It’s the Hauppauge HD DVR and it was just reviewed by ExtremeTech here on their website. Before I get into their review, let me just quickly go over what the HD DVR is exactly. It’s basically an external video capture device that allows you to record video via component video inputs at resolutions up to 1080i. Video is encoded in H.264 using a hardware-based encoder and audio is recorded in either AAC or Dolby Digital. The unit comes with an IR blaster that allows it to control external set-top boxes. It’s also important to note that the HD DVR requires a PC to work. The PC is used to run the HD PVR application and is also used to store the resulting recordings since the HD DVR does not come with any storage itself. Sounds like a bit of a pain eh? Yeah.. sure seems it. This basically means you’ll need a PC near your cable box to use the Hauppauge HD DVR.

Now on the plus side - this device captures HD video (granted it’s 1080i/720p video) via component signals. This means you’ll be able to hook this device up to your cable/dish box and record HD premium channels via the component outputs. Now granted this is not necessarily the highest quality video but let’s be real here - cable video is only at most 720p these days anyhow. You do get slightly lower video quality since the device captures via an analog signal as opposed to digital - but it’s still much much better than say recording from an S-Video or Composite input.

So, what did ExtremeTech think of the unit? Here’s their verdict:

If you’ve been looking to record high def video on your PC from set top boxes, then the HD DVR works fine as a time shifting device. But expect conversion to other formats to be problematic.

Yeah.. apparently ExtremeTech found the included conversion utility to be rather buggy.. but if you have the time and patience you can probably find other workarounds for that. Another interesting notion mentioned in the article - don’t forget that you can now record HD content from other types of devices via component outputs. This means attaching say an Xbox 360 and recording your game play onto your PC for others to view.

If you’re interested in the new T-Mobile 3G network, then you should definitely take a read at this PC Magazine article which talks about the first 3G phones available for the carrier. First off - please remember that while both T-Mobile and AT&T utilize the same radio technology, they use completely different frequencies. Thus, unless your 3G phone supports a variety of frequencies for UMTS/HSDPA, you’re out of luck when it comes to using your T-Mobile phone on other 3G networks. You will be able to use 2G networks of course.

The phones covered in the article include the Nokia 6263, Nokia 3555, Samsung SGH-t819, and Samsung SGH-t639. It looks like the initial phone selection is .. how shall we say it.. sucky? PC Magazine did somewhat like the Nokia 6263.. but again - don’t expect anything awe-inspiring. It’s also important to note that the 3G network is only available right now in New York. Rollout nationwide will proceed as the year goes by.

Well if you’re iSuppli, you go ahead and rip it apart to perform a “teardown analysis” of course. It’s almost a tradition now to hear what a significant product costs after it’s been introduced into the market and the iPhone 3G is no different here. According to iSuppli, the new 8GB iPhone 3G is approximately fifty dollars less than the 1st generation iPhone. Initial production costs for the iPhone 3G is estimated to be at $174.33 (this consists of the iPhone’s 3G bill of materials and manufacturing expenses. It does not include costs such as software development, shipping, packaging, accessories that go with the phone, marketing etc). Compare this number to last year’s number of $227 and yes.. the company did indeed shave dollars off the manufacturing process. This isn’t too surprising since the major upgrades to the new iPhone are the 3G support and the inclusion of GPS. Going to a plastic backing, and sticking with the same panel has allowed Apple to focus on reducing overall costs of the iPhone and thereby increasing sales margins.

iSuppli estimates that profit margins for the new phone will be around 55 percent. How did it get this number? Here’s the breakdown:

Apple manufacturing and bill of materials costs for 8GB iPhone 3G: $174.33

Apple pays $50 dollars for IP royalties

AT&T is estimated to be paying a $300 subsidy per 8GB iPhone to Apple making the 8GB actually worth $499 ($199 + $300).

Thus $499 - $224.33 = $274.67 which is a 55 percent profit margin. NICE

If you’re curious as to the components found in the phone - make sure to check out the iSuppli webpage here.

Just a little heads up in case you don’t follow the gaming world all that much. Sony has a new video store open within the PlayStation Store which is accessible to those with the PlayStation 3 console. The new service is now live and you can download movies, television shows or original programming for a price of course. Before you try out the service, make sure to get the latest Sony PS3 update for the PS3.

The new service will initially have roughly 300 movie titles and around 1200 TV episodes. A portion of the content will be available in both standard definition and in high definition formats. Studios that are a part of this launch include 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate Entertainment, MGM Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Warner Bros. Entertainment.

Movie rentals will cost between $2.99 to $5.99 depending on the title and the quality of the video. If you want to purchase movies, that will cost you between $9.99 to $14.99.

My two cents on this - first the obvious - it’s about time Sony! It’s amazing how incredibly late the company is in getting a video service up and running for the PS3. The Xbox 360 and Apple TV have an incredible head start - both in terms of technology and in the number of titles. Secondly, what’s up with the size of the HD files? I just purchased “Hell Boy” to test out the service and I’m downloading 7.1 GB of data. WTH?!?!?!? Now I know it’s in high def and all.. but is the file size the same for the other services? Somehow.. I think not. I suppose I’ll have to compare the picture quality of comparable titles to see if the Sony service is better. Finally - I’m sorry… I’m a huge fan of the XrossMediaBar interface but the PlayStation Store UI is just a bit .. well.. ugly.

Unless there’s a compelling reason for me to download movies on the PS3, I’m going to have a hard time wanting switch out of Apple TV and the Xbox 360 console.

According to DigiTimes, the Dell E netbook will begin shipping in August and will have a starting price of $299 which is even cheaper than the new Acer Aspire one - 200 dollars cheaper than the MSI Wind, and yeah.. cheaper than the new ASUS Eee PCs. Now granted, the $299 price tag will probably apply to the lowest end configuration of the E but dang.. you still end up with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor and some flash storage space. If you figure that the $299 price is for the rumored Dell E Classic, then the specs of this notebook should roughly the following:

8.9 inch 1024 x 600 resolution display

1.6GHz Intel Atom processor

Measures 0.82-1.22 x 9.13 x 6.9 inches and weighing 2.2 lbs

3-5 color IMR options

4GB SSD

512MB

3 USB ports

microphone, headphone, VGA, SD slot

0.3 megapixel webcam

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, WiMax, WWAN

4 cell 35 WHr (5 hours battery life) battery

That’s a rough guess of course - we won’t really know what’s in this system until Dell officially announces the final specs… yet at such a cheap price, I’d definitely pick one up for mobile use - if not two! (OK two might be stretching it a bit).

Other tidbits from DigiTrends - the notebook is supposedly being manufactured by Compal Electronics, the panels by Samsung and Chi Mei Optoelectronics, and finally, Dell expects to ship 2 to 3 million units this year.
