Three positions are sought for a DFG funded project on improving our understanding of Atlantic multi-decadal climate variability and predictability, beginning January 1st, 2008.

Postdoctoral scientist shall be employed to develop and apply a hybrid-coupled model for investigating the solution space of Atlantic climate variability with respect to key parameters. Results will be used to reduce uncertainties in the mechanisms of Atlantic multi-decadal variability, and to explain variability of climate models.
PhD student shall be employed to analyse the simulated variability in climate models and in idealized model experiments.

PhD student shall be employed to investigate statistical/dynamical methods for ocean reconstruction using historical data. The work will involve running coupled and uncoupled climate models. Applicants for the postdoctoral position must have a PhD in meteorology, oceanography, mathematics, or physics. Applicants for the PhD positions must have a university degree in mathematics, physics, meteorology, or oceanography. Experience in dynamical systems theory, climate modelling, and analysis of observational/model data are desired.

The postdoctoral position is initially for two years, but with possible extension to a third year. The PhD positions are each for three years. The salary class will be E 13 TV-L of the German tariffs for public employees. We are looking for an excellent PhD candidate with a background in programming and algorithms. We have an open position for 3 years in the ParComb project. The project is aimed at designing parallel algorithms for combinatorial problems in scientific computing. The type of problems studied includes, among others, different kinds of coloring and matching problems motivated from applications in scientific computing. The successful candidate will cooperate in developing and implementing working codes that can be used in applied research. Applicants should hold a M.Sc. degree or similar and is expected to work within this project and enter a PhD study. The PhD thesis should be submitted for defense within the 3-year period of the position. A plan for the PhD study will be developed in cooperation with the scientists within the project. As part of the PhD study the candidate should spend 6 month at the Old Dominion University, USA, working with professor Alex Pothen. Thus an applicant must be eligible to obtain a visa to the USA.

Salary will be paid in accordance with level 43 on the Norwegian government salary scale currently equivalent to NOK 325.800 pr. annum (before tax) which is about 41,000 Euro or 57,000 USD. Payment may be regulated on basis of seniority according to the public wage scale 43-46. There are no teaching duties. Knowledge of the Norwegian language is not necessary as the working language will be English. The Algorithms group at the Department of Informatics, UiB, has currently 4 professors, 5 postdocs, 8 PhD students, as well as several master students. A position as Doctoral research fellow is available at the Department of Landscape Architecture and Spatial Planning, Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The research fellow will take part in the research project Â«How the Environment affords physical activity in adolescentsÂ», financed by the Research Council of Norway.

The main aim of the project is to increase our knowledge on which physical factors,
linked to schools and their neighbourhoods, enhance or restrict levels of physical
activity in youths, and whether these are different for boys and girls.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The candidate will be expected to fullfil the research training programme within a period of 3 years.
A project description including some conditions regarding the research fellow is available. The position is available for a period of 3 years.

Qualification required: MSc or equivalent in one or more of the following; landscape architecture, spatial planning, geography, environmental sciences, environmental psychology. British Council and WWF-Indonesia invites Asian young leaders' aged 18–30 yrs, committed to aspects of the climate change debate (ie. Mitigation, adaptation and communicating behavior change) and able to communicate effectively and convincingly in English to join Asian Young Leaders' Climate forum (AYLCF), at 4 – 7 December 2007 in Bogor, West Java.

AYLCF will involve countries in Asia Pacific e.g. Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Burma, China, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, and also UK. Each country will send 2 young leaders to join in this 4 day program with presentation, workshop and cultural activities culminating in production of an action plan which will be taken to Bali COP for dissemination to a wider audience.

The young leaders would come from young politicians, influential regional scientist, social scientist, young leaders in NGO groups,interested journalist, young business leaders, young lawyers, and other professional and student leaders. All would have a bit of a track record in the field.

13th COP will take place in Bali in December 2007. The fact thatclimate change is a long-term phenomenon, early awareness amongsttomorrow leaders and their commitment to action will mean the worldwill be in a better position to meet the challenges being faces.

Through AYLCF, young leaders could demonstrate to the world that theyoung leaders of Asia are playing their part in tackling this globalproblem.

Work description: All positions are linked to the interdisciplinary EU-research project „Advanced-Eval“, which develops and applies advanced methods for the ex ante und ex post evaluation of EU-rural development policy programs. At the ethodological and theoretical level the following research topics are of interest within the project:

1. Agent-based Modeling of rural economy as a complex social and economic system incorporating social network relations among agents. In particular, the following research questions are addressed: How can the organization of economic action in social network relations be modeled quantitatively. What is the impact of social network relations on economic performance at the micro- and macro-level.

2. Applied Econometrics. Application of propensity-score matching methods and methods of spatial econometrics to analyze ex post the economic impact of various rural development programs.

3. Political Economy Modeling of EU-Rural Development Policy (EU-RD policy). Quantitative analysis of the impact of formal and informal political institutions on local government performance regarding the implementation of EU-RD policy. Empirical hypotheses are derived from game-theoretical or agent-based models of political decision making.

4. Simulation of an Economic-Ecological System based on a Multi-Agent-model. Incorporation of RD-policies into an economic decision-making model of farmers and a model of implied biological and physical processes at the regional level.

Researchers are directly integrated into a international and interdisciplinary research team within the EU-Project Advanced-eval. Moreover, all positions have access and are related to the Interdisciplinary Center of Numeric Simulation in applied Sciences as well as the DFG-Graduate School „Loosely connected systems and
Electronic E-Business“ at the CAU.

A master degree or a comparable University degree in agricultural or food economics, Economics or social science, mathematical or computational economics is essential. A good knowledge in quantitative methods of economics or social science, Agent-based Modeling or positive political theory would be an asset.

In the framework of the new Priority Programme SPP 1266 "Integrated Analysis of Interglacial Climate Dynamics (INTERDYNAMIK)" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Geosystem Modeling Group at the Department of Geosciences, University of Bremen, Germany, has three openings for Ph.D. students in the area of paleoclimate modeling.

*Position 1* (reference number A 118/07):* *The Ph.D. project aims at investigating climate-vegetation dynamics during Late Quaternary interglacial periods. The successful candidate will carry out numerical simulations with the comprehensive global climate model CCSM coupled to vegetation and ice-sheet models in a parallel supercomputing environment. The main objective of the work is to identify and analyze differences between individual interglacials and to explore the importance of feedbacks between land cover and climate. Results will provide insight into potential future climate system change associated with anthropogenic carbon dioxide
inputs. The project is a collaborative effort between the University of Bremen, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Bremerhaven) and the Free University Berlin. *Deadline for application is 26 October, 2007*.

*Position 2* (reference number A 119/07): The Ph.D. project aims at investigating the variability of the southern hemisphere westerlies during the past 10,000 years. The successful candidate will carry out transient simulations with the comprehensive global climate model CCSM in a parallel supercomputing environment. The main objective of the work is to identify the major forcing mechanisms that determine variability of the southern hemisphere westerlies and to improve understanding of the role of the westerly wind belt in shaping global climate change. The project is a
collaborative effort between the University of Bremen, the Geoforschungszentrum Potsdam and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven). *Deadline for application is 26 October, 2007.
*Position 3* (reference number A 120/07): The Ph.D. project aims at investigating the variability of the Arctic ocean-sea ice system during the Holocene. The successful candidate will carry out computer simulations with a regional numerical model of the Arctic Ocean. The main objective of the work is to assess the role of the Arctic Ocean in shaping past and future climate changes. The project is a collaborative effort between the University of Bremen, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Bremerhaven) and the IFM-GEOMAR (Kiel). *Deadline for application is 4 October, 2007*.

For all positions, applicants must have a Diploma or M.Sc. in *physics*, *Earth
sciences* or a related discipline and enjoy working in an international and
interdisciplinary team. Experience in numerical modeling and scientific computation (UNIX/LINUX, FORTRAN) is helpful. Good English language skills are required.

This initiative builds on current Program research in areas such as land use and greenhouse gas production, urban heat island mitigation, planning for natural disasters, megacities, planning and public health, and green industrial restructuring. The Centre for Public Health, Liverpool John Moores University invites
applications for an MPhil/PhD studentship to conduct a programme of research
focussing on communicable diseases affecting problematic drug users.

Drug users are particularly vulnerable to a range of blood borne infections
including hepatitis B, C and HIV, due to injecting with non-sterile
equipment and risky injecting behaviour. Hepatitis C is currently the most
significant infectious disease affecting those who inject drugs, with
concern nationally regarding the rising number of infections in the UK as a
whole. Research has also identified the implicative role of infections in
deaths of drug users from localised and systemic bacterial infections and
illnesses associated with viral infections, however infection-related deaths
are largely ignored in official statistics relating to drug-related deaths.

The student will be expected to develop a research programme focussing on
communicable diseases affecting problematic drug users, to inform knowledge
and understanding of the true burden and cost of drug-related mortality and
blood borne viruses. The research will be highly quantitative and require
extensive application of multivariate statistical techniques. The student
will be expected to have experience in handling large datasets and data
manipulation and a statistical background would be advantageous. People with
basic statistical abilities who wish to develop these in a public health
setting are encouraged to apply, in addition to those with research
experience in a health-related field. Applicants must demonstrate research
or statistical experience in their application.

Applicants should have a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree and a relevant
Masters degree would be an advantage (professional research experience would
also be considered). The student will join active teams of researchers in
the fields of substance use epidemiology and drug use prevention. The work
programme will be supported by academics and professionals with specialist
expertise and networks, in addition to the support and development
opportunities provided by the University Research and Graduate School and
the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences.

This project will explore the dynamic consequences of species loss from
large complex food webs. Food webs can be viewed as complex systems of
interacting species and have a number of network properties that can be
explored from a mathematical perspective. The aim of the project will be to
use mathematical and computational approaches to investigate the importance
of species in a food web context. The project will use documented patterns
of body size, abundance and food web structure to parameterise models of a
series of marine food webs with a special focus on Lough Hyne, south west
Ireland. We are also interested in dynamics of food webs in general. We are
currently recruiting for a Ph.D in theoretical ecology (Applied Mathematics)
to work on the project. The prospective candidate should have a background

and partly in Huddersfield [local travel expenses between the two will be
paid] for a three year jointly funded university and NHS project.

The successful candidate will work closely with NHS and University staff to
develop structures/methodologies for the transition of real patient's case
notes to coded exemplars capable of supporting technologist developing key
elements of the Electronic Patient Record; part of the NHS Documentation for
Health initiative. Publication of agreed methodologies to the Messaging
Infrastructure Manual is a key deliverable for the project that must be met
to agreed deadlines.

The successful candidate with the support of a supervisory team will take
the lead in exploring how need in the health care domain translates to a
technological solution. In particular, how do health workers and
technologists communicate? How can this process be enhanced? What are the
barriers to communication? It is envisaged that the PhD will involve
applying both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to the research
problem.

Generally, applicants are expected to possess a good Honours degree
(normally 2:1 or above) in computer science, computer engineering,
informatics or other computer-related subjects from an approved
degree-awarding body, or have a good Honours degree in any health related

PhD Studentship Division of Surgery & Oncology

*Identifying potential therapeutic targets in non-melanoma skin cancer - a
devastating complication of the genetic skin disease dystrophic
epidermolysis bullosa (DEB)*

Certain genetic skin diseases predispose to developing non melanoma skin
cancer. Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a devastating
genetic skin disease characterised by chronic erosions and blistering of the
skin. Not only do patients suffer from continual trauma induced skin
fragility, but are at a huge increased risk of developing Squamous cell
carcinoma (SCC). Unlike spontaneously arising SCC in the general population,
RDEB SCC are highly aggressive and prone to metastasis, with 55% of all
patients dying before the age of 40 years from this complication.

A three-year PhD studentship funded by DEBRA is available immediately to
join Dr Andrew South and the EB team at Dundee University, who have been
working towards genetic characterisation of RDEB SCC. Using a combination of
Affymetrix 10K genomic SNP mapping arrays and Illumina sentrix bead
expression arrays, genetic changes have been identified that are specific to
SCC development in both RDEB and non-RDEB individuals. This project will
follow up a number of candidate genetic loci identified in our initial
screens, as well as offering the opportunity to be involved in extending the
SNP genomic mapping using higher density 330K arrays and a larger sample set
with a view to identifying pathways and targets important in the development
of metastatic SCC.

Applications are invited from well-motivated candidates with at least an
upper second class honours degree in a relevant discipline. Candidates with
Masters degrees are also encouraged to apply. An ability to demonstrate
practical skills in cell or molecular biology would be an advantage. The
successful candidate will work in modern laboratories within the Division of
Surgery & Oncology, which is part of the School of Medicine, based at

The Formation Evaluation Society of Indonesia (FESI), an organization dedicated to the science of formation evaluation in oil, gas, and minerals applications, has funds available for scholarships and grants to be awarded during 2007 - 2008. FESI scholarships provide financial assistance to qualified under-graduate students pursuing a study program directly related to the science and application of formation evaluation.

Applications for scholarships are presently being solicited for award at the beginning of the 2007 fall term. Research Fellow in Scientific Computing/Applied Mathematics with
application to CO2-Sequestration– re-announcement

A three-year position as research fellow (PhD position) is available
at the Department of Mathematics.

The position is part of the project "Geological Storage of CO2:
Mathematical Modelling and Risk Assessment", a joint effort of the
University of Bergen and SINTEF Applied Mathematics, Oslo. The project
aims at strengthening the scientific understanding of the risks
associated with storage of CO2 for the purpose of reducing atmospheric
emissions. The investigations are related to the study of non-linear
partial differential equations arising from the multi-phase flow in
porous media. Methods from Scientific Computing will be applied, i.e.
the investigations will involve mathematical and numerical models,
numerical simulations and their physical and mathematical interpretation.

The candidate is expected to work in the multidisciplinary environment
of the project (applied mathematics, computational science and
engineering). The candidate is expected to spend 3 to 6 months abroad
collaborating with international partners.

The research fellow must take part in the University's approved PhD
programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Hence,

Applications for Postdoc Positions & PhD Graduate Students
(Computational Math Group)

Applicants are invited to join the computational mathematics and
scientific computing group in NTU (Nanyang Technological University)
on interdisciplinary computational imaging, computer vision and
computer graphics, at the boundaries between mathematics, computer
science and engineering. This group has been funded for four years to
build a national resource to explore new mathematical and
computational methods for PDE-based image processing and analysis,
surface processing involving compression, reconstruction, remeshing
and encoding for Interactive Digital Media development.

We hereby invite applications for 5 Postdoc positions and up to 9 PhD
scholars.

All positions are available from December 1 2007.
Review process will start October 1 2007 and continue until all
positions are filled.
The postdoc positions will be granted for a period of one year and can
be extended up to three years after appropriate probation.
The Ph. D scholarships will be granted for a period of 4 years.

Requirements for the Postdoc Positions

The postdoc candidates will be working with image processing and
computer visualization related to surfaces. Candidates having
experience with numerical simulations for partial differential
equations, or in any area of medical imaging, image processing,
computer vision, computer graphics and data compression are
encouraged to apply. Salary will be commensurate with experience and
background.

Requirements for the PhD Scholars

The PhD candidate should have taken sufficient courses in applied
mathematics related to numerical approximations or have a strong
course record in image processing, medical imaging, optimization or
computer vision. Experience with numerical simulations and project
work is an advantage. The candidate is supposed to finish a PhD degree
in applied mathematics within 4 years.
