Morgan Spurlock, the director behind Super Size Me, has turned his lens to the world's biggest geek gathering, the San Diego Comic-Con.

Interviewing such nerd icons as Kevin Smith, Joss Whedon, Eli Roth and Stan Lee, Spurlock attempts to dissect the cultural phenomenon that is SDCC. How so? By following a handful of attendees as they make their way through the convention center. Here's the synopsis for Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope:

Have you ever imagined a place where Vulcans and vampires get along? Where wizards and wookies can be themselves? Welcome to Comic-Con San Diego. What started as a fringe comic book convention for 500 fans has grown into the pop culture event of the year that influences every form of entertainment, now attended by over 140,000 strong. COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN'S HOPE- a film by Morgan Spurlock explores this amazing cultural phenomenon by following the lives of five attendees as they descend upon the ultimate geek mecca at San Diego Comic-Con 2010.

We'll be honest, we were very nervous about this documentary, fearing it may be another Big Bang Theory in documentary clothing, but so far it appears to be both honest and endearing. We're keeping our fingers crossed it stays that way. Oh, and in case you're wondering, that's footage from Comic-Con 2010. Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope will hit theaters [Updated with Date] on April 6th!

Forget SSDs, here comes ReRAM | PC Gamer

According to august engineering journal the EE Times, solid state storage specialist SanDisk is working on bringing a new form of system memory known as ‘ReRAM’ to market, a fact apparently revealed in a job ad posted on the company’s website last week.

Why is this interesting? Because ReRAM, or ‘resistive RAM’, is one of those disruptive technologies like wireless power or 4G that’s been under development for years, but is suddenly looking like it might happenin our lifetime. ReRAM could, if manufacturing kinks are worked out, replace both system RAM and hard drives in PCs of the future.

ReRAM is being touted as the successor to both current system memory chips and hard drives. And it’s not just SanDisk that’s been showing an interest in this super-storage of late.

The importance of ReRAM is that it combines the read/write speeds of DRAM – the stuff on those memory chips in your PC – with the non-volatile nature of flash memory. In other words, they don’t forget stuff when you turn the power off. Potentially, it’s the best of all existing technologies: bulk storage that runs at system memory speeds.

Theoretically, a PC with enough ReRAM memory in would mean no more loading times, ever. All your data would always be kept in the equivalent of today’s system RAM.

On top of that, ReRAM is expected to require little power, and it can be manufactured on tiny manufacturing processes with high yields.

The principle of the ‘memrister‘, upon which ReRAM is based, has been around for 40 years. Memristers work by ‘remembering’ the amount and polarity of current that passes through them as electrical resistance, which enables them to store data in ReRAM. HP believes that memristers have other potential uses as logic gates and switches that “could one day, for example, act like synapses inside computer circuits, mimicking the behavior of neurons in the human brain”.

Interest in memristers and ReRAM has spiked in the last few week, moving from highly specialised news feeds to mainstream tech sites including the BBC. Up until now, ReRAM has been most closely associated with HP which has led development of the technology. In January, however, Japanese firm Elpida which put out a press release that claimed it had a working ReRAM protoype that was capable of switching state at 10 nanoseconds – the same as DRAM.

Then, at the start of this month, ‘Technology Licensing Company’ Rambus – a well known player on the patent district circuit – announced it had acquired Unity Semiconductor for $35m. Unity’s CMOx technology is another candidate for the grand unification of memory theory, which includes patents that cover memristor interfaces too.

Other familiar names who are working to commericialise ReRAM include Sony, Panasonic, Micron, Hynix, DSI and more.

Expect a lot of news about ReRAM over the coming months. Hynix and Elpida both reckon they’ll have ReRAM-based chips in production some time next year.

iBooks DRM Has Been Hacked - The Digital Reader

Reports are coming in today that the latest version of Requiem, an app that removes Fairplay DRM from music and videos sold via iTunes, will now also remove the DRM from iBooks ebooks. It may have taken a couple years, but Apple is now as safe to buy from as any other ebookstore. You don’t have to worry about losing future access to content that you buy there.

Egy vásárosnaményi nyolcgyerekes cigány család lányaként 17 évesen fedezték fel a Magyar Rádióban. Több mint negyven évnyi éneklés után úgy érzi, mindent elért, amit énekesként el lehet. Elsősorban nem cigányokat szórakoztat, és szerinte őt nem is veszik egy kalap alá a többi romával, mert a művészeket elkülönítik. Interjúsorozatunkban nagyon ismert cigányok beszélnek, Molnár Ferenc Caramel volt az első, Lesi László, vagyis LL Junior a második, és most Bangó Margit a harmadik.

Először is köszönteném mindazokat, akikben a cím lekattintásakor megindult a vérkeringés, mindazonáltal van számukra egy rossz hírem. Ott az a zöldes derengés, arrafelé kellene távozni, köszönjük szépen. Innentől azt kell feltételeznem, hogy a maradók mindegyike nemcsak kedveli, de egyenesen odavan a magyar nyelv szépségeiért, különösen a hosszú... Megkérem a ballonkabátos urat, hogy legyen szíves kevésbé intenzív nyáladzással beilleszkedni a közönségbe, ha már cikinek találta a többiekkel kimenni! Na, szóval ékezetes betűkről lesz most szó.

Régóta frusztrált, hogy heti vagy havi rendszerességgel ömlenek be a feedolvasómba a legújabb ingyenes betűtípusokat összegyűjtő cikkek, az ott bemutatott fontok jelentős többsége azonban a kipróbálás során alkalmatlannak bizonyult arra, hogy magyar nyelvű szövegkörnyezetben használjam őket, mert hiányoztak belőlük a magyar ékezetes szimbólumok, különösképpen az ó, ő, ú és az ű. Egyesek szerint ezzel a hiányossággal együtt lehet élni, de aki látott már szép betűvel szedett szó közepén Times New Roman-ban feszítő Ő-t, az valószínűleg nem ért velük egyet.

Én sem.

A Fontsquirrel-hez meg a Google Web Fonts-hoz hasonló katalógusoldalakon van ugyan live preview, azaz egy saját tesztszöveggel ellenőrizhetjük, hogy a kinézett fonttal minden rendben van-e, a tapasztalat azt mutatja, hogy a közismert árvíztűrő tükörfúrógép teszten sok olyan betűkészlet is elvérzik, amely történetesen minden magyar ékezettel rendelkezik. (Emögött én azt sejtem, hogy a preview-nál csak egy kemény subsettingen átküldött fontot töltenek be, ami pont azokat a nyelvspecifikus szimbólumokat vágja le, amikre mi nagyon kíváncsiak lennénk. Napi magyartalan mondat penzum letudva.)

Úgyhogy elkezdtem listát vezetni azokról a betűkészletekről, amik megfelelnek a következő feltételeknek:

ingyenesen letölthetőek

a licencük szerint szabadon felhasználhatóak

jó minőségűek

biztosan megvan bennük minden magyar rövid és hosszú ékezetes karakter kisbetűs és nagybetűs alakban

Mostanra összegyűlt annyi, hogy legyen értelme közzétenni a listát, ezért készítettem neki egy külön oldalt Hazafias Népfont néven. Az ott látható 25 font — a régóta ismert webbiztosakkal kombinálva — már elég sok lehetőséget ad a dizájnolásra, de az igazi értelmét akkor nyerné el az oldal, ha mások, azaz ti is hozzátennétek a saját kedvenceiteket a gyűjteményhez, az ötleteitekkel, véleményetekkel pedig segítenétek jobbá tenni a projektet akár tartalmilag, akár szakmailag, akár külalakilag.

Köszönöm a figyelmet, ha nincsen kérdés, akkor a hátralévő öt percet kitöltjük egy vásárlási kötelezettség nélküli termékbemutatóval. Szeretne Ön otthonában, erőfeszítés nélkül fogy...

Ridiculous: A Loose Cable Caused Those 'Faster-Than-Light' Particles

We know that Einstein always has the last laugh, but this is hilarious: the faster-than-light particles that could have wrecked his relativity theory are no more. It was a mistake in the test results caused by a loose cable.

Didn't anyone from the Genius Bar tell them about the first rule of tech support? Check your cables first! Oh, scientists!

Researchers at CERN have found out that a bad fiber-optics link between a GPS unit and a computer was causing the 60 nanosecond timing discrepancy that was driving everyone mad. Once they realized this, the cable was tightened and the difference was gone. Yes, the faster-than-light neutrinos are not real (at least, we haven't detected them if they exist) and the Universe can breathe once again and keep destroying galactic wonders.

Apparently, the 60 nanosecond difference comes from the time it took to the data to travel through the cable, which fully accounts for the unexplainable 60 nanosecond neutrino speedup.

Amazon.com's many bots feud over book-prices - Boing Boing

Before I talk about my own troubles, let me tell you about another book, “Computer Game Bot Turing Test”. It's one of over 100,000 “books” “written” by a Markov chain running over random Wikipedia articles, bundled up and sold online for a ridiculous price. The publisher, Betascript, is notorious for this kind of thing.
It gets better. There are whole species of other bots that infest the Amazon Marketplace, pretending to have used copies of books, fighting epic price wars no one ever sees. So with “Turing Test” we have a delightful futuristic absurdity: a computer program, pretending to be human, hawking a book about computers pretending to be human, while other computer programs pretend to have used copies of it. A book that was never actually written, much less printed and read.
The internet has everything.

Ügyfél küld egy beszállítói cikktörzset a programozónak. A tábla hiányos, a programozó nekiáll gyomlálni. Egy hirtelen ötlettől vezérelve (=a tábla közel egyharmadában nincs adat) ráereszt a beszállító számlaszám mezőre egy GIRO számlaszám ellenőrző algoritmust. Nagy meglepetésre a számlaszámok kb. 10%-a hibás - valószínűleg elírta az operátor.

Magyarázza a fejlesztő az ügyfél amúgy IT lelkületű emberének, hogy talált egy csomó hibás számlaszámot (nota bene: ezekre a számlákra utal az ügyfél, amikor kifizeti a beszállítóit). IT lelkületű ember furán néz és kérdi, hogy honnan tudja a programozó, hogy azok a számlaszámok hibásak.

Programozó szeret magyarázni, elmeséli, hogy a GIRO számlaszám 3 darab nyolcas blokkjában a 8. karakter egy checksum, ami pont azért van, hogy az ilyen véletlenszerű elírásokat tetten lehessen érni.

Minderre IT lelkű emberünk visszakérdez: na de ha ezt a 8. számot ki tudja számolni a programozó, akkor hol itt a hiba? Ki kell számolni a meglevő hétből újra és máris jók a számlaszámok!

Természetesen történetünk csupa fikció, a valósághoz a lehető legkisebb köze sincsen.

Rooted Nook Simple Touch shows off 'no refresh' E Ink | The Verge

We've seen a rooted Sony PRS-T1 e-reader defeat the black-to-white refresh flash that's common on E Ink displays, and now there's a similar hack for the Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch. Unlike the Sony, the Nook hack requires a rooted device as well as some extra code. Thankfully, this has been provided by xda-developers forum user marspeople. After installing, it takes a simple four-tap gesture to turn on the "no refresh" mode and your Nook becomes a smooth-scrolling, monochrome Android tablet — sort of.

While the hack offers a huge improvement in screen refresh rate, it does stutter significantly in a few spots and it's nowhere near as smooth as a full-fledged tablet. Compared to the PRS-T1, the Nook appears to keep text sharper in its no refresh mode, though it lacks the ability to use text-to-speech like the Sony. If current E Ink displays can be hacked to refresh this quickly, here's hoping the next generation performs like this out of the box.

Apple's latest sandboxing deadline delay signals moving goalposts for devs

Unfortunately, the changes now present several new conundrums for developers. Many apps have to be significantly re-architected to work within sandboxing limits. That's a lot of work for a relatively low security benefit, argued Red Sweater's Daniel Jalkut.

For instance, apps targeting OS X 10.7.3 for its expanded sandbox entitlements will still run on Snow Leopard (10.6) or even earlier versions of Lion. Under Snow Leopard, apps simply run without sandboxing altogether. However, under 10.7.0 to 10.7.2, certain functionality that requires entitlements introduced in 10.7.3 simply won't work—the system won't be able to grant the necessary entitlements.

Developers are considering how to handle those edge cases. Should the app try to work around the limits, or should an app just alert the user that it won't work unless Lion is updated? Or should Apple develop a better way to handle the entitlements regardless of OS version?
