Whether you are running for peak fitness, to
burn those calories or shift excess fat, this
is the one exercise that fits the bill.

All you need is a pair of good trainers and
an open space and you are away. Sorted!

If you are running to improve your fitness with Krav Maga
then your training must
mirror this.

Hours of 'roadwork' will, in the end, take
up too much time in your training schedule.

Running on roads can be TOUGH on the joints,
especially knees and ankles. Thirty to forty
minutes on hard road surfaces is probably
enough.

Grass has less impact on the joints. Parks,
football pitches, and woodland trails are all
GREAT running spots, and have a less polluted
atmosphere.

Alternatively you can run on a treadmill to
do your training (personally I find this mind
numbingly boring).

What is the best type of running for combat
athletes? In my experience the best two types
of running are interval and hill running.

By varying your pace you can give your heart
and lungs a GREAT work out while developing
the explosiveness that you need.

Look for a marker, for example a tree, lamp
post, park bench or car and then sprint FULL
tilt towards it. Once there, return to your
steady pace running, so you are gathering some
active rest before the next sprint.

The time you leave between sprints is up to
your personal fitness and where you are in
relation to your fight preparation."The problem I find when it comes to training
and fitness, is routines can get boring.

Kevin O'Hagan - one of Europe's best self
defence instructors and trainer of many top
fighters, tells how to do a very
'different' workout, his 'Aqua combat
conditioning workout'.

This awesome workout is all done in a
swimming pool.
"If you don't fancy pounding the streets or
going to the gym then this workout makes a
welcome change. I developed it into a full
blown workout that is both demanding and
invigorating.

You will be pleasantly surprised just how
difficult it can be. It will get the lungs
working, the heart PUMPING and those muscles
straining. You can make this as long and
intense as you like.

Firstly swim four lengths of the pool SLOWLY.
Now do four lengths as FAST as you possibly
can. Then go back to four lengths slowly
etc etc. It's up to you how many you do.

Next start in the shallow end and do water
sprinting to the deep end and back again.
Go for six lengths or more. To perform this
just pump your arms and legs as you would
running on land.

The water's resistance will work against
you and really BLAST the cardio system and
improve your explosive power.

Next get waist deep in the water and perform
jumping knee tucks. Once you have done these
now do jumping lunges.

The abs can be worked by knee raises and leg
raises from the edge of the pool or in the
water for added resistance.

Now tread water for a few minutes and then
finish with ten FAST lengths of the pool
and you are done!

The workout should take somewhere between
twenty to thirty minutes. It needs to be
constant with no rest.

Do not exercise on a full stomach or after
drinking. It goes without saying, get yourself
checked out with medical advice, especially if
you have not done anything very intense like
this recently."
She was already dead at the
scene.

There is no further information. You wonder
whether it was an intruder...or some so called
crime of passion.

Of course, the media loves reporting this.
It has IMPACT.

Made me wonder all over again about being
attacked by someone with any kind of weapon.
We have covered it here before. It has become
more frequent over the years.

Over the years many articles have been written
for martial arts publications on the subject of
disarming a weapon wielding attacker. Each system
has their own methods and ideas.

Many top-class martial artists have shown in
photo strips their particular techniques for
stopping a weapon assault, with what LOOKS
like relative ease.

The subject should NOT be treated lightly.
Disarming an assailant is highly dangerous. It
is not impossible but EXTREMELY hazardous.

Even 30 years martial arts experience or a
being a 6th Dan black belt does NOT
guarantee anything whatsoever.

You MUST cultivate the right mental attitude,
you must accept the dangers, accept you may
be hit, cut, stabbed, etc., accept there may be
blood, pain, fear, panic, then learn to blot
all that out and have just one thought -
SURVIVAL.

Keep that single minded attitude that whatever
happens you WILL fight on and win; you will NOT
be a victim.

Constant, serious and intense training with
realistic techniques are the only way to stand
a chance. Notice I said 'chance' - there are no
guarantees.

In the end, the odds of this happening to you
remain low despite all you see and hear on TV!

How to defend ourselves with Krav Maga if you end up on the ground in a street altercation ?.
"Gouging or finger thrusting into the Jugular
Notch (the indentation at the base of the windpipe)
is a good move, as is RIPPING the side of his mouth
with your thumbs or digging a knuckle into the
mastoid behind the ear...

Combine these with butts, then twist the opponent
off you.

If opponent is on his stomach and you straddle
his back, hit him with elbows and short punches
to spine and back of neck.

If he attempts to push himself up, then go straight
for a choke or kneel on the back and pull up on his
chin to finish.

If you are lying sideways across opponent's body
and he has your neck locked then grab and squeeze
his testicles or pinch flesh high on his inner thigh -
also push your bony forearm into his neck or up under
his nose to relieve pressure then bite his body
anywhere (nipples, pec's, flesh on floating ribs)
until you can get out.

When you are under in the same position, HAMMER
away at his exposed kidney's and floating ribs,
get a hand under and between to squeeze his testicles
and bite at any exposed target, then twist out and
get on top.

The list could go on and on - but hopefully this will
show you the different sort of technique and mental
attitude you need for 'street wrestling'. These moves
are equalizers, especially for smaller people.

I know loads of armbars, locks, leg locks, strangles
etc, but in a street situation you will not have time
to execute them. You have got to adapt!

Some say the moves are brutal, but in answer to that,
unless you have experienced a situation where your
strength is ebbing, your arms feel like lead, your guts
feel sick and you have a larger, heavier opponent lying
on you, you will have to know and use the techniques
mentioned."

Remember most grappling arts like Judo and
Wrestling are done on mats or canvas, so you
have no fear of hitting the ground...

Arts like the now famous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
were practiced in a warm climate on country
where the exponents fought on sandy beaches.

They were not rolling round on icy, hard, cold,
uneven and uncompromising pavement in the middle
of January on a winter's night... nor was it designed
for thrashing around on a beer soaked or glass
covered bar floor or dance floor after trouble
has started...neither for struggling on a urine
drenched toilet floor!

Remember - if you are out for a quiet night with
your 'lady', with your best 'designer' gear on,
looking cool, the LAST thing you want to be doing
is rolling about in three different kinds of dog
excrement (note how I cleaned that up, I wish
someone would!) in front of the local 'takeaway'.

So hopefully by now you can see some of the down
points to floor grappling.

Also to be considered is the time factor. The longer
you are on the floor the more dangerous it becomes
for you...

Wrestling and Judo pins are NOT much good in 'real
combat' ; they can only serve as time buying
'manoeuvres' to get into a better finishing
technique.

In the street you will be looking for a
QUICK finish and to get back onto your feet. It won't
be a timed bout with the 'ref' ready to step in.

An opponent who may submit to a hold or a lock can
and may get up and suddenly up the stake by
drawing a weapon or fashioning one out of something
at hand.

It really is best to make sure he DOESN'T get up
again in a hurry - so you can make your exit!"

Defending yourself with Krav Maga on the floor.
"If pulled down close by an opponent, immediately
bite into nose, ear, cheek or neck for a release -
then gouge into the windpipe with a claw hand
squeezing it shut or thumb gouge into the eyes or
ram finger up their nostrils and rip...

Grabbing the hair or ears and banging the head
on the floor has quite a 'sobering' effect on
your would be attacker. So has a fast choke
hold.

If you feel you are losing balance in this
'mount' position, lean over and rest your hands
on the floor. Put your chest into opponents face, then
when he pushes you off, take his straight arm,
pivot off his chest to the side and dislocate
the elbow with the famous cross arm-bar.

Make sure you DRIVE the heel of your arm
into the face and body of your opponent
to prevent them attempting biting your leg.

If you go down underneath, then get the opponent
between your legs in 'the guard' position.

If he attempts to punch you, pull him forward
in the scissors until he loses his balance. Then
pull his head down to yours and bite into his
ear, and get one of your feet between his legs
and flip him over and off.

If he is strangling you, push back with your
legs and hips, grab his straightened arm and
swing your foot over his neck and pull him
over and down for the cross arm-bar again!

If he has mounted your chest and is choking
you, drive your thumbs up into his eyes, then
grab the back of his head and his chin and
crank his neck around in a hard twist to
take him off your body."

How to defend ourselves if you end up on the ground in a street altercation...

"So what do I do if I go to the floor?

Well there's plenty you can do - but the rule for
the street is to make it quick. Do not let your
opponent settle into a good hold or get into a
superior position.

The following techniques, concepts and theories
are taken from the system of Martial Arts I teach -
'Kempo Goshin Jutsu'. They have worked for me in
and out of the dojo. They are not by any means
unique but they are what I teach my students to
do on the floor...

Remember 'how you train is how you react'.

I believe if you DON'T have command of the
following techniques you will struggle badly on
the floor, especially against a large and
aggressive opponent.

These techniques are an overview - NOT the whole
picture - otherwise it may take a whole book
to demonstrate.

If you go to the ground and you are on top of
opponent, cushion your fall by landing on them.
There is a certain SICKENING feeling about landing
on a pavement on your kneecaps or elbows.

Try and drive your knee into their groin and then
fall dropping the point of your elbow into the
sternum (breastbone) or solar plexus.

Naturally, from there, let your head snap forward
in a butt to their face...the best target being the
nose.

Climb so you straddle their chest, consolidate your
balance and bang away with fist, elbows, palm
heels and butts - then get out QUICK."

Don't hold your breath if somebody attacks you!

"Another critical factor towards controlling
yourself during a confrontation, is through
controlling your breathing.

In stressful situations such as a potentially
violent confrontation there is a tendency to
take a shallow breathe in, followed by the
action of holding your breathe or to continue
breathing at a very shallow rate, both of which
only serve to increase the anxiety of your
situation...

Instead we should aim to FEED our lungs with
oxygen by breathing in through the nose, taking
the air deep down into the lower abdomen,
holding it briefly before expelling the breath
out through the mouth.

0f course we would need to make such a practice
both habitual and natural looking in order
to appear in complete control.

This is more applicable during the verbal interview
part of a confrontation or if you have some kind
of pre-warning that a situation is developing,
as good awareness will allow.

Then you will have the chance to gain such
control over your breathing.

A good method of practice when you find yourself
becoming adrenalised or even slightly agitated
is to take 3 deep breaths.

Breathe in for 3 seconds hold for 3 seconds and
breathe out for 3 seconds repeating until you
achieve a calmer and more controlled state.

I used to practice this method whilst working on
the door. When ever I was called to a situation
over the radio I would use this technique on route
to the scene.

The LOWER you can keep your heart rate the more
control you will have.

Although the adrenal conditioning developed
through the proper use of simulation and Scenario
type training drills CAN help you de-sensitise to
the effects of this essential biochemistry, they
can never completely duplicate to the same degree
of intensity as that of a real life or death
situation.

They will however allow you to reduce the reality
gap between the dojo and the street.

You should learn all that you can about the
workings of fear and adrenaline, understand
the importance of breath control in order to
help lower the heart rate, but de-sensitisation
can ONLY take place through repeated exposure
to those feelings.

This falls in line with what I said at the
beginning about people working in high risk
jobs and learning to control them selves and
function under pressure, due to the repeated
exposure that their working environment has to
offer on a daily basis.

You would be amazed at what you can get used
to."

Survival Stress Response (SSR)

Stay Cool...

People whose jobs put them in harms
way on a regular basis (Firemen, Police
officers and Security people, like Door Staff,
Bodyguards etc.) become better able to deal
with the effects of adrenaline.

This is due to the fact that the repeated
exposure to situations that cause adrenal
release gradually desensitise you to the
intensity of the same.

The main reason individuals can act in the
face of danger is because they anticipate
and EXPECT these feelings of adrenaline.

When you have experienced them before and
know they will occur again under similar
circumstances you will NOT be caught off
guard.

The dreaded freeze...‏
Scientific research into the adrenal state also
referred to as the Survival Stress Response
(SSR) carried out by a scientist in this field
called Bruce Siddle, has indicated that our
ability to function under the effects of adrenal
stress is directly related to an increase in our
heart rate.

At 115 beats per minute (bpm) most people will
start to lose fine motor function. Skills which
involve hand and eye co-ordination or finger
dexterity will become difficult to perform...

As the heart rate increases to 145 bpm and
beyond our body will start to REDUCE the
efficiency of certain bodily functions that
it considers to be less essential to our
survival during this time of stress, these
include effects to both our visual and auditory
systems as well as temporary impairment to
certain areas of the brain

The thing to remember is that in combat, our
heart rate can go from 70 bpm to 220 bpm in
less than a second such a case can TRIGGER a
state of hyper-vigilance or the DREADED freeze
response.

At the very least our decision making abilities
can become severely impaired.

Further research by Siddle suggests that the
ideal heart rate for a functional combative
response allowing maximum reaction time and
maintenance of gross motor skills will fall
into a range between 115-145 bpm.

The key factor lies in our ability to remain
within this ideal range. This can be attained
through certain training drills that will allow
you to de-sensitise to the effects
of adrenaline.

Aggression Therapy drills, Simulation and
scenario training in a controlled environment
using body armour, role play and AGGRESSIVE
dialogue can take you a large part of the way
towards de-sensitisation to the effects of
adrenaline, and will develop your ability to
remain calmer in such situations thereby
reducing the increase in heart rate."

Therefore you will need to expect and accept
the sensations of adrenaline, as they will
always be present in any confrontational
situation that you may find yourself in...

The feelings will NEVER go away and are
essential to our survival.

Thus, with an understanding and regular
exposure we can become very capable of using
adrenaline to our advantage and function
effectively.

In the interview stages of a potential
confrontation you must strive to control
your self by taking a deep-breath and
relaxing your shoulders.

Slow your body movements down so that you
don't look guarded or jumpy. Your demeanour
should be natural, smooth, and controlled.

This does NOT mean you should not use an
aggressive approach, because in some cases
strong, assertive communication can be
effective.

But if you stay cool, the subject MAY doubt
his ability to fluster you and question
whether he has chosen the right person to
attack.

He may wonder why you are so calm and imagine
you have backup or that you are more
streetwise than he is."

Any self defence trick will not work if you can`t handle fear in a street confrontation..

"Our ability to use our thought process
will become less rational leaving all
decision making abilities a lot more
difficult.

This is due to blood leaving the brain
to be put to use else where.

Your eyes will become wide and STARING
in an attempt to take in more information.

This is due to the effect of tunnel vision,
which will make your field of view like as
if you were looking through a toilet roll
tube.

This can make you vulnerable to an attack
from the side if you are focused on a
threat in front of you, try and keep your
peripheral vision open by looking around
often.

Your hearing will also become impaired due
to what's known as auditory exclusion in an
attempt to tune into the threat.

Your ability to perform fine motor skills
or complex actions will become seriously
reduced leaving you with only gross motor
ability.

On the POSITIVE side adrenaline will make
you stronger, faster and more resistant
to pain.

As you can see all these effects have
a purpose and are in fact ESSENTIAL to
our survival.

Try and gain an understanding of adrenaline,
so you may use it to your advantage."

The most important aspect when dealing with any POTENTIALLY violent confrontation !

"For the individual the most important
aspect when dealing with any POTENTIALLY
violent confrontation will be his/her
understanding of the fight or flight
response.

Your ability to cope with adrenal stress
when a situation 'kicks off' will make
all the difference to how you handle the
situation.

The fact is that knowledge IS power
and if you understand what is happening
to your own body under the effects of
adrenal stress then you are more likely
to gain control over yourself and the
situation and LESS likely to freeze up or
over react.

The body responds to danger by secreting
adrenaline this is what we often mis-
interpreted as FEAR.

If you do NOT understand this simple fact,
then what you are more likely to encounter,
especially if you are startled, is the
'freeze' response.

The only way to lessen the effect of the
startle reflex and prevent freezing up is
through awareness, being switched on and
good threat assessment abilities and the
anticipation of the adrenaline sensation.

We MUST learn to understand what is going
on inside our mind and body when we are
faced with danger.

If we have this understanding then we will
be better prepared to move past the mental
and physical sensations of adrenal release
so we can physically function effectively."

For Use in Street Fights, Self Defense Or Kung Fu !

There are many areas in which Kravv Maga, MMA and RBSDS can
learn from and complement each other...

One of the most common questions is asked how to handle fear...

People tell me how - when they have been
confronted by an aggressor - they FREEZE...

Personally, I think that just knowing that
you know some self defence helps you in
a big way.

My view is that it gives you a LOT more
confidence if you are in a bad situation.

However, whether you are totally inexperienced
or an ultra-experienced martial artist,
fear is a MASSIVE factor. Lee Morrison:Urban Combatives System

  Lee Morrison, founder of the
BRILLIANT 'urban combatives' self defence
system, gives his view on the subject:
"In times of danger each and every one of
us will feel the effects of the Survival
Stress Response this is triggered into
action via the security control centre
of the brain which is called the
Amygdala .

The Amygdala is basically the threat
detecting organ of the brain...

During stress such as that of a VIOLENT
confrontation the Sympathetic nervous
system will take over and a neural surge
will cause an increase in heart rate that
will in turn raise our blood pressure.

This results in blood being withdrawn from
our extremities in order to be pumped to
our vital inner organs.

Blood is also drawn from our brain cortex
for the same reason. The result of which
impairs our thinking, in particular our
decision making abilities.

Due to this restriction in blood flow to
the brain the Neo-Cortex or higher brain
is gone, and the Limbic System which is
the part of the brain that is responsible
for emotions will NOW take prominence,
making all complex decision making
impossible.

The result is that we are now reduced
to the intelligence of a DOG.

In addition to this is what's known as
adrenal dump this will create a release
of endorphins that will make you stronger,
faster and more resistant to pain and
shock.

The FLIP side of this coin is the mental
implications that will also have to be
dealt with.

These include auditory exclusion or impaired
hearing, tunnel vision where our peripheral
vision closes down amongst various other
effects."

Whether MMA training helps in the world of street self defence?
Stewart Mcgill, one of the UK's very
foremost Krav Maga practitioners and founder
of the 'Urban Krav Maga' system, about his
views on whether MMA training helps in the Stewart Mcgill :In Action!

"Previously, I covered some ways in which
RBSDS (Reality based self defence systems)
can benefit from some exposure to MMA...

Training in a reality-based system can also
afford considerable benefits to the MMA
practitioner looking to broaden their self
defence game...

A good RBSDS will cover the following, most
of which you will not get from MMA:

1. Handling the pre-fight 'interview' stage:
positioning your fence, picking up clues on
when it's about to kick off, pre-emptive
strikes etc. Stewart Mcgill : in Action!

2. Defending attacks and threats from weapons:
knives,sticks, handguns etc.

3. Use of improvised weapons

4. Dealing with multiple attackers

5. Fighting somebody much bigger - or smaller -
than yourself: both can be problematic if you're
used to working with partners in the same weight
category.

5. Appropriate striking to joints, eyes, groin
etc

A good RBSDS should always get across the
principle of appropriate disengagement in what
could be the most important 5-10 seconds of your
life; this principal is important in a REAL fight
where priorities are clearly distinct to those in
a 3 x 5 minute-round MMA contest...

The key to surviving a REAL confrontation can
often be to get your attack in quickly and get
out fast...

So if you find yourself on the deck in a pub
fight with the bad guy raining down punches on
you, try to kick him away and get up IMMEDIATELY
rather than take him into a closed guard and
applying a kimura (though this may be Plan B).

Either way your objective is to minimise time
on the ground and the consequent risk of the
barstool around your head.

Similarly if you force an attacker to the
ground with a punch it would generally not be
wise to follow this up by seeking to obtain
'full mount' and PUNISH him.

Not only may this present problems with respect
to legality and reasonable use of force, but
the aggressor may have a blade and/or mates
in the area who are keen to get involved.

So to summarise, in reality use appropriate,
direct and effective force to neutralise the
threat and then get out."
KRAV MAGA TRAINING • How to win faster a street fight ?

The news is full of savage things that
gangs are doing to each other and to
non-members alike...
A while back just outside Dublin,
some kid that was dumb enough to go
breaking and entering on gang territory
got the Ottoman treatment: the gang
HACKED off three of his fingers.
Why am I mentioning this?
Because gang crime is on the rise again,
and there are places you just don't want
to be these days.

These places are ones you don't want to
walk through at night...and if you do,
you certainly DON'T want to do it while
carrying money, while making eye contact
with anyone, or while alone.

As this latest wave of gang crime
continues to rise, remember to stay
alert.

Four things to watch for that indicates
a potential criminal: "Demeanor, Dress,
Drink, and Drugs.

By teaching yourself to look out for the
four 'Ds', you can identify 90% of the people
on the street who are likely to get in your
face.
I read a first-hand account of what it
was like to be in one of their simulations,
and the one thing that came through
crystal-clear is that adrenaline is a
b*tch.

Even when you know that it's just a
rehearsal, you can't keep your body under
control when a 'real' knife is being held
to your throat...

The lass giving the account recites how
she was forcibly separated from her
husband, sat next to a stranger, and
realized that even though it was an
acknowledged setup, she STILL found
herself in a panic wondering if he was
OK and what was happening to him.

If that's what happens to someone who
DOES know it's all a setup, you can
imagine what it's like for someone who
is actually in that situation.

Try and find someone who is willing
to train you in a way that makes your
body feel like a situation is real.

Seems that there's a Krav Maga academy that is
hosting simulated airplane hijackings
for the purpose of showing people what
it's ACTUALLY like when sh*t gets real.
I read a first-hand account of what it

So you got to take Krav Maga Lessons and train you in a way that makes your
body feel like a situation is real.

Attacks are aimed at the most vulnerable parts of the body, and training is not limited to techniques that avoid severe injury; some even permanently injure or cause death to the opponent. Drills provide maximum safety to students by the use of protective equipment and the use of reasonable force.

Students learn to defend against all variety of attacks and are taught to counter in the quickest and most efficient way.

Ideas in Krav Maga include:

Counter attacking as soon as possible (or attacking pre-emptively).
Targeting attacks to the body's most vulnerable points, such as: the eyes, neck or throat, face, solar plexus, groin, ribs, knee, foot, fingers, etc.
Maximum effectiveness and efficiency in order to neutralize the opponent as quickly as possible.
Maintaining awareness of surroundings while dealing with the threat in order to look for escape routes, further attackers, objects that could be used to defend or help attack, and so on.

Training can also cover situational awareness to develop an understanding of one's surroundings, learning to understand the psychology of a street confrontation, and identifying potential threats before an attack occurs. It may also cover ways to deal with physical and verbal methods to avoid violence whenever possible.

-Imrich Lichtenfeld:

Since In the mid-1930s when anti-Semitic riots began to threaten the Jews of
Bratislava. Lichtenfeld became the leader of a group of Jewish boxers
and wrestlers who took to the streets to defend Jewish neighborhoods
against the growing numbers of national socialist party and anti-Semitic
thugs. Lichtenfeld quickly discovered, however, that actual fighting
was very different from competition fighting, and although boxing and
wrestling were good sports, they were not always practical for the
aggressive and brutal nature of street combat. It was then that he
started to re-evaluate his ideas about fighting and started developing
the skills and techniques that would eventually become Krav Maga.

Some of the first students to receive a black belt in Lichtenfeld's civilian Krav Maga Association of 1st Dan, were: Eli Avikzar, Eyal Yanilov, Raphy Elgrissy, Meni Ganis, Haim Zut, Shmuel Kurzviel, Haim Hakani, Shlomo Avisira, Vicktor Bracha, Yaron Lichtenstein, Avner Hazan, Haim Gidon and Miki Asulin.
Today best Kram Maga Expert practioners in the world are :

Haim Gidon
The worst thing you can do in Self Defense is Nothing!

We put a lot of thought into what
happens when a BIG thuggy brute gets in
our face and sometimes, it's easy for
us to forget that there are a lot of
scallywags out there that aren't
necessarily drunk and looking to bloody
someone up for fun.
Sometimes, it really is more important
to do SOMETHING than it is to do exactly
the RIGHT thing.

Take this kid in Iowa who was nearly
kidnapped a couple weeks ago.

He wasn't a fighter, he was a teenager.

He wasn't in karate or anything like
that but his dad taught him the SINGLE
most important lesson in all of self-defence.

What is that?

"The worst thing you can do is nothing."
Some dude pulled up in front of this
15-year-old kid, wearing a baseball cap
and tried to grab him and drag him into
the van.

Kid balled up his fist and hammered his
would-be kidnapper in the nose and then
SLAMMED him in the gut.

And like every good self-defence story
SHOULD end, the kid took the hell off
right then and there.

No looking for an opening, he landed
the hits he needed to land to get
away, and he got the hell away.

Good job, kid. Succeeding like that
under conditions as stressful as an
attempted kidnapping is something that
ANY of us should be proud of if it
ever happened to us.

Overcoming fear and Womens self defence .

Fear is a killer...for a few different
reasons.

Getting over your fear of pain is a
BIG part of making it through a conflict
that is going to cause some pain.

But fear CAN mess you up in other ways,
too.

You may have heard in the news that
Dappy, former singer for N-Dubz, SLAPPED
the crap out of a fan a few weeks back.

The CCTV of the incident is pretty
damning. The guy was off to the side
of Dappy, a few big bruisers presumably
belonging to the singer standing around,
and all the sudden Dappy just reaches out
and WHOLLOPS the dude in the face.

His defense? "I was scared that I was
gonna get stabbed."

Now, to his credit, this is not entirely
unreasonable...he's been stabbed a few
times before, and the guy he slapped HAD
been calling him out a few times across
the evening.

But still. That fear, that driving fear
of a non-existent knife blade, put Dappy
in court and ended up with him paying
the dude some eight hundred quid as an
enforced apology.

Not because Dappy was afraid to get into
a fight -- clearly --but because he was
afraid that if he DIDN'T strike first,
he would get stuck.

He needs to heed the words of Miyamoto
Musashi: "Regardless of combat
circumstances, you must always remain calm``.
are EVEN stupider.

That's a dangerous thing to say, but
it's a conclusion I've come to after
years of studying the self-defence
world.

Take, for example, the court case of these
five teenagers in Liverpool who stabbed
a rival gang member to death.

The stupidity is STRONG with these ones.

Starting with the fact that they stabbed
the dude to death in revenge for a crime
he had nothing to do with, but that can
be written off as typical gang-think.

Then you have the fact that they went
and bragged about what they did on
Facebook. How STUPID do you have to be?

Then, it came out in the court case
against them that every one of them is
literally stupid.

To be precise, "All of the gang were later
assessed as having reading or verbal
skills at levels normally seen in younger
children."

This isn't to say that criminals AREN'T
dangerous in fact, in a lot of ways, it's
their stupidity that makes them dangerous.

But, as Lee Morrison says, "The result
of the body's instinctive reaction to
the threat of combat is that we are
now reduced to the intelligence of a dog."

Don't let them DRAG you down to their
level by scaring the wits out of you.

bearing' that started in the USA.

This "game" consists of one person,
egged on by a group of friends that hide
or stand casually nearby, who walks up
to a complete stranger and attempts to
KNOCK them out with a single sucker
punch...

It's still pretty rare all around, but
the fact that it's made its way from the
streets of Detroit and New York into a
couple of smaller towns .

It won't be long before you hear about
it happening in other parts of the
World...

What to do about it?

Same thing as always: be alert, and DON'T
look like a good victim. Even if you're
a little person, stand tall, make eye
contact, and let them know you're alert.

The last thing these morons want is to
NOT knock you out -- so all you have to
do is make it look like you don't go
down easy.

Remember If your gut says that someone is
probably going to attack you, you SHOULD
listen to it....
Have you ever been bullied?

If not - that's good for you.

If yes - sorry to say but the
chances of you being mugged just
went up.

Let me explain the logic.

From their early days kids
learn to pick on those who
LOOK and act weak.

Bullies don't go for the strong,
popular kids. They mess with
the introverted ones, the "black
sheep" one might say.

Even if school days are over,
it is important to understand
the reasons behind bullying.

Why? Because muggers, thugs,
hooligans and bandits apply
the SAME principles when
selecting their victim.

There is a VERY important and
often overlooked aspect of
bullying...

BODY LANGUAGE!

Proud, confident men with good
posture and strong eye contact
seem more intimidating to others.

Don't be afraid to take space.
Practice your gait and posture.
Be steady and DON'T rush.

Important people do not need
to rush. Others will wait for them.

Do you know why some guys carry
their arms in a way to appear wider?
This makes them seem more intimidating.

Just like some frogs suck in air
and expand when threatened.

The "invisible lats" syndrome is actually
NOT that bad.

Try to develop strong lateral muscles
at the gym. Then you can flex at any
time to instantly LOOK wider and
tougher.

Developing these subtle body language
traits might seem unnatural at first.

If so, keep faking it until you make it.

Some call it "alpha male" body
language. People don't want to mess
with the "alpha male".

Also, try to slightly tilt your chin
upwards. This posture shows extreme
confidence and commands respect.

A good thing with circuit training is
that you can do these workouts in super short
time. You do not need to be pounding treadmills
for hours.

Street fights don't last as long as a marathon
so why put yourself through that sort of routine?
Ask most seasoned runners - they will probably
spend 20 minutes telling you how the body will
pick up injuries.

Short high intensity exercise is the key
to weight management and fat burning. Obviously a
sensible nutrition plan is also essential.

So what are the benefits of these types of
workouts?

You can go on burning calories up to 48 hours
later. Note - steady paced cardio exercise will
not do this.

A university study showed nine times more body fat
can be BURNT this way than through traditional
exercise methods i.e. jogging.

It can rev up your body's metabolism to help burn
fat more efficiently.

You can do these routines anywhere - you don't
need special equipment.

However, you have to be totally prepared to
work very hard! There are many great routines you
can adapt to achieve fat burn and also sky rocket
your fitness levels.

A Japanese expert came up with a form of short,
explosive exercise called Tabata Intervals. The
Tabata Intervals can be varied but the basic one
works on 20 seconds of fast, explosive exercise
followed by 10 seconds of rest. You can repeat
these as often as you want.

Try a series over 4 minutes. It doesn't sound
like much but if you are honestly pushing to your
maximum the intervals will blow you away."

Self Defence Krav Maga close Combat *Actions and Reactions...

I was watching some footage of actual
street fights the other day and found
that, when you look at most street attacks
they have a common pattern. I mean these
IDIOTS come at you in predictable ways.
Throwing punches, kicks, or using some
kind of weapon.

All these different types of attack can be
dangerous to you. Some more than others.

We asked Jimmy Kelly about how to respond
to a lashing kick...

Jimmy is an ex boxer who has worked bar and
club doors for 17 years. He has experienced
confrontations MANY times and features in
'Real and Tested - Effective Pressure
Points' training series.

"Beware of this type of attack. Very often
they start talking or shouting before kicking you.
The NATURAL thing is to step aback and it's easy
to do. You don't think about it.

The power in a kick is right at the end. Going
backwards helps them and hurts YOU.

I prefer to do the unexpected and move INTO
my attacker. Get in and neutralise their strike.
Then hit them with as MANY strikes as needed to
END the fight. Hit vital areas such as jaw, eyes
etc.

If they seem to try a Thai style kick, I will
respond with a Thai style block which will
potentially cause pain to them."

Andre Martin (who has trained special forces
units) advises caution UNLESS you have trained
in a martial art that uses kicks.

However, he points out that MOST people,
including those who had too much to drink will
not kick fast.

As they attempt to lash out, you will notice
easily and time a push kick. You kick as they try
to do the same, using your front leg.

It will knock them off balance and you can follow
up quickly or move out of there !

Just
ask Luis Suárez!!

All travelling football fans get a bad
name when there has been trouble from
a minority. Everyone mentions it over
and over again. It's often COMPLETE over
reaction.

What I'm trying to say is that although
it's real, the media turn it into something
else.

Remember the boxer Mike Tyson in his heyday?
They had him marked as a MONSTER.Now he
had issues but they became a weapon of
intimidation with his earliest opponents. He
seemed invincible. Yet the moment he was
knocked down and defeated for the first time,
that reputation was DESTROYED.

Now, if you have the misfortune to be attacked
you won't know anything about the stranger - and
that's good. You WON'T quit mentally at the
"serious bad ass" or "hard as nails" name they
might have collected. Because you're ignorant
about it and will not weaken and freeze up like
you might have done - had you known.

My point here is that very often the biggest
advantage a local 'hard man' has is his
reputation, NOT his fighting skills.

How to escape from Headlock ? Headlock can be a POWERFUL finishing technique when executed correctly!

It seems violent on one level. Cleverly
managed audience entertainment on another.
They cheer anyone who is local and boo
the outsider.

If they are NOT twisting the opponent's
legs, they get an arm around their neck or
head.

It just so happens, this is one form of common
street encounter. Headlocks. They can cause you
all sorts of problems PRETTY quickly.

Side headlocks are something we recently put
to Kevin O'Hagan. He's spent 30 years in Martial
Arts and is Founder of the 'Special Forces
Fighting System'.

Here's what he told us...

"To the skilled exponent the side headlock
can be a POWERFUL finishing technique when
executed correctly.

Fortunately MOST untrained fighters will just
roughly squeeze or hold the head or neck. If
you react in the early stages of the hold
you can have a good chance of escape - even
from a MUCH larger and stronger opponent.

The longer you leave it,the HARDER it will
become to escape...

As the side headlock is applied you can
immediately drop your inside hand up and over
the attackers shoulder and pull back on the
hair, CLAW the eyes, or hook the mouth; at the
same time your other hand can grab and squeeze
the testicles or pinch the flesh high on
the upper thigh.

If the opponent is TOO heavy to lift fall
back with them and immediately start to strike
any vital body part that is open. Then escape.

If your head is pulled tightly into the opponent's
chest, turn your head and SINK your teeth into the
pectoral muscle and bite hard.

Dropping to your knee and bringing up a stiff
forearm blow to the groin from the rear can
complete the move."

If someone is going to threaten with a knife in the back they are going to have a more defensive posture, rather than the wide open posture your attacker has in the video.
At a minimum the empty hand will be in a defensive posture and prepare for a response.

Better to train against someone with experience in knife attacks and cover all attackers than a very inexperienced knife attacker. :-)

Punching people around the head without
gloves hurts your knuckles and SHOULDN'T
be encouraged in self-defence.

2. In a real fight you shouldn't go to
ground unless forced there; furthermore if
you end up on the ground your priority should
be to get up as SOON as possible, not to roll
about on the floor setting up a submission or
hold somebody in a defensive guard.

3. The reality of the street i.e. biting,
shots to the eyes and groin, use of edged
weapons renders a lot of MMA impractical,
particularly on the ground.

There's something to be said for all this and
as an RBSDS teacher I'm instinctively
sympathetic to much of it; however, I've
trained a little in MMA and been in a few real
rows so there's an important balance to be
struck here."
