A 35-Foot-Long Camera That Exposes 6-Foot-Tall Negatives

For his project Vanishing Cultures, photographer Dennis Manarchy is traveling around the country documenting various cultures with a one-of-a-kind, 35-foot-long camera called “Eye of America”. Styled like an old fashioned large format camera, it’s so large that a person can work comfortably inside it. The negatives measure 6×4.5 feet, and are so large that windows must be used as lightboxes to examine them. The detail in a portrait subjects’ eyeball alone is a thousand times greater than what you get with the average negative. Resulting portraits will be featured on prints 2 stories tall.

Now at CES we've had a chance to get our mitts on the device to see what it's like in the ~~flesh~~ plastic. If you're just a little bit curious, why not join us for a short trip?

PowerSkin SpareOne Unboxing

We took this device back to the Engadget trailer at CES and every single member of staff played with it, fascinated by the concept. It looks like your average cheap cellphone, except where the screen would sit is a transparent plastic void where a prominently branded battery sits instead. It's surprisingly solid and well put-together, opening the battery compartment reveals a sizable capacitor -- which is what we think is the real hero behind its purportedly long life. Because of the stripped down nature of the phone, we weren't able to understand why it wasn't initially making calls. The two flashing LEDs indicate battery life and signal strength, but that's all the phone's gonna let you know.

Call quality was basic and loud (like a phone from a decade ago), which sounds harsh to our ears, which have been cosseted by years of noise-canceling microphones. The only thing we weren't able to judge was its USP: the length of its battery life is something we'll have to address in a few year's time, assuming the world hasn't ended before then. But here's the kicker -- judging the phone on its merits today, would you buy one of these over a cheaper Nokia C1 (or the admittedly rare Motofone F3?). We'd be a little more confident about the phone if the warranty of the device was longer than a year, you know? Still, we'd feel reasonably comfortable keeping one of these in the first aid kit for when the Robopocalypsehits, hoping that we'd never really need to use it. It'll be available at some point this quarter, will take any GSM SIM or microSIM (it has an adapter) and cost $50.

Florida Man Guilty of DUI Manslaughter Sues Victim (ABC News)

A man who had pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter stemming from a crash near Tampa, Fla., on Christmas Day 2007 now denies causing the crash that killed three of the four people in the vehicle he hit.

David Belniak has sued the estate of Ray McWilliams, the now-deceased driver of the other vehicle, for more than $15,000, saying it was actually McWilliams who caused the crash by abruptly changing lanes, according to theTampa Bay Times.

McWilliams initially survived the crash but later died. Belniak was sentenced to 12 years in prison, where he remains.

The money is to compensate Belniak for medical bills, "pain and suffering," and "loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life," according to the suit.(read more)

Cruise Captain Says He 'Tripped' Into Lifeboat, Couldn't Get Out

The captain of the Italian cruise ship gave a slapstick explanation of how he ended up safely in a lifeboat instead of going down with his ship, saying he tripped and fell into the boat as it was being lowered into the sea, Italian media reported today.

"I had no intention of escaping," Francesco Schettino, 52, said during his first court hearing Tuesday, according to Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper.

"I was helping some passengers put the life boat to sea. At a certain point the mechanism for lowering it, blocked. We had to force it. Suddenly the system unblocked itself and I tripped and I found myself inside the life boat with a number of passengers."

Once in the lifeboat that was lowered into the sea, Schettino insisted to the court that it was "impossible to go back onboard."

The captain also reportedly admitted to the court that he lied at one point when he assured officials that he had dropped anchor shortly after the Costa Concordia slammed into a rock to stabilize the luxury liner.

However a video by the Guardia di Finanza who arrived onsite 10 minutes after the disaster clearly shows that the anchor had not been lowered. Schettino admitted Tuesday that he lied about the anchor, the newspaper reported.

The luxury cruise ship was carrying more than 4,000 passengers and crew when it struck rocks Friday evening near Giglio off the coast of Tuscany, during a close pass to shore. At least 11 people were killed in the aftermath when the ship keeled over. Nearly two dozen people are still missing, including an American couple from Minnesota.(read more)

Matt Every’s unusual putter raises some eyebrows at the Sony Open

Just when you thought the putter craze on the PGA Tour couldn't get more absurd, Matt Every managed to take things to a whole new level at the Sony Open.

After getting accustomed to watching Robert Garrigus roll with a toy-sized flat stick and a host of players go to the belly putter in the last year, Every threw the golf world a curveball when he showed up at the first full-field event of the season sporting a brick-shaped putter that looked like something out of a sci-fi movie.

The BlackHawk putter, as Golfweek's Alex Miceli noted, is only being marketed in North and South Florida PGA sections at the moment. But with Every rolling it well at the Sony, you have to think someone else might be desperate enough to try it in the future.

Even though the putter looks like a brick and a vacuum cleaner mated, if it makes putts and helps you cash checks, that's all that really matters at the end of the day. And here you thought the driver was the only club in the bag that was supposed to have an oversized head.

L.A. Makes Condom Use Mandatory for Porn Performers

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles City Council, 9-1, approved a new ordinance Tuesday requiring that all adult film actors wear condoms when filming within the city limits.

The ordinance, when it goes into effect, will allow the LAPD to perform spot checks on any set once a film permit is issued.

Officials from LAPD, Cal/OSHA and the city attorney’s office will make recommendations on how to implement the ordinance.

The vote was a second procedural vote on the ordinance and required only a simple majority of the council to give final approval.

The Free Speech Coalition said that the adult industry trade group is in discussions with industry leaders and considering options for next steps.

Alongside Sony's pair of new Xperia handsets, the company's taken the chance to offer up some new smart accessories to augment those very Android phones. Here's the SmartWatch. The spiritual successor to LiveView, the clippable watch detaches from the flexible watch strap. In fact, we've been told that the device can be transplanted to any watch strap. It's connected to Bluetooth through your phone -- acting as a notifier and music play as well as the capability to answer calls and check-up on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The capacitive touchscreen ably picked up our prods, although you'll need to tap the side-button to wake the display. Thanks to the lightweight rubbery strap, it's not a chore to wear either, with several strap color options readied for launch. It's not attempting to match the resolution of your smartphone, although it plays nice with any Sony phone running Android 2.1 and above. We go wrists-on after the brea, but you can expect the device to adorn your arm some time this quarter at around $149.

Tim Tebow Honored with Two Songs by ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ Rocker

In a tribute to the Denver quarterback, British singer John Parr told ABCNews.com that he has written two songs to honor Tebow, whom he has never met.

“It’s that kind of everyday guy that just, that people invest their faith in him, but he’s just ordinary and I love that,” Parr said.

Although the song was recorded before Christmas, Parr’s re-released version of his 1985 No. 1 hit, “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion),” as “Tim Tebow’s Fire,” complete with altered lyrics, recently went viral.

“I can see a new horizon underneath the blazin’ sky. I’ll be where the eagle’s flyin’ higher and higher. Gonna be a man in motion, all I needs is my Broncos team. Take me where my future’s lyin,’ Tim Tebow’s Fire,” Parr crones in the parody version of the song.

The day Tim Tebow signed with the Broncos, Parr said he happened to be at ESPN, where he was asked to play “St. Elmo’s Fire.” The rocker said when they brought him a Tebow t-shirt, he changed the lyrics to include the quarterback’s name, almost as a joke. Thus, the song was born.(read more)
