Today, I'm happy to share one of my favorite blogs lately - Kittenhood. Daria and I met online by interning for Shabby Apple She is a complete sweetheart with an adorable blog. I love her pretty, feminine style and her gorgeous photography. AND she lives in Romania, which makes her really, really cool, right?

What are five words to describe your personality?

I'd say I'm funny, organized, accepting of others and a combination of workaholic and procrastinator.

Tell us a bit about where you're from, and how it influences your style.

I've grown up in a small town, where the torn jeans and safety pins I was wearing at the time were outrageous. I've moved to a larger city for college and have lived here since - it's a pleasure and a relief to be able to wear such things as an oversized bow or exaggerated platforms, without getting too many concerned looks.

What got you interested in style blogging?

Last year, I took part in Thing-a-Day, a project where people make something every day through February and post it on a blog. My idea was to create an accessory (a brooch, a necklace etc.) and style it in an outfit afterwards. I did that for 28 days, people liked it, and I liked it, too. Of course, I was already reading and loving several personal style blogs.

What do you do when you’re not blogging?

I'm a freelance writer, and lately I've worked almost exclusively with fashion brands. I also do some social media tasks for them - like for Shabby Apple, which you already know, or a Romanian online magazine dedicated to crafting. Why crafting - because I have a line of handmade accessories as well. When I'm not working, I'm a stay at home mom for my cat, Lizzi.

How did you name your blog?

I started my accessories line first and then named the blog after it, the two were connected. As you can imagine, I do love cats, and this word "kittenhood" describes the time when a cat is a kitten, and is most adorable. Some people read it as Kitten Hood, so I guess that works, too.

Who are your favorite bloggers right now?

I can't get over how cool Miss Moss is! As for some more recent discoveries, I like Scathingly Brilliant and Katie's Pencil Box.

How would you describe your style?

Girly, maybe a bit too childish for my age. The thing is I can't stay away from anything cute.

What are your favorite items in your closet?

You know how it is, the latest purchase is always the favorite! But I'm really grateful for my dresses. I especially like those with a sentimental value attached, like a lace dress made by my grandmother for my mother, a dress that was the first gift my boyfriend ever gave me, a dress that I wore to my sister's wedding or a dress I bought in Portugal.

What are some trends you love right now? What are some you hate?

I'm crazy about collars of all sorts - buttoned up shirts, Peter-Pan collars, necklaces that imitate collars. And I love prints with animals - especially cats.

One thing I can't see myself wearing are those see-through maxi skirts. But you never know, my tastes always change.

Who are your style icons?

The people who inspire me most are probably style bloggers. Out of the celebrities, I'm mad about Alexa Chung - she's always impeccable and effortless.

That one time I was in Marie Claire magazine

So... I'm in Marie Claire this month. I've got a little snippet in a street style section. Here's how this happened:

It was way back in February. I was working at Anthro, putting some go-backs away, and all of a sudden these three really fashionable people walk in. They approach me. They basically say, "We're from Marie Claire and we want to take your picture." Well, that's all I heard anyway. In my mind I was thinking, "ME?!??!" I ask my manager if I can take a 10 so "Marie Claire could take a picture of me" and I felt REALLY cool. Then we go outside and they have me pose on this banister, and I felt like I was going to fall off. The fashionable people were really nice to me and I was really awkward back. And then I went back to work.

... It was a cooler story in my head.

I hope I remember for the next eclipse to get special sunglasses or make some sort of boxy contraption, because I'm pretty sure I did some damage to my eyes yesterday. I just wanted to know what was happening, okay?! Other than that, this weekend was filled with cupcakes and conspiracy theories. (I would totally read a blog that was named that.) Oh, and Matt and I acquired a carton of confetti-filled eggs, so there's that.

I'm pretty sure I got this skirt at Savers my freshman year of high school. Still going strong.

I guess I took an accidental break from blogging this past week. Whoops. BUT I'M BACK! This week's been full of mostly work, naps, eating, and sleeping. I'm real exciting. In the rare downtime that I have, I've been rewatching Downton Abbey with Matt. He won't admit it... but he's addicted. I just know it. Oh, and I made these Easy Cinnamon Roll Muffins today and accidentally caramelized the brown sugar crumble on the top. It was delicious.

Thanks for all the suggestions on white shirts and chambray shirts from my last post! It looks like a lot of you recommend J.Crew and Madewell for both. I've gotta try them out sometime! As far as this outfit goes... this is my new favorite necklace. I discovered Francesca's Collections the other day, and it is officially my new favorite store to get jewelry at, especially statement necklaces. I love a good statement necklace.

Polka dots, horses, and two questions

Scarves are magical. Really, they are. I got this scarf on a whim at Buffalo Exchange, and boy, am I glad I did. I've been experimenting with ways to wear it, and shawl-style came naturally. And good thing, too, because horses and oversized polka dots are meant to be worn together.

Now two questions:

Who makes the best plain white tee?
Who makes the best chambray shirt?

I'm asking because those are really the only two tops I plan on wearing this summer. Answer away!

A Sunday outfit

Probably one of my favorite things to do lately is learn how to bake and cook. Even right at this moment, I'm typing this while watching Food Network (Giada at Home, of course). This morning, I had the urge to bake muffins. I made these super yummy orange muffins from Annie's Eats. They turned out pretty well... besides a clump of baking soda that Matt bit into... Oops. Also, I just realized that I used baking soda instead of baking powder. Amateur hour.

This outfit was partly inspired by my good friend Elaine over at Clothed Much... I love how she wears her yellow flower pin on her blouse like so. Usually, I wear the flower pin in my hair, but seeing as this was my church outfit, I didn't want to get confused with all of the small children that also like to wear huge flowers in their hair. (Maybe I should take a hint...?)

Friday was my birthday! Which made this weekend my birthday weekend. So much goodness...

Amber and Steven threw me a Birthday Eve party in which we ate Little Cesaer's Hot-N-Readys and played Clue. Then we talked about our feelings.
Went to La Grande Orange with Matt and got my favorite breakfast - Mia's French Pancakes with Strawberries and Honey. YUM!
Opened presents! Among the goodies are: Two Giada de Laurentiis cookbooks (she is my idol), a bunch of Trader Joe's dark chocolate bars with speculoos cookie spread, a mini muffin pan, and a dandelion bracelet! Oh, and Matt's mom found me a bunch of his schoolwork from when he was 7... too cute.
Made Matt go shopping with me... I found THE CUTEST tankini at Old Navy on super sale. It's a yellow-green color with polka dots and bow details. Birthday magic.
Went to Cheesecake Factory with my family. The Reese's cheesecake gets me every time.

It was a wonderful weekend and I'm happy to have spent so much time with Matt and our families. Thanks everyone for all the birthday wishes!

I'm just about in my third month of working at Anthro, and let me tell you, I still basically window shop the entire time while I'm working. I don't think it will ever end. Since tomorrow is my birthday, here are a few items I wouldn't mind treating myself to:

My fallback outfit

My fallback outfit is a striped tee and pants. And of course, a scarf in my hair. Easy peasy. I'm still getting used to these high-waisted jeans. They kind of make me look like I have hips in these pictures, but I totally don't. Do not be fooled.

This weekend was uncharacteristically eventful. On Saturday, I made the most amazing red velvet cupcakes for a cousin-in-law's wedding. Then, I went to the Arizona Blogger Conference in Scottsdale with Miss Ashley Nielson. Great job to the Phoenix Style Collective for working so hard on it! I'm thinking I'll probably write a separate post for that one - there is so much to say, both about the event and my thoughts on blogging lately. On Sunday, Matt and I went down to Tucson to visit his grandparents. I love spending time with Matt's family. I've never had a close relationship with my grandparents, so marrying in to a family where I get two full sets of grandparents is a treat for me. (Plus, they have a cute little dog with a face like an ewok so... yeah, there's that.)

My favorite place in Phoenix

I think my most favorite thing to do in the world (not an exaggeration) is feed the koi fish in the pond at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix. Matt suspects it's a power thing. I mean, I have the fish food (which are actually Cheerios), and the fish just gather at my feet. I just want to be loved, okay?

Anyway, to me, it's like Disneyland, but better, because there's no walking and getting tired and waiting in lines. And feeding the fish is just SO FUN. So, if you live in Phoenix, you should go (and soon, because it closes in the summer)!

PS We also got a Jiro Dreams of Sushi poster for free! Matt and I have been dying to see that film, but it's not playing anywhere in Arizona. Has anyone seen it out there?

A coral scarf and cookie butter

Trader Joe's is my new obsession. Not only can you get amazing hummus and pita chips, but you can also get a dark chocolate bar filled with speculoos cookie spread. I want one for every minute of the day. They also have something called Cookie Butter, which is apparently the same stuff inside of the chocolate bar, but in a jar, like peanut butter. But it's COOKIE butter. Is this real life? Has anyone tried it?

Anyway, this amazing scarf was sent to me by Stacie from Scarves Dot Net, and I am in love. First off, it's this coral pink color that is my absolute favorite right now (see my header?). Second, it has these great tassel details that look so great when it's folded and layered. Third, Scarves Dot Net has this amazing feature on their website that teaches you more than 50 ways to tie a scarf. Mind blowing. (I tied my scarf using the Muffler II method - my usual technique of choice.)

Today I'm baking cupcakes for a cousin-in-law's wedding reception! Happy weekend :)

A sweater dress and a Beck Sondergaard scarf

It's in the 90s in Arizona already and I'm wearing a sweater dress. Clearly, I'm in denial that summer has come so soon. But guys, I got this on super sale for barely anything so I just had to wear it. I decided to brighten it up with a summery scarf to make it a little more season-appropriate.

Do any of you guys remember this scarf from my Anthro Picks a few weeks back? It has amazing colors and shapes and trees and hot air balloons on it! I thought it belonged to me because the day I discovered it, I saw hot air balloons in the sky and it made my heart smile. Well, good things come to those who wait because it went on super sale and I (naturally) snagged it up. I just love it and can't stop looking at it. For those who are interested in finding a similar scarf, the artist is Beck Sondergaard and it turns out they make tons of illustrated whimsical scarves. I'm so glad Anthro carried this one, because it looks like they don't have any stockists outside of Europe.

Today, I'm going to work on making business cards for the Arizona Blogger Conference. Is anybody going? I'm also going to play Super Mario on Wii with Matt's little sister... I'm always the yellow mushroom and I often squeal with how cute it is.

Monopoly

Last night, Matt and I played Monopoly with our BFFs, Amber and Steven. Now, I've played Monopoly with Amber and Steven more than a few times while Matt was gone. The following is always true:

I am the puppy piece.
I somehow land on Community Chest and Chance every single time while the other players amass their fortunes in real estate.
I make jingles for as many properties as I can. "Cry Me a River" for Waterworks, the theme song to Reading Rainbow for Reading Railroad, that kind of thing.
I collect the hot pink properties solely because I like the color.
I lose, bitterly, and my puppy piece ends up sitting in Steven's top hat piece for the rest of the game.

Why I continue playing, I do not know. Perhaps it is just the hope that someday, someday, the fates will allow me to win. Just once.

Currently... (I've seen this on Sometimes Sweet and I always love reading them! Here I go.)

Reading: East of Eden by John Steinbeck, my absolute favorite book of all time.

Watching: Community. The last episode was genius - I loved seeing Abed's portrayal of the characters, and thinking about how each actor was playing Abed playing their character. And Troy's truth serum monologue!

Working on: My hefty to-do list that is a page long. I crossed out about half of it yesterday! Hopefully I can knock out the other half this weekend.

Thinking about: How to find balance in my life. I've been thinking lately that perhaps I've become a person who overcommits. As a result, I've been feeling a little burned out on all my projects and feeling like I don't have enough 'me' time. (And I need that 'me' time.)

Anticipating: Our next adventure... To be announced. There's still one thing that needs to get done before I know 100% for sure it will actually happen, so I don't want to jinx it yet!

Listening to: Sufjan Stevens' Age of Adz. Along with Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens is one of my favorite musicians. This album was inspired by a schizophrenic artist who painted space scenes, and I love how you can hear just that.

Eating: Lots of vanilla almond granola and Greek Gods Strawberry and Honey yogurt from Sprouts. As obsessed as I am with granola lately, I find it to be a bit expensive for how much I eat it. Does anyone have any good granola recipes out there?

Wishing: For that one thing that needs to happen (see 'Anticipating'). Crossing my fingers!

Mint, red, and Andrew Bird

Last night, we saw one of my absolute favorite musicians, Andrew Bird, in concert. It was my third time seeing him (Matt's fourth), and he always puts on a great show. Lots of whistling, and violin playing, and looping, and gramophone spinning, and so much more. He played a lot of new songs, which I enjoyed, but I was especially attached to Scythian Empire... When I was looking into my church back in 2007, I would listen to that album (Armchair Apocrypha) while driving to my missionary lessons. Now, that song always reminds me of that extremely special and personal time in my life.

Another feeling I had - he also played lots of songs reminiscent of his earlier albums, with lots of American folk and bluegrass influences. Did you know I lived in Knoxville,Tennessee for three months for an internship? I fell in love with its culture, food, and of course, music. I would listen to its local bluegrass station, WDVX, in my car while driving through lush green forest areas and I would just feel so peaceful and happy inside. Hearing Andrew Bird perform those songs with the same 'feel' to them made me long for Tennessee again. It's one of my dreams to live back there again someday...

Whew, I'm getting real personal today. Bringing it back to the surface, I wore this outfit a few days ago. Probably one of my favorite outfits lately - I just love the pops of mint and red.

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend! Here are a few happenings around here...

Matt and I had a picnic on Friday... The weather has been absolutely lovely lately in Arizona. We ate sandwiches and watched baby ducks, turtles, and hummingbirds (which was basically like Disneyland to me).
We've also been watching lots of movies... This weekend, we watched a few of my favorites: Chicago, Pride and Prejudice, and TRON. Yes, Tron. Am I the only one with an unhealthy obsession with that film?
I made amazing oatmeal cookie pancakes... and then I dubbed myself as the BEST. BREAKFAST. COOK. EVER.
We found this place in Mesa that had these awesome rugs... how sweet is Marilyn behind me? Just around the corner there was a Justin Bieber rug, too...
I decided that we always need to live really, really close to a Trader Joe's.

This necklace is from the lovely Michelle at Twig Creative. I am so envious of her talent! I like to think of this necklace as a little slice of an orange... made out of gold glitter. It's been one of my favorite accessories these last few days!

A vintage skirt and floral wedges

I found this skirt while thrifting with Chelsea, Courtney, and Sarah in a secret place filled with vintage treasures. Thrift stores are my favorite places to find knee-length skirts - and this one fit me perfectly. Huzzah! That day, I also drove all by myself into the wilderness that is downtown Phoenix... Needless to say, it was quite a proud day for me. Oh, and these floral wedges are proving way more versatile than I thought lately. Maybe it's because it's practically summer in AZ, but I just want to pair them with every single outfit I wear.

Today was my day off, so Matt and I went on a tour of the closing Blockbusters in our area to snag sweet DVDs for cheap. Not a bad way to spend the day, eh? Your loss is my gain, BB.

Shabby Apple Bellissima Dress

Some tidbits from my days lately:

Matt and I got yummy yogurt smoothies with boba at The Street today in Mesa. Usually, I like Lollicups in Chandler for my boba drinks, but we were in the area and thought, why not? It. Was. DELICIOUS.
We also went to a Japanese grocery store and I felt nostalgic seeing a few products that we loved back when we lived in Japan. Inversely, we went to a supermarket the night before and stood in the massive cereal aisle and thought about how the Japanese survive on mainly cornflakes as their choice of cereal. How do they do it?
Also in the supermarket trip, we stocked up on lots of post-Easter Cadbury chocolates. Has Easter become my second favorite holiday (after Christmas, of course)?
I made Matt drive a day and a half after he got back, fully aware of the differences between driving here and in Japan. I think it's funny that he now tries to back up into every parking spot and once flashed his hazards as a 'thank you' to a driver who let him in their lane.
I've caught Matt up on lots of important American pop culture anecdotes... such as who Pitbull is and what "yolo" means.

It's been fun. Last night, we were taking a night drive and Matt suggested that we embrace our Southwestern desert and take more photos in it. So this is us, attempting to cherish our roots of dirt, shrubbery, and the occasional piece of trash. I dig.

This dress is a recent acquisition from Shabby Apple. I looove having this bright dress in my closet, and the little scallops make me so happy. I definitely want to add more dresses and less separates to my closet as summer comes along...

High-Waisted Jeans

Hope you guys had a fabulous Easter! Guess what? Matt's finally home! He arrived on Wednesday night, and I've been on cloud nine ever since. It's fun to have him back. I feel like every little thing is an adventure with him. Matt and I have been very different in terms of reculturization, though (did I just make that term up?). For example, when I came back to the US, all I wanted to do was eat all the American foods I missed in Japan. Matt is basically the complete opposite - he misses Japanese food instead. Hm. We did have our fair share of American-style pizza though. YUM.

I got these BDG jeans at Urban a few weeks ago (my brand of choice for pants and denim and such). I'm getting used to the high-waisted aka 'mom' fit on these, but for the most part I find them much more comfortable than normal-waisted (?) jeans. Oh, and did you check out my bag? Madewell just opened at Scottsdale Fashion Square - and let me tell you - it is beautiful. So many bright colors everywhere! This bag was a special edition for its grand opening - it has really fun Arizona facts on it, which I love. (But yes, I actually did know that Arizona's official neckwear is the bolo tie...)

Shabby Apple Garden Isle dress

This is my new favorite dress from Shabby Apple. It's pink. It has a Betty Draper Francis silhouette. And it's modest. It is the unicorn of all dresses. Amber said that this dress is the one piece in my wardrobe that just screams 'Kristine', and I would say that I agree wholeheartedly.

This weekend was filled with work and HUNGER GAMES. Yes, I am a Hunger Games fangirl. I'm a little quiet about it, but my obsession is there nonetheless. All I can say is:

The tracker jacker scene was awesome and I felt like I was watching a Britney Spears video.
I want to live in the Capitol solely due to those amazing costumes.

I think I'll see it again on Tuesday.

Oh hey, remember me? I haven't blogged in a while. But it's cool, you guys are doing just fine without me. I got a bit sick this past week with a fever and head cold... which means I've been spending a ton of time with Netflix. Here are just a few movies I've watched in the past few days...

Sense and Sensibility. As I tweeted a few days ago, BEST misunderstanding ever.
Big Fish. So magical.
An Affair to Remember. Guys, I cried my eyes out in this movie. That doesn't say much because I kind of cry in every movie... but you can imagine.
Ballerina. Oh, to be a Russian ballerina.
Pride and Prejudice. My go-to movie for Sundays and sickness.
Seamless. A good old fashion industry flick.

This outfit is one that I've worn multiple times in the past few weeks. I'm an unapologetic outfit repeater, okay? I want to wear this skirt ALL THE TIME. It's so comfortable, it doesn't wrinkle, and it's a different silhouette from all the A-line skirts I own. I'm considering getting it in black as well. Amber gave me this sweater because it shrunk a bit in the dryer. I should get Amber to shrink more of her clothes...

Instagramming and some thoughts

I feel like I'm in some sort of limbo period of my life lately. I just got back from the biggest adventure of my life so far, and now I'm waiting to start a new one. I'm not ready to say exactly what I will be doing or where I will be going, but I am most likely going back to school this summer, if everything works out. And I'm crossing my fingers that everything works out.

I am so lucky that Matt supports and encourages my dreams. If not for him, I would honestly put my aspirations aside and think to myself, "I'm not good enough. I can't do this. I'll fail. It's not worth it." It's something I unfortunately have told myself many, many times. I still feel that way as I make my preparations. Matt helps me see the good in me, even if I have to try really hard to see it. I know I'd be letting both of us down if I didn't at least try.

That's where I'm at right now. Waiting in my in-between phase. Wondering how everything will work out...
