. Visit the Beng Melea temple

Even if you're templed out, brace yourself for one more temple because you will thank yourself for it. This is the one place where you can literally climb the temple ruins, face your fear of heights, and wonder if you'll slip and break your leg while in the boonies (just kidding, ... or not?).
The temple is run over by plants (tree roots and algae everywhere), it is in ruins with falling walls and piling stone blocks.
BUT, you will get to see and feel that magical quality of a truly ancient temple, even more so than a morning exploration of Ta Prohm. Tourists are scarce, the jungle is quiet, and you will have the place for yourself.
Do not wait, though. This Angkor temple is the best kept secret of Cambodia, and soon it may very well be overrun by tourists. A must see and do for a holiday in Cambodia.

3. Visit Ta Prohm temple in the early morning

Ta Prohm in the morning is magical. It's unbelievable!
This costs you only $5 for the tuktuk rental, and the willingness to wake up before sunrise.
Plan to be there before 6, and then just the enjoy your walk through the temple as the morning unfolds, and watch the sunlight streaming down the tree leaves while everything else is still silent.
This is the place where the trees, not the temple, are the attraction.
Why in the morning? Hardly any tourist, unbelievable photo ops, and some peace and quiet.
Another must see and do for a holiday in Cambodia.

4. See the sunset from the top of Phnom Bakheng temple

Some people call this a tourist trap. Well, yes and no, it depends how you look at it. But either way, Phnom Bakheng (Bakheng Hill) is still an amazing place to see the Angkor Wat sunset.
Although this temple is the default choice for an Angkor Wat sunset, you won't see the sunset with Angkor Wat in the foreground.
You will, however, see the sunset from an the top of ancient temple (Phnom Bakheng is older than Angkor Wat by 200 some years), plus other amazing views that you can only see from being at the top.
This place is tremendously popular, that you will be surrounded by fellow tourists when hiking up the hill, watching the sunset, going down the narrow stairs, and finally hiking back down.
It could be so crowded, that you even have to guard your sitting spot. In this case, being part of the tourist stampede is as interesting as the sunset watching itself. I still very much recommend it!

5. Spend a day in a Cambodian village

We went on a tour called "A Day In A Life", and it was a blast!
We drove an ox cart, worked in the farm field, planted corn and cucumber, had lunch with a Cambodian family, taught children some English in their village school, and went to the city dam where Cambodian relax.
That was a very tiring day at the Cambodian village, but there's nothing like it. Another must see and do for a holiday in Cambodia.

So in short...

We had so much fun with these activities in Cambodia that are on my Cambodia must see/do list. If you have a limited time and can't see or do them all, I recommend the sunset and Ta Prohm visit, because they are easy to do even if you only have a day.
If you can stay longer though, and go to some more places, you'll find out that Cambodia is more than just the Angkor Wat. There are many sites out there that are worth seeing, and a holiday in Cambodia will be more memorable if you also visit the non-Angkor-Wat temple sites.

Volunteer in Cambodia List of NGOs, resources and tips

If you want to volunteer in Cambodia while visiting Angkor Wat, you have plenty of opportunity to do so.

There are numerous NGO’s in Siem Reap if you’re interested in doing a volunteer vacation, and most would be glad if you can help them out by volunteering your time, or by giving some donation or contribution.

Many who visit this town realize quickly that although the tourism industry is booming, not everyone is getting the benefit from it.

Volunteering for one day or even a few hours will let you help the less fortunate people (of which most of them are children). Plus, it will also let you see a glimpse of the life behind the tourism world.

But it’s somewhat tricky to find a legitimate organization through online research. How do you determine whether the organization is a valid one, and really benefits the people they claim to help? Should you join a large international organization, or a small local one? If you're volunteering for an extended period of time, should you choose a paid volunteering program, or arrange everything yourself?

To help you answer these questions, there are several resources that you can look into prior to coming to volunteer in Cambodia.

This way, you’ll find out which organizations match your interest the most, and could use your skills most effectively. By ensuring a good fit, you get the satisfaction that you've helped as much as you can, while the NGOs and its people benefit by being helped in the most effective way.

You can contact each organization for possible volunteering opportunities, and details such as whether you’d like to volunteer for a few hours, weeks, or maybe even months.

Volunteering can be a life-changing experience, and it usually is, no matter what you end up doing. However, it is still worth it to find NGOs that fit your values and interest the most, so you know that your help is going towards the most appropriate need, and provide benefit to all.

At the very least, it is helpful to know what you’ll be doing when you volunteer, so that you can come prepared, and be ready to contribute as much as you can.

When you search for Cambodia tour on Google, you will get lots and lots of results.

And for the most part, a lot of what you'll find will be generic ho hum tours that actually make Cambodia look boring. What a crime! What's more, they're costly. A two-day Cambodian tour package in Siem Reap could cost $200 or more.
Now, if you have the means then go for it. But I think one of the reasons people visit the Asian region is because Asia is cheap. Cheap compared to Western countries that is.
So if you spend big money on tours then that point is completely lost isn't it?
But do not worry. There are other ways to go on tours, have great experiences, visit interesting places, and still pay a reasonable price! How you ask? By going on day trip tours my friend.

This is the most popular tour out there and for good reason. The Angkor Wat temple alone is a legitimate reason to visit Cambodia, but this tour includes other great sites as well.

During the wet season when the water level is high, villagers adapt by raising their stilted houses as high as 10 meters to prevent them from being flooded. You can see how they base their livelihood on the rising and falling of the Tonle Sap lake by fishing and shrimp harvesting.

Kampung Khleang, A Floating Village

This is the farthest river village from Siem Reap, which means there are hardly any visitors. Like Kampung Phluk, Kampung Khleang has for the most part remained the same as it has always been.

Beng Melea, Temple Ruins In The Jungle

A Day in a Cambodian village

Amok Restaurant on Pub Street's Passage
If this is your first time trying Cambodian food? Why not start with amok, their national dish?

This coconut based 'curry' dish is flavorful without being too strong and is familiar enough to many taste buds. The perfect choice for a first time encounter with Cambodian food.

With its corner location, this Cambodian restaurant is probably the most prominent in Pub Street. You can enjoy your meal on the balcony upstairs, that way you have a great view of the scenery below.

Le Tigre de Papier (The Paper Tiger) is one of those cute restaurants in Siem Reap. It has good food, free internet, free Wi-Fi, fast service, book exchange, and a cooking class. What more can you ask for?

This restaurant has a relaxing view, great service, good food, and comfortable surroundings. I'd go here again in a heartbeat. I think this is one of the nicer Siem Reap restaurants.

One of Siem Reap's restaurants was dubbed as the restaurant with Best Value for Money in 2006, and that is Curry Walla on Sivatha Blvd. I decided to try it based on that claim alone. It turns out the food is good; there's fast, free internet; and they do delivery also. See a page of the menu here.

Looking for a vegetarian restaurant in Siem Reap? Chamkar is one of them, and it's easily one of the best restaurants I've tried in town. The food was simply delicious! Whether or not you're a vegetarian, don't miss trying out this restaurant. They serve Cambodian food here, but I think it'll suit most tastebuds.

How to get around town...

Siem Reap is a small town. You can walk around the downtown area and still cover a lot of ground.

That said, there are several choices of transportation to get around this town. Especially useful when you're trying to visit the Angkor temples, whether near or far.

Bicycle

Since Siem Reap's terrain is pretty much flat, it's is easy to cruise around with bicycles. You can even go to Angkor Wat using bicycles, because although that's rather far, it is still doable. I personally think bicycle is the way to go for getting around town (once you get over the traffic quirks here).
You can rent a bike easily from your hotel or guesthouse. There are also many small mom and pop places that rent out bicycles. If you see several bicylces lined up by the street or major roads, you can be sure they are for rent.
The rate ranges from $1 - $2 per day, and choices vary, from a proper mountain bike with speeds, to the regular cruising bikes. They will also give you the bike lock when you rent, so you can wander around without worrying about the bike.
There is charity organization that rents out bicycles through guesthouses for $2/day. The proceed will be used to aid projects for the rural areas. You can find out more about The White Bicycles here.

Moto (Motorcycle)

Somehow, in Siem Reap foreigners aren't allowed to rent motorcycle and drive it themselves. So the next best choice is to rent one and hop on behind the driver. No helmet is provided, so hop on with that risk in mind.
If you're a solo traveler, moto would be good choice. It's cheaper than tuktuk, and faster as well. The going rate is between $6 - $8 per day.
PS. Although theoretically foreigners are not allowed to rent motorcycles, there is a tour company that does that. You can find out about dirt biking from Hidden Cambodia Adventure tours.

Tuktuk

By far the most popular choice of Siem Reap and Angkor transportation.
A tuktuk is a motorcycle pulling a hooded carriage. Some can fit only 2, some others up to 4 (or more if you can squeeze yourselves in).
It is comfortable method for exploring the area. The cushion is comfortable, you can put your feet up if you're really tired, and lean back and just enjoy the sights. The hood is also a big plus, because it protects you from the hot sun or the pouring rain.
Some tuktuks also have plastic 'doors' and 'windows'. Most of the time they are rolled up to keep them out of the way, and pulled down only when necessary. The plastic barrier comes in several sections, but they all zip up together nicely.
This feature could be particularly useful when it's raining outside or if you find the wind and dust are just too much.
Tuktuks usually cost $10 - $13 per day, and drivers usually charge few dollars more for longer distances. For a short ride to town, it' usually 2000 Riel - $1 per ride.
Also, you won't have a hard time finding an empty tuktuk. Tuktuk drivers fully anticipate Siem Reap tourism to increase, so their number seems to increase as well. Some even have a website that you can book in advance, like Mr Pik Savuth at Angkor Tuktuk, or Mr. Sotheara, at Angkorwat Driver.

Taxi, Car or Van

You can also rent a car or a van to get around. Although they are a bit of an overkill for short distances, I wholeheartedly love them for long distances.
If you plan to go to Phnom Kulen, Kbal Spean, Banteay Srei or Beng Mealea, you might want to use a car or a van. Those Angkor temples are rather far for a tuktuk ride, and the roads aren't exactly tuktuk friendly, ie. bumpy roads and dust particles flying around.
A car /van should cost $20 - $30 per day, depending on the distance. At this point it helps if you can find other people to share the ride.

So In Short...

Getting around Siem Reap is tremendously easy. Traffic isn't so bad either, merely regular slowing downs and stops at the lights.
It is still such a small town, that you can get from point A to point B in five minutes, and reach faraway Angkor temples without traffic. There is no stress at all in regards to traffic, but be forewarned that sometimes drivers go around a bit recklessly. This could look a bit alarming, but since all drivers are used to driving style, it seems they get around just fine.

Breakdown by location and features

The Angkor Archeological Park is a huge place. It has more than 40 major temples within the park, and many others outside it.

Some of them, like Banteay Srei and the Rolous group, receive regular visit from visitors.

But since it's so large and spread out, how are you to determine which ones to visit?

Here you’ll be able to see how they are grouped together, and get to know a little bit how they are laid out.

This could help you save time in planning your visit.

Angkor Wat - This is THE temple to visit. Consider yourself never having been to Cambodia if you did not stop by here. It is the largest religious monument in the world, and it has so many interesting things in it. You'll probably need to allow at least a couple of hours here.
Angkor Thom - This is a large temple complex near Angkorwat. It has several temples within its gates, and is probably one of the most interesting areas to visit. Most of the temples are located right in the center of the complex, making it easy to go from one temple to the next. This area will also take quite a bit of your time.

Nearby Temples (Temples just outside the Angkor Thom complex) - Several other temples in the area are located just outside the Angkor Thom gates. Temples like Ta Prohm and Phnom Bakheng are some of the popular ones. Preah Khan is also not to be missed.
Faraway Temples - These temples are located outside the park, but some of them are worth seeing. Banteay Srei, Beng Mealea, and Kbal Spean, are some of the temples that have unique characteristics to them.
Rolous Group Temples - Rolous group is also located outside the temple Park, and it used to be the capital city for one of the old Khmer kings. It has 3 temples in the area, with Bakong temple as the highlight.

So those are basically the temples that are doable as day trips from Siem Reap. But if you’d like to break them down more, you can. These temples below are also from the above temples, but grouped according to their own specific features.

Temples with unique features

Baray Temples - Baray means reservoir, and these are the temples that are located in the middle of the manmade lake. All but one of those lakes has completely dried up, but it’s interesting to visit them nonetheless.
Hill Temples - Some of the Ankor temples are built on top of the hill. Phnom Bakheng is probably the most popular. These temples, because they’re located high up, usually provides a great view of the surrounding area.
Pyramid Temples - If you like climbing the temple stairs, and some of them are very steep, these are the temples to visit. Climbing up to also gives you a great view of the landscape below. Some temples go up 20 meter high and more from the ground.
Sunrise Temples - Angkorwat is popular for sunrise, but if you’re looking to know what other temples that provide a great sunrise experience, here are some of them. Just make sure you set that alarm clock correctly, because if you're late, you'll miss the dawn breaking, which is the best part of it.

Sunset Temples - As it is with sunrise, some temples are also a great place for viewing the sunset. Everybody knows Phnom Bakheng is the default choice for sunset viewing, but if you’d like to try something different, try some of these temples.

So in short…

There are so many temples in Angkor Archeological Park, that it would take multiple visits to see them all.

If you only have a limited time, planning your visit in advance is necessary. That way you can tailor your visit according to your wants and interests, instead of just going to temples that everybody goes to.

This will also determine what kind of pass you'll get, the 1 day, 3 day, or 7 day pass.

A 1 day pass is really too short to for you to take in the temples and enjoy them. But if 1 day is all you have, then make sure you get the pass the day before, and squeeze-in that free sunset visit.

A 3 day pass will let you see most of the temples, and if you want, all of them. But seeing all in 3 days, especially for first time visitors, will no doubt will leave you feeling heavily templed out. By the time you reach day 2.1, you're going to start hating the temples and lose interest in them.

A 7 day pass is a good one, but it's probably a little bit too much for first-time visitors and casual travelers who don't have vested interest in the temples. The pass also might not get used for some of the days, which is kind of a waste.

So from all the above choices, a 3 day pass seems to be the ideal one for most people. Just don't try to do all of the temples, though. Take it slowly, enjoy them, and if you miss some temples because you're too 'slow', that's okay. You can always save them for your next visit!

A Tour in Pictures

Most people go to Cambodia to see the Angkor Wat temple, and rightly so.

There are many beautiful pictures of Angkor out there, and for most of us it was one of those pictures that inspired us to visit Angkor Wat.

But those pictures only show you how Angkor looks from the outside.
Have you seen the inside of the Angkor Wat temple? Have you seen the detailed bas-relief and decorations that adorn almost every wall? Or the steep staircase that has been made even more precarious by age? Have you seen how the world looks from Angkor Wat after you climb those deadly stairs?
If you haven't, I'd like to take you on a little visual 'tour.'

The Entrance to Angkor Wat

First, you'll cross the moat to get into the temple complex. The moat will hold more water in the wet season than in the dry one. The excitement starts here, and you'll no doubt start taking pictures if you have your camera on at this point.

As you enter the main causeway and start the long walk to the main temple, feast your eyes on the sight of the imposing structure. Historians have decided that Angkor Wat is both a temple and a mausoleum. Most visitors will not debate that much, because just enjoying the sight is enough.
Symmetry has been long prized as one of Angkor's great features. Walking the causeway is one of the best times to appreciate it.

The Famous Angkor Wat Reflecting Pools

You'll shortly see the reflecting pools where some of the most beautiful Angkor Wat pictures were taken. The pools make Angkor Wat even more interesting to photograph, because you then have the addition of natural symmetry.

The pool is usually completely filled with water during the wet season, and you can take some great pictures. It is only partially filled during the dry season, so mirror images are harder to come by. For example:

Passing the pools, you'll then step onto the Cruciform terrace. The crucifix shape isn't that obvious unless viewed from above. Below, on your left and right sides, you'll also see two 'smaller' buildings. These are the two libraries (symmetry again, you see?).

Inside the Gallery of 1,000 Buddhas (Preah Pean)

When you first enter the temple, you'll immediately see the Gallery of a Thousand Buddhas (Preah Pean).

As the name suggests, this area used to have hundreds of Buddha images. Now only remnants remain as some were removed and others stolen. There are 4 'pools' within the cloister, but none of them are filled with water any longer.

On the pillars, you'll see inscriptions of people's good deeds. Most of them are written in Khmer, but some are also written in Japanese or Burmese.

Standing within the cloister is a great experience. Your eyes will be busy taking in every detail - the size of the enclosure, the many Apsara dancer figures, the airiness and ancient feeling. Being under the roof where it's shady and cool, you can see how bright the Cambodian sun is shining.
The contrast made by the bright stones and sculptures under the direct sun, and the calm, still ones inside is indescribable.

There's a large 'Buddha' statue opposite the gallery entrance, towards the end. The statue is actually Vishnu, the Hindu God, dressed as Buddha. Many people come to pray and give their offerings while visiting the Angkor Wat temple.
It reminds you once again what the temple is about. It was a religious structure then, and it is still one now, though maybe not on the scale it used to be.

When you are done taking in the sights, it's time to move into the central courtyard where the main towers are.

As you emerge from the hallway, you'll be greeted with the grand sight of the towers.

Standing on the 1st level, looking up at the towers on the 2nd level.

You are now standing on the second level of the temple (the Thousand Buddha Gallery is on the first). The third and final level is located in the middle of these second-level towers.
It is a great idea to spend some time on this level. Some people just sit at the ledge and take in the sights of the main towers. It is also a good place to rest after the long walk, especially if the sun is particularly hot that day.
When you are 'done' with the courtyard and ready to go up, be careful climbing the steep stairs to the third level. It was deliberately designed to be steep to illustrate how reaching the heavens is not an easy task.

There have been casualties before on these steps, so the Apsara authority placed some metal stairs with railings on the other side of the courtyard. Don't think less of yourself if you use these stairs, because safety really comes first.

Top Level of Angkor Wat

After your climb up the stairs, you'll finally arrive at the top level. Here you'll be able to enjoy some really great views, because you're now 50 meters from the ground.
There are many spots to just sit and take in the moment of being at the top of Angkor Wat.

But sooner or later you must. Later is better.

Going Down the Stairs

Another reason to linger longer at the top is that it's better to limit your exposure to these deadly steps. Going down is even scarier than going up.

But if you think it's a cakewalk after your first try, then of course no one is going to stop you. Except maybe this sign that's posted several places throughout the temple.

Where to Go Next?

After coming down from the top (hopefully safely), you are by no means finished with the temple. Be prepared to be awed by the bas-relief on the outer walls. The details and the magnitude of it will overwhelm you to the point that you will remember very little of what you saw after the whole affair is complete.
Once you've marveled at the detailed carvings, you can take a walk on the grounds and venture into lesser known areas, areas such as the monastery, the south causeways, and the libraries.

Angkor Thom Temples

Great Angkor or Great City

The Angkor Thom complex has an area that is much larger than the Angkor Wat complex. But unlike Angkor Wat, it houses several 'smaller' temples instead of just one.

This ancient city complex literally translates to "Great Angkor" or "Great City", and it certainly lives up to its name (Angkor = great, Thom = city).
It's a huge temple complex with 5 elaborate entrance gates (gopuras). On each side, there are 54 demon statues (on the left) and 54 god statues (on the right). The demons and gods are all pulling a serpent, so it's similar to the bas relief scene at Angkor Wat's gallery.
The complex also has a moat surrounding its outer walls; it's 100 meters wide, and 12 km long. Here, the moats aren't as full as Angkor Wat. In some sections, only a small amount of water remains. In the dry season, you can sometimes see cows grazing, kids playing, or even residents farming. Right there on the moat.

There are people who actually live within the gates of Angkor Thom, and most of them are probably the descendants of the ancient Khmer people. There are also several Wats (Buddhist temples) inside, two of them are just across from the Bayon temple. These are active Wats, and you'll often see monks, people visiting the Wats, and maybe even some religious ceremonies.

The temples within Angkor Thom are probably some of the most interesting ones to visit. They're rather easy to visit also, because most of them are located in the center and built close to one another. It's amazing to see so many temples within a 'small' area, and most of them are a must-see too!

Bayon Bayon temple is located exactly at the center of Angkor Thom. It's right up with Angkor Wat in terms of must-see and popularity. It has a unique architecture of 214 smiling faces on the towers, and of course the bas relief carvings on its outer walls are also very interesting.	Bayon Temple with its 4-faced towers
Baphuon This three-tiered pyramid temple is currently undergoing restoration. However, it has been said many times that when this temple was in prime condition, it must've been one of the greatest temples of Angkor due to its sheer size.	Baphuon with the top almost gone
Phimeanakas Phimeanakas is a three-tiered pyramid temple within the Royal Palace enclosure. It is surrounded by walls five meters high, which are largely still intact and standing. There are pools right behind the temple, and the ancient royals originally used them for ritual washing.	Phimeanakas temple
The Elephant Terrace You guessed it, lots of stone elephants. They're either carved on the walls of the terrace, or as statues on both sides of the stairs. Make sure you get down from the actual Elephant Terrace to enjoy the many elephants carved on the walls.	Elephant carvings all around the temple
Terrace of the Leper King This is actually a misnamed terrace. The "King" is actually Yama the God of Destruction, and the leprosy isn't real. It's moss growing on the statues, causing discoloration on the stones. The Terrace of the Leper King is also the place for enjoying great bas-relief carvings. Prasat Suor Prat This "Temple of the Rope Dancers" with its 12 towers is very picturesque. With all of them lined neatly in a row, 6 on the left, and 6 on the right, one imagines that it would make a great picture. Sadly it's hard to get all of the Prasat Suor Prat in one shot. North Khleang and South Khleang The Khleangs are two similar buildings behind the Prasat Suor Prat towers. They could've been royal palaces, but they look too small to have been so. The North Khleang was built first, and the South followed later.	Inside the North Khleang
Preah Pithu The Preah Pithu group doesn't receive much attention, but this small cluster of temples is a delight! Five Buddhist and Hindu temples, and a terrace, all located very closely to one another. It sure does give a whole new meaning to the phrase Angkor Archeological Park.	5 temples hidden in the jungle

What Transportation To Use
To Get To the Angkor Thom Temples?

Since Angkor Thom is near Angkor Wat, there should be no problem getting around the complex. Your usual transportation choices apply, choices such as bicycle, moto-bike, tuktuk, car, or van.
You can also go on an an elephant ride at this old Angkor City, either at Bayon in the morning or at Phnom Bakheng during the sunset.
In the 1860s, when Angkor was first rediscovered, elephants were the original mode of transportation for Angkor visitors. So if you want to do it old style, ask the elephants to take you around some of these Angkor temples! Click here to read more about temple transportation choices.

Angkor Temples at Roluos Group

The old capital city...

The Angkor temples at Roluos are located about 13 kilometers Southeast of Siem Reap.

There are three main temples there, and they are fondly called the Roluos Group.
Roluos is actually the name of the old city. During the reign of Indravarman I in 877 AD, Roluos was the capital of the Khmer Kingdom.
So it is interesting to see the three temples that are hundreds of years older than the great 'Temple City' (which was built around the early 1100s).
Of the three, the most significant temple is Bakong, and the least is Lolei.

Bakong This temple is the highlight of the Roluos group. It is the largest and most interesting of the three. It is surrounded by a moat, and was one of the first Angkorian temples to use the temple mountain architecture idea. That idea was then used for hundreds of years.	Bakong temple ruins. Photo by K. Preah Ko This funerary temple for Jayavarman II has six towers all built on one platform. The name Preah Ko, Sacred Bull, was taken from the three bull statues around the temple. This temple has some of the better preserved plasterwork on its towers.	Preah Ko temple details. Photo by A. Oswald

What Transportation To Use
To Get To The Roluos Temples?

The most economical means to get to Roluos is by tuktuk. In addition to the regular daily charge of $10 -$13, tuktuk drivers just add a few dollars for a Roluos visit.

Keep in mind the distance, though. While tuktuks are great for short rides, they aren't the most comfortable transportation for 13 km rides. If you use tuktuk, you'll be under constant exposure to wind and dust.

Another option then is to go by car or van. A car costs about $20 per day and a van a little bit more. If you have a group of people, then the charge shouldn't be so bad. Click here to read more about these temple transportation choices.

Nearby Angkor Temples

There are more than 40 major Angkor temples and ruins near Siem Reap. So if you want to go all out on temple visiting you won't soon run out of temples!

All of these temples are easily accessible as they're all located within Angkor Archeological Park.
Ta Prohm, Phnom Bakheng, Banteay Samre, and Preah Khan are some of the more popular temples and they are popular for a reason. So if you cannot visit them all, check out these temples first.

Ta Prohm This temple is enveloped by tree roots in so many places, making it almost impossible to remove the trees without damaging the temples. Make sure you visit this temple in the early morning to feel the magic.	Many temple parts are held up by roots.

Chau Say Tevoda The temple was in disrepair compared to Thommanon. It has now been under renovation for years.
Ta Nei A small, isolated temple. Some of the apsara and carvings are in good condition, although they are deteriorating.
Banteay Prei A small temple built in Bayon style that receives little visitors. The temple is in ruins, and some apasara heads and carvings have been damaged from looting.
Krol Ko Another small temple that receives few visitors, Krol Ko is surrounded by two walls. The central tower is built in Bayon style.
Ta Prohm Kel A small, sandstone tower which probably served as a chapel for one of Jayavarman VII's hospitals.
Spean Thmor This stone bridge is the remains of a bridge that once sat on the side of the river. It shows how the water level has dropped over the centuries and how the river course has changed.
Prasat Thma Bay Kaek The remains of a brick tower. All that is left is the foundation, a bit of terrace, and a door frame.
Prasat Bei Exactly as the name means, towers three, Prasat Bei has three brick towers.

How to Get to These Angkor Temples

You should have no problems visiting the temples listed above as they are all located near Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. Your usual transportation choices apply, choices such as bicycle, motobike, tuktuk, car, or van. Click here to read more about temple transportation choices.
You can access all of these temples with the regular Ankorwat Pass. Although the price of the pass itself is rather steep at $20 for a one-day ticket, it is a very good value if you visit all of the temples listed above.

You can experience the Angkor temples in many different ways!

For example, visiting Angkor Wat in the morning is much different than visiting in the afternoon. The different lighting seems to make the temples change color, and this is particularly clear during sunrise and sunset.

But visiting at different times is just the beginning of getting a unique temple experience. There are several other ways to get up close and personal to the temples.

Here you'll see some ideas on how you can experience your favorite temple differently. Of course, if you have another way to experience the temples, please share it with us and other visitors!

If you don't have a problem waking up early during your vacation, then you're in for a big treat. With the air still a bit chilly and much fewer visitors around, you will able to get much needed personal time with the temple of your choice.

Plus, there’s all those great pictures that you’ll be taking. Considering what a great experience a sunrise at a temple is, waking up in the early morning is not a high price to pay at all.

Here are some of the recommended sunrise temples:

Angkor Wat Temple - Set that alarm clock and get your camera ready. Sunrise at Angkor Wat is where great pictures come from. The best place to get a pretty shot of the temple during sunrise is right in front of the pond. That way you get the temple and its reflection, all in one shot.

Ta Prohm Temple - The sunrise is not the focus of this temple. The magical atmosphere is. With almost no one around and with the giant trees towering above, it's as if you've journeyed back in time to that ancient Angkorian period. Watching the morning unfold at Ta Prohm is just amazing.

Phnom Bakheng - With a view of Ankor Wat and the Western Baray from the top, this is another great place to watch a sunrise. Be sure to factor in the 30+ minute hike to the top, that way you can make sure to get up early enough to catch the sunrise.

Srah Srang - Seeing the sun's reflection in this royal pond could be a great way to start the day. People do not frequent Srah Srang often, so this could provide some time for reflection if you need it.

East Mebon - Roughly a thousand years ago, the view from the top of the temple would be of huge bodies of water. Now the East Mebon water reservoir is completely dry. But with views of the rice fields and villages below, you can be sure that a sunrise at the temple top is still beautiful. East Mebon is a bit father than the other Angkorian temples, so be sure to leave early enough to catch the sunrise.

Sunset temples

What better way to end the day than by enjoying the sunset at an Angkorian temple? It's a great way to just relax and cool down after a busy day of visiting temples.

Here are some of the recommended sunset temples:

Angkor Wat temple - You can spend time waiting for the sunset in many different ways. You can roam around the galleries and see how the Angkor Wat temple bas-relief looks in low light, or see how the sun turns the stones at the second level to a golden color. Then of course there's that sunset shot again, available from the back of the pond.

Phnom Bakheng - With its prime location, Phnom Bakheng is never in need of visitors. The sunset at Phnom Bakheng is so famous that it would seem that all the visitors go to the temple at sunset. If you don't mind the crowd, do not miss this temple. The view from up there is just spectacular.

Pre Rup - This temple positively glows during sunset. Plus, the view from the uppermost level is so soothing, with trees that seem to cover the land as far as the eye can see. This temple is becoming a popular sunset temple, but it is nowhere near Phnom Bakheng's level.

Change your mode of transportation!

You can experience the temples differently just by changing your mode of transportation. By land or by air, by wheels or by animal, it's your choice.

Here are some of the different modes of transportation you could try:

Biking to the temples - Much recommended to those who have a good fitness level. There's nothing like biking through a tree-lined road with views of ancient temples along the way. Click here for tips on biking to Ankor.

Elephant rides at Angkor Thom - This is how visitors got around in the old days, soon after the temple's 'rediscovery.' You can also get a taste of this old mode of transportation by riding your own elephant in Ankor Thom. Rides starts near the South gate, and then the elephant (and the rider in front) will slowly take you to Bayon. Rides are available throughout the day for $10.

Elephant ride to the top of the Phnom Bakheng hill temple - Elephant rides to the top are only available during sunset hours. Rides start at the base and go all the way up, so if you don't feel like hiking you can ask the elephants to take you instead. Once at the top, you'll still have to climb up the temple yourself (the elephant can't help you there ). The sunset ride is $15.

Balloon ride over the temples – Now you can see Angkor Wat from above and get your own aerial photo. And at $15 it won't break your bank. Even though the balloon is tethered to the ground, you’ll rise up to 200 meters and be able to see Angkor-Wat, Angkor Thom, and the Bayon temple. The ride is around 10 minutes long.

Helicopter ride over Angkor Wat – You can now see the Angkor temples using a helicopter. You can even take it to farther temples like Beng Mealea if your pocket is deep enough. Although a helicopter ride is clearly costly, they do have rides starting from $75 with the ride being only 8 minutes long.

Jungle temple

There are temple ruins located in the middle of a wild jungle, but not so wild that you can't visit them. The walk required to reach the temple is a unique way to experience the temple and its surroundings.

Kbal Spean - A 40 minute hike through the Cambodian jungle will take you to a small waterfall and a riverbed carved with 1,000 linggas and several god figures. The hike itself is a great activity, letting you experience Cambodia’s nature in a personal way. I personally think that Kbal Spean is another must-see.

Phnom Kulen – The Kulen mountain is the most sacred site for Cambodians. This is where they go on pilgrimage. It is also one of the very first important sites of the Khmer kingdom. At the top there’s a waterfall that is believed to have healing properties.

So in short...

There are lots of different ways to experience the Ankor temples, from visiting at sunrise, then again at sunset, and biking through. If anything, there are too many options to choose from!

Angkor Wat History

A brief overview of who built what and when

Knowing a little bit about Angkor Wat history is a good thing.

When you're visiting the temples, wouldn't you rather be taking in the sights instead of burying your nose in a guidebook?

Having an idea on the general sequence of Angkor temples and Angkor kings would make temple visits more meaningful.

Here you'll get an idea of who built what, when, where, and also the symbolism behind the temple structures. I'm obviously not an Angkor Wat historian, but here's what I've gathered so far: The Angkorian period started in AD 802 and ended in 1432. It was during this period that all those Angkor temples were built.

Angkor Wat History - Early Years

802-50

Jayavarman II was the founder of the Angkor empire, and he proclaimed himself a devaraja or god king (deva = god, raja = king) possessing similar powers to the Hindu god Shiva. You'll find that this god-king theme was also adopted by his 'successors' throughout Angkor Wat's history.

Jayavarman II built a temple mountain at Phnom Kulen (Kulen Hill/Mountain), and this was where he held his court. He built it on a mountain to mimic Shiva's dwelling place, the mythical Mt. Meru. By setting up his court at the top of the mountain, he was saying that Phnom Kulen was the center of the universe and that he was the king.

To this day, Phnom Kulen is the most sacred site for Cambodians. Later on in history, the court was moved to Rolous.

877-89

Indravarman I is considered to be a usurper and he was also a devaraja. He built the first baray (reservoir), and at Rolous he built the Preah Ko and Bakong temples, earning him a place in Angkor Wat history. These temples were some of the first ones with moats surrounding them. The moats have a religious significance also.
It is said that the mythical Mt. Meru is surrounded by lakes. So you can see the symbolism there.

889-910

Yasovarman I was Indravarman I's son, and during his reign he moved the capital to the Angkor area as we know it now. He built another temple at the previous capital city Rolous, called Lolei. The Phnom Bakheng temple, which is a popular place for viewing sunsets, was also built during his time. Notice that Phnom Bakheng is sitting atop the hill, again showing the symbolism of Shiva's Mt. Meru.

Yasovarman I also built Phnom Krom, Phnom Bok, and that huge Eastern Baray reservoir (7 km by 1.8 km), earning his place in Angkor Wat history.

928-42

Jayavarman IV was another usurper. He took on the power sometime after Yasovarman I's death, and moved the capital city to Koh Ker. He built Koh Ker in 20 years, taking advantage of natural resources around the area and using an army of workers. According to some texts, Koh Ker was a magnificent capital, but sadly very little can be gleaned from the available Angkor Wat history texts.

944-68

Rajendravarman II moved the capital back to Angkor. He built the Eastern Mebon, Pre Rup, and Phimeanakas (you can visit all these because they're located in Angkor). The Eastern Mebon temple was built in the middle of Eastern Baray, so at one time the temple was surrounded by water, fulfilling that Mount Meru symbolism.

Today, the Eastern Baray is completely dry, so the Eastern Mebon temple is very much on a dry land.

968 - 1001

Jayavarman V was Rajendravarman II's son. During his reign, the Ta Keo and Banteay Srei temples were built.
The Banteay Srei temple, in particular, has been hailed as the prettiest of all temples on earth, due to its magnificent and deep detailed carvings. It is also often mentioned as the jewel among all the Angkor temples. Not a small feat when you consider the long span of Angkor Wat history. Interestingly, Banteay Srei was not commissioned by the king, but rather by a Brahman (who could have been Jayavarman V's tutor).

Angkor Wat History - Classical Period

1002-49

Suryavarman I was another usurper, and he expanded the Khmer empire perhaps to its greatest extent.

This was also the beginning of the classical age, which means abundant and productive temple building. At the same time, however, there was a lot of military activity in the Khmer empire, and therefore turmoil.

Suryavarman also played an important role in Angkor Wat history. He is believed to be the promoter of Buddhism in Cambodia. Although he adopted the god-king status, Buddhism and Buddhist sculptures made their way into the Angkor city. Today, 97% of Cambodians are Buddhist.

Not much is known about what Suryavarman I built, because none of his buildings have survived.

1049-65

Udayadityavarman II (what a mouthful!) was the son or Suryavarman I. He expanded the empire even more and built Baphuon and Western Mebon, which is located in the middle of Western Baray. Who built Western Baray, the largest baray of them all (8km by 2.3km)? I don't see it stated plainly, but it should be Udayadityavarman, since the Western Baray was built roughly 150 years after the Eastern one.

Today, the Western Baray still holds huge volumes of water.

1112-52 (The period when Angkor Wat was built)

Suryavarman II was the king responsible for beautiful Beng Melea and the grand Angkor Wat temple, which he dedicated solely to the Hindu god Vishnu. Previous god-kings did not have this special devotion that he exhibited; they always included other gods as well.

Although the Angkor Wat temple signifies the high achievement of the Khmer people, there were signs of decline. The city was overpopulated, the agriculture could not keep up with demands, and canals had started to dry up.

Supposedly, the construction of Angkor Wat was what caused all these major strains on the empire. Plus, war was still going on, so resources were spread too thin. Nonetheless, Suryavarman II earned his place in Angkor Wat history as the king who built the largest religious structure.

Jayavarman VII took over the reign of the Khmer empire, after it was invaded by the Dai Viet (Vietnamese army). He built Angkor Thom (a humongous temple complex, larger in area size than Angkor Wat), Preah Khan, Banteay Kdei, and the now atmospheric Ta Prohm temple. He also rebuilt other temple complexes like the Banteay Chhmar and the Preah Khan in the Preah Vihear province.
Jayavarman VII also took Buddhism to another level. Instead of continuing the tradition of Hinduism, he adopted the Buddha of Compassion as his patron and built Buddha structures on his temples.
The most noted is Bayon, one of the most famous Angkorian temples, with its 216 four-faced Buddha statues. Angkor Wat history was forever changed by this move, as Hinduism is now but a minority religion in Cambodia.
After his death, the empire steadily went into a decline, and for around a century the state religion was once again Hinduism. This change made its way to the temples, where Buddha figures were defaced and destroyed. The Khmer empire practically ended when the Thais attacked Angkor in 1351 and again in 1431.

Some kings that ruled in between the dates were excluded, because they played smaller roles than the ones above.

So In Short...

I must admit, Angkor Wat history is fascinating and these temples grow on you. The more time you spend among the temples, the more you read about them, and the more you imagine how life was lived during the ancient times, the more you feel that strange lure and magical attraction about them.

Warning: If you spend more than just a casual time at the Angkor temples, and you might start thinking that you need to become an archeologist!

An Angkor Wat map will give you the quickest overview of Angkor Wat and its surrounding area. A picture truly is worth a thousand words. Knowing the big picture in regards to temple locations will also give you a sense of direction when visiting the temples, and that is not a bad thing at all.
Let us start with Angkor Wat itself. This is the Angkor Wat temple, with the moat surrounding it.

And this is the center temple area. The most important ones to see are the amazing eight bas relief galleries, central towers, and the Gallery of 1,000 Buddhas.

And here you can see the Angkor Thom, the Barays (reservoir), and the Rolous group temples. Rolous was once the capital of the Khmer empire.

An aerial map really gives you a sense of the temples' size. Who knew that the large Angkor Wat is 'small' when compared to the others? While the hilltop Phnom Bakheng temple and the 216 Bayon's Buddha faces are within Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm temple and its giant trees are located outside the walls of Angkor Thom.
The beautiful Banteay Srei temple and the Beng Melea jungle temple are off the map. These amazing temples are farther away from the more popular and easily accessible temple clusters, but please do go out of your way to visit these temples, because they are so worth it.

Getting A Cambodia Visa

Where to get it, fees, and procedures...

Cambodian government has made it extremely easy for tourists to get a Cambodia Visa. How easy? Super e-Visa easy.

The process of getting a visa is admittedly one of the less thrilling parts of traveling. But since April 2006, Cambodian tourists have the option of getting their visas online.
This means no more going to local embassies, and no more filling out visa-on-arrival forms at the airport. So convenient!
We used Cambodia e Visa for our trip. From the beginning to end, the process was very easy. Too easy, perhaps.

Getting the Visa

What you would do is go online to the Cambodian visa official application site, fill out a form with your passport information, date of arrival, point of entry, contact info et cetera, and upload a passport photo.
Then, you'll need to pay for the visa application fee ($25). You can do so with a credit card, or Paypal (gasp!).
We chose Paypal, because it was easier.
The whole cambodia visa application process took about 15 - 20 minutes. It was a really simple, no sweat process. It gotten better, though.
At 11:41 am that morning, I finished the application and submitted it. At 2:24 pm on the same day, I received the approved visa application in my email, with both visas attached as PDF files, ready to be printed.
I, was, wowed!
To date, I still think that it was one of the best customer service I've ever had.
After this, you'll only need to print 2 copies of it.
One is for the arrival entry, the other for departure.
Also, it comes in color, but you can print it in black and white.
When you arrive, you can go through the immigration on a special line, separate from the 'normal' visa queue. Cambodia really outdoes herself in this department.

Email From E-Visa Office

You'll receive an email from Cambodia's e-visa department, and it contains instructions about what to do with your visa. It's pretty straightforward, just make sure you print 2 copies, and queue in the right line.

Unfortunately, e-Visa is only for tourists. Business travelers and others still need to go the old route. Also, it is $5 more than the normal on arrival visa fee (normal fee is $20). Cambodia government charges the additional as the processing fee.
My suggestion? Take the electronic Cambodia Visa if you need to expedite the immigration line. If not, save the additional $5 and go the normal route. If you need more information, their website I've linked above is surprisingly helpful and clear. A rarity for a government site.

The Cambodian currency is called Riel.

However, most Cambodians use US dollars as well as their own currency. Even the littlest shops quote prices in US dollars. 1 US dollar is equal to 4,000 Riels (or very close to it, click to see the current currency exchange rate). This was the case during our trip, and apparently this was the case in the 1980s.

But now, due to price increases, some bigger shops have increased the Riel's exchange rate, making it something like 4,200 Riel to 1 US dollar. This is for bigger shops only. The smaller ones still hold the same 4,000 Riel to 1 US dollar rate, probably because it's easier to count the change with a round number. In border cities, merchants will also accept the Thai Baht in addition to the US dollar.

The Riel is still widely used though, especially in remote and non-touristy areas, but sellers in the city are well stocked with both currencies. When you shop you can ask for the change in dollars. If they don't have enough dollars, or if your change is something like $0.50, well, then Riel it is (they don't use US coins).
On an interesting note, even the ATMs in Siem Reap spit out money in US dollar denominations. I just found that fascinating.

The Cambodian Riel in the Past

When you have conversations with the Khmers, you'll keep on hearing them say that Cambodian money is worth very little, or even that it's worthless.
The Cambodian people's notion of the 'worthless' Riel seems to come from the fact that not so long ago, during the civil war, the Riel really was worthless.
During the Pol Pot regime, the use of money was abolished and you could see Riel on the street with nobody caring to pick the money up. There were no shops and no buying or selling activities. Only work.
When the regime ended, the government had to reintroduce Riel into the economy as the currency of Cambodia.

Cambodian People and Banks

On another interesting note, our tour guide also said that Cambodian people do not trust banks.
They keep their money themselves (under the mattress?), and save for big money purchases. They don't ask the banks for credit. Everything, including houses, motorbikes, and bicycles, must be paid in cash.
Can you imagine? Again, this distrust probably originated back to the Pol Pot regime. When the economy is shot, banks are crippled, the Cambodian currency depreciates, and the people's money is gone.

The seasons, when to go, what to expect...

The Cambodia climate is a tropical monsoon climate. So the whole year is basically consisted of two seasons.

The monsoon or the rainy season, which is from May - November.

And the dry season, which is from November - April.

During the rainy season, the water level of the great Tonle Sap lake rises up, flooding vast amount of areas.

During the dry season, the water level goes down, drying up roads and fields, revealing what previously were completely submerged under water.

Which time is best for visiting? That all depends on what you're looking for.

Cambodia climate: Siem Reap during the monsoon season

Many have said that the Angkor Wat temple looks its best and most photogenic during the monsoon season.
During this time, all the vegetations come to life, the temple pond is full, giving you a great reflection of Angkor Wat. The moss covered stones on the temples and the jungle gives a magical aura of ancient times.
The wet season is when there's an abundant opportunity for taking beautiful pictures.
The relatively cool Cambodia weather during the wet season also makes it enjoyable for temple exploring. You less likely to be easily tired while walking the temples. However, at times you'll have to deal with overcast skies and rain, which could limit your activities somewhat.

Cambodia climate: Siem Reap during the dry season

If Angkor Wat pictures during the wet season look green and soothing, during the dry season they look golden and strong. The contrast of pictures make it great reason to visit Cambodia at both seasons.
During the dry season, Siem Reap is also hot, hot, and hot. Dusty, too.
Do not even contemplate going out without sunscreen, or a hat, or some type of shades while exploring the temples, because you'll get sunburned in no time.
While the dry season is somewhat a guarantee for sun filled days, which provides you with greater control for planning activities, the lack of rain sometimes makes it more difficult for road travel.
Compared to the really bad ones,
below is a very good road
Since some of the road have been submerged under water for half a year, when the water dries up, the result is unbelievably bad road.
Take for example the road to Kampung Phluk. During the wet season, 80% of the trip can be very conveniently covered by boat.
But during the dry season, some areas of the river completely dries up, making boats inoperable. People then switch to other forms of transportation, usually bicycles, motorcycles and mini vans.
I think visiting during the dry season is unique, because you get to see how the Cambodians are very much affected by the amount of rain they get.
Road and fields that previously were under water
When I saw the horrible road condition, the rice paddy fields that only few months ago were submerged under water, and how throughout all this the Cambodians are very adaptive to the extreme change of lifestyle, it just left me in speechless wonderment.

So which Cambodia weather is better?

There's no clear answer to that question.

Whether you're planning a visit during the wet or dry season, at both times you'll get to see different sides of Cambodia.
And both of them are equally worth seeing!
If you're looking for 'great' weather to plan for lots of activities, Cambodia visit during the dry season is in order.
If you're looking forward to experience the lush greenery that makes the temples magical, and roam the ancient city under a cooler climate, then Cambodia during the wet season is for you.

Cambodian clothing has a rich history and culture.

The nation’s daily and special dresses are central to their way of life, and provide lavish artistry in many settings. Their clothing adds a paintbrush of exquisite color and design to their fertile countryside and cities.

Traditional Cambodian wear

Men and women both slip on the following typical wear: Cambodian men typically wear cotton or silk shirts with short sleeves. They wear cotton trousers as well. Cambodian women customarily wear a sarong which is embellished with silver and gold threading and a sarong. A sarong/sampot is a long fabric piece, which is commonly wrapped around the waist and worn by both men and women in South East Asia.

The sampot is Cambodia’s national clothing. In addition, it is an integral part of the nation’s soul. It has similarities with other countries in the region, but remains a unique part of Cambodian heritage. There are several variations; most of which depend on social class. The sampot measures 5-6 feet long and each end is sewn together. The sampot originated in the Funan Era. In that era, a Khmer king ordered his people to wear the sampot at the behest of Chinese diplomats.

The sampot chang kben is primarily worn by upper and middle class women. It resembles a pant more then a skirt. The sampot chang kben is over 9 feet long and 3 feet wide. It is wrapped around the waist, and pulled from the body. Then, a knot is tied. The knot is drawn between the legs and held by a belt. Nowadays, it is worn by all woman of all classes on special occasions.

The sampot phamuong is another time-honored Cambodian textile. There are 52 colors used in sampot phamuong. 22 needles are used to construct the fabric. Ideally, it has floral and geometrical motifs. Cambodian yellow silk, a prized regional specialty, is used with this clothing article.

The sampot hol is another national cloth which comes in two varieties: one is a wrapping skirt which uses a customary technique, and the other is a twill weave. A twill weave involves a different color on each side of cloth. This weave is unique to Cambodia and is celebrated for its splendor worldwide. The sampot hol dress was influenced by the Indian patola silk cloth. The sampot hol possesses more then 200 patterns using yellow, red, brown, blue, and green. Like the sampot phamuong, the sampot hol’s motifs are gemotric, floral, and animal.

A krama scarf distinguishes Cambodian dress from surrounding countries such as Laos and Vietnam. Checkered kramas are frequently donned underneath the hats worn by farm workers. Krama’s can be used for almost anything, such as baby carriers, decorations, pillow covers, and drying a work day’s sweat. Although primarily a rural resource, urban Cambodians use them as well. You'll see lots of krama being sold at the Old Market or the Central Market.

What should visitors wear?

Visitors to Cambodia should know of the typical dress used in different social circumstances. Just like in other countries, different occasions require appropriate clothing.

At temples no scanty clothing should be worn out of courtesy for devotees. The tourist should also not go shirtless, in shorts, hot pants, or any other offensive attire. When Cambodians attend proper proceedings, like at the temple, they wear formal Cambodian clothing. In addition, they remove their hats and shoes; so remember to do so yourself.

For practical purposes such as traveling through the country, a pair of comfortable walking shoes is necessary because the grounds are irregular in elevation. A hat is helpful in the intense sunlight that permeates the country. Drinking water should be carried as well, because the humid heat would make you suffer without it. Make sure that you get water bottles only, as tap water is not exactly safe, just yet.

So in short...

Cambodian clothing are unique, just like the country itself. It's interesting how you can see the influence of the Chinese in their clothing, which makes the whole Cambodia history interesting and fascinating.

The Khmer Rouge regime

You can’t escape knowing about the Cambodia genocide when visiting the country.

The Khmer Rouge regime was only officially in power from 1975 -1979, but in that short time inflicted deep wounds on Cambodia and its people that will endure for generations to come.

During their time in power the Khmer Rouge, led by Cambodia Pol Pot, affected a Cambodia genocide that left around 1.7 million Cambodians dead: murdered at the hands of a megalomaniac leader.

Pol Pot’s attempts to turn Cambodia into a Maoist communist state and peasant farming community left one quarter of the country’s population dead from over work, starvation and execution. No one in Cambodia was untouched by the Cambodia genocide.

Every single Cambodian citizen lost family members, or was injured in some way by the Khmer Rouge’s influence in the country.

Pol Pot’s rise to power was facilitated by the instability of the Cambodia and Vietnamese region and he gained some popular support from Cambodians who were fed up with being bombed by the Americans who were trying to eradicate the North Vietnamese from Cambodia.

When the US invaded Cambodia to drive out the North Vietnamese, they went deeper into the country and ultimately joined forces with Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge.

In 1975 when the US had withdrawn from Vietnam, Cambodia was left with a government that was riddled with corruption and incompetence and had lost American support and the support of the Cambodian people. Seizing his chance at overthrowing a weak government Pol Pot and his army of Khmer Rouge peasants marched into Phnom Penh on April 17, 1975 and took political control of Cambodia.

Within days of seizing control of the government Pol Pot began his very own “Great Leap Forward” and Cultural Revolution in an attempt to turn Cambodia into a Maoist pastoral society. The Khmer Rouge began to “cleanse” the country of evil threats to Cambodia’s agrarian utopia such as western influences, intellectualism, city life, religion and capitalism.

All foreigners were deported from the country and embassies closed, other languages were banned, newspapers and TV stations were all shut down, money was forbidden, religion banned, education and health care stopped and even parental guardianship was taken away. Cambodia was completely closed off from the rest of the world.

The Killing Fields

One of the most infamous of Pol Pot’s horrific achievements was the Killing Fields of Cambodia. Most of Phnom Penh’s residents were forcibly removed at gunpoint from the city and made to work in the fields as slaves.

The people were worked until they collapsed and died of exhaustion, from disease or starvation. Workers were given only one portion of rice every two days to nourish them while starting the work day at 4am in the fields and not stopping until 10pm at night. They were constantly guarded by soldiers who would kill for even the smallest misdemeanor.

Remains from the Killing Fields

All throughout the country the Khmer Rouge undertook purges to rid the society of any of the old non-Maoist ideals and influences. Under Pol Pot entire groups of Cambodia society were ear-marked for extermination such as Buddhist monks, western educated individuals (despite the fact that Pol Pot had been educated in France), all Khmer Muslims, bureaucrats, large and medium landowners and intellectuals.

The Khmer Rouge also divided Cambodians into three categories and your category decided the relative harshness of your work and the amount of rations you received: individuals with full rights, candidates for full rights and those who had no rights whatsoever.

So in short...

Today people can visit the Killing Fields outside of Phnom Penh, where mass graves have been found. It is a chilling reminder of the tyranny, hardship and suffering that the Cambodians have endured in recent history. The Security Prison 21 (S-21) was a school house used by the Khmer Rouge for torture and executions is today known as Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum.

The museum can be visited in Phnom Penh and in the rooms where tortures and executions took place there is still blood that dried where it splattered years previously. It is estimated that around 17,000 Cambodians were imprisoned at the school, where they were beaten and tortured into naming family and friends and then executed.

These sites are painful and harrowing to visit, but they serve as a constant reminder of the Cambodia genocide and the universal value of freedom and democracy. They are also a testament to the bravery of the Cambodian people.
