Located next to the landmark Royal Town Kuala Kangsar, Ubudiah Mosque, Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery was once called Upper Castle. The castle is also known as the Palace City and is located at Bukit Chandan. This building is the first concrete castle built in the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan. The palace was originally owned by the deceased Murshidul Azam Sultan Idris Shah, Sultan of Perak to 28 (1887-1916). Hulu began palace built in 1889 and completed in 1903.

Made before the gallery, the building became the school for educational purposes locals in the 1970s. Today, two-storey building is divided into several sections according to events and life experiences that passed by Sultan Azlan Shah who became the government for the people and government of Perak while this. It officially opened on December 9, 2003 and became one of the attraction in the city with the famous enterprises Sayong this pumpkin.

SMK Clifford, Kuala Kangsar

SMK Clifford, Kuala Kangsar is derived from the Malay schools in the rest of the month in December 1897. In 1897 appeared "the English School" and also known as "Hogan School" after the first large extent teachers, Mr James Percival Charles Hogan. Students began with a total of 40 people register students in the early establishment and the 494 people in 1928. Until 1905, school record became the first mixed school in Perak have girls. In terms of teaching staff, starting in 1905, this school has only one head teacher and four teachers for the 158 pupils. In subsequent years, teaching staff consists of European, Indian, Chinese and Malay. Only in 1924, this school has great teachers of Arabic descent, namely Mr Syed Shaidali.

In 1928, the school received a new name called "School Clifford" take the name of Governor of the Straits Settlements and High Commissioner of Malaya when this, Sir Hugh Clifford. Progress of this school depends on many pre-war efforts Educators European descent, Arabs, Chinese, Indian teachers also include Malay. During World War II, the school changed status of the Japanese military headquarters until 1946. After the end of the war, development and progress of school-hearted Clifford bersunguh developed by the then acting head teacher, Mr Arumukham together with staff of teachers. In that time, many schools face shortage of furniture and books.

Clifford School began offering science subjects in 1946 and the years of the 1940s showed a good performance from the aspect of the test. Senior Cambridge public release also saw the opportunity to study in institutions of higher learning such as Singapore Raffles College of Medicine, College of Agriculture Serdang and foreign universities, specifically Britain. Senior Cambridge examination results also show the performance of the most proud of because there is not a Malay child deserves to fail then.

At age 100 years, Clifford School is indeed fortunate to be selected as one of the pioneer schools "Smart Schools". Hopefully Clifford School will grow in times to come.

"THE SHIP" is a symbolic word which means "School" and "THE CREW" means "STUDENT".

Therefore, the meaning implied for the school motto 'THE SHIP IS MORE THAN THE CREW' is a school or alma mater (Mother's) more important than students. More clearly the meaning of each school leavers, this will be or has been building success after studying in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Clifford. School has been providing all kinds of facilities, guidance, encouragement, advice and experience so that students become leaders in various fields of work.

Accordingly, the Clifford School leavers should not forgetting school. Instead they should always call the school and provide various contributions. Clifford graduate students must also unite in any business or school problems. Do not like 'Cover beans forget'.

Kuala Kangsar Heritage Palace ( Istana Kenangan)

The Istana Kenangan is a charming wooden structure in Kuala Kangsar, now housing the Muzium Diraja Perak, or Perak Royal Museum. Also known as Istana Lembah and Istana Tepas, Istana Kenangan is a short distance from Istana Iskandariah and the Ubudiah Mosque. On my second visit to Istana Kenangan, I was fortunate that it was a very clear day, so I could get these nice shots for AsiaExplorers.

Istana Kenangan was built around the same time as Istana Iskandariah. After the calamity of the Big Flood of 1926, when the original palace, Istana Sri Sayong, was almost swept away, a decision was made to built a new palace that is on higher ground. Istana Kenangan was built as a temporary mausoleum for the late Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Iskandar Shah (Marhum Kadasallah), while awaiting the completion of Istana Iskandariah nearby.

Istana Kenangan is noted for being built entirely of wood, without the use of nails. It was planned to shape like a sword (pedang) in its scabbard (sarung pedang). The handle of the sword is where the Sultan's bedchamber is located. The scabbard is where the royal court or Balai Rong Seri was located. Although small, it has a beautiful throne (singgahsana). The walls are made of diamond-shaped plaits (kelarai) while the roof structure takes the combined styles of the five ridges (perabung lima) and the ridge of the five bananas (perabung pisang sesikat).

Today Istana Kenangan comes under the state museum authority, and houses the Perak Royal Museum. On display here are exhibists on the history of the Perak monarchy as well as the personal collections of the past rulers of Perak.

ISTANA ISKANDARIAH

Istana Iskandariah is the official residence of all the Sultans of Perak who have been installed since its completion in 1933. The palace is named after Sultan Iskandar Shah (1918-1938) who initiated its construction.

Istana Iskandariah is located at Bukit Chandan on the left bank of Sungai Perak upstream from Hilir Perak on the site of the former Istana Negara which was built in 1895 by Almarhum Sultan Idris Murshidul'adzam Shah (the late Sultan (in 1887-1916). It occupies an area of 10,435 square meters.

Upon the demise of Sultan Iskandar in 1938, Almarhum Sultan Abdul Aziz (1938-1948) succeeded him and moved into the palace. In 1948, Sultan Yussuff Izzuddin Shah (1948-1963) moved from Istana Kota (Istana Hijau) to Istana Iskandariah to succeed Sultan Abdul Aziz and in 1963, Sultan Idris Shah II (1963-1984) ascended the throne and stayed there until his demise in 1984.

The design of the palace is based on the architecture of West Asia which is famous for its pointed arches and onion-shaped domes. The building is rectangular in shape and faces the sunrise and the river.

The roof is designed with one main dome in the centre and four subsidiary domes, one on each of the palace.

The palace is of there storey. The ground floor houses The Royal Dining Room, two Audience Halls, Reception Area, the Royal Rest Chambers, Ladies' Cloak Room, Aide-de-Camp's Office, Music Hall and the Royal Council Chamber.

On the first floor are located the Princesses' bedrooms, two Royal Guest Rooms and Their Royal Highnesses' suite; while the second floor houses of the Princess's bedrooms and another Royal Guest Room.

Above the second floor and under the main dome is a minaret. Here the hall measures 9.8 square meters and is used by the Royal family as a family hall.

In 1984, Istana Iskandariah was extended towards the rear by an additional 11,468 square meters, at the same level ass the main palace and is connected to it by a covered bridge at the first floor level.

The architecture of the extension is similar to that of the main palace so that it appears as if it were one building constructed at the same time.
The extension which measures 99 meters by 38.7 meters is rectangular in shape with one main dome and four smaller ones, one at each corner. AS can be seen now, the palace has two main domes and eight smaller ones located at each corner of the palace.

The ground floor of the extension is the garage for the Royal cars, the first floor is the new Banquet Hall, while the second floor is the new Throne Room (Balairong Seri).

The Throne Room and Banquet Hall are decorated with carvings of BUNGA KELUMPANG.

Ubudiah Mosque

Masjid Ubudiah is Perak's royal mosque, and is located in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar, Malaysia. It is often regarded as Malaysia's most beautiful mosque.

History

Masjid Ubudiah - ranking high on the list of Malaysia's most beautiful mosques, the Masjid Ubudiah (or Ubudiah Mosque) stands proudly and majestically in Kuala Kangsar, with its golden dome and minarets creating a spellbinding sight, from near and afar.
The mosque was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, a government architect who is notably credited for the design of the Ipoh railway station and the Kuala Lumpur railway station.
Built in 1917 during the reign of the 28th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul'adzam Shah 1, the Masjid Ubudiah is located beside the Royal Mausoleum on Bukit Chandan. It was commissioned on the orders of the Sultan, who vowed that he would build a mosque of great beauty as thanksgiving for recovery from an illness which plagued him in those early days.
The construction of the mosque was not without difficulties. Work was interrupted several times, once when two elephants belonging to the sultan's and Raja Chulan were fighting and ran over and damaged the imported Italian marble titles.
The mosque was finally completed in late 1917 at a total cost of RM200,000- quite an astronomical figure for those days. It was officially declared open by Sultan Abdul Jalil Karamtullah Shah, successor to Sultan Idris. This imposing structure is now a symbol of great pride to all Muslims in the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan, the Land of Grace.

Malay College Kuala Kangsar

Fiat Sapientia Virtus (Manliness Through Wisdom)

The Malay College Kuala Kangsar (Malay College, MCKK, MC or Koleq, Kolek and sometimes dubbed "the Eton of the East") is a residential school in Malaysia. It is an all-boys and all-Malay school located in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar, Perak. In the Malay language, it is called Kolej Melayu Kuala Kangsar or formerly Maktab Melayu Kuala Kangsar.

Coat of Arms

The shield is quartered, coloured white (argent) in the first quarter, red (gules) in the second, black (sable) in the third and yellow (or) in the fourth.
The colors represent the four Houses into which the students are grouped; Idris (white), Sulaiman (red), Mohd Shah (yellow) and Ahmad (black). The Houses are named in honor of the four Sultans who founded the College.
In the middle of the shield is a red kris, a traditional Malay dagger. On top of the crest is a head of a tiger which is the symbol of the Federation of Malaya. Surrounding the left and right side of the shield are laurel wreaths symbolizing excellence. The school motto is Fiat Sapientia Virtus, which is Latin for Manliness Through Wisdom.

History

Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) is the first fully-residential school in Malaysia. Established on 2nd January, 1905, it was originally known as the Malay Residential School of Kuala Kangsar.
The school was the brainchild of Mr R J Wilkinson, then Inspector of Schools for the Federated Malay States. In a letter to the Resident-General dated 24 February 1904 he wrote about "establishing at a suitable locality in the F.M.S., a special residential school for the education of Malays of good family and for the training of Malay boys for admission to certain branches of Government service".
Its formation was supported by the then Rulers of the Federated Malay States namely Sultan Idris Murshidul ‘Adzam Shah I of Perak, Sultan Alaiddin Sulaiman Shah of Selangor, Yam Tuan Tuanku Muhammad Shah of Negeri Sembilan and Sultan Ahmad Mu’adzam Shah of Pahang.
Mr W Hargreaves, then Headmaster of Penang Free School was appointed as the first headmaster to lead the establishment of the school. Since 1965, the Malay College has been led by Malay headmasters.
As it was founded to educate the Malay elite, comprising of royal children and the sons of Malay nobility, few of its early students were from amongst commoner families. This changed dramatically after 1947, as a result of rising Malay nationalism. Today, selected Malay boys aged from 12 to 17 from around Malaysia are being educated there.
The Straits Echo on 15 April 1905 reported that a few boys were placed in cosy dormitories in Mr Hargreaves’ rented house, while the others were stabled in small houses formerly occupied by the Malayan Railway clerks. The second half of the school, conducted by Mr Vanrenen was held in a fowl house. There were 40 boys in the first intake of the school.
The sanction for the building of a permanent school became official on 23 December 1905, and by 1 May 1909, the Big School was first brought into use. On Saturday, 11 December 1909, the Big School was officially opened by the Sultan of Perak, and the auspicious date also marked the change in the name of the school from the Malay Residential School of Kuala Kangsar to the Malay College of Kuala Kangsar.
The change also seems to have seen greater emphasis on the original aim of MCKK. A report from 1910 said: "From this school the Government have great hopes that the sons of Malays of the Raja and higher class will be educated and trained on the lines of an English Public School and be fitted to take a share in the Government of their Country".
Since its inception, more than 5,000 boys (and 2 girls) have entered the gates of MCKK.
The college celebrated its centenary on 26 March 2005, attended by dignitaries, old boys, and townspeople. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia attended the event, along with the royal rulers of the states of Perak, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan as well as the governor of Malacca.
On June 10 2006, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan visited the school. The monarchs had promised to visit the school back in 1990s.
Since 30 May 2007, the Malaysian Ministry of Education has recognized MCKK as a cluster school.
MCKK has been the school for many prominent Malaysians such as kings, sultans, prime ministers, ministers as well as senior officials in the Government and leading figures in the private sector.

Buildings

The Clock Tower. The tower and the administration block was opened by the High Commissioner for the Federation of Malaya Sir Donald MacGillivray in 1955.

The most recognizable feature of the school is the Big School (built in 1909), a building with pseudo Greco-Roman architecture fronted by a rugby field. The Prep School, built later in 1912, is smaller but with equally prominent features. In 1955, the West and East Wing, as well as the Administration Block and Clocktower were added. The Administrative Block was opened by High Commissioner for the Federation of Malaya Sir Donald MacGillivray in 1955. The West and the East Wing, together with the Overfloor make up what is now called the Big School. Two more hostel blocks, the Pavilion and New Hostel were built in 1963 and 1972 respectively; the latter houses second formers. Another prominent feature of the school is the Big Tree, a raintree (Samanea saman) in front of the East Wing that is said to be as old as the school itself.

Sports

The school has three fields. One is located in front of the Big School, reserved for rugby, soccer and cricket. The second field is located south eastern of the Big School and it hosts field hockey game. The third open space is in the Administration Block and it is used for various purposes.
The College ground is also the only place in Malaysia where one could find an Eton Fives court. The students neither use the court nor do they play the game, however.
The school also excels in sports and debate. It became a powerhouse in rugby during the sixties and still has one of the best rugby school teams in the nation . Nicknamed "All-Blacks" after the New Zealand national team for its all black strip, they perform the haka before matches. It has held a match series against the Vajiravudh College of Thailand since 1960. In odd-numbered years, the match is held in Kuala Kangsar. In even-numbered years, it is held in Bangkok, Thailand. In addition to this, MCKK competes with rival Royal Military College every year in a multi-games carnival.
Within the school, each student belongs to one of four "Rumah" (sport houses), named after the founders of the school. They are Sulaiman (represented by the color red), Ahmad (black), Mohd Shah (yellow) and Idris (white). The four houses compete with each other in sport. The competition between the four reaches its peak in the school's Sports Day.

Alumni

The alumni association of MCKK is known as the Malay College Old Boys' Association (MCOBA) and it was established in 1929.
Amongst the more notable alumni of the Malay College are: Dato' Onn Jaafar, the father of Malay nationalism and former Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, the former Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysian ministers Hishammuddin Hussein, Effendi Norwawi, Fauzi Abdul Rahman and Nazri Aziz, politician and former chairman of the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club Shahrir Samad, the Sultans of Pahang and Perak, late Omar Ali Saifuddin III of Brunei from 1932 to 1936 and the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. Pak Sako or Ishak Haji Muhammad, Tan Sri Yahya Ahmad and Dr. Azahari Husin were also alumni.
The novelist and composer Anthony Burgess (1917-93), author of The Long Day Wanes: A Malayan Trilogy, was a master at MCKK. He taught English and history, and was housemaster at King's Pavilion, between 1956 and 1957 during the headmastership of J.D.R. "Jimmy" Howell. Burgess composed Sinfoni Melayu (1956) and later Sinfoni Malaya for orchestra and brass band (1957), which included cries of "Merdeka!" from the audience. He also wrote two pieces for MCKK. These were the 'Ode: Celebration for a Malay college', for boys' voices and piano (1954), and 'Cantata for a Malay college' (1954).
The alumni association is based in the Penthouse of the MCOBA building in Kuala Lumpur, which is also home of UEM.

Traditions

A few school traditions survive:

the wearing of one of two forms of the school tie every Wednesday by the old boys.
the annual gathering lasting around three days at the school itself - referred to as Old Boys Weekend. During the weekend, sports matches are held between the Old Boys and the students, culminating with a rugby match on Sunday morning.
an annual formal dinner for old boys, usually held in a ballroom in Kuala Lumpur.
the school cheering where almost every student is required to sing in unison various fight songs during official sport matches while wearing a specially designed polo-shirt.

Kuala Kangsar (population 39,300) is the royal town of Perak, Malaysia, located at the downstream of Kangsar River, where it flows into the Perak River. It is the main town in the administrative district of Kuala Kangsar.
This place must have had a strange effect on Sultan Yusuf Sharifuddin Mudzaffar Shah of Perak who ruled from 1877 to 1887. Unlike many rulers who protected their royal places and strongholds by selecting their vantage points carefully where they could detect enemy approach from afar, the Sultan had his first royal palace built beside the riverbank. He then named it 'Istana Sri Sayong'.
Apart from being exposed to the impending threat of invasion, the other problem was the force of monsoon seasons, which led to numerous flooding as water gushed down from the jungles above through the many tributaries. The name Kuala Kangsar is believed to be derived from 'Kuala Kurang-Sa', which literally means '100 minus one', usually interpreted as 'the 99th small tributary to flow into the Perak River'.
One flooding was so severe, it almost swept the palace away. Finally, after the Big Flood or Air Bah in 1926, it was decided to move the place further up onto the knoll where stands the current Royal Palace named Istana Iskandariah with its Art-Deco architecture, a rare but significant piece of architectural milestone in Malaysia.
The Sultan of Perak officially resides in Kuala Kangsar, and it has been Perak's royal seat since the 18th century. It is one of four towns that plays a role in Perak's complex succession system. It was the administrative seat of the first British Resident in the Malay Peninsula, James W.W. Birch, from October 1874 until he was murdered on November 2, 1875.
Kuala Kangsar is also known in Malaysian history as the site where the first Conference of Rulers, the Durbar, was held in 1897. By the 1890s, the growth of the tin mining towns of Ipoh and Taiping had eclipsed Kuala Kangsar, but it remains to this day one of the most attractive of the Malay royal capitals.
The town is also the site of the first rubber tree planted in Malaysia. The person responsible was the English botanist Henry Nicholas Ridley. He was the one who helped Malaya and eventually Malaysia become the largest rubber producer in the world. The tree still stands today.
The first Malaysian scout troop was established in Kuala Kangsar. Consequently, its squad number is 001.
Two bridges now connect Kuala Kangsar to Sayong. Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Bridge is made out of concrete and is located near the town while Sultan Iskandar Bridge is farther upstream and is made out of steel. Kuala Kangsar is easily accessible via the North-South Expressway and by train.
Kuala Kangsar is a relaxing town where visitors can have an enjoyable day with few worries about the daily schedules.

INTRODUCTION
