Article in The Chronicle of Education, "Who Gets to See Published Research?", looks at the proposed Research Works Act and questions if taxpayers help pay for research should they be able to freely access the results in journal articles.

From the Science section of the New York Times: "Cracking Open the Scientific Process". This article takes a look at how research is currently done and proposes some new models of making the process and results more open. Mentioned in the article is the book, "Reinventing Discovery: The New Era of Networked Science" by Michael Nielsen, which can be checked out from the TSRI Library.

New Library Catalog & Journal List

The Kresge Library now offers the next-generation catalog and search tool, powered by the OCLC WorldCat Local database software. The new catalog provides the library user both a local view of the library materials held at the libraries in La Jolla and Jupiter, as well as a global view of the collective library collections around the world, allowing users to scale searches using the power of the Web to create the information service that best matches their needs.

The new catalog is the main tool the Kresge Library provides to identify links to e-journals and e-books and print books available for loan. It also searches the full Medline database in the same search command. The catalog provides easy-to-use links to the familiar SFX menu and ILLiad request tools. Also available are embedded tools for citing and exporting citations to EndNote and creating and sharing lists.

The KresgeLibrary has also launched the next-generation A-Z E-journal List, powered by SFX software, the same company that provides the SFX@TSRI tool.

Kresge Library staff are pleased to announce that the new version of EndNote, X5, is available for Windows. The Mac version will be released by Thomson-Reuters in late August or early September.

A PDF view in the Quick view panel, located below the library view

Update a reference using a new “Find Reference Updates” tool

Custom 6 field is now assigned as the NIHMSID field

Substitute fields automatically when a chosen field is blank (this will be useful for citing NIHMSIDs when the PMCID is not available yet)

In the spring release of SciFinder, CAS has two new features of note:

SciFinder mobile: Access SciFinder from your phone. Search options are limited (no structure searching), but can be useful to view your results on the go. To try it out, go to http://scifinder.cas.org/mobile

SciPlanner: A new synthesis planning tool that allows you to create a retrosynthetic analysis with reactions and references.

Check out the two week trial to JoVE, a video protocols journal. The "Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a peer reviewed, PubMed indexed journal devoted to the publication of physical, chemical, medical and life science research in a video format." JoVE aims to make learning protocols easier and save researchers time. The typical JoVE entry contains a video and a written description of the protocol.

ChemBioDraw 12.0.3 for Mac available

CambridgeSoft has released ChemBioDraw 12.0.3 for Mac. This version addresses bugs with version 12.0.2, including problems with the registration screen. This release can be downloaded at:

A CambridgeSoft login is required to download this update. Select "ChemBioDraw" as the Product. Follow the Mac installation instructions to install the update.

CrossFire client retirement

Access to Beilstein will continue via Reaxys.

ILLiad Holiday Schedule

Turnaround time for requested articles and books via ILLiad will be much slower due to the holidays. Most of our lending partners are universities which are usually closed from December 20th through January 3rd. That is few, if any, libraries will be open to fill our requests. We will still be processing your ILLiad requests on the non-holiday workdays but expect delays in receiving your articles.

ScienceDirect downtime Nov. 13th

ScienceDirect Journals are expected to offline and unavailable for approximately 9 hours this Saturday, November 13th due to system maintenance and upgrades. The publisher informs us that the downtime will occur between 4:30AM to 1:30PM Pacific Standard Time. They apologize for the inconvenience.

Important: Upcoming changes will affect your access to SciFinder at TSRI.

On December 1, the client software that you may be using now will no longer work. As of December 1, all access to SciFinder at TSRI will be via the web version only. If you have not already done so, please register for your account on the web version now at:
http://www.scripps.edu/library/scifinderwebregistration.html

After you create and authenticate your SciFinder web account, you can access the web version of SciFinder at: https://scifinder.cas.org

We understand that if you currently prefer searching SciFinder via the client, you may not welcome this change. However, the change is necessary because CAS will retire the client version of SciFinder on June 30, 2011. We want to be sure that all TSRI researchers are comfortable with the web version before the client software disappears. (See the link below for the official CAS announcement:

* For structure searching, you will need to download a Java plug-in for your browser (available after you login to the web version).
