Grateful Dead Archivist

The University Library of the University of California, Santa Cruz, seeks an enterprising, creative, and service-oriented archivist to join the staff of Special Collections & Archives (SC&A) as Archivist for the Grateful Dead Archive. This is a potential career status position. The Archivist will be part of a dynamic, collegial, and highly motivated department dedicated to building, preserving, promoting, and providing maximum access both physically and virtually to one of the Library's most exciting and unique collections, The Grateful Dead Archive (GDA). The UCSC University Library utilizes innovative approaches to allow the discovery, use, management, and sharing of information in support of research, teaching, and learning.

Under the general direction of the Head of Special Collections and Archives, the GDA Archivist will provide managerial and curatorial oversight of the Grateful Dead Archive, plan for and oversee the physical and digital processing of Archives related material, and promote the GDA to the public and facilitate its use by scholars, fans, and students.

MINIMUM Qualifications:

• Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent accredited graduate archives management program.

• Significant, demonstrated experience working with books, manuscripts, photographs, recordings, or other material in a special collections & archives environment.

• Knowledge of the access tools for special collections and archival material and the standards and procedures for their preservation and conservation.

• Demonstrated experience developing processing plans and creating finding aids in accordance with national standards.

• Knowledge of and ability to maintain awareness of developments in archival processing, digital information technologies, and their uses in special collections and archives.

• Expert knowledge in the history and scholarship of contemporary popular music, or American vernacular culture, preferably the history and influence of the Grateful Dead.

• Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills.

• Demonstrated oral, written and interpersonal communication skills sufficient to promote and present the archive to multiple audiences.

• Prior experience directing the work of others.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience working in public services in an academic environment.

• Demonstrated experience working on outreach and other donor related activities.

General Information:
Professional librarians at UC are academic appointees. They are entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and a generous benefit program including an excellent retirement system. Inventive Uses for the Afterbirth Include Placenta Pills, Objects, Trees

After the baby is born and the cooing in the delivery room begins, parents may do a variety of things with the placenta -- maybe take a picture, poke it a bit, or just divert their eyes and let the nurse take it away.

A teddy bear made of human placenta has set off an international storm of disgust and support for the idea of making afterbirth into a keepsake.

Whatever parents do, it probably wouldn't match London-based designer Alex Green's idea of turning the baby's placenta into a teddy bear.

"It just looks like a brown leather teddy bear and you get closer and say, hmm what strange leather is that," said Green.

Green claims he was motivated to make the bears to shake up how people think of placenta.

"I was very interested in how it was discarded unceremoniously as medical waste, why it's discarded and how we could bring it back…" said Green, who thought placentas deserved a symbolic treatment whether they're saved or not. "It was really about provoking a debate about placentas and how we treat them."

Perry says band could continue without Tyler

Has Steven Tyler quit Aerosmith? It sure seems so.

After 40 years fronting one of rock ’n’ roll’s most successful bands, the singer famous for his elastic lips and shrill scream has apparently decided to walk that way, and his departure is raising questions about whether Aerosmith could carry on with a new singer.

The band, which has been roiled by internal tension for months, is not confirming the split. But after a concert last week, Tyler told the British magazine Classic Rock that he had pulled out of the band’s scheduled tour of South America and will focus on a solo career, which he referred to as “brand Tyler.’’ In the same interview, Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford mused on the possibility of replacing the 61-year-old singer, prompting fans, disc jockeys, and others to wonder about the band’s commercial viability with a new or unknown singer.(read more)

World's First iPhone Worm Rick-Rolls Wallpaper

Users of insecure, jailbroken iPhones are reporting their smartphones have been hit by a worm that turns their lock wallpaper to that of 1980s pop star Rick Astley.

It may seem mostly harmless with its wallpaper-changing payload, but the first-ever worm to spread via iPhones could be an omen of more sinister attacks to come.

SophosLabs is warning iPhone users who have jailbroken their devices to ensure they have not left their smartphones open to infection.

Affected users in Australia have reported the wallpaper shown when they lock their iPhones is changed to an image of 1980s British pop star Rick Astley, with a message:

ikee is never going to give you up

The worm, which could have spread to other countries, is capable of breaking into jailbroken iPhones if their owners have not changed the default password ("alpine") after installing SSH. Once in place, the worm hunts for other iPhones that are similarly vulnerable on the mobile phone network, and installs itself again.

This isn't the first time hackers have taken advantage of poorly secured jailbroken iPhones that have not had their SSH passwords changed. About a week ago, iPhone users in the Netherlands were told they would have to pay 5 Euros ransom to gain control of their cellphones after a hacker used a similar trick -- although on that occasion the attack did not spread in a viral manner.

This latest incident, however, raises the stakes -- and it wouldn't be hard to imagine that more hackers might become intrigued about the possibility of striking jailbroken iPhones in this fashion to deploy more sinister payloads than an image of Rick Astley in future.

Winner declared in space elevator race

A space race lifted off Friday in Southern California, only this one involved elevators.

Powering their laser-controlled robot to climb a 900-meter-long cable, the team from Seattle-based LaserMotive was crowned the winner in NASA's Space Elevator Power-Beaming Challenge game on Friday.

Held at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base in Lancaster, Calif., the challenge pits teams against each other to see whose robotic space elevator can inch up the cable the quickest in under 7.5 minutes. A helicopter holds the steel cable in place as each robotic elevator races to the top. The LaserMotive crew crossed the finish line four times, the fastest time being 3 minutes and 48 seconds.

The goal behind the games is to build a robotic climber that could someday be turned into a space elevator that would carry supplies into orbit without need of a ship. The elevator would rise up a tether that rotates with the Earth and be capable of carrying about 10 tons of payload.

As the winner, LaserMotive will take home a check of $900,000 from the sponsor, Spaceward Foundation. If the team had been able to climb the entire tether in three minutes or less at a speed of at least 5 meters per second, it could have won the top prize of $2 million.

The other two teams, the Kansas City Space Pirates and the University of Saskatchewan Space Design Team (USST), both ran into technical troubles, preventing them from reaching the top of the cable in any of their attempts.

NASA's Space Elevator race has seen its ups and downs for the past few years, with contestants coming close but not quite attaining the grand prize.

An additional $1.1 million in prize money is still available, according to the Spaceward Foundation, so another challenge will be held in the future to see if any team can win the race at 5 meters per second.

The Baywatch star appeared to steady himself against the wall as he walked on to the stage to present the Best Rock award to Green Day, and delivered his lines in slurred speech with a glazed expression.

WWE star Batista, who came on afterwards to present an award to Beyonce, said: “Oh God, I want to party with David Hasselhoff.”

Host Katy Perry pretended that the actor had run off with her drink. Reclining on a chaise longue with an empty champagne flute in her hand, she said: “Well, this is a surreal life. I’m surrounded by stars, listening to incredible music and being served chilled champagne by the Hoff… Hoff? Bring back that bottle!"

In the late 19th and early 20th century, enigmatic photographer T. Enami (1859-1929) captured a number of 3D stereoviews depicting life in Meiji-period Japan.

A stereoview consists of a pair of nearly identical images that appear three-dimensional when viewed through a stereoscope, because each eye sees a slightly different image. This illusion of depth can also be recreated with animated GIFs like the ones here, which were created from Flickr images posted by Okinawa Soba. Dallas-based 7-Eleven's had a few proprietary wines on shelves for some time, among them Sonoma Crest and Thousand Oaks, but today comes word that the convenience store's actually in the private-label business thanks to a partnership with its Japanese sibling, Seven-Eleven Japan. And, whoa, Yosemite Road is quite the bargain: Says the press release, both the Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon will sell for $3.99 a bottle. Who needs a Trader Joe's, anyway?

"We prefer to think of it as value," says 7-Eleven spokesperson Carole Davidson, when Unfair Park said of the Napa Valley-produced product, "Wow, that sure is cheap." She also laughed. "But, yes, it is inexpensive. ... We do have a couple of proprietary labels, but they're a little higher-priced than this offering."

YouTube has announced it is to partner Will Ferrell's comedy website Funny Or Die, offering up a channel featuring a boatload of the site's comedic content.

Funny Or Die has been around since 2007 and is the brainchild of Will Ferrell and writer Adam McKay. The site has garnered something of a cult following due to the amount of exclusive skits that they post, usually with A-list talent involved.(read more)

59-year-old shocks mourners who believed they were burying crash victim

RIO DE JANEIRO - A Brazilian bricklayer reportedly killed in a car crash shocked his mourning family by showing up alive at his funeral.

Relatives of Ademir Jorge Goncalves, 59, had identified him as the victim of a Sunday night car crash in Parana state in southern Brazil, police said.

As is customary in Brazil, the funeral was held the following day, which happened to be the holiday of finados when Brazilians visit cemeteries to honor the dead.

JULIE Boyde's wedding night was ruined when she discovered she was allergic to her husband Mike's sperm.

The couple had been lovers for two years before they got married and decided to have unprotected sex for the first time on their wedding night.

Almost immediately the bride was in unbearable pain. She found out it was because of Mike's sperm.

Plans of conceiving a baby have had to be abandoned reluctantly as it seems Julie's own body destroys the sperm.

Mike, 27, and Julie, 26, from Ambridge, Pennsylvania, started going out while at university and became engaged two years later, finally having a dream wedding in 2005. They wanted to consummate their union on their wedding night.

"Before we were always very careful and used protection - this time we didn't,' said Julie, 26.

"We figured, "we're married, if we get pregnant, we get pregnant".

"Pretty much right after I knew something was not right because I was in a lot of pain.

"The pain that I was feeling was inside, like somebody sticking needles up inside of me like a real painful burning.

"It was really scary."

The pain, and at times blisters, would go on for weeks, she said.

"On a scale of one to ten, it's pretty much ten," she said, describing the pain.

After numerous medical tests, the couple were eventually told that Julie suffers from seminal plasma hypersensitivity, which affects thousands of women in Australia.

"It can be systemic and present anaphylaxis where individuals have not just localised discomfort. They actually can have hives, soft tissue swelling … and, in the severe situations … they can ... potentially die." said immunologist Jonathan Bernstein, of Cincinnati Medical Centre University.

In short, Julie's body attacks Mike's sperm and makes it inactive.

The couple have started adoption proceedings to start their family.

The couple are featured in a documentary, Strange Sex, on the ABC in the US.

Could Humans Infect Pets With H1N1?

Until this week, many veterinarians asserted that it was a myth that house cats could catch the deadly H1N1 flu from their owners.

Those veterinarians, along with other health experts, are revising their views after an Iowa Department of Public Health announcement Wednesday that the virus has been confirmed in an indoor 13-year-old cat, which likely contracted the illness from two flu-sick humans in its home.

Although all of the victims have since recovered, this latest H1N1 animal case puts the focus on humans as the primary carriers of the illness, which experts don't even want to call "swine" flu anymore.

"We're seeing reverse zoonosis, with the virus jumping from people to animals," Alfonso Torres told Discovery News, explaining that several ferrets have also been infected, resulting in at least one pet ferret death in Nebraska.

"In theory, cats could infect humans, but there is no evidence for that yet," added Torres, former chief veterinary officer of the United States who is now associate dean for public policy at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Torres was "not entirely surprised" by the diagnosis in a cat. He said that until four years ago, no evidence supported that felines could catch viruses from other species.
