Situated in Southeast Asia, Malaysia, with an area of 329,750 sq km (127,317 sq mi), consists of two noncontiguous areas: Peninsular Malaysia (formerly West Malaysia), on the Asian mainland, and the states of Sarawak and Sabah, known together as East Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. Comparatively, the area occupied by Malaysia is slightly larger than the state of New Mexico. Peninsular Malaysia, protruding southward from the mainland of Asia, comprises an area of 131,587 sq km (50,806 sq mi), extending 748 km (465 mi) SSE-NNW and 322 km (200 mi) ENE-WSW . It is bordered on the N by Thailand, on the E by the South China Sea, on the S by the Strait of Johore, and on the W by the Strait of Malacca and the Andaman Sea, with a total boundary length of 2,068 km (1,285 mi). Sarawak, covering an area of 124,449 sq km (48,050 sq mi), on the northwest coast of Borneo, extends 679 km (422 mi) NNE-SSW and 254 km (158 mi) ESE-WNW . It is bounded by Brunei on the N , Sabah on the NE , Indonesia on the E and S, and the South China Sea on the W . Sarawak's total boundary length is 2,621 km (1,629 mi). Situated at the northern end of Borneo, Sabah has an area of 74,398 sq km (28,725 sq mi), with a length of 412 km (256 mi) E-W and a width of 328 km (204 mi) N – S . To the N is the Balabac Strait, to the NE the Sulu Sea, to the SE the Celebes Sea, to the S Indonesia, to the SW Sarawak, and to the W the South China Sea, with a total boundary length of 2,008 km (1,248 mi). The total boundary length of Malaysia is 7,344 km (4,563 mi), of which 4,675 km (2,905 mi) is coastline.

Malaysia claims several atolls of the Spratly Island group in the South China Sea. The claim, in a region where oil is suspected, is disputed by China, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur, is located in the western part of Peninsular Malaysia.

WITH BUS,Malaysia has a very good express bus system. Express bus travel is the easiest, cheapest, most popular way to travel between states in Malaysia. The express buses are modern and comfortable, service is frequent, and fares are low to moderate. There are even express bus services between Malaysia and Singapore, and between Malaysia and Thailand.

In larger towns there may be a number of bus stations; local / regional buses often operate from one station and long distance express buses from another; in other cases, Kuala Lumpur for example, Puduraya and Pekeliling bus stations are differentiated by the destinations they serve.

Express buses in Malaysia are fast, economical and comfortable, and seats can be reserved. There are so many express buses in Malaysia on major runs that you can often turn up and get a seat on the next express bus except around holidays (especially near to or after Chinese New Year and Hari Raya).

Puduraya Bus Terminal is closed (from April 13 for at least four months) for massive upgrading and renovation works . North and south-bound travellers are now to board buses at the Bukit Jalil Complex Parking Lot F (adjacent to the Bukit Jalil hockey stadium) . RapidKL Shuttle buses from Puduraya to Bukit Jalil and vice-versa are available at a fee of RM2 with a frequency of 15 minutes . Malaysia is always famous for its variety of foods. Although the whole country is like a huge dining place, there are still foods ‘belongs’ to certain places or places that stand out as representing some particular cooking or foods.

Due to the geographical location and history back ground, apart from cuisines which representing the three major races, Terengganu food has shown the influence of Thai culture and taste. Terengganu has abundance of rice based dishes such as nasi dagang, nasi kunyit, nasi kuning, nasi berlauk, nasi lemak and nasi kerabu. There is laksam, laksa Terengganu, otak-otak, sata, pulut lepa, ketupat sotong and kerepok lekor. Dining out is relatively inexpensive and there are always plenty of choices range from hotel food to hawker food.

Taste This :
Bubu lambut or herbs rice porridge is a Terengganu traditional porridge cook with differ kinds of herbs, sweet potatoes, fish crackers, dry prawn etc. Young leaves and shoots of paku miding that are found growing on peat swamp forest is one of bubu lambut ingredients.

KETUPAT PALAS

The Malay cooking always have their homegrown ingredients such as coconut milk, lemon grass, lime leaves, screw pine leaves (pandan leave) and tumeric etc. to cook with meat or vegetables together with a traditional accompaniment of a hot and spicy sambal belacan which is made of prawn paste, ground chili and condiments. Indeed, no Malay meal is complete without the sambal ! Rice forms the main staple of the Malays, and this is often taken with a variety of dishes. Daily meals are based on white rice, and coconut milk is always one of the ingredient in the cooking.

NASI KUKUS

Famous Mak Ngah Nasi Dagang restaurant at Cendering. Nasi Dagang,KUALA besut nasi dagang or literally the ‘trader’s rice’ which is said is the rice that was eaten by trader on their business journey. Nasi dagang is, perhaps the most representing food for Terengganu. The dish is mixes of rice and glutinous rich with coconut milk added once it is cooked. The rice is eaten with tuna curry and light vegetable pickles.

AKOK

Kedai Nasi Kerabu, Opens 11:00-3:30pm. Located right across from the main entrance to Wisma Darul Iman (the Terengganu state government buildings). Nasi kerabu, a dish of rice tinted bright blue and eaten with ulam, fried salted fish, fish crackers and other garnishings. The blue which comes from the petals of bunga telang (clitoria) used in the cooking variety is the most common, but there are many versions depending on the colour of the rice. Prices are a bit more expensive here but they have good local specialties.

Central Market (08:00am-2:00pm) and Foods warong along Jalan Sultan Sulaiman (4:00pm-12:00pm) : Serves numerous good local Malay food. Try Laksam is quite similar to the western pasta except the wheat and rice flour mixing dough is steamed but not boiled. It is eat with boiled and pureed fish gravy which is mixed with coconut milk. Some warong serves good nasi lemak Nasi lemak is another typical Malay food. The rice is cooked with coconut milk then eaten with ikan bilis, sambal, slices of cucumber, egg and peanut.

Besides the main menu, there are a numbers of Malay dessert or little eat in Terengganu traditional Malay menu.

Keropok is cracker made of fish which is ground to a paste then mixed with sago before it is steamed and later deep fried. It is the snack instead of a proper meal and sometimes is served as the snack before meal. It can be eaten either when it is steamed or deep fried, both give different taste. The long chewy ones are called keropok lekor while the thin crispy are called keping, means slice. Both the keropok is usually eaten with chili dip.Keropok is easily found elsewhere in Kuala Terengganu, from the stalls beside the road to restaurants or market. If you wish to bring home some, go to the Central Market for dried keropok or fresh in Losong who is famous with largest Museum in Malaysia and its keropok. Kak Yah's stall is the most popular at Losong, prof of that is Kak Yah magnificents house located next to her stall. Some say stall 007 near Floating Mosque is the best among this, well, find it out yourself.

Satar is another fish snack in Terengganu Malay cuisine. It is mixture of pounded fish, shallots and ginger wrapped in banana leaf, pierce of few by 1 single bamboo stick then barbecue over low fire. The best stall are by the road of Chendering, sold by an old couple in a Ford Vargon or Warung Che Wan at Kuala Kemaman if not, you can try your luck at Central Market.

Onde Onde, a very tangy and fluffy, Malay delicacy, with grated nuts as fillings and generously coated with a layer of coconut gratings.

Solok Lada, Chillies suffed with fish paste which has beed spiced with ginger and coconut milk.

Pulut Inti, a kind of dry rice pudding made from glutinous rice & coconut milk as the topping. It is cooked by steaming. The dessert rice is topped with fresh grated coconut sweetened with palm sugar. It is traditionally wrapped in banana leaves folded into a pyramid shape.

Roti Jala, 'net bread’ or crepes is a net or lacy type of crepe, which sometimes replaces the staple rice, made from a crepe-like batter. A special cup or mould with small holes is used to make the lacy crepe which is cooked over a hot griddle. Roti Jala is often served during special occasions and is an ideal accompaniment to dishes with lots of rich curries or gravies like Malaysian Chicken Curry, Chicken Kapitan, or Mutton Kurma.

Pulut Lepa made of glutinous rice and fish, this snack food is prepared over a barbecue. Boiled fish meat is mixed with sliced onions, and dried chilies and coconut. The mixture is cooked until it is dry. This is then used as a filling for the glutinous rice rolls. Wrappings of banana leaf cover the food before it is cooked over the fire.

Rendang, is the meat dish that is prepared with coconut milk, chilies, onions and other condiments. Eaten with rice, the tasty tender meat is a delectable dish. It is a must at most Malay functions.

Nekbat is a light dessert made of rice flour and eggs, prepared in a mould over a light fire. When it turns yellow and puffy it is to be eaten with syrup flavoured by pandan leaf.

Ketupat sotong is squid stuffed with glutinous rice bathed in a sea of cooked and thick coconut milk. The stuffing is soaked in coconut milk before it is put in the squids.

Lompat tikam is a sweet cold dessert made out of coconut milk and rice flour flavoured by pandan leaf.

Akak Cooked in a mould, eaten sweet or savoury. The sovoury version has a spiced beef filling and sweet version is pandan flavoured.

Buah Gomok is sweetmeat made out of glutinous rice flour, a filing of shredded coconut and a dark brown sugar derived from the coconut tree as well as powered fried green peas.

Bronok is sweetmeat made out of boiling sago, sugar, red coloring and coated with shredded coconut.

SATA

Most of these desserts can be found at the Central Market or stall beside the road or perhaps the famous ‘Kuih Corner’ at Jalan Panji Alam, behind the female hostel of a religion school, Sekolah Menengah Agama Khairiah. Stalls along Pantai Batu Buruk also serves good desserts. Or maybe it is a good idea to have a short visit to the night market (pasar malam), this is the place to hunt for food that you have never tried before.

Although you can find fresh fruit juice elsewhere in Malaysia, Kuala Terengganu offers you something special from the ordinary. In Sebarang Takir Gelas Besar you can get an extra ordinary huge glass of fresh fruit juice with only Rm2.50. Take minibuses to Seberang Takir from local bus station and ask for Gelas Besar restaurant. It is usually operates from afternoon on.

Chinese cuisine seems to have endless choices and various ways of preparing. Each of these is stem from the different parts of China from which the early immigrants originated.

Chinese food is sometimes categorised into hawker food and restaurant food. Hawker food is always precooked and simpler in the preparation whereas restaurant food always involves more complicated or ‘formal and traditional’ way of preparation and serving. Hawker food normally found in hawker center and coffee shops whereas for restaurant food, like the name implied is served in the restaurant.

What are the famous Chinese hawker food in Terengganu?

Roti paun (little bun) is the toasted small rectangle bread loaf that is make up from 4 little buns. This little toasted bun goes well with margarine, butter or kaya (home made coconut jam).

Hainan Chicken Rice, it is one of the most popular everyday meal served in food stalls and eateries all over Malaysia. This chicken and rice dish is garnished with cucumbers, scallions and cilantro, sometimes served with a side of soup from the broth. A dipping sauce of chili, garlic, ginger and lime juice is a must-have to complete this meal!

Clay Pot Rice where, rice is cooked in a clay pot with slices of a sweet Chinese sausage with chicken, dark soy sauce and scallions.

Curry Mee or curry noodles uses the yellow egg noodles and is served in a light curry gravy with cockles, prawns, cuttlefish, fried soy cakes, bean sprouts and a hot chili paste.

Char Kway Teow, fried flat noodles are stir fried in a little lard with shrimp, cockles, bean sprouts, egg, chives and made spicy hot to taste with chili paste.

Ewe Char Koay or the Chinese doughnut is long, usually twin pieces of dough are deep fried and eaten for breakfast. It is great for dunking in coffee as well as a tea-time snack. Other doughnut such as Ham Jim Bang (stuffed with red bean paste), Ma Kok (with sesame seeds) etc are normally sold together with Ewe Char Koay.

Ais Kacang, the shaved ice dessert is a favorite local dessert especially in a hot sunny afternoon. It is also called ABC. Sweet red beans, agar agar (seaweed jelly), barley pearls, sweet corn and fruits are covered with shaved ice, then laced with rose syrup, brown sugar syrup and sweetened condensed milk. Cool!

Loh Hon Ko is the cold drink which is boiled with dried mangosteen and served in either warm or cold is believed to have cooling effects to the body.

While knowing all these yummie food, where can you find them?

Most of the stall in the hawker center near China Town can ‘heal’ your empty stomach with these yummie food, Ah Siu serves good ABC, Stall 33A popolar with soy beans drinks, loh han ko and Ah Tong (A-32 B) famous for chinese herbal soups and deep fried tidbits. David stall near China Town arch served very good fresh fruits juice and fried keow teow.For the best taste and Roti paun try the Sin Ping Xiang in China Town.

If you prefer a proper few courses Chinese meal, perhaps you can go to Good Luck Restoran at Jalan Kota Lama, Restoran Ocean which is by the sea at Jalan Sultan Zainal Abdin and the neighbour Restoran Tian Kee who serves steamboat, Golden Dragon at China Town etc., and order something different besides your usual Chinese fried rice.

You can have pomfret, grouper or even cod fish either in steamed or sweet sour sauce or deep fried as you like. Pomfret is always best to serve in steamed which is always sprinkled with fresh ginger, light soy sauce and sesame oil. Grouper is popular to go with hot and spicy sauce after being coated with flour and deep fried.

Chinese Kale with Oyster Sauce usually blanched whole in hot boiling water till tender, it is quickly drained, topped with oyster sauce and garnished with fried garlic crisps and sesame oil. This popular vegetable dish also makes a great vegetarian dish when made with vegetarian oyster sauce.

To the outskirt of Kuala Terengganu, you can hunt for seafood.

Partly due to the strategic location which near the port, outskirt places like Kemaman and Dungun is ideal place to go for seafood, especially crab. Apart from the national petroleum producer, Petronas oil production activities, Kemaman is also famous with stuffed crab. It is the stuffed crab shell with chunk crab meat filling before being deep fried. One of the famous restaurants with this Chinese cuisine is Tong Juan at Jalan Sulaiman of Chukai Kemaman.

Indian Food

Though Indian is the minority in Terengganu, there are still places to hunt for good Indian food. Local Indian cuisine can be either representing the Northern Indian, Southern Indian. In Malaysia, there is a proliferation of Indian restaurants and Indian food stalls, famously known as Mamak stalls. Mamak means Uncle in Tamil. Cooking, Spices are always the heart and soul of Indian by the way.

Nasi Biryani is a main course rice with dish served, especially on special occasions like weddings, where this saffron flavored steamed rice is made aromatic with Indian spices. It is always layered with spiced chicken, lamb or mutton. It is sometime served with Pappadums, a kind of flat, thin breads that are made from lentil flour and are sometimes flavored with whole cumin seeds.

Mutton Kurma or mutton curry is a mild but flavorful curry with lamb or mutton cooked in a medley of spices - coriander, cumin, aniseed, peppercorns, turmeric, cloves, star anise, cinnamon sticks, nutmegs and cardamoms. Besides rice or bread, this dish also goes great with Roti Jala.

Tandoori Chicken is an all-time favorite, where whole young chickens or chicken quarters are marinated for a long time in yoghurt and spices. It is then roasted in a special clay oven called a tandoor. The succulent pieces of chicken are usually served with a spicy mint sauce and plain or garlic Naan bread.

Fish Head Curry from grouper, cod and other big fish, is cooked in a medley of spices, chilies, tamarind and coconut milk. An acquired taste, this dish has, over the years, gained popularity, especially with fish aficionados, who know that the sweetest fish meat, is from the head and cheeks !

Indian Mee Goreng is fresh yellow noodles are stir fried with mutton or lamb, vegetables, tomato ketchup and spices, giving this fried noodle dish a distinctly unique Indian flavor! The Mamak is always known as a good Indian fried noodle server.

There are several types of different bread (‘Roti’ in Malay language) in Indian cuisine and is normally the typical food for breakfast or supper. Roti Canai also known as Roti Prata, is a kind of pancake prepared with wheat flour, eggs, ghee, or butter. It is eaten with meat or chicken curry. Best eaten hot, it is a perennial favourite served at most roadside stalls. Sometimes this roti is also stuff with other thing and named after the filling, Roti Telur (egg and onion), Roti Sardine (sardine) whereas Roti Pisang is (banana); Naan is the whole wheat bread. The dough is rolled out and then slapped on the inside of the tandoor or clay oven, near the top where it cooks very quickly in the fierce heat. It can be plain or sprinkled with chopped garlic, garlic Naan; Chapati, whole-wheat flat bread that has a delightful flavor and chewy texture. It is a popular bread to eat with curries especially rich meat curries; Murtabak is the stuffed pastry pancake filled with eggs, onions, fresh sliced chilies, with the addition of minced lamb or mutton. It is served with a side of curry gravy; Thosai or Dosai is the flat sour bread made from black grams & rice flour. It is served with sambal or savory gravies and coconut chutney. Thosai can also be stuffed with spiced potatoes and stewed vegetables and is called Masala Thosai or Masala Dosai; Idli which is steamed fluffy bread, shaped like a flying saucer, that is soft, dense & spongy. It is excellent for soaking up sambal usually served with it.

MD Curry House at Jalan Kampung Dalam, not far from Istana Maziah, who is well known for roti canai and banana leaf rice dishes, whereas Kari Asha at Jalan Air Jernih serves good range of Indian curries and Sri Shunmugam restaurant is famous for nasi beraini (served on friday) and banana leaf rice with mutton kurma. Do not pass up the chance to savour their teh tarik (pull tea), which is good.

Kuala Besut

Many misunderstood Kuala Besut belongs to Kelantan state simply because it is located far north from Terengganu, bordering with Kelantan and has significant Kelantanese influence.

This little fishing town is another jumping-off point for tourist to Pulau Perhentian besides Tok Bali of Kelantan. It is a compact square township with narrow streets, shops, hawkers center and souvenirs outlets in the town center.

A number of speedboats and tour operators for Pulau Perhentian can be found here. Crossing the bridge is the original fishing village of Kuala Besut. Here are the scenes and the characters that some tourists especially foreigners looking for. Also, just right after the bridge, there is a famous family run Malay food stall by the road offering delicious Nasing Dagang every morning.

Jerteh is about 15 km or 30 minutes journey from Kuala Besut. It is merely a transition town with less characteristic for those who is heading to catch a boat in Kuala Besut or Kota Bahru.

Kuala Dungun

Teluk Bidara. beach

STANDING at the Teluk Bidara beach near Dungun, Terengganu, one cannot but feel a closeness to nature.

Time almost stands still as the swaying palms and placid sea provide the ideal holiday setting.

The picture of an idyllic beach resort is complete with the wind and sun teasing the senses.

What locals take for granted is a luxury for city folk and foreigners who flock to the beach.

The beach, located near the traditional fishing village of Kampung Seberang Pintasan, is about 20km from Dungun.

Teluk Bidara Beach is about 2 hours, passing through the oil town of Kerteh, Paka and Dungun. This is probably the best beach in the East Coast's mainland. You would greet with a turquoise-blue ocean. The water at this beach is crystal-clear. There is a lanai-style gazebo where one could climb up for better view of the lovely ocean.

Far ahead you could see the islands of Tenggol and Nyireh, famous for prolific diving sites. The water is so clean and calms enough for a swimming. However, the beaches are beautiful, a dream really and extremely quiet, very peaceful.

There is a cave below the end of the hill near the shore where visitors can go in and get to the other side. You can climb the rocks and get a better view of the coast line.

Air Tawar Beach

4km from kuala besut,3km from bukit keluang, There is a playground and a beautiful natural lakes, basic facilities provided,Shaded by willowy trees, this scenic beach is ideal for picnicking on the golden sand. Pulau Perhentian can be clearly seen from here. The beach is very well-taken care of with facilities for recreational activities for the families in the evenings and weekends.

By car:
From Kuala Lumpur, take the East Coast Highway heading towards Kuala Terengganu. From Kuala Terengganu, head towards Kota Bharu. The beach is located in Kuala Besut near the border of Terengganu and Kelantan.
If you are from Kota Bharu, head towards Kuala Terengganu and when you reach Jerteh in Besut, take the exit to Kuala Besut. You'll find the beach before you reach the Kuala Besut Jetty.

Directions by Road

1. To drive to Tanjong Jara Resort from Kuala Lumpur, take the East-West (Karak) highway to Kuantan, starting at the first toll plaza at Gombak. Toll charges are approximately RM5 per car.

2. Follow the signboards to Kuantan.

3. You will exit the East-West highway at the second toll plaza at Karak. Charges are RM3 per car.

4. Take the Pantai Timur Express Highway. Exit at Gambang. Toll charges are RM16.90.

5. After Gambang, follow the signboard indicating the direction to Cherating/ Kuala Terengganu. You will bypass Kuantan town.

6. The trunk road will lead you to Cherating, Chukai/Kemaman, Kerteh and Paka where you can see the Paka Power Plant on your right.

7. After driving for approximately half hour after Paka, you will reach Dungun town. At the first traffic light, proceed straight for another 8 km towards Kuala Terengganu.

8. Just about 500 meters before the turning to Tanjong Jara Resort, you will see a yellow signboard indicating the Resort, which will be on the right side of the main road.

9. Turn right at this junction. Approximately 1km from the main road, you will see the Tanjong Jara Resort signboard on your left just outside the main entrance.

Rantau Abang Turtle Beach

Did you know ? Turtle Stone legend “Batu Penyu” that located in Bukit Che Hawa, Rantau Abang is believe to be the turtle queen that attracted the giant leatherback dermochelys coriacea turtles come to Rantau Abang beach every year in July to August to lay eggs.)

Rantau Abang is about 60 km from Kuala Terengganu, the nearest town is Dungun which is 22km to the south. This place is rather famous as the main nesting beach for turtles especially as one of the six nesting beach in the world for giant leatherback turtle (Dermocheleys coriaca). From May to September in every year, there will be visitors wait patiently and quietly on the beach for the turtle. The turtle will swim all the way back to here, then lumbering slowly on the sandy beaches to lay their eggs and disappear in the sea again. They normally lay their eggs when it is full moon and accompany with hide tide.

Nobody knows the reason why do these creatures choose to come back every year. However, the local believe that the turtles are attracted by two giant turtle stones (Batu Penyu) one lies between the bushes on a little hill in the village off the coast and another soaking in seawater. The mysterious stone on the hill is accessible in a 30 minutes short walk passing through the village. There is sign board along the way or you may get a villager to bring you there. Whereas the other one is covered by sand and water and is not visible any more.

Though there are conservation actions taken by the Fisheries Department, reports show that number of turtle coming back to lay theirs eggs every year is declining. This is partly due to the consequence of some incorporative action from the visitors such as pulling the turtle’s flippers, riding on the turtle, taking the eggs, etc.

Even not for the purpose of witnessing the egg laying ‘process’, Rantau Abang is still a great place for swimming, picnicking and sunbathing. The miles long clean and soft sandy beach is a temptation for many people. Local run chalets and guesthouses are just standing behind the beach, offering excellent rooms and services.

There is a Turtle Information Center situated by the main road, displaying information about turtles. A few minutes documentary is also played several times a day.

Batu Buruk Beach

Pantai Batu Buruk (beach of the ugly stone) Kuala Terengganu famous beach, white sandy beaches with swaying casuarinas lining up behind the shore, like a loyal friend to the waves. During windy days, playing kite on the beach is a good idea but swimming can be dangerous here.

Varieties food stalls can be found at Batu Buruk, try fried ice cream (Ais Krim Goreng), Nasi Dagang, Terengganu traditional rice, fried sea foods and Yunnan chicken rice. There is good night market every Friday from 3.00pm till 7.00pm. Pantai Buruk is also a popular place for strolling and good place to visit especially in the evening,This beautiful beach is just 1 km from the city center and can be reached by walking.

Perhaps this is the cleanest and widest beach inside Kuala Terengganu city. The Culture Centre stage pencak silat (Malay martial art), top spinning, kite flying, sepak raga and other traditional show from 5.00pm to 7.00pm every Friday from 1 April till 31 October, Check with the tourist office.

Merang Beach

Merang is the gateway to the world famous archipelago of Redang islands. The beach, although not the most famous in the east coast, its long sandy beach and stretches of tall coconut trees and sparkling crystal clear sea water is somehow making Pantai Merang a good stop to enjoy the sea breeze before proceeding to next destination. There are some cheap chalets run by the local offering basic accommodation if you later decided to spend a night or so in this tranquil beach.

In general, the long coastline of Pantai Merang is located about 30 kilometres to the north of Kuala Terengganu

The name of "Merang" is rather unfortunate as it is often mistaken for another popular beach area that goes by the name of "Marang" to the south of Kuala Terengganu. In recent days, the many beaches along the stretch of coastal Setiu district have gained better visibility to the public with the ever-growing flock of tourists to the idyllic islands off the coast of Pantai Merang, namely Pulau Redang and Pulau Lang Tengah. In fact, regular island goers have to make the compulsory stop at Pantai Merang where the main passenger boat jetty is located.

As Pantai Merang gets out of the ghastly shadow of Pantai Marang, the proliferation of medium- and high-class resorts start to stamp its mark on this long stretch of beautiful beach. Hospitality establishments such as The Aryani and Sutra Beach Resort have been adorning its white sandy beaches for many years, and as of recently, Merang Suria Resort had joined the fray to capture a slice of stopover tourists heading to the popular islands off the coast of Terengganu. It is not uncommon for island-bound visitors originating from different parts of Malaysia and Singapore to stay overnight at the many beach resorts of Pantai Merang before appropriately heading to the islands from Merang Jetty.

Near to the confluence of Sungai Merang and the South China Sea, a massive breakwater has been erected to regulate the depth of the river estuary. The construction has resulted in a man-made lagoon fronting the camping ground on the beach. In the so-called public park area, the beach is decidedly beautiful with swaying coconut trees and shady casuarina trees that produce whistling sounds when the wind is blowing strongly.

A good spot for a visit is the Merang Observatory Station (or Balai Cerap for Universiti Darul Iman). The place looks like a planetarium and is actually used for sky-gazing to determine the beginning of the many special months of Islamic calendar. As the observatory is perched on top of a hill overlooking the vast expanse of Pantai Merang, the view can be considered spectacular.

Either park your car at a designated safe park (a daily parking rate of RM4 - RM7 fee will be levied) and then hitch a ride on the connecting shuttle to Merang village.

By Bus/taxi
From town, grab a local bus to Merang from the bus terminal although it may be infrequent and often waits till there are enough passengers before leaving.

Penarik Beach

Having read much about the relatively untouched coastal line of the Setiu district in Terengganu, we had to try the route for ourselves. And... we were not disappointed! This quiet coastal road is a gem to drive on. Almost traffic free, we drove through some of east coast's most beautiful, uninhabited stretches of beach. Much of the area is coated with wild, gnarled vegetation. Here and there, local fishermen park their boats amongst the mangroves as they stop to mend their traps and to install bubu(fish traps) in the shallow waters. Streams running into the ocean provide nursery grounds for young fries and also hunting grounds for monitor lizards, otters and an assortment of birds including predators like eagles and owls। It is also the perfect place for fishermen to hide from the heat of the day.

The smooth ride took us down to Penarik, a quiet, orderly little fishing village.Lining the path were kampung houses on stilts with tidy gardens. Fishing nets hung out to dry, rows of colourful batik sarongs lined washing lines - flapping in the gentle sea breeze.

A little way from the village is Penarik Inn .....somewhere to stay where the beach is clean, the sand is as fine and white as castor sugar and the hospitality is just nice - homey and unobtrusive. The main house where Penarik Inn's owners call 'home' is the central area. Behind is the reception ; close by is the kitchen and dining area. Most times than not, dinner is set out in the lawn, under the stars and between swaying coconut trees. Chalets are structured after kampung houses on stiltsThe chalets are spartan, and the bedlinen may be a little gaudy but its comfortable and has clean, airy attached bathrooms । For a mere RM55 per room per night, it's worth it for the tranquility. The owners, Baha and Ana moved away from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur some years ago to set up a whole new environment for their young, growing children. Now that the children are grown, they too help out at the Inn during their spare days.

For us, it allows us to dream a little more. A little quiet place where mingling with the locals, having time to indulge in a good book, good friends to share the hours with and the best thing? It's the perfect backdrop for a most memorable holiday. What else is there to life?? We wonder no more........

Bukit Keluang beach

It doesn? matter whether you like to explore caves or not, for Bukit Keluang offers you more than that. For starters, the view in this area promises to take your breath away.

Best of all, the caves at Bukit Keluang is not too difficult for novices who are seeking casual exploration. There are easy walkways to help you along so all you need is a flashlight, good shoes and an adventurous spirit. Of course, exploring without a guide is not advisable.

Its distinctive features are caves, which are easily reached by walkways. Try to conjure up an image of a very peaceful village with beautiful wooden houses, innocent looking children playing games such as hopscotch or marbles, cows grazing in the field, swaying coconut trees, fresh cool breeze and a spectacular curve of white, sandy beach. This description describes Merang to a tee.

La Hot Spring

Situated 140km north of Kuala Terengganu, the La Hot Spring water contains natural sulphur which is said to have healing properties. Visitors flock to this spring especially if they are afflicted with skin ailments.

There is more than just healing waters at the La Hot Springs in Terengganu. Located in Kampung La, at the foot of Gunung Tebu complex, La Hot Springs is the gateway to the Gunung Tebu Forest Reserve which is popular with adventurers who come to seek various tropical flora and fauna or to explore rock tunnels, streams and river
The warm waters of the hot springs that run along a stream are very inviting. Many come to take a dip in the waters which can reputedly cure various ailments such as skin diseases and muscle pain.

The more adventurous go abseiling, trek along jungle paths and go caving. Fishing in the river and camping are popular activities.

The rocks are one of the attractions. Under a 20-metre high rock called Batu Bahtera (Ship Rock) is a 15m “secret” passage. Crawl under the rock and you’ll get to the other side. Continue walking another 20 minutes and you’ll come to Sungai Misteri. The river is thus named as it disappears into a large hole near Sungai Ping.

Nearby is a scenic spot, Lata Berangin, where water falls majestically down a 50-metre rocky surface into a pond. Other places of interest include Batu Katak (Frog Rock), Gua Kelawar and Kolam Puteri.

Cemerung Waterfall

If trekking and picnicking at seaside or any recreational park has long become history in your life, perhaps a visit to Cemerong Waterfall can recall all your long lost memories and fun. Cemerong Waterfall or some call Lata Cemeruh is located in the inner land of Dungun, or about 30 minutes drive from Kg. Pasir Raja, another good point for trekking activities. Reaching 300m height, it is the tallest waterfall in Terengganu state.

While on the way there, you will pass by Bukit Besi which like the name tells, was once an iron mining mountain. Today, only a cave like hole left in the waist of the ‘bukit’. Just not far after the mountain, you will see a bolt of snowy white cloth falling like a curtain from a rocky mountain in front of you….it is Cemerong Waterfall from miles away. Isn’t it giving you ‘ommmp’ for the coming ‘breath taking’ trekking ?

It is not a new name for the local indeed. The small but tidy park furnished with hut and picnic places and ample parking space at the entrance can tell. But surprisingly it is not yet a promoting destination by the state tourism board.

It takes 2 hours trek before you can stand in front of the fall. The first part of the trek is probably sealed with concrete stairs and some little huts for picnic. Big and old trees standing all around. You hardly embrace any the trunk with 2 adults extending hands.

At the end of the stairs, just further down at your right is a natural huge swimming pool with a cascade. Laughter and screams from visitors who are having fun in the water come into your ears other than the unique voices from insects in the bush. This is the lower reaches of Cemerong Waterfall. But, hold your breath first. The best is always the last to arrive.

The 2 hours trek is never a boring and monotonous one if you know how to appreciate everything offered by the mother nature. Huge trees with roots extended to the earth’s surface and appear like a natural screen that can easily hide yourself. A good place to play hide and seek, huh! Beware, never-never play this kind of game in the jungle. There are plants that you cultivate as pot plant in your house and plants that you never see you knew the name for long. Watch out for pitcher plant along the way. One of the species found here is round in shape and appear in cluster, twining on another tree. Villagers and the aborigines here cook their rice in these pitcher plant by putting the rice inside and send for steaming…um, just imagine the fresh fragrance from the plant, it must be drooling.

Feel like doing some outward bound activities or action? Yes, you got it! During raining season, the trekking path becomes slippery. In order to continue the journey, rope has tied by the forestry department in some down slopping area, then hold the rope and scramble as you get down. Off course not that simple. Crossing river is a usual ‘itinerary’ in any trekking. The only river crossing in the journey is actually crossing a little stream (well, it is a stream in dry season but will turn into a real river in wet season). Riverbed of this little stream is granite stone. Water running slow on this flat rocky riverbed and turn into a fall when it reaches the edge. A rope was tied from one end to the other while a tree trunk was laid crossing the stream. Hold the rope and step on the trunk instead the slippery rocky riverbed. Be careful, a little carelessness will bring you to regrets.

There shouldn’t be any difficulties or hard time to trek in this jungle. It is just a journey to challenge your stamina and off course strength of your legs.

When the exhaustion feeling attacks you, suddenly sound from the tremendous fall is heard from far away, inspiring your exhaustion. But, it is only when you pass through a piece of bamboo then only you see it…standing far away but yet as though in front of you. Mouth will widely open but no words other than ‘COOL!!’ to express your feeling. At this moment of time, you will agree that all the difficulties and curses in the 2 hours trek is worth for a waterfall like this.

Water flush from the mountain, fall from 300m away then hit to the rock pool at the bottom, the resounding echoes are just like hitting thousands of drums in front of you. Before you soak yourself in the icing cold water, you are already bathed by the water splash from the fall. What to wait for? Jump into the water and have fun!

Sekayu Waterfalls

The Sekayu Waterfall is located within the Sekayu Recreational Forest in Kuala Berang. It was established in 1974 and officially launched in 1985.

Seven cascades here with water-cut pools which become the natural swimming pools make it a famous retreat for visitors. In wet season, you can hear the sound of rushing water falling from a high altitude from far away as you trek up the hill towards the pool. It is a pleasure experience

Not much trekking to be done for lowest level of the waterfall except you have to climb the concrete stairs. Picnicking places and resting huts are along the way. Only when you are not satisfied with the lowest pool and intend to challenge the mountain, there the real trekking will take place. Even so, is not going to be a difficult one as the mountain is not steep. If you are an expert in trees perhaps you can name some of the names of the trees along your way up. Sekayu is rich with Dipterocarp species such as Meranti and Damar Hitam (Shorea Species), Keruing (Dipterocarpus species) etc

Because of the long established history, the recreational park is well facilitated with public facilities such as shelters, changing room, chalets and rest house, providing for visitors’ convenience besides three units of fully furnished chalets with the price rated between Rm30 to Rm50 a night. Sekayu Waterfall is said to be one of the most comprehensive picnicking and trekking area in the state.

To offer more choices to the visitors, there is a fruit orchard, a mini zoo, a bird park and a flower garden. Because of the ease in access to this waterfall, during the weekends or holidays, people come here for picnic or camping (this is also partly because there are no restaurant at Sekayu, therefore you have to bring your own supply). It is no doubt why this recreational park has become one of the promoted agro-tourism destinations for the state.

The Sekayu camping site is a choice if you are interested in spending the night outdoor. It is advisable to arm yourself with mosquito repellents.

Getting there :
Sekayu waterfall can be accessed either through Kuala Berang (16 km) or Kuala Terengganu (56 km). there are buses and taxis from the main road to Kuala Terengganu to Kuala Berang then taxis from Kuala Berang to the waterfall. Along the way to the destination, you will pass through some traditional Malay villages. Padi fields, perhaps buffalos soaking themselves in the muddy water and villagers selling fresh corn by the road, giving you unspoiled country side scenery. RM 1.00 will be charged for each entry into the recreational forest.

Gunung Tebu

Mount Tebu is a mountain in the state of Terengganu Darul Iman, Malaysia where the mountain height is 1.039 meters (3.408 feet).
Mount Tebu is the highest peak in Terengganu with the height of about 1.039 meters (m) above sea level. It is located in setiu and uniqueness of his earth form interface attract local and foreign climbers visit the country. Mount Tebu has always been a goal of local climbers who regularly hold group travel, but some travel agencies offer packages expedition captured the summit of Mount Tebu. Climbing that mountain takes two or three days.

Forests and mountains in Terengganu are mainly located in the interior of the state which is also part of the Titiwangsa range. Some of the mountains are mainly composed of granite and are steeply tilted and founded sandstone outcrops along the river. This will require the assistance of some techniques and simple gears such as robe and hook. However, some mountains with trails properly marked help the climber a lot especially beginners.

Gunung Tebu is a unique peak shrouded in many tales and mysteries. The peak is huge with a beautiful surrounding of stunted trees and tall long grass. It will be good idea to adhere to rules tied to the superstitions and beliefs when you climb this mountain as many mysterious happening are said to have taken place here. The hike up can be done in about 5-6 hours and from the top, and spectacular sunrises with the views of the South China Sea can be seen. To get to the start of the trek, you have to take a bus to Besut town. From there, take a cab to Lata Tembakoh Recreational Forest where the trailhead is located.

Gunung Tebu is located in Besut, Terengganu, req 5~8 hrs hike to the summit of 'natural bongsai garden'. The summit has a camping ground which could house more than 50 twin sharing tents. Fresh water can be easily obtain fr the brook.
Allow a spectacular view for Pulau Perhentian, Bukit Keluang & Kuala Besut in good weather. Quite cooling at night. Be sure to bring enough clothing.

Climbing mountain is a pleasant experience in Terengganu simply because most of the mountains in this area are covered by thick tropical rainforest with rich vegetation in addition to the significant diverse of temperature between lowland and mountain area that creates a mossy and misty scenery in the forest.

Mountain climbing can be done in a day time and sometimes abseiling will involve in certain points. Therefore it is very important for you to be prepared before entering the jungle. Amongst the most common place to do this activity is Gunung Tebu in the north of Kuala Terengganu, Gunung Main Angin (1459m) and Gunung Gagau (1376m) in the Terengganu-Pahang border etc. which are the good spots to climb and spend some times up there. Seek for a reliable travel agency and get a guide which is normally inclusive in the service then hike yourself in the beautiful rainforest covered mountain.

Belatan Waterfalls

Located about 130 km from Kuala Terengganu and 40km from Besut, it is easily accessible by all forms of road transport. The cascading Lata Berangin waterfall is an ideal spot to rest after a tiring and strenuous jungle trek.

Challenging activities such as jungle trekking and abseiling are popular with visiting tourists and team-building groups. There are 3 trails of different levels of difficulty. However, all these trails will take visitors through several interesting places such as Lata Berangin, Batu Katak, Gua Bahtera and others.

The Lata Belatan Waterfall is another popular spot for family picnics. The many boulders serve as a walkway on the meandering stream and it's easy to take a dip in the shallow ox-bow lakes. The camping grounds are equipped with full facilities including changing rooms, food stalls and a picnic area.

The Lata Belantan Recreational Park is a normal outdoor area with a stream flowing through. During our visit, the so-called waterfall in the Park was reduced to a trickle. Most of the water for the stream had sipped through crevices behind the waterfall and by -passed the regular "Fall" route.

Tembakah Waterfalls

Hutan Lipur Lata Tembakah or Recreational Forest of Lata Tembakah which was developed in the years 1986 are located in the Forest Reserve of Simpan Pelagat in Besut. Which is about 25km from Pekan Seri Langkap or 130km from Kuala Terengganu.

Lata Tembakah is one of the most famous recreational forests in Terengganu as it is the home of the famous Lata Tembakah Waterfall and are the only forest which are majority and concentrate by the Meranti and Keruing trees.

The Lata Tembakah Waterfall is a 50m high waterfall which formed seven beautiful-tiered cascading level of waterfall that created a unique landmark to Hutan Lipur Lata Tembakah with a beautiful pool on each of the seven–tiered waterfall.

Beside the waterfall, there are also many rapids and small pond which are suitable for swimming, bathing and playing in the water. Every visitor including nature and adventure lovers will enjoy the jungle trekking activities along the trek and the overhang bridge. The trek and trail are well organised by the Forestry Department to provide ways to educate people on the importance of conservation of the forest and its effect to human kind.

Being blessed with many natural vegetation and beautiful waterfall, rapid and stream, the area is a great place to have a picnic at with family and friends over the weekend. The waterfall here are beautiful and alluring that you couldn't resist to enjoy a dip in its cold and refreshing river and waterfall that are crystal clear. The small pool and stream will also entertain the many children here as they will enjoy looking and trying to catch the many little fish and little shrimp that swim along they leg and feet.

There are many conveniences that are prepared here like chalet, rest house and camping ground for traveler who want to stay overnight. Many changing rooms and toilets along the river and park can also be found here. Beside that they are also Information Booth, resting hut and many souvenir shop can be found here.

From morning to late afternoon around 5.30pm, you can find many food stalls at the gate of Hutan Lipur Lata Tembakah.

The Recreational Forest in Malaysia are created to let human be close with nature which in the end will create an awareness and mutual respect among us towards the forest and to lead a healthy mind and body to the many visitors that came here.

Tenggol island

From afar the island resembles a person perching, so stood the name 'Tenggol'. 'Tenggak' in Bahasa Malaysia means 'to perch' but is pronounced as 'tenggol' in Terengganu's local dialect. For many, many years this deserted island retained its secret whereabouts. Apart from local fishermen waiting out the weather - Pulau Tenggol was pretty much left to nature.

Then came the Vietnam War and with that came the displaced victims of war..the boat people as we called them. During the late 70's and early 80's, in their last bid to escape their oppressive government, Vietnamese refugees spent all their life savings to buy themselves space on cramped wooden boats heading for a new life in the neighbouring countries. After a gruelling journey facing the dangers of storms, pirates and marine patrols, the last thing they needed was to be sent home. Upon arriving close to the beach, the refugees would 'break' their boats by crashing them on shallow waters.

The only long stretch of beach on Pulau Tenggol is at Teluk Air Tawar and in those days, it was completely hidden from view by overhang of umbrella trees, which lined the entire beachfront. Tenggol was the perfect hideaway.

When found by the Malaysian Marine Patrol, the refugees were herded and taken to the refugee camp on Pulau Bidong, a short distance from Pulau Redang. They stayed on at P.Bidong until the disbandment of camp 1991 in Today, local fishermen still moor their boats at Pulau Tenggol to shelter from sudden tropical sea storms. The other frequent visitors to the island are the turtles. For millions of years, green turtles and hawksbill turtles driven by their instincts have returned to the same beaches they hatched from, some 30 .40.50.60 years ago, to mate and nest.Now a new breed of visitors has found this tucked-away paradise. Gazetted as part of Terengganu Marine Park, much of the reef remains intact as fishing, spearfishing, harvesting of marine life for decorative purposes and food are strictly prohibited. Pulau Tenggol is a little out of reach from the throngs of weekend holidaymakers flocking to the famed islands of P.Redang, Perhentian and Kapas. A short ride by speedboat takes you to this wondrously underrated island which offers a traveller an abundance of nature's gifts.

Tenggol is especially popular with hardcore divers, and I hear some spearfishermen haunt the area too...

The sea conditions here are slightly more unpredictable then many favourite dive arenas on the east coast and it takes a pretty experienced diver to enjoy the place. It's wild, it's dangerous and it's challenging. If you're a good diver and you're in for a rush of adrenalin, this place is for you. At your own risk, of course.....

Though Pulau Rhu Hentian is a new born baby in the tourism industry in the country, some water activities such as swimming, snorkeling and diving are possible to be arranged through some travel agencies. Apart from this, due to the tiny size of this island enable visitor to make a 2 hours ‘orientation’ trek as a ‘get to know you’ activity.

News gathered from the state government that a resort, the Rhu Hentian Resort is being planned by the Fisheries Association of Kuala Besut as the first step to develop this little beautiful island. Perhaps by then you can add this new alternative to your itinery when planning your holiday.

Pulau Gemia is a privately owned island, about 800 metres off Kapas Island. Pulau Gemia has white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, beautiful corals and marine life as some of it’s natural pristine assets.
There's only one resort on the island named: Gem Wellness Spa & Island Resort. It's the former Gem Island Resort, In 2004 they renovated the existing chalets and they refurnished the whole resort. And it got a Spa.
The chalets (Water Villa's) themselves stand on sturdy concrete stilts, hugging the coastline, with views across the sea offering a perfect holiday escape.

There are no bus services directly to the Marang jetty. In Kuala Terengganu you can either charter a taxi or a van to take you to the Marang jetty.
There are many boat services to Pulau Gemia at the jetty in Marang. The most frequent and regular service provider is Suria Link. It takes about 15 minutes by speedboat. The office of Suria Link is where you can park your car for RM7. inclusive security. Charges are per-day basis.
The island is considered one of the most beautiful island getaways in this part of the East Coast. With patches of virgin forest covering the rocky hills in the centre, crystal-clear waters and spotless golden beaches, the resort is among the few destinations in the country still unspoilt by development.

The welcome upon arrival was very special. The people is so friendly! We had some beers and a few hours later we went to our Water Villa. The Water Villa's are so so large, but everything is tastefully decorated.
The king size bed has a mosquito net. There's an air-conditioning, which makes a little noise. and there's a van at the ceiling.

We spend many hours at the veranda with a lovely view at Pulau Kapas, which just a few hundred meters away from Pulau Gemia. We enjoyed looking at the coastline at Marang, where the jetty is leaving for this island.
under our veranda we could hear the rippling water and we looked down we saw hundreds of little crabs.
Regularly we see large shoals of fish coming by.
In the morning we saw dorsal fins of little baby-sharks in the water.

The sea in between Pulau Kapas and Pulau Gemia is also home to stunning coral gardens and other marine life. The spot is a haven for snorkelling and diving.

The resort has fitted up 4 chalets for a Spa, where Thai ladies are waiting for you to give you special spa treatment and therapies. In the package we had was an aroma therapy treatment. Also in the package deal was a bottle of red wine, which was served at dinner. The dinner was excellent, cuisine worthy.
At breakfast there was no Nasi Lemak, but we had warm croissants and fresh orange jus.
You can go snorkelling without taking the boat out. There are many things to see near the shore: corals of different shapes, colours and sizes, sea urchins, swordfishes, butterfly fishes, parrot fishes, bump head fishes, crabs, clams and lots of sea cucumbers. We even saw a clown fish, complete with its ‘house’ of sea anemone.

If you hire a boat to take you further out for snorkelling or even scuba diving or deep-sea fishing.

Those who love long walks on the beach should go to the north-eastern part of the island when the tide is low. Just remember to bring your slippers as the rocks and corals are very sharp. The rocks themselves look as if someone had mutilated them with a chain saw, but that’s just the way they’ve been formed by the elements

There are many interesting little creatures to discover, if you look close enough in the pools of water between the rocks and corals. Hermit crabs, sea snails, oysters, sea anemones (try feeding them) and, of course, more sea cucumbers.
If you have no patience for pottering around, visit the baby greenback turtles by the jetty. Pulau Gemia is part of a turtle hatchery programme. Turtle hatchlings are cared for until they’re old and strong enough to survive in the open sea.

THE white sandy beach, crystal clear water and picturesque scene made me fall in love with Redang island. I was touched by the glory of nature on the island, surrounded by the coconut trees.
It was an unforgettable trip. We stayed at Redang Beach Resort, did all the standard activities and mingled with other guests. At night, we enjoyed the barbecue, walked along the beach and sat on the rock enjoying the night scene. Snorkelling was most enjoyable. Since it was our first experience, there was initial fear which was overcome by curiosity. It was totally delightful to see corals, sea cucumber and colourful fish like reef shark, blue spotted stingray and clown fish.
The best was when the fish bit my finger and swam all around me. It was wonderful. This was my first trip to the island and definitely won't be the last!island and definitely won't be the last!

Redang is just like the Perhentian a Marine Park. It's located 45 km off the coast of KualaTerengganu is the largest of the group of islands dotting the South China Sea off the Terengganu coast. The island offers crystal clear waters and numerous dive sites for the enthusiast. Sheltered within the Pulau Redang Marine Park, the waters here abound with marine life.
Redang Archipelago exists of 9 islands that abound with marvelous marine fishes, turtles and coral reefs that ensure great snorkeling and scuba-diving.
The boat trip starts from the fishing village of Merang. This is a fishing village North of Kuala Terengganu. You can get there by bus. The boat trip takes about 40 minutes. Most of the boats depart for Redang and return before noon. Each resort has its own boat transfer schedule. This may change and is dependent on the tide, sea and weather conditions.
The best time to visit Redang is between April and October. Take note that most resorts are closed during the North-east Monsoon, which blows from November to March.

Redang island is perfect for snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, jungle trekking, boating and canoeing. This paradise-like island offers crystal clear water, pearly white shores, a colorful array of spectacular marine life, a breathtaking sunset and what could be the world's most mature coral gardens. This is your chance to see and be acquainted with the local eel, giant garoupa, black tipped shark, etc. Chance encounter with the Green turtle and Hawkbill turtle is common. There are corals of every imaginable shape, size or color. The observant are rewarded with sights of flatworm, nudibranch, shrimp, squid, cuttlefish, stonefish, lionfish and pipefish.
No fishing is allowed within a 3.2 km radius of the island as Pulau Redang. The collection of corals and other aquatic life is also prohibited. The fines and penalties are severe and each year sees reports of arrests and fines. Activities prohibited and not allowed are:

Collecting and taking of aquatic life ( corals, shell or fishes whether living or alive ).
Fishing without a license & Causing Pollution (3.2 km radius), i.e. littering Possession of spear fishing equipment.

The waters around Pulau Redang also contain two historic shipwrecks. The H.M.S Prince of Wales and the H.M.S Repulse were sunk here at the start of World War II, setting the stage for the Japanese occupation of Malaya.

The hilly island of Redang can be fascinating in its own way. There is a moderately well trodden and marked path between Pasir Panjang and Teluk Dalam beach, about 2 km long. Sights include a small stream and pools alive with catfish, the occasional encounter with the shy kancil (little deer) and monkeys, and other jungle flora and fauna. At the end of the trek is the Berjaya Redang Beach Resort at Teluk Dalam. For the more adventurous, there are rocky cliffs and outcrops away from this beaten path that offer spectacular overhead views of Pasir Panjang below.

This fishing village "Kampung Air" on wooden stilts is located jus across the Marine Park Centre at the mouth of the Redang river. Kampung Air, which in English means 'Water Village', was built in 1976 by the Terengganu State Government and is now home to about 1200 residents, mostly comprising fishermen and their families who are believed to be descendants of one of seven Bugis siblings from Celebes, Indonesia. The village school has about 200 students, most of whom prefer to work at the resorts on Redang Island rather than continue with the fishing tradition of their forefathers. Incidentally, these local fishermen are the only ones allowed to fish within the protected waters of Redang Marine Park as they have been doing before the park regulations were enforced. If you're visiting, try Mak Teh Yam's goreng pisang (banana fritters) at the Wakil Pos.

The people that lives on Pulau Redang are descendents of Bugis settlers who came from Celebes, Indonesia long time ago. It is said that seven of the Bugis siblings batins (Batin means holy men) from Celebes travelled here to look for new places to settle down. One of them called Batin Talib decided to make Pulau Redang his new home. Till today, only two of Batin Talib's colleagues can be traced. Batin Mina is said to settled down in Pulau Perhentian, in the north. Batin Mina's sister, Batin Cik Siti settled up river on the mainland (Ulu Terengganu). Where the other four Batins went were not known.

The early settlers Batin Talib and the first settlers established their first village at Teluk Kalong, an area facing a lagoon on the east side of the island. He and his villagers then moved to a smaller island down south where they found better shelter from the prevailing wind. This small island is covered with betel nut palms (pinang). They named this island Pulau Pinang.

In the seventies there are approximately 100 families living on Pulau Pinang. As the population grow, the villagers decided to move to the river mouth at Kuala Sungei Redang. Till today there are only two inhabited islands in the Redang Archipelago. Pulau Pinang which houses the marine park centre and Pulau Redang which is the homeland to approximately 250 families. The local people on this island primarily earned their living by traditional fishing. Now most of these fishermen's are entering the tourism industry which is growing rapidly on the island. All settlers around the whole island are moved to a new village approximately
4 kilometres inland.

Most resorts run at least 2 daily trips to Redang using either their own boats (which usually depart from Merang jetty) or public ferries that depart from KT Shahbandar jetty. The ferry schedules for certain resorts are shown in the opposite table but you should always check with the resort for the latest schedules. Boats travel in the day for safety reasons and must provide lifejackets for passengers.

If you are travelling by coach, allow at least 1 hour 45 minutes for both land and sea transfers between Redang and KT coach station. If you are travelling by air from KT airport, you should allow a minimum of 2 and a half hours (inclusive flight check-in).

Whichever jetty you depart from for Redang, make sure you check-in at the jetty at least 30 minutes before departure. The table here shows the scheduled departure times for some of the resorts but note that departure times are subject to change due to sea and weather conditions. Rough seas, low tides and stormy weather may affect the schedule and even the number of trips. Sometimes, heavy siltation and sedimentation can make Merang jetty impassable to all but the small speedboats. So make sure you always confirm with the resort your ferry schedule and jetty.

If you miss the scheduled resort ferries, you can still get on the public ferry that plies between KT Shahbandar jetty and the Kampung jetty at Redang for about RM50 per adult one-way - you should let the resort know and arrange with them for pickup either from the Kampung jetty or from the boat itself. Alternatively, if you are in Merang, you can try buying a ticket on one of the other resort ferries (if they are not full) - just approach the resort booth or check-in area at Merang and enquire.
