I found this recent newsletter interesting and wanted to share it with my readers. I’m not advising for or against vaccines…. that’s an individual choice for each family, but the more information we have to help make those decisions, the better!

————————

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, February 14, 2012

Vitamin C Prevents Vaccination Side Effects; Increases Effectiveness

by Thomas E Levy, MD, JD

(OMNS, Feb 14, 2012) The routine administration of vaccinations continues to be a subject of controversy in the United States, as well as throughout the world. Parents who want the best for their babies and children continue to be faced with decisions that they fear could harm their children if made incorrectly. The controversy over the potential harm of vaccinating, or of not vaccinating, will not be resolved to the satisfaction of all parties anytime soon, if ever. This brief report aims to offer some practical information to pediatricians and parents alike who want the best long-term health for their patients and children, regardless of their sentiments on the topic of vaccination in general.

While there seems to be a great deal of controversy over how frequently a vaccination might result in a negative outcome, there is little controversy that at least some of the time vaccines do cause damage. The question that then emerges is whether something can be done to minimize, if not eliminate, the infliction of such damage, however infrequently it may occur.

Causes of Vaccination Side Effects

When vaccines do have side effects and adverse reactions, these outcomes are often categorized as resulting from allergic reactions or the result of a negative interaction with compromised immune systems. While either of these types of reactions can be avoided subsequently when there is a history of a bad reaction having occurred at least once in the past as a result of a vaccination, it is vital to try to avoid encountering a negative outcome from occurring the first time vaccines are administered.

Due to the fact that all toxins, toxic effects, substantial allergic reactions, and induced immune compromise have the final common denominator of causing and/or resulting in the oxidation of vital biomolecules, the antioxidant vitamin C has proven to be the ultimate nonspecific antidote to whatever toxin or excess oxidative stress might be present. While there is also a great deal of dispute over the inherent toxicity of the antigens that many vaccines present to the immune systems of those vaccinated, there is no question, for example, that thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative, is highly toxic when present in significant amounts. This then begs the question: Rather than argue whether there is an infinitesimal, minimal, moderate, or significant amount of toxicity associated with the amounts of thimerosal or other potentially toxic components presently being used in vaccines, why not just neutralize whatever toxicity is present as completely and definitively as possible?

Vitamin C is a Potent Antitoxin

In addition to its general antitoxin properties (Levy, 2002), vitamin C has been demonstrated to be highly effective in neutralizing the toxic nature of mercury in all of its chemical forms. In animal studies, vitamin C can prevent the death of animals given otherwise fatal doses of mercury chloride (Mokranjac and Petrovic, 1964). Having vitamin C on board prior to mercury exposure was able to prevent the kidney damage the mercury otherwise typically caused (Carroll et al., 1965). Vitamin C also blocked the fatal effect of mercury cyanide (Vauthey, 1951). Even the very highly toxic organic forms of mercury have been shown to be effectively detoxified by vitamin C (Gage, 1975).

Vitamin C Improves Vaccine Effectiveness

By potential toxicity considerations alone, then, there would seem to be no good reason not to pre- and post-medicate an infant or child with some amount of vitamin C to minimize or block the toxicity that might significantly affect a few. However, there is another compelling reason to make vitamin C an integral part of any vaccination protocol: Vitamin C has been documented to augment the antibody response of the immune system (Prinz et al., 1977; Vallance, 1977; Prinz et al., 1980; Feigen et al., 1982; Li and Lovell, 1985; Amakye-Anim et al., 2000; Wu et al., 2000; Lauridsen and Jensen, 2005; Azad et al., 2007). As the goal of any vaccination is to stimulate a maximal antibody response to the antigens of the vaccine while causing minimal to no toxic damage to the most sensitive of vaccine recipients, there would appear to be no medically sound reason not to make vitamin C a part of all vaccination protocols. Except in individuals with established, significant renal insufficiency, vitamin C is arguably the safest of all nutrients that can be given, especially in the amounts discussed below. Unlike virtually all prescription drugs and some supplements, vitamin C has never been found to have any dosage level above which it can be expected to demonstrate any toxicity.

Vitamin C Reduces Mortality in Vaccinated Infants and Children

Kalokerinos (1974) demonstrated repeatedly and quite conclusively that Aboriginal infants and children, a group with an unusually high death rate after vaccinations, were almost completely protected from this outcome by dosing them with vitamin C before and after vaccinations. The reason articulated for the high death rate was the exceptionally poor and near-scurvy-inducing (vitamin C-depleted) diet that was common in the Aboriginal culture. This also demonstrates that with the better nutrition in the United States and elsewhere in the world, the suggested doses of vitamin C should give an absolute protection against death (essentially a toxin-induced acute scurvy) and almost absolute protection against lesser toxic outcomes from any vaccinations administered. Certainly, there appears to be no logical reason not to give a nontoxic substance known to neutralize toxicity and stimulate antibody production, which is the whole point of vaccine administration.

Dosage Information for Pediatricians and Parents

Practically speaking, then, how should the pediatrician or parent proceed? For optimal antibody stimulation and toxin protection, it would be best to dose for three to five days before the shot(s) and to continue for at least two to three days following the shot. When dealing with infants and very young children, administering a 1,000 mg dose of liposome-encapsulated vitamin C would be both easiest and best, as the gel-like nature of this form of vitamin C allows a ready mixture into yogurt or any other palatable food, and the complete proximal absorption of the liposomes would avoid any possible loose stools or other possible undesirable bowel effects.

Vitamin C as sodium ascorbate powder will also work well. Infants under 10 pounds can take 500 mg daily in some fruit juice, while babies between 10 and 20 pounds could take anywhere from 500 mg to 1,000 mg total per day, in divided doses. Older children can take 1,000 mg daily per year of life (5,000 mg for a 5 year-old child, for example, in divided doses). If sodium must be avoided, calcium ascorbate is well-tolerated and, like sodium ascorbate, is non-acidic. Some but not all children’s chewable vitamins are made with calcium ascorbate. Be sure to read the label. Giving vitamin C in divided doses, all through the day, improves absorption and improves tolerance. As children get older, they can more easily handle the ascorbic acid form of vitamin C, especially if given with meals. For any child showing significant bowel sensitivity, either use liposome-encapsulated vitamin C, or the amount of regular vitamin C can just be appropriately decreased to an easily tolerated amount.

Very similar considerations exist for older individuals receiving any of a number of vaccinations for preventing infection, such as the yearly flu shots. When there is really no urgency, and there rarely is, such individuals should supplement with vitamin C for several weeks before and several weeks after, if at all possible

Even taking a one-time dose of vitamin C in the dosage range suggested above directly before the injections can still have a significant toxin-neutralizing and antibody-stimulating effect. It’s just that an even better likelihood of having a positive outcome results from extending the pre- and post-dosing periods of time.

(Thomas Levy, MD, JD is a board-certified cardiologist and admitted to the bar in Colorado and the District of Colombia. He is the author of several books on vitamin C as well as numerous articles. By way of disclaimer, he is a consultant to a company that sells a brand of liposome-encapsulated vitamin C.
I have more to say about my update but I’m short on time so I’ll post more thoughts later. Basically… I’m eating a high fat diet to keep calories up to prevent weight loss because I am burning too many calories. Most days it’s not a big deal but I do have some days where I just don’t want all the fat. I’d love some beans or something. But, I’ve kept with the raw. I’m second guessing my raw reboot during a time where I’m burning so many calories.

I’m more than 1/2-way through the journey. Today marks 49 days. I’m on such a roll but I need to listen to my body. I’m thinking the plan might be this… Keep going until I complete day 60. Then, I’ll start the second stage of my Raw Reboot which includes some cooked vegan foods, but limiting it to beans, lentils, tofu, oats, etc. I won’t include bread or pasta or refined foods like that.

Meanwhile, here’s my food journal…

PS. I LOOOOOOOOVE MY NORWALK JUICER!!!!!!!! I can’t wait to tell you all about her!!!!!!!

That’s something we can use year round here in sunny Arizona. I jumped at the chance.

Trouble was…. I couldn’t get her to wear it. She’s going through a no-hat stage right now, but that’s ok. I know she’ll grow out of the phase (fingers crossed) and the hat will still fit when she does (fingers still crossed).

In our attempt to get a pic of this adorable hat, I offer you this “action” shot. You’d never know that a nanosecond after we got the shot, she took it off because she sure looks like she’s loving it. I know I am!

We recently designed Organic Cotton Flap Happy Hats. We currently only have our Organic Hats available in a natural white color, in both the flap hat and floppy hat styles. Not only are these hats organic, but they are also local! Our products are all designed and made in Los Angeles, CA.

Today, I’m sharing three great books that I recommend for your library. One is a fun ebook about travel in the raw, one is a great primer on plant-based nutrition, and the third one is a super guide for pursuing a vegan pregnancy. So! Let’s get started!

Travelling in the Raw (ebook) – by Robyn Law

I have a lovely history with my dear friend, Robyn, of Girl on Raw. So, I’m eager to share with you my excitement of her Ebook on travel tips for raw foodies. It was obvious that she put her heart and soul into this ebook from the moment I started reading it. I’ve traveled and lived raw a few times, but Robyn takes the cake because she is a former flight attendant and has lots of travel miles on me. She’s a true expert.

In her book, which has raw recipes (one of mine!), I was especially fond of her tips for dressing salads, planning ahead, freezing juice, and more. Here are some deets from her website:

Are you distressed about sticking to your healthy habits whilst abroad? Do you think your healthy regime will slide, without the comfort of your routine, local grocer and home appliances?

Fret no more as you discover that travelling for work or pleasure does not mean your health goals should be compromised. You will learn:

How to still have fun whilst travelling and eat sensibly whether you are 100% raw, high raw or just want to improve your holiday diet. What equipment you should pack. Where to connect with other raw ‘foodies’ on your travels.

Researching resources for your trip abroad. Recipes for you to make both before your departure and on the road. And other helpful tips and tricks I have discovered over my 9 years of travel both for fun and work

By the time I finished her Ebook, I wanted to pack my travel bags and head out on a raw trip. Good job, Robyn, love you tons!

Vegan Pregnancy Survival Guide by Sayward Rebhal

I’ve read a couple books about being vegan while pregnant, but I was more than happy to review a copy of Vegan Pregnancy Survival Guide (aptly named), when it was offered. To be honest, it sat around for awhile because reading any book that’s not on my Kindle tends to collect dust. My reading time is limited to when Kamea sleeps, during which I’m usually with her in bed, and it’s dark. However, I’d put off reading it long enough and it’s a short book so I just grabbed it one afternoon while standing in the kitchen to start reading. Funny thing is… it was such a good little book that I didn’t want to put it down! So, I went to bed that night, determined to finish it. I read it with a little flashlight sticking out of my mouth. Thankfully, the book isn’t too long. ;)

I really recommend this book for you (or any pregnant mamas you know that are curious about being vegan with babe in the womb). It’s easy to read. Funny, too. I tabbed a few pages because they were good sources for quick lists of various foods (and herbs) to include in your veg pregnancy (heck, in life in general).

Chapters include… Planning the pregnancy (nutrition, troubleshooting, labor/delivery, and social stuff) and Postpartum (baby life, nutrition for breastfeeding).

PS Check out her great blog, too.

Note: I saw that the author included parsley as a galactagogue, but I knew from my own research that it’s not. Quite the opposite actually. A breastfeeding mom will generally want to limit or avoid parsley because it’s been known to dry up milk supply. When I emailed Sayward about it, she said…

You’re totally right! Ack! Parsley was on my anti-galactogogues list, which ended up getting cut (modified into a short paragraph). I’m not sure how it got moved and how that slipped by the many, many revisions and proofreadings, but it makes me sad. (That said, I drank, and still drink, parsley juice a few times a week and my supply has always been stellar!) I really do appreciate you pointing that out and we’ll definitely make the change for the next printing.

I like books that are fun and easy to read, but also good sources of solid information. Enter: The Idiot’s Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition. When I was sent this book to review, I looked forward to it because it’s the kind of book that is fun to dip in and out of and doesn’t necessarily require reading from cover to cover. As I mentioned before, reading anything that’s not on my Kindle can be a challenge (so I must admit I haven’t even read all of this yet, although keep in mind, it is available on Kindle).

However, I read enough to know that it’s a solid book, whether you’re a newbie vegan or a vegan vet. The book covers so much: Benefits of a plant-based diet (nutrition, macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, super nutrients, anti-nutrients, and food groups), Living a Plant-Based Life (calories, controversies, shopping, fitness, supplements), and Special Considerations (pregnancy, babies, kids, seniors, athletes, weight loss, disease), and Recipes. See? What’d I tell ya? It’s a thorough book.

Julieanna’s book is written with experience and this book makes a great gift, especially for someone who’s just starting out in the plant-based world.Similar Posts:

I’m all about doing as much as we can with respect to organic, eco-friendly clothing for my family. Although my closet is a work in progress (too much to overhaul all at once), Kamea only wears organic (or at the very least, clothing made from eco-friendly, non-toxic, and sustainable materials).

Soooo, I jumped at the chance to get my hands on a new outfit when the kind folks from Bamboosa offered a cute onesie for Kamea, made from organic bamboo. Here she is modeling it. :)

Here’s what they told me in the email they sent…

Printed with the new technology direct to garment digital printing, it is the most environmentally friendly printing that is available. The ink system is a water based system that is self-contained and produces no waste. Unlike traditional screen printing with plastisol inks, there are no screen emulsions, solvents, reclaim chemicals, etc.

Our soft and comfy cuddlesacs are made of 95% Viscose from Organic Bamboo and 5% Lycra baby rib … an ultra-soft fabric, that naturally thermal regulates. Our Bamboosa fabric is free of chlorine and formaldehyde and our fabric and products are USA made and sweatshop-free.

Cool, huh? THAT’S a company I can get behind and support. If you’re interested in these sweet and soft clothes for your wee little ones, check out the website here! Their stuff is soooo cute, I need to get my hands on more!Similar Posts:

Shimmer shimmer… shine shine…. happy days… I am feeling amazing. From head to toe, I feel electric. It’s like my cells, nerves, and every part of me is glowing inside, healing, vibrating with an energy I can barely describe, but it’s just oh so beautiful… My transformation to Total Ethereal Goddessness is working.

It’s a work in progress, but it’s happening. How am I doing it? Is it just the awesome, effortless, pure raw food I’m eating? No. It’s not so simple (yet, it actually does feel that simple, natural, if that makes any sense). Yes, I’m eating an amazing raw organic diet (What is it now? About 34 days into my 90-day plan?), but that’s not all. For those of you who have been following my journey, you know I’ve been doing enemas, yoga, meditation, dry skin brushing, creating new routines for my beauty regimen, etc. But, I still have more. I want to do better with conscious chewing, I want grow my own food, and meditation needs mastering. One thing at a time though.

Some things worth noting…

Logging Breaks – From time to time I’m breaking from logging everything I eat because, not only is it so time consuming with all the details I provide, but more importantly, it’s causing me to focus on food too much while I’m trying not to do that. As a person rising above gluttonous behaviors regarding food, it’d be nice not to think about it too much. I’m still doing the journals, but if you see a day skipped here or there, that’s why. Or, if you see a list, but it’s just a simple food list, I hope you can understand.

Norwalk Juicer – My latest excitement stems from the Norwalk Juicer purchase I made earlier this week. I am dancing a jig about every hour with joy.

I Need Raw Vegan Chocolate – I ran out of raw vegan chocolate this week and purposefully didn’t make anymore to see how I handled it. I enjoyed, immensely, pili non-chocolate chocolate, but I gotta be honest… it’s not quite the same. That being said, perhaps I need to tweak my recipe. Yes, I will perfect it. In the meantime, ME WANT RAW CACAO BITTER CHOCOLATE! The beautiful news is that I’m content to have 1-2 pieces at a time (i.e., about 2-3 bites). I keep it low glycemic by making it quite bitter and using raw coconut nectar. But, this girl looooooves her some chocolate and I plan on keeping it in my diet.

Sources for Extra Nutrition – I’ve committed to using more raw sunflower lecithin for the nutrients. I’ll add it to smoothies, spreads, chocolate, etc. I also want to use more miso to help season my foods. I have a bunch of jars from my favorite source, South River Miso (the best best best no other is better miso!), and I’m eager to use them in cheeses, dressings, spreads, etc.

Farmer’s Market Loyalty – This week I finally went to the farmer’s market where I found the greatest ORGANIC farmer who had a dizzying array of variety (groovy chinese lettuce stuff, meyer lemons, blood oranges, purple carrots, and the list goes on!) and he was fully stocked even though I didn’t arrive right at the crack of dawn. I was in hog heaven. The fantastic thing is he is at one place on Wednesday and another on Saturday. PERFECT! Now, I will rarely need to go to Whole Foods except for things like bananas and non-produce foods. For most things he’s cheaper than Whole Foods, of course, and it’s local, which means more Qi in my food (read about Qi-rich food here, but note that the farmer I detail in the post is not the same farmer I’m going to now). For those of you here in the valley, the farmer I buy from now is McClendon Farms. And, how cool that they’re set up where the cashiers use iPhones (or iPads) for checking out so you can use credit card? It’s an all around awesome experience.

Getting Skinny – I’m getting a bit too thin, so I need to add more calories. Look for heftier food posts next week.

Water with meyer lemon …. Tea

3 cups Chunky Green smoothie (water, romaine, celery, spinach, cabbage, apple, blood orange, almond butter) I’m keeping my smoothies on the chunky side lately, because it forces me to chew them a bit, which I think could be good for digestion, but also prevents me from over blending and therefore less oxidation. Thoughts? …. Supplements

BFF Kelp Noodles (I’ll list here once what this is made of and then you’ll know: kelp noodles – by the way, I found a cheaper source for these than Raw Food World and it’s AMAZON - like half the price!
Thank you for sharing in the excitement of my purchasing a Norwalk Juicer! After I bought it, I was envisioning how my juicing process will be. In the past, I used quart size glass mason jars, but I decided I wanted to move to pint size and drink a pint at a time, so that means my juices will get less exposure to oxygen if I store them in smaller quantities.

Off to Amazon I go… looking for pint size mason jars. While getting ready to make my purchase, I was reading in the comments and reviews and learned that the glass mason jars’ lids have BPA in them. Gasp! Now, when it comes to using mason jars for things like nuts and seeds I am not as concerned, although still disappointed. But, when I use the jars for green juice or nut milk, I fill the jar to the tippy-top with liquid. That would not be good because it’d touch the BPA lid. Ick!

However! I also read a review, where I was directed to the name of a company that makes lids that are BPA free. Whew! So I ordered some. You can buy regular size lids here and you can buy widemouth size lids here.

It is possible that maybe not all lids that come with canning jars have BPA in them. But my jars are many years old and surely contain bpa. Plus, I find that they tend to rust and I need to replace them anyway.

Here is a good article from Tree Hugger about this very topic.Similar Posts:

Holy shit! There goes my potty mouth again. I guess I’m starting to get more comfortable around you guys. I ordered a Norwalk Juicer. Do I even need to say anymore???? Ok, I will! I ordered it on Sunday night. :)

Greg and I have been talking about the awesomeness of the Norwalk Juicer (a.k.a. the ultimate in juicing, hands down, the highest quality, bestest – yes, I just wrote “bestest” juice, because it warrants that. Ever. On the planet.) I’m sure you can sense a bit of my excitement. Where was I? Oh yeah, Greg and I have been discussing the Norwalk for about three years. I’ve had it on my vision board since then. Recently, we decided to take the plunge and buy the sucker!

Why is it the best? Well, the short of it is this:

Cold-pressed juice for the ultimate juicing experience

Massively high nutrient content in your juice compared to other juicers (check out these laboratory stats)

Highest yield (The pulp comes out dull colored and dry like a wafer, so you’re getting every drip from your organic produce. Apparently, animals won’t even eat the pulp because all of the nutrition is gone.)

Don’t be discouraged by the price. No sticker shock. Truth is… it pays for itself. Yup. If you juice a lot, and we do, it can pay for itself in about a year. If you juice modestly, maybe three years. Juice just a bit? Ok, longer, but it has a 12 year warranty, so eventually it pays for itself! Here’s how they put it on their California site (great videos there of Norwalk Juicers in the news)

The Norwalk Juicer Produces 50-100% more juice than other juicers: Based on organic produce costing an average of $1.50 per pound people who drink 12 glasses of juice per day will save $3000 per year in organic produce using the Norwalk over another juicer! Anyone who drinks 4 glasses of juice per day will save $1000 per year in produce, for the rest of their lives!

According to their other website where I placed my order:

Complete extraction. The tremendous pressure exerted by the Norwalk Hydraulic Press gently and completely extracts the natural fruit sugars, vitamins, trace minerals, enzymes, and other vital elements. This imparts to the juice an extremely fine quality and flavor which is unequaled by any other method of juice extraction.

Frozen Juices. Norwalk juices may be deep frozen and held for periods of up to 6 months with very little loss in food values. Green juices may be made up in quantities in season and frozen in ice cube trays and stored in plastic bags in your deep freeze.

Storage of juices. The Hydraulic Press method of juice extraction provides a minimum mixing of air with the juices which results in very slow oxidation or decomposition. This is why Norwalk juices may be kept refrigerated in closed containers for several days with little, if any, apparent loss of flavor, color or, vital elements. With the Norwalk it is possible to keep the refrigerator stocked at all times with a variety of delicious and satisfying juices with only occasional use of the juicer required.

Simple and efficient. So simple, that a 25-pound sack of carrots may be juiced in 20 minutes, providing 7 to 8 quarts of juice. Many Norwalk owners juice only 1 or 2 times a week to keep their refrigerator stocked with a variety of fresh juices.

Let me just say this… I loaned my Hurom, my current juicer of choice, to my BFF and I’ve been using my Green Star (the pic over to the right is from this morning… that was for my breakfast juice). What a pain in the ass that thing is. Good heavens! Now, the Hurom is a very good juicer, but it has its share of cons. It produces a lot of foam and doesn’t strain enough so I always have to strain after juicing. Now that I know the potential of the Norwalk, the Hurom is going to start paling in comparison.

So, I’m beyond friggin’ stoked. My cells are doing a happy dance. I’m just trying to come up with a name for it now. Hmmm.

Of course… I will blog many deets once I try my new baby out. Count on it. There are many things to learn to make the Norwalk experience simple and fun. I’ve been studying diligently… scouring the forums, blog posts, reviews, etc. I’m only a Norwalk Padawan right now, but I will soon be a Norwalk Jedi.Similar Posts:

Let’s just be honest and to the point. This post involves talk of colons, poop, speculums going up the bum, and more. Therefore, you might want to pass. But, I know there are some very interested folks out there in hearing more about enemas and colonics. Today, I’m sharing my recent adventures in them.

Let’s see… I’ve been living a raw (or at least high-raw) life for a long while now … going on 7-8 years. Two things I’ve never been interested in though, which many raw foodies are, are enemas and colonics. I’m asked frequently and my answer is always the same. I go to the bathroom enough. I shouldn’t need those. In the back of my mind, I also knew they’re controversial – although I’d never done any in-depth research. Some people believe they’re essential no matter what, some say they’re important if you’re ill, and some say they’re harmful (typically allopathic docs, which I should know better than to just follow their advice blindly). But, since I didn’t think I had a need for them, I figured I was playing it safe by avoiding them. After all… I poop a lot.

Well, as you all know, I’m evolving. My life is transforming. I’m living life on a more vibrant plane. As a result I’m becoming open to more things: yoga, enemas, and colonics being three of them. So when I started re-reading Normal Walker’s books (oldies but goodies like this one and this one), listening to cool peeps like the Monarchs yapping about them on YouTube, this time around I kept my mind open. I considered what I was reading and learning… things like… just because you go to the bathroom multiple times a day does not mean that you don’t need your colon cleansed… just because you eat an uber healthy diet, does not mean you wouldn’t benefit still tremendously from spiffing up your colon… just because you think you know better, maybe you don’t and you should look more into it.

OK, I’ll bite – chomp chomp. I started reading about them more, both on the internet and in books like Inside Poop. Honestly, I won’t go into the details of what I’ve learned because it’s late at night and I’m trying to get this post done. I’ve been trying to write it for over a week. Suffice it to say, I decided that I actually WANTED to try enemas and colonics. I realized that they could be beneficial to someone even like me. I am of the mind now that my colon needs to be cleaned even when I go to the bathroom a lot, even when I eat a clean diet, even when I’m not ill… and especially if you don’t go to the bathroom a lot, especially if you don’t eat a super clean diet, and especially if you’re ill (be it headache, acne, stress, cancer, etc). Of course, I’m not a doc, you all know that. I’m not giving medical advice. I’m just sayin’ that enemas and colonics have a place in my life and they might in yours. Do the research and see.

One thing I found fascinating though… enemas have been around for YEARS! Like, many many many years. History, baby! When you do some checking, you’ll see that this is nothing new and people have been using them to get healthy for a very. long. time.

Breastfeeding or pregnant? When I decided I was ready to take the plunge, I wanted to know if it was ok for me to do an enema and/or colonic while breastfeeding. Here’s what I found. Enemas are fine and should be for most people. However, they can cause detox so consider that. I, personally, am not afraid of that because of my clean diet. But, if you’re breastfeeding and have a crappy diet (I don’t even want to go there!) and you suddenly start doing enemas then it might not be a good idea? I don’t know. Ask your naturopath and do your research. Same goes for pregnancy. However, I know people do enemas while pregnant. Again, do your own research.

As far as colonics go, I did come across a local site that won’t do colonics for breastfeeding women, while many other sites were fine with breastfeeding moms. Pregnancy is a bit different though when it comes to colonics. Apparently, they’re to be avoided during the first and third trimesters.

Oh, let me back up… what’s the difference between enemas and colonics? Well, I’m a newbie writing here, but enemas are done at home and you typically use either a small (1.5 quart bag generally) or a large (4 quart bag) for the water. You, or a loved one I suppose, will administer it. For colonics, you venture out to a medical clinic (or even some spas have them nowadays… bizarre? maybe not… maybe just a sign of the times) and there is a colon hydrotherapist who administers it. The reason to go for a colonic is because much more water is used, going farther into the darkness of your colon, and getting more clean.

OK! So! I’ll bet you want more personal details! Bear in mind, I’m not a professional enema-er… I’ve only just started these so who knows if I’m doing them exactly right. So far so good though! I’ve no complaints. :)

When I decided I wanted to do them, I had no idea where to begin. So, I found a couple of websites that gave some details, I bought a 1.5 quart bag, and I went to town! After I cleaned the bag when it arrived, I grabbed my iPhone (might as well have tunes or texting, right?), walked into the bathroom, put some towels on the floor, rolled up a towel for under my head, undressed, filled the bag with warm filtered water, hung the bag on the towel rack, let out some water to make sure there’s no air in the tube, clamped the hose shut, sat on the floor, put some Andrea’s oil on my bum and on the speculum part that goes into my bum, laid on my back, knees raised (sometimes I even put my feet on the wall), inserted the speculum thing (no big deal at all, like the size of an eraser on top of a pencil if that), unlatched the hose lock, and the water flowed.

I learned from reading that if it feels like pressure, try to massage your belly a bit or roll to the left or right. See if it passes and you can keep going. You can massage counter clockwise while filling your body. If you feel you can’t keep going (common in the beginning of a session if you need to release some poops), then clamp the hose, stand up, walk to toilet with hose still in you (good idea to do all this by the toilet so the enema bag can stay hanging and you can move to toilet with hose still up your bum otherwise you risk pooh-ing on the floor). Pull it out and release the water (and poop) into the toilet. Don’t stay on the toilet if you’re straining. If you haven’t completed the session, then start over and put more water back in. Make sense?

If you have emptied the bag (therefore you’re done with the filling phase), then some people let the water stay in them a bit. I haven’t done that. I fill up and release. The release can take awhile. So, it might mean sitting on the toilet for a bit, massaging your belly clockwise this time to help push the water to release. Then, I get up, lay on the floor, roll around, stretch, etc. This moves more water around and prompts me to get up and release more.

That’s how I do enemas.

I knew immediately that I needed a bigger bag so I upgraded to the 4 quart. When it arrived I was shocked to find the speculum thing was bigger! Yikes. Fortunately, I just took the hose off the small bag with the smaller speculum and attached it to the bigger bag. Whew! It’s working like a charm. In hindsight, I’m glad I have both bags for the aforementioned speculum issue but also, I think the smaller bag is ideal for travel. Yes, along with packing my high speed blender when I travel, I’ll now be packing my enema bag.

What are the results? Well, with my new clean, effortless diet I’m on til April, enemas on a weekly (or twice weekly) basis has been AWESOME! The immediate improvements I’ve noticed… clearer skin, dry lips gone, I feel amazing, and more. One day I had a headache and doing an enema helped. Some days I feel less hungry. And, I had heard that they help with cravings. I’d have to agree in a way. I find that when I do them, I feel more in control of my life and food choices, and this naturally helps me make better choices.

I’m also proud of myself. This was something I never thought I’d do. I became open to it. I researched it. I did it. And, as a result, I feel like I stretched my self. It was a challenge and I tackled it.

How is it after doing it a few weeks? Well, I have my enema groove on. I created a playlist on my iPhone (I routinely shuffle through a few tunes from The Celtic Lounge album). I have a special towel and yoga mat that I use to lie on. I have a special pillow for my head. Sometimes (often!) I light candles. It’s a ritual, a time for meditating, and I truly look forward to it. I’d say the whole thing is maybe 20-30 minutes? I feel spectacular afterwards.

One last note about enemas… Staying hydrated is important. I noticed a couple times feeling thirstier (even on my raw diet!), so I drink more water. Oh! And take more probiotics.

So, what about colonics? Well, after doing enemas a few times, I decided it was time for the big dog. Bring on the colonic. I researched various medical centers (I didn’t feel right going to a spa for it. I preferred going to a doctor’s office where they had naturopathic docs on staff). I read their websites, called them to ask questions and finally decided on a local place called Aletris. (Highly recommend them!)

Turns out the gal doing the colon hydrotherapy is vegan and even knowledgeable about raw foods. She answered all of my anxious questions before beginning. I’ll say this right now. It was awkward for me. Having someone put something up my bum and hold it there for about 45 minutes just isn’t a walk in the park.

I think the biggest surprise, however, was the size of the disposable speculum! Holy moly! Bigger than even the one that came with my 4 quart enema bag. When she pulled it out of the package, I was like… whoa what’s that? Rest assured, it actually didn’t hurt, but it was weird. Let’s be honest, it makes you feel like you want to push it out.

Anyway, despite that, it ended up being fairly relaxing because of her. She had soothing opera music on. I had to keep reming myself to just let gooooo. After awhile it was easier to chill, and I’m confident that for the next colonic it’ll be that much better because it won’t be my first rodeo. The colon hydrotherapist said I was impressive, that my “waste” was as it should be (after all, you get to watch the waste leaving you as it goes through the machine – at one point I think I saw a goji berry – ewww gross – just a friendly reminder that I need to chew better – tee hee). After it was over, I was starving but I hadn’t eaten much earlier in the day so I’ll remember to eat more breakfast next time. They recommend that.

I will do more colonics in the future but probably not for awhile. The colon hydrotherapist actually said that I had a nice colon and she didn’t need to see me but maybe 1-2 times a year, if that (yay raw vegan food!). She said if I feel I need it, then ok, but she saw no immediate need for more sessions. Groovy. I’ll stick with my enemas for now.

So, what about you? Do you have other questions? Do you like enemas or colonics? Care to share your stories, tips, and tricks?

Has it really been that long already?

Soooo…. How do I feel? Mmmmmm…. F*cking GREAT!!!!! Sorry for the language, friends, but tis true… I have a potty mouth. I say my potty words with nothing but loooooove though. :)

What have I noticed over the past days with this blissful and nourishing food I’m eating? This sublime life I’m living? Well, a few things!

Going out – I had a couple of moments where I wondered when I was going to get a break making food. Thankfully, the food style I’ve chosen is effortless for the most part, so doing this every day for every meal makes it that much easier. That being said, there are times that I’d love to wiggle my nose, cross my arms, and poof(!) have a raw meal in front of me. So what did I do? I went out to eat this week. We went to Chakra 4 Herbs (a lovely breastfeeding friendly place) where I met up with Karen Knowler last year… anyway, I digress (I’m feeling a bit chatty today)… I went there for some lovely raw foods. We ate lunch, I bought some extras to-go, and life was good. I’m going back Friday for more. Their food is heavenly. And, now that I’m officially calling myself a tea drinker (that’s a whole other post!!!), with Chakra 4 Herbs being a big tea house, it’s the best of everything.

What would I do, however, if I didn’t have a couple of raw places within a 30 minute drive? Well, I’d order raw foods online so that I could take a bit of time off from the kitchen (we all need a break once in a while, right?). My favorites so far are Pure Market Express and RAWvolution. UPDATE (1/25/12) – Although I’m listing Pure Market Express here as a source, I want to note a couple of things. In the past I’ve evaluated their food and loved many things and I’ve had a couple of things that I’m not crazy about. Also, I’ve heard of complaints about their policies, rancid nuts, etc. I only think it’s fair that I let you know.

Reviewing Intentions – The other thing I did routinely this week was to read over my previous blog posts about my 90-Day Clean Raw Food Mission as well as revisiting my 2012 goals, intentions, and notes about becoming a Total Ethereal Goddess. I keep these notes on my iPhone in the “notes” application where I can quickly access them all the time! Believe me – what a HUGE difference it makes to look at these multiple times a day. It stokes the fire.

Cut the cord - This was the official week where we cut the cord from the cable company and it’s been fantastic. I don’t miss it at all. We did get Apple TV so we can stream movies and documentaries and that’s been fun. So far we watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead and I Don’t Know How She Does It. We thoroughly enjoyed Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead… so much that I juiced the next day. I recommend it if you haven’t already seen it.

No, friends, I’m not referring to the typical vanilla extract you buy in the store that wreaks of alcohol. No! I’m talking about these amazing extracts that smell so sublime I want to wear them.
