I realize that calling someone an ironic hipster is both superfluous and unnecessary, but good lord. I couldn’t think of any other way to nicely and succinctly say, “You’re a clueless idiot.” And to be honest, what I’m about to share with you is a terrible insult to hipsters, who I don’t really have a problem with. As long as they wear pants that fit properly.

So, what’s the problem exactly?

This logo for the Women’s Independent Film Festival:

I mean, this has to be a joke, right?

Seriously, I get that they’re going for a whole women-giving-birth-to-film thing, but holy christ-on-a-stick! Could they have found a more offensive logo to represent a women’s film festival? I really hate to pick on a group that probably means well, but I just can’t help myself here.

Being pregnant or giving birth isn’t synonymous with being a woman. Do I need to say that again? Okay, I won’t, but an organization like this REALLY should know better. It certainly has nothing to do with film production, unless your film just happens to be about birth and babies. Worse, it goes to support the pervasive attitude that women everywhere are baby-crazy airheads who are only doing this whole “film thing” as a hobby while their husbands bring home the actual bacon.

Look, I know it’s a logo. And I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with deciding to have children. What I am saying is, it’s irrelevant. And just like I want religion to stay far, far away from my political leaders… how about the professional groups “celebrating” women focus on their actual achievements, instead of their biological inner-workings. Unless, of course, you’d rather start seeing some rather gross movie posters celebrating the virility of men through the ages.

No? Your loss…

Why yes, I do have a list of all the people I’m going to get even with the day I become a billionaire. But until that inevitable day comes, I’m talking about music scores. (I know, I’m totally witty.)

Recently, I’ve decided to start digging up some of my old music scores, buried deep within a large box in the back of my closet. And, in an effort to both kill the memories I have of myself as some young genius composer, and to preserve the evidence of my over-inflated ego, I’ve begun updating the print scores for the few that deserve rescuing.

Case in point: Interfusion – for soprano voice, oboe, clarinet, cello, and bassoon

It’s definitely my most ‘complicated’ score (read: never performed), and the voice uses phonetics instead of actual words. But through the magic of modern-day computers, I was able to take my old score with handwritten phonetic alphabet symbols illegibly scrawled under the vocal line, and ‘pretty it up’ so it’s more or less legible.

Performable? That’s a whole ‘nother question.

But, if you’ve got a voice, oboe, clarinet, cello, and bassoon quintet just dying for some new music… boy do I have the piece for you!

For those with heat-resistant genetics, and the ability to both cut past traffic in a BMW convertible and simultaneously employ their preferred middle finger… Los Angeles can be a truly magical place.

Myself? I chose to stay indoors and cope by embracing the colorless void of my Viking-blood heritage. Or rather, in a much less dramatic fashion, I created a couple new mixed-media pieces. Which have nothing to do with summer. Or Scandinavians in the wintertime.
