Ethos is more than just being what you say you are. Sojourner Truth was exactly what she said she was--an uneducated female slave. But did her message contain the full power of what she wanted to say? Why was it that Frederick Douglass was influential in convincing Abraham Lincoln to sign into effect the 13th Amendment? How did Susan B. Anthony rise to the forefront of Women's Rights without ever having spoken in public before? All of these examples had passion. All of these examples had logic. But what made the American people empathize with them? The fact that each one of them embodied what they were saying.

I was at lunch with my Mother-in-Law the other day and I heard a beautiful piano medley of songs from musicals that ended with "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ: Superstar. As the piece neared the climactic point, I could hear the words in my head: "Should I bring him down? Should I scream and shout? Should I speak of love--let my feelings out?" Then I realized I wasn't thinking the words, I was vocally singing them. Then I thought, "I need to record a new album! It's been 3 years!"

As stated in the previous article, you cannot give a speech or presentation without a logical timeline or argument. For those of you reading who are orateaphiles,* you will take great pleasure in knowing that the Method or Residues and the Monroe's Motivated Sequence of persuasion both are based on this very principle of logic. For those of you reading who have no idea what I just said, simply, every form of persuasive speaking is based on logic.

The Art of Pathos

Pathos is the emotions, in this case, the emotions of your presentation or speech. It is one of three bullwarks of necessity in speaking--whether conversationally or professionally. When you want someone to agree with you, you passionately express your point. If you want to leave someone in suspense, you dictate that through your own emotions and words. Pathos is a very powerful tool.

If you have no earthly idea what NaNoWriMo is, then let me explain. NaNoWriMo is the abbreviation for National Novel Writing Month. It occurs each November and the guidelines are simple and few: Write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. That seems like a lot, but really, if you set aside time to write about 1700 words per day, you will accomplish the goal, easily. Don't edit--save that for NaNoEdMo! Just sit down and write.

Now, think of it like this: When you go to a sporting event or a concert and you scream and yell and have fun--what happens to your voice in the morning? Is it clear, crisp, and rich in tone? Chances are, if it comes out at all, it's raspy, squeaky, and very painful to use and listen to. Why? Because you have abused your instrument and it will take some time to re-tune it. If you're a vocalist or speaker, overuse of your voice in this manner can result in vocal nodes which will give a permanent rasp to your voice and require delicate surgery to remove--and you'd better hope your surgeon has taken better care of his tools!

One of the greatest joys I get out of Toastmasters is being able to mentor other speakers. When I joined the organization in December of 2009, I didn't join to become a better speaker. In fact, I joined for a completely ridiculous reason: It would look great on a resume. My undergrad is in Secondary Education, Platform Arts (to be highly specific). Platform Arts is exactly what it sounds like--being on a stage. My degree encompassed acting, public speaking, and oral interpretation. More than that, it gave me the pedagogy for imparting that knowledge to others (I assure you, writing blog posts was not one of those ways--but, it is, after all, a tool for getting information out to the masses). So, when I delivered my first speech to my Toastmasters group, I simply blew them away because everything was already polished. WHen I learned more about the organization, specifically, that there was a leadership track as well, I jumped on that with voracious hunger.

Using the example of World of Warcraft(R), and the large team raids that go on, a Raid Leader must know what his team can do. He must know that he has everything covered--from healing to damage to aggro management. He must use strategic planning to make sure the raid comes off as a glorious success rather than a glorious team wipe. If he has more Warriors than Priests or Paladins--or has more Mages, for that matter--he either needs to have invested in a great many healing and mana potions, or be an incredible healer, himself.

We all know that speaking or singing is like having your instrument with you. Just as surgeons must care for their tools, and artists care for their brushes, so must the speaker care for his voice--and that care starts with proper breathing!
