This program is all the rage in the IT world, however, I have not taken the time to learn about it until recently. VMware - Virtual Machine Software.

VMware allows you to create "stand alone" PCs on one single computer. I know your first thought is WHY? My second thought was HOW SLOW!

Well to answer your first question WHY. Because you can. The first feature of VMware that I found quickly answered my WHY question. The feature call SNAPSHOT. It takes a picture of the virtual PC and save it. Then you can go in a completely mess up the VM. Once it gets too bad, click REVERT and tada your VM is clean again. I have begun to use this feature when trying to figure out the best way to install MONO and MONODEVELOP.

As for the SPEED, I have a P4 Dual Core, with 2g Ram. I have the VM setup as a P4 with 512m RAM. It runs very nice. Kept in mind it's running Kubuntu, with a Kubuntu VM. I also have Windows XP with 512m RAM, Smoothwall v3.0 and FreeNAS running as VM's.

On my other PC with a P4 HT with 1g Ram, it runs a bit slower, however, I have just XP running.

If you run VMwaree, which has an open source version, get as much RAM as you can.

Oh, and now on to the good stuff. Installing VMware was very easy. Instead of reposting the direction, just take a look at this site. www.ubuntugeek.com

If you get a chance to try it, let me know what you think!

-Ravon

Mono 1.2.5 has been Released

Greetings,

Thank you to Sabaoth for sending me a message about Mono finally being update. I am mainly waiting for a new version of Mono, they are stuck at v1.2.4, which does not work.

I did get a bit of good news from the RunUO bug site. They fixed "AutoSave.cs" (folder structure) and "Common.MAP" (name case issue). This simply means that there will now be two less modification we need to make to get RunUO to work on Linux.

Mono seems to release new version every 4 months or so. Hopefully, we will see one before the end of September.

-Ravon

Windows XP + Mono = RunUO

Greetings,

I had a chance to setup a Windows XP box, with Mono 1.2.3. I then installed the Mono modified version of SVN181.

Comping the scripts worked just fine and the warning messages appeared the same as they do in Linux.

Starting RunUO, I needed to do "mono runuo.exe" and this took forever. I would say 30-45 minutes, compared to 3-5 minutes on .Net. Just a personal note...Why would you ever run Mono on XP if you have .NET. This is the performance killer combination!

Anyway, it finally did run. I was able to log in and move about. Unfortunately, the "invisible walls" and "holes" in the map are still present. I will admit there seems to be fewer "invisible walls". In stead of 4-6 squares, there are just 1-2 squares in a row.

"Holes" or anytime you go up stairs, you will drop to the point you cannot move.

So, there you have it. Map issues appear to be related to Mono missing stuff. What stuff? I wish I knew.

If you have any suggestions please let us know!

-Ravon

Time for another type of test.

Greetings,

Windows, Linux, .net or Mono - what, who, how and why?

We are getting closer or maybe we are still stuck in the same place. Several admins have been able to get RunUO up and running now, however, it is not yet practical to run a public shard.

My next test, in order to narrow down the problem will be to build a XP box and install Mono for Windows

Here are my thoughts...

If RunUO works fine with XP and Mono for Windows, then the problem is Linux - the file name, folder structure or something along that line. Remember Linux is case sensitive.

If RunUO has the same problems using XP and Mono for Windows, then it is truely a Mono issue. The actual RunUO scripts, at that point, would have to be re-written to handle the problem.

So, tonight I will sacrifice my kubuntu 6.10 computer to Bill Gates and load Windows XP on it. I need to test it before I post the results. Keep your fingers crossed.

I was thinking, since the RunUO code has not been updated, maybe some of the old fixes now work with mono v1.2.3.1. After reviewing tilematrix.cs and tilematrixpatch.cs, I notice that the way they read the files for MS.NET is different than MONO. The other files - Main.cs and FileOperations.cs also were written the same way. So, I adapted the "using System.Runtime.InteropServices;" statement and the "[System.Runtime.InteropServices.DllImport( "Kernel32" )]" sections of code.

Now when I run the server I get the following notice...

RunUO - [www.runuo.com] Version 2.0, Build 2635.19910
Core: Running on .NET Framework Version 2.0.50727
Core: Optimizing for 2 processors
Scripts: Compiling C# scripts...done (0 errors, 0 warnings)
Scripts: Compiling VB.NET scripts...no files found.
Scripts: Verifying...done (2089 items, 497 mobiles)
Regions: Loading...
Warning: Land EOS for Felucca (167, 249)
Warning: Land EOS for Ilshenar (105, 88)
Warning: Land EOS for Malas (124, 64)
Warning: Land EOS for Tokuno (32, 97)
done
World: Loading...done (0 items, 0 mobiles) (0.01 seconds)
This server has no accounts.
Creating Username: admin Password: admin
Account created.

Warning: Land error description can be found here although it is vague. Hopefully the next version of kubuntu, due out in April, will support the latest version of Mono 1.2.3.1.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mono

You can also find a list of bugs. One of my favorites, leads into whether or not MONO can be packaged with ubuntu now that Microsoft and Novell have made a patent agreement.

After reading all of this, I think maybe for now it would be better to manual compile MONO, instead of using Linux Installer for x86 (all distribution) package.

Since I cannot seem to connect any more, I wiped and reloaded everything with the newer version MONO, maybe I will try that.
