Do I Need a Headshot or a Branding Session?

You already know visuals matter. People want to see the person behind the work. The real question is which type of session actually fits where you are right now. You just need clarity so you can show up confidently and make smart choices for your brand.

Below is a simple breakdown to help you decide without overthinking it.

What is a Headshot Session?

Quick overview

A headshot session is streamlined, intentional, and ideal when you need a clean, professional image that looks like you actually look right now. I still want them to align with your brand, so I usually ask clients to send me some photos they feel represent their ideal brand before we meet. These sessions typically take place in the studio, but we can travel for a fee. We shoot for about thirty minutes, keeping everything simple and focused on capturing a strong, confident image. After we’re done, we sit down together and choose your photos right then so you leave your appointment knowing exactly what you’re getting.

Headshot sessions are ideal if:

You only need a few great images to update your online presence or marketing materials. If you’re still figuring out how you want to market yourself or aren’t ready for a full visual strategy, a headshot session gives you what you need right now without overcommitting.

What is a Branding Session?

Quick overview

A branding session is a very different experience. Before we ever take a photo, we spend about an hour planning. We talk about your brand, the message you want to send, how you want people to feel when they interact with your business, and where your photos will be used. The session itself usually runs about 1-2 hours and can include multiple locations so we can show you in your environment and create a variety of images that tell a complete story. You walk away with a much larger set of photos designed to support your marketing, social media, website, and any campaigns you have coming up.

Branding sessions are ideal if:

Branding photos go beyond “here’s my face” and move into “here’s the experience of working with me.” They help you stand out, look consistent across platforms, and make a stronger visual impression on your ideal clients. They’re also a great match when you know who your audience is and how you want to show up for them.

How Do I Know Which One I Actually Need?

The simplest way to decide is to look at where you are in your business right now. If you need a few polished images that represent you well and give your online presence a quick upgrade, a headshot session is usually the best fit. It’s efficient, it’s straightforward, and it gives you what you need without investing in a full brand story before you’re ready.

If you’ve already clarified your message, understand your audience, and know you need more to support your marketing, a branding session will give you the depth and variety you’re looking for. It’s the better choice when you’re building something more visible and want images that feel intentional instead of improvisational.

Still Not Sure Which Session Fits You Best?

If you’re undecided after reading this, that’s completely normal. A quick conversation about where you are in your business and what you’re working toward usually makes the answer clear. If you want help choosing the session that actually fits your goals, let’s hop on a call and talk it through.

You already know that having great branding photos is essential, but if no one can find your business online, it doesn’t matter how good you look. That’s why I’m sharing four quick SEO strategies I use (and recommend to my clients) to get found online.

Because pretty photos + smart strategy = growth.

Let’s examine some local SEO moves that will help your brand be seen by the right people at the right time.

1. Get your Google Business Profile and Bing Places listing in order

Everyone talks about Google My Business (now called Google Business Profile), but not enough people are also setting up Bing Places. And here’s why you should: Microsoft invested heavily in ChatGPT and uses Bing search to fuel it, so if someone’s using AI tools to look for a business like yours, you want to be listed.

Here are my links so you can see what this looks like in action:
Kristina Rose Google Business Profile
Kristina Rose Bing Places listing

Claim your business. Keep it updated. Post regularly. It makes a difference.

2. Use strategic keywords (and pay attention to your blog titles)

Think about what someone types into Google when they need your services. For me, a big one is “branding photography Blacksburg, VA”. And those happen to be the keywords for this blog post. But if you look at this one, Branding Photographer, Christiansburg, VA – I used another local town in that blog post to cover more of my bases.

Your blog titles matter. So do the words you sprinkle throughout your site—including alt text on images, headers, and even your FAQs. If you want to get found, make sure you’re actually speaking your audience’s language.

3. Get high-quality backlinks

Search engines love it when trusted websites link back to yours. That’s called a “backlink,” and it builds your online credibility. But not just any site will do; you want links from brands that align with your offers.

For me, branding photography in Blacksburg, VA, often means working with realtors and small business owners who want to stand out in a competitive market. Since people moving to the area are likely searching for things to do, being featured in this Redfin article was a perfect fit. Honestly, I was thrilled it mentioned the Lyric Theatre. I’ve used it as a backdrop for several sessions, and it’s one of my favorite spots in town for photos with characters. Here’s an example:

Check out this Redfin article I was featured in:
Whether you’re a nature lover looking for a home with mountain views, history buff interested in historic houses for rent, or a foodie who needs an apartment near the hotspots, you’ll find something special in this vibrant community here:

4. Optimize your images

If you’re in a visual industry like mine, this step isn’t optional—it’s essential. Before you upload any photos to your site, rename the files using clear, descriptive keywords. For example, instead of dumping “IMG_3827.jpg” into your gallery, go with something like “branding-photography-in-blacksburg-va-kristina-rose.jpg.”

Add meaningful alt text that accurately describes the image and includes a keyword when it fits naturally. This helps screen readers and search engines understand what your content is about.

These small steps might seem tedious, but they quietly tell Google, “Hey, I know what I’m doing over here.” And trust me, that matters.

Want help making sure your visual brand works for your business?

That’s what I do. Let’s talk about creating intentional, strategic branding photos that make you look great and help people find you. Contact me!

Make Friends with the Camera (Not Frenemies)

Ever taken a selfie and thought, “Wow, I didn’t know my forehead was auditioning for a leading role”? Or maybe you’ve seen a photo where your arms look suspiciously Hulk-like while your head is… oddly tiny? That’s not you—it’s just the camera playing tricks.

Good news: Once you understand how this works, you can always position yourself for a flattering shot—no filters required.

The Golden Rule of Photos: Whatever’s Closest to the Camera Looks Biggest

Cameras (especially phone cameras) have this little habit of exaggerating anything that gets too close to them. That’s why selfies taken from a low angle can give you a surprise double chin and why sticking your hand toward the camera makes it look five times its actual size.

And don’t even get me started on wide-angle lenses—they’re great for landscapes but not for faces unless you want to look like you’re starring in a funhouse mirror exhibit.

How to Use This to Your Advantage

Now that you know how perspective works, here’s how to make it work for you instead of against you:

Back it up: Instead of holding your phone super close, extend your arm or, even better, use a tripod or have a friend take the shot from farther away.

Zoom in, don’t move in: If you’re using a phone, stand back and zoom in a little. This mimics the effect of a professional long lens, keeping proportions natural.

Mind your angles: Instead of leading with your forehead or chin, keep your weight balanced and shift your body slightly to the side for a more flattering shape.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words (Or a Few ‘OMG That’s So Much Better’ Moments)

Here’s an example of how simply adjusting your distance, angle, and pose can make a world of difference:

My client needed the same type of images as her old headshots, but we gave them a major update. the biggest difference not using a wide-angle lens (could just zoom with a cell phone) and tilting closer to the camera.

On the left, we have a wider-angle shot taken up close, which distorts features slightly. On the right, we have the same person, but taken with a longer lens (or zoomed in from a distance). See how much more natural the second one looks? But it probably doesn’t “feel” natural. The camera plays tricks on us.

If you own a business, publish an article, achieve a personal or professional milestone, or are the head-honcho of a volunteer organization, YOU are literally the face of that work. A professional headshot is often the first introduction someone has to you. Whether this is a target market you are trying to reach, or an idea you are trying to get across, this first impression is crucial. Your clients, customers, volunteers, etc. want to get to know you. A professional headshot is the perfect way to begin to share your personality with the world.

Q) What, exactly, are Professional Headshots used for?

A) Headshots are used for a number of different things. You’ll likely see them everywhere if you begin to look for headshots! They are used on company websites, LinkedIn Profiles, business cards, resumés, book jackets, and actor profiles.

Q) Do I have to dress up for my Headshot?

A) This depends…what is it you do and what is the message you are trying to send? If you are the president of a corporation, chances are standard business attire should be your choice. If you’re an athletic trainer, your workout gear might be more appropriate. There are some rules to follow, such as avoiding bright or bold patterns and iron your clothes, but the main focus is to dress in a way that portrays your personality and your message.

Q) Can I use a selfie as my headshot?

A) The short answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT. Selfies are fun, they tend to be spontaneous, and some of them even make you look pretty good. But rarely, if ever, do they match the quality of a professional headshot. If you are serious about what you are selling, or who you want to portray, a selfie is not the way to go.

Q) Can I have my headshots taken outside?

A)The answer depends on what look you or your company are trying to achieve and what will speak to your ideal clientele. We will discuss your backdrop while planning your session. Outdoor photos do tend to have a more natural and laid back feel. I’ll ask you what words you want to embody in your business as well as your headshots. Lighting will still be the most important thing. And if needed, I take my studio lights outside so we can make sure that your face is well lit.

Q) Can I just hire any photographer?

A) Hiring a photographer who is knowledgeable and skilled specifically at creating professional headshots is the best way to go. Because of all the reasons we’ve already talked about, why would you hire someone who isn’t familiar with headshot photography? It would be like hiring an ophthalmologist to do your dental work. When you schedule your professional headshot, we’ll talk about your goals for your job or business, what’s appropriate for the type of business you’re in, what you want to get across about your personality and what it’s like to work with you.

Q) How much should Professional Headshots cost?

A) There’s no question that professional photography costs more than having your friend take a quick pic for you. But think of it this way, growing your business and your personal brand is all about investing in the future. If your computer dies, yes, you look for the best value, but you don’t bat an eye at purchasing a new computer, because it’s an investment for your business. Likewise, if you want to be seen as a professional in your field, the expense of your headshots is just one more investment into your future.

Q) Are Professional Headshots worth it?

A) To sum it up, Professional Headshots are, well, Professional. If you are interviewing for a new job, reaching out to new clients, and/or trying to create a personal brand, you want to be taken seriously.

Consider these scenarios; You’re receiving an award from your local Chamber of Commerce, or, maybe your company is naming you employee of the month, and you don’t even know it. And, especially, if you own a small business, you’re well aware there is little separation between yourself and that business. YOU are the FACE of that business. Do you want the face people see to be that snap your friend took at the bar and posted on Facebook? Or the silly selfie you took with your cat? I’m guessing the answer is no. So do yourself a favor and invest in some classy, professional portraits. You won’t be disappointed!

This is senior photography now!

Yup, that’s right. Not so long ago, the only choice we had were the pictures taken by whoever the school hired to photograph all the seniors for the yearbook. There was no true reflection of our personality as an individual, just similar pictures of every senior, posed next to some giant numbers and wearing clothes we would never normally wear to school.

Today, we have so many more options and I love being able to offer a fun experience that will provide you with senior portraits that have that up-to-date trendy edge, but also maintain a classic feel.

1) Your senior photography should tell your senior story!

Your photos should reflect your personality and what your high school story was all about. Did you play sports? Let’s go to the field or the court as part of your session. Were you in theater? We can hit the stage for your senior portraits! Where is one of your favorite places to hang out with your friends? Let’s shoot there!

2) You can treat yourself like a model in your senior photography session.

Take this opportunity to get your hair and makeup done. If you know someone that you’d like to work with, great! If you don’t we can connect you with a hair/makeup person. Let’s face it, teenage skin isn’t always our friend…but a professional can help cover the blemishes and make you feel confident in your look. Guys…I’m talking to you too!

3) With my senior photography sessions, both the senior and the parents get what they want.

I strive to create classic images that also have a modern feel. I know moms want to see that smile they’ll never forget. And we offer prints in numerous sizes as well as albums and other products that will last a lifetime. Seniors receive digital images with their session which are ready for Instagram and other social media, so post away!

When it comes to your senior photography, the bottom line is FUN! Your shoot will be a special experience, unique to you and the final result will be timeless images that reflect who you are at this important time in your life. Visit Kristina Rose Photography today!

We are in the thick of the holiday season right now. I’m doing my best to enjoy it, but if you’re like me, you’ve got a long list of things that you wish you would’ve done or had time to do.

Oh boy, do I get that!

If you’re here reading this, you know me and I’m sure we’re connected in some way. I want to help you Rock Your New Year.

Take notes NOW for next year.

I shared a post about this notebook earlier and I still love it. I got the Rocket Book as a gift and last year I took notes about the holiday season for me to remember this year like:

You need a new Christmas tablecloth.

You saved all the addresses for cards “here” (I forget every year where my updated is list)

Buy new Santa hats. The kids outgrew the ones we have.

I wrote a list of all the food or treats I made and it was so helpful as I created my grocery list this year.

Things start to run together for me, so having these notes have been helpful. They are saved on my google drive, so I don’t have to search for them or worry about losing them. So I recommended taking notes about this year and keeping them in a location you can remember.

Taking Better Photos at the Holidays…and the rest of the year!

Most of us carry an amazing camera in our pocket.

Yep, I said it.

It’s your phone camera. I don’t believe that you have to carry around a huge, fancy, camera to take good photos.

You just need basic knowledge of photography and maybe some editing skills.

I’m bringing back my In-Person Photography Course. And it’s on sale now! Claim Your Spot!

Good photography skills can help you get Instagram-worthy photos or even help you more effectively promote your business.

Get updated Family photos and have your cards ready to go!

You may not be the type of person who sends holiday cards, but nonetheless, it’s fun to get “real” mail. But it’s so hard to add cards to the long list of to-dos.

Let me help you! If you book your family photos this year before July 31st, I’ll include a set of 25 Holiday cards. They’ll be completed and in your hands before the hustle and bustle begin.

Not to mention, your session will be done and we won’t have to take the chance of freezing in the fall/winter weather.

Book your Spring or Summer session now to receive this gift of 25 cards for FREE! Book Now!

Say “No!” to that bad Headshot!

Don’t wait until someone asks for your updated headshot when you get recognized at work.

Do NOT send in a selfie with your resume. YIKES! Or have an outdated LinkedIn photo.

You’re ready for photos that will take your business to the next level and you’ve realized that you can’t keep taking the same mediocre cell phone photo to cut it. You need a photographer.

How do you find the right personal branding photographer? I mean, geez, everyone and their sister is a photographer now, but trying to find a photographer who understands the needs of a growing entrepreneur and how the right marketing strategy can help you earn more money is like looking for a needle (no, let’s say diamond) in a haystack.

Let me make it easier for you by sharing 3 of the common mistakes entrepreneurs make when hiring a personal branding photographer. If you are intrigued by these. I have 3 more important ones you don’t want to miss, so drop me a line in the boxes at the end.

1 – Hiring a traditional photographer, but not one that specializes in personal branding.

Did you even know there were photographers who knew enough to help you grow your business?

You’ve seen all the generic shots that we all need to be sprinkled throughout our content, but if that’s all you get with a traditional photographer, then you won’t get strategic images that connect with YOUR ideal clients and will engage your ideal client.

You need more than a beautiful headshot if you plan to make an impact. Picking a photographer that doesn’t go into detail with you about your marketing strategy and help you brainstorm ideas to reach clients and upgrade your brand is not a good return on your investment.

Pro Tip – Look for variety in their portfolio and on social media Ask to see a single client’s images – you want to see some variety in there that seems to be unique to that person and not reflect the traditional stock photography.

2 – Not asking for commercial use license.

Most traditional photographers won’t officially allow you to use the images from your session to make money. To safely do that, you need to sign a commercial agreement.

Since you’re going to use the images to grow your business and make money, you should expect to pay more for these images than you would a personal photo session.

Quite frankly, commercial licensing can get fairly complicated. Traditionally, they are based on distribution numbers, length of time in use, the location they’ll be used, and so on.

Most professional personal branding photographers include the necessary license with no usage tracking or complicated pricing.

Pro Tip – Before hiring a photographer, ask about their usage license and contract prior to making your decision. If they don’t have a commercial license, it might get a little awkward if they see you making a lot of money off their images.

Think about it, if the photographer doesn’t have the tools to handle commercial work, how can they be expected to understand YOUR needs as an entrepreneur?

3 – Hiring a photographer who requires you to give them credit on the images every time you post or print.

If you hire a traditional photographer and they agree that it’s fine if you use their images to grow your business as long as you give them credit – RUN!!!

You need to be mindful of your conversion rate in social media ads as tagging outside business could hurt your conversion. And that’s just one of the issues you might run into.

Now, do I appreciate being credited on posts? Of course! But I don’t require it. I want to give you such a great experience that you want to recommend me anytime you hear someone asking about a personal branding photographer.

As photographers, we do depend on using the images we take to show examples of our work to potential clients. But maybe you have a large following, you’ll want to work with a photographer that understands the brand you’re growing and they won’t take advantage of that. Just make sure to have a discussion with them about requiring credit from your business.

There are even more very important issues to consider! Want to learn more?

This is just the tip of the iceberg of what it means to hire a photographer who understands the marketing needs of your business and what you need to make help it grow.

I have three more mistakes and perks that I’d love to share with you. If you’d like to know, drop your info below and I’ll send the details right over.

I’ve been there! I hired a traditional photographer that claimed personal branding. I got some cute photos, but they weren’t what I need for my business. And sometimes even the professionals like a little help and guidance.

I want to make sure you don’t get stuck in a bad situation. (If you’d like to see more of the photos from this session in use, visit Boldly Pursue.

Over the past few years of growing my business, marketing has actually become fun for me. Many of us love doing our service for clients or creating our products for our customers but don’t necessarily love or understand the marketing part.

How do we stand out in a crowded online space and connect with potential clients? The answer is with story marketing.

In my sessions with small businesses, I work to give them photos that put their best face forward and hopefully help them grow their business…IF THEY ARE USED CORRECTLY.

It is actually possible that your images could be costing you business, but if have bad images AND terrible (or even ordinary) copy, you could be losing even more customers.

In this digital age, many small businesses struggle to find the time or creativity (even mental bandwidth) to produce marketing material. I want to help you make a plan using a story marketing approach. It can take your understanding of how to reach your ideal clients to a whole new level.

I have created a workshop to help set your story marketing foundation.

Who is it for?

Small Business and entrepreneurs.

What will we do?

I will help you understand story-based marketing and how you can implement that in your business. This method works great for all businesses! We will also cover a few short photo tutorials with our smartphone.

What are the goals?

You will leave the workshop with a Brand Draft for your unique business.

We will also craft a series of social media posts and ideas for your business.

How long will it last?

With instruction and brainstorming, plan for two hours.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the workshop will be $99 and you will receive a $75 voucher to use toward a photo session (headshots start at $99) or a photo course.

The human brain processes an image about 60,000 times faster than text. People do not spend a lot of time reading. They look for images that tell them a story about your business.

If you’re not using the right images that tell your brand’s story or what it’s like to work with you, you may actually be turning customers away.

Here are three ways to tell you to need a Business Photoshoot:

1 – You are using outdated photos.

Remember my post about photography trends? Trends change and so do your looks.

So if you are using a photo that is 3-4 years old as your headshot, I can almost guarantee that if you haven’t changed your looks then the photography trend has changed.

So at the very least, you need to update your headshot. Your potential customers need to know who they are meeting. Your headshot should look like you on your best normal day. I recently helped Davis, Davis & Davis Attorneys in Radford, VA do this and it made a HUGE improvement on their website.

2 – You are using stock images

People can see authenticity. Stock images do not connect well. Yes, we can definitely photograph your own stock imagery that matches your brand to use on your website and on social media, but even those won’t be the photos of people draw the viewer in. It’s important to have inviting photos of YOU.

3 – Your images don’t make an emotional impact

When someone smiles at you, it’s almost instinctual to smile back. We tend to mimic the emotions of the people we interact with. This applies to photos as well.

That happy smiling photo of you or a pleased customer will have that website viewer smiling too.

Images are powerful. But they are often an overlooked part of running a business.

People use photos to make decisions. As a new mom in a new area, I chose my child’s pediatrician based on his headshot his description. He had a kind smile and he said he liked to garden, so I thought that meant he’d be gentle and patient with my child. I was right.

So do your business images say that you care about your potential customers and take pride in your business? Are you using too many stock images or out-of-date photos to advertise your business?

If the answer was yes or you even questioned, it’s time for a business photoshoot!

Contact me today and let’s schedule your free consult.
