In an effort to play more, and have fun doing it, I decided to join in on the RvB pew pew good times in Lonetrek. Application entered and accepted, I’m in the corp, time for some assplodey space ship fun, right?

Not so much for my first day, because I’m a lame individual, it seems.

Day 1, I log in. I realize I need to make some overview changes, check to see who we are currently at war with, check local for any reds, don’t see any, good, and take my Drake out to a local asteroid field to make sure I have all my windows and target locations and the like set up the way I want it, and to make an “RvB PVP” tab.

Hit the asteroid belt, do a little bit of configuring, and my computer crashes because of a clock interrupt on one of my cores. I’ve been having a problem with the third core on my CPU, thought it was fixed, guess I was wrong, turned it off again, such is life.

Anywho, I reboot the PC and while I’m waiting I start looking through the forums on my iPad. My intention was to start moving ships around with Louis, make some tacticals with Ned, and move out to Red Fed HQ.

Instead, I fell asleep.

I guess life is just an evil thing some times.

I also neglected to add a skill to Louis’ training queue, so now he’s not even training. Must fix that shortly.

When I first looked at this app, my initial thougt was, people still use the Time Code Bazaar on the forums? Isn’t that why we have PLEX?

Turns out, some people do. I’m guessing maybe people who can’t buy from one of the authorized ETC retailers? I don’t know, but people do.

In case you don’t know, the Time Code Bazaar has been around since (a certain period of time) and is where you could sell Game Time Codes (like the current EVE Time Codes, only slightly different) which came in 30 day, 60 day, and 90 day flavors. They are now only available as 60 day codes. Basically, you could spend real money, buy a GTC, sell it on the bazaar for ISK, and you got a nice shot to the wallet and someone else got to play for “free”. Much like how things work today with ETC and PLEX, which is why when people were crying when PLEX were first introduced into the game I liked to point them to the Time Code Bazaar.

About the app…

The entire app consists of 3 screens.

It’s a very simple and straightforward app. It isn’t flashy doesn’t try to cram anything extra in there that isn’t needed, but at the same time I am left scratching my head wordering why we need ISKies. Maybe someone has a use for it, but as for me? Deleted:

Since the death of Capsuleer, there have been numerous apps appear on the iOS app store for character tracking in EVE. Some good, some ok, some better left not mentioning. In addition to the character tracking apps, there are also a few trading apps and one that deals completely with reprocessing. I want to try and collect all of the apps in one place, with links to them in iTunes, and perhaps even provide a review of each.

Since there are as many as there are, the reviews are going to be spread out, hopefully posting one a day, until I have hit everything out there. Today, we are just starting with the list of what I am aware of.

If you know of apps that I’m missing, please let me know in the comments and I will get them added, download them, and hopefully put up a review.

I’m going to divide them out between all in one, straight character trackers, and the few “other” apps that are available.

All links should open directly in iTunes and are free unless otherwise noted.

Lots of people are still unironically asking this question. ‘Why the hate for power MTs when PLEX are already power MTs?’”

Malcanis:

Think about what happens with the PLEX transaction. The originating player buys a GTC from CCP or some other retailer and redeems it into 2 PLEX. At this point CCP count their product obligation as fulfilled; the player has receive what he has paid for, regardless of what happens to it in the future. So far, this is pretty much identical to any other MT: gief publisher monies = can haz in-game itemz. But what can you actually do with your PLEX?

Well first you can add it on to your own account, which enables you to play the game for another 30 days. Of course this isn’t really a MT in any way that people care about, just a slightly roundabout way to pay a subscription, but I presume we can agree that this promotes gameplay, insofar as it means that the original purchaser will play EVE for +30 days.

Secondly, you can sell it to another player for ISK. This is where it gets interesting, and where it starts to look like RMT and so forth. The most important difference is that the ISK exchange is between two players, not between a player and CCP. This sounds too obvious and trivial to be worth mentioning, but so many people don’t seem to understand how important this subtle difference is. Player A sells a PLEX to player B for 400M ISK. (In and of itself, this is a player interaction just like any other market trade, BTW) The amount of ISK ingame stays the same. The ISK that player A receives, he receives apparently without doing any work for it, but the important thing is that work was done for that ISK. So player B had to do missions, convert LP, play the Jita market, risk his ship ratting, run a research POS and sell BPCs or do whatever other activity he engaged in to raise that 400M ISK. If Player A wasn’t lazy or time-restricted or whatever other reason he’d rather pay $17.50 than make 400M for himself, he would have done all those activities. As it is, Player B did it on his behalf, but those activities still had to take place, with all the normal implications for wider interaction with the EVE economy and community. To the rest of EVE there is no functional difference between player A selling a PLEX to player B, and player A using his ISK making alt AB to make 400M.

Additionally, the value received is determined directly by player supply and demand. The amount of ISK you can get for your $17.50 is always dynamically set to exactly what the EVE playerbase as a whole thinks it should be. If CCP sold ISK directly, they’d pick a value (and you can bet your ass it would be hilariously wrong) and stick to it.

Conversely, if Player A was simply able to buy ISK directly from CCP then all that activity would not take place. In addition, it is quite possible that Player B simply wouldn’t be playing, as for many people, being able to play for free is all that keeps them subscribed. Even if they kept their mains going, the number of “ISK making alts” would plummet, as the Player B’s partly have them to pay for PLEX. So Player C cant buy his faction ammo from B, sell his stuff at Jita to B, gank B’s ratting Drake or do whatever other interaction might take place, or at least has less opportunity to do so. Player interaction is reduced, player population is reduced, gameplay is reduced.

Additionally, because the amount of ISK you can buy is limited by the amount of ISK that other players are willing to spend on PLEX, there’s a hard cap on how much ISK you can buy this way. It’s a pretty high cap, but it’s there. If CCP sold ISK directly, they’d sell it at the rate which maximised the amount of money people give them, which obviously means that they’d have every incentive to sell it for ever cheaper prices, since they can spawn as much as they want for free. Hello galloping inflation! Apart from anything else, the last thing the EVE economy needs is another massive ISK fountain like CCP selling ISK for a buck a billion.

It’s even worse if CCP directly sell items; not only are all the effects above seen, but instead of A using his purchased ISK to buy stuff, supporting all the supply chains that create ships, modules, etc, he bypasses all that and just gets an item magically appearing in his Hangar instead. Although from A’s immediate point of view, he doesn’t see a whole lot of difference, suddenly EVE has a great deal of things less to do, and less to care about. Why make ISK when the best ships are in the NEX store? Why do invention when the best modules are in the NEX store? Why run missions when the best ammo and implants are in the NEX store? Why run plexes when Y- and Z-type stuff is in the NEX store? Why mine? Why run a moon?

And when there’s less point doing all of those things, then why bother to PvP about them anyway? EVE devolves towards being a shallow, mindless shooter.

I’ve done this in the past, used to have a very large 100GB partition dedicated to Windows 7 that I also used with Parallels so I could run important work programs, but which I deleted because somehow I have used over 400GB on my HDD now (what in the hell is all that shit?), but with the release of Incarna, and the paltry 10FPS I get when using CQ on the Mac client with the lowest settings possible, I decided to make a small 20GB partition, spend about 2 hours downloading EVE for Windows, and install it to see if there was much of a performance difference.

I was surprised by what I saw.

For starters, I use an early 2009 13″ MacBook. It is not a MacBook Pro, just the lower end model. Nothing special, and the GPU isn’t anything spectacular. It has alway run EVE well, and I could even run four accounts simultaneously on the lowest settings, which is where I usually kept things anyway because, while EVE is pretty on the full settings, I always preferred having 50FPS over 15FPS.

I have shader model 3 support with the Apple drivers for my video card, so no problems there, although I have seen that a lot of people with older Macs have experienced issues where there video card supports SM3 under Windows, but not under OS X, and therefore if they want to play EVE they must have a Bootcamp partition set up with Windows. To all the whiners about not having SM3 support, it’s been a year and a half, almost, since they said it would be required in the future. You’ve had time. But I digress.

So, set up Windows, installed the client, and fired it up to find…

The exact same performance. Approximately 40-50 FPS on mediumish settings when in space, about 12FPS on the lowest settings when in station.

This actually tells me two things:

They have actually increased performance on the Mac client (about damn time)

I don’t NEED to Bootcamp

Which leaves me with the question, should I Bootcamp?

In my opinion, no. I definitely should not.

Remember the Linux client? There were not enough users of the Linux client to make it worthwhile for CCP to continue support of it, so it went away. The less Mac users there are, the more likely the Mac client could eventually become deprecated, and then I would be forced to lose drive space to a Windows partition, which I hate, because I know I’ll need that space for something, since I’m almost like a damn pack rat.

If you have to Bootcamp to play the game because of SM3 support, please do, but if not, don’t. Seriously. We need to make sure the Mac client does not go the way of the dodo.

I don’t care to discuss these items, enough has been said already, I posted my thoughts about a portion of it on the forums, instead I have a better way to spend my time.

Having fun in EVE.

We all know about the massive protest in Jita, so I went with a couple Corp mates to check it out. We laughed and them, I grabbed a couple screenshots:

And then we all got bored and left. I did see Winterblink and Mark726 in system, but they were just there checking things out. It was funny when I mentioned to the Corp mates about Blinky that some of them had no idea who he was. I guess being an Internet spaceship celebrity doesn’t spill over to the newbs.

Once I was bored enough with that, I ran Level 4s with a Corp mate and talked with everyone on Teamspeak, strengthening the bonds and working on the whole whole making the new friends in game thing, because that is far more important than any leaked document or speculative rumor.

I’m not going anywhere. I still need to move into a wormhole with The Night Crew, and that should happen soon, I’ve been dragging my feet with real life garbage, but in all honesty, I think the past two weeks have just rekindled my desire to play more.

In today’s Dev Blog, CCP announced the inclusion of vanity items for a new currency called Aurum. Since then, there has been a lot of complaining on the Tweetfleet about the creation of a new currency and why not just use ISK which already exists. There is a simple reason, the price must remain stable.

The purchasing power of ISK, as we all know, fluctuates based off of the entirely player driven economy. I am not going to go into details as to why, because I am not an economist, but it does. Especially when it comes to the previously existing RMT in the game, PLEX. (RMT has been around far longer, but that is outside the scope of this post). In order to keep the ability to purchase vanity items with real money, the only possible way is with the introduction of a new currency in the game, and I get the feeling that this was done since EVE is played around the world, there are many different currencies around the world, and using the existing PLEX system is just far easier.

Personally, I don’t want to have to purchase vanity items on a sliding scale if the ISK faucets start to outweigh the ISK sinks, inflation runs rampant, and the value of my ISK bottoms out. I want to be able to know that, of the portion of my $17.50US that I just spent for a unicorn that farts rainbows, that rainbow farting unicorn will always cost me that exact same amount.

I think the problem, as stated by Mark726 is that people are trying to equate ISK to having a real world value. It doesn’t. While it may appear to from the purchasing and selling of PLEX in game, this is still an imaginary value based on in game market fluctuation. Aurum values, on the other hand, will have a static real world value for vanity items, and nothing else, or the CSM may do bad things

I could, and should, delve deeper into this, but I think I feel a boss breathing down my neck.

Aurum regulates the price of in game vanity items only by keeping the ration of PLEX to Aurum static. Nothing else.

In what can only be described as a daring move of the utmost stupidity, Angus McDecoy of Fly Reckless escaped from the station in Scheenins where Garheade and Chainer Cygnus of EVE Commune were holding him captive under a couch purportedly stolen from (and we can only assume violated many times over by) the Space Monkey Alliance.

While the ransom, and more (upwards of 7 billion isk), was collected, Garheade decided that he was not going to free Angus, and instead would keep him permanently under the couch.

Angus was able to escape in a Viator and immediately warped to the Jufvitte system to escape the clutches of Garheade and Chainer. Capsuleer Garomero was soon seen to be in pursuit of Angus. Forward scouts for EVE Commune were able to locate Angus in the Ouelletta system, and pursued him to the first asteroid belt in the system, where, with the assistance of Relicc, Tyen, Xindo, and Marcel Devereux, Garomero and Chainer destroyed his ship followed quickly by his pod.

After being podkilled, Angus immediately awoke in a station that I am sure is very far away from Scheenins, a free man.
