Introducing the Leap Motion Sensor Control System

When I first saw the Kinect in action, I was in awe. It was a newly minted interface from Microsoft, and it was sure to turn the gaming world upside down. But for some reason, it didn’t. It was just another game control system, and the novelty wore off after about the first year it was out. People just accepted it, not realizing what an amazing technological breakthrough it really was.

Like the Playstation 3 Eye/Move system, the Kinect has its problems as well – neither of these motion recognition systems work well unless you have a brightly lit environment. The Kinect does it raw – the Playstation solves the light problem by supplying its own with not-so-little colored spheres on its motion controller wands, but this still puts a controller in your hand for a system that technically shouldn’t need them. And then there’s the accuracy issue, which is arguably more a function of how much computing power can be applied to interpreting the motion of the user’s hands or the lit controllers. The Playstation Eye/Move system solves this by putting attitude sensors and accelerometers in the wand controls, which to my mind is little more than a kludge to get around basic flaws [...]
