Since I haven't updated in a while, I thought I would post some pics from my "Under the Rust" show in Nov. It was my first official show since I've started playing live again and it was really fun. I had the pleasure to play to great people and a packed house with some musicians I have dubbed "The Starlight Wanderers".

The scene after the song was recorded.

I lost my dad in the morning 3 years ago today (there was a full lunar eclipse the same evening). I wrote and recorded this song the night before (well into the early morning actually). It's called "Now that you're gone". It is done in a style that my Dad would have loved. He was a big fan of old time country music.

This one will be re-recorded and put onto the my new CD but you can download this version on my music page.

On this day, 42 years ago (if you can believe that), on January 30 1969, the Beatles played live for the last time on the roof of Apple's London office. Here the videos of that performance:

The Beatles were formed in 1960 and Ringo didn't join until 1962 and they released "Love Me Do", their first single, in 1963. They made such a huge impact in such a short period of time....It always amazes me...

"Angel Kin" an old/new song that changed my life.

This song is and always will be dedicated to my grandfather Martin Spreen. I just got a copy of it after quite a few years. It's called "Angel Kin". I recorded it 11 years ago today (we started late on Jan. 21 and ended early in the morning on Jan. 22) after my Grandfather's funeral. It was a day I'll never forget and a day that changed my life forever....

I was in the studio recording this song in Selkirk with a friend Don Rivais (cool guitar player). I wrote the song over the previous week and went in to record it. A couple of friends of mine, Big J Jablonski (singer from Bad House Highway) and Julian Gentle, (another crazy guitar player) heard what was happening and decided to stop in to hang out with a case of beer. All three ended up doing some recording on the song (the stomp and clap at the end). We left and I got pulled over after I had 4 beers in the 5 hours I was there. I got pulled over over by the police and they gave my a DUI. The officers and my lawyer (who must have been so happy to get a call and 3:30 am from me) both said that I didn't seem drunk, but the breathalyzer said I was over and well....that's the law. I didn't have a license for 3 years after that.
Now I know that doesn't sound like a great story but at the time of the incident, I was having a rough time personally and really needed a change. The DUI gave me that. Since I was living in Selkirk and working in Winnipeg at the time, I had to move. This gave my a chance to get away from everything that was going on in my life and kind of start new. I had a real chance to re-discover who I really was. Without going into all the details, I can tell you that it turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me. It kind of set me free in a lot ways.....

So Grandpa, as your life ended...I got a new start to mine. Those were some tough times for me and I may not have realized it at the then, but I sure as hell do now. Everything that I have gained in the past 11 years ( love, children, friends, university, and becoming a better man) is because of that day......I am eternally grateful....I know you are always with me......

"Picture" My new song and video

I've got a new song and video called "Picture". I wrote it the other day and got an idea for a video so I recorded both video and audio at the same time. In fact I came up with part as I was recording it. It's far from perfect but I kind of like that. Sort of a like a reflection of myself (haha). It was done here in my my writing studio in Winnipeg. Hope you like it.

The Beauty of It All....A new song

Here is a new song I wrote not to long ago. It's called The Beauty of It all. Actually I was writing it while I recorded this. I was at my cabin in Grand Beach, Manitoba, Canada. It was late at night and there was this huge wind storm so I grabbed my guitar and headed down to the lake in my van. It was way to windy to play outside. The waves were huge and it was an inspiring night. It helped me get this out. I am hoping to put this one on my new CD if I ever decide to focus and get it done....haha. Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

My dad past away about 3 weeks ago. He has been fighting cancer for 13 years and it turned into an aggressive strain in November. He deteriorated very fast over the last 3 weeks and it finally got him. It's hard to believe that we'll never see him again. He will be missed dearly...

Something has happened to me since dad died. I've found a renewed faith in people. Everyone has been so kind and generous. It totally caught me off guard. People I haven't seen in a long time just seemed to come out of the woodworks to show their support. One girl at work even took up a collection from our staff to help make up for the time I had off work. It actually made me cry.

I've changed now, I can feel it. I have a brand new respect for people. I can tell you that it feels good to be reminded that people aren't always just out for themselves. It also reminds me that maybe there is more that I can do for others in times of trouble. I think it's important for us all to be reminded of that. We've all had someone help us when we've really needed it. Do you remember how it made you feel? I do, and I will return the favor as often as I can to let others know that they aren't alone in this journey (sometimes battle) of life. Are you feeling down. Go help someone, I guarantee it will make you feel good.

Thanks for another lesson Dad. I don't think I'll ever stop learning from you. I love you!

Not Handing Over the Cash! The Unpaid Parking Ticket Experiment (Part One)

Have you ever received a letter in the mail saying you owe money for something you can't remember. What did you do. Did you pay it because you often forget about things like this. We really need to be cautious about these sorts of things. There have been a lot of money scams around. I think this one is but you should always question things like this (especially if you can't remember them) or it could end up to cost you a lot of money

I don't know how this will work out on the financial side of things, but this little experiment should be entertaining by the time it's over...........There might even be a lesson in it too.

So my city is trying to collect money from me for two parking tickets which they said I didn't pay. Here's the funny thing. They are from 1995 and 1996 and they've never bothered to contact me until December of last year. Did I pay these tickets. To tell you the truth, I can't recall. As far as I know, I had payed all the tickets I'd ever received and that's what I told them when I sent the notice back to them. Well, sure enough they sent me a letter back, asking if I have proof of payment. Hmmmmm...........Proof of payment from 11 years ago?

Here is the letter I wrote them. I don't think they'll take it seriously but if they really want to be that ridiculous then two can play at that game. When it comes to being ridiculous, they have no idea who they're messing with (just ask my wife)!

Re: Parking Tickets : xxxxxxx and xxxxxxxx

I received a notice in the mail that I apparently have two out standing parking tickets from 10 and 11 years ago. You stated that unpaid parking tickets prior to November 15, 2005 were transferred to you from the Winnipeg Police services. I replied back stating that I paid the parking tickets as per instructions on the tickets. You then replied, asking for proof of payment. Well, I don’t keep my receipts for 10 to 11 years and I can’t say that I know a single person who does. Do You? Ok. I’m not trying to be rude. It’s just a little ridiculous to expect that someone would keep a receipt of payment on a parking ticket for that long. You also sent me a “Statutory Declaration” in case I didn’t have proof of payment which needs to be signed in front of a commissioner of oaths. Unfortunately, I’m not able, or willing, to take time off work to come in and sign these papers, as this would cost me too much money in wages. I have enclosed the “Declaration” signed by me in hopes that this will suffice.

Now I have to ask, if I didn’t pay these parking tickets, why would it take 10 to 11 years to contact me. I have only had two other places of residence since then and I certainly haven’t been hiding. In fact, I’ve had a parking ticket or two since then (which I also paid in full) and received no correspondence stating that I owed money for previous parking tickets. I’m sure you can understand my frustration in this matter and my unwillingness to take this seriously enough to take time off work. I cannot pay (either by sending you money or by losing a day of wages) for something I believe I’ve already paid for. Especially without proof! Do you happen to have a physical copy of the tickets in question, or something more than just a letter stating that I owe you money from 10 years ago? If you do, I would gladly review them with you. I would be a fool to give someone money just because they said I owed it to them. I’m sure you can understand this as well.

Please don’t take this as a personal attack (insert name here), I’m sure you’re fantastic at your job. I just hope that you can look at this from my point of view and understand why I will not be making any payments toward this account. And So….

I Kevin Korol on this day of March 22, 2007, declare to the best of my knowledge, that I have voluntarily paid in full the two parking tickets in question (stated above) as per instructions on the actual tickets.

A frustrated citizen!

So.........that's the letter. I really do wonder how they will respond. That's what the experiment is about I guess. I will be sure to post more about this when I hear back from them. I just wish I could see this persons face when she reads it. I wonder if they get a lot of these!

Just for the record. If I do get absolute proof that I didn't pay these tickets I'll pay them, but I sure won't just hand over my hard earned bucks because someone says I should!
