Ramai pelawat yang datang sekadar singgah, daftar, tengok anak gajah dan pulang atau sambung lawatan ke Deerland. Berikut adalah senarai aktiviti yang boleh diikuti oleh para pangunjung:

1. Pemerhatian anak gajah di habitat semulajadi; Anak-anak gajah akan dibiarkan bebas berkeliaran beberapa jam di hutan berhampiran setiap hari bagi membiasakan mereka dengan habitat asal. Pelawat boleh melihat keletah mereka bermain dan bersosial diantara satu sama lain.

2. Pemerhatian "latihan rutin" gajah dewasa; Setiap hari gajah-gajah dewasa akan dibawa berjalan ke hutan berhampiran oleh mahut bagi memastikan mereka membiasakan mereka dengan habitat asal. Latihan ini juga penting bagi memastikan kesihatan dan kecergasan mereka sentiasa berada ditahap maksima.

3. Memerhati gajah dewasa mandi bersama mahut; Selepas menjalani latihan harian, gajah-gajah dewasa akan dimandikan bagi membuang kotoran, daki dan sel mati pada kulit mereka. Aktiviti mencuci dan memberus badan gajah juga dapat melancarkan perjalanan aliran dara dalam tubuh gajah. Ia juga dapat mengeratkan lagi hubungan antara gajah dan mahut yang menjaga mereka.

4. Program pendidikan biodiversiti, memberi makan dan bergambar bersama gajah

5. Menyusuri trail di Hutan Simpan Krau; Pelawat yang memasuki trail mungkin berpeluang melihat gajah dewasa yang sedang dibawa oleh mahut untuk aktiviti latihan rutin mereka.

6. Pendidikan konservasi melalui pameran; pelawat boleh mempelajari banyak perkara melalui gambar-gambar, banner, poster dan arca di ruang pameran yang disediakan berhampiran kaunter pendaftaran.

7. Menonton video proses pemindahan gajah; Video ini difilemkan dengan kerjasama krew National Geographic, penonton diberikan maklumat berkaitan konflik antara gajah dan manusia serta tindakan Jabatan Perhilitan dalam menangani masalah tersebut.

8. Penerangan interpretasi; kebolehan semulajadi, sifat, tingkah laku, kepentingan gajah, penyelesaian masalah gajah - manusia dan banyak lagi.

9. Mandi bersama anak gajah (sehingga 30/6/2013 bergantung kepada keadaan air sungai dan keselamatan pelawat serta gajah);

Aktiviti yang ditawarkan oleh Pemandu Pelancong Tempatan

Bersesuaian dengan salah satu konsep ekopelancongan iaitu, mendatangkan manfaat dan pulangan kepada penduduk setempat, Jabatan Perhilitan telah mengadakan Kursus Pemandu Pelancong Alam Semulajadi yang mendapat lesen dari Kementerian Pelancongan untuk beroperasi di Pusat Konservasi Gajah Kebangsaan (PKGK). Berbekalkan pengetahuan yang diberikan semasa kursus, mulai dari bulan Mac tahun 2012, pemandu pelancong tampatan (Local Tourist Guide) telah menjalankan aktiviti-aktiviti yang berkaitan di sini.

Perkhidmatan pemandu pelancong bersesuian dangan pemintaan pelawat yang inginkan lebih layanan, bantuan dan maklumat semasa lawatan ke sini. Ia juga penting untuk dalam soal keselamatan pelawat, dimana sebagai contoh, aktiviti mandi bersama anak gajah hanya dibenarkan kepada pelawat yang mengambil pemandu pelancong tempatan bersesuaian dengan SOP (Prosedur Standard Operasi) yang telah ditetapkan oleh pihak pengurusan PKGK.

Antara aktiviti yang boleh dijalankan bersama pemandu pelancong alam semulajadi tempatan adalah:-

1. Menyusuri denai gajah sejauh 1.5km.
Pelawat dibawa ke dalam kawasan Hutan Simpan Krau sambil diberikan penerangan mengenai flora dan fauna yang terdapat di hutan hujan tropika. Pelawat akan juga melihat kehidupan gajah dan anak gajah yang menjalani latihan dan senaman harian mereka di sini.

2. Mengikuti program lawatan harian
Aturcara program lawatan harian bermula dari jam 1.00 petang (menonton video proses menangkap dan memindahkan gajah dari kawasan bermasalah ke habitat baru. Video selama 30 minit ini dibuat dengan kejasama staf National Geographic), 2.00 petang (Memerhati gajah dewasa dimandikan, mengikuti penerangan dan persembahan kebolehan gajah, memberi makan gajah dewasa dan bergambar)

3. Mandi bersama anak gajah (sehingga 30 Jun 2013 sahaja)
Bagi mereka yang telah mendapatkan khidmat pemandu pelancong tempatan, dan sekiranya keadaan air sungai tidak membahayakan pelawat dan anak gajah, pelawat boleh mengikuti acara ini.

4. Melawat perkampungan Orang Asli Kaum Che Wong
Antara 18 suku kaum orang asli di Semenanjung Malaysia, kaum Che Wong adalah suku kaum orang asli yang mempunyai populasi paling rendah iaitu sekitar 400 orang sahaja. Kebanyakkan mereka tinggal di Hutan Simpan Krau. Bagaimanapun, kerajaan telah menyediakan kawasan perumahan berkelompok untuk mereka tinggal berhampiran PKGK. Pelawat akan dibawa melawat perkampungan dan dewan pameran kaum ini, mencuba buluh sumpitan dan sekiranya tempahan awal dibuat, boleh menyaksikan tarian sewang.

Kenapa Aktiviti Menunggang Gajah dihentikan?

1. Mengembalikan dan menguatkan matlamat dan fungsi asal Pusat ini sebagai Pusat Konservasi Gajah, bukan sebagai taman tema atau hiburan berasaskan gajah.
2. Menitikberatkan keselamatan pelawat dan pekerja serta kebajikan gajah.
3. Mencegah menularnya penyakit kepada dan daripada gajah.
4. Mengelakkan gajah melakukan perbuatan yang diluar kebiasaan mereka semasa hidup liar di hutan dan mengelakkan penyalahgunaan gajah untuk mendapatkan keuntungan.

Ini bersesuaian dengan peranan dan nama pusat KONSERVASI ini sendiri serta penguatkuasaan Akta Nombor 716 Tahun 2010. Keselamatan pengunjung dan kakitangan serta kebajikan gajah menjadi keutamaan dan intipati dalam pembatalan aktiviti tersebut.

1. Mengapa tunggangan gajah dihadkan/Kenapa pelekat kuning dihadkan/Kenapa hanya sedikit pelekat kuning dikeluarkan? NOTA: TIADA LAGI AKTIVITI MENUNGGANG GAJAH MULAI 4/10/2012 DI PKGK.

Pelawat yang mengikuti acara menunggang gajah dihadkan bagi mengelakkan gajah mengalami tekanan yang keterlaluan. Secara semulajadi, gajah adalah mamalia yang aktif pada waktu malam dan berehat pada waktu tengahari. Aktiviti menunggang gajah ini hanyalah sebahagian daripada latihan rutin mereka bagi membiasakan diri dengan orang ramai dan tekanan sebagai persediaan untuk menjadi gajah denak.

2. Mengapa tiada aktiviti mandi bersama anak gajah pada hari ini?

Aktiviti ini bergantung kepada keadaan paras air sungai Teris, sekiranya air naik dan deras disebabkan oleh hujan di sebelah hulu sungai, ia akan membahayakan anak gajah dan pelawat yang mengikuti aktiviti ini. NOTA: BAGI MENGIKUTI AKTIVITI MEMANDIKAN ANAK GAJAH; BAYARAN KEPADA PERSATUAN PEMANDU PELANCONG TEMPATAN ADALAH DIWAJIBKAN BAGI MEMBANTU PELAWAT MENGIKUTI AKTIVITI INI.

3. Kenapa pelawat perlu mendaftar?

Pelawat diwajibkan mendaftar dengan mengisi serta menandatangani borang Akuan Pelepasan bagi memasuki pusat ini kerana ianya adalah salah satu prosedur pusat selain tujuan utama adalah untuk pengumpulan data kedatangan pelawat.

4. Bagaimana hendak ke PKGK sekiranya daripada Kuala Lumpur?

Laluan utama ke PKGK adalah melalui Lebuh Raya Pantai Timur, keluar melalui exit Lanchang (kira-kira 12km), belok ke kanan dan pandu terus ke PKGK (Rujuk pelan lakaran di website).

5. Adakah terdapat pengangkutan awam daripada Kuala Lumpur ke PKGK?

Sekiranya anda ingin menaiki pengangkutan awam ke PKGK, anda bolehlah menggunakan perkhidmatan bas dari Terminal Bas Pekeliling atau teksi. Perkhidmatan bas dari hentian Pekeliling ke Mentakab minta pemandu bas berhenti di Lanchang. Bas berlepas dari Terminal Bas/Hentian Bas Pekeliling setiap satu jam (7.00am 8.00am 9.00am 10.00am 11.00am 12.00nn 1.00pm 2.00pm 3.00pm 4.00pm 5.00pm 6.00pm) setiap hari. Ambil teksi dari hentian bas Lanchang ke PKGK dengan bayaran sekitar RM30/teksi. Pastikan menaiki bas awal kerana aktiviti gajah dewasa bermula pada jam 10.30 pagi dan 2.00 petang.

Daripada tahun 1974 hingga pertengahan tahun 2012, lebih 700 ekor gajah telah dipindahkan ke habitat barunya di Taman Negara Pahang dan Terengganu.

11. Kenapa tidak diadakan pertunjukkan gajah seperti melukis, menari dan sebagainya?

Aktiviti tersebut berlawanan dengan objektif penubuhan pusat ini sebagai sebuah pusat konservasi.

12. Apakah aktiviti yang dijalankan di sini?

Aktiviti yang dapat anda lakukan di pusat ini adalah seperti memerhatikan tingkah laku gajah, bergambar, menunggang gajah, memberi makan dan mandi bersama anak gajah.

13. Berapa ekor gajah yang ada/Kenapa sedikit sahaja gajah yang dilihat?

Jumlah gajah yang terdapat di sini berubah dari masa kesemasa, secara purata, terdapat 25-30 ekor gajah yang berlainan umur dalam satu-satu masa. Gajah-gajah ini ditempatkan di kawasan yang berlainan dan ada yang berada di luar kawasan bagi menjalani latihan dan operasi pemindahan gajah liar.

14. Bagaimana cara untuk mendapatkan pelekat kuning?

Pemberian pelekat kuning untuk mengikuti aktiviti menunggang gajah diberikan berdasarkan konsep “first come first serve basis”, tempahan awal juga dihadkan bagi memberikan peluang samarata kepada setiap pengunjung.

15. Berapakah bayaran yang dikenakan untuk memasuki pusat ini atau menunggang gajah?

Pusat ini tidak mengenakan sebarang bayaran kepada pengunjung yang memasuki atau yang ingin menunggang gajah, walaubagaimanapun derma ikhlas kepada Tabung Amanah Gajah adalah digalakkan.

16. Bagaimanakah caranya untuk menderma kepada pusat ini dan apakah yang boleh didermakan selain wang ringgit?

Sumbangan derma boleh dibuat melalui wang ringgit atau cek atas nama Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Perhilitan kepada pusat ini. Selain daripada wang ringgit, pihak pusat juga menggalakkan pengunjung membawa buah-buahan seperti pisang, tebu atau keledek untuk diberikan kepada gajah.

17. Kenapa waktu aktiviti bermula lambat pada jam 2.00 petang?

Bagi memberi peluang kepada mereka yang berada jauh seperti dari Kuala Lumpur dan Kuantan bersama mengikuti aktiviti yang disediakan.

18. Mengapa perlu mendaftar untuk lawatan?

Pendaftaran diwajibkan bagi mengenalpasti jumlah kedatangan pelancong, menanda-tangani borang Pelepasan Tanggung Jawab dan seterusnya data digunakan bagi mendapatkan bajet untuk membiayai operasi pusat ini.

19. Kenapakah terdapat perbezaan warna pelekat yang dikeluarkan?

Terdapat tiga jenis pelekat yang dikeluarkan oleh pusat iaitu; Warna hijau (pas lawatan pelawat rasmi jabatan), warna merah (pas lawatan tanpa menunggang gajah) dan warna kuning (pas lawatan dan dibenarkan untuk menunggang gajah).

20. Apakah makanan utama gajah di pusat konservasi ini?

Gajah adalah haiwan herbivor, di pusat ini makan utama yang diberikan adalah rumput napier, batang dan daun pisang serta buah-buahan.Selain itu, dedak atau palet juga dibekalkan kepada gajah-gajah sebagai makanan tambahan untuk diet seimbang.

21. Boleh berkelah di kawasan sekitar pusat ini?

Perkelahan tidak digalakkan untuk membendung pembuangan sampah sarap.

22. Kenapa makanan tidak dibenarkan untuk dibawa masuk ke kawasan aktiviti?

Bagi mengelakkan jangkitan kuman, pembuangan sampah dan sisa makanan yang akan mengundang penyebaran penyakit.

23. Di manakah gajah ditempatkan selepas aktiviti bersama pelawat?

Gajah-gajah disini ditempatkan di perumahan gajah di kawasan hutan berhampiran.

24. Kenapa tidak dikenakan bayaran masuk?

Tiada bayaran dikenakan bagi memberi peluang kepada semua golongan untuk mengenali dan mengetahui peranan dan kepentingan gajah kepada alam sekitar.

25. Kenapa gajah tidak dilepaskan terus ke dalam hutan dan berapa lamakah ianya akan ditempatkan di pusat ini?

Gajah yang dibawa ke pusat ini kebanyakannya mengalami masalah kesihatan dan tertinggal daripada kumpulan mereka. Oleh itu, ianya perlu dikuarantin, dirawat dan terdapat juga yang perlu dilatih bagi membantu proses tangkap pindah gajah pada masa hadapan. Gajah yang ditempatkan di pusat ini bergantung kepada pelbagai faktor seperti tahap kesihatan, usia dan sebagainya.

26. Adakah gajah-gajah ini gembira tinggal di sini?

Bergantung kepada gajah secara individu, secara amnya mereka tidak mengalami tekanan yang keterlaluan kerana mendapat tempat penginapan, kesihatan dijaga, makanan yang cukup serta tidak digunakan untuk bekerja bagi mendapatkan pulangan wang.

27. Kenapakah anak gajah berada di dalam kurungan?

Anak gajah berada di dalam kurungan hanya semasa waktu lawatan bagi memudahkan pelancong melihat, bermesra dan memberi makan kepada mereka. Anak-anak gajah disini mempunyai jadual latihan harian dan dibawa keluar pada waktu-waktu tertentu untuk aktiviti sosial mereka.

28. Kenapakah aktiviti mandi bersama gajah dewasa telah dihentikan?

Penutupan aktiviti mandi bersama gajah dewasa adalah bagi mengurangkan risiko kemalangan kepada gajah dan pelawat, juga untuk menjaga kebajikan gajah..

29. Kenapa perlu diisikan nombor Kad Pengenalan dalam borang pendaftaran?

Sebagai pengesahan dan melibatkan proses undang-undang.

30. Kenapa perlu buat tempahan untuk menunggang gajah? NOTA: TIADA LAGI AKTIVITI MENUNGGANG GAJAH MULAI 4/10/2012 DI PKGK.

Tempahan dibuat bagi mereka yang ingin menyertai aktiviti menunggang, walaubagaimanapun, tiada jaminan bagi mereka yang membuat tempahan akan dapat mengikuti aktiviti tersebut memandangkan had tempahan adalah kepada 40 orang sahaja dalam satu-satu masa.

31. Kenapa aktivti tidak dibuat pada waktu pagi?

Aktiviti pada sebelah pagi hanya dibuka kepada tempahan rombongan pelawat yang melebihi 40 orang sahaja, setiap hari kecuali pada hari jumaat.

32. Pukul berapakah tayangan video mengenai tangkapan gajah ditayangkan?

Tayangan video mengenai operasi tangkap pindah gajah ditayangkan pada waktu-waktu berikut;

a. Isnin hingga Khamis: 1.00pm & 1.30 pm

b. Jumaat: 1.00pm, 1.30pm & 2.00pm

c. Sabtu, Ahad & Kelepasan Am : 12.30pm, 1.00pm &1.30pm

33. Kenapa hanya pelawat dari luar negara sahaja yang dapat menunggang gajah? NOTA: TIADA LAGI AKTIVITI MENUNGGANG GAJAH MULAI 4/10/2012 DI PKGK.

Kebanyakan pelawat luar Negara datang ke pusat ini melalui agensi pelancongan dan tempahan awal telah dilakukan oleh agensi tersebut. Manakala, bagi yang tidak berkesempatan membuat tempahan, mereka telah datang seawal jam 9.00 pagi bagi mendapatkan pelekat kuning.

34. Kenapa mandi bersama anak gajah tidak dibuat pada waktu pagi?

Aktiviti mandi bersama anak-anak gajah tidak dijalankan pada waktu pagi kerana mereka mempunyai rutin latihan harian yang lain.

35. Adakah pusat ini dibuka setiap hari kepada pelawat?

Ya, sepanjang tahun kecuali ditutup untuk lawatan pada hari Raya Pertama sahaja.

36. Tidakkah gajah penat membawa pelawat setiap hari? NOTA: TIADA LAGI AKTIVITI MENUNGGANG GAJAH MULAI 4/10/2012 DI PKGK.

Aktiviti menunggang gajah dihadkan kepada 100 orang sehari bagi menggelakkan gajah mengalami tekanan dan gajah untuk aktivit bersama pelawat juga digilirkan.

37. Kenapa ditayangkan video yang sama sahaja?

Kos yang sangat tinggi untuk membuat video baru dan Jabatan dalam perancangan bagi membuat video baru.

38. Adakah terdapat penginapan di Pusat Konservasi Gajah Kebangsaan, sekiranya saya ingin bermalam?

Tiada penginapan disediakan di Pusat Konservasi Gajah Kebangsaan. Walaubagaimanapun, terdapat beberapa buah rumah homestay yang dikendalikan oleh penduduk tempatan berhampiran pusat ini. Berikut merupakan senarai penginapan beserta nombor yang boleh dihubungi untuk sebarang pertanyaan:

Asian Elephants

Asian elephants are sometimes known as Indian elephants. They are one of the three living species of elephant. Asian elephants are found mostly in India, Indochina, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants and Asian elephants also have smaller ears. This is one of the best ways to tell Asian elephants apart from African elephants. The height of an Asian elephant ranges from 7-12 feet and they weigh approximately 3.25 to 5.5 tons. There are other physical characteristics that separate Asian elephants from their African counterparts. They have a more arched back and also have more nails on the feet. While both male and female African elephants have tusks, female Asian elephants usually do not have these tusks. Females that do have tusks often have tusks that are small and hard to see.

Behavior of Asian Elephants

Elephants travel in migratory routes that are seasonal in nature. These routes often take the Asian elephants through wet and dry zones. The oldest member of the herd is the elephant charged with remembering where the routes lead. Asian elephants live for about 60 years when they are in the wild and 80 years when they are in zoos and other captive environments. The females live in small groups that are led by the oldest female in the group. The herd that elephants travel in consists of relative elephants. Male elephants are called bull elephants. They like to travel alone and often become involved in conflicts over female elephants during the mating season.

Domestic Use of Asian Elephants

Asian elephants have been domesticated for many purposes. In Southern and Southeast Asia, elephants have been used for forestry purposes because their tusks and large size make it easy for them to knock down small trees and brush. Asian elephants have also been used during ceremonies for many centuries. Danger of Asian Elephants

Because of their size, Asian elephants are rather dangerous. They have tusks and large bodies that can be used to destroy property and cause harm to humans and other animals. Adult males are particularly aggressive because of the surge in testosterone they experience after they go through puberty. Subspecies of Asian Elephants

There are four subspecies of Asian elephants. The Indian elephant (E. m. indicus) lives in southern India, northwest India, and the foothills of the Himalayans. Why is the Asian Elephant Endangered?

The greatest threat to the Asian elephant's survival is encroachment of its natural habitat by man. Deforestation and farming are clearing away their food source, causing many of these magnificent animals to die of starvation. A further reason why this magnificent animal is endangered is due to the fact that they are being hunted for their ivory tusks. This practice is illegal, yet poachers still earn vast sums of money for the elephant's tusks.

Elephants can weigh up to 5.5 tons and stand at a height of 3 metres, yet for all their bulk and strength they are still extremely fragile. They can be found everywhere from evergreen forests to dry scrubland and can spend up to 20 hours a day feeding. An adult Asian elephant can consume up to 200 kg's of food daily, ranging from fruits to berries and shrubs, leaves and bark.

Pollution of the environment in which Asian elephants live is also having a negative impact upon these animals. Today there are less than 50,000 to be found in the wild and that wild is slowly disappearing as vegetation is cleared away to make way for progress. Ironically elephants are used to clear large tracts of lands.

A battle for resources has led to tragic conflicts between Asian elephants and humans, resulting in the deaths of many elephants who are reported as 'rogue'. Unfortunately aggressive behaviour from elephants can cause vast devastation and even the deaths of humans, so an aggressive elephant is quickly killed. Approximately 15,000 Asian elephants are kept in captivity, many under questionable circumstances. They are currently listed on the endangered species list and will continue to be so until conservation efforts are put in place to preserve what is left of their natural habitat.

Being mammals themselves, humans tend to have more passion and concern for other mammals, especially the ones that are endangered. Firstly, what mostly differs mammals from other animals is the existence of vertebrates in their anatomy, and the fact that the females produce milk to feed the young, among other things. IUCN says that there are about 1100 endangered or threatened mammal species, which makes roughly 20% of all mammals. That said, lets look at one of the most endangered species of them on our planet.

There are two types of elephants, the main difference being the size, the African, which is bigger, and the Asian. The African, of course, comes from Africa, and lives in all kinds of habitats, from dense forests, savannahs, through marshes, semidesserts, to grasslands and desserts. It feeds on a variety of plants, like grass, or leafs and twigs from trees, fruits when available. They show remarkable intelligence when feeding sometimes, knocking down trees to reach the to higher edible parts, or digging in search of roots or underground water. Due to this healthy digestion, they live up to 60 years old in the wild, and even 80 in captivity. Their age can be determined by the length of time their grinding teeth last. Without them, the elephant can't chew his food, and will die.

The reduction in the African elephants population is because of three different factors:
1) the killing of elephants for their tusks(ivory), which is a highly valuable resource. This is the most influential factor on the decrease of their population.
2)desertification, a major cause of the disappearance of not only elephants, but many other species as well.
3) The most recent factor, which has not been always around, the conflict between humans and elephants for land. This is due to the massive growth of human population. Of course, there are many other reasons, like the availability of weapons, the apathy towards elephants because they sometimes destroy crops, untrained wildlife authorities and many more, but those three are the major ones.

The Asian elephants are smaller then their relatives in Africa. They live in higher areas and altitudes, like hills and mountains, even to 3600 m high, in habitats like thick jungles or plains with grass. It can be found in places like the Himalayas, mountains of China, Sri Lanka, Indo-Burma, India and Indo-china. What is specific for these elephants is that the males begin to live a solitary life when they reach their sexual maturity, which is at about the age of 10-17 years. This is probably because they are still to young or weak to contribute to the reproduction and attracting older females, which achieve their sexual maturity at the age of 9-12 years. The females always live in family groups that consist of mother, daughters, sisters and immature males, which usually has about 30-50 members, although there can be found groups with even 100. They feed on grasses, branches, bark, flowers, fruits, and they even dig for roots such as bamboo.

Due to the technological advances in the 19th century, which were not likely here, but came from abroad, the population of the Asian elephants severely dropped. Their feeding grounds were destroyed or taken by humans, which is the biggest problem for the population. They were also killed because they destroyed crops, and for their tusks. The females do not have any tusks, so they were not killed for this reason, but extreme male hunting sometimes lead to a disturbed and problematic female:male elephant ratio.

Weight & Height

The Asian elephant is the smaller of the two elephants, weighing in at 3.25 to 5.5 tons. Domestic Use

There is a big difference in how African and Asian elephants have been used for domestic purposes. Asian elephants have been used for domestic purposes for many centuries. The people of Asia often use elephants as ceremonial animals and may ride these elephants during special ceremonies. Some Asian elephants have been used as working elephants for help with milling and other industrial activities. The Plight of the Asian Elephants

Elephants and man have lived and worked alongside each other for centuries but this relationship is now in a state of flux. In particular, the Asian Elephant is now considered to be an endangered species. The impact is visible in Laos, once known as the 'Land of a Million Elephants', is now home to little over a thousand Elephants. According to the organization Elephant Family 'in another 30 years they could just vanish all together'.

How and why did this happen? There are a number of reasons:-

Loss of habitat is one reason. As civilization and industries expand, the Elephants natural jungle and forest homes have been shrinking at a rapid rate. In the fight for the land there have been injuries on both sides. The end result is that the Elephant herds, in some areas, have their pathway to food and water sources cut off. In some cases Elephants can be cut off from their herds. Neither result is a positive one for the Elephants.

Lack of breeding is another. As Elephants are worked to near exhaustion there is little time or inclination for them to breed and this is obviously directly impacting the number of Elephants. In addition the gestation and rearing of the baby calf can take between four to five years, having a 'worker' out of action for this length of time is not affordable to most farmers. With little breeding the number of Elephants will continue to dwindle and extinction would seem to be a likely outcome if not addressed.

We know the problem but what is being done to address this issue?

In Laos, an organization called the 'Elephant Conservation Center' has been established to address the breeding issue. At the Elephant Conservation Center pregnant Elephants return home to an idyllic jungle setting where they can be cared for. The gestation period for an Elephant is 22 months, so to encourage the farmers to rest their Elephants, the farmer is lent a hand tractor to do the work of the Elephant.

Following the birth the mother cares for the calf for up to three years. Both mother and calf are able to stay at the Conservation Center for another two years to assist to maintain the good health of both the mother and calf. The Elephants handler, or mahout, lives at the Elephant Conservation Center with the Elephants and are paid a salary for up to four years.

The Center is not only offering a breeding program for the Lao Elephant but it is also encouraging the farmers to rest their elephants, which also helps with breeding. This is a great step forward in resolving the plight of the Asian Elephant.

The Asian elephant is one of three recognized extant species of the family elephantidae; the other two are the African forest elephant and the African bush elephant. This hullking animal once patrolled vast stretches of Asia in abundance, but today is an endangered species confined to a few select regions of South and Southeast Asia. It is estimated that there are only between 25,600 and 32,750 individuals remaining in the wild. The Asian elephant has also become prominent as a domestic creature, assisting in industry as a beast of burden and also fulfilling tourist and traditional roles. In military history, the Asian elephant has been a presence upon a many battlefields, used for combat from the days of Ancient India through the era of Alexander the Great and into the days of the Moguls.

Physical Description:

Asian elephants are generally smaller than their African bush counterparts. Asian elephants differ from their African cousins with their smaller ears and different cranial structure. Also, while both male and female African elephants have long tusks, only the male Asian elephant has visible tusks; the female Asian elephant's tusks are so short they are pratically not visible. There are four currently recognized subspecies of Asian elephant: the Indian elephant (E. m. indicus), the Sri Lanka elephant (E. m. maximus), the Sumatran elephant (E. m. sumatrensis), and the newly classified Borneo elephant (E. m. borneensis). Of the four subspecies, the smallest is the Borneo elephant, also known as the Borneo pygmy elephant (which also bears the recognition of being the tamest of the four as well). The largest is the Sri Lankan elephant, closely followed by the Indian elephant. Although both races can reach heights of a bit over 11 feet, the Sri Lankan elephant has a heavier weight of up to 12,000 lbs.

Diet:

Elephants are voracious eaters, consuming about 10% of their body weight in food each day. It also requires 80 - 200 liters of water daily as well. It feeds on a wide array of vegetation, preferring grasses but also eating leaves, roots, banks, and vines.

Habitat:

Elephants primarily occur in scrub forests, but are also found along forest edges where more open and grassy areas are available. They range from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh to Sri Lanka and throughout portions of Indochina. It is also found in parts of Indonesia.

Reproduction:

Females are capable of giving birth about every 4 - 6 years, and can birth about 7 calves per lifetime. Gestation lasts for approximately 19 - 22 months. Mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and aunts all help in raising the young.

Helping elephants takes a lot of hard work by volunteers all over the world. While some volunteers work directly with the elephants at shelters and orphanages, there are also people all over the world who are raising money to keep these shelters going and working to make sure as many elephants can be helped as possible. Elephant orphanages have opened in Sri Lanka and other areas so that Asian elephants can be helped as much as possible. These orphanages are staffed by volunteers who work directly with the elephants. The elephants are kept in pens, so these pens must be cleaned each day. This means removing the elephant dung on a daily basis. These volunteers also bathe orphaned elephant calves, feed the elephants, and care for their injuries. As the elephants get stronger, they may be able to go back into the wild and try to survive on their own.

How Are We Helping Asian Elephants?

The Asian elephant is a magnificent animal, one, which has special significance for people all over the world. Weighing up to 5 tonnes and standing at a height of up to 3 metres they are the largest land animals in Asia with very few natural predators.

However due to a combination of pollution, encroachment and habitat destruction resulting from human activity, Conservationists believe there are now less than 30,000 Asian elephants left in the wild. Therefore this majestic animal which once roamed right across Asia finds itself on the endangered species list, meaning it faces the threat of extinction in the near future.

The Conservation Effort

The main focus of the conservation effort is on the elephants' habitat. Over recent years intensive logging and farming have resulted in huge swathes of forest leaving less than 15% of the original area. Ironically in some parts of Asia it is the elephants themselves that are used (by humans) to pull the huge logs out of the forest to be transported away.

Conservation charities have been working hard with local communities to halt the devastation. For example in Thailand, the superstitions of the Buddhist communities have been utilised as a way of saving the elephants of Chiang Mai province. By tying brightly coloured Buddhist cloth around trees, they are saved from being cut down because people believe that bad luck would result. This seemingly small program has proved extremely effective despite only being introduced a few years ago.

Green Shoots

As well as preventing trees from being cut down, conservationists have been planting new hard wood trees. These fast growing trees will help replenish the rainforest quicker so that Thailand's elephants can once again enjoy a larger area. Plans are also being developed to take similar programs across Asia to give back the natural environment.

Utilising Modern Technology

Modern technology such as chainsaws, heavy land moving equipment etc is largely responsible for the devastation to the rainforests but through the use of other modern technology conservationists hope to get ahead in their efforts to save the Asian elephant.

GPS trackers allow scientists and researcher to follow herds of wild elephants through the forests so they can gain a better understanding of their movements. Computer generated land models can be used to identify areas where the elephants could live and develop so their numbers are allowed to grow once more.

The Two Species of Elephants & Their Differences

The two species of elephants are the Asian and the African elephants. There are distinctive differences between the two, which are highlighted below:

The African elephant is termed scientifically as Loxodonta africana and weighs between 4,000 and 7,000 kilograms. At shoulder height, the elephant can stand anywhere between 3 and 4 metres tall. Its skin has a more wrinkled appearance than that of the Asian elephant. It also has 21 pairs of ribs and its highest point is at the shoulder. The African elephant is easily recognised by its ears, which fan out in a distinctive shape over its shoulders and neck.

The shape of the African elephant's back is concave and the shape of its belly runs diagonally downwards towards its hind legs. The shape of its head is flattened on top, not crumpled and shows no visible humps or dents. The profile of the African elephant's molars are diamond shaped and the tusks are prevalent in both sexes, but larger in the males. The lower lip is short and round, the trunk more ringed and softer, and the trunk end has two fingers.

The Asian elephant weighs between 3,000 and 6,000kg and stands at a height of 2 - 3.5 metres. It has 20 pairs of ribs and has its highest point on the back, which is usually convex or straight. Its ears are much smaller than the African variety and the belly is either straight or sags slightly in the middle.

The head has a more crumpled appearance with a dent in the middle of the scull. The lower lip is long and tapered and the trunk has less rings and is harder, ending in one finger instead of two like African elephants. An interesting fact is that the two species cannot be interbred because of their vast genetic differences.

The elephant is the largest land animal on Earth. An elephant can carry a load of 1,200 pounds and they eat 300 pounds of food a day. Elephants can live up to 70 years or more. Elephants are incredibly social creatures with lasting memories, and they can communicate over long distances through low range sound waves that are inaudible to humans.

There are two types of elephants, the African elephant and the Indian elephant (a.k.a. Asian elephant). African elephants can be identified by their larger ears. The African elephant grows up to 10 feet tall and weighs as much as 12,000 pounds. An elephant calf is usually born into an extended family, which includes a cohesive group of females and their young. These families are headed by an older female elephant who serves as matriarch. At 14 years of age, adult male elephants, or bulls, leave the herd rejoining females only at breeding times. The bulls either range alone or join other bull elephants in "bachelor herds".

It is the mother elephant's responsibility to provide a 250-pound newborn with milk; but, the whole herd pitches in when it comes to caretaking and protecting baby elephants from predators. The mother elephant receives help from aunts, sisters, and cousins who serve as nannies and are learning how to care for babies. Teaching a potential mother how to rear her calf is an important task, since the calves' survival depends on it.
