for Ghostbuster I was like hmmm... Having known the original Ghostbusters as a kid the change is somewhat refreshing and I hope this different take on the story would be fun to watch.

However, they're not the only ones who will be out on the streets of New York City. THOR or I mean Chris Hemsworth will be playing the new receptionist, and though Annie Potts stayed in the office for the original film, a new photo from Vulture reveals that Hemsworth will at least be able to go outside in the new movie.

The actor initially turned down the role because it was too small of a part, but Feig and co-writer Katie Dippold beefed up the part a little, he ended up coming on board. I wonder how he'll fit in with the dynamic of the new team...

Bye Bye Installous! I'm Sorry Apple Enthusiasts!

Hackulous, perhaps the Internet’s most famous cracked app community, has dramatically closed its doors. The community shut down yesterday but that isn’t the only damage. Apptrackr, the web-based partner index for cracked apps and Installous, the app used by millions to transfer cracked apps to their iDevices, have also been disabled. The operators cite lack of activity for the shutdown but it seems unlikely that’s the only reason.

Although there are plenty of sites specializing in similar things, the Hackulous community is particularly well known among users of jailbroken Apple devices.

Aside from the community forums, Hackulous is known for its direct connections with Apptrakr, a huge web-based index of cracked apps and Installous, a clever piece of software which allows the installation of iOS software found via Apptrakr and elsewhere.

But as of yesterday, Hackulous is officially no more.

“We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down,” the team said in a statement.

“After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well-moderated, despite the devotion of our staff. We’re incredibly thankful for the support we’ve had over the years and hope that new, greater communities blossom out of our absence.”

While the announcement was made on Hackulous, it didn’t mention the fate of either Apptrackr or Installous, the software that relies on Apptrackr to function.

Installous is installed on millions of Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad and was the key way for people to transfer pirate apps to their phones and tablets. However, following the Hackulous announcement the app has been rendered completely non-functional, apparently disabled by the Hackulous team that controlled it.

TorrentFreak tried to contact Dissident, the admin of the projects, for an official statement. He has spoken with us on numerous occasions in the past (and has even guest-blogged here) but the emails bounced. It appears that for whatever reason he’s preferring to keep a low profile at the moment.

We did manage to speak to two other people familiar with the sites’ operations and they told us they were surprised at the decision due to a number of factors.

The sites were apparently healthy and still had plenty of users. Indeed, the shutdown statement appears to carry a contradiction – “ghost town” forums are by their very nature not particularly difficult to keep “well-moderated” since nobody uses them. Nevertheless, this is the cited reason for the shutdown.

Also, Installous was used by millions and served up ads each and every time someone carried out a key app-related action within the software. Regardless of whether the Hackulous forums were doing well or not, Hackulous was still installed on millions of machines leading to (presumably) some half-decent advertising revenue to fund the project and more. It’s difficult to see why that would be terminated due to a quiet forum.

The other issue is that Dissident has always gone out of his way to say how passionately he feels about the “try before you buy” aspect of Installous and how important it is to give people a chance to taste an app before committing to a purchase. Trials are certainly more readily available officially than they were before Installous began so it’s possible that Dissident thought the mission was over.

The final piece of the puzzle could come on the back of rumors that a jailbreak for iOS6 won’t be forthcoming. No jailbreak for future iOSs means that Installous and indeed the completely legal Cydia can no longer function on new machines. Did this play a part in the shutdown decision? We’ll need to track down Dissident to find out more.

The closures of these Hackukous projects raise more questions than they answer but will still come as a shock to those who relied on Installous for their software fix. Time to start shelling out a few cents an app it seems – luckily that’s not going to break the bank.

Tom Hardy in Splinter Cell Movie

Fans of the Splinter Cell video game will be in for a treat. It will now have a movie adaptation starring Tom Hardy as the lead actor.

Hardy has singed on to play Splinter Cell protagonist Sam Fisher, a ninja-like operative working for a Black-ops unit called Echelon.

Ubisoft has been quite vocal about its intent to conquer the video game movie stigma echoing companies like Marvel and taking more active control of its properties and their subsequent movie adaptations.

Watch out for more Splinter Cell movie news – as well as any new developments with Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed and Ghost Recon movie projects.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson - Hercules

Dwayne Johnson has struck a deal to headline Hercules, an adaptation of Radical Comics’ Hercules: The Thracian Wars. The film is going to be directed by Brett Ratner and co-produced by Peter Berg (director of Hancock and Battleship).

Hercules is a far cry from Johnson’s previous forays into the sword & sandals sub-genre, with The Scorpion King and Mummy Returns. Moore and Wijaya’s comic book is renowned as a pretty faithful retelling of the Hercules mythology, picking up with the son of Zeus after he completes his famous twelve labors and becomes a mercenary interested in little more than getting paid (and wreaking bloody havoc on the battlefield).

Here is a proper description of Moore and Wijaya’s The Thracian Wars:

Nearly 3,200 years ago, a tormented soul walked the Earth as neither man nor god: Hercules, powerful son of the god-king Zeus, and for this he received nothing but suffering. I’m without question guilty of the following. Everything I’m about to vilify, I do. I’m well aware that I stink. But being aware that a problem exists is the first step in solving it. With that said…

Relaxation is becoming a lost art. Old people can sit on a stoop, sip a glass of iced tea and just, well, be. They don’t feel the need to Instagram their view from the porch. They don’t need to tweet, “This iced tea sucks a fat one! LoLz!” They don’t check in at “Jeb’s Porch.” They can just sit, decompress, think, reflect, relax. How many of us can do the same?

Let’s play a game. The next time you’re at a busy bar, look around. If you count more than 10 people on their phone, buy me a beer. If not, I’ll buy you five. I’ll win every time. Before smartphones existed, what did people do at bars and restaurants? Talk to each other more? Maybe borrow a quarter to go beep someone with 80085? At the goddamned beach, an area designated for relaxation, you’ll see a veritable sea of people on their phones. And by people, yes, I’m including my stupid self. Why? What sh*t is so important that we can’t leave our phones off while we’re at the beach? Call me crazy, but I suspect all beach-related phone activity is less checking for that life-altering email and more updating your Facebook status to say “At the beach!” or some derivative thereof. Smartphones make stupid people.

I’m not saying people should give up technology. That’s asinine. I f*cking love technology. I’m the modern man, damn it! But, like everything in life, moderation is the key. And I certainly don’t subscribe to the belief that people should stay off Facebook. Those who don’t at least acclimate themselves to Facebook to a small degree aren’t on some kind of intellectual plane that the rest of us are not. What they’re doing is consciously being left behind. Like it or not, someone resisting Facebook today is the equivalent of someone resisting email 20 years ago. How many letters do you currently write? Nowadays I can literally go weeks without even using a pen. It’s the inevitable evolution of society, for better or worse. I’m not against the use of technology. I’m against the overuse of it, because Facebook and its social media brethren distract us from real life.

Life is a series of moments, seamlessly strung together one by one. Nothing more, nothing less. And, sadly, once they happen, they’re gone forever. Life has no DVR. As much as I wish it were, this isn’t Saved By The Bell. We aren’t Zack Morris. We can’t freeze time, break the fourth wall and pontificate about why Lisa Turtle won’t blow Screech behind a dumpster at The Max. Trust me, I wish we could. Each day a ridiculously hot blonde girl longboards passed my apartment. You better believe if the possibility existed I would Zack Morris the f*ck out of those moments. But I can’t. So there she goes, rolling over my heart in the process. Time, much like the mysterious, buxom longboarder, moves on.

What I’m saying is, appreciate the moments in real time. Whenever we pause to tweet, Instagram or Facebook, we miss something. Live the moment, then reflect. Doing the opposite is like ordering a hamburger, telling everyone you know the hamburger will be amazing, then only eating the burger when it's cold and not as good. That, for my money, sucks. Also, now I’m hungry.

And like I said, I’m aware of my guilt. I, more than many of you, am guilty of everything I just wrote about. Some days my iPhone battery dies before lunch. Pathetic? Sure is. But I’m a work in progress. Lately I’ve been consciously trying to soak up the moments, one by one, as they happen. I’m also trying to learn how to properly relax. And if I do, I’ll try and tell you about it. With my mouth, not my thumbs.

A study, examined the relationship between dog owners and their preferred breeds -- separated, for this study, into pastoral breeds (like sheepdogs and collies), gun dogs (spaniels/labradors), terriers, hound dogs, toy breeds, working breeds (huskies) and utility breeds (bulldogs).

Researchers then asked 1,000 dog owners to fill out questionnaires testing for the "Big Five" personality traits.

Baboons Can Read... In The Near Future!

Baboons may not be able to read, exactly, but a new study indicated that they can tell the difference between real words and gibberish words with surprising accuracy.
A study published in the journal Science consisted of 300,000 tests in which four baboons were tasked with picking, on a computer screen, whether a word was gibberish ("BRRU") or real ("KITE"). They were rewarded with food for correct answers. The baboons were correct three-fourths of the time, with the most successful of them, four-year-old Dan, achieving 80% accuracy. The feat goes well beyond rote memorization, as the monkeys were able to understand which letters tended to combine in true words and could thus accurately categorize words they'd never seen before.

Researchers asked participants to perform tasks so simple that their minds would wander. They checked in to see how often the participants started daydreaming. Afterward, researchers asked the subjects to remember information while doing math problems, and found that participants whose minds had wandered more had better working memory. The implication, according to the study's authors, seems to be that daydreaming is the application of extra resources -- a mind with a considerable store of working memory is more likely to wander when that store isn't being occupied with anything.

Everyone who's ever had a boss has experienced frustration, but most of the time managers earn their position based on intelligence. And sometimes the disgruntled employees are right -- some bosses can be truly incompetent. There are as many types of bad bosses are there are bad people, but here are some common types, and the best ways to deal with having to work for them.

The Corporate Bully
Characteristics: Rude and drunk with power, corporate bullies will go out of their way to humiliate you in front of clients, colleagues and, of course, their own superiors. Their management strategy consists of making condescending remarks during performance reviews and threatening to fire you every time there’s a problem, whether or not you’re at fault.

How to handle: Dealing with incompetent bosses like the corporate bully can be challenging. The trick is to fly under your supervisor’s radar while drawing attention from the higher ups. Always stand up for yourself, but be subtle about it -- a disapproving look can go a long way -- and find a mentor who can expose you to new opportunities as well as shield you from your manager’s temper tantrums.

The Micromanager
Characteristics: Everyone is familiar with the saying: “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” Micromanagers live by it, nitpicking every aspect of your work, including the number of seconds by which you deviated from your scheduled break. Granted, they provide great support if you don’t mind having someone constantly checking on your progress, but if you value your independence, you’re in trouble.

How to handle: When dealing with incompetent bosses of the sort, it’s important you never appear as if you’re trying to usurp their authority. Micromanagers are typically insecure, so it’s best to keep them apprised of all your actions. However, only do so after the fact. The Office Politician
Characteristics: Cowardly and duplicitous, office politicians always put their needs over those of the team. They may act like your best friend, but they’ll stab you in the back the minute you get too chummy with senior management. Broken promises, misinformation and stolen ideas are all par for the course when dealing with incompetent bosses of this kind.

How to handle: The best way to protect yourself against an office politician is to communicate in writing. That way, all your questions, requests and proposals become official record. If your boss tries to finalize the agreement verbally, follow it up with an e-mail confirmation, making sure to CC at least one other person in the company.

The Senior Enforcer
Characteristics: Usually promoted because of seniority, this type of boss is devoid of common sense, following procedures to the letter and shutting down every effort to innovate. Terrified of making a decision, senior enforcers also have trouble with the notion that maintaining employee morale is among their duties, so don’t expect any sort of flexibility.

How to handle: It’s important you remain solution-minded when dealing with incompetent bosses, especially those lacking initiative. However, keep in mind that senior enforcers are notoriously resistant to change, so don’t bother introducing any groundbreaking ideas until you have a few allies ready to back you up. It’s also best to wait for a large meeting before making your proposal.

The Drama Queen
Characteristics: The term refers to managers of any gender who spend most of their day complaining, turning every mild inconvenience into a full-blown problem. Self-centered, disruptive and incapable of forethought, they reject the most obvious solutions just to prolong the situation and make every confrontation personal. Drama queens are never satisfied.

How to handle: Don’t let yourself get sucked in by all the negativity. It’s crucial you remain positive and solution-minded, offering your counsel in private, so as not to offend your supervisor. Another way of dealing with incompetent bosses like this is to ignore their tantrums. Avoid eye contact whenever possible, and schedule your breaks according to their peak complaining hours.

The Silent Strategist
Characteristics: Silent strategists often make the workplace unbearable because you can’t tell where you stand with them. They rarely provide feedback and tend to make important executive decisions without informing their staff, relying on a select few to carry out their master plan. As a result, the left hand never knows what the right one is doing.

How to handle: Dealing with incompetent bosses of this sort can be unnerving, but it’s important you keep your paranoia in check. Silent strategists usually don’t realize what they’re doing wrong, so don’t be afraid to voice your concerns and share your innovative ideas. You may become part of your supervisor’s inner circle and bring about real improvements.

Student : Nothing. I only have my faith.

Professor: Yes, faith. And that is the problem Science has.

Student : Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Professor: Yes.

Student : And is there such a thing as cold?

Professor: Yes.

Student : No, sir. There isn’t.

(The lecture theater became very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

(There was pin-drop silence in the lecture theater.)

Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Professor: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?

Student : You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it is, well you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?

Professor: So what is the point you are making, young man ?

Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Professor: Flawed ? Can you explain how?

Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good GOD and a bad GOD. You are viewing the concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing.

Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Professor: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going.)

Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor. Are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?

(The class was in uproar.)

Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?

(The class broke out into laughter. )

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Professor: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.

Student : That is it sir … Exactly ! The link between man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that keeps things alive and moving.

Scooby called as a witness in a murder trial

The victim's family called for a murder investigation, and because the 59-year-old woman's dog had been home at the time of her death, the animal -- whose name is Scooby -- was brought into the witness box to see how he would react to a potential suspect. Scooby "barked furiously" at the suspect and was commended by Judge Thomas Cassuto for his "invaluable assistance." The Palais de Justice confirmed that this was the first time a dog had appeared as a witness in a murder trial.

I am a big fan of English Bulldogs, they are ridiculously cute and have lots of personality. But due to tons of health issues that you have to deal with I am considering owning a healthier dog and that's where I've stumbled upon the Olde English Bulldogge.

The Olde English Bulldogge is the new version of the Old English Bulldog that existed in England during 17th and 18th century. Notice that there are extra Es and Gs when it comes to spelling. Sad to say, the original is now extinct but I'm grateful to David Leavitt for re-creating this breed. It's a healthier dog and bred for its purpose.

FACTS:
1. Olde English Bulldogges are athletic and most importantly of very good health, males are free breeders and females are free whelpers unlike the modern English Bulldog.

2. The Olde English Bulldogge is devoid of all breathing issues and is capable of enjoying outdoor activity without concern except in extreme heat or cold.

3. The temperament is very stable and trustworthy making them a loyal companion, capable protector and the ultimate family member.

4. Olde English Bulldogges thrive on pleasing their owners and are very trainable.

5. Their lifespan is between 10 and 14 years.

Women are attracted to men with bulldog faces???

Guys with bulldog-like faces have been chick magnets throughout human evolutionary history.

A recent study of the skulls of human ancestors and modern humans finds that women, and thereby, evolution, selected for males with relatively short upper faces. The region between the brow and the upper-lip is scrunched proportionately to the overall size of their heads.

Among the men who fit the bill: Will Smith and Brad Pitt.

In a past study, researchers found a similar facial pattern in chimpanzees, with males having relatively shorter and broader faces compared with females, controlling for body size.

Men with "mini mugs" might have been most attractive to the opposite sex and thus most likely to attract mates for reproduction, passing along the striking features to the next generation and so forth, said lead study author Eleanor Weston, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum in London.

"The evolution of facial appearance is central to understanding what makes men and women attractive to each other," Weston said. "We have found the distance between the lip and brow was probably immensely important to what made us attractive in the past, as it does now."

Whereas past studies have suggested facial symmetry and facial masculinity play roles in this game of desire, none have provided evidence of an evolutionary shaping of male and female faces.

"I think it's a very nice approach," said Randy Thornhill, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of New Mexico, referring to the study. Though not involved in it, Thornhill agrees with the finding that certain facial features evolved due to sexual selection.

Facial coordinates

The researchers calculated certain facial coordinates on 68 males and 53 female skulls from a contemporary native southern Africa population ranging in age from infant to 30 years old. Measurements included distances between the point between the eye brows and upper lip and from cheekbone to cheekbone.

Weston and her colleagues also examined facial data from fossil hominin skulls dating back to 2.6 million years ago, unearthed in Kenyan deposits as part of the Koobi Fora Research Project IV. These skulls represented five species: Homo erectus, Homo ergaster, Paranthropus boisei, Australopithecus africanus and Paranthropus robustus. These facial coordinates were then compared with the contemporary coordinates.

In spite of their bulkier bodies (about 15 percent more massive than women's bodies), and similarly broader faces, men have upper faces similar in height to women's faces, the scientists found. But compared with the rest of the head, a guy's mid-face is compressed. The differences held throughout human history.

A simple ratio of upper face length to broadness could serve as a proxy for facial attractiveness, the scientists say in a report on their research published in the online journal PLoS ONE.

Masculine appeal

The scientists are not certain why today's distinctive male face and its proportions evolved.
"A shorter upper face does serve to exaggerate the size of other face features such as the flare of the cheeks and the size of the jaw, but this might not be why it developed," Weston told LiveScience. "Rather the shorter [and] broader the male face the more ‘masculine’ and the less ‘feminine'—based on biological face changes that take place during growth and development—the individual becomes," she said.

Also, this facial development was accompanied by a shrinking of guys' canine teeth, so men appeared less threatening to competitors, yet attractive to mates.

While the scientists who authored the current study examined skulls and did not specifically study how modern faces fit the findings, the Natural History Museum press officers applied Weston's findings to a "quick and dirty" survey of photos of celebrities.

They came up with a list of stars with masculine faces, listing them from most to least masculine according to facial dimensions: Will Smith, Peter Andre, Justin Timberlake, Thierry Henry, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Johnny Depp and Kanye West.

Drink Beer To Get Smarter!!??

This is tremendous news. Let’s celebrate by tossing back two or 12. A study found that beer-drinkers were better at solving brainteasers than their sober counterparts.

To reach that surprising conclusion, the researchers devised a bar game in which 40 men were given three words and told to come up with a fourth that fits the pattern.

For example, the word “cheese” could fit with words like “blue” or “cottage” or “Swiss.”

Half the players were given two pints. The other half got nothing.

The result? Those who imbibed solved 40% more of the problems that their sober counterparts.

Also, the drinkers finished their problems in 12 seconds while it took the non-drinkers 15.5 seconds.

“We found at 0.07 blood alcohol, people were worse at working memory tasks, but they were better at creative problem-solving tasks,” psychologist Jennifer Wiley reported on the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) site.

See, sometimes being completely focused and lucid is overrated.

These findings certainly explain why getting a girl into bed – the ultimate brainteaser – is easier six-brews-deep.

So next time someone says you’re acting like an idiot after a bunch of beers, tell them you can solve the hell out of any problem and they should shut the f*ck up.

English Bulldog

Taking a turn toward a smaller breed, the English Bulldog is a pint-sized tough guy, or at least they’re designed to look that way. This dog looks like a mix of a pug and a Mastiff. Bulldogs can look simultaneously peeved and happy, and they have lovable and quirky personalities that are a significant departure from the other manly dogs seen here.

Having a English Bulldog as a pet is a surefire way to win friends and impress women; their bullish looks and saggy skin folds provide lots of laughs and their relatively poor conditioning, due to their heavyset, makes for some hilarious outings at the park when tossing a stick around. Still, they are just as dedicated to their territory as any other breed, and their dedicated companionship and ability to inspire are perfect reasons for their use as the official mascot of the U.S. Marine Corps.

English Mastiff

The word “mastiff” evolved from the English word “masty,” which meant powerful. That should be enough indication that this dog means business. The English Mastiff is a broad, thickly built canine that has come to represent most of the breeds within the Molosser type. Cane Corso

This dog is another of the Molosser type, but different enough from the English Mastiff to warrant a separate recommendation. The Cane Corso has a physical presence unmatched by medium-sized dogs; this is an extremely muscular breed that is blessed with a brilliant coat. Their athleticism is their most defining feature, which is likely owed to their Italian roots as farming, hunting and gaming dogs that were also considered reliable and trustworthy.

The strong, silent type, these dogs are definitely only for a specific type of owner; one who is gentle, subtle and willing to put in the effort to earn the Corso’s trust. Not the best dog to bring around strangers and children (unless they’ve been brought up in a family environment), but when raised properly, Corsos are able to remain well-behaved around many types of people and generally pacifist around other canines. These dogs need the gentle approach because of their cautious instincts, but they easily personify what it takes to be on this list of manly dogs.

Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman pinscher is probably one of the most easily recognizable masculine dogs around, partly because of the media coverage they receive. The Doberman is also visually stunning as it’s one of the most muscular dogs and one of the most agile and versatile.

Surprisingly, Dobermans are much more docile, intelligent and friendlier than they’re perceived. They can easily be mistaken as nasty guard dogs with a sharp bite, but only if provoked in an aggressive manner by an unassuming stranger. When these dogs are properly socialized, they become loyal and offer a great mix of protection, personality and manliness.

When given property or something to call their own, Rottweilers will fiercely defend it, and that includes their young, their owner and their favorite chew toy. German Shepherd

These manly dogs have unfortunately been cast as utilitarian animals; you can’t watch television without seeing them in action as a bomb-sniffing, drug-searching, criminal-chasing do-it-alls. Gorgeous and confident, they are also both proud and modest. They have the size of a large dog that intimidates (usually 60 pounds to 90 pounds), but they also have a heartwarming affection and loyalty for their owners and the people they know.

Bloodhound

It is said that Bloodhounds can detect the scent of only a few skin cells, and will be persistent in capturing its prey for hours -- even days.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever in general, is an instant favorite for owners of manly dogs. More interesting, however, is the Lab’s webbed feet, which these Canadian-originating dogs used to swim around in icy waters and drag nets to shore after leaping off fishermen’s boats.

Recent studies have noted the health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle, but a study illustrated the surprising scale of that risk.
People who sit for over 11 hours a day are 40% more likely to die over the next three years from any cause, regardless of how active they otherwise are. The study gathered data from nearly 22,500 people, and ruled out other risk factors like smoking and body-mass index. The results were purely due to long periods of sitting, the effects of which can impact everything from mental health to cancer risk.

5 Things About Pitbulls

There's no canine out there quite as controversial as the pit bull. Many perceive it as an unpredictable and dangerous domesticated dog, a popular consensus that has led to pit bull bans in some communities (such as the city of Denver). Others protest that the breed has gotten the bum's rush at every turn, and that pit bulls are in fact very much misunderstood.

So what's the real deal? Are pit bulls really dangerous animals that should be feared? Or are they actually mild-tempered family dogs that only transform into monsters in the hands of a negligent owner?
Getting a perspective on this debate requires some knowledge of the underlying facts. Here are five that you didn't know about.

1- Three factors determine canine aggression
Perhaps the greatest point of debate regarding the pit bull is whether its headline-grabbing aggression is the product of genetics or of learned behavior. A study of 431 fatal dog attacks that occurred between 1965 and 2001 concluded that there are actually three factors that determine the aggressiveness of a dog, be it a pit bull or a cocker spaniel.

A. Function of the dog:
Dogs behave differently depending on the environment in which they are raised and the function they perform; for example, a family pet will display a different temperament than a guard dog. Pit bulls are often mistakenly used to guard a house or business, but research has shown that these extremely sociable dogs do not make for very good guards. They are too distracted by other animals and humans to perform this duty properly. As a result, pit bulls that are placed into these situations will often exhibit abnormal behavior.

B. Owner responsibility:
How attentive and responsive an owner is toward his dog greatly influences that dog's behavior. This is perhaps most evident when one encounters an animal that was abused by a previous owner, and is high-strung and timid as a result. The pit bull is known as a high-maintenance pet; it is extremely friendly, but also attention-craving with protective tendencies. Thus, an owner looking for a tough dog as a status symbol and not as a loved companion should not adopt a pit bull, since neglect of this breed may adversely affect its behavior.

C. Reproductive status: Male and female pit bulls behave differently toward other animals and toward each other. Males are known to be more fiery and in possession of shorter tempers. Nonetheless, it has been recorded that female vs. female pit bull fights are more violent than male ones. Generally, same-sex pairings of pit bulls are not recommended within a single household, as frequent dog bouts could result.

2- A pit bull's attack mechanism is instinctive
While the three fore-cited factors will determine the behavior that a dog exhibits, every dog also has its instincts. And one of the pit bull's instinctive tendencies is to attack other animals, and in rare but extremely magnified cases, humans. Why do pit bulls attack, and does this instinct really make them more aggressive than other dogs?

For centuries, the American Pit Bull Terrier (the breed that the term "pit bull" generally, but not exclusively, refers to) was bred to fight other dogs in mortal combat. To ignore this fact would be to deny the truth. Because of this history, it is only natural that modern-day pit bulls display more aggression than some other breeds. We see similar bred instincts in plenty of other dogs, such as in the Greyhound's tendency to run fast and the Sheltie's instinct to herd. The pit bull owner must acknowledge his pet's heritage and be prepared to handle situations where his dog's instincts are aroused.

The first step toward properly handling a pit bull is to recognize its willingness to fight. One must be willing to invest the time and energy to avoid the nasty situations that may arise as a result. A pit bull can be trained to know when it is and when it is not appropriate to display its innate aggression.

3- You can reduce a pit bull's aggression
To think that training can eliminate a pit bull's aggressive nature entirely would be foolhardy. But there are ways to make a pit bull more docile without inflicting harm on it. The most common way is to neuter your dog. Not only does this help to control the pet population but it also eliminates the significant hormonal changes that both young males and females in heat undergo.

These changes greatly influence behavior. For example, a male pit bull can smell a female in heat from miles away, but if he's trapped in a house, he will not be able to get to her. His inability to mate can lead to frustration and aggression. Neutering the animal will preempt this cyclical behavior, although it won't totally remove a pit bull's aggressive tendencies.

Another way to tame a pit bull is to put it through obedience training. Since these dogs are extremely social animals, they tend to get overwhelmed by their human company and can become quite a handful, exhibiting extreme happiness and energy. Obedience training can teach the pit bull basic domestic behavior and stamp on the dog's brain a guideline on how to behave with humans.

Finally, a pit bull can be controlled through responsible ownership. This is by and large the best way to ensure that your pit bull does not contribute to the belief that the breed is a hyper-violent one. Constant supervision is required so as to develop a relationship with the dog; this helps the owner recognize the cues that his pet is getting angry or aggressive.

More destructive solutions, such as shaving down a pit bull's teeth, should not be considered, as they are abusive and harmful to the dog. They will most likely have the reverse effect and result in a newfound fierceness in the animal.

4- Statistics support both sides of the debate
A study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that dog attacks over a 15-year span in the United States resulted in 279 human deaths, or a little more than 17 a year. With an estimated dog population of 59 million, this annual fatality rate means that only an infinitesimal percentage of dogs are involved in such violent activity.

Still, in a continuation of its study, the CDC found that between 1979 and 1996, pit bulls accounted for 60 dog bite-related fatalities. This count more than doubled the rate of the next-most-frequent breed, the rottweiler. Though this fact lends itself to the belief that pit bulls are more dangerous than other dogs, one must also remember that between 1965 and 2001, a total of 36 different breeds were involved in fatal attacks on humans in the United States.

A 1994 study investigating the reasons and commonalities among the 585,000 average annual dog bite incidents revealed that Chow Chows and German Shepherds, not pit bulls, were frequent biters. Though this stat does not absolve pit bulls from the criticism they receive, it shows that their breed is not the only one with an aggressive streak. The essence of this often-conflicting information is that pit bulls are not the only breed of dog that shows a tendency to attack. In fact, there are over a dozen breeds that frequently show up in analyses as having attacked humans.

These numbers are often distorted by the media, which sensationalizes the pit bull's tendency to be aggressive. As a result, people generally fear that this dog will attack humans. A study conducted by the American Temperament Test Society simply rejects this notion. In December of 2003, a temperament test was given to dog breeds around the country, and a score was given based on the proportion of the animals that passed over the animals that failed. The final results gave the American Pit Bull Terrier a passing rate of 83.9%, which was slightly better than that of the "docile" Golden Retriever -- 83.2%.

5- Pit bull laws side with the injured
Each state has its own laws regarding vicious dogs. For instance, Rhode Island law indicates that a person injured by a dog attack can recover damages from the owner if he proves that it was the owner's negligence that caused the injury. In West Virginia, if it is proven that the owner had knowledge of his dog's violent propensity, he is strictly liable, meaning he's financially responsible for all damages.

In extreme cases, a negligent owner can even go to jail for failing to look after their dog properly. One such case occurred on June 10, 2000, in Brown County, Indiana, when a census worker was attacked and killed by a pack of 18 dogs. The couple that owned the pack was charged in a wrongful death suit; the wife was sentenced to one-and-a-half years in jail, and the husband to three.

Nuances in state law may relieve owners from responsibility. For example, if a dog attacks someone who is trespassing on the owner's property, liability may be removed from the owner. Those who care for pit bulls must be aware of state laws in order to protect themselves. Even in non-violent cases, scared neighbors have been known to circulate petitions to rid their blocks of "dangerous" dogs, and more than a few of these petitions have evolved into lawsuits.

Every pit bull attack renews the heated debate over whether or not these dogs should be outlawed. And though these incidences are few and far between, the media scrutiny surrounding them is particularly intense, meaning that the public interest level in pit bulls is consistently high. These dogs are generally perceived to be threats to humans, especially children, and their history of violence piques the curiosity of many people.

As pit bull legislation across the United States continues to be amended, discussion over how to handle these dogs will persist for some time. The government and society at large need to understand more about this special breed before passing final judgment.

Puppy Teething and Biting

There are a number of reasons puppies nip, bite, and chew. This behavior starts before puppies even leave the litter.

Your goal to start with is to teach your puppy how to control the force of his/her biting. Your puppy's littermates will initiate this process and then it is up to you to continue on with it when your new puppy arrives home. This will ensure (not guarantee) that if your dog does bite someone in the future the damage will be minimized. When you have given your puppy sufficient feedback regarding the strength of his bite only then can you begin to reduce the prevalence of the biting behavior.

If you catch the biting problem early on it may be easy to rectify. Just try to redirect the biting from your flesh to a toy or chew bone. For very young puppies this method is often all you'll need do. As soon as your pup starts to bite your hands just let out a firm "No!" and replace your fingers with the chew toy (or ice cube if your puppy is teething).

The video above is probably the most popular method and my personal favorite. Make your puppy think he is hurting you each time he has a nip at you. This method replicates the way dogs sort out this biting amongst themselves. When puppies are biting and nipping each other it only stops when one puppy lets out a yelp. We can use this natural way dogs learn by letting out an Ouch! or an Arrr! every time one of our puppy's bite. The trick is to startle your dog with your voice, and then pull away and stop playing with your puppy for a while. Your pup will soon learn that when he starts to bite, his playmate (you) goes away.

Teach your puppy the obedience training command "Leave It!". This method works great but is more suitable for older puppies.

In bad biting cases as soon as your puppy latches onto your hand say "No!" and quickly put your thumb inside his mouth under his tongue, and your other finger under his chin. Hold it there for about 10 seconds (not too tightly). This will feel uncomfortable to your puppy plus he won't be able to bite you.

Again if your puppy has a severe biting problem you can try this training technique. Put on a pair of gloves and apply a foul tasting substance to them (something your dog doesn't like). Your dog will soon learn that if he bites you, it won't be tasty! This method produces a strong negative association to your dog every time he decides to bite you. Some dogs are smart enough to realize that when you take your foul tasting gloves off, it is fine to sink their fangs into you again!

For older puppies (around 6 months) this is a sure fire technique to stop puppy mouthing. Put a pinch or choke collar on your puppy and each time he bites you give the lead a short sharp tug. This correction will form an unpleasant association to your dog every time he bites you. It won't take him long to stop. Some trainers believe this method to be fairly extreme, and I agree that you would only need to call on it in very rare circumstances - I have never needed to go to this level. I believe it's far more effective to educate your puppy rather than inflicting punishment or trying to extinquish a behavior altogether.

How to stop a puppy from biting - these methods have been recommended to me, but I have never tried them myself:

Spray your puppy with water every time he starts nipping.

Fill up an empty can with rocks or coins. Each time your puppy starts biting say No! and give the can a shake. Apparently puppies hate this rattling noise.

If you're worried that you may have an overly aggressive puppy on your hands, please seek the advice of an experienced animal behaviorist or dog trainer.

Like I mentioned earlier, the most important piece of advice regardless of which training method you choose is to be consistent and provide the clear feedback your puppy needs to learn.
