add a journal box and journaling on a photo in photoshop | a tutorial

i get asked this all the time so i thought i would put together a quick tutorial.

*using Photoshop CS5

1. Open Photo.

2. Add a New Layer.

3. With Marquee Tool, draw a box.

4. Fill with White using Paint Tool.

5. Lower Layer Opacity to approx 50%.

6. Select Type tool and write.

7. Flatten Layers.Voila!

i am so happy to be back reading.
my grandma was a reader. my mom is a reader. i am a reader. so far my girls are readers.
books are awesome! yes, i did just say that.

thanks to kayla aimee’s blog, i was inspired to read again.

my ILs gave me a kindle fire for christmas- seriously, one of the best gifts ever!
before that i was reading with the Kindle app on my droid and still read on phone now that i have the iPhone.

quick tips for taking better photos

1. Learn to shoot in Manual Mode.

2. Read your camera’s manual. And then read it again.

3. Remove distractions in your background.

4. Get in close to your subject and fill the frame.

5. Turn off your flash.

6. Shoot in the best possible light.

7. Practice, Practice, Practice.

8. Have fun!

i wanted to get something up for this week. i’ve been in full get.ready.for.maui.mode so these photos are from last week.
the girls are changing their baby’s diaper. do you think they are practicing for when baby brother gets here?
we have had diapers in this family for almost 5 years!
and just when we got rid of bottles…we are getting them back!
binkies at night for emmy still. i wonder if she will try to sneak baby brother’s?

10 on 10 | may edition

very excited for another edition of 10 on 10…

this was our second annual trip to the livermore wine country festival.
katelyn wasn’t too excited to go but with a little bribery (aka frozen yogurt) we talked her into going.
i think she ended up having a great time.
we met up with my mom and the elsons.
thank goodness for the breeze. otherwise it would have been smokin’ hot!
of course we had to enjoy some yummy fair food- polish sausage, corn dogs, french fries, freshly squeezed lemonade and frozen yogurt.
i thought bean had forgotten about her promised fro yo, but just as we were leaving she reminded us that she hadn’t had her fro you yet.
she loves adding all the yummy bits- rainbow sprinkles, m&ms and reeces pieces on top of chocolate fro yo. she like me to “mush” it all up for her.
emmy also LOVED her fro yo. on her swirl she got cookie bits, m&ms and reesec pieces. she ate every last drop of it!

it took a minute for katelyn to get into the spirit, but once she did she had a great time in the kids section with her friends.
they rode the swings and train and got their faces painted.
emmy is so outgoing and vivacious and got quite upset when at first we thought she was too short to ride the swings.
she ended up riding them 3 times.

Week in the Life 2012 edition

i am so grateful and happy to have taken on this project again.
it is a lot of work, but i think it is so important to document the little things. it is so easy in your busy world to let it all just slip by you. this project allowed me to really look and appreciate what i have. and darn! it is wonderful and full of love and laughter!

project notes:
documented 1 week of our lives
took about a week to complete the album
digital album
took photos with my iPhone, G11, mark ii and 7d
will print pages from Persnickety Prints and add to my Project Life album
will not create a Week 7 layout
used ALi E’s templates
and a lot of digital supplies from Weeds and Wildflowers
each day has a 2 page 12×12 spread with a 6×12 insert for journaling
sunday had tons of photos so i created an extra 12×12 page
i bought becky higgins 6×12 page protectors for the inserts
for the 6×12 journal insert i created it on a 12×12 layer and added a piece of coordinating patterned paper on the right. i will cut this sheet in half and the patterned paper will be on the back side on the 6×12 journal insert

welcome stella | 12 days old | brentwood newborn photographer

this little lady was precious and the perfect fit for my new princess crown.
at 12 days old she already knew what she wanted…mama and my cozy warm blanket. no basket or bowls please.
but she did let us accessorize her with ribbons, hats, bows, wraps. i am sure this is the beginning of a life time of dress up.

thank you torres family for letting me capture this wonderful, but fleeting moment in your daughter’s life.

KLP mommy + me mini sessions benefiting cookies for kids cancer

wow! what a stellar success KLP’s First Annual Mommy + Me Mini Sessions benefiting Cookies for Kids Cancer was!
my goal was 10 sign ups. i ended up getting 11 but 1 family rescheduled.

so…
10 families
2 grandmothers
11 mothers
17 children
newborn to college aged
10 girls
7 boys
1 unhappy child

$500 raised!
